PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Is it summer already? It certainly feels as though the year is flying by. In many other parts of the world a change in the weather might indicate the approach of summer but, as the last few months have clearly demonstrated, here in Singapore we only experience minor fluctuations in the relentless heat. However, don’t rush to more moderate climes just yet as there is a lot in store over the next two months at the Club! On that note, I would like to commend our General Manager, Mr Sean Boyle, and his team, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to plan and deliver the Best of British 2016. The series of events would not be possible without the sponsors who support and facilitate in many different ways and who create a financial framework that allows us to raise significant funds for our two designated charities; my thanks to them indeed. Across the variety of events there will be something to appeal to everyone and, by the time you read this, tickets will be fast running out so don’t leave it too late. Once more, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all recent new members of The British Club. Do not hesitate to approach any of our Member Relations staff to learn more of the variety of activities, events, sports and dining options on offer. As usual, there will be a Members Connect Night on the first Thursday of the month, in this case Thursday, 2nd June, and this is open to new members and existing members alike. Thereafter, we will be taking a short break in view of the summer holidays and Members Connect will return on the 1st of September. During the late summer we anticipate a little disruption from the execution of an extensive refurbishment of the kitchens behind the The Windsor Arms. This work has been in detailed planning for quite some time and is intended to provide the Club with a modern facility, the first full kitchen refurbishment since the original construction of the Club, which will allow for greater efficiency in food preparation and delivery not only in the Windsor but also in the other outlets in the main clubhouse. It will also ensure that our culinary team are working in an appropriate environment that meets the highest food, health and safety standards. Please be patient as we go through this phase as the staff will be working extremely hard to continue to deliver excellent service to you. Finally, with no conflict of interest at all, I would like to suggest that for the coming Father’s Day, should Rolls Royce and Aston Martin be sold out, you might like to treat your Dad to a sumptuous 5-course lunch spread at the Mountbatten Room. There will be celebratory offerings at The Windsor Arms and the Verandah Café too. I wish you a great month of June. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

The Opening Gala Dinner and Comedy Night events have already been sold out, so hurry and book your seats for the other remaining events before they are gone as well! Gather eight of your wittiest friends and join our SuperBrains Challenge on Saturday 4 June. On Sunday, come down to the Singapore Turf Club for the Ladies Day at the QEII Cup. Couples, come dressed in your Sunday best and stand a chance to win the Best Hat and Best Dressed Couple. And of course, enjoy a delectable three-course lunch prepared by Chef Mark Greenaway, paired with fine wines. On Wednesday, 8 June, we will be having our Prize Bingo Night at The Windsor Arms, hosted by our very own Tony Melero. There will be fantastic prizes up for grabs too. The West End Dinner and Cabaret Show on Thursday 9 June features highly acclaimed West End of London musical artiste Emma Dears. Finally as promised, this year’s Grand Finale has been slated to be the biggest and grandest one yet. Be transported back in time to a lost era of splendour and elegance, of Earls and Countesses in a one of a kind Downton Abbey Ball. It doesn’t get any more British than that! With summer hot on our heels, the urge to jet off to some faraway exotic destination must be on most of your minds. Do take the opportunity to make the most out of your membership by utilizing the reciprocal privileges with other overseas clubs and exclusive hotel deals, a special privilege only for The British Club members. DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which this year is Thursday, 9 June. The festival commemorates the death of the popular poet and government official Qu Yuan in 230BC. In protest against anomalies in the government, Qu Yuan ended his life by throwing himself into the Mi-lo River in Hunan province, central China. One of his most respected works, expressing his views on political morals, is “Li-Sao” (“The Lament”). Fishermen in boats tried unsuccessfully to save him, and then threw rice dumplings into the water for his soul. Another version is that the fishermen threw the dumplings into the river for the fish, so they would not eat Qu Yuan’s body. Nowadays for this popular festival, dragon boats, symbolising the fishermen’s boats, participate in noisy and colourful races, representing efforts to scare away fish and save the honourable gentleman. These days, pyramid-shape steamed glutinous-rice dumplings are exchanged between relatives and friends. Popular varieties include the Hokkien version with a savoury filling of pork and dried prawns, traditionally wrapped in bamboo leaves; the Cantonese type with streaky-pork, mushrooms and chestnuts, customarily wrapped in lotus leaves; and the Nonya dumpling (to which I am partial) with its sweetened pork filling, wrapped in pandanus leaves. Having tried, unsuccessfully, to wrap dumplings elegantly, I can attest to the skill it takes! Dumpling photograph courtesy Marina Mandarin Singapore; dragon boat, Raelene Tan.

