GM’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, You could see that the Club is bustling with activities and events now that the festive season is here. In the coming weeks, our chefs and staff will be busy preparing for the busiest time of the year bringing smiles to the faces of our Members and their children. For some, this may be the first time you are celebrating Christmas here in Singapore. Here in the Club, we have plenty of exciting events and delectable yuletide offerings for you and your family this festive season! As this is the last magazine issue of 2015, I can proudly say that it has indeed been another successful and eventful year for the Club. From the Best of British Celebrations in June to the SG50 Celebrations in August to the week-long Mexican Fiesta and Peranakan Night in October. The Club will be ending 2015 with a blast at the New Year Eve’s Gala Dinner 2016: Sailing the high seas on board HMS Queen Victoria and a Wild, Wild West Cowboys and The Little Red Indians themed New Year’s Eve Family Countdown Party at the Verandah Café on 31 December. So be sure to book now to secure your seats! On 19 October, the Club held its Annual Employees’ Dinner & Dance at Fullerton Hotel to show appreciation to all employees. It is rewarding to see so many of our employees receiving their Long Service Awards. Time certainly flies, as I have now served the Club for 5 years. It has been a great and rewarding 5 years. All this would not have happened without the great support and dedicated hard work from the staff in upholding our 3-steps of service bringing magic moments to our Members. As your general manager, I am writing to ask for your donation towards the annual Hong Bao Fund to show your appreciation for their effort. The Club does not encourage tipping nor charge a service fee, the kind gesture from you to the Annual Hong Bao will be deeply appreciated by the team who work hard throughout the year giving their best to serve all Members. You will be receiving a letter in your monthly statement of accounts shortly. On behalf of the Club Management and the team, I thank you for your continuous and generous support. Wishing all Members a Happy Christmas and a peaceful & prosperous New Year. SEAN BOYLE General Manager

HOW MUCH CAN I DRAW FROM MY PENSION POT?

If you follow the vintage card collector who wrote the rulebook on withdrawal rates you won’t go far wrong DAVID PUGH

Director, The Fry Group Singapore David Pugh has been living and working in South East Asia for four years and is responsible for The Fry Group’s activities in the region. David specialises in inheritance tax strategy, pension planning and portfolio management. He is a regular contributor of financial scenario articles for the Financial Times, an Associate of the Institute of Financial Planning and a Board Member of the British Chamber of Commerce, Singapore.

Every year, Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) inducts one of the world’s most fanatical card collectors into its Hall of Fame. Bill Bengen’s card collection from the 1950s and 60s was rightly considered one of the best around and in 2008 he secured his spot. The accolade gave him immediate rock star status among collectors of vintage cards. Which is funny, because looking at his photograph on the PSA website, he resembles anything but. He looks more like the typical, old-style financial adviser. Actually, this is not surprising. Long before making waves as a collector, the 67-year-old native New Yorker rocked the financial planning world with a formula designed to safeguard retirees. It’s called the “four per cent rule” and it relates to the age old question: How much can I safely take from my pension pot? People want to enjoy the maximum income from their portfolio, but there’s potential for trouble if they over reach. Generations of investors have faced this issue and some have developed their own strategies in order to dodge a disastrous outcome, but I would say Bill Bengen nailed it 22 years ago when he produced his four per cent formula. The premise is that if you withdraw no more than four per cent from your nest egg a year, then it’s likely that it will last the entire course of your retirement. Your portfolio’s capital value could fall slightly, of course, but your income payments starting at four per cent of your initial capital and increasing yearly in line with inflation - will always be met. His ground-breaking findings have already helped thousands of retirees establish budget and spending patterns which succeed. Bill Bengen, who majored in Mathematics from MIT, doesn’t seem himself as a doyen of the financial planning industry. He says he just wanted to help his 90 or so clients with questions like, “how do I set up my finances?”, and “how much can I take out?”. There was no research at that time. His own calculations were based on actual investment results from periods like the Great Depression and World War II. Some observers say that after the 2008 crash, the figure is too low. Bengen says he has considered this criticism and sees no reason to change. The four per cent rule can work for Brits who want to stick to their home market when investing their pension. According to a 2010 study by Wade Pfau, professor of retirement income at the American College of Financial Services, the probability of failure is nine per cent. This is based on a portfolio invested equally in UK shares and British government bonds. For those who withdraw five per cent, the chances of failure rocket to 56 per cent. Four per cent, says Professor Pfau, is a sufficiently low figure not to pose too much risk. Bill Bengen combined his love of history with a passion for numbers to produce a formula which has allowed thousands of investors to access a chunk of their savings each year and safely enjoy the fruits of their labour.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Member in the spotlight For this issue of Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to present one of The British Club’s past presidents, Mr Shaun Matheson. For those who may not know, aside from being Managing Director of AngloAsian Shipping, Mr Matheson has served the Club as our president from 2009 to 2012. He is currently a Member of the Club’s Main Committee – Co-Chairman of Development and Health & Safety Committee. Mr Matheson is also the head of the F&B Taskforce formed in May to review the Club’s food & beverage current offerings as well as the consistency in food and service standards across all outlets. In this exclusive interview, Mr Matheson will share with us some insights about the Club and his life.

