2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE

Dear Members, We hope you had a good start to the Year of the Rooster! The Club celebrated in style with many Members attending the various events. If you haven’t participated up to now I wholly recommend trying to get up to the Club to join in the celebrations next year. The Club’s survey of Members has now closed and I would like to thank all those that took part and provided valuable feedback. The members of the Main Committee and the management of the Club will receive the results of the survey and we have allocated time over a coming weekend to work through those results in order to consider actions that could be taken. This month there are again many activities and we hope that there will be something for everyone. Our Open House will be taking place on Sunday, 12 March. The Club will be open to both Members and non-Members alike, so bring your friends who have expressed interest in joining. Members will stand a chance to earn triple reward points should a friend sign up for their British Club membership on Sunday. For our regular Wine & Gourmet Dinner, we will be featuring a selection of fine wines from Chile, long known for its exceptional climate and terrain. We are happy to have Mr. Nick Tullet, Commercial Director for Asia Pacific & Middle East for LFE Wines with us this March to share his appreciation of wines over a 4-course dinner. This event will take place on Friday, 31 March from 7.30pm onwards and reservations are required so do book your seats early.

GM’S MESSAGE 3 CLUB MANAGEMENT

Dear Members, Hope you had a great February. As the first quarter of the year comes to a close, I would like to warmly welcome all our new Members who have joined the Club, and highlight some of the events happening in the coming month. On the first Thursday of every month, we have the Members Connect Night, an evening cocktail reception held at the Treetops Terrace. This is an event to officially welcome newly joined Members of the Club, and also for existing Members to mingle and network with one another. Our next Members Connect Nights will take place on 2 March and 6 April. Kindly approach the Member Relations team at the Reception desk if you would like to join us. Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day at the Windsor Arms on Friday, 17 March. Saint Patrick is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland, and is credited with bringing Christianity to the shores of Ireland. Join us as we serve up authentic Irish specials along with Irish ale and stout at $9.50+ a pint. There will also be Friday Night Live entertainment by Undercovers, so be sure to make yourself available on that night! We will be having our Epic Rainbow Pool Party on Saturday, 25 March at the Poolside from 6.00pm onwards. Prepare yourselves for a pool party of epic colour proportions as we bring on the fun with a bubble show, a host of exciting games and a rainbow ball pit. This is an event not to be missed by children and adults alike, so bring the whole family down for some fun by the pool! As is customary, we will also be ending off the night with a ceremonial switching off of all lights at the lobby in conjunction with Earth Hour, at 8.30pm to 9.30pm. On a final note, I would like to inform all Members of the appropriate dress codes when entering the Club, as well as the various food outlets within the Club. As a guide, you may refer to our 3 Fundamentals Card on the appropriate attire required. To obtain a copy of said card, kindly approach any of our Member Relations team at the Club’s Reception desk. Have a great rest of the week and hope to see you around the Club.

QROPS IN THE SPOTLIGHT By David Pugh

While many expats were gearing up for the long trip home before Christmas, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond was in a slightly less festive mood when he delivered the detail of proposed changes to overseas pension schemes in the draft legislation for the Finance Bill 2017. While the Bill’s proposed changes – which take effect from 6 April 2017 – were largely heralded in the Autumn Statement, it went a long way to aligning overseas pensions such as QROPS (now known as ROPs) more closely with the rules already in place for UK pensions. We’ve identified six key areas where overseas pensions, and specifically QROPS, will be effected: 1.

The Bill has extended the UK’s taxing rights from 5 to 10 years for UK pension rights transferred to QROPS. Currently you can take a 30% lump sum from a QROPS provided you have been outside of the UK for 5 complete tax years. This lump sum is tax-free at source, but may be taxable in your country of residence depending on their rules for receipt of foreign pension lump sums. The good news is this only applies to schemes funded post 6 April 2017, essentially where the transfer is received into the QROPS on or after that date.

2.

The requirement for pension schemes to designate a minimum 70% of funds that have had UK tax relief, which have to be used to provide the member with an income for life, has been dropped. The aim of this is to equalise the position across all tax jurisdictions. As a consequence of this, flexible access will now become available from QROPS in non-EU member states should the relevant local authorities choose to adopt it.

