• PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • Dear Members, Unusually, I need to start with a concern. Recently I have overheard or become aware of members of the club expressing the view that the club is struggling financially. This raises many concerns, amongst which are the following: • Firstly, it couldn’t be further from the truth as the club has achieved five years of continually improving financial results and has generated a positive cash flow over that period. • Secondly, it could be that members simply don’t have access to the financial information or don’t understand it. Our annual financial report is published and made available to all members and is posted on the website. The Main Committee also prepares and presents a detailed presentation of the club’s finances at the AGM, which is open to all voting members. To better inform members we entertain and respond to any questions that we receive. I would therefore hope that lack of information or understanding doesn’t give rise to this issue. • Thirdly, it doesn’t help the reputation of the club of which we are all members if the broader community perceives the club as poorly run or in a perilous state and this has a knock-on effect in several areas such as our ability to attract new members and even to deal with suppliers. Can I ask fellow members to exercise care and judgment in what they say in this regard? Now to more positive matters. Mothers are like buttons, they hold everything together. What a great saying that is! Many youngsters (and fathers like me) will soon find themselves panicked at the thought of another Mother’s Day and little time, or maybe imagination, to do justice to the person we rely upon most. International Mother’s Day falls on the 13th of May, which is a Sunday. The club is offering a variety of options for those of us that want to organise a (surprise) celebratory meal at any of the restaurant outlets. These events will no doubt be popular so please book early to avoid disappointment. On Tuesday April 10th the club held the first 2018 Best of British event. The event was a dinner attended by just under sixty people, served in sumptuous surroundings in a fabulously nautically dressed Elizabeth suite, following a menu approved by the Queen and ending with a presentation and Q&A session with the last captain of The Royal Yacht, Britannia. We have had excellent feedback and we hope this sets the precedent for the rest of the 2018 program. The next Best of British event is, of course, the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. I can’t promise one of these every year! To celebrate, the club is holding a classic British street party with live screening of the wedding. If, like Harry’s brother, you’re a football fan, join us after at Windsor Arms for the 2018 FA Cup final. To add to the Royal Wedding celebrations, the club also released 50 Transferable Lifetime Memberships at $10,700 (U.P. $21,400). Members are the best ambassadors for the club so take this opportunity to refer your friends. You will receive up to 30,000 British Club Reward Points for every successful referral. Email membership@britishclub.org.sg to book a club tour for your friends. Finally this month, I would like to recognise a particular membership group, the Craft Ladies, for their continued effort to raise funds for the Gurkha Welfare Trust. The ladies have written an article for this month’s magazine so please flip through to have a read and learn more about what they do. See you at the club during the exciting month of May. DAMIAN R. • GM’S MESSAGE • Dear Members, April was indeed a busy month as we celebrated Easter, held our first Best of British event with Commodore Anthony Morrow CVO (The Last Captain of The Royal Yacht Britannia), and dined in chaos with Basil, Sybil and Manuel from Faulty Towers. With this splendid start to Best of British 2018, we will be looking to continue the success with The Royal Wedding Street Party. Join us for a classic British Street Party on Sat, 19 May to celebrate the union of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. This will be a Club wide event that will kick off at 5pm with the live coverage of The Royal Wedding at The Elizabeth Suite. Enjoy Classic British recipes, modern twists and fresh summer flavours while your kids participate in exciting activities at Treetops Lounge. We will also be hosting our very own Great British Bake Off where Members are invited to sign up to become contestants to try to impress the distinguished panel with a beautifully-crafted and delicious cake. Grab your tickets by calling 6410 1100 or email activities@britishclub.org.sg. In addition to the royal celebrations, The British Club also released 50 exclusive Transferable Lifetime Memberships at $10,700 (U.P. $21,400). Every sign-up will include a pair of invites to the Club’s Best of British – Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Singapore Turf Club on Sun, 21 Oct. Do take this opportunity to refer your friend and receive up to 30,000 British Club Reward Points for every successful sign up for the Transferable Lifetime or Lifetime Membership. This promotion will end on 31 May so call 6410 1100 or email membership@britishclub.org.sg to book a private club tour for your friend now. Best of British 2018 will heat up in June with the Commonwealth Wine Gala Dinner, and a Cooking Demo and Lunch by UK Celebrity Chef Lesley Waters. Best known for her television appearances over 12 years with Ainsley Harriott on the BBC’s Ready Steady Cook and This Morning on ITV, Lesley will be whipping up a culinary storm with a specially curated 5-course dinner on Fri, 8 Jun. A Cooking Demo and Lunch will follow on Sun, 10 Jun. Do flip through the magazine to find out more about Lesley and the events. I would like to highlight this month’s swimming article and share more about Jamie and Harry. These two incredible boys have recently participated in a meet in Melbourne and won the hearts of plenty. This article shares with us about some of the struggles faced by Jamie’s parents, Cliff and Jo Jeyes, whilst trying to engage coaches for Jamie, as well as the misconception about Down Syndrome. A gentle reminder for the gents and children that Mother’s Day is on Sun, 13 May. It is not too late to book an amazing champagne brunch for your Mother. There will be Baby Lobsters, Live Carving Station, Raclette Cheese Station, and mains like Beef Cheeks and Barramundi available on the special day. A hungry mum is an angry mum so call 6410 1100 or email banquetsales@britishclub.org.sg to book now. Thank you for your continued support and see you at the Club! ANDREW CHRISTON General Manager

