2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE

Dear Members, I hope you all had the opportunity to visit the club over the Christmas period and that your experience at the club lived up to your expectations. I also hope that it has been a good start to 2018. I would like to thank all of you that took the time to attend the 35th Annual General Meeting held in November. It was encouraging to see a mix of established and new members participating in the process and I hope we see the same next time around. It was certainly positive to see thirteen members contesting the positions on the Main Committee this year. I warmly welcome the newly elected individuals and I look forward to their fresh energy and ideas. Members of the Main Committee and the sub-committees volunteer considerable time throughout the year and I am thankful for the commitment that every committee member makes. In particular, I thank those members stepping down from the Main Committee as between them they have made enormous contributions to the club over decades of hard work and through times of significant turbulence. Finally, I am honoured that my colleagues on the Main Committee have invited me to serve as President for the coming year. The club will always need contributions and expertise so please do not hesitate to contact me, another member of the Main Committee or the General Manager should you have an interest in being part of the governance of The British Club. Throughout 2017, we again supported the Club’s adopted charities; Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Singapore and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. On behalf of those important organisations I thank you for your support. The Ladies Craft Section has recently been raising additional funds for the Gurkha Welfare Trust, to provide accommodation for veterans. The considerable efforts of the ladies deserve our acknowledgment and backing.

As you flip through the magazine, you’ll notice pictures of the beautiful pieces of art and the poem that now grace the walls of The Windsor Arms. These works were created by Chilean artist, Eugenia Gajardo, and we had the privilege of having His Excellency, James Sinclair, Ambassador of Chile unveil them back in November. We hope that they provide a warm environment and a talking point for years to come. I wish you all the best for 2018. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

PLANNING A MOVE TO THE UK GET YOUR TAX AND FINANCES IN ORDER FIRST By David Pugh, Director, The Fry Group

As we wave farewell to 2017 and we kick-off a new year, a lot of expats will be thinking about their next move. For many this can mean preparing to head back to the UK at some stage (if not this year), and if this is the case then it is sensible to try to stay a step ahead and get a sense of the tax and financial issues involved. In the midst of packing, address changes, leaving parties and general arrangements, it is easy to overlook sensible financial planning and there is potentially a lot of tax to be saved. There are a lot of moving parts to consider. For example, you may be required to transition over a period of time into a new UK based role. If you are spending time in your UK office you may unknowingly qualify for UK residency before you actually move. In addition, moving partway through a tax year may impact tax payable on any investments you hold and plan to sell here. A good financial planner and tax adviser will be invaluable to help you navigate some of the potentially tricky tax matters. However, here are some things you should know and consider before you seek advice and make choices. Here are 5 simple considerations to help you along your way:

1. If possible, review your situation in the tax year prior to leaving and take some actions at that time.

2. Make sure you are up to date with your filing obligations to HMRC.

3. Review all your financial interests including property, accounts, life assurances, pensions and investments.

4. Identify the tax characteristics of each asset with a view to determining which should be kept, and which should be sold for maximum tax efficiency. 5. Recently HMRC has become strict on its definition of what qualifies as resident and non-resident. The Statutory Residence Test lays out the qualifications. Be sure to check how that applies to you on the HMRC website and maintain a record of your “midnights” in the UK in the tax year prior and for ideally 5 years before that. Getting the most favourable tax assessment on your total wealth can be a minefield. Sometimes the solutions are more complex but are certainly still worth a thought. Some other considerations could include: • Special care should be given to your property assets, as particular Capital Gains Tax complications can arise, for which specialist advice is usually needed. • Particular tax efficiencies can arise through the choice of vehicle through which you invest. Offshore investment bonds, foreign pension trusts, certain UK vehicles and trusts can all play an important part in delivering a higher net return after tax. • If your spouse is not British, there are particular tax planning considerations you can take into account through the use of offshore assets and holding structures. Typically, a more diversified portfolio will give you greater tax breaks. ISAs, Income Tax allowances and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) allowances can all be used to minimise your annual tax bill. In the fast changing world today, you may be required to move swiftly. If you have planned well ahead of time or at a minimum in the tax year before your return, the tax implications of your move back can be managed and controlled. Even if you’ve only recently decided that 2018 is going to be your last year in Singapore, make sure you think about these considerations. The good news is that much of this planning can be done well in advance so that if notice is short, you can be largely ‘ready to go’. Needless to say, but getting your tax planning right will make your move home go that much more smoothly.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 19

