PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, My thanks to all the Members who took the time to attend and contribute to the 33rd Annual General Meeting held in November last year. When quorum was achieved and the meeting was underway, it became a forum for valuable feedback and exchanges of ideas. This continued long after the meeting was formally closed. I am honoured to be given the opportunity to serve you as President of The British Club and I am pleased to announce the Members of the Main Committee of the Club, as seen on the right of this message. I would like to thank all of the Main Committee for their voluntary contribution and dedication to the various committees and to ensuring the longevity and smooth operation of our Club. All committees benefit from some regeneration and any Members that have the desire and commitment to make a difference are most welcome to make themselves known to any committee Chair or to the management of the Club. On behalf of the Main Committee and the Club Management, I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Steve Settle who has stepped down as President following the last AGM, having served the maximum three year term. The Club flourished during his term, with significant improvements in many areas whether they are in our facilities, our systems, our finances or our team and all members have benefited from this. I am pleased to know that Steve will remain on the Main Committee for a while longer, where he will help with the transition and take up the role of Vice President and Chairman of the Sports Committee. A big ‘thank you’ for the generous support provided by all of you who, during December, bought a “star” and contributed towards the Club’s adopted charities – Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Singapore and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. Your generous gifts and donations will help to make a difference in the lives of the children of RDA and the Gurkha families.

Hi Sean Allow me to reiterate on the back of Brigitte’s email. A really successful night. Food superb and your staff were once again highly professional. I was the last but one to leave (poor Alex) and there wasn’t a crumb to be seen! I think next time, you need a banner or something to place behind the food tables saying something like “.. Courtesy of the British Club...” really something to be proud of. Once again, thanks for your continued support. And on your recommendation, see you at the Big 5 dinner next Friday! PLANNING FOR YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION By David Pugh, Director of The Fry Group, Singapore
David Pugh has been living and working in South East Asia for four years and is responsible for The Fry Group’s activities in the region. David specialises in inheritance tax strategy, pension planning and portfolio management. He is a regular contributor of financial scenario articles for the Financial Times, an Associate of the Institute of Financial Planning and a Board Member of the British Chamber of Commerce, Singapore.
For many expats, their child’s education is the most important investment they will ever make. Singapore offers some of the best international schools anywhere in terms of exam results, facilities, the experiences and friendships that the pupils carry with them throughout their lives. But the cost of an education is going up and as more and more expats rely on local packages it soon adds up. At The Fry Group, this is becoming a bigger issue for our clients so we recently commissioned the Centre for Business Economic Research to look at the cost of an international education in several Asian markets compared to the UK. Their research showed that over the last five years, fees in Singapore have increased by 23.2%. There are good reasons for this of course. Many international schools are embarking on substantial capital investment. If fees continue to go up as expected, the average total amount for education for a child entering education today will be S$590,000 in tuition fees alone. This figure compares to S$479,100 for those students who started reception in 2010 and makes the Lion City the most expensive in dollar terms of all of the South-East Asian markets researched. Put into perspective the average two child expat family will not see much change from S$1.2 million during their children’s schooling. Singapore is not alone in seeing above inflation rises in school fees. In fact, they’ve gone up significantly across the board. In the UK, school fees are 30% higher than in Singapore and have experienced a very similar rise over the last five years. Globally school fees for private education are going up. A lot. We surveyed other popular expat work destinations like Hong Kong - which came third in the rankings - Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. Malaysia had the least expensive fees of the countries we examined. Annual tuition fees were an average of S$22,045, compared to Singapore, where average fees stands today at S$30,000. Hong Kong comes in at S$29,042. So what does all this mean for expats on a local package? Well first the good news. While it is the most expensive Asian destination for school fees, Singapore ranked high in ‘affordability’ of education too reflecting the higher average salaries in the little red dot. Only Singapore’s regional rival Hong Kong scored more highly on the school affordability stakes. Secondly, the real cost of a UK education also needs to be taken into account. Regardless of the headline dollar amount, Singapore with its favourable tax regime has significant advantages. Once you factor in boarding fees and the high quality of schools on our doorstep, a UK education becomes less attractive. The key to carry away is that for expats the high cost of international education needs to be planned alongside other life events such as university education, retirement, life insurance and wills & trusts. At The Fry Group, we help clients come up with a specific financial plan to provide them with visibility on how decisions they make in the present can impact on their future.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Member in the spotlight For this issue of Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to present Mr Daniel Khoo. Daniel has joined the Club in February 2015. He is currently Bentley Motors’s Director of Operations. In this issue, Daniel will share with us his passion for automobiles as well as snippets of his personal life.
You have an interesting job as the Director of Operations in Bentley Motors. Please share with us some insights in your line of work – what are the interesting things you get to see/do through your line of work? The job I have is challenging but fun, tiring and motivating, all in the same breath. The area I cover, the APAC region, can be described as covering the most heterogeneous piece of geography in the world. Luckily I speak many of the dialects and languages and understand much of the cultures in this region. Bentleys are sought after in many of the APAC countries as symbols of wealth, reward for hard work, success and the ultimate pinnacle in luxury motoring. My job is to ensure that all our customers get their hands on the Bentley of their dreams, delivering an unforgettable Bentley experience through our partners in all the countries in this region. In this role, I get to meet partners, dealers, customers, brand ambassadors, royalty, rich and wealthy and influencers from all streams of life. It is through the meeting of people that I enjoy my job very much.

