MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT For this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to feature Member David Pugh. David is the General Manager of The Fry Group’s Singapore office and is a board member of The British Chamber of Commerce Singapore. In 2011, he won the prestigious Young Professional of the Year award at the annual British Chamber of Commerce Singapore’s Business Awards. In this exclusive interview, he shares with us some insights into both his professional and personal lives in Singapore and The British Club.
What attracted you to the Club… The Club is a great place to bring the kids for a change of scenery and a bit of fun on a weekend. The location is ideal for us as we live in the Bukit Timah area and we have many friends who are members as well which makes it work well for us socially.
What you love most about the Club… The location and setting is probably what I enjoy most - it feels like a million miles away from the city, surrounded by so much vegetation and wildlife which makes it a great place to relax and unwind. On a recent visit we were lucky enough to see a Flying Fox hanging in the trees, how great is that? Sarah and I have recently started swimming lessons with Roland on a Monday morning which I really enjoy, Roland is a great swim coach and it makes for a fantastic way to start my working week.
What is the best way to spend a day at the Club with your family? I really enjoy spending an hour or two at the pool with my son, Leo. I love the Mountbatten Restaurant for client dinners, the service is great and the food is of excellent quality and the Mountbatten Wine Events are not to be missed.
How many years have you been living in Singapore… After 10 years in London we fancied a change and moved to South East Asia. We have been in Singapore now since 2009, where I came to develop The Fry Group operation in the region. I am proud of the growth we have achieved over the past few years and to be recognised as the Financial Adviser of choice for British Expats in Singapore.
What I like best about Singapore is… Being in Singapore allows me time to spend doing the good stuff in life - less time commuting, more time with family and friends. The climate really helps make it easy to spend lots of time outdoors getting plenty of exercise.
My hobbies… I enjoy exercising, especially running and recently ran the New York marathon and raised lots of money for charity, which gives me a great sense of achievement. We have not been travelling recently as much as we have previously or would like, as is the nature with a young family but with both my son Leo and baby daughter Juno growing fast, our plan is to take full advantage of Singapore’s location and see as much of this fabulous region as possible.
As a Financial Planner professional, what insights or advice can you give to help our expat Members manage better financially? As a Financial Adviser, I strongly believe that practising openness and transparency is key to success. Since moving to Asia, I have sadly seen lots of unscrupulous and commission-hungry salesmen motivated by their own greed, their employer’s greed or both. It makes good business sense to have loyal and happy customers and I am proud of the advice we at The Fry Group give and the transparent basis on which we offer it.

It’s about being transparent By David Pugh
I want to address the subject of transparency in the financial advisory industry in Singapore, what it means to me and why it is important.
Is transparency on the agenda?
Financial Advisers who practice transparency will always provide accurate information to clients when they make recommendations and give advice. This is vital to enable the client to make an informed decision and crucial to building an open and honest working relationship. It should be mandatory to confirm a product’s and investment’s cost, how much commission is paid to the adviser and lock-in periods, for example. In an era of transparency and unbundled charges, opaque charging structures for advice and investment products should not be accepted.
Of course ‘’adviser’’ is just a word, not a profession backed by a universal set of standards for training, transparency and ethics. Pretty much anyone can call themselves an adviser after passing a few simple exams. In this job, I’ve met lots of smart, diligent and highly effective people who use financial planning processes to assess an individual’s or family’s needs and then develop an effective investing approach. Most of them I encountered while I was working in the UK for ten years. Since moving to Asia, I’ve sadly seen many unscrupulous and commission-hungry salesmen motivated by their own greed, their employers greed or both. Transparency is certainly not on most of their agendas.
What transparency really means
Raising the standards
Transparency means full disclosure. Advisers who practice transparency do not withhold any information that could impact a client’s decision. This of course includes the amount of commission received by the adviser.
It’s a sad state of affairs when regulation has to be introduced into an industry to improve professionalism. This is exactly what has been happening to the financial adviser sector in Singapore, as it did in the UK. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) first developed the Financial Advisory Industry Review (FAIR) in 2012, aimed at raising professional standards as well as increasing competitiveness for investment and insurance products. I welcome FAIR and the changes it brings. However, legislation can only take us so far. What we also need is a major culture shift where advisers put the needs of their clients first. Transparency is key to this happening. It makes good business sense to have loyal and happy customers, to be proud of the advice you give and the transparent basis on which you provide it.
Only high-quality advisers practice full transparency. Lower quality advisers will practice partial transparency or non-transparency. Advisers who practice partial transparency tend to only provide information that helps them sell financial products. For example, they highlight past investment returns and extra allocation rates but neglect to disclose charges, commissions and exit penalties. As a result of this partial disclosure, clients have no idea what information is being deliberately withheld. Even worse are those advisers who provide no transparency at all. Instead, they use slick sales techniques to deceptively sell financial products. Unfortunately with such massive commissions continuing to be paid to ‘advisers’, these sales techniques are not likely to abate anytime soon.

