PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, One of the many pleasures I’ve found of living in Singapore, where the lines between East and West are blurred, where old and new are both equally cherished and our many cultures embraced, has been the British Club. As a newcomer, it can be hard to find a sense of community outside of work or school circles and so I was drawn here as a member more than seven years ago, not because it reminded me of home, but because it offered me a new place to call home. Since then, our community here at the Club has given a lot to me, and I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to give back first as a member of the main committee and now as President. I’m following in the footsteps of Damian Hills who has served as President for the past four years and will continue as a member of the main committee. He has left a great legacy, one which I am very proud to follow and I would like to personally thank him for his leadership and contribution to the Club. It’s not only the excellent events we host here, but also the many charitable activities we undertake, of which the membership can be proud. I would like to give thanks to all of you who bought a ‘star’ and helped contribute towards the Club’s adopted charities – Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Singapore as well as the

Gurkha Welfare Trust in December. Your contribution will help make a difference to the lives of the children of RDA and the families supported by the Gurkha Welfare Trust. As we move into a new decade, the year ahead is the Year of the Rat in the Chinese calendar, which promises to be a year of renewal and change. I think this is a fitting way to describe what I would like to achieve as your President, a continuation of the great traditions and heritage of the British Club, with a view to always thinking about how we continue to grow and stay relevant to our membership. Together with my fellow Main Committee members and our General Manager Andrew Christon, I wish you all a great year ahead!

GM’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, On behalf of the management team and all of our staff, I would like to wish you and your family, a wonderful and prosperous 2020. The Club’s Annual General Meeting took place on 28 November and I am delighted to welcome our new President, Stephen Walker and two new Members to the Main Committee. The team and I look forward to working with the Main Committee to bring you an exceptional 2020. I would also like to thank all the Members who have donated generously to the Hong Bao Fund for our Club employees. Your appreciation is an affirmation of their efforts and hard work at the Club.
Come and attend the two days of festivities as we usher in the year of the rat with Chinese acrobatic performance, traditional dances, synchronised drums and not forgetting the iconic Lion Dance! Come down and experience a tradition that is enjoyed all over the world. We will continue to bring you our regular Friday Night Live commencing 3 January with music genres like jazz, pop, rock and many more. A celebratory Burns Supper (semi-buffet dinner) will be held to commemorate the life and work of Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns, Scotland’s National Poet and Lyricist. I would like to wish all members a very healthy and prosperous New Year!
It is once again that time of the year where our Singaporean counterparts celebrate Chinese New Year, one of the busiest periods on the local calendar. Not one to be left out, The British Club will be holding our own Chinese New Year celebrations ANDREW CHRISTON on 25 and 26 January 2020. General Manager

very closely with the relevant Head of Department to provide Member feedback. No specific prequalification is necessary to participate in any subcommittee, however if you do have a certain skill such as knowledge of F&B or accounting, then clear alignment to a specific subcommittee may make sense. The subcommittee provides essential guidance and focus on specific portfolios that are important to running the Club. They create avenues of dialogue and feedback which give direction to the Management of the Club and provide important guidance and input into the Main Committee. The current subcommittees open to members to participate in are: Membership, Food and Beverage, Sports, Development, IT, Finance, Marketing Communications and Activities & Events. These committees mainly meet in the evenings once a month. They last for a maximum of two hours and cover a pre-determined agenda. What is involved? You join by raising your interest to the General Manager.