What brought you to Singapore and The British Club? Being British, this was an obvious choice for me and the family and we have never regretted it. Came for 12 months and now past 22 years! What do you love the most about the Club? All the friends you meet and make through the years and the friendliness of the staff which makes the Club a ‘home away from home’. With the new menus in the restaurants, what are the new food items you would recommend to Members? Having been a part of this project, I would like to urge members to try all outlets and find your own new favourite! I find the Mountbatten Room and Verandah’s Indian kitchen as one of the best in Singapore, Chef Sunny is doing a great job with his crew. As one of the Past Presidents of The British Club, can you share with us a little known fact about the Club which the Members may not know about? This will probably have to be to salute all the convenors and Members who volunteered their free time to make the Club what it is today. Members often take this for granted and don’t notice it on a day-to-day basis. But believe me we will the day, and God forbid, this stops. With Christmas around the corner, can you share with us your usual tradition in spending Christmas with the family? My children and grandchildren are in Norway so we venture back to the cold and snowy country celebrating Christmas under the stars with snow. Traditionally, Norwegian Christmas food consists of spare ribs with potatoes, sausages, and what have you. Not bad at all and different.

Our Best of British 2015 Celebrity Chef Paul Askew was awarded Chef of the Year by Cheshire Life and Lancashire Life back in the UK! Celebrity Chef Paul Askew was here at The British Club for the Best of British 2015 celebrations from 5 to 13 June 2015. Chef Paul prepared a remarkable 5-course Gourmet Dinner for the Best of British’s Opening Gala Dinner and showcased his exquisite culinary skills to the attendees of the Ladies Luncheon.

The British Club congratulates Chef Askew on his award! The big one for me was winning the North West Chef of the Year which came as a wonderful surprise and quite an emotional one with winning the two together. I think it gives the team a sense of where we are in the region, not just in our own little bubble within the Art School. People outside of the City in Cheshire, Lancashire and the Lake District have also recognised what we are trying to do so it really is wonderful. It’s a beautiful thing.” – Chef Askew About The Art School Restaurant and Chef Paul Askew Located in the stunning lantern room of the Victorian 1888 ‘Home for Destitute Children’ building on Sugnall Street is merely a stone’s throw away from Hope Street and Liverpool city centre. Chef Patron Paul Askew triumphed with the Cheshire Life and Chef Askew has been working with his chosen suppliers for many Lancashire Life North West Chef of the Year. years and has therefore established close relationships where excellent quality is guaranteed. The corks are popping at The Art School Restaurant in Liverpool as they celebrate their double success at the 2015 Cheshire Life http://www.theartschoolrestaurant.co.uk/ and Lancashire Life Food & Drink Awards - one of the biggest social and culinary events in the region’s calendar. The awards “Congratulations Paul, you are a credit to the industry and the are designed to champion, highlight and offer a showcase City of Liverpool.” – Sean Boyle, General Manager, The British to the good and the great from the region’s food and drink Club Singapore industry – including local producers and suppliers, chefs, restaurants, pubs and hoteliers, and people who care about the countryside and the future of our local environment. “Our Chef of the Year 2015 is not just a cook, albeit one of the best cooks in the business, he’s a food champion, an ambassador for his profession and for his home city and a huge supporter of apprentice schemes dedicated to nurturing young talent to seize the opportunities” – Cheshire Life and Lancashire Life It was a joyous occasion for Chef Askew and his hardworking, dedicated team when The Art School Restaurant took on the title of Lancashire Life Restaurant of the Year as well. “Just to be shortlisted amongst the final three in the Best Restaurant category was great but to win was amazing, especially for the team after only being open for 14 months. It’s a huge pat on the back for all of the team and their hard work, especially to open a new business and to get the restaurant in a position where it is already winning awards. THE BRITISH CLUB