SPECIAL FEATURE
7GR during troop inspection in Burma during WWII
A GWT Welfare Pensioner at home in Nepal
Gurkha soldier on operations in Afghanistan
200 years of history Britain’s alliance with the Gurkhas was, ironically, born in battle. The Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814-1816 pitted the British East India Company against the fighting men of the Himalayan foothills as they sought to expand their Asian frontiers. The conflict ended not just in relative stalemate, but with an abiding sense of mutual respect and admiration between the two forces. Gurkha soldiers first fought on the British side in 1815 and following the war were able to serve under contract in the East India Company Army. Thus began Britain’s relationship with Nepal, our ‘oldest ally’ in Asia. For the past 200 years, Gurkhas have loyally served with British forces in almost every major conflict. Most notably, more than 200,000 fought in the two World Wars where they suffered over 40,000 casualties, gaining renown for their courage and resilience. Indeed, Gurkha regiments have accumulated 26 Victoria Crosses for their acts of supreme valour. On return from his tour in Afghanistan, where he served alongside the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles, HRH Prince Harry said that there was “no safer place” than by the side of a Gurkha. Today, the Gurkhas form a versatile part of the modern British Army. Since Indian Independence in 1947, India has continued to recruit into her own Gurkha Regiments. There is also a Gurkha Contingent which serves as part of the Singapore Police Force.
The Bicentenary of Gurkha service to the Crown 2015 marks the greatest milestone in Gurkha history, underlining their credentials as being among the finest soldiers in the world. In honour of this momentous occasion and in support of Gurkha veterans in need, various commemorative events are planned for the year. Two of the most significant are: 30 April 2015 – The Brigade of Gurkhas Memorial Service – Representatives from each Gurkha Regiment will march down the Mall to the Gurkha Statue near Horse Guards for a commemorative service. 09 June 2015 – The Gurkha 200 Pageant at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, London – A celebration of 200 years of service with performances by hundreds of serving Gurkhas and their families, in aid of The Gurkha Welfare Trust. A range of other activities will take place over the year. In true Gurkha fashion, serving soldiers will also undertake ambitious expeditions in the Arctic as well as on Everest. Visit www.gurkha200.co.uk for further details on all events.
The Gurkha Welfare Trust The Gurkha Welfare Trust was established in 1969, its mission to relieve hardship and distress among Gurkha veterans who faced destitution on their return to Nepal. Today, the Trust has an extensive network in the Gurkha homeland. The mainstay of its work is providing a Welfare Pension to those who are ineligible for the British Army pension. It delivers medical aid to all ex-servicemen as well as drinking water and school projects in Gurkha communities. In 2015, the Trust is launching a Bicentenary Appeal: “Our Duty of Care” to raise funds for enhancements to its Medical Scheme, specifically supporting vulnerable and isolated elderly veterans. Visit www.gwt.org.uk for further information on the Trust’s work.