MEMBER IN THE

SPOTLIGHT

For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature Daniel Dickson and his family. Daniel joined the Club in July 2017. He is a currently a pilot at Singapore Airlines. We find out a bit more about Daniel and his exciting profession in this exclusive interview 1) How did you hear of The British Club, and what made you join the Club? We have a number of friends who have been Members of the Club for some time now and from time to time we would join them at the Club. My daughter has a lot of school friends whose families are Members at the Club also. We didn’t join earlier as we lived quite far away on the east coast. However, we recently moved to be closer to Rhea’s school TTS and decided now would be the perfect opportunity to join. The main reason was to take advantage of the great facilities, pool, gym, etc. Rhea is enjoying the swimming lessons and at some point, I want to get her started on tennis. 2) Tell us more of your work at Singapore Airlines and what you do. I fly the B747-400, also known as the Queen of the Skies. Singapore Airlines still operates this aircraft as a Cargo Aircraft. We transport some very interesting items all over the globe e.g. race horses, pharmaceuticals, giraffes, penguins, pandas, rhinos and Formula 1 race cars to name a few. It certainly is a different environment to be working in compared to regular passenger flying. We also fly to some interesting destinations all over the world including places far off the beaten track such as Anchorage and Alaska. My wife, Arti also works in the aviation sector for the Singapore Tourism Board with the Singapore Exhibition and Convention Bureau, helping to bring in events such as the Singapore Airshow. 3) Share with us all about the glitz and glamour (or not) about being a pilot. I love my job and have great passion for the aviation industry. The glitz and glamour has certainly fizzled out to some extent since the bygone era of the pioneering airlines. It is however still a very rewarding and satisfying career. Travelling the globe whilst witnessing some of the most spectacular views from the flight deck and also enjoying nice hotels to rest in. Jetlag is part and parcel of being an Airline pilot and I enjoy many sleepless nights when I’m halfway round the world. People love to ask how we cope with jetlag and quite simply, for me, I just listen to my body and sleep when I’m tired and eat when I’m hungry, Exercising regularly also helps greatly. One of the hardest things to deal with is missing my family, and it can be very hard missing key events, birthdays and anniversaries. It’s very important to have an understanding family and even more important to make up for this when I enjoy my time off in Singapore. 4) Lastly, tell us something exciting that has happened during your course of work. As mentioned earlier, I love doing my Job and as such it very rarely feels like work. For this I’m very lucky to be doing something I’m so passionate about. It was especially exciting when I flew the 747 for the first time during my initial training with Singapore Airlines. Part of the regulatory requirements when you transfer to a new aircraft type is, to do touch and go’s (multiple takeoffs and landings) with an empty aircraft (no passengers or cargo). It was a dream come true to be flying such an iconic aircraft and enjoying the magnificent flying machine it truly is. It really is a pleasure to fly!

SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT

Afternoon Tea with Books and Bubbles

Join us for the launch of Stephanie Suga Chen’s debut novel, “Travails of a Trailing Spouse” at The British Club on Wednesday, 24 January 2018. About the book: The adventure starts when Sarah's husband, Jason, is offered a position at a university in Singapore. Sarah, a successful lawyer in the US, quits her job and the couple say their farewells, put their home up on Craigslist, and, with their two children, fly off to a completely new life. Not a simplistic, straightforward novel of one-dimensional characters, Travails of a Trailing Spouse will strike a chord with anyone, expat or not, who has ever found life more complicated, puzzling, thrilling, frustrating – and, ultimately, deliciously rich – than could ever have been imagined. About the author: Stephanie Suga Chen is a former partner at a New York City-based investment fund and a proud Taiwanese-American, she grew up in Michigan and moved to Singapore in 2012 with her husband, two children and ageing cocker spaniel. Travails of a Trailing Spouse is her first novel. Join us at The British Club with Stephanie Suga Chen. There will be a book signing session, a Q&A session and you’ll also be able to get your hands on a copy at a very special price.

