STATE OF THE HEART

LEARNING FOR THE NEXT

GENERATION Introducing Stamford American International School’s new campus for early learners. Pioneer Class Aug 2017. The world is changing. Education is changing. Today, how people learn is as important as what they learn. And that’s the inspiration behind our extraordinary new Early Learning Campus. It’s been built entirely for little learners aged 18 months to 6 years. The new campus offers young children a first class early learning environment in which to explore their natural inclination to create, design, engineer and innovate. Our unique ‘state of the heart’ curriculum incorporates the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme, with new units of inquiry for science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and innovation. Come and see for yourself the difference this purpose-built environment can make to your child’s vital pre-school years. 2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE

Dear Members, I want to convey my thanks to all Members who took the time to attend and contribute to the 34th Annual General Meeting held on 17th November last year. It was encouraging to see both old and new Members participate in this important event and I hope we see more of you at the next AGM. On the right-hand side of this page, you will find the Members of the Club’s Main Committee. I am honoured to once again be given the opportunity to serve as President and I would like to thank all members of the Main Committee and the Sub-Committees for their voluntary contribution toward the advancement of our Club. Another round of thanks is in order for the generous support provided by all of you who, during December, bought a ‘star’ and helped contribute towards the Club’s adopted charities – Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Singapore and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. Your generous giving will help make a difference to the lives of the children of RDA and the families supported by the Gurkha Welfare Trust. The Club will promote even more exciting activities and events throughout this calendar year and we very much hope that there will be something to grab the attention of every Member. Look out for our Best of British 2017 celebrations, which promise to be even bigger and more exciting as we celebrate our 5th anniversary. Don’t forget that your friends are always welcome as guests at our events and around the Club. Together with my fellow Main Committee members and our General Manager, Sean Boyle, I wish you all a great year ahead! DAMIAN R. HILLS President

GM’S MESSAGE 3 CLUB MANAGEMENT

Dear Members, A very Warm Welcome and a Happy New Year to one and all! I hope 2017 has been treating you well thus far. First and foremost, I would like to welcome back our Club President, Damian Hills. It was an absolute pleasure being able to work with him and the Main Committee last year and I am looking forward to even greater things to transpire for this coming year. This year is definitely one of gratitude, as I would like to thank all the Members who have generously donated to the Hong Bao Fund for our Club staff. Your contribution to this effort will serve to affirm the staff’s efforts and hard work at the Club. Back by popular demand, we have also relaunched our Friday and Saturday Night Live for a brand new season at the Windsor Arms commencing 13 January. In line with this exciting news, be sure to come down to the Windsor Arms on Friday, 20 January as we commemorate the life and times of Scottish poet Robert Burns with a flavourful Scottish-themed buffet, bringing back The Wherries for another round of fabulous entertainment and of course some whisky tasting on the evening. It is once again that time of the year where our Singaporean counterparts celebrate Chinese New Year, one of the busiest periods on the local calendar. Not one to be left out, The British Club will be holding our own Chinese New Year celebrations on 28 and 29 January. Come and attend the two days of festivities as we usher in the year of the rooster with Chinese acrobatic performances, traditional dances, synchronised drums and not forgetting the iconic Lion Dance! Come down and experience a tradition that is enjoyed the world over. Let us start off the New Year on a good note. Onwards and upwards! SEAN BOYLE General Manager

THE FRY GROUP’S NEW YEAR FINANCIAL CHECKLIST As we plan our resolutions for the year ahead now is as good a time as any to get your finances in shape so that you can enjoy life as an expat in Singapore. Here is a toast to 2017 and The Fry Group’s GYST (Get Your Stuff Together) New Year resolutions financial check-list for British Expats:

1) Renew your acquaintance with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs

To paraphrase Robbie Burns horribly, this is one old acquaintance you can’t forget if you ever plan to return to the UK or if you have assets there. Check you are up to date with your taxes, you’re residence status is correct, and make sure your address and contact details are up to date. Have you claimed all the relevant refunds and allowances? A clean bill-of health with HMRC can save a huge New Year’s hangover at a later date.

2) Make sure you have an up to date will

Nobody likes to think about the worst happening and being an expat can throw up additional complications and considerations. It is sensible to consider drawing up a will in all jurisdictions where you hold significant assets. Consider having a power of attorney which will allow financial decisions to be made in the event that you or a loved one are incapacitated for any reason.