If, however, you do not attend for successive meetings, you may be asked to vacate the position in favour of another member desiring to participate. There is no major preparation necessary as the management teams do the preparation and the work. activities and your opinion will count towards what is wanted and how it’s to be provided. You become an ambassador for the Club to other members so that you can share your views and other members’ views with the committee. You get to know many new aspects and members. Committees always provide food and refreshment during the meetings as a small sign of appreciation for the extra time you sacrifice towards the Club’s governance. The time you spend in an active role is entirely up to each member. You can sit on multiple sections of interest or subcommittees but as a principle, the Club tries to limit it to one subcommittee per member to allow as many members as possible to become involved in the Club’s governance. Main Committee (MC) Once you have served on a subcommittee for at least one full year, you can consider becoming a candidate for election to the Main Committee (MC). Those interested should contact the Chair of the subcommittee, a MC member, the General Manager or the President directly. The next step would be a short discussion with multiple MC members to better understand the commitment and to get guidance about the process for election. MC members are elected at the AGM. Members of MC participate in up to 10 Main Committee monthly meetings each year lasting between 2 to 3 hours. In addition, most MC members will also chair a subcommittee meeting each month for at least 8 to 9 months in each year. As a MC member, there may be ad hoc matters that may demand your time at short notice.
As an MC member you are expected to formulate views and opinions on many aspects of the Club’s operations. All MC meetings are well prepared in advance with agendas and documentation made available by the Management for pre-reading to all MC members. You are expected to be aware of the agenda and come prepared. Most MC members are also a Chairperson of a subcommittee. (Subcommittees work closely with the Heads of Departments to set the monthly agendas at the meetings.) As a member of MC, there is clearly a bigger scope of work. However, this work is also very rewarding in that you get unique insights into the functioning of the Club and some of its very special characteristics. Many items require balance as not all wishes can be made reality and committee members are expected to understand the strategy and support decisions that have been reached at MC meetings. MC members can also be called on to make short speeches or say words of welcome or thanks at relevant functions and events. Each MC member acts as an ambassador representing the Club to external parties, existing members and new members. I hope this gives a good overview of how members can volunteer their time to get more involved in the Club. If you have questions or need further clarification, don’t hesitate to speak to the General Manager, or any MC member.

the level of savings needed to provide for a comfortable retirement. In short, it offered a fairly formulaic picture of a minimum, moderate and comfortable income and what this offered in the way of a lifestyle. Despite these fairly generic brackets it’s clear that the most pressing issue is to consider just how you want your retirement to look, and put in place sensible steps to help ensure dreams can become reality.
PLANNING FOR RETIREMENT: THE MISSING MILLION By Huw Wedlock
When helping clients with retirement planning, we are often asked how much should be saved. The answer is dependent on many things – not least age, earnings, health, lifestyle and more. It’s no surprise that many people don’t consider retirement planning until their later years, and then find that there is not enough set aside to support a desired lifestyle. Planning so that you can enjoy today, whilst making sure there is plenty saved for tomorrow, can feel daunting. Yet it’s worth noting that our retirement years need to be properly financed, not least because we are all living longer. The number of centenarians in the UK has increased by 85% over the last 15 years (source: ons.gov.uk), and the impact on pensions and savings is significant, notably because many people will still want to retire at the ‘expected’ retirement age of 65. Attitudes may shift slightly as the UK state pension age is extended, but longer life expectancy will certainly impact any planning. As a result, it’s more important than ever to ensure you have the right savings provision to cover your (hopefully lengthy) retirement years.
advice@thefrygroup.sg. www.thefrygroup.sg Tel: +65 6225 0825
A new study by Loughborough University, commissioned by the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (Developing Retirement Living Standards, October 2019), was recently published to help highlight
When it comes to planning ahead we find it useful to work on the premise of a £1 million retirement pot. Although this figure may feel like an incredible amount, saving it is certainly achievable. If you are in your twenties, saving £500 a month with a 5% return would offer a savings pot of £1m by the time you are 60. General guidance can be a useful starting point. One of the most commonly cited is to set aside half of your age: so if you start at age 30 it could be 15 per cent of your income, whereas if you start at 40 it is 20 per cent. Yet the stark truth is that today £1 million is probably not enough. And if you are living, working or planning to retire overseas, there are additional complexities to consider including currency, taxes and a lack of access to common or occupational pensions schemes to name a few. It’s also likely you’ll have a personal view on where you want to live longterm which will help determine any immigration and other implications. Ultimately you will have your own ‘magic number’ when it comes to providing for your retirement; one which reflects your unique circumstances, plans and lifestyle, so planning up to and beyond retirement age are both key. To discuss any aspect of saving for retirement, please do get in touch.

