MISSION

To be the leading international Club in Singapore, exceeding the expectations of our Members and their families.

Please note that club events may be photographed/recorded and these photographs/footage may be used for marketing purposes. Your presence indicates your consent to being photographed/filmed.

Dear Members,

The month of May marks a very important event that we celebrate annually – Mother’s Day. Let me encourage you to make an extra effort on this day to celebrate your mother and to recognise and appreciate our mothers’ roles in our lives. If you are away from your mother this year, you can still make it special by planning a long-distance movie marathon or a dinner date via video! Alternatively, why not bring her up to the Club for a delicious lunch at the Verandah Café, high tea date at the Windsor Arms, or an exquisite dinner at the Mountbatten Bar & Grill.

Shortly after, we see ourselves celebrating Father’s Day in June. Take your Dad out for a drink at Windsor Arms, or head out for a sporting activity with him at the Sports Centre. On this day, allow your father to feel appreciated! Alternatively, you may purchase a Father’s Day scratch card set from the Hangout to let your kids create a unique gift for their Dad.

I am very delighted to announce that the Treetops Suite renovation is now complete and is now fully operational. With this refreshed look, the space is ready to host meetings, seminars and weddings. When the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, we would be able to host more events like before, such as social gatherings or parties. In the meantime, if you haven’t visited the Treetops Suite, do head up to Level 3 and let us know what you think. For bookings and enquiries, you may contact our Banquet Sales Team.

Last month, we held our Virtual Member’s Connect Night on Thursday, 1 April. I am always excited to meet and welcome new members to our Club, and I hope all members can join us in the next session. During the

event, you can stand a chance to win lucky draw items such as a wine hamper or dining vouchers, while keeping yourself updated on the latest Club news & happenings.

In the meantime, stay connected with us through our social media pages like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as we keep you in the loop for virtual events, F&B promotions and latest Sports activities. You may also head over to our refreshed website to find out all about the Club.

I hope you have a fantastic two months ahead as we celebrate Motherhood & Fatherhood.

We recently conducted a members’ survey at the Club. Thank you for taking the time to give us your thoughts and feedback. The aim of this member survey is to find out the current satisfaction levels of members, and to determine areas for further development to remain relevant. With the information provided, we will work towards improving your experience with every visit to the Club.

For those who enjoy a good drink, check out our monthly liquor promotions at the Windsor Shop, and head down to our F&B outlets (Windsor Arms and Scores Sports Bar) for specially imported beer of the month.

Kim Forrester, our recurring article contributor, is an award-winning author, educator and consultant who aims to inspire holistic well-being and fullness of living. She has been earnestly finding ways to help us stay level-headed during this pandemic. In this issue, she shares on emotional tools to help us get through negative times. If you are keen to find out more, head over to Thrive, with Kim on page 16.

Keeping healthy through sports activities is also a good way to relax the mind. I am glad to see the tennis courts and swimming pools being fully utilized! If you have no clue where to start but would like to embark on a fitness journey, you

can look for our personal trainers at the gym for a personalized training session to improve overall posture, strength and endurance.

We have had great feedback about the new sun loungers by the pool and am pleased to report that new parasols and pool furniture (chairs and tables) have been ordered to match the sun loungers. Delivery is expected late May or early June. Do let us know if any of you would like to have any of the older furniture for your home and we will be happy to facilitate.

If you have not done so already, do pop up to the third floor and have a look at the newly renovated Treetops Suite. This space is now an ideal venue to host your meetings and seminars; a half-day package would cost a very reasonable $48 per person (including a coffee break and lunch) and a full- day would cost $58 per person (Including two coffee breaks and lunch). These prices include room hire, service, writing materials, mints, ice water, flipchart set, LCD projector and screen.

In future when we can do so, this space will provide a perfect venue for your dinner parties and cocktail receptions. We shall also be using this space as venue for many of our Club events.

Lastly, if you have any friends who are keen to join us as a British Club

member, you may refer them to us for a Club tour via our website. You will be eligible to receive up to 13,000 rewards points, which is equivalent to $260 in food credits when they join!

