• PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • Dear Members, Summer is upon us. In many other parts of the world the approach of summer may be indicated by a change in the weather, drier and warmer, but, as the last few months have clearly demonstrated, here in Singapore we only experience minor fluctuations in the relentless heat and rain. However, as there is a lot in store at the Club over the coming couple of months, please don’t rush to more moderate climes just yet. I will mention one very important annual event although I should declare that I have a possible conflict of interest. Don’t forget that special man this Father’s Day, Sunday, 17th June, and bring your father (or husband) to The British Club to enjoy one of three different lunch spreads at the restaurants. Fathers deserve a treat too! The General Manager and the wider team have already delivered three fantastic Best of British 2018 events and the signature series continues this month with the Commonwealth Wine Gala Dinner and Cooking Demo & Lunch with UK celebrity chef Lesley Waters. This BoB series of events would not be possible without our sponsors, who support and facilitate in many different ways and who create a financial framework around the BoB that allows the club to also raise funds for our two adopted charities: Riding for the Disabled Association and The Gurkha Welfare Trust. Across the variety of events taking place throughout the year there will be something to appeal to everyone and I encourage you all to try and attend at least one. Please flip through the magazine to find out more. I’m pleased to see that the club has received a fantastic response to the recent Royal Wedding membership promotion, with many new members being introduced by referral from existing members. Current members are our best ambassadors and the introduction of new members is fundamental to the longevity of the club in this transient environment. Do take this opportunity to refer your friends and earn up to 30,000 British Club Rewards Points as the offer has been extended until the end of June. And once more, a very warm welcome to all recent new members of The British Club. Please feel free to approach any of the Member Relations staff to learn more about the variety of activities that are held at the Club. For the month of June, we will be holding our Member’s Connect Night on the first Thursday of the month. This is open to both new and existing Members to meet and get to know the who’s who of the Club. Thereafter, as usual, we will be taking a short break during July and August and the next Member’s Connect Night will take place in September. It looks like it’s going to be a busy June. DAMIAN R. • GM’S MESSAGE • Dear Members, As many may have noticed, or attended, our Best of British celebrations are well under way after we successfully kicked off with An Evening with the Last Captain of The Royal Yacht Britannia. Faulty Towers followed on Sat, 28 Apr and it was indeed chaos as Basil, Sybil and Manuel entertained a gargantuan crowd with their theatrical presentation of a dining experience. Crowds would be an understatement to say the least for the turnout for our third BOB event – The Royal Wedding Street Party. Children had fun at Treetops lounge while parents sipped on Pimms and caught the live screening of The Royal Wedding. Furthermore, the Club also launched the Royal Wedding Membership exclusive, where Transferable Lifetime Memberships were offered at the price of $10,700 – 50% off the published price. This exclusive offer was very well received and I’m glad to inform that this has been extended till 30 Jun (we are calling it the Honeymoon period!). Members will also receive up to 30,000 British Club Reward Points for every successful referral, what are you waiting for? Next up, UK celebrity Chef Lesley Waters will be putting together not one but two special Best of British events for the month of June – the Commonwealth Wine Gala Dinner and Cooking Demo & Lunch. Lesley strongly believes in cooking with simplicity and will be showcasing just how you can do that. Seats are running out quickly so book immediately by calling 6410 1100 or email activities@britishclub.org.sg to avoid disappointment. Note: We have also arranged a supervised kid’s area for the Cooking Demo & Lunch. The Best of British celebrations will continue in summer with the return of Prize Bingo Night on Fri, 31 Aug and the ever popular Comedy Night on Fri, 7 Sep. Please flip through the magazine to find out more about the upcoming events. The World Cup kicks off in June and we will be televising most of the games live in Windsor Arms. Please flip to page 24 and 29 to find a special group stage calendar. This was created and positioned in the middle of the magazine so you can easily pull it out along with the calendar of events this month. Aside from sports, we’re glad to have the Harvard Krokodiloes performing at the Club on Sun, 15 Jul. The Krokodiloes have performed around the world for such luminaries as Ella Fitzgerald, Princess Grace of Monaco, Princess Caroline of Monaco, the Aga Khan, and King Bhumibol of Thailand. Each year, the Krokodiloes continue to travel around the world on an eleven-week, six-continent tour. Some of the group’s notable accomplishments include performing at the inauguration of US President Bill Clinton, the Hong Kong handover ceremonies and performing four times at the world famous Carnegie Hall. I am also happy to inform that we have Aspria as a new addition on our reciprocal Clubs list. Aspria is a decorated European Members’ Club and will be offering our Members their facilities in Italy, Belgium and Germany. We have an extensive list of reciprocal Clubs all over the world so please visit the reception to find out more. See you at the Club. ANDREW CHRISTON General Manager