3. Non-EEA schemes are now required to introduce a requirement that if the pension scheme is not regulated by a body in the country where the scheme is established, the provider of the scheme must be regulated for the purpose of establishing and running the scheme. In addition, the jurisdiction must hold a tax information exchange agreement (TIEA) with the UK. 4. ROPS/QROPS can now pay benefits earlier than the “pension age test” outlines, which is currently 55 years, but only where such payments are authorised member payments under a registered pension scheme, for example as a result of serious ill health. 5. The further revision of the ROPS/QROPS conditions means that the list of qualifying jurisdictions may potentially get smaller. 6.

ROPS/QROPS will now get a tax free lump sum of 25% when paid from foreign pension schemes to a UK resident, bringing this in line with tax rules for UK registered pension schemes. HMRC now intends to tax all lump sums received from overseas pensions which exceed the 25% tax-free allowance, and the 10% deduction from UK income tax on foreign pension income will however no longer be effective. Essentially, any amount over a lump sum of 25% paid from a foreign pension scheme to a UK resident will be subject to UK taxation. This would apply to all overseas pension pots going forward regardless of when transfers were made to them.

So, while there were no huge surprises in the 2017 Finance Bill, the changes for pension holders living overseas are significant and shouldn’t be ignored.

“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan

SAINT DAVID’S DAY

Celebrated on 1 March, Saint David’s Day is the national day of Wales, honouring the popular Patron Saint of that country, who has been revered since the 12th century. Part of Great Britain, Wales is at the south-west of England.

The vegetarian priest founded a number of monasteries and is said to have performed several miracles. Saint David is often depicted with a white dove on his shoulder. It is said that Saint David asked soldiers in battle to wear leeks on their headgear so as to distinguish them from the enemy, in a battle they subsequently won. This led to the leek becoming the national emblem of Wales, with the green and white colours of the vegetable ensconced in the Welsh flag that also incorporates a heraldic red dragon. Capital city Cardiff hosts a colourful street parade on 1 March, complete with singing and dancing. Participants and spectators proudly wear leeks, or the national flower of a golden daffodil with its trumpet shape signifying victory. On this occasion, the leek, with its mild onion taste, takes centre stage in Welsh cooking, especially creamy leek and potato soup. Flavourful cawl (lamb and vegetable stew) is popular, as is traditional tea-bread bara brith with its spicy aroma, together with a glass of soothing honeyed mead. Personally, I enjoy cheesy Welsh rarebit. The current heir to the British throne is the Prince of Wales. “Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus” (‘Happy Saint David’s Day’) Photographs, flag courtesy of The British Club, lamb courtesy of The Butcher.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 15

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT For this month’s issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are most pleased to feature Jonathan Mackenzie. Jonathan joined the Club in March 2016. He is currently the Head of Data, Technology and Innovation at Publicis Media, part of Publicis Groupe, a French multinational advertising and public relations firm, and one of the largest marketing and communications companies in the world. Jonathan also contributes his knowledge and experience in his field as a member of the Club’s Marketing Committee.

1) First and foremost, tell us a little bit about yourself. What brought you to Singapore and ultimately, The British Club?

We first came to Singapore in 2011 having been living in Dublin previously and it was my sister who first seeded the idea with us as she moved here with her husband back in 2009. Ireland was an amazing place to live but after enduring two brutally cold winters and the harshness of the Irish economy at the time we decided to move to warmer climes on both fronts. We travelled out to Singapore for a 2-week recce in May 2011 and had relocated by October. We joined The British Club just last year primarily for the facilities. We were moving house to accommodate an ever-expanding family and wanted to make sure the kids could still swim and play tennis.

2) Tell us more of your work at Publicis Groupe and what you do.

I have always specialised in digital advertising and today head up a practice within Publicis Media called Data, Technology and Innovation. Essentially, we plan advertising campaigns for our clients but my team focuses on the use of technology and data to automate a lot of the process and improve the performance of our clients’ campaigns. Today, consumers are generating what’s known as a “data exhaust” in their use of mobile phones and the internet and it’s the information contained within this vast array of data that helps us to understand them better and hopefully to put ads in front of them that are more relevant and therefore more effective.

3) Your work at Publicis Groupe would definitely make you a very busy man. How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance as an expat working in such a fast-paced society like Singapore?