YU SHENG @ VERANDAH CAFÉ AND WINDSOR ARMS 1 to 5 March Yusheng (also spelt Yu Sheng) meaning “raw fish” is a Chinese New Year dish, served traditionally on the seventh day of Chinese New Year. It is a salad dish made of thin slices of raw fish and various spices, mixed with tossing actions by diners. A play on Chinese homonyms links the ingredients and tossing actions to prosperity and longevity, all adding to the good wishes for the new year. The ingredients are mixed by pushing them toward the centre, an encouragement to push on the good luck of all at the table. We have interpreted the significance of each ingredient for you: Raw Fish Pomelo or Lime Pepper Oil Peanuts Sesame Seeds Crackers
symbolising abundance and excess through the year symbolising adding luck and auspicious value symbolising in the hope of attracting more money and valuables symbolising encouraging money to flow in from all directions symbolising a household filled with gold and silver symbolising a flourishing business symbolising the whole floor would be filled with gold
Small: $29.80+ per order (serves 2 to 4) Large: $49.80+ per order (serves 8 to 10) Take-away is available from the Windsor Shop.

ITALIAN WINE & GOURMET DINNER WITH GUEST CHEF SILVIO MORELLI Friday, 27 February
Born in Pisa, a little town in the centre of Tuscany, Italy, Chef Silvio’s interest in cooking developed since a very young age. His mother was the key reason behind his interest, as she would cook Italian cuisine for the family with him as her trusted assistant. Graduated with a Dipolma in Hotellerie Restauration, Chef Silvio’s first career milestone is without a doubt, his experience as Chef de Partie at ‘Auberbe du pont de Collonges’ with Paul Bocuse, a 3 Michelin Star Restaurant in Lyon, France for nearly 2 years. He continued his training under the mentorship of Chef Michel Guerard at his 3 Michelin Star Restaurant, Les Pres d’Eugenie in France where he worked for 5 years as Sous Chef. Chef Silvio decided to move to Singapore in early 2011 to bring his flair and creativity to Asia after having worked in Martinique, a small island in the Antilles in the eastern Caribbean Sea for 15 years. He is currently the Executive Chef and owner of Trattoria Gallo D’oro Ristorante. We are happy to have Chef Silvio Morelli as our Guest Chef for a night only in the Mountbatten Room. He will prepare an exquisite menu to pair off with some of the great Italian wines.

Bellingham has a history that can be traced back to 1693 when the land was granted to one of the original French Huguenot families that settled in the Franschhoek Valley of the Cape winelands. Through the centuries, Bellingham has produced wines under the hand of many visionary and talented proprietors, but none so dynamic and respected as Bernard Podlashuk, who is regarded as the great patriarch and founder of the world class Bellingham wine brand of today. Bellingham’s Bernard Series of wines honours the memory of the man known fondly a Pod, who is responsible for many South African ‘firsts’ in wine, including the first dry white blend, the first Rose and the first Shiraz single variety released in the Cape. The winemaking team is driven by his inspired passion, emotion and innovation in order to create fascinating modern wines of interest to the ever-changing consumer palate. Bellingham’s winemaking philosophy is one of minimal intervention. Time-honoured methods are combined with measured modern technological expertise, with a particular emphasis on mouth-feel and intensity of fruit. This makes their wines daringly unique and extraordinarily appealing.

A PI LOT ’S WATCH SH O U L D EN D U R E E VERY T H I N G T H E PI LOT DO E S . The Bremont MBIII is not like other pilot’s watches. It’s built in collaboration with British firm Martin-Baker, the pioneers of the ejection seat. At their test centre, the MBIII is strapped to the wrist of a crash-test dummy and shot out of the cockpit. Enduring forces of between 12G and 30G in the process. Then a vibration test simulates 30 years of continuous flying. But this doesn’t mean the MBIII is built for endurance at the expense of performance. It’s a beautifully-engineered mechanical chronometer with GMT functionality, certified 99.998% accurate by COSC, the official Swiss testing institute.

