• PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • Dear Members, As we enter the final stretch of the year, I hope that 2018 has, so far, been good to you and your family. There have been several key events held at the Club over the last month or two. These include the Prize Bingo Night, launch of The Hangout, the Tennis Festival and the September Italian Members Connect Night. The Best of British celebrations will continue this month with Super Brains and the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, a great day out at the race course. The 2018 Best of British will finish with The Great British Ball at the Shangri-la on Friday, 30 November. This will be a joint event with the British Chamber and we hope that seven hundred people will have a fantastic evening together. Tickets are still available. More information about these and other events, including Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night can be found in the magazine. I’d also like to draw your attention to the Festive Supplement, which you should have received along with this issue of the magazine. This year, the Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held at the Elizabeth Suite on Thursday, 29 November and we would like to invite all Members with voting rights to come along and be part of the governance of the Club. It was good to see candidates contest for a seat on the Main Committee last year and we hope for the same once again. In addition to attending the AGM, if any member has served on a sub-committee for at least one full year and has the inclination and passion to stand for election to the Main Committee we would be delighted to hear from you. Finally, we are keen to hear feedback and new ideas from members on all aspects of the club’s operations. There are many channels for communication, whether directly to the team or via comment cards etc. Alternatively, if you would like to send me an email (president@britishclub.org.sg), please do. On behalf of the Club, I wish everybody a healthy and happy month ahead. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

• GM’S MESSAGE • Dear Members, What a busy few months it has been at the Club. We celebrated National Day in August followed by the Best of British Prize Bingo Night and Bethwines Wine & Gourmet Dinner. If you flip through the magazine, you’ll see all the action from the Prize Bingo Night. It was indeed a great night as we played Bingo for a good cause, with Members and guests leaving with fantastic prizes like Apple MacBooks, Sony PS4, Dyson items, electric scooter, drones, speakers and much more. On the same night, we also had our monthly wine dinner, which was fully booked, as usual. Our wine dinners are very popular these days and I must emphasize the great value of these dinners. Whilst I’m drafting this message, we are already 50% booked for the October wine dinner so do book your seats early! Last month we kicked things off with the opening of The Brand New Hangout. Many months of hard work have gone into the creation of The Hangout, where the Jackpot Room and Games Room previously stood. This room came about because we wanted the teens to have their own space to hang out and have fun comfortably, without their parents. Jokes aside, the teens will be pleased to know that the room has been furnished with the latest Xbox, PS4, Alienware laptops, a Foosball Table, board games and more. Following the opening, kids flocked to the tennis courts as the Club debuted its first ever Tennis Festival. You can view the wonderful pictures in the magazine, and on our social media pages. There is also a special video of the Tennis Festival that features drone shots showing off the lush greenery around the Club which was created by a Club Member. Last month we also moved the Library to its former home which was most recently the Activity Hub. The Library has been converted into a Work Hub. We have noticed an increased number of Members spending their days at the Club working in various areas with their laptops so we wanted to create a more comfortable area for you to work from. The Work Hub has six work stations where you can conveniently plug in your laptop and sit in a proper office chair. The accompanying lounge area is also included should you simply wish to relax with a good book, magazine or newspaper. Improved wifi and office support such as printing is supported by Reception and the Windsor team is on hand to serve refreshments throughout the day. I hope you make use of and enjoy this new facility at the Club. For those who missed out due to the summer holidays, I’m happy to let you know that there are two special events happening this month – Superbrains Inter-Community Quiz Night and a day at the races for the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Singapore Turf Club. Next month, we will conclude this year’s Best of British celebrations with The Great British Ball on 30 November. Organised this year in association with the British Chamber of Commerce, ticket sales are going very well so be sure book your tickets early. Aside from the events, I would like to draw your attention to the Staff in the Spotlight feature that we have every month. We’re featuring an intern this month who comes from the happiest place on earth. To end this month’s message, I would like to update you on the Club’s plan to eliminate all single-use plastics. We have since changed our magazine mailing carrier from plastic to paper. The Windsor Shop will also be dedicating a corner starting this month, offering food-grade stainless steel straws. Join us on our quest to eradicate all single-use plastics at the Club! Wishing you a fantastic month ahead. ANDREW CHRISTON General Manager