I think I prefer the expression work-life ‘integration’ rather than balance. A balance suggests an equal weighting which is unrealistic but an integration suggests finding a way to prioritise what’s important in both. I achieve this with a set of rules that I try to stick by. I can work reasonably flexible hours should I want to but I try to keep to the working day as best I can otherwise your flexible hours quickly turn into round the clock working. I’m sure different things work for different people but I found that I needed to really think about the things that are important to me and how to build them into my routines. I make sure I spend time with my children every day when I’m not travelling, even if it’s just having breakfast together or getting home for bedtime. I also try to build in downtime to the day. It’s a time when I might exercise, enjoy time with the family or just do something I enjoy.

4) How has being on the Club’s Marketing Committee impacted your experience here as a Club Member? I think it has given me a much deeper understanding of the Club that I wouldn’t necessarily have had if I had just been coming as a Member. I have discovered more of the history and the people behind its inception and seen the efforts and investment that go into things like the refurbishment of the Windsor Arms and the Gym. The British Club is a busy, vibrant and social place but having visited other clubs in Singapore it’s clear that that doesn’t happen on its own. I also managed to treat my wife to a sneak preview of the Windsor Arms just before its official reopening which earned me a few “Brownie points”.

5) Lastly, tell us something interesting about yourself (a hobby, interest etc.)

Since coming to Asia I’ve really got into golf. The courses here are absolutely stunning and it’s a very sociable sport to play. Hopefully, as I get older, I’ll get a bit better! SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT

Glen Goyne Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Glengoyne is unique in producing Highland Single Malt Whisky matured in the Lowlands. Located upon the Highland Line, the division between the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland, Glengoyne’s stills are in the Highland while maturing casks of whisky rest across the road in the Lowlands. Unlike many malt whiksy distilleries today, Glengoyne does not use peat smoke to dry their barley, but instead uses warm air. Glengoyne 10 Years

Glengoyne 12 Years

Glengoyne 15 Years

Fresh green apples, toffee and a hint of nuttiness. This is the taste of distilling slower than anyone else in Scotland, of barley we dry by air – never peat – and of hand-selected sherry casks crafted from European and American oak.

Lemon zest, toffee apples and a scent of coconut. Our signature sherry wood brings intensity and richness, while first fill bourbon casks add fresh notes of citrus and vanilla.

Complex depths and brigh tropical notes – with a spicy oak finish. Hints of candied lemon and pineapple reveal the influence of first-fill bourbon casks, balanced by the rich intensity of our signature sherry wood.

SPORTS & FITNESS 43 CRICKET:

NO POLITICAL CORRECTNESS HERE! By Paul Twine I want to start this New Year with a funny story about Farmer Joe and his prize rooster and chooks. I told the Farmer Joe and his prize rooster story at a conference in Chicago many years ago and although the laughter was uproarious, it was very evident fairly quickly that the audience had absolutely no idea what a chook was. Before I reprise this cautionary and side-splittingly hilarious tale, I should warn you to be prepared for a very sad beginning, a long middle and an unforeseen, strange but nevertheless funny ending. Pretty much like 2016. What is the relevance here? Well it is the year of the Fire Rooster in China and Chicken in Blighty. You will be pleased to hear that if you want to play cricket with probably the best bunch of lads in Singapore if not the world, you won’t need a popular vote or invoke Article 50 solo and then have the High Court tell you it’s a team decision. Nor will you need an Executive Order, (which is really weird in any case when you control both houses of parliament). Indeed, all you need to do is tell us that you would like to play. No matter what your gender, your age, your religion or your political bias, cricketing ability or any other preference for that matter, we have a spot for you in our team of probably the Best People in the World. For starters, 15-year old Monti Buck managed to bowl 5 overs for 3 wickets in 21 runs during our first game of the season for the Woodpeckers. Not bad for a young lad. So if you think that you can offer diversity (or not!) and are keen to have a laugh on a weekly or less frequent basis, you’ll find us scratching around the excellent British Club ground at Turf City most Saturdays. Oh, and Farmer Joe? If you want to hear the rooster joke then you’ll just have to turn up for a game. 2017! Make us great again.

Todd Buck with son Monti who batted together in the first game of the season.

SPORTS & FITNESS 45 FOOTBALL:

FOOTBALL REPORT

The British Club Football had another tremendous year with many highlights and entertaining moments on and off the field. Two tours, four teams playing nearly 52 Saturdays in the year, midweek friendlies, golf matches, cricket against the Cricket Section, the odd long lunch, rehydrating in Scores, plenty of wise words but alas no silverware. This sums us up pretty well. The lack of silverware in 2016 has not been for the want of trying. We came a close second coming runners-up in EFL Premier League, EFL Qualifying League and the EFL Cup (narrowly losing to the SCC). Our four(well eight really) team captains, Mark Saurin/Paul Hackett, Bill Palmer/Steve Clark, Stephen Mangham/Mike Hughes and Nick Challoner/Steven Hodge ensure we have a good blend of fun and competition which makes the section so enjoyable. If you are not playing, are between the ages of 14 – 65 years, fancy brushing off the cobwebs from those boots you might have hung up years ago, get in touch and we shall get you involved – you might surprise or even surpass yourself! Some magic moments from 2016 included the arrival of the ‘squid’ (Ho Chi Minh tour), the ‘Guinness Boat Race’ to beat Hibernians FC at their annual Muddy’s Cup (it went to the 19th hole, of course), Steve Clark’s outside of the left foot free kick wonder goal, Scores curry buffet on Saturday evenings, the Annands on Tour in Bali, Rich English match reports, a trio of Saurins in the first team and a trio of Summers’ generations (grandfather, dad and twins sons) playing in the same game…

By James Morris

The Bali Tour was again one of the most awaited events of the year. Paul Davies exceeded all expectations with a Thursday night chez Davies at his villa in Canggu where we had dinner for 15 – ideal preparation for four games in two days. Paddy managed to get the tour kit impounded at customs, which we managed to get released after last minute letters from our GM and the British Council of Indonesia. Three draws and a defeat was a good return for an ageing squad. A warm thanks to the Bali Sports Foundation, particularly Gareth Fitzpatrick, who for the third year has organized all the fixtures and given high quality advice on places to frequent in the evenings. The tourists donated SGD700 from tour fines to the Foundation. There were many outstanding performances week in week out but the following scooped the awards this year. Special mention to the 1st team player of the year, Rob Rickard, who leaves us in January and Mark Saurin who leads from the front in every game. Also, to all those who put in time during the year to make the Football Section what it is – you know who you are so many thanks to you all. Club Player of the Year – Mark Saurin 1st XI player of the Year – Rob Rickard 2nd XI player of the Year – Jan Jeffrey ESPZEN Vets player of the Year – John Williams D2D Vets Player of the Year – Paul Smith Golden Boot – James Morris Young player of the Year – Nikhil Persuad Best Newcomer – Chris Coleman Andrew Marshall Award – Mike Hughes

SPORTS & FITNESS 47 GOLF:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Dick Burton Ever since our 2017 began, it’s been chucking it down. After so many years with so few rain interruptions, it appears that 2017 is the year of disruption. Anyway, with the government land acquisition well on the way to converting our golf to an indoor activity, perhaps we won’t have to worry in years to come. But for the time being we have beefed-up the fixture list and hopefully we will still get plenty of games in.

ORDER OF MERIT 2017

There are changes to the Order of Merit this year. No longer do you need to amass points over the course of the year, two great performances will do. We are giving you 14 chances throughout the year to win a stableford competition. These are played at weekends and weekdays to meet the needs of our Members. Your win qualifies you to enter our Champion of Champions event which will be held at the Els Club in Desaru on Saturday, 9 December 2017. There will be a recce to the Els Club in July or August for those who are left behind this summer.

FIXTURE LIST 2017

After much discussion, a very exciting fixture list has emerged. We have at least 5 inter-club matches with the first against the SLAGS on Chinese New Year Day. We follow that with our Ashes Test against the Singapore Cricket Club, to be held at Keppel Club on 10 March. Already we have over a dozen signed up so if you haven’t put your name down yet, please get in touch. Later in the year we will need to prise back the Colonial Cup from the Tanglin Club and crush the American Club again in our Ryder Cup match. Match format will be 2 Ball Better Ball unless otherwise decided by the match committees. Please take note of two key dates: Club Championship at Sentosa, 21 September 2017 and the following the success of our Bali Golf Tour last year, we are organising Phuket Summer Tour from 1 to 4 June 2017.

MONDAY NIGHT GOLF LEAGUE ORCHID COUNTRY CLUB Is this season our season? The Monday Night Golf League gets underway in February with Steve Settle leading our team. It’s never too late for us to make a substitution if you have a gracious handicap and fancy the run out.

The only time we got close, May 2014! Left to Right; Gavin Kramer, Nic Merrow-Smith, Gary Cunning, Andrew Affleck, Dave Meadows and Deke Pedrick.

JANUARY STABLEFORD SEMBAWANG COUNTRY CLUB AND LAGUNA NATIONAL On back to back days, 11 golfers rolled up at the two courses but sadly only those at Laguna, managed to start and finish the round. Winner of the Laguna Stableford and our first Champion of the 2017, was Paul Nikkel, who also took the Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive prizes. Runner up in the field of 4 was Kenny Cowgill.

RESULTS Event: British Club January Weekday Stableford, Venue: Laguna National Winner: Paul Nikkel, 34 points Runner-up; Kenny Cowgill, 32 points. Nearest the Pin: Paul Nikkel Longest Drive: Paul Nikkel

50 SPORTS & FITNESS SQUASH:

DEMOCRACY IN ACTION By The Boaster and The Crafty Canuck

The Squash Section is pleased that our policy of offering free-flow beer at committee meetings has resulted in a 2017 squash committee of 16 ‘senators’. Andrew Vine is promoted to the newly created co-convenor position. Nick Fell, Andy Greenaway and Chris Mansfield join for 2017 and we say thanks to Jim Mitchell for his efforts last year. Pictured below is the ‘think-tank’ hard at work at the first quarterly committee meeting. They oversee: an international squash tour, four friendlies, participation in two inter-club squash leagues, two annual tournaments, monthly handicap tournaments, a junior squash open house, internal squash boxes, magazine articles, a weight-loss competition and more. Each year we finish with slightly less money than we started with. Senator

Looking at the picture above, one quickly realises that being young or athletic is not required to play squash at The British Club! Drop by courtside on a Tuesday or Thursday night to give it a try. To prove the point that the committee never sleeps, you need look no further than the squash notice board for James’ latest innovation. Over Christmas and the two New Years, instead of our usual box leagues we are playing a MegaBox. Everyone plays everyone – a chance for the lower-ranked squashers such as The Boaster to take on the elite, like the Crafty Canuck, and for those who play a lot of matches to outscore the court-shy. It’s in full swing and going well – thanks James.

SPORTS & FITNESS 51 TENNIS:

TENNIS SECTION REPORT By Mitali Das PARENT CHILD SOCIAL We kicked off 2017 with a fun Saturday afternoon at the annual Parent & Child Social in January. It was the perfect way for parents to end a long holiday period with the kids. We had a few new Members to the Tennis Section meet some ‘old timers’ and new junior Members being able to play with some of our young tennis superstars. All in all, it was a fun day out on the courts.

TENNIS TIPS – STAYING FOCUSED We all know how tough it can be to play any sport in the heat and humidity of Singapore. Add in a bit of competition and the first thing that starts to dwindle are energy levels regardless of how fit one thinks they are. Our focus shifts from the game to how tired we might be feeling or even sometimes other distractions in our lives. In tennis this becomes apparent as we start to literally drag our feet. Our reaction time slows down and our footwork stumbles. A strong opponent can often pick up on this sudden lack of focus and capitalise on it. Suddenly you find yourself down a few games or even a set or two. So, how do we regain our concentration? The best way to stay focused is to be specific about what you are focusing on. And then consider the quality of your performance in relation to that. We can implement specific strategies to regain our concentration. Something that a lot of players do is look at their strings and readjust them. This has a calming effect and is the perfect time to refocus our mind. Also, use the breaks between games to plan out your next strategy instead of dwelling on the previous game. As the saying goes ‘the most important shot in tennis is the next one’. And finally BE THE BALL! This is something we have heard all our coaches say and it gets a bit clichéd but it works. When we start tracking the ball our focal point becomes singular and it’s hard to get distracted.