INHERITANCE TAX – THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM FOR BRITISH EXPATS By Martin Rimmer

In April we received the sad news of Ronnie Corbett’s passing. It was reported at the time that prior to the comedian’s death, and while suffering motor neurone disease, he sold his £1.3 million family home in a bid to save his children a ‘six figure’ tax bill. It is a high profile illustration of the need to plan for Inheritance Tax or IHT. IHT is a tax on an individual’s estate that can reach a whopping 40% of everything that is left behind over a threshold of £325,000. It can be arcane and complex to navigate. Expats who think they are not eligible for IHT could be in for a rude surprise. With moves afoot to expand the definition of UK domicile in 2017 Inheritance Tax planning should be on everyone’s agenda. As is often the case with these things the best tax planning solutions are often the simple ones. There are a raft of straightforward and accepted means by which IHT can be reduced and each will depend on individual circumstances. The first consideration is transferral of the ‘nil rate band’. This allows claims for all or part of an unused nil rate band, up to £325,000 on the death of a spouse or a civil partner to be passed to a surviving spouse. From 2017, an additional nil-rate band of £100,000 will be available when a home is passed on death to a direct descendant incrementally increasing by £25,000 per year, up to £175,000 in the year 2020. ‘Gifting’ is another popular means of managing inheritance. If during your lifetime you give something to a friend or a family member, who is not your spouse or civil partner, and you no longer enjoy any benefit from it, the value of the gift will fall out of your estate. That is if you survive the gift by seven years. Anything you leave to a UK or EEA charity is also free of Inheritance Tax. If you leave at least 10% of your estate to charity, it will reduce the rate at which Inheritance Tax is calculated to 36% rather than 40%. And life insurance policies are available to cover future IHT liabilities. This measure won’t reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax due, but the insurance proceeds will make it easier for the surviving family to pay the bill. Finally you can leave payment in lieu of taxes in certain cases such as artwork although this is relatively rare. The reality is that IHT is complicated but important. The biggest obstacle to discussing IHT can be the embarrassment or perceived intrusive of raising inheritance with family members. But in reality confronting the elephant in the room, planning and making a will now can mean the difference between passing wealth to loved ones that will support them in the future and leaving a sizeable chunk of tax affairs to sort out.

At The Fry Group we have extensive experience in Will writing, identifying Inheritance Tax exposures and working with you to come up with sensible and workable solutions. advice@thefrygoup.sg • Tel: +65 6225 0825 • www.thefrygroupsg.com The information in this article aims to provide information. MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

15

MEMBER

IN THE SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member In The Spotlight, we are delighted to feature a member from Singapore’s political scene, Mahdev Mohan. Mahdev joined the Club in 2015. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Law at the Singapore Management University and a Nominated Member of Parliament.

1) What brought you to The British Club and why?

The Open House the Club ran earlier last year sealed the deal for me. The great service from Ronnie, Ned,

Stephan, Inthu, Sharonjit and others really impressed, and I continue to be impressed whenever I visit with

friends or family.

2) What do you love most about The British Club?

That it sits atop the rainforest reserve of Bukit Tinggi and yet, when you step inside, is able to transport you to

London. Magical.

3) As an Assistant Professor of Law at the Singapore Management University and a Nominated Member of Parliament,

how do you balance your work life and family life?

With great patience from the wife and family, I assure you! It’s a process. I’m still learning to strike that balance

from others who are far busier than me. Every week is an opportunity to fine-tune that balance of learning,

teaching, work and play.

4) Can you share with us an interesting experience you have had with your students as an Assistant Professor of Law?

When we worked on a project to represent Cambodian genocide victims before a United Nations-backed court

in Phnom Penh. That experience was equally challenging and meaningful for the students, other lawyers and

myself, and has inspired our abiding interest in international law and justice.

5) When you need to get-away, you will go to…

The British Club, of course!

Italy is the world’s largest wine producer by volume and that represents about one-third of global production. Grapes are grown in almost every region of the country and there are more than one million vineyards under cultivation. Understanding of Italian wine becomes clearer with an understanding of the differences between each region; their cuisines reflect their indigenous wines and vice versa. We are happy to have Mr Luca Maida with us this month to share with us on the insights of Italian wines. Luca is born in Rome and graduated in Italy in Social Science; however, with a strong passion for wines, he decided to join the wine business. Before coming to Singapore, Luca have been in the food and beverage management for over 10 years working in both Dubai and Hong Kong. Luca is also a certified Sommelier with a WSET Level 3.

