Dear Members,
Summer is upon us. In many other parts of the world the approach of summer may be indicated by a change in the weather, drier and warmer, but, as the last few months have clearly demonstrated, here in Singapore we only experience minor fluctuations in the relentless heat and rain. However, as there is a lot in store at the Club over the coming couple of months, please don’t rush to more moderate climes just yet.
I will mention one very important annual event although I should declare that I have a conflict of interest. Don’t forget that special man this Father’s Day, Sunday, 16th June, and bring your

father (or husband) to The British Club to enjoy great lunch spreads at the restaurants. Fathers deserve a treat too!
The General Manager and the wider team have already delivered a number of fantastic Best of British 2019 events including the recent celebrity chef dinners with Darren McGrady. This BoB series of events would not be possible without our sponsors, who support and facilitate in many different ways and who create a financial framework around the BoB that allows the club to also raise funds for our two adopted charities: Riding for the Disabled Association and The Gurkha Welfare Trust. Across the variety of events taking place throughout the year there will be something to appeal to everyone and I encourage you all to try and attend at least one.
I’m pleased to see a recent increase in membership applications, with many new members being introduced by referral from existing members. Current members are our best ambassadors and the introduction of new members is fundamental to the longevity of the club in this transient environment. Do take this opportunity to refer your friends and earn significant rewards

from the club. You might be interested to know that there is an Open Day on June 15th, which would provide an excellent opportunity for prospective members to get to know the club.
And once more, a very warm welcome to all recent new members of The British Club. Please feel free to approach any of the Member Relations staff to learn more about the variety of activities that are held at the Club.
Other highlights for the rest of the month include a wine and gourmet dinner by Bodegas Altanza, a Jesmonite marbled coaster workshop, a candle workshop and an Indian cooking demonstration class. It looks like it’s going to be a busy June.

Dear Members,
Summer is here! And we are packed with activities this June and July.
Join us for Family Day and Open House as we bring food, fun, games and more. Grab your family and friends and head over to participate in the activities that we have lined up for you. This is our way of appreciating you as our members all these years.
We celebrate Fatherhood this June and what better way to treat the fathers or father figures in our lives than with a meal. There’s a saying that goes “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” This might be true to most. We have some options from course meals and a semi or international buffet lunch here at the Club. If food is not a viable option, we have wine and spirit promotions as well. And lastly, a coding activity has been lined up to honor our fathers and what better way to spend it than with some father-son or daughter bonding time.
Ladies, you’re not forgotten. This month, you can create your own

In July, we will be organizing a summer camp for the children. They will be encouraged to try something new every day and be an active team player. New friendships will be forged along with learning a new skill. A wine and gourmet dinner by the DiGiorgio family is coming up, along with Saffron Gin tasting for you, world chocolate day and arts and craft for the children.
As you know, the Club has made it our mission to eradicate single-use plastics from the Club back in 2018. We are proud to say that we did it and you can find our Eco Report on our website under the Corporate Social Responsibility tab. All of the eco-friendly packaging we now use instead of single use plastic does come at a considerable higher cost, amounting to over $9,000 per month. Therefore, in line with working towards our vision to reduce wastage,
every restaurant in the Club will be charging $1.00 extra for takeaway orders beginning 1 August 2019.
We are already at the halfway mark of the year, for those of you travelling this summer, enjoy your holidays.

8 THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A SINGAPORE-BASED FINANCIAL ADVISER
By Huw Wedlock, The Fry Group
It’s hard to know where to go for sensible and transparent financial advice – so here are nine points to consider when selecting a financial adviser.
1. Expertise
The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) requires basic exams and qualifications to provide financial advice. Additional UK qualifications, such as the Certified Financial Planner (CFP), CII DipPFS, Chartered Financial Planner and the Investment Management Certificate (IMC), are good indicators an adviser has UK expertise, important if you are seeking guidance on your UK assets or planning to return to the UK at some point.
2. Transparency
Good advisers volunteer information, enabling you to make informed decisions aware of all implications. They are open about the process for advice, remuneration and total fees. Advisers should provide clients with the flexibility to change their plans. Arrangements which reduce flexibility through exit penalties are restrictive and usually unnecessary.
3. Remuneration
Fees should be clear and easy to identify – a straightforward conversation enabling you to assess the true value of the advice. The basis of your adviser’s remuneration –commission, fees or a combination of both – should be explained in writing, so should additional charges – exit costs and lock-in periods. Beware of contracts requiring fixed payment periods – cheaper and better vehicles are often available. There is often a high correlation between advisers’ commission and the investment providers’ costs. Your adviser should provide recommendations independent of commission.
4. Well Established
Browse the company website to help determine that it is well established, fully regulated and its office and advisers are based in Singapore. See how long the company has been providing advice, worldwide and specifically in Singapore.
Check the MAS website if you are in any doubt that the company or adviser is regulated here. A company with global reach can help provide continuity of advice and support when you move on from Singapore.
5. Holistic Advice
You need true financial planning based on a comprehensive review of your personal objectives and needs, rather than being sold products. Advice should be written and include a clear rationale for its recommendations. Ancillary services from the same company, such as tax advice and will writing, allow a tailored and holistic financial strategy for you.
6. Liquidity
Ideally, everything you invest in should have a price every day, enabling you to change allocations without delay or a price penalty.
7.
Communication and Support
In most cases, your adviser should contact you every six months to review your portfolio and changing circumstances and needs. You should expect strong administrative support with timely responses to enquiries.
8. Quantified Investment Risks
Your adviser should explain to you the risks associated with investing. You should make investment choices based on the appropriate level of risk, taking into account your investment horizon, how long you plan to save, or when you may require the proceeds of your investments.

