I have now been your President for a year and I thank you all for your support of the Club over that period. On 28 September, the Club held a dinner in appreciation of our Best of British 2016 sponsors. We would not have been able to deliver the resounding success without their support. Apart from the activities and events that provided great enjoyment of our Members and their guests, over the course of the Best of British 2016 period, The British Club raised $80,000 for its two

TIPS TO MEET THE SG$590,000 COST OF EXPAT SCHOOL FEES By David Pugh

For many expats in Singapore, a priority on arriving in a new country is to make sure that the children settle quickly into a new school schedule. For most, particularly non-permanent residents, that means international school and that comes at a cost. Research by the CEBR for The Fry Group last year showed that school fees in Singapore had increased by over 23 percent over the past five years, bringing the cost of schooling one child, from reception to graduation, to SG$590,000. With expat packages becoming much less common, school fees are often the major expense for expat families. A degree of planning can help to make international school more affordable. 1. Start saving early If you have any intention of staying in Singapore it pays to start saving early. If you put aside money for schooling and invest it in a balanced portfolio, the compounding effects can give you a good head start. As a non-UK resident you won’t be able to add any further contributions to any ISA’s you may have back at home however you can keep existing ISA’s open. UK residents can utilise their ISA allowances, while non-UK residents can utilise a suitable liquid alternative with no lock in periods or exit penalties. 2. Be realistic about your finances and plan accordingly Picking schools is a major decision and parents naturally want to give their children the best possible head start in life. This is particularly the case if as an expat you face moving countries more than once during your career. You want the disruption to your child’s education to be minimal. You need to be realistic about what you can afford while planning investments and savings for the long term (remember you have university to pay for too). Some considerations include keeping children in local pre-school for longer, and applying for local Singapore schools for all or part of their education - not always easy when you are shifting between IB and local school systems and if you don’t have permanent residence. There are even scholarships available with some international and local schools though these are quite limited. 3. Use tax planning to your advantage Where Inheritance Tax (IHT) is an issue for British expat families’, grandparents in the UK could consider passing on wealth to their grandchildren now, by contributing towards school fees, ideally out of their income. Everyone is currently entitled to pass on £325,000 of wealth IHT free. This is known as the ‘nil-rate band’. Transfers of assets above this threshold are currently subject to IHT at the rate of 40 percent, in many circumstances. From April 2017, an additional nil-rate band will be phased in over a four-year period. This will be available to individuals who pass on their home, or assets of an equivalent value (if downsized or sold after 8 July 2015), to a direct descendant on death. After the four years the additional nil rate band will reach the level of £175,000, per person. By 2020/21, a married couple or civil partnership could therefore escape IHT on up to £1m of their wealth. Giving to family members is one way reduce the tax burden, albeit that you need to survive the gift for seven years to ensure it remains outside of your estate. There is no doubt that for many expat children the time spent at international school can be formative, giving them a much broader perspective on the world and set them on a firm footing for the future. Planning now for paying school fees is becoming more and more important. “OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan

GUY FAWKES NIGHT In 1605, Guy Fawkes, an English Yorkshireman, with his followers, planned to blow up London’s Parliament House, using gunpowder, when King James I and his Cabinet Ministers gathered there on 5 November for the State Opening of Parliament. This defiance was in protest at the surge of Protestantism over Roman Catholicism. Fortunately, the plot was discovered before the gunpowder was lit. Since then, Guy Fawkes has infamously lent his name to peaceful thanksgiving celebrations held each 5 November. Bonfires, fireworks and burning the Guy (an effigy of the treason leader) are part and parcel of the celebrations, symbolising what could have happened had the plot not been stopped. Also known as Bonfire Night, there are community observances, including in London where night skies reverberate with lights and sounds, as well as private parties in back yards of homes. Probably the biggest celebration is held in Lewes, East Sussex, where street processions bring the historic drama to life utilising costumes and traditions alongside the fireworks display and bonfire. Revellers enjoy roasting chestnuts and sausages in the embers of fires – as well as keeping warm in the chilly night air. Toffee-apples on sticks are popular, plus sandwiches and cakes rolled into pinwheel shapes signifying fire-crackers, with cups of hot cocoa to sip on. Even now, prior to the ceremonial State Opening of Parliament in London by the Queen on 5 November, her Yeoman of the Guard conduct a search of the stately building before dignitaries arrive and proceedings begin. Celebrating

Mountbatten Room’s 11th Anniversary

Domaines Barons de Rothschild WINE & GOURMET DINNER Friday, 4 November 2016

$98.00+ per Member • $108.00+ per Guest Experience a wine journey with Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) this November at the Mountbatten Room. Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) has made excellence in the vineyard and wine-making practices the basis of its growth. Château Lafite Rothschild was the start of the DBR (Lafite) Group. It was the first Château acquired by the Rothschild family in 1868 and inspires and guides the winegrowing practices at the various vineyards: the expertise and the tradition upheld for five generations by the Rothschild family are applied to all of the properties with the objective of producing high quality wines full of finesse and elegance in the “Lafite Spirit”. “The Lafite Spirit” is based on a rich past and a tradition rooted in the Bordeaux soil, on the handing down of knowledge from generation to generation and on the excellence and refinement of the wines that they help to produce. “The Lafite Spirit” is also the pioneering spirit which has led the Group to open up to the world, establishing vineyards in new regions and producing new, high quality wines. Named in honour of the late Lord Louis Mountbatten, November marks the Mountbatten Room’s 11th Anniversary since its redesign and relocation to the second floor of the Main Clubhouse. Taking pride of place in the restaurant today is a specially framed letter from the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the Honourable Patricia Mountbatten, Lord Mountbatten’s eldest daughter, expressing her delight and thanks to the Club for choosing to name the restaurant after her father. In celebration of its 11th year anniversary, the Mountbatten Room is pleased to bring two exceptional Wine Dinners this November.

