RECIPROCAL CLUB SPOTLIGHT
GM’s article on Reciprocal Clubs stay In March, I made a trip to Australia’s Sydney and Melbourne for a vacation with my partner. I had never ever been to either states before so I was quite excited about the trip. It was to be an 8-days stay in Sydney including Hunter Valley for 2 nights and a 6-days stay at Melbourne, with one night at the Yarra River wine country. For very first time instead of staying in 5-star hotels, I thought of making use of our reciprocal club privilege’s which are available to all members of the British Club. So I made the necessary bookings with both clubs and what a real eye opener it was! Having worked and managed hotels for most of my career, I am accustomed to what facilities they should be offering in terms of amenities and overall comfort.
Experience at the Clubs
In fact, the young lady at reception very kindly organised our rental car so we could go to the Hunter Valley. Out of 10, it gets from me a high 8 J The other advantage was its location as the club is situated in the heart of the transports service networks, which made it great for being close to all the amenities. The tariff was most competitive at just AUD$280 per night for 2 persons including breakfast.. really good value!
Royal Automobile Club’s Victoria Room
Royal Automobile Club of Australia Sydney, NSW Duration of stay: 6 Days The RAC club of Sydney is located at the very front of Circular Quay with magnificent views, from our bedroom and the breakfast room, of Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was truly breath-taking just like a picture post card. Each day, we would see a new luxury cruise liner being moored in the harbour. In fact, one day we had the great pleasure of seeing both of Cunard’s vessels, the Queen Mary and the Queen Victoria. A beautiful sight to see! I learned that Cunard was celebrating 150 years in the Industry. This was the reason why both ships were in Sydney harbour. It was quite an event, with fantastic display of fireworks at the harbour! The accommodation was spacious and well-appointed with every convenience you would expect from a 5-star establishment including a generous writing desk which came in handy when writing those post cards. A very nicely equipped ensuite bathroom with all the amenities, and lovely fluffy white crisp towels. What more could you want! Room service was available should you require and free local telephone calls. The club’s complimentary wi-fi was a delight in this digital age. Breakfast was served daily from 7.00 to 10.00am with a very good continental buffet selection with homemade breads, cereals and nice selection of pastries and fresh fruits as well as unlimited amount of freshly brewed tea and coffee. Cooked breakfast from an ala carte menu was also available. Surprisingly, shorts are permitted at breakfast. The staff generally in the club were very accommodating and very helpful with booking excursions or requiring information.
The most unforgettable moment was the climb of Sydney Harbour Bridge, and next to that was our dinner at the Hunter Valley in a lovely quaint restaurant called Roberts Circa 1876 (the best meal and service we had in our 8 days to NSW). Just brilliant! Food and service simply the best of the best, I would truly recommend this establishment. Under the personal direction of Executive Chef George Francisco, who is a true master of his craft! Out of 10, it’s got to be 10 and coming from me it says something! J The Athenaeum Club Melbourne, VIC Duration of stay: 5 Days
After leaving Sydney, we flew to Melbourne and stayed at the renowned Athenaeum Club, based in the heart of Melbourne located on Collins Street, one of Melbourne’s most prestigious addresses. We had booked a suite which included a separate lounge, master bedroom, separate bathroom and had a very nice walkin wardrobe. The accommodation was superbly appointed and is comparable with any 5-star hotel chain similar category of room - nicely furnished and very well maintained with all of the amenities you would expect. Daily newspapers were delivered complimentary to our room. At a cost of AUD$290 per day which includes breakfast - a great value for the style and type of accommodation. I’m sure it would have been much more at any 5-star establishment. As the Club was situated in the heart of the city, it made it easy for us to get around, and just immediately outside the front door of the club was the tram stop which made it very accessible for sightseeing. Great location!