How long have you been in the automobile industry? What brought you to the industry? I have been in the industry for twenty years, working in dealerships, at factories and in regional representative offices. In all, for my career, I have lived in Australia, China, Germany, Taiwan and Singapore. I had joined the industry out of a passion for cars. I have seen cars assembled in different environments, from rudimentary assemblies in Thailand, Indonesia and even in Taiwan, to the robotic manufacturing behemoths of China and Germany and now to the bespoke and artisanal methodology for Bentley motor cars in Crewe. I have loved every facet of this industry and I am grateful for the opportunity it has given to my family as well as for me to be back in Singapore and to be part of The British Club as a Member. What brings you to the Club? The reputation of the management of The British Club was a key factor in our decision to join. We were referred to the club by the American Club China’s General Manager in Taipei. He knew we enjoyed hanging out in the club and we are introduced by our daughter’s schoolmate’s parents, the Schellerer family. When I am not working, you will probably catch me… I enjoy using the numerous sporting facilities provided at the Club - swimming, squash and the gym. That’s what my family does at the club on weekends and sometimes also on weekdays. Which is your favourite restaurant at the Club and why? Our favourite eating outlet is at the Verandah Cafe or the Splash Bar where after a swim or some exercise, a curry lunch or a sandwich are both just as fulfilling and yummy.

SPANISH WINE & GOURMET DINNER Friday, 29 January 2016
$98.00+ Member • $108.00+ Guest This month, we will explore the world of Spanish wines. Spain is the top exporter of wines in the world. In 2014, Spain exported 22.8 million hectolitres with the majority of it going to France. It became the third largest producer of wine in 2014, behind France and Italy respectively with 42 million hectolitres produced. While everyone thinks of Rioja when they think of Spanish wine, the top area for volume is actually Castille-La Mancha near the capital of Madrid. We are happy to have Ms Alison Harvey with us this month to share with us more on Spanish wines. Alison is the manager for South East Asia and Hong Kong for Freixenet Group who owns Katnook Estate in Coonawarra.

SPIRIT PROMOTION January The Macallan Edition No. 1 Single Malt Scotch Whisky The Macallan Edition No. 1 is the first of a new, limited edition series to be released annually, for which a unique selection of oak casks will be identified to yield a new Macallan expression. Natural honey in colour. On the nose, orange, apple and dried fruit notes highlight a vibrant and rich aroma. Vanilla, toffee and chocolate underlay oak overtones. The palate is meandering, warming, wood spices; takes time to open up and reveal nutmeg, cinnamon, hints of dried ginger and toffee. The fruit appears later – fresh and balanced with fresh oak.