Wishing you all the best in the coming months.

A BRAND-NEW SPACE: TREETOPS SUITE

The Treetops Lounge and Terrace have been closed for some time now, undergoing a facelift. We are pleased to announce that the renovation works are now complete, and you can look forward to a brand-new space –the Treetops Suite

Located on the third floor of the Club’s main building, the theme of the brand-new Treetops Suite is tropical, classic, and monochromatic, suitable for all types of events. Whether you are looking for a professional space to host meetings, a cosy space for seminars, or an elegant space for solemnizations, the Treetops Suite is the venue of choice.

One of the more significant additions to the Treetops Suite include three private balconies which can accommodate up to a party of six for private dining sessions, or casual meetings while soaking in the serenity. Situated at the peak of the hilltop, expect a refreshing overview of nature, compared to the usual everyday city view. The space is also well-equipped with furniture and audio-visual equipment which can be configured to meet your event needs.

See the old and new photos below.

WHY SHOULD SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE INVESTING MATTER?

Historically, ethical investing and SRI (Socially Responsible Investing) have been viewed as a rather niche area of investment, often for those with very specific requirements.

A number of factors have changed things. The growing awareness of environmental issues and an increasing understanding of social issues and human rights have each played their part. The widely adopted Stewardship Code has also meant investment managers have embraced a ‘responsible ownership’ agenda. This in turn is beginning to impact the share prices of more ‘ethical’ companies, a trend which is accelerating, to the benefit of both SRI funds and investors.

There are four main approaches to socially responsible investing:

Responsible ownership and engagement: This sees fund managers taking greater interest in their responsibility as part owners of companies. This is to encourage companies to improve their practices in areas where investors believe environmental, social or governance

related risks and/or opportunities could be managed better for the benefit of shareholders. Generally this tactic isn’t enough on its own to regard a fund as socially responsible, but companies held in such funds generally manage ESG issues relatively well.

Avoidance or negative screening strategies: Negatively screened ethical funds typically have a list of business practices that are considered unacceptable. The criteria which defines a fund to be negatively screened is often connected with values based ethical issues, but may also relate to environmental, social or governance concerns. However, some funds exclude companies with only minor involvement in excluded activities whereas others are less strict, and balance the positive benefits of companies against their negative attributes. We tend to class a portfolio including these types of funds or investments as “Light Green”.

Positive screening strategies: This approach involves investing in companies that meet a manager or fund’s ‘positive’ SRI objectives.

Some funds focus on a single sector or issue, although most are broad based – focusing on a range of longer term challenges and opportunities that face businesses. Themed funds such as Environmental funds and Sustainability funds generally have positive approaches of this kind. We class a portfolio including these types of funds or investments as “Green”.

Impact investment strategies: The point of impact investing is to use money and investment capital for positive social results. Impact fund managers aim to place capital in businesses, non-profits and funds in sectors such as renewable energy, basic services, micro-finance and sustainable agriculture.

Impact investing happens across both geographic markets and asset classes. For example, it might focus on private equity/venture capital, debt and fixed income in developed and emerging markets. By its very nature impact investing tends to direct capital to smaller

advice@thefrygroup.sg • www.thefrygroup.sg • Tel: +65 6225 0825

companies and so is typically regarded as higher risk. A portfolio including these types of funds or investments can be classed as “Dark Green”.

What to remember when considering SRI

It’s important to remember that SRI factors are not the only relevant aspects to consider. Generic factors impact SRI funds as much as they do any other investments. So it’s important to consider asset type, the market capitalisation of the stocks held, geographic spread and timing which can all affect SRI portfolio returns. In addition think carefully about your own investment aims (growth or income), benchmarking decisions, fund manager skill and charging structures.

SRI investing at The Fry Group

Our SRI portfolios are designed to suit investors who are both financially motivated and driven by specific personal values. In evaluating an SRI fund manager we consider the ‘generic’ and ‘SRI’ factors – as neither offers a complete picture on its own.

