2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE
Dear Members, This year’s Lunar New Year arrived much sooner than most but I do hope that you were able to celebrate with family and loved ones. For those who missed out on the festivities in January, be sure to mark your calendars for our exciting events lined up for the month of February. This year, Members can take part in the traditional Yu Sheng or Prosperity Toss, an integral custom of the Lunar New Year celebrations, held at both the Windsor Arms and Verandah Café from 12 January to 11 February. There will also be a special a la carte menu, Lunar New Year family steamboat and a Lunar New Year buffet available at the Verandah Café during this period. With the Christmas festivities behind us, the wet season ending and the haze hopefully long gone, now is the time to get back into sport and make full use of the outdoor activities and dining opportunities at the Club. I’m sure there are many out there with New Year’s resolutions to fulfill! You may be aware that on the first Thursday of every month, we host the Members Connect Night. Weather permitting, this event takes place at the Treetops Terrace, which is a fabulous venue overlooking our lovely grounds and with commanding views of the surrounding parts of Singapore (great for a function or private party). Members have the opportunity to network as well as meet the Main Committee and the Management team over a few drinks and light bites. Come along and join us at this event which is open to both new and current Members alike. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr. David Wong as a member of the Main Committee. David will be chairing the Membership and Rules Committee and I have full confidence in his capability to lead that team. All of our Sub-Committees are also back in full swing, having resumed their monthly meetings after the holiday break. During the month of February you will be asked to participate in a survey covering many aspects of the Club. We last conducted this full exercise in 2014 and the feedback received from the surveys is extremely useful in guiding strategy in many areas. Every response will be analysed and considered in the follow-up sessions so you will certainly not be wasting your time. I therefore strongly encourage you to take the time to participate and to air your views on the Club. Gong Xi Fa Cai to all, and here’s to a great year ahead. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

GM’S MESSAGE 3 CLUB MANAGEMENT
Dear Members, Best wishes to everyone this New Year! I hope 2017 is off to a good start for all. Though the Lunar New Year celebrations at the Club have concluded in January, there are still various dining promotions available at our various food outlets from 12 January until 11 February. Savour a taste of local delicacies during this festive period. As the most romantic occasion of the year beckons, treat that special someone to an exquisite 6-course set dinner at our Valentine’s Day Special at the Mountbatten Room on Tuesday, 14 February. A bottle of our premium house wine is included for each couple to kick off the celebrations. Seats are limited, so do book early to avoid disappointment. Come 28 February, the Club will also be celebrating Shrove Tuesday, better known as Pancake Day back in the UK. Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the period of Lent, an observance ceremony before Easter Sunday. Join us at the Windsor Arms as we kick off this time-honoured tradition with our delicious offering of pancakes. And in March, honour the Patron Saints of Wales and Ireland as we celebrate St. David’s Day on Wednesday, 1 March and St. Patrick’s Day on Friday, 17 March. After 4 great years of hosting the Best of British, we are once again excited to announce that the Club will be organising it again this year – its biggest and most exhilarating yet. What makes this year even more special is that it will be the Best of British’s 5th anniversary. Expect an unrivalled 14-day celebration of grandiose proportions as we pull out all the stops to make the Best of British 2017 our best one yet. If you are keen to participate in this event as a sponsor or partner, please do not hesitate to contact us at 6410 1111 or email marketing@britishclub.org.sg. We have many opportunities to showcase your brand or company as part of the Best of British celebrations, so we do hope that you take this opportunity to support the Club and this event. 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LIFE INSURANCE By Ashley Jones, Financial Planning Consultant, The Fry Group (Singapore)
Life insurance may not be your favourite subject, but most of us recognise that it deserves consideration. For those who haven’t made provision, the biggest barriers tend to be scepticism about whether life insurers will pay out or more frequently a natural tendency to put off planning for the worst. However, life insurance is important and it should be part of your financial planning.
• If your earnings are critical for your family’s welfare you need life Insurance: Benjamin Franklin said “Nothing is certain except death
and taxes”. What is uncertain is when death will occur. Leaving individuals who depend on you with insufficient funds can be avoided by simply discussing the merits of a well-established and low cost policy.
• Life insurance does not represent the value of someone’s life: It is easier if you look at life insurance for what it really is – not a price on
your life but a risk management strategy to protect your family’s financial future in your absence. A good life insurance policy mitigates the inevitable consequences that follows on loss of life and provides a sense of security to the bereaved.
• It doesn’t need to be expensive: Life insurance does not have to be costly. It might suit you better to purchase a simple term insurance
policy and not an investment/insurance amalgamation.