• COMMITTEE IN THE SPOTLIGHT •
Interview S tephen r e k l a W with
1. What is your role on the Main Committee?
I am the Chairman of the Membership Committee and also coordinate the newly formed Member Journey Committee, made up of the chairs of Membership, Food & Beverage, Activities & Events and Marketing & Communications which aims to coordinate the Club’s focus on providing a great experience for all our Members.
2. Tell us some of your goals as the new Chair for Membership Committee.
New Members are the life blood for the Club, not only because we need to keep up the numbers of Members to ensure a vibrant Club environment but also because the revenue from new Members enables us to fund improvements and investments in the Club’s facilities.
3. How long have you been a Member at The British Club?
It will be six years in July and what an enjoyable six years it has been. The British Club has become a key part of our social life.
4. Where can we always find you at the Club?
Occasionally at the gym (but not enough!), lunch or dinner at the Windsor Arms with my wife, Mary and on Sunday noon, you will find us in the Mountbatten Bar and Grill, enjoying a delicious meal at a superb price.
9. Favourite event at the Club?
The monthly wine dinners are excellent and we always attend with friends.
10. What is your favorite cuisine?
I absolutely love Indian Cuisine and of course the Club has the best Indian food in Singapore!
11. Best place to dine outside the Club?
I love Level33, where in addition to great food, the views and the atmosphere is excellent and there is always something cool about being in the highest brewery in the world.
12. What is your favorite movie of all time?
I love movies and have a lot of favourites – if pushed, I would probably have to say The Godfather 1 & 2, if I can squeeze them both in.
13. What is your spirit animal?
5. What is your favourite dish at the Club?
14. Red or white wine?
Beef Wellington, the famous signature dish at The Mountbatten Bar and Grill is just superb!
6. What is your favorite item from Windsor Shop?
We buy virtually all our wine from the Windsor Shop but my naughty favourite item is the superb Cheddar Cheese.
7. How do you spend your free time?
I am a keen genealogist and have researched my family history. On my father’s side I have traced the Walker’s back to 1787 in Manchester, the city in which I was born.
8. What sets The British Club apart from the others?
I looked up my North American Native Indian spirit animal and it is a Snow Goose, representing determination, perseverance, ambition, resourcefulness, level headedness and being self-involved – I will take that!
Red definitely, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon & Amarone
15. Cake or pie?
At the moment, neither as I am on a strict diet!
16. If you could eat only 3 foods for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Fillet Steak, Salad & very nice bottle of red wine – not that I am fussy!
17. Tell us something about yourself that nobody knows.
I grew up in South Africa and once came face to face with a rhino!
For me it’s the staff, so friendly and welcoming, providing excellent service. As soon as you walk in the door it feels like you have arrived at your second home. If you are interested to know more or to join the subcommittee, please email enquiries@britishclub.org.sg

FIVE EASY WAYS TO MAXIMISE TAX BREAKS ON UK PROPERTY By David Pugh, Director Brits have always had a fascination with property, and it’s a fascination that continues for those who live abroad. A large amount of British expats will own property back in the UK, perhaps by hanging onto their former family home for their return, buying property for their children or as a longer term investment. As the scope and complexity of HM Revenue & Customs’ requirements grow and develop, making use of the permitted reliefs on property investments is one-way UK citizens living overseas can ensure they’re maximising their tax benefits. Here are five examples: 1. Properties purchased to let out as furnished holiday accommodation (FHL) attract business tax reliefs including using the profits as contributions to a tax allowable pension. Plus, unlike buy-to-lets, you can stay in these properties when you are visiting the UK. 2. Bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) are also treated as businesses with business property reliefs, such as lower income taxes and inheritance taxes. And, as with FHLs, you can stay in the B&B when visiting the UK if it is run as a business with a manager during your absence abroad. 3. University-located property: With sons or daughters going to UK university, any accommodation you buy there in your child’s name will attract lower stamp duty if the value is under 500,000 using the ‘first time buyer’ relief. Also, rental income on extra bedrooms gets ‘rent-a-room’ tax relief up to 7,500 a year – and on sale, the property may be exempt from capital gains tax. 4. Owning a farmhouse and farmland in the UK or Europe attracts many tax reliefs as it is treated as a business. You can appoint a farm manager to run the farm in your absence abroad and, as with to FHLs, you then have somewhere to stay when in the UK or Europe. A farm and farmhouse can also benefit from 100% inheritance tax relief. 5. Student accommodation: If you invest in halls of residence for higher-education students, you will pay a reduced commercial rate of stamp duty – and halls of residence can provide you with a good source of regular income. You can also access a number of other property-related tax benefits such as multiple dwellings purchase relief. With the UK’s strong tradition of investing in property as a way of providing for the future, ensuring you do so in a tax-efficient way makes sense and can reap significant benefits when done wisely. It’s always important to note that everyone’s situation and portfolio is different. If some of the above ideas suit your situation or you want to know more, our UK-qualified tax advisers and financial plans can help explain.