We invest with managers who recognise that the management of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues can positively impact business success.

FUTURE TRAVEL: HOW CAN WE TRAVEL AGAIN?

We all want to travel and see our loved ones who live in other countries again. There are still a lot of queries and uncertainties around how we can step onto a plane again and how ‘safe’ will travelling be? We asked Dr. Neil Forrest from Osler Health International to guide us through some common questions.

How effective is the COVID-19 vaccine?

The exact efficacy will vary between vaccine brands, but all vaccines approved so far appear to be highly effective (more than 90%) at stopping severe illness and death. There is promising evidence emerging in the UK and Israel that the vaccines also block a significant number of asymptomatic infections. This will be a key factor in any re-opening of travel.

How long does immunity last?

The short answer is: we don’t know! None of the vaccines have been around for long enough to work this out, but current evidence suggests at least 12 months and possibly much longer.

Which vaccine will we get in Singapore, and can we choose which vaccine we receive?

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are currently the only ones approved here, although others are being studied by the regulator. Under the current government roll out, you cannot choose which vaccine is allocated to you.

Are there any groups that should not take the COVID-19 vaccine?

Yes. The vaccines are not licensed in children under 16 or pregnant women, although they are probably safe for these groups and studies are ongoing. People with a history of severe (anaphylactic) allergic reactions should not be vaccinated. People with cancer can receive the vaccine but it would be deferred if they were currently on chemoor radiotherapy.

Does having the COVID-19 vaccine mean we can travel as we did in pre-pandemic times?

Not at the moment! For a long time to come, there will be many people who are not vaccinated and governments will be understandably cautious about a return to mass travel. Measures such as masks, social distancing, testing and quarantine will be a feature of travel for some time to come, although I hope that with vaccination we can significantly reduce their burden.

What is involved in a Pre-Departure Test?

This is a PCR swab test taken within 72 hours of travel in order to demonstrate to the airline/destination country that the passenger is COVID-free. Currently, China requires a blood test to be done in addition to the swab.

Where can I get a Pre-Departure Test?

At Osler Heath we are fully equipped for all forms of pre-departure testing and have already been running these tests for some time. Speak to us in advance so we can help you plan your schedule in order to allow the process to run smoothly.

How are results provided?

We provide certification of results in hard copy and digital form. As part of our Fit-to Fly certification, Osler Health will conduct the required PDT and will issue a verifiable QR code of the test results.

Each unique QR code enables airport check-in staff and Singapore immigration authorities to immediately verify the results under MOH’s new digital health verification process. Turnaround time for results is around 24 hours. Singapore Airlines are currently trialing the IATA travel certification app and we envisage the process becoming entirely digitalised in the coming months.

Do children need to have a Pre-Departure Test?

This will depend on the requirements of the destination country.

Will my Pre-Departure Test results and vaccination status be ‘proof’ for immigration authorities in other countries?

Countries are approaching this in different ways. Currently there is no universally accepted certification system, so speak to us about the requirements in your destination country so we can help make sure the required certification is in place.

Is it ‘safe’ to get on a plane again?

Yes. The aviation industry has gone to great lengths to make things safe. We are already back on public transport in Singapore, and with the proper measures in place, we can start to fly safely as well!

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Member in the Spotlight is a section in the Magazine where members can share more about themselves. In this issue, read all about Jim and Laurie’s adventures before they settled down in Singapore, and find out which dish in the Club sparked memories from their hometown.

What made you join the British Club?

We have been living in Singapore for 11 years now and live within 3km of the British Club. Joining the Club was based on recommendations from our friends and neighbors who were members, plus swimming helped in a knee surgery recovery.

Share with us a little about your family and yourself.

Jim – I was born in the UK, consider myself Scottish and spent the first 40 years of my life living just outside Glasgow before immigrating to the US where I met Laurie in Kansas City. We then immigrated to Singapore in 2010. We really enjoy living here in Singapore. Our families are grown

up and live in the UK and the US. We adopted two Singapore Special street dogs back in 2011 and they keep us active with walks along the Rail Corridor.

