PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Many youngsters (and fathers like me) will soon find themselves panicked at the thought of an impending Mother’s Day and little time, or maybe imagination, to do justice to the person we rely upon most. International Mother’s Day falls on 8 May, which is a Sunday. The Club is offering a variety of options for those of us that want to organise a (surprise) celebratory meal with a 5-course Sunday Lunch at the Mountbatten Room and buffets at The Windsor Arms and Verandah Terrace. These events will no doubt be popular so please book early to avoid disappointment. I’d again like to welcome all our new Members to the Club and I encourage you to approach our Member Relations team for any information about the Club and any of the social or sporting activities and events that are on offer. Each month, we hold an evening cocktail event that allows Members to meet new people and make new connections. The evening is open to all Members and I encourage people to come along and try it out but I especially look forward to meeting new Members at the next Members Connect Night, which will be held on Thursday, 5 May.

THE BRITISH CLUB

WHY YOU NEED A WILL By David Pugh – The Fry Group

David Pugh has been living and working in South East Asia for more than eight years and is responsible for The Fry Group’s activities in the region. David specialises in inheritance tax strategy, pension planning and portfolio management. He is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and a Board Member of the British Chamber of Commerce, Singapore.

In England and Wales there are rules in place which govern how an estate is distributed for those without a valid Will in place. If you are married with children and die without a Will, the first £250,000 and the personal chattels, will pass to your spouse. The remainder will be divided into two, with one share passing outright to your spouse and the other to your children. Previously the share to the surviving spouse passed into trust, from which they would receive the income during their lifetime and the capital preserved for the children on their death. Whilst the current rules simplify matters by removing the trust structure, for those with children from a previous marriage, circumstances could become complicated. There is now the possibility that a greater portion of your estate will move away from your children than under the old rules – if the surviving spouse is not minded to benefit the stepchildren. Equally those that are separated but not divorced could find their estranged spouse receiving a greater proportion of their estate than their children. For co-habitants, if an unmarried individual dies without a Will, their partner receives nothing! Where there are no children the surviving spouse receives the entire estate. In addition to ensuring your assets pass to your intended beneficiaries there are other reasons for completing a Will: 1.

To protect funds against spendthrift beneficiaries or against divorce/bankruptcy.

2.

To appoint guardians to minor children; if no guardians are named the children may be placed in foster care until

the courts/local authorities decide who should look after them.

3.

To appoint someone you want to handle your estate (an executor).

4.

To avoid Inheritance Tax – if you rely on the intestacy rules this could lead to an immediate charge if funds pass to y

our children.

5.

To indicate your funeral wishes.

6.

To provide guidance on whom you would like to look after any pets you own; for example family, friends or perhaps

an animal sanctuary.

Whatever your situation, recent rule changes underline the importance of making a will to make sure your wishes are taken into account upon your death. Furthermore, if you reside in Singapore with assets in Singapore you should consider having a Singapore Will in place. Not only will this speed up the probate process for your Singapore assets but it will also speed up the guardianship wishes you may have in place for your children.

At The Fry Group we have extensive experience in Will writing, identifying Inheritance Tax exposures and working with you to come up with sensible and workable solutions.

BRITISH CLUB CRAFT GROUP RAISES MONEY FOR THE RIDING FOR THE DISABLED ASSOCIATION SINGAPORE

On Wednesday, 9 March several members of the Craft group paid an inspirational visit to the Riding for The Disabled Association Singapore. The purpose of the visit was to present a cheque for $3,000. This was raised by the ladies of the Craft group who throughout last year made various items that were sold at The British Club Christmas Bazaar. We raised a total of $5,800, the generosity of the Club raised this to $6,000 making it possible to donate $3,000 to each of the Club’s chosen charities. Riding for the Disabled Singapore is entirely reliant on donations. It receives no government funding. While we were there, a school for Autistic children were having a lesson. Seeing their faces when riding was a very emotional experience. Riding benefits the disabled children and adults in many ways, it helps strengthen muscles, balance, co-ordination and improves social skills. They are always in need of volunteers, if you can spare a small amount of time please contact them on Tel: +65 6250 0176 for more details. You do not need to be an experienced horse enthusiast as full training will be given. They currently have 21 horses all of which have been donated, the oldest of these is Fraggle who has reached the ripe old age of 32. All the horses are very well cared for, which of course comes at a cost. I would ask all of us British Club Members to dig deep and support this very worthwhile cause. Compiled by Maggie Ashman, Craft Convenor and Jenny Butler.