RECIPROCAL CLUB SPOTLIGHT
15
The day we arrived was on a Friday and the restaurants of the club are closed over the weekend. This certainly did not cause us a problem, as we were literally walking distance to lots of eateries and the reception, much to our delight, provided us with individual continental breakfast boxes containing cereal, fruit juice, muffin, etc. The club is truly quite magnificent with its splendid decor and with lots of history that has been garnered over many years. Formal wear must be worn in the club at all times gentleman’s shirt, tie and jacket with the exception for breakfast where a jacket is not compulsory. On Wednesday, the Club’s secretary, Mr Michael Marsterton, very kindly invited us to join him for breakfast. Incidentally, he was General Manager of the British Club in Singapore previously for 12 years. What a lovely experience that was! It was the very first time we took breakfast at the club, as we felt it was a little cumbersome to dress up each morning, but believe me, it was so worthwhile! The breakfast buffet was very well presented and next table but one to us, and not being a name dropper was Mr John Howard, the exAustralian Prime Minister having his breakfast who was also staying at the club. So as you can see we were in the very best of company!

List of Selected Reciprocal Clubs that have Accommodation
During our stay at the Club, as they have a separate lounge in the suite, we entertained some of TK’s family members who were residing in Melbourne. That was really nice as having the lounge gave us the opportunity to entertain in the comfort of our own suite.
Australia Royal Automobile Club of Australia Sydney, NSW The Athenaeum Club • Melbourne
Our dealings with the front desk’s staff were excellent. They went out of their way each and every time we had requests for restaurants, shows etc. Best of the best I have to say! Out of 10, it gets from me a high 9. JJ On the Monday, we drove to the Yarra Valley, just about an hour’s drive and stayed at Balgownie Estates Vineyard. What a lovely experience! Staying at the Vineyard was magical and it was easy for us to drive to the wineries around the region. I have to say we were most impressed with Domain Chandon, a lovely winery, and we had a great tasting there too.
Cambodia Cambodian Country Club • Phnom Penh
Tips: Buy wines from the Duty Free at the airport. I bought one bottle of Domain Chandon from the winery at AUD$35.00 and it was on offer at Duty Free with 3 bottles going for AUD$59.00.
Last words The reason in putting this article together was not to tell you all about my holiday but to highlight that being a British Club Member, it opens up a world of opportunities - an opportunity to travel the world using your British Club reciprocal privileges. This article is an example of the selected clubs we have these arrangements with and in different parts of the world. A British Club Passport is available from Reception and we can introduce you to your club of preference, next time you decide to travel either for business or pleasure. Staying in one of our clubs with reciprocal benefits, I can assure you it will have a lasting impression just like it was for me and TK. I am very sure you won’t be disappointed, and what great value in terms of pricing compared to similar accommodation in any 5-star Hotel! Happy travelling! J Sean Boyle General Manager

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Member in the Spotlight For this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to feature Member, Professor David Stringer. What bought you to Singapore and The British Club? A Woman! I have only ever moved for better skiing or a woman. At Bart’s, I subspecialised with Irene, founder member British Club, ex-Cheltenham Ladies College and Oxford University. Not being available then, I fled to Canada but re-met during a Professorial tour of Australia and 3 weeks later moved to Singapore without a job. She contends I married her for British Club but I say she married me for Tanglin Club! We’re members of other clubs: Tanglin, Cricket, Island and Changi Sailing, but we use British Club most.
You have a splendid track record in the field of Radiology, what motivates you in developing such a passionate interest in the field? I am passionate about kids; Consultant at Great Ormond Street, London, Sick Kids, Toronto and BC Children’s Hospital, Vancouver, before Singapore. Clinical Director, NUH and NUS Professor; then Head at KK Women and Children’s Hospital and Professor at Duke – NUS and Professor in 4 Universities, so everyone calls me Prof. I wrote 7 textbooks and innumerable papers and, surprisingly to me, won every honour in my field, including Caffey Gold Medal. I retired 5 years ago but am Immediate Past President of the Asian Oceanic Society for Paediatric Radiology (AOSPR), covering Turkey to Korea to New Zealand, so I cannot rest. We set up the World Federation of Paediatric Imaging with the North and South American and European Societies, to improve kids care.
Since you have been in Singapore for more than a decade, where is your favourite hangout place in Singapore? Home with three large gorgeously friendly dogs, Hot Chocolate, Grand Marnier and Laphroaig, Burmese cat, with attitude, Brandy Alexander and a huge pig nosed Turtle - Miss Piggy, who ignores us, and miscellaneous others! A previous cat was Dom Pérignon, so you get the idea. We hangout with Actors because Irene, a Karate black belt, second Dan and proficient musician, was a model and actor in TV, Cinema and particularly theatre, in the 80’s and 90’s. Her brothers are well known actors, Lim Kay Tong and Lim Kay Siu and first cousin is multitalented pop star Dick Lee, the Simon Cowell of Singapore Idol.
