2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE
Dear Members, Is it summer already? Making plans for a long vacation? In many other parts of the world the approach of summer may be indicated by a change in the weather, drier and warmer, but, as the last few months have clearly demonstrated, here in Singapore we only experience minor fluctuations in the relentless heat and humidity. However, as there is a lot in store at the Club over the coming couple of months, please don’t rush to more moderate climes just yet. I will mention one very important annual event although I should declare that I have a possible conflict of interest. Don’t forget that special man this Father’s Day. Come Sunday, 18 June, bring your father (or husband) to The British Club to enjoy one of three different lunch spreads at the restaurants. All fathers get to enjoy a complimentary glass of draft Tiger beer to start their afternoon as they might hope to get one. Fathers deserve a treat too! I would like to thank our General Manager and the wider team for tirelessly working behind the scenes for the past few months to plan and deliver the Best of British (BOB) 2017. This series of events would also not have been possible without our sponsors, who support and facilitate in many different ways and who create a financial framework around the BOB that allows the Club to raise funds for our two adopted charities: Riding for the Disabled Association and The Gurkha Welfare Trust. Across the variety of events there will be something to appeal to everyone and, by the time you read this, tickets will be fast running out so don’t leave it too late. Over the BOB period you might have been approached by members of our staff selling Best of British raffle tickets. The proceeds from these tickets go towards supporting the abovementioned charities, and holders of the tickets will take part in our Best of British Raffle Draw. And once more, a very warm welcome to all recent new members of The British Club. Please feel free to approach any of the Member Relations staff to learn more about the variety of activities that are held at the Club. For the month of June, we will be holding our Member’s Connect Night on the first Thursday of the month. This is open to both new and existing Members to meet and get to know the who’s who of the Club. Thereafter, as usual, we will be taking a short break during July and August and the next Member’s Connect Night will take place in September. It looks like it’s going to be a busy June. I wish all of you the best and hope to see you at the Club or at one of the Best of British events. DAMIAN R. HILLS President THE BRITISH CLUB

GM’S MESSAGE 3 CLUB MANAGEMENT
Dear Members, If you have been having a great summer thus far, I promise you things are only going to get better from here on. This coming few months promises to be filled with even more exciting and unforgettable events. This year’s Best of British celebrations open with our signature racing event, The Queen Elizabeth II Cup at The Singapore Turf Club on Sunday, 4 June. Ladies, come decked out in your brightest Sunday dress and best hat and bring along your husbands for an afternoon of excitement accompanied with a mouth-watering buffet. Next, join us at the Club as we host an exquisite Commonwealth Wine & Gourmet Dinner on Friday, 9 June. Indulge your taste buds as we showcase an exquisite 5-course dinner prepared by our 2 Celebrity Chefs – James and Chris Tanner from the UK. Accompanied with fine wines from the Commonwealth, this will be one event you’ll definitely want to attend. Every year since the launch of the Best of British, our signature quiz event, Superbrains, has pitted our wittiest and brainiest against each other. This year is no different. Come Saturday, 10 June, the Club’s best and brightest will gather once more to do battle in The Elizabeth Suite, for the chance to win glory (and exciting prizes, of course!). Gather a team of 8 or go as an individual – and pit your wits for an evening that promises not just fun, competition, and camaraderie but a scrumptious buffet to whet your appetite. And on Sunday, 11 June, we will be holding our Family Day and Open House at the Club. Complete with rides, game stalls, entertainment and a fantastic buffet spread for an afternoon British Street Party, bring the entire household down for an enjoyable Sunday out! On Tuesday, 13 June, prepare to tantalise your taste buds and delight your senses in a sensational gastronomical experience as 2AA Rosette chefs James & Chris Tanner return to display their culinary prowess at our Ladies Luncheon. Enjoy a 3-course lunch prepared specially by the chefs with free flow of wines. Come Wednesday, 14 June, it’s time to play for a good cause at a fun-filled evening at our Prize Bingo Night. Part of the proceeds will go to support our two adopted charities – Riding for the Disabled Singapore and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. The Judy Garland & Liza Minnelli Show on Thursday, 15 June will feature two of the West End’s highly acclaimed musical artistes – Emma Dears & Lucy Williamson. The two legends return to the stage to perform some of their greatest hits. Catch 4 of the best-in-class UK comedians on Friday, 16 June at our Comedy Night. Award-winning Neil Fitzmaurice, seriously hilarious Chris Henry, acerbic and witty Scott Mitchell and Mr Liverpool Pete Price promise an evening of top-notch entertainment. And finally as a fitting end to cap off the 2-week long revelry, we will take you along for a whistle stop tour through some of the most iconic shows from the West End at our Grand Finale: The West End Premiere at The London Palladium on Saturday, 17 June. Stars of the West End will razzle and dazzle on a onenight only performance from the Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and the West Side Story to name a few. It’s going to be a night to remember, so book now to avoid disappointment.