The Craft Group meets every Tuesday at the TreeTops lounge, between 10am and 3pm. We welcome new Members so please come and join us. For enquiries, email Maggie Ashman, Craft Ladies convenor at mandpashman@yahoo.co.uk

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member In The Spotlight, we are delighted to feature a very well-known and well-liked local artiste, Amy Cheng. Amy joined the Club in 2014. She is currently the Creative Director for ACT 3 Theatrics.

1) What is the most rewarding aspect of your career? As an actress/host and the occasional jazz crooner for more than a decade, one of the rewarding aspect is the connection made with my audiences. The other rewarding aspect is, that I can share my experiences and skills as a performer, with special needs children and youths as a Drama Educator (ACT 3 Theatrics). 2) As an artiste, which role did you enjoy most and why? As Karen Tay, from Growing Up, a local English series which ran for 7 seasons. Though I joined only at the 4th season, the main cast who were there throughout, immediately made me feel like part of the team. I gained hands-on experience in acting through this role. It was also my first big break in TV acting. 3) What keeps you occupied when you’re not at work? I enjoy being with my family, having a good meal or just watching movies together. The Harry Potter movie series has lately, been our favourite weekend movie! 4) What brings you to The British Club? My uncle used to be a member of The British Club when I was a teenager. So sometimes, we would have meals with him there. I remember my 18th birthday was celebrated by the pool at The British Club! So when we moved to the West, I decided to check it out again as it is quite near our home. 5) What do you love most about The British Club? With all the facilities available as well as activities that are being organized, it really meets the needs of our family, where there is something for everyone. Hubby and I enjoy the cosy ambience of the Windsor Arms as well as the elegant dining at Mountbatten Room, whilst our older boy enjoys the gym, especially with the recent revamp. Our younger boy has been taking swimming lessons for a year at the Club too. It is cosy, personal, with value for money. Most of all, I feel there is the spirit to evolve, without losing its core British traditions. Something my husband and I appreciate!

“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan VESAK DAY Vesak Day is celebrated by Buddhists worldwide on the full moon of the sixth lunar month, this year on Saturday, 21 May. The holiest day in the Buddhist calendar commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha. Founded in India in the sixth century BC, there are many devotees in this part of the world who adhere to the teachings of the Buddha or ‘enlightened one’. Vegetarian food is usual on Vesak Day and devotees may be seen at temples with offerings of candles, flowers and incense-sticks. Alms will be presented for monks. Some followers will pour perfumed water over statues of the Buddha, while birds might be set free from cages as an act of compassion. Flags in Buddhist colours of blue, yellow, red, white and orange may be seen fluttering from temples. Visitors are always welcome; it is customary to remove shoes before entering and modest attire is necessary. Be aware that, if introduced to a monk, they do not shake hands with or touch females; a smile and gentle nod of the head are in order. The same applies when greeting a Buddhist nun. One should refrain from touching items and not take photographs within a temple, without permission. Vesak Day celebrations may be observed at the large Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, Bright Hill Road, Bishan, and at the Temple of a Thousand Lights, Race Course Road, Little India, as well as around the island. At their test centre, the watches are strapped to the wrist of a crash-test dummy and shot out of the cockpit. Enduring forces of between 12G and 30G in the process. SPORTS & FITNESS GOLF:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Paul Nikkel & Nic Merrow-Smith NEWS FROM THE GREENS We had our best ever turnout for an inter-club match on 10 March when we played host to 6 other clubs at Raffles Country Club. Our team of 15, took on the might of the Singapore Recreation Club, Serangoon Garden Country Club and the Eurasian Association, who in previous matches had challenged for honours. We were greeted by a perfect morning; mist rising off the water, sun breaking through the trees, as 100 golfers made their way out onto the Lake Course. Our team performed really well across all three divisions, taking 4th place on the day. This was by far our best showing in this team event, capped with some great individual performances. Jonathan Woodward returned to claim one of the nearest the pin prizes, sponsored by Ria Bintan, whilst James Morris (39 points,) John Hancock and Nina Sung (32 points) and Mike Ashburn (37 points) were the top BC performers in their respective divisions. On behalf of the Golf Section, our thanks go to Lay Chi, Holly and Kelly in the sports office for coordinating the event and making it a great morning for everyone. Our thanks go to everyone else who made the event a success including beverage sponsors FitLine, nearest the pin sponsors Ria Bintan, lucky draw sponsors Fitline and Spring City Golf & Lake Resort, and Beat the Pro and Hole-in-One prize sponsors, Art Index International (Singapore)