For the past few months, Members had to make do with alternative arrangements due to the extensive renovations and changing of the old gym equipment. The British Club Gym has been closed to replace the floorings and vinyl walls. Air-conditioners have been changed to provide better cooling facilities for our Members. We also took the opportunity to replace and repair light fixtures with energy saving LED lights. Most importantly, all the Stack Weight Machines, Free Weights and Cardio Machines have been changed to the most updated series. With all the changes, we also added a few more machines to enhance the training capabilities of the gym. We are now equipped with a Smith Machine, Power Rack, Half Rack and Dumbbells ranging from 1kg to 30kg. 14 stack weight stations that you can use to train almost every part of your body. Try out the brand new Jungle 5, one of the latest multi-cable machines, and 14 of the latest series Cardiovascular Machines which consist of 5 Treadmills, 4 Bikes (2 Recline Bikes), 2 Elliptical Machines, 1 Vario Cross Trainer, 1 Crossover and a Concept 2 Rower with PM5. Apart from the Concept 2 Rower, all the other cardio machines have a touch screen and runs on the latest Android version that offers you the same gesture-based interaction that you would enjoy with a tablet. You may now enjoy watching TV, surfing the web and Youtube etc. This gives the user access to a constantly evolving world of applications. You can also use your iPhone or iPod to listen to your favorite music or connect your USB device while you work out. The white Stack Weight Machines with red seats and white finishes, the red vinyl walls and the blue towels, are aligned with the 3 colors of the United Kingdom Flag that gives you the unmistakable feeling of home in the UK.
Our Football Covenor, James Morris was so excited about the new gym equipment that he went up the treadmill with champagne in his hand!

NEW YEAR, OLD STORY By The Boaster
2015 Most Improved
2015 Open Finalists
As the Boaster casts an eye back over 2015, he is struck by how familiar it all looks. There are new aches and pains, there are a couple of new faces on the courts and a few old faces have gone but so much is the same. Craig Telmer, who has done a brilliant job as convenor for the last two years, is back in charge. Charlie Thomas, 6-time club champion is back on the honours board and is now 7-time champion after a 3-0 win over Ben Carpenter in the finals. And then there is the Cosmo league. Once again we began the season full of hope, started well and even led the league at one point, only to slip down to 5th in the final standings. Our final match, when we still had a chance of a top 3 finish, was at home to the Dutch Club. To pass on the Dutchies on the Right Hand Side and make our Sweet Dreams come True, Captain Jamie went back to the ‘80s. Choosing a team recognized for their athleticism and Reflex-flex-flexes he picked Jim ‘Eye of the Tiger’ Mitchell, James ‘Jump’ Bauly, Andrew ‘I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar’ Marshall, Andrew ‘Manic Monday’ Stearns, and Liam ‘Rock the Casbah’ Douglas For the battle of Two Tribes and to bring home Gold. Andrew was first up and he had a Fantastic Day, winning 3-0. Andrew Stearns started well but quickly found himself Under Pressure and lost 3-1. Up stepped Jim who was as Physical as ever and left the Dutch Livin’ on a Prayer as Another One Bit The Dust. At this stage, The British Club team were Walking On Sunshine and knew that some good Karma (chameleon) was coming their way after weeks of close defeats Time after Time. Surely Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, they thought. Liam had tough game and lost, leaving James playing the decider. He went 1-0 up, then 2-0 and then disaster struck as he went over on his ankle. He fought bravely and almost came Back To Life in the final game but with limited mobility he was taken down by the Dutchman’s Invisible Touch and it was another Blue Monday for The British Club. Don’t Stop Believing and we’ll see you in 2016.