Please share with us your favourite restaurant/s in Singapore. Local: Casa Roma, looks terrible, but food is of excellent quality and value. Best gnocchi pomodoro ever! We eat there every week. Friends: Yau Kui (Hokkien for “The Greedy”) who meet last Thursday of month. Fine dining: We are Commanderie de Bordeaux, so 4 courses with 12 wines of vertical or horizontal tasting, from the 70’s and 80’s. Irene is Officer of the KL branch of the Châine des Rotisseurs I am also Compagnie des Mousquetaires d’Armangac. Our leader, Capitaine Aymeri de Montesquiou d’Artagnan, is a direct descendant of d’Artagnan of Musketeer fame. It was not fiction! New Year’s Resolution to “Never eat on an empty stomach!”
We understand that you also have a passionate interest for skiing, how did you continue pursuing the interest while staying in the tropical Singapore? I skied Austria 55 years ago when skis were 225 cms, lace up boots loosened after first turn and bindings broke your leg rather than release. I am totally addicted. I ski wherever I go: Chile, New Zealand, Arizona, Arctic, Scotland, grass skiing Sussex Downs, even Snow City in Singapore. I am a trained off-piste guide (Val d’Isere) and trained Ski instructor (Whistler). I still have my Whistler place and go every year for 2 months.
Which are the places you went on your sail? Raced since 1980’s, but now cruise our 54 foot Bermuda rigged Cutter. Sailed Neptune Equator Regatta, Ambassadors cup (Third surprisingly) and the region. Routinely cruise South China Sea, Anambas, Tioman and Riau Islands, but NE Monsoon to Penang, Langkawi and Phuket. The winds are best then. Worst storms: force 9 (Anambas) and force 10 (Phuket ripping Staysail). Under water 10% of the time, as seas were so big.
THE BRITISH CLUB
How strong is your Will power? by David Pugh
A recent change in UK law means it’s even more important to make a will so that your loved ones inherit your assets.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR David Pugh has been living and working in South East Asia for four years and is responsible for The Fry Group’s activities in the region. David specialises in inheritance tax strategy, pension planning and portfolio management. He is a regular contributor of financial scenario articles for the Financial Times, an Associate of the Institute of Financial Planning and a Board Member of the British Chamber of Commerce, Singapore.
Dying intestate (dying without having made a will) leaves the State in charge of sharing out your estate. A little-spotted but important change in the law on October 1, 2014 affects anyone who dies intestate. It is called the Inheritance and Trustees Powers Act and has far reaching consequences for married couples and those in civil partnerships. Looking out for children The biggest impact will be for those who don’t have children. Previously, if a couple had no children, then the first £450,000 plus half of any remaining sum went to the surviving spouse. The other half was divided between the blood relatives of the deceased. But as of October, the surviving spouse receives the whole of the deceased’s assets, with nothing due to their wider relatives. In other words, any surviving parents or siblings will have no claim on the deceased’s assets if a will has not been made. This could have dire consequences for your wider family members. Another change in the law affects married couples and civil partners with children. Under the old regime, the surviving spouse took the first £250,000 of the deceased’s assets. Any children then received half of any remaining sum, either immediately or held in trust until they reached 18. The other half of the remainder also went to the children, but the surviving spouse would hold a ‘life interest’ in this sum. This meant that they could extract an income from this sum, but not the capital. For example, they could keep the sum in a savings account and just draw off any interest. Life interest scrapped However, since October 1, the concept of a ‘life interest’ no longer applies. The surviving spouse will receive the first £250,000 and also be fully entitled to half the remainder. The children will only receive the other half of the remainder, and cannot gain control of this until they reach the age of 18. For unmarried partners, nothing has changed but there is still a very important message couples who are not married nor in a civil partnership have no claims under the intestacy rules. Instead, all the assets go to the children, if there are any. If there are no children, then the assets are divided among the deceased’s blood relatives. This can lead to extreme complications if some of the assets are shared – for instance, if the co-habiting partners had bought a property together. Sadly, the idea of a ‘common law’ husband or wife has no foundation in law. The deceased will be treated as a single individual. Whatever your situation, the recent rule changes underline the importance of making a will to make sure your wishes are taken into account upon your death. At The Fry Group we have extensive experience in Will writing, identifying Inheritance Tax exposures and working with you to come up with sensible and workable solutions.