END OF AN ERA AT JCC: MARCH STABLEFORD REPORT

by Paul Nikkel

Nine golfers, including two juniors teed it up on a bright morning for the March Stableford at Jurong Country Club. With plenty of water and a bit of wind to start, most golfers struggled on the first few holes. By the time we got to the first closest to the pin hole, (our 8th hole of the day), golfers were in the groove with Simon Bird dropping one to within 5 feet and sinking the birdie as well. The second nine was hotter and slower, but with less water hazards, scores improved. Mark Nikkel landed a seven iron to 15 feet to win the second closest to the pin. In the end, Paul Nikkel prevailed with 37 stableford points, followed by Charles Pierron in second with 35. It was a great day and it is a shame that such a pleasant and well maintained course will be levelled to make way for the new high speed rail hub.

From left to right; Stableford winner Paul Nikkel with Mark Nikkel (nearest the pin) and Davy Yeo.

From left to right; Colin Allcard with Abhijit Patwardhan and Stableford runner-up, Charles Pierron.

TENNIS:

TOP TIPS AND SOCIAL SEASON Edited by Julia Fenton COACHES TIPS: the One Degree Error – from Director of Tennis Darren Moore Next time you are aiming for the baseline and your ball goes out; don’t give yourself such a hard time. Instead, take a moment to appreciate why tennis is such a difficult game by understanding the One Degree Error: Imagine you are standing in the middle of one side of the tennis court with your racquet facing straight towards the net and are aiming to hit straight down the court to a player standing opposite you: If your racquet is turned by just 5 degrees from its original position the ball will be out! Basically, for every one degree of error of misplacement your ball will end up almost 0.5m away from where you had wanted to place it! It’s also worth remembering that the speed of the incoming ball just before contact in recreational tennis is approximately 10 m/s (36 km/hr) and the speed of the racquet is around the same. In summary, good reasons why the game takes years of patient practice to achieve good results.

TENNIS SECTION SUMMER SOCIAL: Saturday, 7 May – Rooftop Don’t miss the social event of the season! Come dressed as your favourite 70’s film/TV character or rock star; think Charlies Angels, Starsky & Hutch, Rocky, Columbo, David Bowie… to enjoy a retro evening of nostalgic fun. Claim a hot prize for the best dressed tennis team! There will be cocktails at 7.30pm followed by a buffet at 8.00pm and dancing from 9.00pm. Tickets are available at $65 for section members and $75 for nonsection members. Contact the Pro-Shop to order.

I first joined The British Club Taekwondo section in October 2014 and have been thrilled to see great progress in my abilities- true testament to fantastic training and inspiring instructors. I have had the opportunity to participate in National tournaments and to train with a dedicated team of students and instructors. I enjoyed the training sessions so much that I just had to involve my family, too! – Ana

SWIMMING:

SECTION REPORT By Helen Tynan We have had another busy month in the swimming section. Our newly designed Barracudas swimwear is now available in the pro shop, Our swimming honour boards are now installed by the pool. We have some new barracudas T shirts coming soon and we have had some great results in the recent Neptune league competition and the Junior National Age Group Championships. The new British Club swimwear is selling well in the pro shop, please make sure you purchase your new barracudas swimwear, whilst stocks last. The swimming section recently purchased 3 swimming honour boards, which have been fitted by the pool. These boards allow us to show off our end of year ‘Rookie of the Year’, ‘Barracuda of the Year’ and Team Captains. We are in the throws of finalizing a new Barracudas T Shirt design for all our swimmers. The T Shirt will be made of a dry fit material to allow our swimmers to keep dry and comfortable. Watch this space for when the T Shirts are available. In our recent Neptune league competition at The Tanglin Club we gathered a total of 19 Gold’s, 21 Silvers and 8 Bronzes out of a total of 59 events. On top of that, our swimmers broke a total of 5 Neptune league records (both individual and team events)! For the first time this year our Total Swimming coaches entered a few of our Barracuda swimmers to represent The British Club at the National Time Trials and the Singapura Finance 47th SNAG (Singapore National Age Group championships). This was held at the OCBC Aquatics Stadium and gave our swimmers a chance to compete against some of the best swimmers in Singapore. Well done to Aryaan Din, Kamran Din, Megan Hume, Bethany Turley & Connor Whelan. We are very proud of all our swimmers and we will continue to encourage them towards excellence in their training.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY The annual British Club swimming gala will be held a little earlier in our swim calendar this year. We are planning to host this event on Sunday, 12 June. Additionally we will be holding a mini British Club swim gala for our Learn To Swim members on Saturday, 8 October. This year the Barracudas end of season awards evening will be on Friday, 17 June. We will be having a movie night by the pool with a full BBQ for all our barracudas. Make sure you sign up for this event nearer the time and please save all these dates in your diaries. As always, please email us at swimming@britishclub.org.sg if you have any questions, queries or new ideas for the swimming sections.