• Which life insurance? Term is your most simple and least expensive option. A life insurance company will base the policy premium on the
probability of the insured individual dying within a certain period- 10, 15, 20 years or longer. The premiums are guaranteed for the term and the policy then ceases or you decide to reinsure. If you are still alive at the end of that period, there is no value paid out to you, but you have paid the insurance company to take risk off your hands.
• Calculate what you need: A simple approach would be to multiply the breadwinner’s earnings by the number of years you will have
dependants. So, if you currently require SGD200K per annum as a family, your children will be dependent for a further 10 years (all being well) and you have a mortgage of SGD1m the calculation would be: - SGD200K X 10 = SGD2 million - SGD2 million plus SGD1 million (the mortgage) reaching a total of SGD3 million
• Flexibility: Things change so establish a policy which you can cancel at a later date.
• Will it pay out? There is a gap between consumer perception and reality. A survey by Drewberry in the UK indicated most people believe
less than half of life policies pay out. The reality is closer to 99%. Selecting a large, well-regulated company that publishes their pay out statistics, reduces risk in this respect. While death and loss are not pleasant subjects to dwell on, preparing for it is vital to the wellbeing of the living. Open and honest discussions about planning for the unexpected can be surprisingly reassuring and brings peace of mind to all involved. “OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan
CHINGAY
The Lunar New Year of the Rooster was welcomed on Saturday, 28 January amidst much fanfare. As part of the annual 15-day celebrations, a dazzling street parade is held in Singapore, said to be the biggest of its kind in Asia. At 8.00pm on the two dates of Friday, 10 February and Saturday, 11 February the area around the F1 Pit Building will be transformed by approximately 8,000 performers and 2,000 volunteers, plus thousands of expectant spectators. First held in 1973, Chingay, which means something akin to ‘the art of masquerading’ in the Chinese Hokkien dialect, is now a much anticipated part of Lunar New Year celebrations, attracting international attention. Chingay was born when firecrackers were banned in Singapore in 1972 due to safety reasons. These days, the noise of exploding firecrackers, believed to scare away evil spirits, has been replaced by drums, cymbals and other musical instruments that are an integral component of this colourful street parade. This year is Chingay’s 45th anniversary, with the theme ‘WeCare Singapore’. Singaporean and international contingents encompass creative floats, lion and dragon dances, stilt walkers, martial arts exponents, singers, dancers, musicians and sports teams, all participating in a proud display of multi-culturalism, together with agile flag bearers, jugglers and big-headed Chinese ‘dolls’, among others. It is heartwarming to see what was initially a showcase of Chinese culture, now embrace a multitude of ethnic customs and cultures. Enjoy Chingay and the rest of the Lunar New Year celebrations! MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 15
MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are happy to present to you Adrian Holloway and his family. Adrian joined the Club in June 2016. He currently holds the position of Chief Financial Officer at Crocs Asia Pacific. In this special interview, Adrian shares with us some insights about the Club and his professional life.
1) What brought you to The British Club?
We were very excited to join The British Club this summer. It particularly appealed to us because of the focus on family
and the happy, welcoming atmosphere. Together with our children, Thomas, Luke and Alice, my wife and I have enjoyed
many of the special events this year, particular highlights being Singapore’s National Day and the Halloween party. We are
also really enjoying the new look Windsor Arms, which has quickly become our favourite Sunday Lunch in Singapore.
2) As a Member of The British Club, what is the one thing you find is unique about the Club?
For me, the staff go out of their way to make us feel welcome and it really does feel like a home, that matters and is really
appreciated.
3) As a CFO at Crocs Asia, how do you manage a proper work-life balance?
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance can be difficult, working in a very international role and travelling extensively, I
always need to keep perspective. I try to run several times a week, both outdoors in the Singapore heat and with a
personal trainer. There is no better way to de-stress. As a family we like to be active, my sons and I regularly go
paddle-boarding on Tanjong Beach at the weekends and numerous school teams the children are in lead us to many
different locations over the weekends.
4) What motivates or inspires you?
I like to see visible results, suggest that is part of my financial background. I enjoy being challenged, dealing with complex
conceptual situations and seeing them resolved, working in a high energy multi-cultural team.
5) What do you like about Singapore?
We just love Singapore, from the multi-cultural society, the stunning futuristic skyline that you see when the sun goes
down and the sheer variety of architecture that you see around every corner. It is an awesome place to live and work.