Special Interview
with UK Celebrity Chef Lesley Waters As featured in Expat Living Magazine.
Will this be your first time to Singapore? What are your expectations?
And what are some of the tricks of trade you’ll be teaching in your cooking demo?
I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting Singapore so I’m very excited. I’m looking forward to the whole experience and immersing myself in the vibrant city. I have many friends who have visited before and they’ve told me what a vibrant and exciting city it is. I’m also looking forward to working with chef Sunny and meeting all the expat community.
Our motto at the cook school is “Simple is good and good is simple”, and my aim will be to offer some simple techniques and fresh ideas that guests can take away with and use at home – for example, there’ll be an unusual black garlic bruschetta, some tasty marinades and a fool-proof method to create a pan-seared gravadlax. Presentation of dishes is also something we’ll cover, and how to prep ahead to make life easy. We will also be showing guests how versatile the dishes are and how they can be used in different ways.
Any favourite local dishes that you’re keen to try? I’ve been researching classic Singapore dishes and these really caught my eye and so I’ll be looking to try them all: roti prata with teh tarik, nasi lemak, char kuay teow and laksa. And I shall be sampling the satay at breakfast, lunch and dinner as it’s one of my favourite things!
What can Best of British guests expect at your five-course gala dinner? The dishes will include some of the favourite and most loved recipes from my cookery school in Dorset, including canapés such as cider tempura oysters, baby crab and ginger tarts, and Dorset lamb patties with a classic Cumberland glaze, along with starters like peppercrusted Somerset Capricorn goats’ cheese with a puy lentil dressing – one of my favourites. We will follow it with a wonderful hot smoked salmon with spinach cream, and seared fillet steak steamed in a red wine and balsamic glaze served with a traditional Béarnaise sauce. Pudding will feature chocolate, jellies, rhubarb and cream, with a cheese board and an instant tamarind, date and pear chutney to finish!
What are your three current favourite ingredients to cook with? It depends on the season. Currently, we have wild garlic everywhere you look and I love using this for flavour. I also use citrus in many of my dishes – I love the clean fresh taste that it gives. We have a local orchard near the cook school that has developed the most amazing apple balsamic and apple vodka, which I enjoyed in a bowl of borscht the other day.
What piece of kitchen equipment could you not do without? Sorry, I can’t just say one – it’s the teacher in me! Sharp knives, good non-stick pans and bakeware, and a great pepper mill and I’m a happy woman.
Savour the finest courses prepared by Chef Lesley at the Commonwealth Wine Gala Dinner on Fri, 8 Jun and don’t miss Chef Lesley showcase of her culinary skills at the Cooking Demonstration followed by lunch on Sun, 10 Jun. More details on the next page. SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT |

THE CLOCK IS TICKING ON REPORTING YOUR OFFSHORE TAX OBLIGATIONS TO HMRC – HERE’S WHY…. By David Pugh
For British expats living overseas, setting aside some time to consider your UK tax affairs isn’t always a top priority. But as you may expect HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) do not share the same view. The UK income tax system works on the basis of self-assessment, so it’s up to the individual to complete a UK tax return to declare all sources of income that fall within the UK tax net to HMRC. Given the complexities of the UK tax legislation, when it comes to any offshore income the position is often far from clear.
Now’s the time to act Should you believe that you have any unreported offshore income that could be taxable in the UK, the time to act is now, as HMRC are currently focusing their efforts to collect any tax due on undeclared offshore income. HMRC takes a more favourable view of individuals who come forward voluntarily with any undisclosed income, as opposed to HMRC discovering undeclared offshore income. This discovery is becoming easier for HMRC to achieve under the new Common Reporting Standard (CRS) mechanisms which have been adopted by governments globally. To help taxpayers come forward to disclose any undeclared overseas income to HRMC, they are currently offering a period of grace for those with relevant offshore tax non-compliance until 30 September 2018. By this time, they need to have approached HMRC with the intention of fully disclosing their non-compliance. As part of this tax amnesty HMRC have confirmed they will not make use of any information they have obtained under the new CRS system until after the 30 September 2018 disclosure deadline. After this 30 September 2018 deadline has passed, strict new penalties will come into force, with the standard penalty being 200% of the Potential Lost Revenue (PLR), unprecedented in recent history, with the general maximum penalty provisions for the very worst offenders being 100% of the tax that HMRC proved was unpaid. In addition, the scope for mitigation of any penalties issued is limited to only very exceptional circumstances, which highlights HMRC’s aggressive intention to discovering as much undeclared overseas income as possible. One further significant change in the pipeline is that HMRC is currently pushing the government to add to arsenal and the power to go back and assess 12 years of any undeclared income in all cases of non-disclosure.
“Name and Shame” Under the new rules for undeclared offshore income, HMRC now have the right to publish details of those who have avoided taxes of £25,000 or more (a relatively low figure in terms of total UK Tax Revenue). No longer will this archaic way of disciplining offenders be reserved for just the very serious cases of tax evasion.
Take responsibility All the above does sound alarming but there are simple steps that can be taken to bring your UK affairs up to date. Today more than ever before, its crucial for individuals to regularly review their tax status and if in any doubt seek advice from qualified and experienced tax advisers.

CHRISTOPHER SHORT and his family
What do you think of the Club and its offerings thus far? Although we have not been members for long, we have been impressed by the number of opportunities that the Club has for members of all ages. We have utilised the food and beverage outlets on several occasions and the quality and variety of dishes has been fabulous. The staff are very friendly and always go out of their way to give great service. We are looking forward to using the leisure facilities over the coming months. Tell us more about what you do at the school and what makes it meaningful? I often say I have the best job in the world as it is so varied and rewarding. My core role is to support our group of fantastic teachers in the brilliant work they do with our students. Dover Court is only the second inclusive school I have led and I’m converted. When I see what all our children gain and learn from the environment we have, it is truly inspiring. The biggest highlight of my day is always seeing children around the school having such fun whilst they are learning. I still laugh when I hear Reception children shouting out ‘Hello Mr Shorts’, they find that very amusing! At 6’ 3” the name Mr Short does confuse! Do you have any advice for our members with children aged 3-18?
For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature Christopher Short and his family. Christopher joined the Club in December last year. He is the Principal of Dover Court International School. We find out more about Christopher in this interview.
Advice on parenting is always fraught with danger but I’ll give it a try! Our children, Sophie and Jaimie, are now aged 19 and 17 respectively and live in the UK. We have always tried to expose them to as many experiences as possible. Aside from the usual swimming, football and other activities, they can both sail, ski and are accomplished scuba divers. They were both involved in Scouting and the Duke of Edinburgh programmes which enabled them to have fantastic and challenging experiences. One essential skill they learned is to be able to read a map and use a compass to navigate – a dying art! As they have got older they have then decided which activities to keep up; Sophie plays netball at her university and Jaimie is in his first XV rugby team. What would a typical weekend be with your family? If the children aren’t with us then Louise and I usually have quiet home based weekends. I’m an early riser and I love sitting on our terrace in the morning drinking coffee and reading. As relatively newcomers, we’re still exploring Singapore but love the parks and the myriad of restaurants. The Sunday semi buffet in the Windsor Arms has quickly become a firm favourite. If the children are around then we are usually a little busier with some more energetic exploring or we are away diving. We’ve just come back from a week in the Philippines which was great.

