2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE
Dear Members, Many youngsters (and fathers like me) will soon find themselves panicked at the thought of another (yes, another) impending Mother’s Day and little time, or maybe imagination, to do justice to the person we rely upon most. International Mother’s Day falls on 14 May, which is a Sunday. The Club is offering a variety of options for those of us that want to organise a (surprise) celebratory meal at any of the restaurant outlets. These events will no doubt be popular so please book early to avoid disappointment. I’d again like to welcome all our new Members to the Club. It’s an exciting time to become a Member with the Best of British celebrations fast approaching. Before you have the opportunity to sample the Best of British, I encourage you to approach our Member Relations team for any information about the Club and any of the social or sporting activities and events that are on offer. Each month, we hold an evening cocktail event that allows Members to meet new people and make new connections. The evening is open to all Members but I especially look forward to meeting new Members at the next Members Connect Night. Easter is behind us and summer is on the way. There is no better time to get back into shape and refocus on your fitness and sports. The Club has excellent facilities and very active sports sections that cater to all levels of commitment and performance. The list of sections and convenors is shown in this magazine and Lay Chi, our Sports Manager, and the individual section convenors are available to answer your questions and guide you on what is available. For those who are looking to re-commit to their resolutions, we have a slew of new sports programmes to cater to a variety of fitness levels and age groups. For our more senior Members, we have introduced a Stepby-Step Fitness Class aimed at getting Members who are aged 65 and over to be more active. On Friday, 12 May, the Club will host a special premium gin tasting session at the Windsor Arms with one of the most well-known and highly regarded gins, East London No. 1. There will also be special prices for bottles sold on the night. And if you have not booked for the Best of British events, don’t wait till it’s too late, visit us at www.britishclub.org.sg to secure your seats now! DAMIAN R. HILLS President

Dear Members, I want to wish everyone in the Club a very happy Labour Day. Here’s to a better month of May ahead for all of us! We are now into our fifth year of the Best of British Celebrations. It simply gets better every year. The Best of British is now a two-week extravaganza spanning from 4 to 17 June. Expect our signature events like the QEII Cup at the Singapore Turf Club starting on Sunday, 4 June, a Commonwealth themed wine and gourmet dinner on Friday, 9 June, Ladies Luncheon and Cooking Demonstration on Tuesday, 13 June, the ever exciting and nerve-racking Bingo Night on Wednesday, 13 June, and of course the not to be missed Comedy Night happening on Friday, 16 June. Something new to look forward to this year is our Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli show, with 2 West End stars – Emma Dears and award-winning Lucy Williamson. Don’t miss the early bird tickets for our Grand Finale which will end on Friday, 19 May 2017. So do grab those tickets early before they get snapped up. Log on to www.britishclub.org.sg to book online. As a special mention, in line with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Sapphire Jubilee, we have put together a never before seen Membership offer for the first 65 sign-ups. Apart from a special membership sign-up price, these first 65 will also receive a special commemorative £5 coin, beautifully presented in a specially commissioned serialised package. It is truly an honour to celebrate these 65 wonderful years since Her Majesty acceded the throne. As the holidays come ever so nearer, should you wish to go overseas and travel, do take the opportunity to visit some of our reciprocal clubs, located all around the world. Going to a reciprocal club not only maximises the use of your Club Membership, it also opens doors to places you would otherwise not be able to visit or explore. Every month, our Club magazine features a different reciprocal club, so do keep a lookout for this month’s feature – you won’t be disappointed. I’m sure we have many Members who wish to use the Club’s various marketing tools to promote messages or advertisements via the Club’s numerous platforms. Our marketing team is always available and on hand to answer any requests or enquiries that you may have. Reaching out to our Members has never been easier nor more effective, so do contact them at marketing@ britishclub.org.sg to discuss any possibilities that are available for you. Additionally, if you are thinking of planning or organising a party or private event, the Club’s catering team offers premium and bespoke catering services for the discerning individual. We also offer outside catering services to any venue of your choice. For more details or enquiries, please feel free to contact the banquet team at banquetsales@britishclub.org.sg. Have an absolutely fabulous May and see you at the Club soon.

