2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE

Dear Members, I am pleased to report that we had a good turnout for our 35th Annual General Meeting. A good deal of information about the club was provided to those gathered in the Elizabeth Suite and some healthy and constructive discussion ensued. Thirteen members contested the ten places available on the Main Committee and, following their election, I would like to welcome Ms Sarah McNee, Mr Duncan McGilligan and Mr Roger Harrold as new members of the Main Committee. The Main Committee has already started work on a mid-term strategy and it, and the various sub-committees, have resumed their program of meetings. With the Christmas festivities behind us, and, I hope, the wet season ending, now is the time to get back into sport and make full use of the outdoor and gym facilities at the Club. I’m sure there are many out there with New Year’s resolutions to fulfill! Lunar New Year falls in February this year and I do hope that you will take the opportunity to participate in some of the traditional events around the club. Also during the month of February there will be the regular Wine and Gourmet dinner, featuring wines from the Bordeaux region of France, and a Valentine’s Day dinner at Mountbatten Bar and Grill on the 14th. You may be aware that on the first Thursday of every month we host a Members Connect Night. Weather permitting, this event takes place at the Treetops Terrace, which is a fabulous venue overlooking our lovely grounds and with commanding views of the surrounding parts of Singapore (great for a function or private party). Members have the opportunity to network as well as meet the Main Committee and the Management team over a few drinks and light bites. Come along and join us at this event which is open to both new and current Members alike.

Unfortunately, and unusually, I must take a little space to comment on some recent complaints. It has been reported, on more than one occasion, that members have been heard using foul language during conversations. This has offended others, particularly those with families, and I ask that all members are considerate in their choice of words. I wish you a prosperous and happy Lunar New Year. DAMIAN R. GM MESSAGE 3 CLUB MANAGEMENT

Dear Members, I hope you have had an excellent start to 2018. Firstly, some good news to share: The British Club has been voted as the gold winner for the Expat Living Readers’ Choice Awards 2018 for the best Social/Sports Club in Singapore. We are honored to emerge as the gold winner alongside The American Club as the silver winner, Tanglin Club as the bronze winner and Singapore Cricket Club as a finalist. This award will serve as a reminder for us to continue to innovate and be the leading International Club in Singapore, exceeding the expectations of our Members and their families. Join us this February as we unveil a brand new menu in the newly renamed Mountbatten Bar and Grill. As the name would suggest, we will be introducing a brand new selection of premium grilled Australian Black Angus grass-fed steaks, from a classic fillet, rib eye to a 28-day aged sirloin or try one of our grilled beef to share dishes with a choice of a 35 day aged 900g Porterhouse or 1.1kg Prime Rib. We are also debuting a wide selection of Gins on our new Gin trolley all paired with a selection of Britain’s favourite Fever Tree Tonics; As Winston Churchill once said: ‘The gin and tonic has saved more Englishmen’s lives, and minds, than all the doctors in the Empire’. A new menu in Scores Sports Bar will also be launched from 1st February with a focus on better quality rather than then quantity, all the favorites remain but we have added some new healthier salads, sandwiches, pasta and burgers which include the new homemade veggie burgers. We have even introduced a refreshing and healthy dessert option with our new “build your own Acai” all the way from the Amazon Forrest in Brazil. If you’re a coffee lover, head down to any of our outlets to try our new Illy coffee. A singular illy blend of nine highest-order Arabica beans, these beans are carefully selected and purchased by illy to guarantee you a symphony of rich and multi-faceted coffee like no other. If you flip through the magazine this month, you’ll notice that we have a brand new section for our Main Committee Members. This section will serve to introduce and feature our Main Committee Members in the coming months and tell us more about what they do for the Club. In the Windsor Arms we will be celebrating St. David’s Day on 1 March to honor Wales’ Patron Saint, whilst enjoying some traditional Welsh dishes and please refer to the magazine under food & beverages to find the specially curated lunch for Mother’s Day in March. To all Members, Gong Xi Fa Cai and happy Lunar New Year!

THE BRITISH CLUB

COMMITTEE IN THE SPOTLIGHT 9

Q&A 1.