Time to get back into shape!
By Aaron Tay
As we approach another season of feasting end of this month (Chinese New Year!), I am writing this article to help all readers to burn those weight gained and get back into shape by exercising! I know, getting started is not easy, so here are some tips to help you to beat the festive flab.
• Keep a fitness journal
• Visualise
A fitness journal can help to bring your exercise routine back on track when you are struggling to stay motivated as it will show you how far you have improved from the very first day, therefore a great motivational tool to keep you going.
If you think you can’t, you will never be able to make it through those final repetitions of exercise. Mental strength plays a key to success. Visualise yourself achieving your goals will keep you on your fitness routine and help to achieve positive results.
• Commit yourself Get moving and just do it! Take up workout classes or book yourself a trainer, make sure you commit these classes to your calendar so that they are viewed as actual appointments and so you are less likely to find excuses to cancel it.
• Find the fun in it Exercising should be a fun activity and should not be viewed or feel like a torturous process. You can take great pleasure from the sense of achievement which comes out from overcoming challenges and progressing with your fitness buddy or trainer.
• Eating right Food makes up 70% of your health and fitness battle. You can make great changes just by making small adjustments to your eating habits. By eating a regular mix of proteins, good fats and carbohydrates, you will reap the benefits of your physical training routine. You will have both the energy to perform and the nutritional foundations needed for recovery. This exercise and nutrition relationship will definitely help you to achieve your goals.
• Short-term realistic goals A healthy approach to keeping the fabs away and stay motivated is to make sure your fitness goals are specific and realistic.
• There is gain without pain While exercising should be challenging enough to encourage the body to adapt and therefore improve, it should not lead to any injuries. Many people, especially those who are new to exercise, can become over enthusiastic due to the physical improvements that they experience.
• Abandon an all-or-nothing attitude Don’t think of exercise with an all-or-nothing approach. If you unexpectedly miss a session, don’t beat yourself up. Just get back on track tomorrow. Remember, exercise and fitness is a way of life, it is not a destination.
• Reward yourself Once you have hit your targets, reward yourself! By training and committing to your trainings, you’ve earned the right to reward yourself. Whether it is a new toy or fitness-related gadgets, enjoy your achievements.
For more info, please visit The British Club Gym and approach our well qualified Fitness Trainers during gym manning hours, or alternatively, you can contact the Sports And Recreation department at sports@britishclub.org.sg or call 6410 1173.

Cricket:
End of Season 2014 report By Gaurav Lakhanpal By the time you read this, the new season 2015 for BC cricket would have already started. Although a tad late but here is the 2014 season report, the AGM took place in early December and we have a change of guard in the office. New members have stepped in which is a good sign for BC cricket. This year we had much improved cricket facilities with improved grounds, better storage, shade, chairs, food and drinks and the credit goes to Paul Twine, David Bennett and Todd Buck to ensure we all turned up and played with no care for logistics.
KL Tour picture
Overall a great season where we played: 28 matches including a tour to Kuala Lumpur 14 wins or 50-50 win loss ratio We had our 2 wins in the vets league out of 5 games, first ever for BC in 3 years which saw us finish 4th We fielded 50 batsmen this year and 44 bowlers
Batting Honors: David Hosking – 387 • Gaurav Lakhanpal – 316 • Ross Marsh – 247
BC team having a few cold ones after the last home game
Bowling Honors: David Bennett – 29 • David Hosking – 18 • Paul Twine - 17
Tour Update: We had a great tour to Kuala Lumpur to end the season where BC cricket team combined with ANZA players went to play 2 games. Our first game was against their veteran’s team and Captain Todd graciously asked hosts to bat. BC with tight bowling and catching had them pin down to 97 for 4 in 21 over’s (25 over game) before the heavens opened up and the match was called off. The next day started with clear blue skies and BC/AnZA boys rolled in after a great dinner followed with a very quiet night, which saw most of us, tucked in bed by 2 AM =). The opposition team didn’t have a single player above 21, ok just 1 player who was above 35 but turned out to be ex Sri Lanka domestic player and our opposition under 21 KL team’s coach. Captain Todd insisted that we bat first and the hosts obliged. After some early blows by the Sri Lankan fast bowler, which reduced us to 28 for by 7th over, we recovered to score 136 all out in 35 overs with David Kempton in his last innings being run out for a duck without facing a ball (you didn’t want to be sitting next to him in the pavilion). After a nice meal, host team went for a chase and luckily the rain gods stayed away and we had a full game. Hosts started well and went about the chase as they knew the turf well, we were brought back in the game by some good catching, good bowling by Dennis, Cliv, Sandeep (AnZA) and Gaurav (BC) which had them down to 9 wickets in 28 over’s and only an ugly hoick by the no 11 which could have gone anywhere, but in the gap this time won them the game by 1 wicket. Great tour and great camaraderie between a mix team from 2 clubs, great hosts Royal Selangor club and great tour management by Captain Todd, social secretary Gaurav and AnZA organizer Clive Tilbrook. Finally many thanks to out going committee who have done a wonderful job this season and welcome to the new committee to carry the baton in 2015. Thanks to the members who have left us this season… Mark Sandys, Uresh, Simon Atkins, Jeral DSouza and David Kempton who have been the pillar behind the stumps for the past 5+ years and will be leaving us early 2015.