RAMADAN
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During this holy month, Muslims worldwide will fast by abstaining from eating and drinking daily, from approximately 5.00am to approximately 7.00pm, as an act of penance. This year, Ramadan is from Saturday, 27 May to Saturday, 24 June, following which the festival of Hari Raya Puasa will be celebrated. By observing Ramadan, Muslims are reminded of the suffering of others. Most importantly, individuals will go through the experience of self-restraint and spiritual enhancement. Reading of the Koran (Islamic holy book) and praying are required. Fitrah (monetary donations) are given to mosques, to be used to assist the less fortunate. During interaction with Muslim friends, neighbours and employees during Ramadan, one should be mindful of fasting requirements and appreciate that those who fast tend to have less energy than usual. Upon hearing the evening call to prayer by the muezzin (mosque official), it is customary to break one’s fast by sipping water and consuming glucose-rich dates - which will be seen in abundance in supermarkets during this month. Favourite dishes for the evening meal (iftar) during Ramadan include bubur masjid (rice porridge), otak-otak (grilled spicy fish-cake wrapped in banana leaves), curries, nasi lemak (coconutflavoured rice with fried fish, egg and vegetable), nasi goreng (fried rice), kueh lopis (glutinous-rice cake covered with coconut and sugar), biscuits, fresh fruit and other energy-providing food. BUDGET, BREXIT AND BEYOND By Martin Rimmer, Tax Manager On 8 March Philip Hammond gave his first Budget address since becoming Chancellor. At times hilarious, at other times savage but at all times circumspect, he appeared to leave an awful lot unsaid. Amazingly, the word ‘Brexit’ did not fall from his lips even once, so I am left with the impression that this Budget was merely a quiet prelude to what could be a much weightier statement in the autumn. But that doesn’t mean he said nothing. In these uncertain times one might have expected measures to reassure the global business community. Alas no. The drop in Corporation Tax to 15%, I had hoped for wasn’t forthcoming, though he did restate the intention to reduce it to 17% during the current Parliament. There had been talk of a potential easing in the new accelerated rates of Stamp Duty. Sadly this also turned out to be speculation. We were disappointed by the decision to reduce the Dividend Allowance from GBP 5,000 to GBP 2,000 from 6 April 2018. This, together with big increases in Business Rates will be a bitter pill for the many businesses upon which the success of UK Plc rests. There was a surprise announcement to impose a new 25% Income Tax levy on what the Treasury believes to be the ‘abusive use’ of Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) unless the scheme and the pensioner are resident in the same EEA country. This was one of those unsettling ‘from midnight tonight’ moves, though details are now emerging about one or two exceptions to the rule. It is all a little bit odd, as this is one of the more strictly regulated parts of tax code and it is hard to see how following the plain letter of the law can be abusive. Beyond this a raft of other changes came into force on 6 April 2017, such as: • The way in which tax relief is given for the costs of finance in respect of most residential property letting accounts is changing. • A new but limited Inheritance Tax allowance is being phased in which could reduce Inheritance Tax by up to GBP 140,000 for a couple if certain conditions are met. • The exemption from Inheritance Tax enjoyed by non-UK domiciled individuals who own UK residential property through a non-UK company ceases entirely. • The rules for the taxation of UK resident non-domiciled persons also change. Of most concern is a change in the tax position of ‘formerly domiciled residents’ - a person who was born in the UK with a Domicile of Origin in the UK and has since adopted a Domicile of Choice overseas. If such a person becomes resident in the UK from 6 April 2017, all of the tax benefits associated with their non-domiciled status are lost. Furthermore, if they had sought to protect their foreign assets from Inheritance Tax by passing them into an Excluded Property Trust, they now find that those assets fall into the ‘relevant property’ regime, which imposes Inheritance Tax charges when assets leave the trust and at every 10th anniversary of the trust as well as the standard death tax charge of 40%. Ouch. If you, like many others, have taken a domicile of choice in Singapore and continue to live here and intend to do so permanently, nothing has changed. However, life can throw ‘curve balls’ and even the best of intentions can change over time. It would be a tremendous shame to find yourself back in the UK, potentially in your old age, and to have to find new ways of planning for Inheritance Tax. Time might be short and energy may be lacking. On a related point, if you have obtained a domicile ruling from HM Revenue & Customs, a recent case involving a very high profile person with a Hong Kong domicile of choice has confirmed that the Revenue is no longer bound by that earlier conclusion in the context of future investigations. So, it is wise to investigate other forms of Inheritance Tax planning in advance which can provide a tax planning safety net if your Domicile claim lapses for some reason. As ever, forewarned is forearmed.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 21
MEMBER IN THE
SPOTLIGHT
For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to present Michael Gronow and his family.