A PI LOT ’S WATCH SH O U L D EN DU R E E VERY T H I N G T H E PI LOT DO E S . The Bremont MB range is built in collaboration with British firm Martin-Baker, the pioneers of the ejection seat. At their test centre, the watches are strapped to the wrist of a crash-test dummy and shot out of the cockpit. Enduring forces of between 12G and 30G in the process. But this doesn’t mean the MB is built for endurance at the expense of performance. It’s a beautifully-engineered mechanical chronometer certified 99.998% accurate by COSC.

SPORTS & FITNESS GOLF:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS

BY NIC MERROW-SMITH

NEWS FROM THE GREENS All things English; a big high-five to our heroes at the 80th Masters in Augusta. For once I make no apologies for being an Englishman, with four of my fellow countryman making the top 10; Matthew Fitzpatrick, Paul Casey, Lee Westwood and Danny Willet (you may well be asking, who’s that?) Last month I posted a picture of Jordan Spieth at the Singapore Open, who capitulated to Song Young Han of South Korea. This month it was the turn of Danny Willet to turn the screws on Jordan Spieth, who suffered a meltdown through “Amen Corner.” Quite fitting then that Danny Willet, son of a Yorkshire vicar, should emerge US Master’s Champion.

APRIL STABLEFORD REPORT FROM BINTAN LAGOON SEA VIEW COURSE We had a great day over in Bintan on 24th April where we all found the Jack Nicklaus course to our liking. A timely rain delay coincided with a long lunch break where we recharged on burgers and chicken curry. Resisting the temptation to call it a day and just drink beer, we tackled the back 9 where scoring improved considerably. In a closely contested game, Mike Humphrey emerged the overall prize winner on count back, with a very steady round and 40 stableford points. The not so tidy Nic Merrow-Smith, with a sextuple bogey on his card, shared the Order of Merit points but not the prize. In perfect conditions, the par 3’s alluded our field of 9 with the exception of Nic, who walked off with both Nearest the Pin prizes and will be spending a couple of evenings in The Windsor Arms. A big thanks to everyone for taking part, especially Mike Humphrey for his ‘bring-a-guest’ spirit. I end my report with a personal thanks to the group for encouraging my son Daniel, who after a difficult front nine, got himself together and went back out and played the last nine holes to handicap.

Yes, people really do play golf in them. Greg Atack in Loudmouth pants, with Tony Prose and Pelin Managbanag approaching.

Daniel gets us underway on the fantastic Jack Nicklaus Sea View Course.

Mike Humphrey, here finishing on the 9th for a 3,4,4,4,4,5 finish and a Mountbatten Dining experience.

Raring to go, from left to right; Graeme Jacombs, David Christie, Nic and Daniel Merrow-Smith, and John Hancock.

Taekwondo is Korea’s National sport and its immense international popularity has made it one of the fastest growing martial art forms in the world. Taekwondo is recognized as an Olympic sport and is governed by the World Taekwondo Federation, which The British Club is a member of through its affiliation with the Singapore Taekwondo Federation. As a Martial Art form, Taekwondo is a great medium to learn how to improve ones attention, agility, discipline and general fitness regardless of age or gender.

TAEKWONDO AT THE BRITISH CLUB Our club is proud to offer Taekwondo training to students of all ages and abilities, involving both Poomsae (Forms) and Kyorugi (Sparring) training. Both children and adults participate in our training sessions and we have recently welcomed families to join our sessions. The training sessions are conducted by very experienced instructors. Our Chief Instructor, Mr. Andy Tan, has been practicing Taekwondo for over 30 years and is a certified Third Degree Black Belt of the Singapore Taekwondo Federation. Under his tutelage, his students have gone on to achieve remarkable results in their Taekwondo examinations and numerous competitions and tournaments. Our training is not only focused on belt promotion but also on how to improve skill and technique, which has resulted in our club’s success in many National tournaments.

OUR RECENT SUCCESS IN NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS National Poomsae Tournament 2015: 3 Gold, 1 Silver, 4 Bronze National Demonstration Tournament 2015: 5 Gold, 4 Silver, 6 Bronze

Taekwondo has become a way of life. I first joined The British Club Taekwondo section in October 2014 and have been thrilled to see great progress in my abilities- true testament to fantastic training and inspiring instructors. I have had the opportunity to participate in National tournaments and to train with a dedicated team of students and instructors. I enjoyed the training sessions so much that I just had to involve my family, too!