ARRIVING IN SINGAPORE FROM THE UK? OUR 5 TIPS TO HELP YOU MANAGE YOUR FINANCES By Huw Wedlock, The Fry Group If you’re arriving in sunny Singapore for a new life, among the many things you’ll be doing to get settled, it’s important not to forget your finances. Follow this short list to ensure you’re prepared: 1. Your pension
3. Your property
You may not receive tax relief on contributions to a UK pension to the same extent as before, though you could still make some form of contribution for a limited time – subject to conditions.
Most expats with UK properties will rent them out. Consider joining the Non-Resident Landlord Scheme to prevent your rental agent from withholding Income Tax on the income they administer for you. Profits must still be reported in your annual UK Income Tax return. If you’ll be in Singapore for a while and decide to sell, research the capital gains implications. Non-residents still pay capital gains tax on profits from selling UK residential property, although if it was your Principal Private Residence, you do receive a degree of relief. Any capital gains tax only applies to gains accumulated after 6 April 2015 for those who are long term non-UK residents.
Seek advice about starting a fund in Singapore if you’re planning to stay several years. Because employers must pay into local employees’ Central Provident Fund (CPF), some provide non-Singaporean employees with a similar amount to invest at their discretion. If you already have a foreign pension, think about next steps. If this is your last destination as an expat before returning to the UK, find out what will happen to your foreign pension when you move. The UK government is strict about moving pension pots in and out of the UK so check to avoid a tax penalty. 2. Tax considerations To start your period of non-residence, download a P85 Form from HM Revenue & Customs’ website to submit when you know your new address. This will get you off on the right foot with your non-resident status and tax. To be classified non-resident, you must satisfy the conditions under the Statutory Residence Test. The number of days you can spend in the UK is reduced by the number of ‘ties’ you have there. But if you make a “lock, stock and barrel” move away from the UK, you will probably break UK residency from the date you leave. However, as each case is different, do look at your own situation in detail. During your non-residence period, earnings from non-UK sources are generally exempt from UK tax – there are a couple of rare exceptions to this rule, with one being if you work for the British Government.
4. Health Insurance Healthcare in Singapore can be expensive. If your company provides coverage for you and your family, check its extent. Most expats, particularly those with children, take out another policy. If you will be travelling internationally, consider a global policy. 5. Your will Seek legal advice about whether your will and any power of attorney are valid in both the UK and Singapore. If the unthinkable occurs and you and your spouse pass away, your children may be placed under local authority care, so it’s worth understanding what this would entail. Moving to Singapore is a well-trodden path and a great place to live! If you’re unsure about your financial situation, it’s always best to contact an experienced financial advisor.

• COMMITTEE IN THE SPOTLIGHT • What is your role on the Main Committee? I am the Treasurer of the Club and the Chairman of the Finance Committee.
How long have you been a Member at The British Club? 12 years
Where can we always find you at the Club? I’m mainly a Verandah man. Family can swim or play in kid’s areas, I know exactly where they are so I can eat, drink and be merry. The Windsor Arms and Mountbatten are not far behind. Failing that try a meeting room!
What is your favourite dish at the Club? Basically anything that our top chef Sunny prepares however a Murgh Makhani with breast meat by Rajeev or any of our fantastic Indian corner chefs also hits the spot.
What is your favourite item from the Windsor Shop? I have two favourite items from the Windsor Shop. No.1 will be my red golf umbrella and No.2 is the pink Piper Champagne.
INTERVIEW with
n e h p e t S n o t l u F
How do you spend your free time? Since work demands so much time with late meetings and travelling, my free time belongs to my girls, although I love it when the little one wants me to build a new Lego set with her.
What sets The British Club apart from the others? For me, it’s the fact it’s such a family orientated Club and it feels like it is a home away from home. The Staff are like my extended family.
How long have you lived in Singapore? 12 years
Favourite event at The British Club? Christmas Day at the Club.
What is your favourite cuisine? A good steak or Indian cuisine.
Best place to dine outside of The Club? Fine Dining at Equinox and every day dining at Marche.
What is your favourite movie of all time? I can’t narrow it down to one but any old war movie.
What is your favourite genre of music? Classical Crossover.
What is your favourite local dish? Beef and Noodles.
Red or white wine? Red every time.
Tell us one item you can’t live without in your life? It must be my smartphone and I’m not ashamed to say it. It keeps me in touch with my eldest who’s away at university and in touch with the rest of the family when I’m away. It’s a work device, an entertainment device, a keeper of memories from the past and maps to find where I’m going. I’d be lost without it.
Tell us something about yourself that nobody knows. My wife knows it all but most people don’t know that I was a 100 metre Sprinter at National level.
Describe yourself in 3 words. Loyal, moralistic and stubborn. If you are interested to know more or to join the subcommittee, please email enquiries@britishclub.org.sg SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT |

Meet
Tshewang Lhamo,
also known as Twang, the happiest intern at The British Club.
Twang hails all the way from Bhutan and joined the British Club family in May this year as an intern. Bhutan is a Buddhist kingdom on the eastern edge of the Himalayas, and is known for their rich landscapes and heritage. Bhutan is also the only country in the world that measures Gross National Happiness (GNH), and that might explain why Twang is always wearing a smile on her face. Twang is currently studying in Singapore, and is five months into her six-month internship programme as part of the service team at Verandah Café. Pursuing Hospitality Management, Twang shows tremendous interest in the F&B industry. This was however not always the case in her earlier years, as she dabbled in marketing and business management. Twang comes from a big family of 11, and is the youngest amongst her siblings. Growing up, her family were always involved in the hospitality industry, and that influenced her as well. Before her stint in Singapore, Twang studied Business Management in India. Twang completed her study in the university and worked in the marketing industry for a year. Throughout her course of work, she often found herself searching and craving to know more. Perhaps
“
that had to do with the passion and eagerness to improve herself, and that’s when she decided to pursue a diploma in Hospitality Management. She was subsequently selected after an interview with the Club.
...believe in continuous
“
learning and that probably inspires me...

Here at the Club, we welcome interns local or international, to join the family. This provides an opportunity for students to gain valuable experience, and in turn springboard their careers. Read on to know more about Twang, and her goals in life.

1)
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself
7)
Tell us your biggest achievement to date.
I do not have an interesting fact about myself but I have one for my country. English is one of the most used language in Bhutan, and is the medium of instructions in majority of the schools.
I will graduate with a diploma in hospitality management after I complete my internship at the British Club and this would probably be my biggest achievement.
2)
Tell us what you think about Singapore
8)
What type of music do you like?
Singapore is highly developed, clean, and is an excellent place for my studies. This is the first time I’m here in Singapore and I’m glad I came here.
Country music!
9)
What is your preference for food?
I like anything that’s spicy, and served with rice.
3) What made you decide to study in Singapore?
10) Tell us a food item that you’ll never get close to.
Initially, I studied Business Management in India. Thereafter, I worked in the marketing industry but was often looking for more. Since my whole family was in the service industry, I decided to pursue Hospitality Management. Eventually, we would like to run a successful restaurant that provides top notch service for both the locals and tourists back in Bhutan.
Bhutanese do not have much restrictions on food but I do not eat pork. I do eat all the other meats like chicken, fish and beef.
11) What shows do you watch the most?
I love Korean dramas and always indulge in some before sleeping.
4)
12) What is your greatest strength or What have you learned from this internship weakness? so far?
People skills. I learnt to handle Members in different, sometimes tricky situations. Problem solving and teamwork are also some of the things I’m learning.
5) What skill or craft would you like to master?
To master the art of customer service. Many times, we study our notes and books but more often than not, it’s never the same. Every customer is different so thinking on the spot is very important.
6)
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Hopefully, back in Bhutan, and running a successful restaurant!
I feel like I still need to work on being more outspoken, and to be less shy and apprehensive.
13) What is an ideal way to spend your days off?
I have a good friend in Singapore that I met back in Bhutan, and we usually hang out over the usual lunches, movies and such.
14) What inspires you to be better?
I always believe in continuous learning and that probably inspires me to be better.