LADIES CRAFT GROUP CHARITY INITIATIVE FOR THE GURHKA WELFARE TRUST
Maggie and the ladies at the 2017 Christmas Fair selling raffle tickets. The hand-made prizes for the raffle.
October 2016 House completion A lovely image of Mrs Maya Thapa smiling outside her new home!
Manbu School The building to the far left is the 10 classroom block the Trust built
last year. The building under construction is the Government of Nepal In 2016 the Craft group, headed by Maggie Ashman, raised 6 classroom block; on the ground floor there are 3 classrooms, 2 of enough money to build a house in Dhading near Kathmandu, Nepal for a Gurkha widow and her family who found themselves which will be used for the library. homeless after the 2015 Gorkha earthquake.
During the 2017 Christmas period the craft group raised a record breaking S$6,000 by selling raffle tickets, again to raise funds for the Gurkha Trust. The prizes were all hand made by members of the craft group and included a beautiful hand crafted large Navy and White Quilt, Christmas wreath, hand felted Poinsettia table decoration and a quilted tote bag. The group worked tirelessly over a period of 4 months to complete the prizes. The craft group’s initiative for 2017 was to build another house in Nepal, however, we were informed that the housing projects had been completed and that the Trust was now focusing on immediate needs for the children. The Trust has funded the construction of a school in Manbu and the government has added another 2 story building next to the school. The plan is to now create a library for the school using two of the ground floor classrooms. The proceeds of the raffle have been received by the Gurkha Trust and will be used to create and fit out the library, stocking it with books for the education of the children. It should be noted that the amount of money raised in 2017 was Vincent being presented with a hand-made quilted cushion by the almost double of that raised in 2016. This would not have been ladies of the Craft Club. Vincent is now an honorary member of the possible without the amazing dedication of our good friend Craft Club. Vincent – the British Club’s Ambassador. Vincent singlehandedly All ladies are invited to join our group every Tue, raised a large proportion of the funds by selling raffle tickets in 10:30am to 3pm. You do not need any skills, just the reception area every day during the Christmas period. As a token of our appreciation the Craft Group presented Vincent a enthusiasm for crafts and a desire to help handmade quilted cushion and awarded him honorary member The British Club charities. of the Craft Club. 20 |

MEET
our feared Instructor and Gym Manager
ROHAIZAD BAHARI
Rohaizad is the Gym Manager at The British Club. He is the instructor for TRX and Junior Fitness Group Coaching classes and oversees the overall operations at the Gym. Happily married, Rohaizad is a proud father of 2. His daughter is 22 years old and loves singing. She represented Singapore in the tertiary level in Korea, Busan and was awarded bronze in that category. His son will be turning 21 this year and is a professional football player! Fitness has always been a part of Rohaizad and in his early years, he worked as an army personnel. As a Physical Training Instructor for young national servicemen in the army, he was responsible in training them to be more disciplined and physically fit. Throughout his 10 years there, Rohaizad has helped develop many young servicemen in both the physical and mental aspects. One of the most memorable experiences as a Physical Training Instructor was when the company he was tasked to head was awarded the best company despite them being the underdog from the start. Thereafter, Rohaizad decided to leave the army to join a commercial gym as a Fitness Instructor. Rohaizad started working part time at the Club 4 years ago, and loved the environment here. As exclaimed by him, the Members here take their workouts very seriously. With the recent permanent role as Gym Manager, Rohaizad and his team will be looking for new ideas and ways to improve the gym and fitness classes!

1) Tell us something about yourself that nobody knows. Contrary to my physical appearance, I am actually a gentle giant deep down. Do not judge a book by its cover! 2) Favorite equipment at the Gym? It has to be the mighty bench press. Chances are I’m currently on the equipment right now. 3) Strength or Endurance? Both are equally important. Doing more repetitions with lighter weight will help build up your endurance but at the end of the day, you need both elements to achieve the perfect balance. 4) What is your favorite local dish? My mother’s Asam Pedas. Asam Pedas is a spicy and tangy fish stew that is sure to lift the weakest appetite. 5) Upper body or lower body? Lower body. Stronger legs and core muscle will increase your upper body strength and thus help upper body muscle development. 6) How are the Members like at the gym? I usually go around terrorising members with difficult workouts so they are usually kind to me. Jokes aside, Members have generally been friendly and most are very enthusiastic about their workouts! 7) Aside from gym workouts, what other interest do you have? This might come as a surprise but I love attending cooking and baking classes. 8) How many times should we work out a week? 3 to 4 times a week as your body needs to recover in-between workouts. 9) What is a good pre workout snack? A banana before your workout will boost your glycogen stores and increase blood sugar level. 10) Football or Rugby? Football. Tottenham Hotspur is my favorite team. 11) Your next travel destination? I hope to head to Finland soon to catch the disappearing Northern Lights. 12) At what age should one start working out? This is very subjective and it depends on each individual but between 14 to 15 years old if I really have to answer. 13) Favorite sports drink (or water)? Carbonated 100 PLUS for an extra boost to your energy level. 14) What is your favorite movie of all time? Transformers. I always enjoy the amazing action scenes and computer animation.