FATTORI WINERY AND CANALICCHIO DI SOPRA WINE & GOURMET DINNER Friday, 22 May 2015 • 7.30pm
$98.00+ Member • $108.00+ Guest This month, we will be featuring fine wines from both Fattori Winery and Canalicchio di Sopra. The history of Fattori wines was first documented at the beginning of the last century when family patriarch Antonio Fattori first began to plant vines in the hills outside the village of Terrossa. The winery is currently run by his grandson, also named Antonio, he has been running the winery since 1970 and has dedicated himself to the goal of making quality wines Canalicchio di Sopra, a family-owned winery is founded in the sixties. The Brunellos of the estate largely reflect the wine’s historical paradigm, a character derived, in part, through 36 months of cask aging and 1 year in bottle. Distinctions in climate and soil between the northern and southern parts of the Montalcino zone account for important differences. The northern zone, the area relative to Canalicchio, evidences a cooler climate than that of its southern counterpart; this northern terrain receives limited exposure to both the Mediterranean influence of Montalcino and the cooling breezes that the latter’s high altitude affords, resulting in wines that display impressive ripeness and structure. We are happy to have Mr Fabrizio Fichera, Export Director of Fattori Winery and Mr Francesco Ripaccioli, Owner of Canaliccio di Sopra with us this May to share with us their wines. The soft, spongy crumpets we know today, reputedly, come from the Victorian era and are very different from early, flat griddle cakes. A PI LOT ’S WATCH SH O U L D EN DU R E E VERY T H I N G T H E PI LOT DO E S . The Bremont MBIII is not like other pilot’s watches. It’s built in collaboration with British firm Martin-Baker, the pioneers of the ejection seat. At their test centre, the MBIII is strapped to the wrist of a crash-test dummy and shot out of the cockpit. Enduring forces of between 12G and 30G in the process. Then a vibration test simulates 30 years of continuous flying. But this doesn’t mean the MBIII is built for endurance at the expense of performance. Gurkha’s Inspire Craft Ladies
On 10th March, the craft ladies of the British club were delighted to receive a visit from the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Gurkha Contingent Singapore, Guy Norton and his colleagues, Drum Major Dorkumar Rai and Pipe Major Binjan Bahadur Pun. Guy gave a very interesting presentation on the work of the Gurkha Welfare Trust. The Gurkha Welfare Trust (GWT) was established in 1969 to provide a welfare pension to WWI and WWII soldiers who had worked for the British crown but was not qualified for a military pension. It works to relieve poverty, distress and provide community aid to old Gurkha soldiers and their families. As 25% of Nepalese people live below the poverty line, support from the GWT is vital. Veteran soldiers receive a pension of 100 SGD a month plus a winter fuel payment of 25 SGD. To enable these payments to get to the veteran soldiers, GWT volunteers spend weeks walking the hills to hand out the payments, thus ensuring each soldier gets his due, regardless of his age or disability. In addition to the funding pensions, the GWT also fund medical care and emergency grants to families with disabled dependents. They also run two residential homes for 52 vulnerable pensioners and support eight mobile units. Furthermore, they have built two schools, enabled 81 villages to have clean water and run two Gurkha welfare advice centres. As a result of this on going care in Nepal, the GWT spends approximately 70,000 SGD a day funding these activities. In Singapore, the Gurkhas provide a neutral police force to guard the Government and strategic sites. As one of The British Club’s chosen charities, the ladies of the craft section presented the GWT with a cheque for 2,800 SGD, which was half of the profit made from their craft stall at the Christmas Bazaar (the remaining half went to Riding for the Disabled). The craft ladies felt quite humbled that this was such a small amount in view of such a great need and are working with renewed vigour to ensure they have a fabulous stall this year to raise much more money for the GWT. If you would like to support this worthy cause, The Craft Ladies of the British Club welcome new members. They meet every Tuesday in the Tree Top Lounge from 10:30am onwards and are a friendly and supportive group of ladies of all ages. No skills are needed as the ladies are open to teaching new skills. This year is the 200-year anniversary of The Gurkhas servicing the British Crown and there will be many celebratory events. For information, please visit www.gurkha200.co.uk. Maggie Ashman Convenor

The Wind in the Willows and
The Incredible Book-Eating Boy! The Wind in the Willows June 12th to 14th
When Mole plucks up the courage to explore the Riverbank with his friend Ratty, nothing can prepare him for the adventure that awaits. Along with Badger and the irrepressible Mr Toad, the foursome career from one exploit to the next culminating in a battle not only to save Toad Hall, but their very way of life. Direct from the UK, this stage adaptation of The Wind in the Willows captures all the wit and bonhomie of Grahame’s original novel, and brings the delight of this literary classic to another generation of children and a touch of showbiz to the Riverbank.