TENNIS:

ADRENALIN-FUELLED TOURNAMENTS AND SAD GOODBYES Edited by Julia Fenton MASTERS TOURNAMENT… The Masters tournament, the Club tennis event for the more mature members, was held in March and April and as always, provided a successful and exciting day for both competitors and supporters. The event this year launched an interesting new angle with the inclusion of the “Super Masters” category, ably won by Peter Gregory who was on top sparkling form; congratulations Peter! We would like to extend our warm thanks to all winners and participants for their marvellous enthusiasm in ensuring that a competitive yet friendly Masters tournament was once again a highlight of our tennis season. Thanks must also be given to the host of encouraging supporters and to our incredible Scores staff for ensuring the players were well fed and watered (including the odd glass or two of something stronger of course!); Lay Chi and Kelly must be given particular thanks for so capably sorting and re-sorting the courts throughout the course of the actionpacked day.

FOND FAREWELLS… This time of year is often tinged with some melancholy, as it marks the departure from Singapore of many of our members. This year we bid thank you and cheerio to Sarah Smith, who for many years ran the Ladies Ladder and Vari Gibson who has put in sterling efforts to establish and run our Teen Social each Sunday; we will miss her energy and drive. She and her family are returning to Edinburgh and she has an interesting tennis fact to share about her home country, regarding Britain’s oldest tennis court which is at Falkland Palace in the village of Falkland near Cupar in Fife.

You drive, we care

The court was built for James V in 1539 and was called “Royal tennis”. It had 3 walls around it and a 4th was for spectators. Players could hit by playing off all surfaces; rather like squash and there were also openings in the vertical walls like letterboxes where you could score by hitting straight in to them. The courts at Falkland palace still have an active membership and matches are still played there. So if you’re visiting Scotland this summer, head to Falkland Palace and view the courts. Apparently the tea-rooms have delicious scones as well… Do let us know if you have any interesting tennis facts to share…

SPORTS & FITNESS SWIMMING:

SWIMMING SECTION REPORT JUNE/ JULY 2016 By Tory Morris

THIS MONTH: Barracudas Annual Swimming Gala - Sunday 12 June 8am-12pm This month we take a look at land- based training for swimmers, something to think about over the summer!

LAND BASED TRAINING The long summer break is looming, it’s a time when many of us are away from Singapore, far away from the delights of our warm, open air, palm-tree lined swimming pool at The British Club! The appeal of swim training may be slightly dampened when faced with a chlorine-laden local public pool in the UK, or elsewhere less tropical. It’s a great time to work on your core, it will improve your general strength, and just watch your PB’s tumble once you are back in the pool next season! Here are some ideas to keep the whole family fit and get you all pool ready for the new season: Our younger Swimmers – concentrate on developing coordination through play! Running, jumping, crawling, tumbling! Some ideas are: forward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, leapfrogs, wheelbarrows! Find a huge patch of grass and just have fun! Our 8-14year olds

– we can start to build body strength using only your own weight.

Hold a plank for 1 minute Practice flutter kicks on your back for 30 secs Do push ups & pull ups Skipping & barefoot running Squats 14 years and upwards

– further developing coordination and control

As above, but add in some of the things we all hate, like Burpees & lunges. Take the time for some Yoga or Pilates and mix it up with some running, a great fun way to get the whole family running are park runs. Check out: www.parkrun.com which organises free, weekly 5km timed runs around the world. Play tag with the little ones, or some rounders on the beach!

We hope that has offered you a little bit of inspiration! Wishing all of our Learn to Swim, Barracudas and Masters a very relaxing and enjoyable summer, see you back at the pool in late August. If you have any queries, issues or ideas, please email us at: swimming@britishclub.org.sg

ULSTER REFORM CLUB

The club opened its doors for the first time on 1st January 1885 and, since that date, many things have changed. However, the club remains a meeting place for the business leaders of Belfast and, now, further afield. The club has all the facilities you expect from a private members’ club, including the Dining Room where members can host friends to lunch, the Members’ Bar where members and their guests can enjoy refreshments which includes local beers and a selection of fine wines, and the Reading Room where a selection of periodicals and daily newspapers are available for your perusal. The business room is an area where members can freely use mobile phones and laptops. The room is equipped with four workstations, and is Wi-Fi enabled. Members can hold casual business meetings in this room, which is furnished with comfortable seating and coffee tables. Unfortunately, the club currently has no bedrooms. However, they have two excellent hotels in Belfast where members and reciprocal members can avail of preferential rates, namely Malmaison and Jurys inn. Both groups’ local properties are a short walk from the club.