Laurie – I was born and raised in the US. Singapore is the first place I’ve lived abroad.

What is your favourite thing to do at the Club?

There is so much to choose from. For sure, early morning swims, a visit to the Windsor Arms in the evening and a massage at the spa are all very enjoyable. However, I would say that with the current work restrictions, my favourite thing to do is to book one of the business rooms on L2 to complete all my phone calls and meetings. The view of the beautiful tropical greenery is a wonderful backdrop to work with and it gives a feeling of having “traveled” somewhere, during a time when we cannot travel. I also want to give a shout out to the staff at the club. They really are wonderful.

Tell us a bit about your work.

Jim – I am the Managing Director of a company called Excelitas. It’s a privately-owned US based company with multiple factories around the world. We produce precision optics in the Singapore factory. The end products are used in Healthcare, Semiconductor, Defense and Aerospace industries. The Singapore facility has around 650 employees and is on the west side of the island at Boon Lay. Before that, I worked for different semiconductor companies in the UK, US and Singapore.

Laurie – I’ve been working as a wildlife rescue Volunteer for ACRES since 2018. I do everything from freeing baby monkeys tangled in football nets, to removing monitor lizards from kitchens. It’s challenging at times, but always rewarding.

If you have to choose one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?

Jim – That’s a tough question. Everything that we have tried has been impressive, however, one night we decided to order the Raspberry pie for desert. I swear it was made with clotted cream, and served with vanilla ice cream. It took me back to visits to the West Country in the very distant past. Now, one of the first things that we do when we visit the Windsor arms is to check the blackboard for Raspberry pie.

Laurie – For me, it’s the pizza. Growing up, we didn’t have a Sunday roast dinner. Instead, my

mom made homemade pizza so it’s a favorite of mine. Danielle’s pizza is, hands down, the best in Singapore.

Finally, tell us something interesting about yourself.

Jim – Well, I love riding motorcycles. In the past, I have ridden thousands of miles in the US with Laurie, including a coast to coast from New York to San Francisco. In Singapore, I continue to ride on the island as well as on trips to Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Those trips to Vietnam made us realize just how much fun it is to ride a small motorcycle. Two people, two small backpacks and a 155cc motorcycle for a week is our idea of heaven. We are longing for those days to return soon.

I also learnt to build guitars during the circuit breaker of 2020. However, it is my wife who has by far the most interesting stories to tell as an animal rescue volunteer in Singapore. After a long shift at ACRES, she has the most wonderful, and sometimes heart-breaking animal rescue stories to tell.

Laurie – I too love riding motorcycles (on the back, for now!) and have been with Jim on some of his 2-wheeled adventures. In a previous life, I spent 6 years as a volunteer coach for a youth cheerleading squad. I started out with very little knowledge of cheerleading as a sport and have no idea how I’d gotten roped in to take on this responsibility. Even so, it was an incredible experience that gave me the opportunity to make new friends and grow as a person.

THE 2021 UK BUDGET REVIEW

Rishi Sunak’s Budget this year was a Budget of two halves. His Budget Speech on 3 March set out a broad 5-year plan combining short-term economic stimulus with medium term fiscal tightening.

The Budget was dominated by the financial impact of Covid-19. The Government has borrowed £408bn so far to fund Covid relief alone, and National Debt is set to peak at 97.1% of GDP in 2023/24. Mr Sunak described repaying this debt as a ‘generational task’. In the meantime, the Government will continue to do‘ whatever it takes’ to protect jobs and businesses.