What is your role on the Main Committee? Marketing Communications. During the AGM in November, I was elected onto the Main Committee. My main role is to chair the Marketing Communications Committee. Working on projects with the British Club Marketing Team, General Manager and a sub-committee of member volunteers who all have experience in Marketing.

2.

What motivated you to join the Main Committee? Having been on the MARCOMMS sub-committee for 2 ½ years and an active member, I felt ready to put myself forward. My whole family is involved in different areas of the club. The kids are on the Teen Committee and my husband is a cricket convener.

3. How long have you been a Member at The British Club? 8 years. My family have grown up at the club and the children see it as their second home. Background I was born in the UK and grew up in Cheddar (where Cheddar Cheese was first produced) in beautiful Somerset. I am married to an Australian and have 2 children, aged 12 and 10, who attend Dover Court International School. Having lived and worked in London for 17 years and Melbourne, Australia for 4 years, we moved to Singapore in 2007. I have extensive experience in marketing, having worked for large multi-nationals, small and medium sized enterprises; I even had my own retail outlet in The Trocadero, London Piccadilly. My experience runs across Brand, Sponsorship, Event Management, PR and Website Project Management. I’ve been lucky to work with some great companies including BMG Records, Vodafone, Village Roadshow, Telstar Entertainment, Emirates, L’Oréal, Lion Nathan Breweries and UK Charity Lotteries.

4. What is your favourite spot at the Club? Poolside, chatting and having a drink with other parents whilst waiting for my daughter to finish swim training. 5.

Which is your favourite restaurant and favourite dish at the Club? Now that the children are getting older, we enjoy sitting in the Windsor Arms. My son is addicted to the steak and chips in there and would eat it every night if we let him! Personally, my favourite dish is the Murg Tikka with Raita. The Indian food at the club is first class.

6.

What do you do when you are not at the Club? When I’m not busy running the kids around, I love to exercise – Bootcamp, Boxing, Cycling, Walking and Running. I also enjoy studying and have recently completed some marketing courses to keep up with the trends.

7. In 3 words, how would you describe the Club? Friendly, Family, Relaxing 8. How long have you lived in Singapore? 10 years. Like a lot of expats, we came on a 2 year posting and are still here. 9. Where do you dine outside of the Club? Chop Suey, Dempsey is an old favourite. 10. What is your favourite movie of all time? The Sound of Music – An oldie but a goody. 11. What is your favourite band/singer? Having worked in the music industry for many years, I have a broad taste in music, but if I had to be pushed I do like a bit of Coldplay playing in the car. 12. What is your favourite sport? Growing up it was Judo. As a child, I was the South-West Champion of England. Recently, I have developed a passion for football as both my children are massive Chelsea football fans and keen players. 13. What is your favourite drink? COFFEE – I couldn’t survive without my first cup of the day. 14. Best place for retail therapy? As my husband’s from Perth, Australia, I tend to go every year and do a big shop. I’m tall so I find the clothes there fit me better. When I shop in Singapore, I like Desigual and shopping at Tiffany’s. YOUR 2018 FINANCIAL PLANNING CHECKLIST By David Pugh, Director, The Fry Group

The start of a new year is always busy, and as a result dealing with your finances often gets put on the back-burner. Some of you may have put your finances at the top of your New Year’s resolutions and are already thinking about this (and if you have well done!), but for many of you this probably isn’t the case. If you missed this off your resolutions list, then don’t worry. Even though 2018 is in full swing, now is as good a time as any to get your finances in shape so that you can enjoy life as an expat in Singapore. Here is my checklist for helping British expats with their financial planning in 2018: 1)

Make sure you are aware your HMRC obligations It pays to keep close to HMRC. Check you are up to date with your taxes, that your residence status is correct, and make sure your address and contact details are up to date. Have you claimed all the relevant refunds and allowances? A clean bill-of health with HMRC can work wonders for you further down the line.