SIDDHARTHA ROY For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are most pleased to feature Siddhartha Roy. Siddhartha joined the Club in March 2017. He currently serves as the Director for Regional Sales at BNP Paribas. We find out a bit more about Siddhartha in this exclusive interview.
How did you hear of The British Club, and what made you join the Club?
As the Director of Regional Sales, how do you cope with all the (excessive) numbers in your life?
I have been a regular visitor to the British Club for many years. Over the years, the club and especially the Windsor Arms have become a sort of refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life. If I could choose a couple of reasons – it would be the people – the great people who make me feel at home and the next one would definitely be the location – on oasis of calm in this hectic city. I absolutely look forward to every visit to the club.
Laugh… numbers and targets will be the end of me… more seriously – the best way to unwind is trying to appreciate the little things in life. I find that these little things help me become mindful. This mindfulness somehow helps me focus and at the same time helps let go of all the stress and the excessive numbers. As I travel through life, suddenly the things that are most important are family and true friends.
Tell us more about your work and what you do. To give a very simple answer - I advise and work with large corporate treasuries on how to best manage their working capital across the Asia Pacific Region. A large part of my job involves working with people and understanding their needs. Corporates comprise of people and it involves a lot of interpersonal relationships. If I could put it, this would be the highlight of my job and yeah, the travel would be the icing on the cake.

THE BRITISH CLUB
Lastly, tell us something about yourself, other than crunching numbers for a living. An interesting tidbit about myself – I have had a haircut in every major continent. If I could be bold enough to say – I would like to call myself a global citizen - I was born India, grew up in Africa, worked in Asia and Europe. Other than work, I like to travel, dabble in photography, read and am now working on ways to give back to society

JACKPOT ROOM
TOLLY
From Left: Tolly, Betty, James
The Jackpot Room was a popular hangout for members in the 90s. Originally located at the current holding area at the Reception, the room was moved to the current position at the basement of the Club in 1992. Business flourished back in the 90s and Members queued to get into the Jackpot Room.
Tolly was our friendly Jackpot Assistant at the Club. Albeit not as impressive as Betty in terms of years at the Club, he amassed a good 13 years under his belt and has excellent knowledge in his scope of responsibilities. Tolly’s preceding job was at the Airport Emergency Service as an officer in charge of training new trainees.
With much regret, and due to stricter rules by the government, the Club has decided to cease operations at the Jackpot Room effective 30 Apr 2018. We would like to thank all Members for their support over the years and would also like to take this opportunity to give a special shout out to the staff of the room.
He is married with a son and daughter, 39 years old and 41 years old respectively. He is most proud of his children with his son working in Australia as a Project Manager and his daughter working as an Associate Director in a bank.
Stay tuned in the upcoming months to find out about the future developments of the room!
Similar to many of us (myself included), Tolly likes to have a good beer during his free time and also loves to cook. He will be transferred to Banquet Operations and looks forward to get moving in his new role at the Club.
BETTY
JAMES
Betty served as the Jackpot Supervisor at The British Club and for some, she might not be a familiar face. Working behind the scenes and tucked in a cosy Members only room, Betty started working at the Club in 1995 and was responsible overall for the operations at the Jackpot Room. Prior to her role at the Club, she worked as a supervisor in an electronics company.
Similar to Tolly, James served as the Jackpot Assistant at the Club. He is a year senior in terms of work experience at the Club but is of the same seasoned age of 69 as Tolly. Prior to his journey at the Club, James worked in sales and facilities operations at an exhibition company.
Betty is happily married with a daughter and would like to call her family a small but intimate one. During her free time, Betty enjoys leisure morning jogs to keep herself active and fit. When asked to speak about the closure of the Jackpot Room, she expressed sadness but was also excited about her new role. Effective this month, Betty will be transferred to the Activities and Events department and will be based at the Playroom. Do look out for her should you need any help at the Playroom!