The four top stimulus announcements from the Budget Day speech:

o Extension of Stamp Duty relief on the first £500,000 to 30 June, followed by

a reduction to £250,000 before returning to pre-Covid levels of £125,000 from 1 October 2021

o Introduction of 8 Freeports aimed at local regeneration, enjoying enhanced Capital Allowances, 100% Stamp Duty and Business Rates relief and Employer National Insurance relief until 2026

o A ‘super deduction’ of 130% in respect of business investment between 1 April 2021 – 31 March 2023

o An enhancement of corporate loss relief to allow a limited carry back of losses to generate prior year Corporation Tax refunds

The five major tax-raising measures announced:

o Corporation Tax will rise from 19% to 25% from 1 April 2023

o On 6 April 2021, the Income Tax allowance will rise to £12,570 and the Basic Rate Threshold to £37,700. Both will then be frozen until 5 April 2026

o The Annual Exempt Amount for Capital Gains Tax will remain unchanged to 5 April 2026

o The Lifetime Allowance for UK Pension Rights will remain fixed at £1,073,100 until 5 April 2026

o The Inheritance Tax allowance of £325,000 will also remain fixed until 5 April 2026

The second half of the Budget, so called ‘Tax Consultation Day’ did not, thankfully, result in an overhaul of the Inheritance Tax system, pegging Capital Gains Tax rates to Income Tax or indeed the introduction of a one-off Wealth Tax, which had been the subject of much speculation. Instead, the Treasury has opted for a more reserved series of measures.

o Timely Payment – A means of bringing the payment of tax closer to the point where the income/gain arises

o Making Tax Digital – This will apply to landlords from 6 April 2023 and will replace the Self-Assessment tax regime

o Non-Compliance – A further raft of measures aimed at those who are not compliant with their tax obligations, promoters of failed tax schemes and collection of international tax debt

o Property Developer Tax – A new tax to be introduced in 2022 levied on the largest developers of residential property.

Overall, the combined cumulative tax revenue raised by the measures announced in the Budget Speech over the five-year period to 5 April 2026 is £68.975bn; or a mere 17% of the present level of Covid-19 related borrowing. Further measures will certainly be needed in due course, but for the moment the Chancellor appears to be taking the view that it will, indeed, require a generational commitment to repay the debt.

What should I do now?

For British Expatriates and those with assets or pensions in the UK, the Budget and Consultation Day announcements have left us with an obvious call to action. Select Investors invites all British Chamber members to a confidential no-obligation meeting with their Head of Tax, Martin Rimmer, to discuss the impact of these announcements on your own tax, succession and wealth plans – and to make them better. Contact martin.rimmer@sjpp.asia to book your appointment.

The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances.

THRIVE, WITH KIM

5 EMOTIONAL TOOLS TO GET YOU THROUGH THE DARKEST DAYS

As the past year has highlighted to many of us, life is a symphony of pleasant and painful experiences. Regardless of how happy, content, and optimistic you are, there will be dark days to confront and endure. It’s natural. It’s normal. It’s part of being human.

For many, the natural inclination in these dark moments is to focus on being “strong”. To fight, withstand, push through, and conquer. But the natural fact is, you’re already strong enough to endure anything; your body, mind, and soul are resilient

enough to make it through even the toughest situations. You will breathe, you will awaken, you will continue, and you will overcome.

So, it is not strength you need to summon on days of pain and despair. Instead, there are five pillars of light that can help you find your way through any darkness; five flickers of grace that can ease the burden of any situation. I believe it is these qualities that you are wise to search for within yourself when life seems most unbearable:

Honesty

The first step in healing a situation –really healing it – is to allow yourself the opportunity to be honest. Firstly, be honest about how you feel. That means all of your emotions, not just the ones on the surface or the ones that are socially acceptable. By acknowledging and confronting everything you feel, you take the power away from your emotions. They can no longer control you.

Secondly, be honest about your own actions, choices, and intentions and how they may have contributed to the current situation. This can be hard to do, as we are often taught

that that there is a “right” and a “wrong” and we’re compelled to judge ourselves and others if the “right” path is not followed. However, if you can be honest with yourself about your past choices, you open yourself up to a new level of understanding.