The Facts
Worldwide, diabetes is on the rise. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 422 million adults have diabetes. This means that 1 in 11 adults on the planet are currently living with diabetes. The figures are more concerning in Singapore, where it is estimated that 1 in 9 Singaporeans have diabetes (MOH).
Almost half of the people with diabetes don’t know it because it can take a long time to develop symptoms. Some basic facts that are important to know about this all too common disease.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin (the hormone responsible of controlling the blood sugar levels) or when our body has trouble using the insulin it produces effectively. This leads to high blood sugar levels (or hyperglycemia), which over time can cause severe damage to many of the body’s systems (notably the nerves and the blood vessels).
There are 3 commonly known types of diabetes:
• Type 1 diabetes: This type of diabetes usually affects young people. It requires daily administration of insulin. The cause is not known and there is no way to prevent it.
• Gestational diabetes: This type of diabetes occurs in pregnant woman, and is usually diagnosed by a screening test between 24-28 weeks of pregnancy. Most women with gestational diabetes will be well controlled with diet and exercise and will resume normal blood sugar levels after pregnancy. However, these women remain at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later on in life.
• Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is caused by the inability of the body to effectively use the insulin that the pancreas produces. It is the type of diabetes that affects the most people around the world, and is largely a result of obesity and low levels of physical activity.
what you need to know
What are the symptoms of diabetes?
Symptoms may begin gradually and can be quite difficult to identify at first. They may include malaise and fatigue, increased voiding and increased thirst, blurred vision, poor healing of skin wounds, increased frequency of bladder infections or thrush. Most people with Type 2 diabetes won’t have any symptoms, and might be diagnosed through a screening blood test done because of other risk factors (people in the family with diabetes, obesity, poor physical activity, cigarette smoking, etc.)
What are the consequences of diabetes?
Over the years, high levels of blood sugar can cause irreversible damage to the eyes, the nerves, the kidneys, the heart and the blood vessels. This means an increase in the risk to suffer from heart attacks and strokes, increased risk of blindness, kidney failure, and many consequences of poor circulation (poor healing wounds and ulcers, amputations and erectile dysfunction).
How can you try to prevent getting diabetes?
The good news is, even if you have a strong family history of diabetes, simple lifestyle modifications have been shown effective at preventing or delaying the development of Type 2 diabetes. To help prevent diabetes and its complications, people should:
- Maintain a healthy body weight
- Be regularly active (30 min of moderate to intense physical activity on most days)
- Eat a healthy, balanced diet (low in refined sugars and saturated fats)
- Avoid cigarette/tobacco use
In summary, if you are an adult over the age of 40 with other risk factors (obesity, poor physical activity, smoker, previous gestational diabetes or family history of diabetes), you should talk to your family doctor about the possibility of getting screened for diabetes. If the results are normal, they can be repeated every 3 years.
For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature
Dieter Knechtel and family.
Dieter has been the Managing Director for Ferrari for more than 4 years now. Although he spends almost half his time in the year travelling, the Club holds a special place in his heart and he always comes to visit whenever he’s in town. Read on to learn more about Dieter and his family.
1) Tell us more about your family and yourself.
I am from Vienna Austria and my wife Paola is originally from Cali, Colombia. We have been living in Asia for 16 years and in Singapore for 4 years now. We have three kids, Emanuela (12), Isabella (10) and Nicolas (7). They all go to the German school at Dairy Farm Road.
A few months ago we have enlarged our family by adopting 2 dogs from SPCA. They are German shorthair Pointers cross-breed and really have brought a lot of happiness to our family.
My wife loves the hot climate certainly much more than I do but I think we are all very privileged to live in Singapore and plan to stay for longer.
2) What attracted you to the British Club and what made you join?
We have seen a few other Clubs before but weren't convinced, either because they were boring or the maintenance of the Club facilities was disappointing.
Then we once spontaneously walked in after a German school event across the street and were quite surprised to find this hidden gem. Location is one plus for us but the variety of offers and the level of quality in facilities and service is another important point. We really like the good vibes here. The food offer is better than in other Clubs and reasonably priced for Singapore standards.
3) We hear you work in Ferrari, does that mean you get to drive one?
Yes, that is correct. I am heading the Region Far East and Middle East for Ferrari, and sure, there a plenty of opportunities for me to drive our great products during the many events we organize on the road or on track. Ferrari company cars however are an exclusive brand with limited availability of product and these Ferraris are made to order for our clients only. It wouldn’t be fair to drive the latest and the best Ferrari when our clients at the same time have to wait for their dream car for up to 2 years or even can’t get an allocation at all. Exclusivity is equally important internally for us.
4) Tell us more about your work.
Like many of us being based in Singapore and having a regional role I also fly around quite much. I am covering 18 countries and on top of that there is a lot to do in Italy. Mostly I am busy with product launches, press conferences and media interviews. I also attend dealer conferences or dealer openings but these are simply business reviews in the various markets. I am out of the country for about half a year, but I enjoy coming back home to Singapore every time trying to establish some sort of “routine” at the office with business meetings with my senior team and coupled with lots of conference calls. After work I enjoy my family dinners at home, jogging with my dogs, going to the gym and coming to the British Club on the weekends!
5) Which outlet do you enjoy dining at and what are your favourite dishes at the British Club?
On Sundays. It’s most relaxing for us when we go to Mountbatten for lunch. Apart from that we enjoy all the other outlets as well and decide spontaneously where to eat. We love the Indian food with all the Tandoor specials, curries, lentils etc. and the kids love the Pasta Bolognaise and the Pizzas of course. We are big wine lovers and whenever there is a wine dinner, if time allows, we would join.
I’ll let you in on a secret, some of my best Gin & Tonic I have had in Singapore are in the Mountbatten!