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Section News On behalf of the Section, I’d like to thank you all for supporting our 2015 inter-club matches, Club Championship and in particular our regular monthly medals. Participation was marginally up from the year before and with our fixture list for 2016 confirmed, we encourage even greater participation as we kick off the season with two great venues in Seletar Country Club and Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club. Our 2015 Order of Merit comes to a close in December at Ria Bintan, with Nic Merrow-Smith leading from John Bussell (retired) and Paul Nikkel. Being convenor, Nic has been there to pick-up points when the field is at it’s weakest. As in the past, the Order of Merit rewards those who play more games, partially through constant scoring. For example, the Stableford scoring averages for those who have played more than 5 games this year are; Paul Nikkel 33.00, John Bussell 30.63, Nic Merrow-Smith 30.44, David Christie 27.57 and Daniel Merrow-Smith 19.40, many of whom featured in the challenge for the year-end Honors.

SPORTS & FITNESS Cricket:
Cricket Section Report By Paul McNee As we head into the monsoon season/Christmas period, The British Club Cricket Section season for 2015 is coming to an end. It has been a very successful season with new members joining the Cricket section as well as a number of keen cricketers being introduced to and joining the club. At the time of writing, we have one game to go to finish the season (The British Club vs ANZA on 28 November).
Match Summaries The British Club vs Cargill This game is played annually for the Jeral D’Souza Cup (Jeral was a Cargill employee and founding member of The British Club (BC) Cricket Section). Not much to say about this game other than it was an Ian Botham 1981 Headingly/Old Trafford like performance by the BC’s Kiwi All-rounder Gary Smith that decided the day! Gary bowled 4 overs of impressive medium pace taking 4/18 and sending another Cargill batsman to the hospital with an unfortunate cut to his head. Cargill succumbed to be all out for 119 with another Gary (Swinfield) 1/9 off 4 and Gaurav Lakhanpal 2/2 off 1 backing up Smith magnificently. With only 120 to chase for a win, BC made the run chase a bit more difficult than it should have been, slumping to 6/60 with only David Bennett (21 off 29) putting up any real resistance. In came the bowling hero Smith and he clubbed a quick 27 off 25 balls to take the BC to a well-deserved 3 wicket victory. Captain for the day Shane Sampson happily accepted the trophy on behalf of the BC and a few celebratory drinks were consumed. The British Club vs UWC Teachers The British Club (BC) won the toss and elected to bowl first in clear sunshine (a nice change).UWC were off to a slow start with opening bowlers, Paul Twine and David Bennett keeping it tight. Twiney was heard to offer $10 and a free beer to anyone who would drop a catch off Benno’s bowling given the two of them are separated by only one wicket at the top of the BC Season Bowling Award. Rob Scott clearly thought that was an offer too good to ignore and dropped UWC’s Parker the next over! The UWC innings never really got going and they struggled to be all out for 179 with Bennett (2/20 off 4), Twine (1/15 off 4) and Gibson (1/12 off 4) the pick of the BC bowlers. Paul McNee and Rob Scott both bowled tightly with no luck. If it was not for Ross Marsh (0/24 off 2 overs) bowling a series of very generous full tosses towards the end of the innings UWC’s total would have looked even less impressive. BC were feeling very confident when it came for them to bat and this confidence proved to be well founded as openers, Xav Stucki (31* off 33) and Ross Marsh (30* off 29) hammered the luckless UWC bowlers to all parts of the ground. Paul McNee (35* off 32) and Todd Buck (24 off 23) followed in their footsteps as BC rushed to 1/138 with the target of 180 looking a mere formality. I am not sure what happened next. Over-confidence perhaps? Some concern that the UWC teachers may give bad school reports to children of BC players? Whatever it was, the BC went about snatching Defeat from the Jaws of victory as they crawled their way to 7/170, falling 9 runs short, with the 3 retirees all still in the shed. Post McNee retiring with a huge 6 over long on, only 25 runs were scored off the last 6 overs! Back to the drawing board it was for the BC with some extra homework courtesy of the teachers!