vines and grapes. In fact, growing conditions are so good that for many years, the South of France was known for producing great quantities of unremarkable wine to be blended and sold in bulk. In recent years, the global economy has largely shifted the production of those inexpensive wines to the New World. So the newest generation of winemakers in the South of France have set their focus on producing high-quality wines that reflect their specific appellations. The Languedoc, toward the western end of the coast, is the largest single winemaking region in the world. Producers there have taken big strides to upgrade the quality and limit the quantity of Languedoc wines. The best make wines from vines grown on the hillsides. The grape varietals that thrive in this region are Carignan, Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. GOING DUTCH ON ST. PATRICK’S DAY By The Boaster
The St Patrick’s day weekend is when many see green (and sometimes turn green after too much Guinness), but for the BC squash section, orange is the new green, as that was the weekend we took on the Dutch Club in our annual megafixture. This year each club selected 14 of their finest, though the match-up seemed uneven when half the Dutch side went to the British Club instead of their home courts where the event was happening. Clearly the Scores chicken curry is still a major attraction! Once the games started, it was clear things would be close. Momentum, the most fickle of sporting states, flicked between the clubs faster than a James Pickles forehand heading cross court. Two top BC players (Nick and Mark) lost by the tiniest margins in 5-set thrillers, but others did better. Navigating the low roof, which ruled out the tantalising lob serve preferred by many, was a challenge, but was overcome. With the final match on court, the Dutch led 7-6. The captains conferred on the most sporting way to determine a winner in the event of a draw. A countback was too geeky, a coin toss too lame . . . and so a Guinness challenge (fastest to down a pint) was settled on. Alas, the final match went to the Dutch, with Craig playing a great game but losing in five sets. The Dutch were winners 8-6, but Liam still sank the pint with gusto. The Hollandse Club were, as always, good hosts. We look forward to entertaining them next year and reclaiming the trophy. SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT |

• SPORTS & FITNESS • CRICKET:
CRICKET SECTION REPORT By Krishna Persaud The British Club Cricket section played two matches in March unfortunately coming up on the short end of both. A few positives from March are, we have a new pitch over at Turf City so even bigger expectations are now being set as we want to protect our new home “turf”, we have had a total of 24 players suit up for The BC this season already, and we even had a few father-son combos come out and play (as per the attached pictures), including the opportunity to bat in middle together! A few highlights from the month of March in terms of batting were 1) Nick “Coco” Power with 129 runs in 5 matches and an average of 27, 2) Todd “Bucky” Buck with 128 runs in 5 matches and an average of 35.3, and 3) Paul “Spac” McNee with 64 runs in 4 matches and an average of 32.0, and on the bowling side of things we see some names similar to the batting 1) Coco taking 4 wickets with a 4.53 econ, 2) Spac taking charge with 5 wickets and a 6.85 econ and, 3) Kimble Willis taking 4 wickets with a 4.11 econ. Our MVP for the Month of March is Nick “Coco” Power! Huge performances with both bat and ball helped to earn Coco this award, he has stepped up the past few matches opening the bowling, although is it not ideal for him to be bowling with the new ball. He is still able to provide the tight consistency The BC needs at the top of the bowling innings. With the bat, Coco always seems to come into a tough situation and finds a way to continuously give some stability in the middle innings, showing no moment is ever too big for him. Regarding the play of the cricket section this month Coco says, “BC sharpens its on-field performances by playing an elevated standard of opposition.” We are happy to welcome any new players no matter your level of cricket ability, so please feel free to come down to Turf City on Saturday around 1 to see what we are about. Alternatively, we come back up to Scores Bar after ever match for a casual after match debrief so feel free to stop by there as well. Be sure to follow British Club Cricket on Twitter at @BCCricketSG to keep up-to-date with live in match stats and updates.