DO I NEED A HEALTH SCREENING? From: Dr Rebecca Daly
Dr Rebecca Daly is a UK trained GP based at IMC Katong based on family history, respiratory and cardiovascular health in a smoker, sports medicine in a keen jogger, travel health if a trip is booked or women’s health if an aunt has suffered ovarian cancer.
Why start the new year with a proper health check? January is a great time of reflection and resolutions, with a large number of us committing to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle. What better time to have a health check to reflect on current lifestyle habits, take stock of your health and plan for a healthier, happier you in the new year.
Why are health screenings important? I feel perfectly healthy! Health screenings provide an opportunity to sit down with your doctor and take the time to identify your individual risk factors for illness. Such discussions will include an assessment of your lifestyle, family history, travel plans and your personal concerns and ideas. Recommendations can be made which allow you to take better control over your health. Screening aims to seek early signs of disease before the symptoms become apparent. Early detection allows timely treatment, which leads to better outcomes than waiting until the symptoms manifest.
How do I decide which type of screening to get? With a plethora of screening tests on offer, it can become overwhelming, and knowing where to start could be confusing. At International Medical Clinic, we do not believe in a one size fits all philosophy when it comes to health screening. We offer a more bespoke service, personalised to your needs. Investigations should be tailored depending on your medical history, conditions that occur in your family, potential travel plans and current lifestyle. For example, there might be a need to focus on diabetes risk
14 |
JAN 2020
It is important to not see screening as a one off check. Screening will only pick up signs of disease at that particular time and risk factors can change with age. Incorporating an annual health check into your lifestyle will best help optimise your long term health.
Is it ‘more tests the better’ when it comes to health screenings? Investigations should only be considered based on the best medical evidence available. The tests offered should be reliable and the disease should be of significant concern. There should be a benefit of finding the disease, such as effective treatment available or suggestions of preventive measures you can take to deter illness. Investigations should be arranged with care. There is a concern of over diagnosis whereby a test finds an abnormality that would never have caused symptoms or harm over the person’s lifetime. This results in further unnecessary investigations and can cause undue anxiety to the individual. Some tests also pose a risk of radiation and should only be done when the potential benefit outweighs this risk. Screening should incorporate a thorough discussion of the potential pros and cons of investigations, as well as your concerns, preferences and risk profile. This allows you to make an informed choice regarding which tests are suitable for you.
Is health screening just for physical health or can it assist my mental health? Mental and physical health go hand in hand. Chronic disease causes a higher rate of depression. Depression and other mental health issues can increase your cardiovascular risk and have an adverse effect on your eating and exercise habits.
yet there is still a prevailing social stigma surrounding the topic. A lot of work is being done to normalise the conversation around mental health and yet some people still struggle to seek the help they need. Some people may not appreciate they are suffering from stress or burnout until they sit back and take stock of their lifestyle. A health screening can be a good opportunity to identify any feelings of low mood, anxiety, stress or insomnia, which may need ongoing support and follow up.
What age should people start getting an annual health screen? Annual health screenings that are customised to your age should start at 18 years old. At this age, seeing your doctor may not be the top of your priorities and chances are you feel absolutely fine in your 20s, but it is beneficial to start good habits to keep yourself healthy in the future. Ensuring pap smears are up to date, checking blood pressure and BMI, mole checks, vaccine updates and sexual health screens are just some of the areas that might be addressed. With advancing age, there are more tests routinely offered, such as considering breast cancer screening from 40, prostate cancer risk assessment from 45, colonoscopy for bowel cancer from 50, to name just a few.
If someone is unsure where to start, what would you recommend? The best place to start is to book a consultation with your doctor. After a thorough discussion of your current health and risk factors for future illnesses, together you can plan a Health Screening suitable for your needs at your current stage of life. Take charge of your health this year, and start off the year with a personalised annual health screening.