Enticing aromas that are strikingly similar to Viognier, with hints of white pear, white flowers and citrus fruit. On the palate, it has a beautiful structure and acidity along with enticing fruit flavours that keep you coming back for another sip. Plenty of body for a wine that shows such delicate aromas and flavours. Fruity, floral and yet still quite dry.
Dark reddish colour with aroma of ripe plums, freshly crushed cherries framed by light hints of sweet vanilla from the oak. In the mouth, the intense flavours of ripe red fruits mingle with red pepper notes typical of the Cabernet and lead to a long, juicy finish. HENDRICK’S GIN TASTING
Friday, 17 February • 6.30pm to 10.30pm Windsor Arms Hendrick’s Gin is made in very small batches of only 450 litres at a time. The smaller the batch, the more control can be exerted by master distiller Lesley Gracie and still man Alan Rimmer. Declared the ‘Best Gin in the World’ by The Wall Street Journal, 2003. The unusual distillation process, combined with their oddly delicious set of infusions of rose petals and cucumbers yields a one-ofa-kind gin that is passionately loved by a tiny yet growing handful of individuals all over the world. Hand-made in tiny batches, their tender approach is what makes Hendrick’s so divine. As many a gin drinker has been known to say, no other gin tastes like Hendrick’s because no other gin is made like Hendrick’s. Join us this February as we put together a Hendrick’s Gin Tasting at the Windsor Arms.

Established in 2008, Collis-Riondo is one of the largest and most important wine producers in Veneto and in Italy. With over 6,000 hectares of vineyards that are managed daily by more than 2,400 associated farmers, the vineyards cover the main production zones, appellations and grape varieties of the region: Prosecco, Soave, Valpolicella, Ripasso, Amarone, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Garganega e Corvina being the most renowned among local and international consumers. The wines from these vineyards are bottled by Collis-Riondo under various brands, each with its own precise identity and quality profile. The main brands are Riondo (sparkling DOC and varietal), Casa Burti (generic sparkling), Casa Lunardi (still Veneto wines), Castelforte (premium still Veneto wines) and i-Riondo (cocktails). We are happy to have Pierluigi with us this month to share with us their wines. Pierluigi was born in Valpolicella, Verona in a family of wine producers and wine lovers. Since young, he has had the chance to travel around Italy and be exposed to its varied wine regions and environment. After completing his Master’s Degree in Law, he joined the Italian Association of Sommeliers to train further about wines and service techniques. Pierluigi joined Cantine CollisRiondo as an Asia Manager in 2015 and is currently a member on the Board of Directors of the Italian Association of Singapore.

SPORTS & FITNESS 47 GOLF:
GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Dick Burton Allow me a short introduction as the celebrity editor for this quarter, Dick Burton. I’m famed for winning The Open in 1939 and holding on to the trophy for 7 years (unchallenged I may add). I’m from Lancashire and once challenged a competitor to a match with me using just a putter. The lad beat me on the 18th! Anyroad, enough about myself, let’s talk about golf. 2017 arrives with double the amount of golf. We will offer two bites at the cherry for those wishing to participate in the Order of Merit. Each month we will host a Friday and a Saturday outing. In addition, you will accumulate match points when representing The British Club, so there’s no shortage of ways to amass points. The Fixture List is unfashionably late this year, or we may just wing it. Look for updates on our Facebook page, The British Club Golf Section, and through our WhatsApp chat group. To register for events, you must still contact the Sports Office.
ORDER OF MERIT 2016
Congratulations to Nic Merrow-Smith, romping home with the Golf Secton’s 2016 Order of Merit. The challengers arrived too late in the season to make a difference and Nic took the honours with an ordinary round at Ria Bintan in December last year. Nic should be congratulated for his steady play throughout the year which saw back to back wins at on the Ocean Course at Bintan Lagoon and the Sime Course at SICC in April and May 2016, followed by the win on tour at Bali National Golf Club in September. “It’s been a great year and with great company. Along the way, I managed to play a few good rounds and secure enough points to retain the Order of Merit,” says Nic. Colin Allcard, John Hancock and David Christie all finished with over 30 points, a few points adrift of the 36.5 winning total. Nic shares a moment with Charles Pierron at Orchid Country Club.
MONDAY NIGHT GOLF LEAGUE - ORCHID COUNTRY CLUB
Team British Club finished the year in high spirits and assured us they are preparing for a major push to secure honours in 2017. They are in the market for high handicap golfers who can put in the occasional ‘brilliant’ round and fly below the handicap radar. I was there to see them limp away empty handed on the last night of the league without so much as a lucky draw prize! This year will be our year, so sign-up lest you regret.