ADVENTURES OF AN ACCIDENTAL AUCTIONEER
Like countless other Brits I came to Asia ‘just for three months’. Long suffering better half came home one day with news of a short-term assignment somewhere warm. We looked at each other, looked out of the window, considered the angry November sky, the howling wind, the skin-piercing drizzle, and we started packing …
Three months turned into three years in the blink of an eye. After a minor moment of major overenthusiasm during a real estate viewing (possibly helped along by one too many medicinal G&T’s!) we became the proud leaseholders of an old sausage factory on the edge of Chinatown. 5000sqft of ‘atmosphere’, crying out to be turned into a home. So far, so craycray!
Most of the crying was actually done by long suffering better half when reality dawned; no more marble lined condo with requisite pool, gym & smiling concierge … in fact no more bedrooms, bathrooms or kitchen. Thankfully we were to make one of the 21st century’s greatest discoveries –Deliveroo!
NEXT ISSUE:
To cut a very long story short the factory eventually became a home and I moved onto my next challenge; hunting around for interesting furniture to fill the space. Back home in the UK I’d spent far too many hours treasure hunting in the small auction rooms that dot Devon and Somerset, so I set outmeasuring tape in hand - to find the same in Singapore!
You can guess what happened next! The over-enthusiasm returned and before I knew it, I was renovating factories again –this time an ex hawker centre. (I’m writing this from my office, a former chicken rice stall). By a remarkable stroke of luck, I was also introduced to another recent import from London (and from a rather fancy outfit named Christie’s).
And before we knew it Hotlotz was born!
CUTTING OUR TEETH AND THE FIVE MOST FANTASTIC THINGS WE’VE SOLD

On the palate, heather honey and lemon. Soft and delicate mouth-feel. A bit less fruity and a bit more spicy than the nose. A slow start before blossoming with more spices, and a touch of oak and malt. The finish is medium long finish. Towards the end, the sweetness gives way to more herbal and green notes.