Michael joined the Club one year ago, in May 2016. He currently runs his own photography business called Michael Gronow Photography based out of Singapore.
1) How did you come to hear about The British Club, and what was one of the main factors for joining us?
We’ve always known of The British Club and have talked about joining over the past few years but decided to take the plunge last year after hearing one of their ads on the radio. I’ve lived in Singapore for over 11 years now and have never been one for getting too homesick. However, my son, James, is growing up now and we thought it would be a good idea for all of us to have a home away from home where we can relax and play. We were impressed with the number of events the Club organises for both children and adults. We recently attended our second wine dinner at The Mountbatten Room and thoroughly enjoyed it!
2) As an expat living in Singapore, what is the one thing you find hardest to adapt to here?
To start off with it was the heat and humidity but I would say I’ve gotten used to it now. Besides that it is very easy to live here and my wife, Melina, is Singaporean so she has helped me integrate and find my way around. I do find that some food items are expensive or hard to find here though. I travel to the UK at least once a year and always end up bringing back a big stash of decent teabags!
3) Is being a photographer a rewarding experience? It’s an extremely rewarding experience. I’ve been photographing families in Singapore for over 6 years now and the satisfaction you get from taking a great family photo never fades, especially when you see their reaction the first time they see it. There are not many jobs that give you a chance to create something that brings happiness to people for years to come.
Before starting this business I worked in the finance industry for 12 years where the hours and stress can be quite tough. Now I am my own boss and the work/life balance is much better. I get to spend a lot more time with James than I would have had I stayed where I was.
4) Tell us an interesting or funny experience you’ve had in your line of work.
The funniest times usually occur when I’m photographing toddlers because they usually have no interest in being photographed! I’ve picked up a few tricks over the years to get some great shots of them though. One little boy was having so much fun that he kept running to me and hugging me which again made it tricky photographing him.
One of my most memorable sessions at the studio was photographing four generations of women from the same family (from new-born to great-grandmother). I asked the women to dress in black and then photographed them all looking down at the baby. It’s still one of my favourite shots and is currently hanging up in the studio.
4) Lastly, when you are not working, you can be found at…
Erm….at The British Club! James has just started having swimming lessons twice a week at the Club, which gives me a chance to work out at the gym. Then we have a relaxing meal at The Verandah Cafe together. SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT

Christine is the Chief Winemaker, involved in all stages of winemaking, and manages the businesses of Gladstone Vineyard. As one of the only three Scottish women winemakers in the world, Christine ‘fell’ into the wine industry after a happenstance visit to Gladstone Vineyard with her husband, David one spring weekend in 1995. In February 1996, Christine and David Kernohan took over the vineyard. Both born in Glasgow, Scotland, they immigrated to New Zealand in the late 1970s with their young daughters Lyn and Gail. SPORTS & FITNESS 47 FOOTBALL:
FOOTBALL REPORT
By James Morris
Champions! On a hot, sultry day at the PSA Keppel Pitch, The British Club 1st XI won the EFL title with a thumping 10-2 win against old friends and rivals Hibernians FC. Inspired by a trio of Saurins (Jacob returning from University) and a guest appearance from last year’s first team player of the year, Rob Rickard, Captain Mark Saurin’s dreams were realised even after a slow start. It has been a memorable season with real commitment and quality throughout the season and I am sure the celebrations will do the effort and occasion justice. As the 1st XI remained in Singapore to play what turned out to be the championship winning league game, 22 players from our 2nd XI and Vets teams joined forces to go on tour to Phnom Penh. A tour destination that holds many happy memories for past and present Club tourists, especially with Sok Sabay, Raffles brunch, eating tarantulas and games in the old national stadium against Bayon Wanderers. So it was in fact business as usual. The plan to have a quiet Thursday night did not materialise, nor did the plan to abstain from drinking a beer prior to the 8.00pm fixture on Friday night against Bayon Wanderers Vets. Then again this was the tour, and a mixture of sightseeing, pre-match rehydrating and relaxing meant we were in top shape for the first game as kick off quickly caught up with us.