2)

Understand changes around UK property With huge amount of change in legislation around the taxation of UK property in the last 5 years, it is worth checking which apply to you. For example, do you have a 6th April 2015 valuation for your UK residential property? Have you made an election for Principal Private Residence and are you recording the time spent in your UK property? Is your mortgage fit for purpose? Do you understand the capital gains implications if you sell? These are all questions you should be asking.

3)

Make sure you have an up to date will Nobody likes to think about the worst happening and being an expat can throw up additional complications and considerations. It is sensible to consider drawing up a will in all jurisdictions where you hold significant assets. Consider having a power of attorney which will allow financial decisions to be made in the event that you or a loved one are incapacitated for any reason.

4)

Check your life insurance cover and protection Again no one wants to think about negative things, let alone at this time of year, but it’s worth being prepared. Do you have enough cover for critical illness or loss of income? It’s worth reviewing your needs, your current protection level and what alternative cover is available in today’s market.

5)

Review your financial goals Make sure your investments still reflect your goals and attitude to risk. Whether you want to be mortgage free in 10 years or retire in 5, you’re more inclined to stick to a plan if you have specific goals. Analysing your assets, liabilities, income and expenditure can help you to control your financial future to ensure that you stay on track and achieve your financial and lifestyle vision.

6) Be tax efficient with your investment strategy Make sure you integrate tax planning into your overall investment planning to ensure assets, liabilities and income are structured in the most optimal and tax efficient way. 7)

Review your pension provisions If like many others you are planning to live out your retirement somewhere other than the UK, do you understand each type of pension you have and have you reviewed the options available with them? It would be prudent planning to review all the options with your UK pensions, especially if you plan to retire outside of the UK.

8)

Running your own business If you are planning to strike out on your own business venture, then make sure that you plan your finances appropriately. Considerations include what will happen to the company if you decide to return to the UK, making sure you have appropriate insurance and for more established entities looking to expand; perhaps into the UK market.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 21

MEMBER IN THE

SPOTLIGHT

For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature Thiyagarajan and his family. Thiyagarajan joined the Club in June 2017. He is a Senior Lecturer at Singapore Polytechnic. In this interview, Thiyagarajan will share with us some insights about the Club and his life as an educator.

1) What brought you to The British Club and why? Not many places in Singapore that you can feel that you are getting away from the hustle and bustle of life. The British Club gives you that feel as you drive up the long and winding road. As you ascend the slope, the further away that pressures of life seem to leave you. I found that the meals are so reasonably priced that I can invite friends to the club for a class gathering and they can afford to pay for their meals. 2) Please tell us more about your line of work. I am Senior Lecturer with Singapore Polytechnic’s School of Business where I lecture on Public Relations and Advertising. Not an easy task given the students’ knack for making use of technology to access and process information. I have also learnt to say I don’t know as I realise that text book knowledge alone is insufficient to teach a subject. You have to be aware of a whole range of things and it is safer to say I don’t know than to pretend that you are master of all. The students can easily catch you out. 3) Is being an educator a rewarding experience? Definitely a rewarding experience! I have to be ahead of my students in thinking fast and being creative. Nurturing young minds and bringing out the creative best out of them is an exhausting and exhilarating affair. Which also explains why I need to retreat to the British Club to recharge myself. 4) Lastly, what is your motivation and what inspires you? My motivation is to make my students realise their potential. It does not come easy or early for them but when they do realise that they have achieved more than what they thought they were capable of and return to thank me, that is my inspiration.

SPORTS & FITNESS 45 SWIMMING:

SWIMMING SECTION REPORT

by Rebecca Turley

It’s hard to believe that we are already speeding ahead through 2018. 2017 was a very successful year for the Swimming Section as we continue to grow. Team Spirit is very strong and the year ended with many events to celebrate this. The Masters held their Annual Christmas party, I think it’s success can be judged by the lack of swimmers in the pool the following morning at Masters Training! The Barracudas held two events, the first was the ‘Fun Relay’ night held in the pool, this was brilliant fun and there was lots of laughter around the pool. One of the highlights was the ‘The Santa Hat Relay’, The Barracudas had a very formal ‘Gala Dinner and Awards Night’ which was to celebrate and congratulate our swimmers on their achievements this year. Congratulations to all our swimmers who achieved awards. The top awards this year went to the following swimmers: Rookie of the Year; Kayra McElligot and Charles Thomas Barracuda of the Year; Colette Whelan and Dylan Turton The current Captains, Beth and Jade, passed on the role to our new Captains for 2018 Jessie Thomas and Jude Thomas, Good Luck Jessie and Jude.