3) Check your life cover and protection

It’s worth reviewing your needs, your current protection level and what alternative cover is available in today’s market. Do you have enough cover for critical illness or loss of income?

4) UK property

With over 14 changes in the taxation of UK property in the last 5 years, it is worth checking which apply to you. For example, do you have a 6th April 2015 valuation for your UK residential property? Have you made an election for Principal Private Residence and are you recording the time spent in your UK property? Is your mortgage fit for purpose?

5) Review your financial goals

Make sure your investments still reflect your goals and attitude to risk. Whether you want to be mortgage free in 10 years or retire in 5, you’re more inclined to stick to a plan if you have specific goals. Analysing your assets, liabilities, income and expenditure can help you to control your financial future to ensure that you stay on track and achieve your financial and lifestyle vision.

6) Be tax efficient with your investment strategy

Make sure you integrate tax planning into your overall investment planning to ensure assets, liabilities and income are structured in the most optimal and tax efficient way.

7) Review your pension provisions

If like many others you are planning to live out your retirement somewhere other than the UK, do you understand each type of pension you have and have you reviewed the options available with them? It would be prudent planning to review all the options with your UK pensions, especially if you plan to retire outside of the UK.

8) Running your own business

If your top New Year’s resolution is to strike out on your own business venture make sure that you plan your finances appropriately. Considerations include what will happen to the company if you decide to return to the UK, making sure you have appropriate insurance and for more established entities looking to expand; perhaps into the UK market.

Whatever the New Year brings, all of us at The Fry Group wish you a prosperous and exciting 2017.

“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan

LUNAR NEW YEAR DAYS

On Saturday, 28 January the Lunar New Year of the Rooster will be ushered in with much gaiety, noise and colour, with family festivities being paramount. Family reunion dinners on New Year’s Eve are much anticipated events, with dining tables laden with auspicious food and drinks. Celebrations continue for 15 days, with various activities keeping the festive mood high throughout. On the first and second days, visits are made to relatives and friends, though the third day is considered inauspicious believing that quarrels may erupt. The first ten days of the Lunar New Year are tied to various aspects of harvest thanksgiving, with the first day for the chicken, followed on subsequent days by the dog, pig, sheep, cow and horse. The seventh day is joyfully celebrated as Everybody’s Birthday, with rice and other grains next, then a day for heaven and finally for earth. On the seventh day (Friday, 3 February this year) the ritual of tossing and eating yu sheng is traditionally enjoyed by many people. Using chopsticks, the numerous ingredients of this raw fish salad are mixed with great gusto by all present to the happy shouts of “Lo Hei” meaning ‘to raise up wealth’. Festivities continue up to the 15 night, on Saturday, 11 February, which is known as Chap Goh Mei or Lantern Festival, when another family feast brings the Lunar New Year celebrations to a close. “Gong Xi Fa Cai!” (‘A wish for prosperity’.) MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 15

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are proud to present to you Miles Wilson and his family. Miles joined the Club in November 2016. He is currently the Senior Director of Coca Cola Far East Pte Ltd. In this exclusive interview, Miles shares with us some insights into the Club and his family life.

1) What brought you to The British Club?

I was born and raised in London before emigrating to Sydney when I was 16, so I carry both passports. After 8 years of living in HK and Shanghai before coming to Singapore in March we decided to go for more space and chose to live in a house, which we love. However, that means we don’t have all the facilities and family interaction that we would get living in a condo hence looking to join a club which gives us all that and more.

2) What has impressed you most about the Club thus far?

We love the unique and tropical location set on top of a hill looking over Singapore, an aspect you don’t often see. The facilities are fantastic but most of all we love the family feel to the Club. The facilities, events and social nature truly lends itself to families of all ages. But perhaps the best part is the shop in the lobby that sells the best of British treats!

3) Can you share with us an interesting little known fact about Coca Cola?

Coca-Cola operates in 207 countries around the world and sells 1.9billion servings per day.

4) Name a few local food haunts that you frequent.

Picotin at Bukit Timah driving range - great atmosphere for a casual family dinner. Atlas Cafe on the corner of Bukit Timah & Duke’s Road

for a great brunch or Coastes on Sentosa for breakfast on the beach while the kids play in the sand.

5) What keeps you occupied when you are not at work?

Chasing my kids around! My wife and I have always been into exercise so we’ve joined a bootcamp group which keeps us active every

Tuesday and Saturday morning. In fact my wife enjoys it so much she’s decided to become a trainer. And like many of us who descend

from England if there is a cricket game to watch I’ll be there.