For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature
MARTIN RIMMER
ily. m a f s i h and
Martin joined the Club in April 2018. He is the Head of Tax at Select Investors, a division of St. James’s Place (Singapore) Pte Ltd. In this interview, we find out a bit more about Martin, his job and what motivates him. What made you join the Club and how has your experience been so far? As a family we wanted to find a place to relax, make friends and to bring our son, Daniel. The club is great and the facilities are wonderful. We come up on the weekends to swim with Daniel, who absolutely loves the splash pool and the supervised playroom. All the staff are so friendly, which is an absolute credit to the club. Every time we come through the doors, it feels like coming home.
Tell us more about yourself and your profession We have been living in Singapore for 7 years now – how time flies! It has become ‘home’ and we are very settled and happy here. Basically, my job is to make UK tax ‘work’ for my clients. That might involve doing their tax returns, helping them plan for a move back to the UK, designing an Inheritance Tax plan, or a Property, Pension or Tax-efficient Investment Strategy. Without questions the number one thing about my job is the clients. I just love meeting people, and really making a difference in their lives. When that happens, clients become friends and I become their ‘trusted adviser’. Over the years that I have been a tax professional (too many to mention!), I have met so many people from such different walks of life – truly, no two days are the same. It is a brilliant job. My wife, Wei Ru, also runs her own UK tax practice (Duke Taxation Services) which prepares UK tax returns for Singaporeans and other foreigners who have property investments in the UK. As you can imagine, we have a really exciting home life! In my spare time, I love to play the piano, which I’ve done since I was 8 years old. We love movies and box sets too, and I am involved in my local Church.
On a scale of 1 to 10, tell us how important it is to manage our taxes well Well, of course, I would have to say 10! You would be amazed at just how much can be saved by taking some relatively simple tax planning steps. Over the years, the difference that simple tax savings can make can be truly staggering. And it really doesn’t have to be ‘rocket science’ or involve complicated structures. In fact, I pride myself on making things as simple, understandable and as effective as possible.
Lastly, tell us about your motivation and what inspires you It sounds a bit cliché, but it is all about doing the right thing with integrity, whether that is in my personal or professional life. I guess that is the same for most people. We really just want to build a happy home, full of laughter, music and faith.

LOOK LIKE A TEAM, WIN AS A TEAM! by Liza Rowan
New Ladies Tennis kit
It’s said that tennis is the loneliest sport on the planet. Often compared to golf, at least golfers have the company of their caddie and play their game against the course; in tennis it’s a continuous battle against a single human opponent (maybe 2) , of not just skill and stamina, but of minds. In tennis, the players are face to face throughout the entire match, separated by net (a second nemesis!) ensuring no friendly chitchat during play. Also, tennis players are confined to a small white-bordered box and therefore don’t get time to think or self-talk as golfers do when walk the green fairways between strokes. You’ll have also heard that tennis is a mental game – attitude, level of focus, staying calm, being positive and confident are a few of the disciplines that need constant attention. Your emotions walking out on that court are key – hopefully feeling so good about yourself that there’s an extra bounce in your stride.
With many tennis players in the section, how was the new kit decided? An online survey was put out to 60 of our competitive female players to share their views on styles, colours and designs. Going with the majority of opinion and to allow for individual preferences, the new kit enables ladies to choose from blue or white t-shirts, tanks, skorts and dresses. The men’s and youth were a little less complicated J, and they actually chose the same design, as per the photo – blue shorts or skort (for female youth) and a white t-shirt. From there it was a collaborative effort with the club’s designated clothing provider, Canterbury, to agree exact complimentary pantones, pattern sizes, and other design specifics. It was then a case of getting all members to size themselves against general samples, sign-off on the final design, get the items into production and delivered to all players before their first matches! Proudly wearing our new kit not only makes us feel part of a team, but reminds us that we are active members of the wider club. We are confident this ensures that as tennis players we will never feel lonely on court, while also giving us that mental edge enabling us to dig deeper to fight wins, not only on a personal level, but for our team and for the British Club.
At the club, we hope that tennis is anything but lonely as our men’s, ladies and youth all play competitively as part of a team. And although we come from all corners of the world – even our four amazing coaches hail from four different continents – we proudly step out on court to play our singles or doubles matches wearing the British colours and club logo. In making a bolder FYI: kit is available to all members and can be purchased, or statement, the tennis section recently updated all its kit so that pre-ordered, at the ProShop. across all the teams – men’s, ladies, and youth – the colours and styles are brighter, uniform and consistent. We believe that this injects that extra spring in our step as we walk out to face our opponents.