BCFC FOOTBALL ARTICLE

By Paul Hackett

As we ushered out another successful BCFC footballing year, we took the time to celebrate and reflect of the year that was 2017! On Saturday 2nd December saw the British Club football section (BCFC) hold their annual awards black tie dinner in the Elizabethan Suite. Convenor Paul Hackett and Jim Rowan were our entertaining hosts for the night. Players were ribbed for various mishaps on and off the pitch throughout the year and toasts were raised for a number of stalwarts who have returned home to the UK this year including James Morris, Paul Tynan, Alan Jope, Paul Tucker, Jamie Stone, Rob Rickard and John Rennie. For the awards, BCFC’s rapid young striker Josh Brimblecombe deservedly scooped both 1st team player of the year and BCFC top goal scorer. Jason Edwards won 2nd team player of the year and will be sorely missed when he heads back home to Australia shortly. Vets player of the year went to the tenacious Darryl Smith, goalkeeper of the year to the flying salmon Javier Koh, young player of the year to the very skilful young Angus Turnbull, best new player to the rock in centre defence Andy Donnelly and players’ player of the year went to our big hold up man Steve Hodge. The coveted Andrew Marshall award for service to the football section both on and off the pitch was awarded to Jim Rowan. Paddy Flynn got a brief mention in the speeches but didn’t win anything. Another highlight of the evening was a poem written by Cath Challoner recited by a number of the wives called “Wags on Tour”. This was brilliant. By this stage the awards, prizes and speeches were over, the live band started up and it didn’t take many tunes to get the dance floor packed out. The drinks were flowing and continued to do so in the Windsor Arms well into the early hours. Many thanks to all of those who helped organise and especially to Hodgey and the BC team for sorting out such a great evening. We are always looking to increase our squad and bench strength, if you want to part of the BCFC then please drop us a note!

BCFC – North vs South – Floating Platform • Mon, 11 Dec Christmas will always be the priority as we near the end of another year, as will the New year’s resolution so oft made, but broken, normally within weeks [or less if you are Paddy] but there is one calendar date that the BCFC boys always hold sacred and that is the North v’s South battle! A long established battle that was Grant Hall’s Agincourt became James Morris’s Bolton v’s Blackburn and has seen the North steadily increase the dominance over the all too soft Southerners over the recent years. With the North being up 8-5 the battles lines were drawn and the South selected 9 first team players, a team with an average age of less than 30 and so the North suited up for what would be a ‘blood and guts’ affair that would determine the bragging rights for at least a couple of Saturdays at Scores! Paddy Flynn led out the South, desperate for a win and looking for a blend of the best and youngest players in the Club, clearly taking it seriously! The Northerners arrived late and with a selection of ferrets and pigeons & a couple of stouts in hand, looking forward to a proper night out! The intensity of the game was heightened due to the Aussie stalwart Jason Edwards playing what would be his last game for the BC, so the South started with Javier in goal, a fluid back four that went between Andrew M, Andy D, Dan S, Jeremy HS, John W, Mike T, Rich and Paddy, but only when it was free kick, goal kick or just a kick! The midfield was packed with pace and energy – Arjun [even his hair looked racy!] Chris C, Louis M, Mark & Mike Hughes, Nikhil these were supported by the less pacey and less energetic being Wilkes, Paddy, Dougie and Paul Mac! The North, no recognised goalkeeper, but instead went for the next best thing, young, tall and athletic – or at least that’s what Tim Risbridger’s profile said, you can only imagine the Southerners delight! In front of him, was an “experienced” back four of Kenny C, Lindsay, Jan,Nick C, Paul H, David M, & Al Tan, with a midfield of Darryl, Dan C, Eslam, Callum [Son of Jim] – the North don’t use surnames! Alan T, Alex [Son of Paul], told you! & up top Gary and Angus brought a mixture of some and no hair to the line up! The game was as interesting as the ‘banter’ on the side-lines, but