The Balvenie Whisky Tasting 6.30pm to 10.30pm The Balvenie is a unique range of single malts created by David Stewart, The Balvenie Malt Master. Each has its own unique taste, but each is rich, luxuriously smooth and under pinned by the distinctively honeyed character of The Balvenie. The exceptional quality of The Balvenie is attributed to the unique craftsmanship retained by The Balvenie Distillery. Nowhere else will you find a distillery that still grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional floor maltings, employs a team of coopers to tend its casks, a coopersmith to maintain its stills and has in its service the most experienced Malt Master in Scotland.

Tempus Two Silver Series Shiraz, Australia @ $34.90 PER BOTTLE

Juicy, lively and smooth. This instantly appealing Pinot Gris shows ripe peach, mandarin and pear aromas with a hint of floral on the nose. The palate is nicely rounded with attractive fruit flavours, leading to a refreshing finish.

A concentrated and complex wine with dark chocolate, liquorice and spice aromas and flavours accentuated by nutty oak from barrel maturation. Full-bodied yet supple with velvety tannins, a perfect match with red meat, wood-fired pizza as well as a mature cheddar cheese.

Domino Del Plata Crios de Susana Balbo Torrontes, San Carlos, Argentina @ $49.90 PER BOTTLE

Domino Del Plata Crios de Susana Balbo Cabernet Sauvignon, Argentina @ $49.90 PER BOTTLE

Grape Varietal: 100% Torrontes

Grape Varietals: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec

Enticing aromas that are strikingly similar to Viognier, with hints of white pear, white flowers and citrus fruit. On the palate, it has a beautiful structure and acidity along with enticing fruit flavours that keep you coming back for another sip. Plenty of body for a wine that shows such delicate aromas and flavours. Fruity, floral and yet still quite dry.

Dark reddish colour with aroma of ripe plums, freshly crushed cherries framed by light hints of sweet vanilla from the oak. In the mouth, the intense flavours of ripe red fruits mingle with red pepper notes typical of the Cabernet and lead to a long, juicy finish. Lively and well-balanced, this wine offers an amazing fruit quality and complexity on the palate.

HENDRICK’S GIN TASTING

Friday, 17 February • Windsor Arms • 6.30pm to 10.30pm Hendrick’s Gin is made in very small batches of only 450 litres at a time. The smaller the batch, the more control can be exerted by master distiller Lesley Gracie and still man Alan Rimmer. Declared the ‘Best Gin in the World’ by The Wall Street Journal, 2003. The unusual distillation process, combined with their oddly delicious set of infusions of rose petals and cucumbers yields a one-of-a-kind gin that is passionately loved by a tiny yet growing handful of individuals all over the world. Hand-made in tiny batches, their tender approach is what makes Hendrick’s so divine. As many a gin drinker has been known to say, no other gin tastes like Hendrick’s because no other gin is made like Hendrick’s. Join us this February as we put together a Hendrick’s Gin Tasting at the Windsor Arms.

SPORTS & FITNESS 49 GOLF:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS “BUNKERED OUT” By Chris Taylor Starting my Club Championship round on the Serapong Course, my first golfing visit to Sentosa, I was feeling pretty comfortable with an easy chip and putt for par. Four shots later, I walked off the green with a double bogey, having set the scene for the rest of the day. I was experiencing first hand, Singapore’s most finely laid out course, with its large undulating greens and more bunkers than I have encountered in quite a while. I allowed myself to be calmed by the spectacular views of Sentosa and the surrounding South China Sea. The iconic Lion City skyline and the dramatic proximity of the port contrast with rolling greens and surrounding nature in a defining and unique golfing experience. And unique it was - with my nerves shot from my opening hole, things only got worse. On the next, I was in the back bunker with a fried egg lie for 2, and after shovelling buckets of sand in every direction, my club championship dreams evaporated. Surely though, a bad day on the golf course is better than a good day in the office…or so I thought! I pressed on, enjoying the views and company. But my golf was utterly dismal as I spent more of the round in sand than on Serapong’s delightful fairways and greens. After handing in my scorecard, my shoulders slumped in defeat, head hanging in shame, it was back to the Club to drown my sorrows and enjoy the awesome spread of food for the prize-giving. No prizes for me, but a great afternoon and evening with a fine bunch of people. We had 26 players in total including 7 guests. Only 15 people broke 100, so a hard day for most, but nonetheless enjoyable. I’ve been assured it gets easier with each outing there, bring it on 2017! Many thanks to the organising committee for the opportunity to play the regions finest courses each month and the endless support of Lay Chi and Holly who are always there with a smile, supporting us and lending a helpful hand.