I started playing when I was 4 years old. Fast-track 30 years later, I am 34 and still with a belly full of passion. I enjoy reading, watching and analysing anything about Tennis.

4. What does it take to be a good tennis player?

Dedication and determination (with a lot of self-control). It is truly a tough sport where many different factors need to be considered.

5. How many hours a week would one need to train to turn pro?

Every individual works differently so I cannot speak for all. Most importantly, you got to start from young, training at least 20 hours per week. Once the body develops and strengthens, 3 hours of training will be required daily.

6. What do you love about working at The British Club?

It is indeed lovely to have access to the coolers, towels and changing rooms at such close proximity. It is satisfying for me to share my passion with like-minded Members at The British Club and trust me, they do take their Tennis very seriously here. On top of that, I meet people from all walks of life and I too learn something new from them every day.

7. What is your favourite local food?

My favourite local food will be Mee Goreng and Satay. So Sedap!

8. Single Backhand or Double Backhand? I use the single backhand. 9. Serena or Venus Williams?

Serena. I was lucky enough to cross paths with her and I even practiced several times with her. She is a fantastic person in her private life and a legend to the sport. I can’t wait for her to get back on the tour following the birth of her precious daughter, Alexis.

10. Any predictions for the upcoming Australian Open 2018?

I always go for the King - Roger Federer. However, competition has been stiff this past year with many up and coming youngsters pushing to the top. Alexander Zverev has been proving himself a lot this past year so it’s hard to say... My pick for the Ladies will be Simona Halep.

11. Who is your favourite tennis player of all time?

Without a doubt, the Swiss Maestro - Roger Federer.

SPORTS & FITNESS 51 SQUASH:

SQUASH AND MORE SQUASH By The Boaster

All eyes on the action

Why, an alert reader might ask, have the squash section included a photo of their notice board alongside the images of athletic virility that one is used to? A fair question with a happy answer – the notice board is a sign of a section in rude health. As I write, the notices show that there are no less than three competitions running within the section, and plenty more going on away from the confines of the BC squash HQ. To start with, since The Boaster’s last article, we have played two more of our interclub mega-fixtures. After a draw against the Tanglin Club, we were determined to go one better against the Cricket Club in our version of The Ashes, and against the Americans in our Ryder Cup. Unfortunately, those hopes were dashed not once but both times, with convincing defeats, but both were wonderful afternoons of squash and evenings of socialising, The Noticeboard at Squash HQ as the photos suggest. The match against the American Club was also notable for including juniors which was great news for a section facing something of a demographic timebomb. The junior star was Madison Telmer who won a great match. While those matches didn’t end in victory, the inter-club Cosmo League has seen the BC record win after win with stiring performances from up and down the squad. At the time of writing, with three rounds to play, the BC are top of the seven-club league. James Pickles, Nick Fell, Matt Gyde and Paul Nikkel have all recorded three match wins (insert comment of your choice regarding the former colonies bailing out the old country once again – only one of the four is actually British). Come back next edition for a final report. Within the Club, we are close to the end of the Veterans’ knock-out tournament and just beginning the annual handicap event where traditionally a number of the section almost beat Charlie Thomas but never quite manage it, however harshly he is handicapped. Both are being managed energetically and efficiently by Andrew Vine. In addition we have started a new round of box leagues. James Pickles was the box 1 winner last round but will have to be on top form to repeat that feat. All in all, the section is thriving with a number of new members, some old members finding a new lease of life, and all of us enjoying some excellent squash.