SPORT & FITNESS Golf:
GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Race to The Sarojin We have a new champion! Congratulations John Bussell on winning the 2014 Order of Merit; Race to The Sarojin. John competed in no fewer than 8 of the 12 rounds available, winning two outright and when steady golf was needed to hold off the challenge of Colin Allcard at Ria Bintan, John delivered. Kate Kemp from The Sarojin graced our dinner at Scores where John was presented with his well deserved prize; a relaxing stay at the luxurious Sarojin in Khoa Lak. Our thanks go out to Andrew and Kate for their generosity and support this year and we wish them well in the year ahead; we hope to see you both on the greens in 2015. Race to The Sarojin winner, John Bussell receives his prize from the lovely Kate Kemp of The Sarojin
December Medal
Players assembled to take on the Ria Bintan Ocean Course, one of the top courses in the region.
The last Medal of the 2014 was played at Ria Bintan on Saturday 13th December. We had hoped for a turnout large enough to disrupt the probability of our leader walking away without a challenge but alas the die was cast. Those who could make it were treated to a sunny, breezy day and lightning fast greens running 10.5 on the Stimpmeter!
Our two Order of Merit challengers, John Bussell and Colin Allcard teed off in the first of our four flights with all the pressure on Colin who needed the win. Although not a long course, narrow fairways, and hazards played their part as the strong breeze and fast greens reeked havoc on the scores. Back at the clubhouse, John had done enough to hold off the challenge of Colin, however Nic Merrow-Smith had emerged as a challenger winning the medal with 41 points. Runner-up was Daniel Germain with 32 points, pipping David Kempton (31 points) by 1 point. Nearest the pin went to Daniel Germain and to Christie David who sunk his put for a two at the difficult par 3 ninth. Longest drive went to our guest Mike Sorensen. Congratulations go to Nic Merrow-Smith for a sterling round in difficult conditions.
Stunning views and challenging shots like this approach to the 3rd hole, appear throughout the round.
Matching shirts, well I never. David kindly explains to his caddy the penalty system for misread putts and poor club selection.
Convener’s advantage; those once in a lifetime shots get caught on film. Nic stands by his approach to the 388m par 4 14th green.
Our Order of Merit challengers John Bussell and Colin Allcard accompanied by Krishna Kumar and David Kempton THE BRITISH CLUB
So back to that Order of Merit. After a check of the season’s accumulated points, it transpired that John had sneaked the Order of Merit and the Race to The Sarojin by the narrowest of margins, a 1/2 point.