despite southerner’s bravado, it was the North who took an early and well deserved lead. A goal from Gary, off the shin, beat Javier and game on! Nikhil scores the equaliser, pace and youth proving too much for the North! Andy D then sets up Nikhil with a second and the Northerners are trailing. Kenny then goes on a mazy run, beats one, then another, and a right foot finish sees the game all square. The northerners on top, Turnbull’s linking up well, Angus in the box, Jeremy shows the true Southern colours and blatantly hacks down the young man, almost killing his ferret! Penalty! Angus steps up, converts – game on. Unfortunately Nikhil liked the match ball, so another run at pace and a strike that sees David Maud lose complete control of his arms and we are all level! Final Score a very good 3-3! So onto penalties!! No need to dwell on this – South win, due to an Andy Donnelly penalty despite the best efforts of Alan T. A solid keeping display by Javier who saved two penalties! A lot of contenders for the MOM – some very notable first timers, included Dan Challoner, Mark Hughes and Callum Rowan all put in big shifts as did Eslam, Jeremy and Louis Mowle [Dougie – thankfully the fruit does at times, fall far from the tree!] For the North Angus Turnbull was the unanimous winner and for the South it was between Patrick and Nikhil, with Nikhil winning as he scored 3 and turned up! Goal of the game went to our very own “Dobby” who surprised himself and everyone else as he scored a cracking goal! 8-6 All to play for – a great evening as always guys, roll on next December! Best of luck to the Edwards family as they head back to Australia.

48 SPORTS & FITNESS SQUASH:

ALL YOUR 2017 CHAMPIONS By The Boaster You will be reading this with Chinese New Year festivities in full swing, but The Boaster is writing with a turkey sandwich and mince pie by his side, enjoying the final few days of 2017 and thinking back over a fantastic year for the BC Squash section. There were great triumphs for some individuals, and some great successes for the section as a whole.

Open plate finalists - Jim and Nick Open Finalists Charlie and Simon

Charlie Thomas, of course, won the club championship, beating Simon Bird in the final – Simon fought well but Charlie did what Charlie does. The plate was won by Jim Mitchell who beat Nick Fell in that decider. Charlie also, of course, won the handicap knock-out, completing a familiar double (as well as his usual squash/tennis championship twosome). He beat new member Neil Frith in a thrilling final, losing the first game but, as is his habit, winning the last one. With Charlie, the excitement is normally based on how he is going to win, not if he is going to win. The Handicap plate was taken by Ben Kiggell, beating Anurag Mathur in that match. One thing Charlie can’t win (by virtue of a tactical increase in the entry threshold) is the veterans’ KO, for those 47 and over (the average age of our active players is over 50!). The 2017 final, between Jamie Salamon and Neil Frith, will be played in 2018 as a result of an (agerelated) injury.

Grand Masters older than Yoda

Andrew Marshall beat Keith Carpenter in both the veterans’ plate final and the Grand Masters final. The Grand Masters featured 3 men of 60 or over (and an aggregate age of 190, or about the same as Yoda), who played a round-robin (certainly not a spring chicken) and then a final. The year’s last set of prizes were the Conveners’ Awards, which were awarded to Liam Douglas (Most Improved Player), James Pickles (Most Competitive Player), and Damien Glendinning (Good Fellowship Award). SPORTS & FITNESS 49 So much for individual excellence. What about the BC teams? We had mixed results in our inter-club mega-fixtures and the SSRA league, but came into form for the Cosmo league, leading the competition for several weeks before being pushed down to third in the final round. All was not lost, though, as at the Cosmo banquet, Ben, Andrew M and Craig dominated the other clubs in the beer drinking race to bring home some generous liquid prizes. And now on to 2018. The section is fortunate that Andrew Vine and Craig Telmer have agreed to serve as co-conveners for another year. We are all very grateful for their commitment and enthusiasm, and with them leading the way we look forward to another successful and sociable year.