SPORTS & FITNESS SWIMMING:

Section Report By Tory Morris

It has been a difficult couple of months for the swimming section with the haze situation, we do hope that the new year brings blue skies and fresh air. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this period. A special thank you to Barracuda mum and superstar, Sujata Din for helping out with land based training for the squads over the period. On the side note, it was fantastic to have held our Annual British Club Swimming Gala on 6 September, it was a fantastic morning of family fun with a record number of entrants! On 3 October, Coach Roland accompanied a coach full of children and Masters swimmers to the FINA Swimming World Cup heats at the very impressive OCBC Aquatic Centre. Everyone enjoyed the morning despite the haze and had lots of fun watching some inspirational swims. All enjoyed the opportunity for some team building! As we go to press, the team are looking forward to the last 2 Neptune League meets of the season in November and (of THE BRITISH CLUB

course) the Barracudas Team’s night and End-of-Year Prize Giving on Wednesday, 9 December. If you have not signed up yet, please do it now! As we draw near to the end of the season, we are thrilled with the participation and team spirit of the Masters and Barracudas, as well as the enthusiasm and commitment of the Learn to Swim Members. We thank you for supporting the swimming section which has made us the largest section in the Club! We have lots planned for 2016, including some rebranding, new kits and equipment all available at the club. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Keep Swimming! If you have any queries or suggestions, please contact us at swimming@britishclub.org.sg

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Golf Section News The October Medal has been pushed back to 1 November; the report will be with you next month. Sadly, the Phuket trip has been postponed due to a poor take-up, perhaps it’s the November timing. For those interested in forming a core group for a tour next year, please get in touch and we will try our best to make it happen. We need a group of 6 to make it feasible.

My Dad had passed away the year before and it would’ve been his birthday, further more I had my son with me. Just to cap it all I had a quadruple bogey on the first; a 9! And you claim to fame? SPORTS & FITNESS How often you change your clubs? The putter is one I used from 8 to 14 years ago and started using it again last year. I sink more long putts with the Ping. The Titleist woods (2006 model) are new to me. They are nice weight and I hit them beautifully. My irons are my 3rd set after taking up golf in the late 80’s. I bought these new in 2006 and keep covers on them in the bag. They have a great look and feel and allow me to shape the ball. The wedges are circa 2002 which I’ve accumulated over the years, the last being the lob wedge which I picked out of the bin last year. Grips I change about every 4 years and I usually have my wood shafts custom fitted although not the PT 906F2’s, they fit perfectly.

SPORTS & FITNESS FOOTBALL:

Football Report

By James Morris

Final words go to Rich English - an extract from his ‘virgin’ speech/ poem (I am sure the editor has not tweaked!). A group of around 20, brave and foolhardy Went down to the pitch to do battle in Bali. We started off brightly, we thought we could have ‘em Releasing the ball to the flying Steve Mangham. Steve whips in a cross, as only he can And who turns it in? Big Garry Annand.