IT’S A MENTAL GAME
By Liza Rowan
You’ve heard it a thousand times, right? You’ve also played feeling invincible (no?) to go out the next time and play like you’ve never held a racket (yes! ).
What can we do to live more of the former, and a little, or rather a lot, less of the latter…?
This month, I’ve solicited help from our very own Coach Mustafa along with Sports Psychologist, Carlin Lee (carlin.lee.hg@gmail.com)
How can players get into the right mindset before a match?
Coach Mustafa advises to focus on preparing yourself physically and mentally. The former includes a proper warm up (see May’s BC Tennis Section article) and executing good practice strokes. To prepare mentally, try to centre yourself in the present moment and bring confidence as you enter the match.
If you have a pre-match routine (think Nadal!) stick to this, so that it keeps you focused.
Any advice on how to stay focused during a match?
The best thing to do, according to Sports Physchologist Carlin Lee, is to focus on the immediate task – e.g. if serving, go through the simple thought of planning where to direct your shot, before moving into your pre-serve routine.
As the receiver, go through some centering strategies to increase your focus to prepare for the incoming serve; these centering strategies usually involve taking a breath to bring your thoughts to the present (like in Mindfulness techniques), which help to calm nerves along with staying focused
Coach Mustafa reinforces that to play at your peak, you MUST focus on the process. The process is defined as thinking only about the current point, one shot at a time.
The process is also called a ‘present-moment focus’ – it may be focusing on your tactics for one point, or focusing on your service routine or return of service.
The best way to win points is to focus on what’s working and stick with it. Focusing on what’s working requires letting go of mistakes (bad shots, unforced errors, misjudged returns) and sticking with the strategies that helped you acquire the lead (staying loose, going for it on each shot without thinking of the possible end result).
“ “ If your match strategy is working, why change it? Stick with the mindset that created the lead
Coach Mustafa, on top of his mental game (wise words, Mustafa!)
Any tips on staying positive if losing in a match?
Coach Mustafa recommends a 3-step action plan
1. Switch your focus
- Ask yourself “why am I really here”? Is it just to win or is there a deeper reason? (for example to improve your game or to enjoy a competitive sport).
- Does that reason go away if you’re not winning? The chances are that is does not; so use this thought process to relax and stay in the game.
2. Concentrate on the action
- The mental energy you’re not wasting on negative thoughts would be much better applied to concentrating on what’s really happening on the court
3. Practice more
- Use the loss to create a game plan for how to maximize your practice time in the future. As they say practice with purpose!
We all get down after a bad shot - how can we let this go and move on?
Carlin advises that this mental skill is a process that players have to learn, and all elite players use this. This process involves:
1) Shot (end of last point / play)
2) Emotional release
3) Reset
4) Verbal cue (encouragement/play decision)
5) Execute
This becomes the acronym SERVE!
After a shot, players can release their emotions, either positively or negatively. Holding back emotions can lead to a further escalation of emotions, and may have effects later in the match.
Players have to learn to reset and to calm themselves down quickly, e.g. through deep breathing techniques. Verbal cues and self-talk will help increase their confidence, increase their focus, and remind them of what they need to do, or of the adjustments they need to make.
This helps to bring their mindset to the next shot which they execute: with the decision already made in the last step, the player needs to be committed and execute with their best effort.
In doubles play, how can we help our partner stay positive?
There should be a high level of trust between the players, which allows them to know that their partner will support them in times of need. Constant encouragement is a vital key, and this can be communicated via verbal or non-verbal methods. Rather than get down and frustrated with the situation, focus on what you have to do; lead by example J
Most of us play our best in training but not so great in a match situation. How can we ‘bring our game’?
It is said, “we should practice the way we are going to play, and not play the way we practice”. Practice is good for learning fundamentals and fine-tuning of your game; however these should not be initiated during match play.
Before competitions, the best type of practice would be simulation practice, where you are placed in a similar environment/mood as the competition itself. These simulations can be done via physical simulation or through mental visualization; assuming a similar stress levels experienced during the simulation practice, this allows the player to bring the same level of “game” to the actual competition itself.
What are your thoughts, readers?
We’d love you to share any of your comments, or indeed ask any questions, on our Private Facebook Group – if not already a member, you can request to join here: https://www. facebook.com/groups/BCTennisSection/
Until next time, I’ll leave you with this quote from Serena Williams:
“Tennis is mostly mental. You win or lose the match before you even go out there”!
LEAGUE SQUASH AND FRIENDLIES
Our squash section plays E grade on Monday nights in a Singapore national squash league from March until August. A match consists of 4 squash singles matches. Captain Andrew Marshall said “it has been a tough start to the season and we currently sit second from bottom but we are improving and have won 2 out of our last 3 matches”. Vice-Captain Gary Seston said “the results do not yet include our big 4-0 win last night that will see us climb well up the table”.
We also play at least 4 “Friendlies” a year. We narrowly lost our first friendly of 2019 against the Dutch Club. Ragnar, Liam, James B and Omair organise our friendlies. We hope to drink beer out of a cup later in 2019!