1st team players celebrating after the title-winning match
When the opposition arrived they did not really look like Vets (compared to us anyway) and we thought we might have been duped, especially after they went 1-0 up. However, we went on to play some surprisingly good football with some excellent passing and we regularly tested their keeper. Paul Smith in goal for us was also having a superb game with a number of saves. Jan Jeffrey got an equaliser heading in a John Williams ball into the top corner, making it 1-1. Then a thunderbolt strike from Robbie Allen (our returning ex-Convenor from New York) put us into the lead at half-time. 2-1 to The British Club. A turning point came when Rich English took the referee’s whistle in the second half and refused to award The British Club a stonewall penalty!? Big tour fine followed! The opposition stole momentum and fought back into a 4-2 lead. A deflected strike from Paddy Flynn found the back of the net and at 4-3 there was a frantic seven minutes still to play with chances at both ends. Unfortunately, Bayon got a goal in stoppage time and we went for beers a little disappointed that we did not get a result but upbeat given some of the passing football that we played. Man of the Match candidates included Stewart Frame, Andy Petyt (our roaming HK tourist), Jim Rowan, Alan Jope, Nick Challoner and Robin Thuillier. Game number two on Saturday against Bayon Wanderers mixed 1st /2nd XI was always going to be a tough fixture but the enormous pitch probably made it worse. Nevertheless, we managed to get to half-time on equal terms with Paul Smith again having an inspired game with the gloves. 1-1. Paddy Flynn achieved something remarkable scoring and taking the much coveted top scorer on tour accolade. With the opposition putting on their strongest team for the second half and with The British Club rapidly running out of fit and sober players, Bayon won the second half convincingly in the end. Man of the Match and Player of the Tour was that fine athlete of a man, Paul Smith. If anyone wants some tips on general fitness and keeping agile as a goalkeeper please pop down the Lazy Lizard any time after 4.00pm on a midweek evening. Morale very quickly picked up on hearing that BCFC 1st XI had smashed their league opponents 10-2 and had been crowned deserved Equatorial Premier League champions. To celebrate this update we had some more beer. Dinner followed at the beautifully situated Foreign Correspondents Club and we saw speeches told, poems recited and ruthless Judge John Rennie administering some fines which helped to raise US$700 dollars for local kids charity Sok Sabay. Superb effort. Flights back on the Sunday but there was just enough time for us to sneak in a delicious lunch at Raffles Hotel, Phnom Penh. Well done all who took part in another thoroughly enjoyable and memorable British Club tour. (Rich English - tour correspondent) Back in Singapore, the 2nd team are having a rich vein of form and surged to the top of the table beating Gaelic Feckers 4-2. This was without inspirational Clarky, who was off tackling Everest on his 60th birthday (see photo - albeit most thought he was on a lifelong pilgrimage taking on the values and lifestyle of a Sherpa!). The two Vets teams continue to battle for victories with Nick Challenger’s D2D team pulling off a series of wins to cement a mid-table position. Overall, it was a great month of football and it was fabulous to see so many ex-Members joining us both on tour and when passing through Singapore.

SPORTS & FITNESS 49 GOLF:
GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Dick Burton What heroes we have in the Golf Section, securing a draw against the Singapore Cricket Club after our Convenor announced he was off to Vietnam to play his golf, leaving a depleted team to fend for themselves; a match down without even teeing off! But a sterling effort from Captain Kenny Cow-gill and the lads gave us three wins to two further losses, to halve the match. I heard there were desperate fight backs, walk-overs and landslide losses to birdie machines! A great day was had at Keppel Club with plenty of camaraderie and revelry.
Bala Supramaniam and Kenny Cowgill share the spoils; until the next time!
Mike Humphreys receives one of the many Nearest the Pin prizes bestowed upon our team.
Union Jacks or Plus Fours? Greg Atack and Richard Holloway lead the way up the Keppel Catwalk
Our next Inter-club game is the Colonial Cup, a three way match against the Tanglin and American Clubs on 17 May. To stand any chance of nicking back the trophy from the Tanglin, we need to field a full team, so please, please sign up. Next up, our apologies to the golfers who signed up for the RCC Sunday game in March. We were hopeful of being given the two flights we needed up until the Wednesday before but alas it wasn’t to be. We will see whether we can schedule the game another Sunday in June. We did have a Stableford game on the greens at RCC on the Friday, where Charles Pierron picked up his first win of the season with Gary Donaghy taking the runner-up spot whilst Gary and Bill Christie picked up Nearest the Pins prizes.