GOLF SECTION REPORT by John Hancock Sun, 18 March saw an early start at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal for the overseas March Stableford competition at Laguna Bintan. This was the first time the golf section had hosted a family golf day with eleven golfers of all ages, all dressed up in a variety of colours!
Monthly medal winners:
First 38 points on countback John Hancock (h/c 14)
At the golf section we understand, as parents, that our family life is busy, so finding opportunities to play together at an affordable price can be quite a challenge, and in Singapore the options are quite limited. The idea of the family golf day is to bring golfers of all ages and abilities together and play on courses that offer value for money. Laguna Bintan (renowned currently in the Singapore golfing circles for offering an annual membership of 510 SGD) was in great condition and didn’t disappoint.
Second 38 points Andrew Bond-Webster (h/c 28)
Nearest The Pin Tom Holloway (h/c 26)
The golf section is planning to hold a family golf day event once every 3 months. If you like to join us at the next event, please do get in touch golf@britishclub.org.sg Upcoming Fixtures 11 May

SWIMMING FOR MORE THAN GOLD By Joanne Pasquale
J cheering
Some of you may have spotted these two young men swimming at the club or have seen the recent social media posts about them. For those that haven’t, let me introduce you to Jamie and Harry. Jamie is 17 and has been living in Singapore since 2014. He lives with his parents, BC members Cliff and Jo Jeyes, his sister Louise, 12 and he also has a 20 year old brother Sam who is currently at uni in Leeds. Harry has been here since 2016 with his parents Sue and David and has two older sisters, Sophie, 19 and Isabel, 21 who are both studying at uni in the UK.
Gold medal
Jamie and Harry are currently being home schooled together and both Jo and Sue wanted part of their ‘curriculum’ to include swim training. However, Jo had been trying for some time to find a coach for Jamie who also swims as part of the Singapore Special Olympics program. “Sadly, many clubs and coaches couldn’t see past the fact that Jamie has special needs and so automatically shy away. The coaches at SO are great, but they volunteer their time so can’t offer any more than once a week.” She explained to us. “I had tried several places since we arrived in Singapore but still could only get the one hour a week Jamie swam with SO.” Having learned about the Down Syndrome Sports Association Jo and Sue were keen to sign the boys up for membership. However, they knew without more intensive training the boys just wouldn’t be able to compete in any of the competitions.

THE BRITISH CLUB
“We were out to dinner with some friends one evening and I was explaining how frustrating it was trying to find Jamie and Harry some serious coaching when our friend Steve - who happened to be on the committee of the British Club and unknown to me, in charge of sports! - asked if we’d tried the BC. I hadn’t, as to be honest, had assumed I’d get the same answer as everyone else.”
• SPORTS & FITNESS •
The competition, which took place over the weekend in September featured swimmers ranging in age from 12 to 30. Some of those who competed had won several competitions including at the Special Olympics, National and International Games - so the boys faced some stiff competition. “We knew the boys were facing young men who’d been competing seriously for years, some had already competed in the Special Olympics. But we wanted them to experience a proper competition.” Sue explains. “And we’re so glad we did. The whole weekend was just a fantastic event full of spirit, inspiration and camaraderie.” The boys swam in the 25m and 50m freestyle, 25m and 50m breastroke, 25m and 50m butterfly. Boys on the beach
But what Jo didn’t realise is that Coach Alain, owner of Total Swimming who runs the swimming lessons at the British club is also a former Paralympic coach. An email from Steve that next week and Coach Alain was only too happy to help. He is now coaching the boys three times a week and told us. “My personal philosophy as a coach is first accepting and loving my athletes as unique individuals that with the investment of hope, patience and consistency will begin to unlock their very own gifted potential.” With the encouragement of proper coaching, Jo and Sue decided to enter the boys in to their first big competition. In Geelong, Melbourne! “We’d been in touch with the Down Syndrome Swimming Association and noticed there was a championship coming up so emailed them to ask for more info. The organiser, a lady called Libby could not have been more welcoming. Before we knew it the boys had places as ‘international guests’ and we were booking flights to Melbourne.”
To many cheers - and tears! - Harry won gold in the 25m freestyle overall and beat his personal best! Jamie also beat his personal bests in all of his races. “I think the spirit of the competition really helped them and they had a great time.” Jo told us. “Without the help of Coach Alain and the support of the British Club, we really couldn’t have got to this stage. Coach is now talking about the International Championships next year - In Canada!!” Jo and Sue laugh but you can tell behind the laughter is some serious planning! Jo has written a book about her experiences as a mum to a child with Down syndrome. For more information on this and to follow the boy’s achievements, please take a look at www.apositiveresult.com