Football continues at The British Club despite the haze with only two Saturdays impacted since the beginning of September. Are we all highly tuned athletes or maybe just not so smart? Well, the jury is definitely out on the former. Talking of athletes, we have welcomed several new members over the last few months with a good mix of youth and experience. Youngsters Chris Orange (four goals in his first game) and Arjun Ramnath have again brought the average age down and the more experienced Toby Codrington, Sam Jones and Steve Wilkes bring an invaluable blend of quality and know how! We have also had the pleasure of welcoming Grant Hall (ex-convenor), Budgie and Robert Batrick for games during their visits to Singapore. Rumour has it that Grant scored a blinder but had no phone to tell his family and friends back in London. In early October, a band of twenty players visited the shores of Bali for the ‘Autumn’ tour. Our third consecutive year to Bali and what a tour it was. The football was great and we have much to thank Gareth Fitzpatrick from the Bali Sports Foundation for organising the pitches and opposition. Despite playing on a massive pitch, the surface was very good and the ‘crowds’ clearly enjoyed our style of football. Some great performances from the ever-green John Rennie, Bill Palmer, Stephen Mangham and Paul Hackett with some pace injected by the younger players Mike Thornton, Rich English and Paddy Flynn. The statistics showed ‘Played 4, Drew 3, Lost 1, scoring 12 and conceding 15’. The nightlife was again priceless but you know what they say about tours! The customary ‘tour virgins’ made their after-dinner speeches and we had the tour fines issued by Rich English, raising SGD700 for the Sports Foundation. The last evening was somewhat spoilt by the rugby result and trying to find a taxi at 5.00am in the morning. Next tour Ho Chi Minh in March so mark your diaries…. THE BRITISH CLUB

Playing slick football, quickly moving the ball We go 2-0 up after a finish by Paul. Oppo draw level after a bit of a farce, Rich English the twit with an awful back pass. Paddy Flynn on form, finds the back of the net, Man of the match performance, I’d wager a bet. Garry scores again, he is sniffing a hat-trick, Then a Mike Thornton cross, is turned in by Patrick. The end of the match, fine game to be fair, Final score was 5-5 (should anyone care). Straight out on the beers. O no there’s a catch! James Morris has organised another bloody match. 2-0 down at half-time, it’s not looking good, Our unbeaten record, lose it we could. Back come The British Club with a goal scored by Robin Turning in a corner, using his noggin. Foul on Paddy and he is back up quick, Scores once again with a superb free-kick. 3-2 down with only seconds to go, But up steps Mike Haughey when we need a hero! Corner from Gareth and The British Club score, Crowd goes bananas, just hear them roar. Final whistle goes, 3-3 I think, Thanks god for that we can go for a drink. Apologies to all I meant to keep this short, But this is the end, of my match report. It just leaves me to say that it’s been an awesome tour, A top bunch of lads and I look forward to more.

SPORTS & FITNESS Tennis:

Court activity undeterred by haze or rain… Edited by Julia Fenton

Men’s Tennis Box League – starting January If your New Year’s resolution is to be ‘work a bit less and play a bit more sport’, the Mens’ Tennis Box League is for you. We have players at all levels so you will have friendly, enjoyable and competitive matches. Each box comprises four players so you’ll have three matches over a six-eight week period, which you organise directly with box members. The format is two sets with a super tie-break (10 points) if necessary and most matches are completed within two hours, with Scores Bar rehydration to There have been some dispiriting times recently for players; follow. the ongoing haze effecting play and matches. Teen Tennis Social

Teen Social – for all enthusiastic teens After a 6 month trial, Teen Social is on every Sunday, 2.00pm to 4.00pm, for any 12-17 year olds wanting the chance to practice match play skills and socialise with fellow players. The group has also really helped those in the KLM team build on their drills and skills by giving them some invaluable match practice. You don’t need to be in the team to enjoy the social, so come along; you will be extremely welcome!

Club players often only focus on themselves. Remember that there are two ends of the court which effects how the game is played. It is often what we cannot see that makes the difference; strategy, tactics, shot selection. A more experienced player controls their end of the court and understands the shots they can and cannot play. They analyse your game in the warm up and first initial games, then make subtle adjustments to affect your game. Next month, walk onto the court knowing your strengths, the type of style that can help you play well and start to analyse your opponent and look for the following; • • • •

Are they forehand or backhand dominant? Where do they stand to return and serve? Do they play close to the baseline or deeper in the court? Do they like to come to the net or are they more comfortable behind the baseline?

