PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Happy New Year - may I take this opportunity to wish everyone health, happiness and prosperity in 2014!

MAIN COMMITTEE Steve Settle President

Shaun Matheson

I am very pleased and honoured to continue serving the Members as President of the Club for another term. Thank you to all Members who attended the Club’s 31st Annual General Meeting held in November last year. The Main Committee and their portfolios are now confirmed (see page 5). I would like to welcome Andrew Moore to the Main Committee and wish him well as he heads the Food & Beverage Committee. I would also like to thank Marianne Paisley for her tireless contributions to the Club during her tenure as a Committee Member and Chairman of Activities & Events. We will miss her greatly and her absence will be felt amongst the Members and employees. In recognition of her many years of contribution and loyalty to the Club, the Main Committee has awarded Marianne a Life Membership. We look forward to her visiting us soon from the UK and seeing her name on the Life Members Board. A big thank you to everyone for their generous support of the Club’s adopted charities in December. Because of your heart-warming gifts and donations, you have helped to make a difference in the lives of those supported by the Gurkha Welfare Trust and Riding for the Disabled Association Singapore. I would also like to extend a thanks to all who supported our Typhoon Haiyaan Charity appeal and gave so generously. There will be a Burns Supper on Friday, 24 January. Join us to honour Robert Burns and experience a flavourful Scottish-themed buffet dinner and entertainment at the Windsor Arms led by our very own Barry Woolhead. This year, the Chinese New Year falls in late January. It will be another occasion to celebrate and enjoy the multi-cultural ambience at the Club. As we usher in the Year of the Horse, the Club will offer Chinese New Year food promotions at the Verandah Café and Windsor Arms. Make sure you try out the Yu Sheng (Raw Fish Salad), a perfect dish to mark the start of the Chinese New Year!

GM’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Welcome to 2014 which ushers in the year of the Horse, here’s to good health and success in the coming year! On behalf of the entire team, we thank you for your support during the festive period – it was great to see so many Members and Guests coming to the various events and enjoying themselves. Most events were fully booked and have grown from strength to strength over the last few years. May I also thank all Members who had donated generously to the Hong Bao (Red Packet) Fund for our Club employees. Your appreciation of our employees will surely make their day and show how much their hard work is appreciated. To celebrate Chinese New Year, there are several food promotions at the various restaurants. On the first and second day of the two-day holiday there will also be activities and entertainment for the whole family, so be sure to join in. The very popular lion dance performance will be held on 1 February at 11.25am at the Club Lobby, so don’t miss it. The Club has introduced great Gift Vouchers, which come in denominations of $50 and $100 and are available at the Windsor Shop and Pro Shop. They are the perfect gift idea for your loved ones and can be used across the retail shops and F&B outlets at the Club. On Friday, 24 January, we have Ms Brigitte Bouchayer from Craggy Range Wine Estate to share with us some of the estate’s amazing wines from New Zealand. Make sure you book yourself in for this dinner as I am sure the places are filling up fast. As you may be aware from 1 November 2013, our Members enjoy exclusively discounted tickets to the attractions at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). These have been hugely popular, especially over the Christmas holidays. RWS is also putting on a spectacular show called LightSeeker from now till March 2014, an original musical featuring stars from London’s West End and songs by award-winning songwriter Dick Lee. It is a great show for the entire family. Do enquire with Reception if you wish to purchase these tickets. You would have heard by now that the Club will be hosting the second Best of British event from 6 to 14 June. This major event will be open to all Members and Guests. If your company would like to partner us through this event, please contact us at 6410 1111 or email marketing@britishclub.org.sg. We have various platforms to showcase your company through the Best of British celebrations. We hope you will take this opportunity to support the Club. A happy and prosperous Lunar New Year to all of you!

But as we’re located at the heart of the Orchard area, you’ll have Singapore’s best restaurants, shops and entertainment, right on your doorstep. And its location gives you easy access to businesses across the island. So when you stay at 8 on Claymore Serviced Residences, we’d love to see you, but we have the feeling you’ll be out.

Craggy Range

Wine & Gourmet Dinner

Friday, 24 January | 7.30pm

When Terry Peabody arrived home from a four-week business trip in the Fall of 1986, his wife Mary, and daughter Mary-Jeanne, cooked him dinner. The meal was long and leisurely, but not without purpose. Terry was not allowed to leave until he had agreed to go into the wine business. The specification was that the business must never be sold. It was to be a family business, an enduring heritage legacy. The family business expanded. Bolstered over the years by input from other singularly talented individuals, the winery – the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship. We are happy to have Ms Brigitte Bouchayer to share with us some of these delicious wines.