HARI RAYA PUASA
Hari Raya Puasa, at the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan, is observed joyously by Muslims on the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. This year, the festival is on Sunday, 25 June. Hari Raya Puasa is a celebration for accomplishing the fasting month, and of thankfulness. Prayers are said and family ties strengthened by visiting homes of relatives. Homes will be at their best, with new colourful tablecloths, cushions and other household items, as well as decorative lighting. Colourful clothing will be worn. Males customarily dress in beautiful kain samping (short, gold-threaded sarong worn over trousers and shirt) and songkok (dark, velvet cap). Females usually wear lovely baju kurong (ankle-length dress) and head scarf. Children enjoy receiving gifts of money from relatives and friends, presented in decorative envelopes during a salam (handshake). A guest at a Hari Raya Puasa event could present a gift to the host or hostess, such as a bouquet of flowers, sweets, or fruit. Be sure and check that any food item is halal, or acceptable, under Islamic law. As a guest, it is important to accept and partake of food and drink on such an important occasion. Traditional delicacies include rendang (meat curry) with ketupat (rice cake in coconut leaves), sambal udang (prawns in spicy paste), satay and kueh dodol (a coconut based sweet). Soft drinks and fruit juices are the usual beverages. Photographs, Raelene Tan Excerpts from “Indian & Malay Etiquette -A Matter of Course” by Raelene Tan published by Landmark Books. 22 CLUB NEWS
THE BRITISH CLUB
MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 23
MEMBER IN THE
SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are most honoured to feature our esteemed Member, Dr Melvin Tan and his family. Dr Tan joined the Club in January this year. He currently heads his own practice, Melvin Tan Cardiology Practice and is also a consultant cardiologist at the National Heart Centre. We find out a bit more about Melvin in this exclusive interview.
1) How did you hear of The British Club, and what attracted you to join the Club?
I was originally a member of Jurong Country Club and, when the club was in the process of shutting down, they very kindly sourced out some other alternative clubs.
When I came for an introductory visit with the Membership Manager Mr. Ronnie Ng, I was very impressed with his explanation and promotion of the Club’s various services & activities as well as the warm greetings we received from the staff when we were touring the clubhouse.
2) As a local Member, share with us your usual spots for an after-work hangout.
I like the atmosphere at Windsor Arms; semi-formal yet relaxed and casual, and the wide selection of food and drinks on the menu means that I always have a range of cuisines to select from when I dine there!
3) Do you have an interesting story to share in your line of work?
I’m a heart specialist in private practice so I’m afraid that all the “stories” that relate to my work and patients are considered Medical Confidential! However, I would like to say that nothing pleases me more than seeing my patients improve and feel better after I have carried out successful treatments and procedures for them.
4) Lastly, where can we find you on a weekend when you are not at work?
I work on Saturday mornings and the clinic sometimes stretches to the early afternoon, so I try to spend some time unwinding when I get home. We attend church service on Sunday mornings, then enjoy the rest of the day relaxing with the family and our very endearing and lovable dog.