Once you have an understanding of your opponent’s strengths, try to remove that part of their game. Link your confident shots into their less confident shots; your patience will pay off.

He raced to 32 Despite the fact The British Club (BC) Cricket team off 23 balls (including 2 glorious sixes over mid-on) were yet to post a victory against the Woodpeckers, to have the BC cruising at 1/122. Gary Smith (33 off we went into this game with a reasonable amount of 20) brought back memories of Ian Botham as he and confidence. That confidence proved to be well placed Simon Jones (26 off 20) then took the score to 2/204 when Shane Sampson removed the Woodpeckers as the hapless Woodpeckers bowlers were mercilessly opener, Stucki cleaned bowled in the second over. hammered. Clearly the Woodpeckers needed some Despite a solid partnership between the Woodpeckers cheering up, the man to do it was BC Captain for the next two players, BC managed to keep the score to day, Paul McNee. He strode out to face the first ball a respectable total of 217 off 30 overs. Marsh 55 and and the Woodpeckers quickly decided to go on the George 51* were the standout Woodpeckers batsmen attack with 3 close in fielders. I have to concede, I did while Roger Kelly 0/10 off 3 overs, Miles Beasley 1/8 feel a bit of pressure, as the first ball was limply played (off 3), Gaurav Lakhanpal 2/10 (off 2) and Simon Jones straight to one of the close in fielders. He somehow 1/11 (off 2) all kept the batsmen in check for the BC. managed to drop it. The next ball saw an even worse The 217 target didn’t look enough and after the BC’s shot result in another simple catch dropped as the opener Gaurav Lakhanpal smashed the first ball of the Woodpeckers Stott tripped over his own cap in an innings through point for a boundary, it was looking attempt to take the catch. The Woodpeckers were left in disarray with the Captain for the day, Sam Gibson resigning in disgrace and contemplating mass changes for the next game. Game 2: Veterans League – The British Club vs Misfits Athletic (Turf City) Due to the haze being in excess of 200 this game was abandoned. An unofficial game was played and BC set a new record for dropped catches as the red ball in the haze was extremely difficult to pick up. Ross “not so much a blocker these days” Marsh lead the way for BC with a solid 70 and BC felt short in a tight run chase. Game 3: Veterans League – The British Singapore Cricket Club (Dempsey Oval)

In his 3rd over (one too many per haps), Captain Paul McNee broke Paul Twines record for consecutive wides with 5 deliveries deemed wide of the mark by the umpire. He did manage to redeem himself somewhat with a nice running “mark” (relieving his Aussie rules days) over the top of a bemused Rob Lerpiniere at square leg to get rid of SCC’s dangerous Jason Mannell for 24 off the bowling of Simon Bignell. Unfortunately when it came to the run chase, BC was in trouble right from the start. Stafford and Lerpiniere were dismissed without troubling the scorers and after despatching a couple of full tosses to the leg side boundary, Roger Kelly joined them to have BC struggling at 4/57. The league’s top scorer David Hosking (21 off 15) and Shane Sampson (36 off 33) lead the fight back with both of them hitting some lovely shots including towering 6’s down the ground. Ex-Captain reliable Buck (26) (who kept his good run of for m intact) and Miles Beasley (20 off 22) kept it going with Beasley especially good square of the wicket while Buck played his usual compact innings with the highlight a cover drive for 4 that Michael Slater would have been happy with. Unfortunately, Beasley was very unlucky to be dismissed by an outstanding catch at mid-wicket and the rest of the BC’s batsmen gave very little resistance as we tumbled to be all out for 135.

With Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) needing a win to guarantee victory in the series this game was always going to be hotly contested. SCC won the toss and decided to bat first. Shane Sampson lead the way with the ball for BC, bowling an inspired spell with a decent amount of venom (2/24 off 5) to help keep SCC to a respectable 6/238. The rest of the BC bowling was tight with Brett Davis (bowling straight and tight), Simon Bignell (bowling a nice length) and Miles Beasley Two games to go for the season against ANZA and (mixing it up so much I am not sure he knew what he Cargill let’s see if we can finish on a winning note! was bowling next) all keeping the batsmen honest.