THE BRITISH CLUB
Coincidently, he is also happily married with a son and daughter. James’s son works in the Ministry of Transport and his daughter works in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Often known as the soft spoken guy, he enjoys swimming and jogging in his free time. Having worked for 14 years at the Jackpot Room, James will be transferred to the Banquet Operations department and will work alongside with his familiar partner in crime – Tolly.

Today, Boschendal wines are enjoyed in more than 50 countries. FRIDAY NIGHT HEROES
By The Boaster
The squash section made the strategic decision to limit our entry to the Singapore SRA inter-club competition to the Veterans’ section this year, and that is a choice that has paid early dividends. We opened our season against the professors of NUSS and proved our geometry and knowledge of the laws of motion greater than theirs with a thumping 4-0 win. Neil Frith, Mark Golding, Craig Telmer and Ashley Nicholas were the heroes of the day and BC led the league. A week later, we took on Bedok at the British Club in the Good Friday fixture. Matt Gyde, Andrew Marshall (our captain), Ashley and Liam Douglas all played with everyone except Liam winning. BC 3 – Bedok 1 and BC were sitting at second place. Week 3 saw us take on the Dutch Club at home. Jamie Salamon, Matt Gyde, Ian Bowler and Raymond Kwee played but this time only Raymond managed a win. BC is now fourth but we are still confident of a semi-final place at the end of the league.

NEPTUNE LEAGUE 1
Conor Whelan
By Rebecca Turley
Aiko Arvanitis
The first Neptune League of the season was hosted by The Tanglin Club on 23 Mar. 26 British Club Barracudas travelled to compete against Swiss Club, SICC, Hollandse Club and Tanglin Club. The Neptune Leagues are always very competitive and the standard of swimming is very high. The Barracudas were amazing and came home with an impressive medal count of 43 Gold, 29 Silver and 6 Bronze. Special mention at this meet goes to Conor Whelan and Aiko Arvanitis. Conor Whelan: Silver in Fly, Gold in Free and Gold in both relays. Aiko Arvanitis: Bronze in Fly, Silver in Free and Gold in both relays. Well done to all our swimmers who represented the British Club, you were all fabulous. “Barracudas, Barracudas GO, GO, GO! Always training so we’re never slow, slow, slow, We strive to win, and never give in, So Barracudas, Barracudas, GO, GO, GO!”

MERLION LEAGUE 2
By Rebecca Turley
The Barracudas had a very early start, (7.15am Warm Up!) on 1 Apr as they travelled to Warren Golf and Country Club for the second of the Merlion Meets. The young Barracudas team swam against teams from American Club, Marsden Swim School, Tanglin Club and Warren Golf and Country Club. As ever, the Barracudas, led by Coach Rico and Coach Julian, showed that British Club swimming is very strong and great fun too! 21 swimmers took part in the event and brought home 28 Gold, 10 Silver and 6 Bronze. Special mention for this meet goes to Francesca Masi who won Silver in 100m Free, Silver in 100m Breaststroke and together with her team brought home Gold in the relay. To Francesca and all the Barracudas, well done and ‘Just keep swimming’. “Barracudas, Barracudas GO, GO, GO! Always training so we’re never slow, slow, slow, We strive to win, and never give in, So Barracudas, Barracudas, GO, GO, GO!”