SPORTS & FITNESS 49 SWIMMING:
SWIMMING SECTION REPORT
by Tory Morris & Helen Tynan
On 1 April, 15 brave British Club Masters swimmers entered the prestigious South East Asia Pacific (SEAP) Annual Masters swim competition. Over 20 teams from different clubs competed at the event, coming from across Asia to attend this esteemed Masters event. Although the weather tried to dampen spirits, The British Club team had an amazing afternoon and managed to come 5th overall against some of the best Masters swimmers in the region. There were many magical moments as the Club received 23 Golds, 5 Silvers and 10 Bronzes. It was a superb display of competitive swimming. A massive thank you to Dawn and Enrico for organising the event; the team really couldn’t have done so well without all their wonderful albeit gruelling training, in the weeks leading up to the race. While it was a great team effort by all, a special mention must be made to Karen Kelly & Neil Tryler who entered many individual events and helped increase our overall medal tally. You were both brilliant and amazing. On a final note, Tory and Helen will be bidding a fond farewell to Singapore in the summer, as they both relocate back to the UK after many years at the Club. With this in mind the Club is looking for some new swimming convener talents to take their place and bring some new ideas to the section. If you are interested or want more information on what this extremely rewarding position can offer, please email swimming@brititshclub.org.sg.

SPORTS & FITNESS 51 GOLF:
GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Willie Park Sr. Call me Willie. Seems appropriate as we’ve had to postpone a couple of events recently due in main to the slow take-up. Just a note on Willie
Park Sr., 4-time winner of the Open Championship including the year 1860, when it first was played. Back then, when it was quite the norm to father 10 children, the Open Championship was a bit like one of our golf outings; only 8 golfers competed.
Phuket Tour 2017 For those keen to join our Golf Tour to Phuket, we have rescheduled the event which will now take place in October, thus avoiding the rainy
season. Families are most welcome.
April Stableford at Bintan Lagoon Resort; Ian Baker-Finch Course Nine golfers participated in the April Stableford, braving the tumultuous ferry ride to Bintan. These weekend games are ideal for our young
golfers too as the courses are less crowded, although perhaps the ferry ride is a bit off-putting. Reports that the course was looking a bit tired
didn’t appear to upset the scoring. Our runaway winner was Chris Riley, scoring 42 points and booking his seat on the bus to The Els Club in December. Runner-up was Ashley Morris, 10 points further back. The only nearest the pin was celebrated by Agnes Weber. A great day was had by all.
Chris Riley collects the winner’s cheque for $1,000,000.
Ashley Morris receiving the ‘steady golfer’ runner-up prize.
Taming the Tiger, Agnes picked out the green deep in the jungle.

SPORTS & FITNESS 53 SQUASH:
SSRA ESSAY By The Boaster If it’s Easter, then as well as time for eggs, it’s time for the Singapore Squash Racquets Association’s annual inter-club league. The British Club is entered in the E-Grade competition. As this league has no age criteria, the other eleven clubs often use it to develop their juniors, and this usually means we arrive on court and say ‘C’mon son, let’s get the match started’ to which our opponents’ reply ‘OK Uncle’. Co-captains Andrew Marshall and Nick Fell often have trouble picking just four players from our eager squad to beg and threaten to get four players out every Monday night, and unfortunately the team has laid a few eggs of their own to start the season, with a series of tough losses. Things are now looking up, though, as we just celebrated our first victory - against the Hollandse Club. Anurag made his debut for the team and fought hard but lost 3-1. Liam also suffered a 3-1 loss. So far, so bad, but then Craig beat his opponent 3-0 in a match enlivened by a refereeing question: after the 2nd game, the Dutchman asked for extra time because he said his ‘underpants were on backwards’. Only in squash . . . That set the match up for a great finish and of course the ever-reliable (normally reliable? Sometimes reliable?) James Bauly then won 3-1 to win the tie. ‘WAIT!’ you say, ‘that is only 2 matches each?’ Welcome to the marvel of countback. At two games all, aggregate games (and points if necessary) are counted and the BC won 8 games to 7 by virtue of both of our losers winning a game. Well done all. The 2017 British Club E-grade squad is: Jamie Salamon • James Bauly • Steve Settle • Martin Huxley • Craig Telmer • Matthew Gyde • Andrew Marshall • Nick Fell • Anurag Mathur • Ashley Nicholas • Andrew Vine • David Hogg • Liam Douglas • Andy Greenaway