52 SPORTS & FITNESS SWIMMING:

SWIMMING SECTION REPORT

by David Green

For the second year running, The British Club Masters swimmers travelled to Gili Air in the Indonesian province of West Nusa Tenggara just off the north west coast of Lombok in order to complete the “3 Gili Swim”. Again, the plan was to swim around one island per day over 3 consecutive days starting on Friday 10 November. This year, we were joined by long time Masters Swimmer Neil Trayler. We decided to swim the islands in the same order as the inaugural swim in 2016. The first and largest, Gili Trawangan would be on the Friday followed by the smallest, Gili Meno, on the Saturday. Our “home” island of Gili Air would be the final swim on the Sunday before catching our flight back in the evening from Lombok’s airport at Praya. Arriving on the Wednesday allowed time for the 4-person advance party to work on the final logistics including a check on the tides and currents plus arranging the all-important safety boat - also used for our transfer to and from the islands and for carrying the food and water taken at 20 minute breaks throughout each of the swims. We had the same boat crew as 2016 and so they were a little less bemused this year by the idea of following a group of foreigners swimming around their islands. On the Thursday, Matthew and David decided on a small warm up swim of just under 3km between Gili Air and Lombok – just north of Bangsal. It was quick swim with the distance covered in just under 50 minutes. The Gili Trawangan swim began on Friday at 7am for breakfast. The advance party – Matthew, Philip, Neil and David were doing this longer and tougher swim. The breakfast ritual would also include mixing bottles of fruit juice and water for hydration and loading the boat with snacks and sun cream. After a 40 minute “commute” during which we had with a faint but fantastic view of Mount Agung in the distance with evidence of a little volcanic activity, we were in the water and swimming by 9am. Swimming all the way round an island one might think it doesn’t matter where you begin or which direction you swim but that is not the case. Currents, wind and tide are constantly changing and you need to make sure you are not left swimming against the current when you are tired towards the end of the swim. We knew roughly where we wanted to jump in and we had already decided that anti-clockwise was the right way to go; and given Matthew’s tendency to drift left on open water swims this was also a safety factor – it is a long way to Borneo. The drop in point seemed perfect and we were lucky enough to catch a current that ran for about one fifth of the island’s circumference and we covered the distance in what seemed record time. It was then we hit the strong current running clockwise and we made very slow progress on this 4.5km stretch until we reached the very southern tip of the island when we caught the current going up the east coast; as we were to discover in the next two days, this was a pattern that would be repeated for the other two islands. Swimming up the east coast of the island and through the busy Gili Trawangan harbor is potentially tricky but being the quiet season we were lucky and there were far fewer boats than we had anticipated. The remaining section of the swim was fairly uneventful. We knew we had two busy days ahead and so didn’t rush the last few kilometers - we completed Gili Trawangan in 4 hours and 38 minutes. On Saturday, our numbers were boosted with the addition of Carina, Tristan, Karen and our first junior swimmer, Neil’s son Trevor. Trevor was going to alternate between swimming and travelling in the boat. As a British Club Barracudas swimmer Trevor is familiar with training and competing in a swimming pool but was quite new to long distance open water swimming. A similar schedule – breakfast at 7, mixing our fruit juice and water, photographs of the group and loading the boat. The journey to our starting point on Gili Meno was quick and we were in the water well before 9am and again heading anti-clockwise. Our Gili Meno memory from 2016 was a supporting current all the way round which helped us finish in about 2 hours. Not so this year. The initial anti-clockwise current gave us a boost but we encountered a similar pattern in the current that slowed our progress as we approached the southern tip. Trevor joined us at intervals and accompanied by Neil managed a total of 3km– a fantastic achievement. Being the 11 of November we made a scheduled stop at 11am and bobbing around in the water held a period of silence before continuing the swim. By now we were well over half way round and completing the Gili Meno swim took only 1 more hour of swimming to complete this island in 3 hours and 13 minutes.