Front Row: John Hancock, Chris Taylor, Gary Doyle, Kenny Cowgill. Back Row: Deke Pedrick, Ashley Morris.
The frustration is clearly visible as the last lucky draw prize ebbs away.
DECEMBER STABLEFORD - RIA BINTAN GOLF CLUB, OCEAN BLUE AND OCEAN GREEN Eight of us made our way to Ria for a lazy day’s golf. On arrival, we settled into our lunch before going out on the course. Very few of us found the fairway after that, but things did improve as the round went on. Round of the day went to our guest Deke Pedrick with 36 points. Colin Allcard won the event, runner up was Richard Holloway on count back from John Hancock. Nearest the pin prizes went to Colin Allcard but he graciously agreed that young Thomas Holloway had outplayed him on the one hole. Thoughts on Ria Bintan: very much a work in progress after renovation, this year we will probably look to Desaru to cap off the year on the new Ernie Els course.
losing out the year at Ria Bintan; Colin, Deke, Richard, Thomas, John, Graeme, David, Nic
Deke Pedrick gets the Convenor’s edible prize for the round of the day at Ria Bintan.
RESULTS British Club December Stableford, Ria Bintan Winner: Colin Allcard, 35 points Runner-up: Richard Holloway, 34 points on count back from John Hancock. Nearest the Pin, Hole #2: Colin Allcard Nearest the Pin, Hole #17: Thomas Holloway
UP AND COMING EVENTS Our first outing of the year had kicked off on Friday, 20 January. For more details of our other fixtures for 2017, please contact Wan Lay Chi at wanlaychi@britishclub.org.sg

SPORTS & FITNESS 49 TENNIS:
TENNIS SECTION REPORT By Mitali Das
Now that we have had a month to recover from the holiday season and get back into shape, it’s time to dust off our British Club uniforms and start the 2017 WITS season again. 6 February kicks off another competitive season for our ladies. Best of luck to all teams. February is also the start of the Lacoste Junior Tennis League which runs through to May. We have had a number of our young teams win in their Division but more importantly they have had great match experiences. Good luck to all our young tennis stars. The Club will host the Mixed Doubles Mini Tournament on the weekend of 4 and 5 February. So grab your partners and join in the fun. Details will follow. We wrapped up the year in December with a number of social events in the Tennis Section. These are some pictures from the Red Hat Social, the Ladies Ladder Social and the kids Lacoste Award Night.
ARRIVAL OF NEW TENNIS COACH IVERSON A warm welcome to Coach Iverson who just joined The British Club a couple of days ago! Coach Iverson is a professional tennis coach who has won many titles in both singles & doubles in Brazilian Professional Tournaments. He is experienced in training junior & adult athletes who have gone on to win several State and National level Tennis Tournaments and is the head coach of the Maringa Club Tennis Team. We believe that with Coach Iverson & our fellow coaches (Coach Darren, Cyril & Sam), our tennis teams will achieve a higher level of tennis & plays in time to come. We hope that parents and players will continue to give their unwavering support to them.

SPORTS & FITNESS 51 SQUASH:
CHEERS, TEARS AND BEERS By The Boaster Last month’s article covered the The British Club’s final two Cosmo League matches but left you all in suspense over our placing as there was a final round to be played (while we had a bye). Yes – I know you were barely able to enjoy your Lunar New Year celebrations while you wondered. For once the Squash Gods smiled upon us as the results went our way and even without more James Bauly heroics we found ourselves in the top three for the first time anyone but the most grizzled veteran (cough . . . Vinosaur . . . cough) can remember. Not only that, but at the end-of-season banquet at the Hollandse Club, The British Club was voted “most hospitable” amongst the seven clubs – a testimony not just to the playing squad but our ‘teammates’ in the Sports Office and at Scores. Thank you to all of them. Last month I also reported that Craig Telmer and Andrew Vine had been elected to serve as co-conveners in 2017. There were a number of other big announcements that day though. We have three annual awards created by our previous convener, Jan, which are announced along with the new committee. Andy Greenaway was voted our most improved player, Andrew Marshall was given the Good Fellowship award and James Bauly (him again) was named ‘most competitive’. Well done to all three.
Convenor Craig congratulates Cosmo skipper Jamie on being the league’s biggest party animal. Cheers for the Beers
Thus ends our season of the Monkey. The Rooster will bring us more great competition, more great friendship and more great squash. Time will tell whether we will be crowing at the end of the year, or whether we’ll have laid an egg.