Congratulations to Simon Bird our 2017 Club Champion, shown here carassing his trophy.

NOVEMBER STABLEFORD - TANAH MERAH COUNTRY CLUB, TAMPINES COURSE

We had a really good turnout at Tanah Merah Country Club with 15 of us taking to the greens. We experienced a lovely cool morning with no threat of rain, followed by lunch and a jug of beer. It was great to see so many take time out of their busy schedules to participate in one of our monthly Stableford Competitions. Best round of the day went to John Devins of the American Club who came in with 37 points. Placings for The British Club November Stableford: Winner: Ashley Morris, 34 points Runner-up: Colin Allcard, 33 points on count back from Andrew Bond-Webster. Nearest the Pin, Hole #2: Tri Tham of the American Club Nearest the Pin, Hole #11: Steve Settle of The British Club

ORDER OF MERIT

With none of our leading players getting themselves among the points in the November Stableford, the 2016 Order of Merit will have been settled in Ria Bintan during December last year. Going into that final round, only Bill Christie was in a position to knock Nic Merrow-Smith off the top. Join us next month to learn the outcome.

UP AND COMING EVENTS

Our first outing of the year will be on Friday, 20 January. For more details about this and details of our other fixtures for 2017, please contact Wan Lay Chi at wanlaychi@britishclub.org.sg

GILI ISLANDS THREE-ISLAND SWIM 18 - 20 NOVEMBER 2016 by Matthew Forrest & David Green

In the spring of this year, whilst enjoying a Great British Fry Up on the Verandah Café after a tough Saturday morning swim, a few members of The British Club Masters Swimming Section decided they needed a challenge, and the Gili Islands Three-Island Swim was conceived. The Gili Islands are three islands off the North West coast of Lombok in Indonesia. From west to east, there is Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. The islands are easily reached by speed boat from Lombok and are very popular holiday destinations, particularly for diving and snorkelling in the beautiful clear water. The target of the three-island swim was to swim around one island on each of 3 consecutive days. Plotting on Google Earth we estimated the swims to be about 8km (Trawangan), 6km (Meno), and 7km (Air). To achieve this we considered we needed some extra training! Fortunately, Masters’ coaches Enrico and Dawn were on hand to step up our distances in the pool and give those undertaking the challenge an optional training programme. In addition, we started swimming at Tanjong Beach on some Sundays, which was also a good chance to acclimatise us with open water swimming. Two weeks before the challenge, we also entered the Swim Expo Asia open water event off the east coast of Singapore. This was a team event, measured on the total distance swum by each team. There were five races totalling 8.35km. The British Club team came second overall, with a total distance of 34.55km and with three of the Gili Islands swimmers completing all five events. With this preparation we felt more comfortable that the three-island swim was within our capabilities. However, we were still apprehensive because the currents around the islands are known to be unpredictable, and sometimes strong. One of the most important safety decisions we made was to book a boat and crew to accompany us for every swim. It meant we were able to store water and snacks on board and had the opportunity to stop and hang onto the boat for a rest. Most importantly this was our cover boat as we crossed the harbours and our rescue boat if the current swept us away from the islands – not unheard of in these waters. The advance party arrived on Gili Air on Wednesday, 16 November. After an evening hydrating, we spent Thursday organizing the safety boat and logistics for the swims on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Staying at Manta Dive on Gili Air, we obtained a chart of the currents from a dive instructor and after some intense debate on the choice of starting point and direction of swim, decided to start the Gili Trawangan swim at the North-West corner of the island and swim anti-clockwise. Friday morning was a beautiful sunny day, and after the application of several layers of sun screen and a 20-minute trip in the boat, we entered the water off Gili Trawangan at about 8.00am. In spite of our planning, the current seemed to be immediately against us. However, as we swam round the north coast it came behind us and helped us down the west coast, most of the time swimming above the house reef