RCC; Gary Donaghy collects a Nearest the Pin prize.
Charles Pierron qualifies for the Champion of Champions with his win at RCC.
Finally, a quick reminder on the June Phuket Tour; which is now confirmed for 23 to 26 June at La-guna, taking advantage of the Hari Raya holiday on Monday, 26 June. The June Stableford will be played on tour although it’s likely that we will look to play that second Stableford in Singapore earlier in June, making up for the cancellation of the March event.

SWIMMING SECTION REPORT
by Tory Morris & Helen Tynan
March was a very busy month for the Swimming Section. We were delighted to send a few of our Barracudas to the Singapore National age group championships in both the Junior (8-12 years) and Senior (13years and over) competitions. Our first Neptune League meet of the year took place on 24 March and we were very pleased to host our first Learn to Swim British Club Gala on Saturday, 25 March. The Singapore National Age Group championships are a yearly competition held at the Singapore OCBC Aquatics centre. To participate in this event swimmers had to meet the QET (qualifying entry times) for their respective events/age group. We had five Barracudas who were able to compete this year and they all managed to achieve personal bests. A huge congratulations to James Butcher, Francesca Masi & Millie Tynan for their efforts in the Juniors event and to Seren Price and Bethany Turley for their efforts in the Seniors event. A massive thank you to Coach Enrico and Coach Dawn for their help, support and time during the Nationals. Let’s hope we can give more Barracudas the chance to go next year.
The first Neptune League swim meet of the year was held at the Tanglin Club on Friday, 24 March. It was an evening event from 4 – 7pm. The teams who participated in this league were the Swiss Sharks, the Singapore Island Country Club, the Tanglin Club, the Hollandaise Club and The British Club. We took approximately 40 swimmers from the Barracudas to represent The British Club at this event. Although the Barracuda squad was low in numbers due to illnesses we still managed to produce some great results across the group. The Barracudas managed to receive 26 gold medals, 23 silver medals and 6 bronze medals overall which is a great start for us in the Neptune League 2017. On top of this we had 3 Barracudas who broke Neptune League meet records. Jeremy Williams broke the Boys 66-metre backstroke record with a time of 48.29, Alyshia Edwards broke the Girls 66-metre breaststroke record with a time of 55.54 and Jade Williams broke the 66-metre butterfly record with a time of 56.97, congratulations to all three of them. As always, a big thanks to our Total Swimming coaches whom give us so much support at these events.
THE BRITISH CLUB
SPORTS & FITNESS 51 For the first time this year we hosted a “Little Barracudas Learn To Swim Gala”. We had over 90 swimmers compete in our 20-metre lap pool in different age related races. We had noodle races for the under 5 year-olds and kick board races for the 6 years and overs plus 20-metre freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly races. All participants received a gold medal along with a Gala T shirt, ice-cream and soft drinks. Lots of fun was had by all. We would like to thank the Total Swimming team and the Sports & Recreation department for their support in making this little gala such a great event. We sincerely hope it was an event that brought fond memories and experiences to all of our budding little swimmers. Let’s hope we can make this an annual event for the Learn To Swim group.
Coming up next month is the SEAP Masters competition and the 2nd leg of the Neptune League for the Barracudas.

SPORTS & FITNESS 53 SQUASH:
DEMOCRACY IN ACTION By Andrew Vine Mid-March saw The British Club swarming with clogs, tulips and Edam sandwiches as the Dutch Club came to visit for the first ‘Oranges and Roses’ match - a new annual inter-club mega-fixture. The British Club top order - Charlie and Ben - scored straightforward wins over their opposite numbers but the meat of our line-up did not do so well. Jim Mitchell was in a very sporting mood and decided NOT to claim his handicap advantage and promptly lost. “Don’t worry” said James Bauly as he charged into the lead, earned 5 match points . . . and then lost! There were many other close battles, all played in a great spirit but in the end the Dutch were too good and our recently purchased trophy, having spent all of 3 hours at the Club, was taken home by the men in orange. We are already looking forward to the rematch next year, but before then have fixtures against SCC (“The Ashes”), the Americans (“The Ryder Cup”) and the Tanglin Club (“The War of the Roses”) to enjoy.