Forgiveness

If you can find the grace to forgive others for their actions, you begin to set yourself free from pain. Deepak Chopra teaches us to “forgive others, not because they deserve it, but because you deserve it.” Forgiveness does not mean you condone someone’s actions or intent; it does not excuse someone for their behaviour or pardon them from all consequence. Instead, forgiveness is the intimate act of accepting what was, and what is. It is a powerful surrender to the fact that what has happened cannot be changed.

Forgiveness for others is often encouraged. But remember, it is just as important to forgive yourself – for the emotions you feel, the actions you take, the words you say, and the choices you make. You deserve your own mercy. Please offer if freely.

Faith

If you have a religion that inspires you, turn to it. If you have spiritual belief that resonates with you, embrace it. If you have an intimate connection to magic, or nature, or universal consciousness, or a more practical belief in the intelligence and fortitude of humankind, summon it. As Plato said, “We are twice armed if we fight with faith”.

There can be a purpose – a reason –for any painful experience. Drawing upon faith can either reveal that

purpose to you, or help you design one that will carry you forward.

Gratitude

Gratitude is immensely powerful. If you can find one thing to be grateful for, for just a few seconds, then it is a few seconds that you are not living in the darkness. In those moments of gratitude, your body will respond, your emotions will begin to heal, and you will open yourself up to wondrous new solutions and opportunities.

In times of great challenge, you are certainly not expected to be grateful for the “big things”. What is important is to find something to give thanks for in a way that resonates through your entire body with truthfulness and conviction.

“I’m so grateful I had the self-control not to hit that guy!” or “I’m grateful for the pain, for it means I have loved” or “I’m grateful I can retreat into a comfortable bed.” There is no judgement on what you are thankful for; your sincere gratitude is what counts.

Vulnerability

Too often we shy away from vulnerability in our darkest moments because, somehow, it has come to be regarded as the opposite of strength. But the truth is that if you can allow your pain, anguish, or suffering to be fully revealed in a safe space, then your experience becomes more authentic. This in turn makes your personal insights deeper, your connections with others (and yourself) more truthful, and your eventual healing more profound.

Most importantly, being comfortable with your own vulnerability allows you to ask for, and accept, help from the healthiest sources –unconditionally loving friends and family, wise mentors, or trusted professionals.

A life well-lived will inevitably include dark and painful days; days where we need to draw upon our innate strength and resilience. In these moments, I believe it is wise for us to reach into our emotional toolkit and draw upon honesty, forgiveness, faith, gratitude, and vulnerability. More than anything, it is these five pillars of grace that can lighten the load, and help clear our path toward healing.

GUT HEALTH

What is the “The Gut Microbiome”?

The Human gut is made up of trillions of bacteria, viruses and fungi living harmoniously and collectively this is referred to as the Gut Microbiome.

While there are some harmful bacteria there are plenty of good guys which are beneficial to immunity, heart health, weight and moods.

By Dr

The gut microbiome changes the way we metabolise food, it affects our mood (think GUT FEELINGS), it helps us manage our weight and controls our sugar metabolism which reduces the risk of diabetes.

We’re all unique Each person’s gut microbiome is as distinct as a fingerprint. The various strains of microorganisms all affect how the other types thrive in the gut. It’s like a rainforest’s fauna and flora.

Five easy steps to improve gut health

1. Eat a wide range of foods. A diverse microbiome requires diverse food intake. Legumes, beans and fruit contain fibre which act as scaffolding for the microbiome to grow on.

2. Eat fermented foods. Yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir contain lots of lactobacilli species which can help displace the disease causing bacteria in the gut.

3. Eat whole grains - brown rice, whole grain pasta, quinoa and other unrefined grains contain a whole lot of fibre and carbohydrates which feed certain species of bacteria which contribute to weight management, lowering cancer risk and diabetes

4. Take antibiotics only when necessary. Antibiotics typically work as a sledgehammer and kill many good and bad bacteria in the gut and may contribute to weight gain and gastrointestinal issues.

5. Take a probiotic supplement – these are live bacteria which can help to restore the gut by “reseeding” it with healthy microbes.