Competitive action from our Junior players… Edited by Julia Fenton
Junior Tennis Tournament and KLM Groups – cause for celebration!
The end of 2015 saw some excellent performances from some of our younger Club players. Liza Rowan and Kim Das, at the helm of the Junior Tennis group, were both excited to report a tremendously successful Youth Tournament completed over 2 weekends in November; huge thanks and gratitude to all those who participated or helped organise the event. The prize-giving was included with the seasonal KLM awards night on December 4th, where Tennis Director Darren gave a great update on plans for youth tennis during 2016. Well done to all those who competed and to the winners: Under 8 (Boys & Girls) Under 10 (Boys) Under 10 (Girls) Under 12 (Boys) Under 10 (Girls) Under 14 (Boys) Under 16 (Boys)

Men’s Tennis - a choice of options Don’t forget that Men’s Social is active Monday evenings from 7pm. There is a good group of half a dozen players who regularly attend. Doubles is primarily played along with some singles if courts and numbers permit. Every first Monday of the month includes a free drink on the section. Men’s hitting group happens every Saturday at 4pm and every other Wednesday at 8pm. Contact Darren who can assess interested players. Men’s boxes are occurring regularly with groups of 4 men to play in a round robin format over the course of several weeks. We are looking for more players so don’t hesitate to come forward and join us!
THE BRITISH CLUB
Also to be commended are our KLM Under 17B team, who came third in the Autumn season, despite the hazed-off matches. Team leader Vari Gibson was pleased to give her warm congratulations to valiant team members: Jonathon Harrison, Hamish Gibson, Glen Tan, Alistair Snowden, Lion Schellerer, Joe Morris, Fraser Gibson, Matteo Cecamore and Louise Gibson.

Coaches Top Tips This month Head Coach Darren Moore shares some inspirational (and weather related!) tips from one of the most successful tennis coaches of all time; Nick Bollettieri who has coached many successful players including Andrea Agassi, Maria Sharapova , Serena & Venus Williams, Boris Becker and Monica Seles. A more experienced player controls their end of the court and understands the shots they can and cannot play. They analyse your game in the warm up and first initial games, then make subtle adjustments to affect your game. Next month, walk onto the court knowing your strengths, the type of style that can help you play well and start to analyse your opponent and look for the following; •
When serving into the sun, change your ball placement; toss forward and backwards not side to side
•
When looking into the sun and your opponent lobs you, let the ball bounce first, you will hit a better smash.
•
Try a little lower toss on your serve if it’s really windy.
•
When running forward for a very short ball, don’t hold the racquet with both hands, run like a sprinter pumping your arms.
Major Wits Win – the only way is up! Club Wits A team, Swing Out Sisters won the A Division and are now on their way up to the Premier B division; what a superb end to a fantastic season.
Pamper yourself with our Luminous IICII & II SeaII facial treatment, (A radical facial treatment for dull and dehydrated skin) and enjoy a complimentary 30min back massage to melts away all the stress and tightness on your back, shoulders and neck.

SPORTS & FITNESS SWIMMING:
Section Report By Susan Finlay
As the Barracudas start the New Year with enthusiasm, we reflect on our achievements of 2015 and set some new goals for the New Year. Last year our swimmers did their best to keep in peak racing conditions throughout the haze, their dedication is to be commended. In our masters group, for the past 2 years, they have competed in the Singapore Masters meet, which is held annually for swimmers from other countries as well as from other clubs in Singapore. The Barracuda Masters now have 6 record holders and a total of 13 records all together! Our junior swimmers continue to excel in competition and enjoy competition days. Many of our swimmers have been happy with not just winning medals but also breaking personal best timings. Swim meets are always a fun and rewarding day out for all of our swimmers and their families. This year we hope to encourage all our swimmers to train hard, to continue to challenge themselves not just on competition days but in training as this is how we improve. Our coaches are always there to give sound technical advice, encouragement and to make the sessions rewarding. Masters swimmers will be training hard towards not just Singapore Masters meet, where they look to break more records, but other events on the world calendar, such as open water swimming events. We always welcome new swimmers of any age and any ability so please contact swimming@britishclub.org.sg for details if you would like to join The British Club Barracudas.