FRIDAY NIGHT HEARTBREAK By The Boaster & Andrew Marshall Captain Andrew Marshall also managed 6 matches with 4 wins and 2 losses. Nick Barker played 4 matches and won each time (we need you every week next year, Nick!) and Liam Douglas played 5 times. A big thank you goes to them all for their commitment. In total, twenty players turned out for the club, often at places as far flung as Bedok and Choa Chu Kang and while the results did not all go our way, they enjoyed the beers with which victories were celebrated or sorrows drowned! The player of the season award goes to Craig Telmer who not only played the most but also ended up organizing many of the matches as Andrew and vice-captain Nick Fell travelled for much of this year –thanks Craig!

So, it was a season of what-ifs and maybes…but next year could be our year! Until then, we can enjoy the Cosmo league which gets going in late August. The section has lost a few players but is delighted to have 9 firsttimers this season. They enjoyed their first taste of Cosmo at the pre-season social (see photos) and you will hear more about our early match results in the next edition.

In the last magazine, you read that “The brilliant start to the SSRA veterans’ league season that you read about here last month has proved to be more than just a start.” At that point, half way through the season, we were second in the league. Unfortunately, also at that point, three of our best players (Neil Frith, Mark Goulding and Matt Gyde) left Singapore and the rest of the section started their summer holidays, and from then on it was an achievement just to get a team out every week. Results suffered and we only won two of our last seven fixtures to end up with in fourth place with a W7/ L7 record. Playing competitive team squash on Friday nights over 14 weeks needed a lot of commitment from our golden oldie players and some deserve special praise: Craig Telmer played 9 matches and won 6 and only lost 3. Jamie Salamon played 6 games, mostly in the unenviable number 1 spot, and managed 3 wins and 3 losses. 44 |

TIGER TIMES (GRRRRR....!) By John Hancock Unless you’ve had your head in a bucket all summer, you’ll know that Tiger Woods challenged for the Open Championship at Carnoustie. Meanwhile in Asia, we’ve been trying to get a bit of run on the ball; no 300 yard drives on our well-watered fairways here I’m afraid.
The winning team from the Golf Section of Graeme, Nic, Ashley and Chris.
From left to right, Ashley, John, Nic and David - four Members of the team. Not pictured Mike, Greg, Steve and Kenny.

The MNGL got underway on 20th August with 118 golfers out on the Orchid Country Club course. Our British Club team managed to scrape a few points together on our first outing but we all agree it’s going to be a tough season. Very nice to see our Club President out on the course again, even though it was for another team! Our inaugural Inters sectional Golf Challenge was held at Ria Bintan on 25th August. Golf, Soccer and Rugby all put up teams with the Golf team sneaking the win. The format was a modified stableford conceived to encourage a slew of birdies and of course favour the golfers, but blue tees in stormy weather so close to the ocean somewhat stifled the birdie flow. Nearest the Pins went to Nic from the Golf section and Macka from Rugby who also sneaked the longest drive. This has the potential to be an anchor event in the Club’s sports calendar so we are looking for a date in 2019 that works for more people. Finally, a quick reminder on the 2018 remaining schedule; Bali Tour 2018, 19-21 October; Order of Merit Championship, Sentosa Serapong Course, 7th December; monthly outings generally on the 1st Saturday and 2nd Friday. Happy golfing!