EVENT AND PARTY CATERING – WE CATER FOR EVERY OCCASION
ST. PATRICK’S SOCIETY OF SINGAPORE St. Patrick’s Society and its members have been regular guests to The British Club for a number of years and have recently celebrated both their Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Treetops Terrace and Children’s Christmas Party at the Elizabeth Suite.
AGM The AGM was supported by the Irish Ambassador to Singapore, Patrick Bourne, who is also the Patron of the Society. Young Irish dancers from Irish Inspirational Dance and music by Gerry Cox provided the entertainment for the night.
CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY What a fabulous way to kick-start the Christmas celebrations! 56 super excited kids got to meet Santa Claus. The kids had to free Santa, who got kidnapped by polar bears, and save Christmas. Entertainment provided by Evolve Arts.

The annual black-tie event honours the rich history and culture in our Celtic roots as well as raise significant funds for charity. Guests will enjoy a pre-dinner champagne reception, some lively music alongside performance by young Irish dancers in Singapore. A perfect balance of oak and sweetness. Lemon zest, toffee apple – and a whiff of coconut. The signature sherry wood brings intensity and richness, while the first-fill bourbon casks add fresh notes of citrus and vanilla.
The depth and sweetness of dried fruit. Complex depths and bright tropical notes – with a spicy oak finish. Hints of candied lemon and pineapple reveal the influences of first-fill bourbon casks, balanced by the rich intensity of our signature sherry wood.
Fresh, malt and spicy. Spicy vanilla fruit, ripe apples and a rich, luxurious mouthfeel. This is the result of eighteen long years and a generous proportion of first-fill sherry casks.

International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Coaches Conference 2019 Bangkok – Maximising the Players’ Journey By Matt Rawbone
Recently, The British Club’s Tennis Head Coach, Iverson Barros, attended the ITF Worldwide Coach Conference at the Berkeley Hotel in Bangkok. This World renowned conference was attended by more than 600 coaches from 113 different countries and this was the first time that the conference, which is held every 2 years, was hosted in Asia. The conference brought together leading international experts in coach education, player performance and sport science to present on the latest developments in these fields through practical on-court coaching presentations as well as lecture room presentations that Iverson has brought back to the British Club for the benefit of all the members.
This year’s event featured two-time Grand Slam winner, Mary Pierce, former triple Grand Slam Doubles Champion, Owner and Coach of one of the most prestigious Tennis Academys in the world (SanchezCasal Academy) Emilio Sanchez, Craig O’Shanassey - statistician and tactician for Novak Djokovic and many more. “I had the chance to learn a lot with these great names in the Tennis World in many different areas of the Sport. Those are the names who had Grand Slam titles as players and coaches. It was a great learning experience to watch them on court passing all that information to us so that we can maximise your tennis journey. On top of this great learning opportunity, there also was a great chance to exchange Tennis information and experiences with the other coaches from all over the world during the 3-day Conference. An amazing opportunity to develop and learn from the best for coach Iverson with so many takeaways and new knowledge gained (that has already been seen on the courts at The British Club) and now being shared with The British Club Coaches Team and the Members every day. Grab a chance to enhance your game with Iverson and the other coaches at the Club’s tennis courts now with either a private, semi-private or group lessons today.

SQUASH:
This Month is All About Foreshadowing By Craig Telmer
Our Squash writers went a little M.I.A. (missing in action) the past few months. We jump back into the magazine this month with thrilling questions . . . that will only be answered next month. Question #1 Can ANYBODY stop the handicap tournament 11 consecutive year champion Sir Charlie Thomas, from winning a dozen?
Question #2 Have Cosmo (or Cosmos) captains Ben K and Omair A ignited a massive late Cosmo charge to avoid The British Club winning their first ever Cosmo Wooden Spoon?
Question #3 Our lady squashers, currently playing socially on Thursday nights, arranged a friendly against the Singapore Cricket Club. Who won?
For answers to all these questions, tune in to the magazine next month or come to our friendly drop-in squash socials on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights at 7pm or Saturday afternoons at 3pm.