THE BRITISH CLUB

SPORTS & FITNESS 53 Gili Air whilst smaller than Gili Trawangan has a very shallow reef to the south west and south that for a swimmer increases the circumference significantly. Sunday, 12 November was a low tide day for most of the day so we knew we were going to be pushed all the way to the outside of the house reef. Starting on our “home” island meant we were in the water earlier at 8.40 and heading off anticlockwise. Having had a brilliant introduction to coastal swimming, Trevor used the Sunday to test out some scuba diving techniques and so we were back to 7 adult swimmers. The water this morning seemed particularly warm as we swam across the shallow reefs at times close enough to risk cutting hands on the coral. We once again battled the head-on current in the southwest corner and at one point it seemed we were in the middle of the ocean although we were really only about 1km off shore; nevertheless, we were thankful we had the safety boat close by as this part of the channel has lots of very fast boats zipping between Bali, Lombok and the Gilis. Swimming up the final stretch of island and past the sunbathers on the beach, past the locals fishing off the rocks and navigating the snorkelers floating above the house reef did feel a little surreal. We triumphantly finished the Gili Air swim in 3 hours 45 minutes. A big thanks to our coaches Enrico and Julian from Total Swimming for adapting the Masters swimming sessions to build up our distance training. A big thank you also to Jackie Green for her sports nutrition advice on fueling and hydrating both before and after these three tough swims. Gili Island swimmers: David Green (three islands) Phil Turley (three islands) Matthew Forrest (three islands) Neil Trayler (three islands) Trevor (one island – Meno) Tristan Howitt (two islands – Meno and Air) Carina Howitt (two islands – Meno and Air) Karen Kelly (two islands – Meno and Air) Video footage of the 2016 and 2017 swims are available. 54 SPORTS & FITNESS RUGBY:

CAMBODIA 10’S TOUR 2017

Building British Club Rugby One (Lego Ironman) Brick At A Time By Simon Goodman

Sunny Phnom Penh was the host for this year’s Cambodia 10s Rugby Tournament. The tournaments history spans seven years and is a charity driven event supporting grass roots rugby for disadvantaged children. The 2017 completion hosted eight Open teams, four Ladies’ teams and ten ‘Old Boys’ teams, of which the British Club was one. Playing in our third tournament, we felt in a stronger position compared to our inaugural tour to Bali in 2016. There we had travelled to the Bali 10s with just ten, and were a man-down after one match, but with an abundance of spirit and grit (and some borrowed players) secured the Vets Plate – an excellent result for our first run out. Early 2017 saw the team enter the Bangkok 10s, a big step-up in standard, with teams of ex-professional players in each pool. We fared less well, but the spirit remained undiminished. Bring on the Cambodia 10s! Luckily, news of our growing club stature had spread throughout Singapore, and being flooded with applications, we travelled with 14, a big step up from Bali, and with addition of a Tour Doctor, Dr Raj (trauma specialist and professional spectator), we felt in great shape to secure some fresh silverware for the Club. Initial pool stages started early on Saturday morning, a little too early for some (yes Billington, that means you) especially after dipping our collective toe into the cultural delights of Phnom Penh: kicking off with a cocktail at the Foreign Correspondents Club, on to the delightful surroundings of Brassac Lane, and headlong into a blur of Connect 4, vertically challenged dancing, unwanted plants, and the baked delights of hot Phnom Penh evening), and there was a genuine feeling that trophies were within our grasp as the Ref sounded the start of our first pool match against the French Asian Barbarians. It didn’t take long for reality to bite. An early warning for too many high tackles, and the realization of having to play five matches in 33 degrees in seven hours brought us down to earth. Rugby is nothing if not about spirit, however. Digging deep the game plan took shape and with a memorable dummy from Nick O’Brien, so skillfully delivered it looked to all as if he simply ‘stumbled forward’, but with a quick shimmy we had our first try, and went on to win our first match – a solid start. Following matches came and went in a flurry, all casually witnessed by Dr Raj, beer in hand, from the shady confines of our awning. Of note, and in no particular order (but starting with a classic): BC Tour virgin Kev Slack’s squandering of a sure-fire try, by attempting a subtle chip and chase (about as subtle as spinal meningitis, as it turned out), his delicate size 13 launching the ball a good 50m down field and out of the park (John Higgs’ commentary captured on mobile phone footage is an absolute classic); by contrast some sublime dummying by Section Convenor Duncan McGilligan set the field alight with a dummied kick so perfectly executed he almost fooled himself, opening up space and sending the wing on his way; Giles Krempels, the youngest-old-boy, normally our side-stepping speed demon completely outwitting the opposition, and all his teammates, by somehow fooling us into thinking he can’t run, then promptly not running, and being caught by everyone except Dr Raj (still sat with a beer in the shade); did I mention Kev’s kick?; the play of the tournament was an end-to-end try in our second match starting deep in BC territory from a line-out ball, won deftly by our nimble front five, and moved with precision though the hands of the backs, with more THE BRITISH CLUB