WINNING, LOSING AND SOMETHING IN BETWEEN By The Boaster

Another trophy for Charlie

Job well done - the Cosmo team after beating the Americans

Last month you were promised, dear reader, the results of The end of November also brings the end of this year’s the Club’s handicap knock-out tournament, and so that is COSMO interclub league. The British Club had a storming what you shall have. second half, winning 6 of their 7 fixtures (the only defeat was to eventual champions, the Dutch Club) to finish third The finalists were Peter Vohmann and quintuple reigning in the league. Our final match was a 4-1 trouncing of the champ Charlie Thomas. Many have tried and many have American Club notable both for the volume of chicken come close to beating Charlie in this competition but nowings eaten after the game and for another great win one has managed it in half a decade. Could Peter be the for Jan du Preez to extend his 2013 competition record to one? 4 wins out of 4. Carl Jackson, Andrew McCarthy, Andrew In the first game he seemed to be trying out for an episode Marshall and Neil Millar also had 100% records but with of “Are you better than an A-grader” and he stormed to fewe r matches played. The team was managed and an 11 / -1 win. Charlie was a little rattled but was clearly captained for the third year by Craig Telmer – he has done determined not to be usurped by this year’s pretender, an outstanding job over that period, making COSMO the though a 13 point start is a lot to deal with when a player highlight of the season for many of us. In 2014 he will hand like Peter is on a mission. Would Charlie’s will to win, elite over the captaincy and assume the role of convener of sk i l l s and ex pe r ience be enough? Just about, i s the the section. answer. Game 2 went to Charlie 13-11 after a 10-10 deuce and we wondered if the tide had turned. That question was answered as Charlie took the next two games with increasing margins each time, and the true mettle of a champion was clear for all to see. Cha r l ie’s name goes back on the t rophy and on the honours board. Of the last 13 Open and Handicap finals, Charlie has won 12 – the only loss was this year in the Open, and that to the professional, Zainal Abadin. Despite p rog res sive t weak s to the hand icappi ng, he rema i ns King of the courts, but it has been great to see players like Peter, Douglas Morgan, Matthew Gyde and Charles Ewart – all newcomers to our squash section this past year - challenging hard in this competition and keen to make their mark. Well done, also, to Andrew Vine for running two fantastic knock-out events this year.

The American Club know who’s boss!

Jan, Convenor for the last 3 years, will be stepping down and is owed thanks by every squash player at the club for his leadership and energy. He has left the section in a very strong position – a great culture of intense but friendly competition, an energetic committee, a busy schedule of matches and events and the respect of every Club we compete against. Thank you Jan, from us all, and keep on enjoying your squash next year and beyond. Charlie and Peter after their final

junior leagues, more social tennis play. There seems to be an insatiable demand for the four British Club courts. Just from the first 8 months of our 2014 calendar, you can see that you have plenty of opportunities to play competitive tennis through the Club. Now add the many hours of social tennis to the lessons with the Club Pros, the British Club has members of all ages who want to be active, social and simply have fun. Welcome to another year of tennis at the British Club. The Lunar New Year comes early this year so the end of the rainy season is just around the corner. Hitting the yellow ball around the court with friends and family is surely the most fun way to shed the pounds brought on by the Christmas turkey and the New Year’s bubbly.

By coming on court, you will meet all the wonderful champions who are, who were and will be. For more information about the weekly socials, lessons, team tennis and more, join the Tennis Section as a family. All you need to do is email sports@britishclub.org.sg

TENNIS SECTION AGM, 5 December 2013

By Fiona Barton

The tennis section held its annual AGM on Saturday, 5 December at the Sports Bar immediately following the Red Hat Social event. It was attended by 20 people. Members of the committee provided a review of their activities. Everyone agreed that 2013 had been an excellent year for tennis at the Club, with the number of section members increasing, now at a current record high of 212. Of particular note was the increase in popularity of the coaching. Credit was given to Kelvin for his hard work in developing programs for all levels and ages. The junior section has also seen a dramatic increase in popularity. There are now 8 teams competing in the KLM league with ages ranging from 8 to 16. Damian Hills who has been on the committee for 5 years, first as treasurer and for the last 3 years as Men’s Tennis Convenor stepped down from the committee so that he can focus his attentions as treasurer on the Main Committee. He has played an important role in building the tennis section and will be sorely missed. Joel Krueger who was previously junior convenor will take over as Men’s Convenor. Liza Rowan and Kim Das have joined the committee as junior convenors.

UK Resident or Non-Resident - are you overpaying tax?

By Martin Rimmer

The new UK Statutory Residence Test is in force and provides a framework for determining UK residency for tax purposes. Make no mistake - all Britons, no matter where in the world, are impacted to some extent. Find out exactly where you stand.

The test determines if you are UK resident or non-resident for UK tax purposes year on year and each year is reviewed in isolation. The test is split into three broad parts:

Automatic Overseas Test evaluates your residence status based on the number of midnights spent in the UK. You are considered non-resident in any tax year that you meet one of the following conditions: 1) You spend less than 46 midnights in the UK (16 if you have been UK resident in one of the last three tax years) or 2) You meet the conditions to qualify for ‘Full Time Working Abroad’. Automatic Residence Test considers you resident in any year in which you: spend at least 183 midnights in the UK, your only home is in the UK or, you meet the conditions to qualify for ‘Full Time Work in the UK’. The tax status of any Briton living or working abroad that meet none of the conditions of the first two parts of the test will be determined based on the third and final part. Sufficient Ties Test works on the principle that the more ties you have to the UK, the more likely it will be that you are considered a UK resident for tax purposes.

While the new test creates a much greater level of certainty, it still involves some level of interpretation. It is advisable to take real care to understand both the terms used and their definitions, some are defined precisely and others are not. For example, the Automatic Residence Test places real importance on what a ‘home’ is. If you think about it, that is a very difficult word to determine precisely. Each of the questions and the meaning of the important phrases such as ‘treated as resident’ and ‘work in the UK’ should be interpreted and explained to you by a Tax professional. As well as introducing the new Statutory Residence Test, the Government has laid down conditions that need to be met in order to break or achieve residence in the UK midway through a tax year (known as split treatment). If you are planning to return to the UK, very careful advanced planning is suggested to ensure you really do benefit from the right to split a tax year into a period of non-resident and resident status. No matter what your circumstances, in order to proactively protect your tax status and avoid overpaying, look for a Tax Expert who interprets and explains details, definitions and rules individually for your case.