The Incredible Book Eating Boy May 22nd to 24th 2015
Henry loves books. But Henry doesn’t like to read books, he likes to eat them. Big books, picture books, reference books… if it has pages, Henry chews them up and swallows (but red ones are his favourite). And the more he eats, the smarter he gets. He’s on his way to being the smartest boy in the world! But one day he feels sick to his stomach. And the information is so jumbled up inside, he can’t digest it! Can Henry find a way to enjoy books without using his teeth? A cast of three from Australia uses song, movement and puppetry to bring Oliver Jeffers’ quirky, beautiful and much loved story to life for children aged 3 to 8 and their families.
Both productions will be staged at the Drama Theatre at School of the Arts (SOTA). Tickets are now on sale; book them at any SISTIC outlet, official SISTIC website (www.sistic.com) or call the hotline 6348 5555. Try Squash! By The Boaster
While the A-grade team and some of the fitter members of the section play squash tri-weekly, others (like The Boaster) merely try weakly. Whatever your age, size or gender, squash is a game for all, and the section is happy to announce our “Try Squash 2015” event. This is an opportunity for those who used to play years ago with a wooden racquet, for those who have never tried but have secretly fancied it for a while, or for those who have never played but secretly fancy someone who does. There will be 3 sessions, from 2-4pm on the 3 Saturdays in June. The 13th will be mainly for children, the 20th for ladies and the 27th for men but if you can’t make it on the appropriate weekend please do come one of the other days. Please e-mail the convenor, Craig, at craig.telmer@telmera.com for more details, or look out for posters around the club.

In other news, our Friday Night Heroes, Matt Gyde’s SSRA veterans’ league squad, have had a storming first half of their season with multiple 4-0 wins and are now sitting close to the top of their table and are looking good for a place in the semi-finals.

2015 Season so far By Gaurav Lakhanpal
ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, the event where we get to witness cricket players display their greatest potential to win honour for their country. As I write this article we are watching the first semi-finals between South Africa and New Zealand. The game is very exciting at this stage. The 4 best teams are fighting to be crowned the world champion.

However, it was stopped with a great dive in the covers. He had another couple of shots, unfortunately it was being stopped by good fielding too. Some calmness was brought in by Simon and Mark Allison who delivered the killer blows by the hard hitting. After a 1 hour bus crawl in Bangkok traffic, we arrived slightly No! DHL brought back no.12 and he scored again. Another weary and had to change quickly for action. The pitch was the goal followed, to make the final score 11-6 down. Not quite an scene of heavy defeat from our previous Bangkok tour, so the embarrassment, but we were well beaten - full marks to all for omens were bad. continuing to fight despite the lost cause!
March 2015
Bangkok DHL, despite being an over-35 Veterans team had a number of very good and fast players and looked threatening every time they got the ball. We held out luckily for 15 minutes as DHL were twice denied by a post. Finally, the opponent’s no. 12 beat the offside trap and scored with an easy finish. The second came quickly and soon, we are 3 down. Captain Paul Hackett then let his football do the talking with a belter of a goal from 25 yards. However, two more goals for the opposition were scored in quick succession. Things were looking bleak. Just on the stroke of half-time our Co-Convener Robbie Allen buried one at the back post after a free kick from Captain Paul Hackett leading to a 5-2 down at half time. The first 20 minutes of the second half were a nightmare for the British Club. No.12 ran riot and scored 3 more goals and set-up another - 9-2 down! Fortunately they then took off no.12 and a few of the other better players. BCFC started to come into the game and Mike Hughes put in a number of good crosses and corners from the left.