THE BRITISH CLUB

SPORTS & FITNESS 53 in 10 to 20 feet of water with beautiful coral, many tropical fish, and even a few turtles. The final stretch up the east coast saw the current in our face again, and this proved a tough leg, especially across the harbour mouth with a lot of boat traffic. We finished the swim after about four-and-a-half hours in the water clocking up a total of 8.5km. The Saturday swim around Gili Meno seemed easy by comparison. Running a little later, we started at about 8.30am, this time at the NorthEast corner of the island and again swimming anti-clockwise. Somehow, the current seemed to be generally in our favour the whole way round, with the coral even more spectacular especially on the north coast. We finished the 6.5km swim in a little over two hours. With two islands under our belt, we felt confident for the Sunday swim around Gili Air, notwithstanding some of us also feeling a little tired, sore, and sunburnt. The plan was the same, and again we set off around 8.30am from the North-East corner of the island at a well-known dive location known as Hans Reef. As we swam down the west coast we picked up a solo swimmer (Leo, from New York) who joined us for a while. Because we were swimming on a low tide, we were forced to swim outside the house reef to the west, which pushed us a long way west and south to round the southerly edge of the reef where we encountered some fairly big swells and breaking waves. The current was also against us for this leg, which made it tough going until we crossed the harbour and headed north for the final stretch to the finish. Thankfully, the current was then behind us and helped us complete the third island in about three hours adding 7.6km to our total distance. A brilliant trip and a great achievement covering a total of approximately 23km over the three days. We are now starting to think that we need a new challenge…

BRITISH CLUB CRICKET SECTION YEAR-END REPORT By Gaurav Lakhanpal

Last game of the season Twiney vs Marshey ended by rain

Best Bowler 2016 David Bennett

The British Club Cricket Section played the last game of the season – a friendly between Members and non-Members with Paul Twine and Ross Marsh captaining the teams as they celebrated their 50th birthday. Twiney’s 11 lost the toss and were asked to bowl. Twiney was on fire, picking up 3 wickets in his 4 over for 4 runs including the opposition captain for 1. Unfortunately this game wasn’t counted for the yearend stats, otherwise Twiney would have been joint second on the bowling honours. Marshey’s team recovered from the early blow by Twiney and ended up scoring a competitive 168 on a cloudy day. Twiney’s 11 had a cautious start but didn’t go very far as the rains came down in bucket loads and ended the game in a draw. Year-end Season stats finished as follows: Batting Honours: Todd Buck – 415 Ross Marsh – 367 David Bennett – 307 Bowling Honours: David Bennett – 20 Paul McNee – 19 Paul Twine – 16

SPORTS & FITNESS 55 SQUASH:

POETIC INSPIRATION OR, A VISION IN A DREAM By The Boaster

The Cosmo League is over, for The British Club at least. Our last two fixtures were a 3-2 win over the Cricket Club (James Bauly clinching the vital match win) and a 2-3 reverse at home to the Dutch Club (James Bauly being the hard-luck loser of the deciding match - he likes to keep it interesting!). Our final position in the league depends on the results of the last round (when we have a bye) but the loss against the boys in orange means we will slip down the table from second place and our hopes of a first top-3 finish for many years are likely to be dashed. In between the two matches, the section held its AGM when the indefatigable Craig Telmer was re-elected as convener by the kind of margin the PAP would be jealous of, and this time he will be sharing the job with Andrew Vine. Craig has done such an outstanding job that there was never any doubt that he would be supported for another year if he could be persuaded to stand. Andrew is a long-time contributor to The British Club as a whole and the squash section in particular, and we will be in very good hands for 2017. The Dutch Club match was followed by an epic end-of-season celebration at the Windsor Arms much enjoyed by all, not least The Boaster. When he woke the next morning after a night of vivid dreaming, he was immediately inspired to pick up his pen and write. Sadly he was interrupted by a man from Wheelock, but not before he had composed:

James B Grinning

On Tinggi Hill did Kubla Craig A stately pleasure-dome decree: Where Squash, the sacred game, he ran Through seasons measureless to man And downed a beer or three. So twice a week he hurtled round Twixt walls and tin with roaring sound; There were victories bright with ample thrills, With boasts and drives and manly roars; And dancing feet and dazzling skills, Before a long sojourn at Scores.

Two Conveners

But oh! That deep athletic chasm which lay By the glass wall athwart a cedar bench A sweaty place! So healthy and so hearty And e’er ready for a post-match party With ale to drink, great thirst to quench From this chasm, with constant matchplay seething, And sounds of tired, old men fast-breathing, A mighty Canuck proudly was raised For evermore by all to be praised. [Ed – apparently this kind of thing happened in 1798 too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubla_Khan] SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT
