PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE
Dear Members, I hope you have had a good start to the Year of the Dog. The Club celebrated the new year in style with many members attending the various events. If you haven’t previously participated, I wholly recommend trying to get up to the Club to join in the celebrations next year, at the start of the year of the Pig. Your Main Committee is working with the management of the Club to establish strategic objectives and set goals for the years ahead. This process will involve input from many and is a fairly significant exercise but one that is important in ensuring clarity and alignment in the overall governance of the Club. My thanks go out to all of those that are contributing to this. I encourage all Members to make full use of the Club. In particular, this month you might like to try the new menus, launched in February, available at The Mountbatten Bar & Grill and at Scores. During March, there will also be menu changes at the other food outlets. Having tried the new culinary offerings, you could also consider using our fantastic gym or joining one of the sports sections. During March we will be celebrating Mothering Sunday at the Club. Originally celebrated as the return to the mother church, Mothering Sunday is a special event for all British mums. Furthermore, other than at the club, we believe that this event is celebrated nowhere else in Singapore. So, sons and daughters (and fathers too) show you appreciation for everything that mothers do and treat them to a great day out and fantastic food at any of our restaurants Every month, the Club hosts a Wine & Gourmet dinner and this month is no exception. Guest Chef, Stephen Zoisl, and wine expert Pip Austin will grace the event on Fri, 23 Mar. With more than twenty years’ experience working in Europe and Singapore, Chef Stephen Zoisl, of Chef’s Table, will be putting together a special pairing menu. Pip Austin, General Manager for Australia and South East Asia from Sileni Estates, will be showcasing various varietals of Sileni Estates’ wines and the combination should be a pleasure and an education.

GM’S MESSAGE CLUB MANAGEMENT
Dear Members, Our Best of British 2018 Events will be kicking off in April this year and will feature monthly until October. See the line-up and dates on page 7. First up will be Faulty Towers – The Dining Experience. Expect chaos as the cast brings you a masterful and hilarious night of dining entertainment. Some tickets are still available so do book early. Plans are well under way to bring you a very special “Best of British” Summer Ball on Saturday 16th June at the Shangri La Hotel. Last year’s Best of British events raised $65,000 for the Gurkha Welfare Trust and Riding for the Disabled Association Singapore. With your help we shall be supporting both of these charities again this year. We have an excellent line-up planned this year so if you’re interested in being one of the sponsors for Best of British 2018, please contact our Marketing team at marketing@britishclub.org.sg St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated on Friday, 16 March at the Club this year with traditional Irish dance and food specials unique to Ireland. Ger Mythen, a native of Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, will also be bringing you a rich and poetic display of Irish music. If you flip through the magazine this month, you’ll notice that we have compiled our Sports classes to give you a better overview of what we offer at the Club. Choose from over 14 different sporting classes ranging from Pilates to Water Aerobics. If you’re looking for something more challenging, sign up for Boot Camp classes as our feared instructor, Rohaizad, conjures up a session to remember. There are also classes for the younger ones like Children’s Ballet and Junior Fitness Group Coaching so do take some time to read through the sports feature. Do not forget to join us for Mothering Sunday, Easter celebrations and Sileni Estates Wine & Gourmet Dinner, all happening in March.

Join us for a unique dinner with Commodore Anthony Morrow CVO, the last Captain of The Royal Yacht Britannia The Royal Yacht Britannia, commissioned in 1954 and de-commissioned in 1997, was used primarily by members of the Royal Family in support of visits to Commonwealth and foreign countries worldwide. From 1976 Britannia was also used around the world for business meetings and conferences, known as ‘Sea Days’ to promote UK business and financial services. These were highly successful occasions and earned billions of pounds for Britain. Britannia was the envy of all our competitors. COMMITTEE IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Interview with
ROGER HARROLD I tend to go with the pack but can swim against the trend.
Q&A 1.
What is your role on the Main Committee? I will have a primary focus on Food and Beverage within a revised Membership Services Structure. I look forward to working with a very dedicated and professional team that already provides a very special Club experience.
2.
What motivated you to join the Main Committee? I was previously a member of the Finance Sub Committee for a year and found that helpful to understand the Club dynamics. I was interested in understanding how the Club functioned and was keen to see how I could contribute to the many aspects that made the Club so successful.
9. Where do you dine outside of the Club? We like the restaurant Brazil at 6th Avenue and the many smaller restaurants along Club Street. 10. What is your favourite movie of all time? The Fifth Element. 11. What is your favourite band/singer? David Bowie with Space Oddity and Heroes. 12. What is your favorite drink? Gin and Tonic.
3. How long have you been a Member at The British Club? 18 years
13. What is your favorite local dish? Laksa – also available on the Verandah!
4. What is your favourite spot at the Club? I enjoy the facilities around the Swimming pool and Mountbatten Bar and Grill restaurant.
14. What is your spirit animal? Fish – I tend to go with the pack but can swim against the trend.
5.
Which is your favourite restaurant and favourite dish at the Club? That’s a tough question as I enjoy all the restaurants and most of the food. If I had to select one, I would say Verandah Cafe with its variety and especially, the wonderful range of Indian food.
15. Tell us something about yourself that nobody knows. I learnt to fly at Seletar Airport.
6.
What do you do when you are not at the Club? I spend most of my time at work and with the family where we go to the cinema or theatre together and enjoy other sites in Singapore.
7. In 3 words, how would you describe the Club? Friendly, Relaxing and Unique. 8. How long have you lived in Singapore? 22 years.

TAX TREATMENT OF CPF IN THE HANDS OF UK RESIDENTS By David Pugh, Director, The Fry Group
In Singapore, the Central Provident Fund (CPF) is a well-respected and solid savings plan for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents (PRs) and can be an important part of retirement planning. But how can you access these contributions when the time comes, and what are the tax implications? For PRs, CPF contributions can be drawn in a couple of ways – either as a drawdown in retirement whilst PR status remains or as a lump sum when PR lapses or is revoked. Whilst it is always possible for someone to lose their PR status whilst still living in Singapore, in many cases people lose their PR status after they leave. This will trigger an option to draw benefits out as a lump sum, or you can elect to draw an annuity style income. If you are UK resident when this happens, it is crucial to understand the UK tax treatment of the funds drawn from your CPF. UK Tax Treatment of CPF income and lump sums In the past, tax on lump sums from pension benefits and provident funds has been exempt (under Extra Statutory Concession (A10)). However, with effect from 6th April 2017, as laid out in the UK Finance Bill, this exemption was abolished and any growth in the value of your CPF from 6 April 2017 will now be subject to Income Tax in full. When you look at the tax treatment of lump sums from overseas pension schemes, there is no mention of anything akin to CPF arrangements, which are considered a bit of a hybrid in UK terms. They are mandatory and Government run, but contain only employer and employee contributions, and no state contribution (aside from the benefits of the tax relief accruing on the contributions). Given the increasingly unfavourable tax position of CPF in UK terms, it is important to understand under what circumstances reliefs are available, such as on the payment of lump sums. Navigating murky waters So, what is the UK tax treatment of such lump sums received from 6th April 2017 in the hands of UK residents? In short, lump sums from CPF will enjoy the following exemptions when it comes to UK taxation: • Any contributions made up to 5th April 2017 will not be taxable upon receipt of the lump sum. The rights up to that point are exempt. • Employee contributions from 6th April 2017 will not be taxable upon receipt of the lump sum. In a nutshell when CPF is paid out as a lump sum to a UK resident, Income Tax is charged on both the employer’s contributions and any growth in value of the scheme investments (from 6th April 2017). No tax-free lump sum would apply as it does not qualify as a relevant non-UK scheme (RNUKS). Seeking advice Any income you collect as part of your pension or retirement is sacred, as a PR your CPF could be an important element and since no one case is the same, you should make sure you understand your individual situation and obligations.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
SIMON LOCKYER AND HIS FAMILY
For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature Simon Lockyer and his family. Simon joined the Club in July 2017. He is the Director, of Business Design for IBM iX, based at IBM Studios Singapore. We find out a bit more about Simon in this exclusive interview.
3) Tell us more about yourself and what you do. I am currently working as Director of Business Design for IBM’s Digital Strategy and Interactive Experience consultancy, IBM iX. At IBM iX, we work at the intersection of strategy, creativity, and technology to help our clients digitally reinvent their businesses. Our clients partner with us to define their digital strategy, to create exceptional experiences, and ultimately to build their businesses, by design. In any spare time not spent at The British Club with my wife Mel and son Jake, I have a passion for flying and hold a Private Pilot’s Licence. I am about to finish my class 2 motorcycle licence and I also enjoy cycling on regular RTIs (round the island).
1) Why did you join The British Club and what impressed you the most? A relaxed haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Good food and good facilities. The curry buffet and the weekly specials are a particular draw for us. We also look forward to meet and network with other professionals from Singapore, UK and beyond. 2) As an expat living in Singapore, what is the one thing you find hardest to adapt to? Well I’ve been here 13 years so I’m probably as adapted as I’m ever going to be. High humidity and the absence of seasons are probably the only things that still need a bit of getting used to.
4) Lastly, tell us the most rewarding part of being in your profession. At IBM iX, we are renegades and realists, experts in pushing boundaries. Working at the forefront of digital technology and digital reinvention of business brings meaningful difference to both clients and end customers. Being part of IBM, we are surrounded by some of the greatest minds in technology; whether we’re helping clients with their overall strategy, helping them use big data and AI to work out who their customers are and what they want, or implementing an entire digital reinvention, there’s never a dull moment. With IBM’s legacy in business reinvention, it’s a great place to do all of that. It’s an incredibly exciting business to be in right now.

Meet our Club Ambassador,
Vincent
Vincent is the Club Ambassador at The British Club. Celebrating his 30th year at The British Club, Vincent is no stranger at the Club. He is happily married with a beautiful daughter and calls himself a family man. Having always been interested in the hospitality industry, he started his career at The Ming Court Hotel (now known as Orchard Parade Hotel) in F&B. Throughout the 15 years working there, he was promoted to F&B Senior Supervisor. However, in a twist of fortune, he was introduced to The British Club in 1988. Vincent started working at The British Club as a Captain at Verandah Café and oversaw the overall operations at the café. In 1989, he was appointed as a Butler and worked alongside with another colleague. In 1992, a Committee Member of The British Club spotted Vincent and saw potential in him. He was then promoted to be the Jackpot Supervisor. During the time that Vincent spent working as the Jackpot Supervisor, traffic increased tremendously, and this was mainly due to his excellent service towards Members and guests. Vincent was appointed as Reception and Membership Relations Officer in 1996. Throughout the 5 years working in this role, he maintained his excellent service towards Members and Guests and created countless Magic Moments. Club tours were his forte as he enjoyed meeting and getting to know new Members at the Club. Vincent was then appointed as the Club Ambassador in 2010 and have been excelling at his role till now. Having contributed to countless Warm Welcomes, Magic Moments and Fond Farewells, he firmly believes in good service with a big smile and this has been evident in him for the past 30 years. Vincent has received the Club’s distinguished award in 2015.

I have a passion for working and have a secret notebook which I use to remember Members name. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to tell you more as it’s top secret.. 4) What is your favorite dish at the Club? Chicken Caesar Salad, healthy and delicious. 5) What is it like to be one of the longest employee at the Club? I feel blessed and honored to be working for this Club and have never regretted any moment in this past 30 years. 6) What is your favorite spot at the Club? You can always find me at the entrance of the lobby, meeting and welcoming Members and guests. 7) Share with us some funny or absurd things that Members have done? In general, Members have not done anything too absurd to leave an impression on my mind. Some Members are more demanding than the others but I always try to give my best. 8) Favorite band or singer? The classic and legendary - Rod Stewart. 9) What is your favorite local dish? It has to be Rojak, sinful but still filled with vegetables. 10) What is the secret to looking young? I’m flattered. I do not explicitly try to do much but I do strive to maintain a positive mindset about everything. Massage, water therapy, lots of exercise and a healthy diet will definitely help as well. 11)
Do you have any advise for the younger staff at the Club? We must continuously strive to give our best service to the Members and guests of this wonderful and prestigious Club. This way, we can ensure that they’re happy and make this place their home away from home. As the 3 Steps of Service states, to provide a warm welcome, create a magic moment, and to leave a fond farewell for all our Members and guests.

SPORTS & FITNESS SWIMMING:
SWIMMING SECTION REPORT
by Rebecca Turley
The swimming section is the largest sports section at The British Club and we are still growing. We start with Learn to Swim, progressing through to the Barracudas squads and then on to our Masters Section. We have a fabulous team of coaches across all swimming levels and they really make a difference to stroke technique and endurance. But it’s not just about the swimming. Through swimming at The British Club, many friendships are formed and at the swim meets, the team spirit is clear to see; team mates screaming at the side of the pool supporting their fellow swimmers and the relay teams working together. One of the nicest things about the swim meets is watching the older members of the Barracudas helping and supporting the younger members who are just starting their competitive swimming journey. For the more ‘experienced’ swimmer, as well as the swimming, the Masters love to socialise. They meet once a month for a club breakfast and many stay on to ‘rehydrate’ after a mid-week training session. It’s a great way to make new friends. The Masters also swim competitively and they have an annual tour to the Gili Islands. So why not come and join us? Learn to Swim Toddler Sessions through to Stroke School Mon to Fri • 4:30pm to 6pm Sat • 9am to 12pm Barracudas Squad Developmental Mon, Wed & Fri • 4:30pm to 5:30pm Sat • 9am to 10am Pre-Squad and Squad Mon & Wed • 5:30pm to 7:30pm Tuesday & Thursday • 5:30pm to 7pm Saturday • 10am to 11:30am Masters Mon, Wed, Fri & Sat • 8am to 9am Tue & Thu • 7:30pm to 8:30pm