From L-R: Manjit Pawar, Jeremy Hebblethwaite, Simon Goodman, Duncan McGilligan, John Higgs, Pete Simmonds, Nick O’Brien, Shaun Roache, Nick Gleeson, Giles Krempels, Tim Rankin-Mills, Dave Scott, Mark Billington, Kevin Slack, absent (due to a beer run) Dr Raj Dabas

of that silky dummying from Duncan opening up the space, everyone taking the hits, recycling and maintaining possession, driving up into the oppo half, and with some fine controlled carries the ball moved down to the far touchline to a glorious score in the corner by Mark Billington, truly one for the showreel (had anyone been filming); then there was Kev’s kick; Manjit, fresh off his six week intensive fitness regime, closing in on the line with just a man to beat attempted a delicate sidestep, and was promptly outwitted by a tuft of grass, went down like a man of his size only can just feet short of the line, bravely managing to pop-up the ball to a pouncing Duncan to secure a try in the final; back to Giles (the youngest-old-boy and our Johnnie Wilko) his kicking record left a little to be desired, anything directly in front of the posts was tiptop, two feet left or right was another story all together; the Lesser-Spotted Goodman, occasionally appearing in cameo trot-outs, could mostly be seen masterfully managing the supply of water with the graceful elegance of a hugely hungover gazelle, while ensuring the side line was kept clean and visible for the Officials. For the record, and in mitigation of ‘that kick’, Kev demonstrated what is truly great about the game of Rugby. Deep into the second half against the Old Bangkok Bangers, with the British Club leading by a slender margin, the oppo broke the line and charged forward for a certain try. In the manner of the greats of the game Kev gave chase. Catching the ball carrier just shy of our try line, Kev threw himself into a tackle and held the ball up, forcing a knock-on as the oppo desperately sought to place the ball over the line – saving the try and the match. All of this effort gave us a pool ranking of played four, won three, with high hopes of challenging for the Trophy. Sadly, the points difference went against us, and we were pushed into the Shield Final. Tries from Shaun Roache and Duncan McGilligan, and surprisingly a successful conversion from Giles Krempels, led us to a comfortable win 21 – 10 against the Rahus. Our second piece of silverware in three tours! The morale victory was definitely ours, though, as on route through the pool stages we beat the eventual Trophy winners, the YARs.

SPORTS & FITNESS 55

Maintaining the Doc’s orders to keep up the intake of beer to ward off stiffness and fatigue we adjourned to the hotel for the mandatory Court Session – a touring tradition of fining those who have transgressed (that kick), cocked-up, or were only guilty of being a Tour virgin. Prosecutor in Chief Dave Scott took the team to task, dishing out the fines while being presided over by Tour Judge Hebbs (Jeremy Hebblethwaite). The finest of Fines issued being an underwater drinking task, a sight to behold (for those not found guilty of that particular offence). Into the evening the team attended the Tour party and took possession of the BC Rugby Section’s second piece of silverware in a year, Duncan proudly receiving the Old-Boys Shield. From the party and onto the delights of downtown Phnom Penh. On route Pete Simmonds, high from our victory celebrations, requested our TukTuk stop to buy cigarettes, and bizarrely was taken to a Toys-R-Us, at which he insisted he be sold a packet of Marlboro Lights. Having eventually been convinced that you can’t buy nicotine at a children’s toy shop he demanded a Lego Ironman, by way of compensation! The ensuing ride and Pete’s recounting of his conversation with the shop assistant was truly one of the funniest ten minutes of the entire weekend.

Treasurer and the Tour elder statesman, as versatile as ever, playing in various positions up and down the backline; John Higgs nimble on the wing and the highlight of the commentary for ‘that kick’; Nick Gleeson (the G is silent, no longer rogue trading), a towering figure finding his feet naturally as a convert from Aussie Rules. To a fault, a fantastic bunch of blokes. Eventually some things do have to come to an end, though. And it is with genuine sadness that we bid farewell to one of the sections founding and finest members, Tim Rankin-Mills. He is one of the few to have attended all three of the Section tours, been an invaluable and stalwart leader of the pack, and will be sadly missed when he returns with his family to New Zealand in the coming months. Goodbye and good luck, Tim. A place on tour is always open for you. Thanks finally to all at the British club who support the section, particularly Lay Chi for her organisational skills, and to Anna-Maria Nugent and all those at the KAMPUCHEA BALOPP Organisation, which aims to raise awareness and funds for youth development through rugby program for disadvantaged and disabled Cambodian children (kampuchearugby.com & facebook.com/KampucheaBalopp).