Man of Match was a tight decision but goes to Paul Hackett for his leadership, fight and a brilliant goal. Day 2 • 21 March 2015 Report by Mike Thornton Match 2: British Club 1 – 4 Harrow School Staff (2nd XI) It’s Saturday, it’s day two of the tour. We gathered for the bus ride to play our double header against Harrow School. We arrived two and a half hours later. We started positively, spreading the ball around nicely for the first 5 minutes. The opposition were quick especially in the midfield. Andrew Moore & Mike Hughes had the unenviable task of having to deal with the opposition midfielders who were gliding rather than running and inevitably we went 1-0 down through good play down their right flank setting their winger free for an easy cross into the box and the striker making no mistake as he slotted past Paul Smith. Shortly after, Bill Palmer found himself under pressure from their striker who went through to make it 2-0. Things were looking bleak. However, we slowly began to hold the ball better, the wingers Stewart Frame & Dan Walker were playing wider allowing for more space in the middle and upfront Robbie Allen, Peter Tighe and Steve Hodge. Then, the Harrow midfielder spotted a gap and began to run before playing a well weighted ball between the two central defenders leading to a crisp finish from the forward making it 3-0 to Harrow. Not long after, a great ball through from Bill Palmer slotted a beauty under the keeper into the net, 3-1.
Our comeback started with an own goal from Mike Hughes’ Half time offered the welcomed respite against the hot sun. cross. The first casualty was Robin Thuillier. In a rare spate of possession, Robin found himself free down the right hand side, unmarked and in acres of space. What did he do? Impressively, he tackled himself. He tackled and win the ball back without being challenged by someone else other than Robin Thuillier. The next casualty was Paddy Flynn. Pads was in possession of the ball and beaten 2-3 players before giving it away. In trying to get the ball back, he lunged. It was dangerous and reckless, but at least he had been on the pitch longer than 38 seconds! Robin Thuillier, who later cut in from the left hand side, looked up, wrapped his foot around the ball and let fly with an audacious effort from 35 yards. It sailed through the air and cannoned back off the crossbar only to find Robbie Allen waiting underneath it with the goal at his mercy. With the deftest of touches, the ball rose and kept rising until it struck the bar and careered back down! A period of intense pressure from Harrow followed which was met by some resolute & commanding defending from Mike Thornton, Jan Jeffrey & Andy Petyt who managed to keep their pacey strikers at bay. We managed to shrug off their attacks for a short while and a ball was played through by Paddy Flynn to Robbie Allen who lofted the ball over his own keeper and into the net. Retribution and a 1-0 win for the British Club.
field with confidence that the second half would be better & it was. Although Harrow held a majority of possession, it was the BCFC who were creating the greater of the chances with James Morris & Robin Thuillier going close on a number of occasions. With another 90 minutes to play, changes were made again to save tired legs.
It is rare that you spend a longer time travelling to a football match on tour than it took to fly to the country where it is being held. It is even rarer to award the man of the match, for some excellent defending to Mike Thornton who it was agreed by all had a great game. Honourable mentions must go to Andy Petyt, Andrew Moore and Robin Thuillier for some excellent individual performances, as well as Chris Pardey in goal who didn’t put a foot wrong.