COMMON REASONS ADULTS SEE ORTHODONTISTS

Orthodontics is not about just having straight teeth it can also solve a host of dental problems.

Not enough tooth?

In some cases the dentist may not have had enough tooth to put a crown on after a root canal. An orthodontist can pull the tooth upwards and give the dentist more tooth to work with.

Too much tooth?

Sometimes a tooth can become super-erupted. The tooth has come out of the gums too far because the opposing tooth is missing and is not in place to keep its opposite tooth in check. Your orthodontist can reposition the over-erupted tooth.

Missing a tooth?

When replacing a missing tooth with an implant you may not have enough bone to support it. Moving a tooth orthodontically can help stimulate jaw bone growth and will recreate sufficient bone for an implant.

Jaw size

One common problems treated by an orthodontist are jaw asymmetries. Maybe your upper jaw is too small? Or the lower too big? Many treatment possibilities exist for orthodontics treatments.

It’s not just about the looks

Untreated tooth and jaw alignment issues can contribute to gum and bone problems; an unstable bite can lead to joint or muscle problems.

A simulation is worth a thousand words

3D technology and clear aligner techniques provide a clear view of the treatment objective and a visualization of work that needs to be done. Not only tooth alignment, but final veneers, crowns and implants can be placed in a 3D visualization in a plan to create a visual picture.

TIPS TO GET YOUR FITNESS BACK ON TRACK

Brought to you by Bupa Global

Have you lost the drive to exercise during the pandemic? Give your exercise routine an overhaul, reignite your passion and discover your new favourite workout by checking out some of the hottest exercise trends to hit the fitness scene.

1. Exercise anywhere with bodyweight training

A growing trend that’s set to take exercising back to basics, bodyweight training is a simple way to utilise one of the most effective exercise tools you have: your own body.

Discover a couple of simple bodyweight routines online or work with a personal trainer to devise the ideal set of reps for you. Soon you’ll

be free to exercise wherever you are, with no equipment or time restrictions – perfect for fitness fans who regularly travel for work or pleasure.

2. Merge disciplines for a new breed of workout

Switching up your routine can be great for motivation, and we are increasingly seeing gyms and personal trainers combining a variety of fitness activities to create hybrid classes that promise a full-body workout.

For example, taking inspiration from ballet-inspired Barre classes that focus on strength and conditioning, BootyBarre turns up the heat by combining Pilates, cardio and dancebased moves for a dynamic, full-body workout. Having built up a loyal following in America, it’s starting to roll out across the globe, so look out for classes at your local gym.

Also gaining momentum is TRX training, which promises to complement and improve your yoga practice. While traditional yoga uses blocks or bolsters to support various poses, TRX, which stands for totalbody resistance exercise, uses anchors and straps to suspend the body and help users master more advanced postures.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has already established itself as a firm favourite, but why not up the intensity while protecting your joints by looking for water-based HIIT exercise classes? Offering an intense aqua-aerobic workout, it’s another way of combining two fitness activities in one. You can also give your HIIT sessions a more meditative edge, with a blend of HIIT, yoga and Pilates workouts.

3. Family fitness shows exercise has no age limit

With many gyms and personal instructors increasingly offering bumpfriendly exercise classes, pregnancy fitness is booming. Seek the advice of your GP or midwife before signing up to antenatal Pilates, aqua-aerobics and cardio classes that have been tailored for expectant mothers.

Once your baby is born, postnatal classes can provide a fun way of bonding with your new arrival while maintaining an active lifestyle. Grab your pram or pushchair and head for a

walking workout where you and baby can enjoy fresh air and the opportunity to socialise with other new mothers and their little ones.

4. Tech innovations make home exercise even easier

Providing access to your very own online instructor, the BoxxMethod’s virtual app is set to make boxercise sessions even bigger this year. Combining HIIT with shadow boxing, the method offers a complete workout and, best of all, you don’t need any bags, pads or a ring to feel the benefits. All you need is the app and a pair of 1kg dumbbells, so it can be completed at home or while travelling for work or pleasure.