. . . . . . we are planning our next outing to the Laos 10s in February Downtown the team sequestered a quiet bar, took over the digital 2018, and are currently looking for tourists. Interested in playing rugby jukebox, and DJ Dave and his MC Kev ‘The Kick’ Slackers, played with the British Club? Please email Lay Chi at wanlaychi@britishclub. a memorable selection of tunes that had us all singing, bar dancing, org.sg or call proshop at 6410 1173. and scaring off anyone who ventured to open the door. Sunday, a rest day for the Old Boys, was a relaxed affair, with most returning to the tournament venue to watch the Open Competition and engaging in some insightful and intellectual banter on the merits of familial relationships within the North Korean leadership (they don’t get on apparently), the social benefits of chokers, and the appetites of Danny DeVito (who we met), amongst other things. It capped off a weekend that will live long, long in the memory. Great tours are always down the those who travel and the spirit they bring with them. This team bought the very best of what makes rugby such a perfect team sport, both on and off the pitch. It’s been and continues to be a pleasure to be involved with the Section. Those not mentioned above, for good or bad, deserve theirs: Shaun Roache, emerging as solid centre/wing, with a dancing and singing career in front of him should his rugby fall away, who found his love of full contact rugby this year, and is loving it; Mark Billington, Section SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT

SPORTS & FITNESS 57 CRICKET:

CRICKET SECTION REPORT By Ben Kiggell The Cricket Section has remained active over the past two months with a combination of social matches and Masters League matches We have been really pleased with the sections strength in 2017 both in terms of player numbers and our winning performances. On Saturday 21 October we played the final of the three match series against Cargill for the D’Souza Cup. The BC’s Captain Paul McNee unusually won the toss and chose to bat on a very hot afternoon. Our matches against Cargill have traditionally been very closely fought games and this was expected to be the same. BC “lent” a couple of players to Cargill as they were short and the game got underway in good spirits. Cargill got off to a solid start with both their openers retiring at the compulsory 30 run limit. Cargill lost their first wicket in the 10th over when they had already reached 61 runs. That dismissal of Tom Katsaros was due to a very sharp catch by Vaughan English after he had moved himself into a close fielding position just moments earlier. Wickets were hard to come by and the outfield was lightning fast and Cargill pushed the run rate along. At the half way mark of 15 overs they had reached 95 runs with all their batsman making runs. The heat got to the BC bowlers and the Cargill batsman opened their shoulders and made 85 runs off the last 5 overs at 17 runs per over. That took them to a very big total of 6 for 263. The pick of the bowlers for BC were Jon Allen 2/29 off 4 and Wade Pearce 2/38 off 4. The BC openers of Ross Marsh and Vaughan English found themselves facing some very tight and tidy blowing from the Cargill bowlers but pushed the score along to 22 off 4 overs before Vaughan English edged one to the keeper. Xavier Stucki joined Ross Marsh at the crease but didn’t stay long and BC found themselves at 2/24. David Bennett was promoted up the order to try and push he run rate along which he did. David got himself to 21 off 15 balls before skying a ball which saw him dismissed. Jon Allen joined Marsh and was unfortunately run out before facing a ball in a terrible mix up. At 4/56 off 9 overs Captain McNee entered the match and made a quick fire 31 off 31 with both himself and Ross Marsh retiring. Whilst BC managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over at a run a ball, the run rate crept from 8.5 to 12 an over and this was too much for the batsman to meet. Wade Pearce (35 off 29), Mark Stafford (34 off 23) and Todd Buck (21 off 21) all pushed the score along and the team finished at 200 off the 30 overs, Cargill were just too strong on the day and deserved the victory. The two teams reflected on the match at Scores over a few beers whilst watching the Rugby.