Ten minutes from time, the Harrow number 10 (their best player), The Evening came up from 25-30 yards with a brilliant finish into the top right hand corner...fair play! The final whistle went with the score 4-1 In summary, I just want to say a few thank you’s. Firstly thanks must to Harrow. go to Mark Billington for helping to source Saturday’s games; Jan Jeffrey for organizing the transportation, James Morris for Some admiral performances from Stewart Frame, Andrew tireless match day organization and shadow co-ordination; Moore & Peter Tighe however for nimble footwork, well taken Hodgey for the excellent Tour Kit, Stewart Frame for the Friday goal and an overall excellent contribution, Man of the Match night entertainment and adding a bit of class to the Tour, Nick goes to Steve Hodge Challoner & Peter Schwemm for Tour Photography and to Jim Rowan who is making a late charge for Poet Laureate 2015. Day 3 • 21 March 2015 Report by Robbie Allen Match 3: British Club 1 – 0 Harrow School Staff (2nd XI) As this will be my last tour with the British Club for a while as I am moving some 15,000km away around the globe to New York. Match 2 on Saturday was actually highly uneventful. For large I’ve been on 8 Tours (my first being Bangkok where I was the periods of the game the British Club were chasing down the Harrow School Staff all over the pitch, struggling to get hold youngest by 16 years) and played hundreds of games, scoring of the ball. At this point one of two goals here and there and missing many more, but credit needs to go to it has been a fantastic experience and a privilege to play with Jim Rowan, who still had everyone who has donned a British Club Shirt & it is comforting a lot of energy in him to know that no matter where British Club Alumni are around the despite playing on Friday world, there will always be a slot for them at 5pm on a Saturday and after a post-match at Turf City. 2 hour treadmill session while the others were in the pool. Are You Fit for Tennis? Another thing to work on is muscle tone, particularly those big muscles like quads and the gluteus maximus, because unsurprisingly, the power lies in the backside. Serena Williams is neither lean nor the most athletic-looking of the top players but she continues to dominate women’s tennis. GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Golf Section News
March Medal
Standing on the tee at Orchid Country Club, I commented to my playing partner how close we were to Tanjong Puteri Golf Course (which is in Malaysia.) In reply, he acknowledged he had recently played there and that it remained one of the few ‘playable courses in Johor.’ In another recent conversation, I asked some friends to join me in a game at Poresia (also in Johor) and the reply I received was very negative. My reason for wanting to play there was to recce’ for our up and coming May medal. However, after reading online reviews and horror stories about course condition and safety, I have pulled the plug on Poresia, switching the venue to Ponderosa, which has favourable reviews.
Sadly the bumper turn-outs of January and February could not be sustained. Both the Hong Kong Seven’s and World Cup Cricket Final conspired to reduce our field to a paltry seven. Nether the less, the ridiculous low scoring of the previous month continues to embarrass our robust handicap system. Rocking in on a staggering 48 stableford points was yours truly, Nic Merrow-Smith, sneaking in ahead of a rather quiet, John Bussell, who thought he had secured the win with a personal best gross 92 and 43 points. I encourage all who play golf in the hope of one day putting together an extraordinary round, pray about it and believe; one day it may just happen when you least expect it. I say that after starting my round with a quadruple boggie on the first hole and going on to break 80 for the first time with a gross 78! Congratulations to Mark Nikkel, for clinching one of the nearest pin prizes and sinking his birdie putt. The Medal was played at Palm Springs, Batam; squawls and all.

So what is the relevance of these observations? We are very fortunate to be blessed with golf courses in Singapore that are safe, well maintained and affordable. As our medal games are booked at corporate rates, the green fees can be very reasonable. However, there is often an upfront booking fee to reserve the flights. This cost is shared, so naturally the more golfers that participate in our medals, the lesser the charge to each golfer. And there in a nutshell is my appeal to all golfers; join our affordable, safe and enjoyable medals and let’s enjoy great Singapore hospitality and exceptional golf on our precious courses. We still have SGC Serapong (June), Seletar CC (September) and RCC Lake (November) on the calendar. These are all wonderful, unique courses where you can enjoy an afternoon out of your working week to refresh and rejuvenate the spirit. Naturally we welcome non-section members and guests too; happy golfing.
The Inter Social Club Golf Tournament 2015 got underway on Friday 27th March at Orchid Country Club, hosted by the Chinese Swimming Club. Our combined American Club British Club team failed to pick up any prizes this time but have made our intentions known with some fine personal scores. Division A; Robert Wells (36 points) and Nic Merrow-Smith (31), Division B; Nina Sung (23) and John Sayers (27), Division C; Oliver Stoffell (33) and John Bussell (32) and finally Aaron Warnke (36) and Greg Chirieleison (36). The overall team prize on the night went to the Chinese Swimming Club who placed well across all divisions. To challenge for honours, we really need 4 players (rather than 2) in each division, so please get in touch if you want to participate in some inter-club rivalry and support our fledgling team.
JCC Monday Night League The Monday night league sees a regular field of over 100 golfers and 26 teams vying for honours. Steve Settle holds the reigns and the guys are currently in a commendable 10th place. Week 5 was a field day for the Team BC with Charles Pierron and Oliver Stoffell picking up a team prize and Deke Pedrick winning the longest putt prize. Keep up the good work guys and let’s see you back near the top of the table real soon.