SPORTS & FITNESS SQUASH:

TOURNAMENT TORMENT By Andrew Vine & The Boaster They used to say that the sun never sets on the British Empire. Nor does it on the annual calendar of The British Club Squash Tournaments. These days we seem to race from one tournament to the other throughout the year. This year has been made especially tight because of last year’s haze which literally choked the life out of our Handicap Tournament which then had to be rescheduled for the beginning of 2016. So off we go … • Feb – Mar 2015 Annual Handicap Tournament; • Apr – May 2016 Closed Club Championship; • Aug – Sep 2016 Veterans and Grand Masters Competition; • Oct – Nov 2016 Annual Handicap Tournament. Pity, then, the tournament secretary (yours truly) who finds himself continually in action. Organising the competitions is not particularly hard in itself. The tough bit seems to be getting grown men, responsible for multi-million dollar businesses, to use the phone or email to arrange their games! Despite all the notices, the announcements, and spoon-fed emails to all the pairs of players, we get the inevitable dramas as deadlines get breached, as well as a fascinating array of lame excuses; “Been travelling.” “Oh, is there a deadline?” “Sorry, I hurt my toe.” “The wife just had a baby.” “I need a week to recover from jet-lag!” Being too harsh and kicking people out would go against what our section is all about: we are here to enjoy playing squash, rather than not playing. How do I manage it? What does it take to keep these cats herded? Well, the right balance of flexibility with a no- BS approach, a dash of diplomacy, a good dose of creativity and the patience of a saint. OK, I admit I completely fail on the patience front, but somehow it all manages to come together and importantly we all come out smiling! What should be abundantly clear, with tournaments as a highlight, plus around 4-5 boxes during the year, 3 local club friendlies, plus the SSRA and Cosmo leagues … this is an incredibly vibrant section! Sadly the aging bodies don’t always keep pace with it. To finish, a quick review of the 2015 tournaments: • • • •

Club Championship: Handicap: Veterans (O-45): Grand Masters (O-55):

Charlie Thomas (6 times champion), runner-up Ben Carpenter Charlie Thomas (9 times champion), runner-Up Showbhik Kalra Simon Bird, runner-up Craig Telmer Mansoor Tirmzi, runner-up Raymond Stopper

In the Handicap, the dominance of Charlie Thomas remains the perennial challenge. Quite remarkably, while each year we turn the screw a little bit tighter with his handicap, Charlie finds a way to rise to the challenge. God help us when he qualifies for the Veterans too! Well done to Showbhik who again posed a serious challenge, audaciously taking the first game only to see Charlie knuckle down to win 3-1. The Plate final was contested by Arron Holmes and one of our newest members, Martin Huxley, with Martin coming out with the win.

CRICKET:

BRITISH CLUB V ANZA SATURDAY, 12 MARCH 2016 The Singapore equivalent of the Ashes – ANZA against BC, but this series is more important! The British Club are the current holders of the Commonwealth Cup and determined to hold on to it this season. The 5 match series got off to a bad start with ANZA winning the first match so BC was determined to level the series in the second match. ANZA won the toss and decided to bat first. With a dry, fast outfield, the objective for BC was to keep the runs down to a minimum. Paul Twine (Twiney) and Shane Bignell got us off to a good start with Twiney excelling in his 5 overs, conceding only 16 runs, but the BC philosophy of giving every player the chance to bowl at least one over was going to play it’s part. At the halfway stage of the ANZA innings, they had racked up 111 runs for the loss of only one wicket. We needed to slow down the run rate and start to take wickets. Paul McNee chipped in with a couple of wickets and holding them to just 26 runs off his 5 overs, but the scoreboard kept turning over and at the end of the ANZA innings they had scored a total of 216 runs. The run chase was on! Requiring a run rate of over 7 an over, BC openers Ross Marsh and Simon Bignell got us off to a solid start, scoring at a run a ball they moved us on to 53 before the loss of the first wicket in the 9th over. The runs kept coming, but always a little behind the required rate. Todd Buck (31) and Twiney (30) had excellent knocks and both had to retire when they reached the maximum runs allowed. Despite a last ditch effort, BC fell short of the required total scoring a total of 209 off their 30 overs, 7 runs short of the ANZA total in an exciting game that could have gone either way. The third game in the 5 match series is now a must win for BC.