BCFC TAKES ON THAILAND!
By Paul Hackett
As is always the tradition, we embarked on our usual pilgrimage for the 1st tour in April! Destination this time, Thailand, Patong to be precise, despite a vast abundance of Thai hospitality being available, we instead decided upon the Yorkshire Inn! The tourists [16 strong] included a mix of old hands and new virgin tourists, with Henry Skues and Jamie Thuillier bring their respective fathers ages down to an impressive 48 on an average basis! Perhaps for the first time ever, we were undertaking a joint tour with the Shanghai Emeralds, a team which our very own Alan Jope played for [loose terms, probably turned up to watch…] before he saw the light, moved to Singapore and joined a proper footballing team! Despite Jopey being a member, the Emerald boys proved to be a great bunch of lads, and their approach to football and the weekend seemed to be perfectly aligned to our touring strategy! With some 34 tourists descending on Patong with matching shirts, it was fair to say that Patong was lost the footballing sections rather than we were lost to Patong! Rich English had graciously taken charge of arranging the football fixtures and we knew we were in safe hands when on Friday morning he was asking the concierge if there were any local pitches available for two sets of athletes to perform upon…..not to be disappointed by this ‘just in time’ strategy, 48 |
THE BRITISH CLUB
Rich availed himself of a couple of Chang’s and set about sorting logistics and pitches, delivering a great round robin of 7 aside on a very good astro pitch that ultimately saw the BCFC field two teams and the Shanghai boys one. The winners ended up being the red BCFC team, with Paddy losing and surprisingly only delivering 15 shots per game with the outside of his boot, scoring once, which I think was an own goal. No one seemed to enjoy this more than Bryan, our travelling KIWI who has been rehydrating all day, he like so many others was relieved to see that Paddy wouldn’t be collecting silverware that day, nor would Smithy, who decided to ‘retire’ after the first 20 minute game, on small pitches, in the shade having made one save out of 20 possibles! Clearly feeling the heat! With all great tours comes great organisation and planning. The kits masters being Messrs. Challoner and Hodges, made their biggest [perhaps only?] contribution to the tour. The Orange strips [are we the Dutch Club?] were both striking and needless to say, NOT clashing with anything else being worn during the weekend. The normal pool side issuance took place, and the ‘names’ will be forever held in the memory of those in attendance!
• SPORTS & FITNESS •
The second day saw the tournament start, Rich had pre-arranged the games at the BITS [British International Thailand School] and we were to play in a 4 team competition. We had the Shanghai Emeralds, the BITS own team and a local Thai team to make up the league. The first game saw a 1-0 victory against the BITS team, a fine goal from Jamie T was the difference. We then faced the local team on what was the biggest pitch ever played only a touring team and with Smithy in nets we went down to a 4-1 defeat with a goal form…. as a consolation. The last game against Shanghai Emeralds, was a must win to achieve runner up status, Jopey already carrying an injury, [about 12 pints form the night before] – had also felt his calf – a surprise as we never seen him stretch that before! So we could expect a cameo at best, but when Challoner ‘proper did him’ with a bouncing ball, that Jopey attacked, missed and then turned like the QE2 to try and recover from, we knew we were already winners! The final result in the last game was 2-1 and the runners up position was ours! We celebrated the last evening as a mixed touring squad, thanks to Stewie Frame’s arrangements, with a thai banquet, MOM of the match awards and as usual the dreaded tour fines being dished out, collected and at times challenged – much to the cost and disappointment of the challenger! MOM for the BCFC was a Thuillier – and no not Robin! Fines of note went to Rich, Bryan, Paddy, Kenny, Smithy, Henry and Andy Skues, Robin & Jamie Thuillier, Hodgey, Challoner [both Senior!] Framey, Kenny, Jan, and of course me! A great tour and if you would like to be part of the fun, please contact the Club to get in touch with one of the BCFC committee.

KEEP YOUR WITS ABOUT YOU
by Nikki Kemp
Spring is over and so is another Women’s Interclub Tennis Singapore (WITS) season. But we don’t rest on our laurels once the trophies have been handed out, we train until the summer holidays come around and then we are back on court in August to get ready for the new season start in September. With the inevitable June/July exodus of families from Singapore, we are looking for more ladies to join us in our quest for tennis greatness! Currently, we have 5 teams spanning 8 WITS divisions. From our enthusiastic beginner competi-tion team in D division through to the more seasoned (but certainly not jaded) team in Premier B, there really is a playing level for everyone! So whether you are new to tennis, have played a bit but never been brave enough to join a team or you’re experienced and looking to dust off the old racquet in the closet, we have a team for you. With a great team of coaches from Europe, South America, Asia and Australia we really are spoilt for choice on experience and coaching styles. Not only will you improve your fitness and court skills, tennis at the Club offers the opportunity to meet like-minded ladies and make new friends. Contact our tennis convener Liza for more information - tennis@britishclub.org.sg