Digital instructors coach you through a series of short but relentless rounds, and you can choose a workout to suit your specific goals. For example, you can tailor your session to target your full body, lower body or upper body, then set aside as little as 15 minutes three times a week to start your boxing fitness journey.

Focus on health

It can be challenging to get back on track with motivation to work out, try to set goals that focus on fitness and health. Prioritise your health especially in this stressful time and take this as an opportunity to boost your mental wellbeing.

SWIMMING:

Swimming Beyond Borders Virtual Swim Challenge 2021

It’s been a very active period for the Swimming Section. We have almost 40 swimmers representing the British Club in the Swimming Beyond Borders Virtual Swim Challenge 2021 event organised by Swim Expo Asia that kicked off on Mon, 15 Feb, running for 11 weeks through to Tue, 3 May. The British Club is competing with teams from across Asia including Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Philippines as well as other Clubs in Singapore. Our swimmers score points relative to their registered distance goal categories (10km, 50km or 200km) and after overcoming some initial challenges getting all the “tech” working, our trackers are now recording some amazing distances being clocked.

The British Club pool has been heavily frequented from the very earliest hours of the day through to the late evening by a group of intrepid swimmers seemingly determined to both hit their own personal targets as well as not be out-done by a bit of friendly competition. For those who attend the Master’s training sessions, the Total Swimming coaching team has been superb in providing training support focussed on endurance as

the team swims for longer durations and distances than normally accustomed to.

After the first five weeks of swimming, the team has clocked an amazing cumulative total of 1,788km, most of which has been swum through countless laps of the British Club pool. So, after five weeks of swimming, if you were to draw a 1,788km radius around Singapore, we have reached the likes of Da Nang in Vietnam, West Sulawesi and Lombok in Indonesia, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands!

An amount of juggling has been involved for all swimmers around work, school and family commitments as well as quarantine for a few as well. So far, it has been a phenomenal effort by all from our youngest (aged 9) through to our oldest (somewhere north of 60) and has been quite inspiring to everyone participating and also for many (incredibly patient) spouses, parents, children and wider relatives cheering us on.

To all the swimmers representing the British Club in the event, well done so far and best of luck over the coming weeks, especially to our seven swimmers entered in to the 200km distance event who have to cover an average of almost 20km distance swum per week! Keep it going.

If you’re interested in joining the Swimming team, please email the Convenors, Rebecca or David at swimming@britishclub.org.sg

Cricket is Back!!

On Saturday, 20 March, we played our first game cricket of nearly a year.

However, the format is different, much simpler than ‘actual’ cricket and a really good laugh.

Only eight players are allowed, four batting pairs.

Two people bat, the remaining six field. Each fielder bowls one over, each pair bats for six overs. Once a pair finishes batting they swap with the next pair (still with me?).

The whole game takes one and a half hours and the team that scores the most is the winner.

The wicket keeper is replaced by a three-meter square net. All nicks behind are out, so we have the safest pair of hands ever behind the wicket, although stumpings are a challenge

On the day there had been heavy rain before our 5pm start. We played on the astro turf pitch at Turf City and although there was a bit of standing water it didn’t damped anybody’s spirits.

The players were Mat, Mark R, Roger, Mark A, Karan, Paul, Simon and Tom.

The game was organized and umpired by Rob who had designed a spreadsheet to allow the batting pairs to get bonus runs if they took wickets or catches.

The opening game was won by Mat and Mark R, as a result of some aggressive batting from Mat and some unplayable bowling from Mark.

Mark A won the batting prize for hitting 43 off 19 balls.

Karan won the hero award for continuing to play after damaging his finger in the first over and still taking a catch. The second game, under floodlights, was won by Karan and Simon. Great caught and bowled from Mark R and a fiery bowling spell from Paul.

The evening finished at Scores bar for a well-deserved drink.

More matches have been booked so put your name down on the WhatsApp group; this could be future of cricket.