Friday, 18 November 2016 People have enjoyed drinking wine for thousands of years since its ancient origins in Mesopotamia, near presentday Iran. Italian and French wines are amongst the best and Italy is the largest producer of wine in the world. This makes sense because the Romans made the most contributions to the ancient art of viniculture. The Greeks, who settled in southern Italy and Sicily, exported the art of wine-growing to Italy. They were so impressed with the mild Italian climate, which was perfect for producing wines, that they called Italy. Oenotria, or the land of trained vines. The Etruscans, who settled in central Italy, also produced wines. The Romans improved the techniques that the Greeks and Etruscans used. Today, Italian wines are considered by critics to be amongst the best in the world. As there are twenty different regions to choose from, each with different varieties, it is never difficult to find a fine Italian wine! We have Mr Luca Maida with us this month to showcase his fine wines. Luca was born in Rome and graduated in Italy in Social Science. However, with a strong passion for wines, he decided to join the wine business. Before coming to Singapore, Luca has been in the food and beverage management for over 10 years in both Dubai and Hong Kong. Luca is also a certified Sommelier with a WSET Level 3.

SWIMMING:

SWIMMING SECTION REPORT

By Helen Tynan

Firstly we would like to pass on our congratulations to those Masters swimmers who competed very successfully in the Annual Singapore Masters swim meet held at the OCBC Aquatics Centre on 23 October.

As always, there are lots of things happening in November and December in the swim section. Our next Barracudas Neptune League swimming competition will be on Sunday 27 November. This meet will be held at the Swiss Club. We will be hosting our first ever Learn to Swim fun gala on Saturday, 3 December. This will give our younger swimmers a chance to compete in a fun, nurturing environment in the 20-metre lap pool. Details of how to enter will be emailed to all the Learn to Swim section in the coming weeks.

BARRACUDAS GOT TALENT On 14 December we will be hosting our very own “Barracudas Got Talent” evening. All of our Barracudas are welcome to enter whether you can sing, dance, do tricks or simply entertain! Look out for the “Barracudas Got Talent” posters around the Club coming soon with details of how to enter. This event will also include our yearly awards evening where we will be celebrating the achievements of all our swimmers and announcing the 2016 Barracuda of the Year and the 2016 Rookie of the Year. As this goes to press we wish our masters the very best of luck in their quest to swim around the Gili Islands. The challenge will require them to swim around three islands over three days totaling over 21km. Watch this space for a full write-up on their adventure. As we approach the Monsoon season, please remember that there will be dry land training available for our Barracudas should the weather prevent us from using the main pool. Look out for the dry land training times. As always we welcome any feedback you have, so please email us at swimming@britishclub.org.sg.

SPORTS & FITNESS SQUASH:

BRAINS OF BRITAIN – THE BC SPORTS QUIZ By The Boaster We begin this month’s squash report with a Public Service Announcement. Many of you from other sections may be anxiously leafing through the back end of this magazine looking for the results of the Club’s recent inaugural sports quiz. You may not have heard the result from your own section committee, for the simple reason that they have nothing to boast about. Squash, however, has plenty to boast about since SQUASH WON. The Black Ball Boasters not only took the prize for the best team name, but also the grand prize at the end of the night. Those of you who spend your leisure time going up & down and up & down a swimming pool in a variety of uncomfortable ways, those who strive to hit a small white ball into an equally small hole half a mile away, or those who spend Saturday afternoons hoofing a pig’s bladder around a field . . . better luck next time. Still feeling the glow of victory from the night before (or perhaps just the after-effects of the butter chicken) the BC squashers travelled to the Padang the next day for the annual ‘Ashes’ mega-fixture against the Cricket Club. 14 matches were scheduled covering the full range of skill and fitness the section has to offer. The day didn’t start well with The British Club 4-1 down after five matches. Strong wins from Craig Telmer, Jim Mitchell, James Bauly and the force of nature that is Charlie Thomas dragged us back to 5-5, however. The next two both lost close matches leaving us two down with Ben Kiggell and Vinayak to play. Vinayak competed hard but lost 2-1 and soon after Ben went down by the same score. The Ashes were surrendered but we had a great afternoon and a great evening thanks to the usual fine SCC hospitality.

Lending the trophy to SCC until next year

Ashes action

We have also started our COSMO season which features home & away matches against six other clubs. We won our opener 3-2 against Serangoon Gardens thanks to a stirring five game win by Craig (him again) and lost our second to The Tanglin Club 2-3 and then got back our mojo with a win over The American Club. We are currently third in the table. Our final recent highlight has been a feat of amazing stamina. Keith Carpenter, stalwart of the section for as long as any of us can recall, turned 65 and celebrated, fittingly, on court. Well played Keith! Happy 65th Birthday, Keith

JUNIOR SQUASH AFTER SCHOOL The British Club is experimenting with a 15-week Introduction to Squash program running on Wednesday afternoons for 90 minutes in conjunction with a nearby school. There are currently nine boys and two girls participating. Racquets and eye-wear are provided and coaching is by an experienced instructor assisted by a member of the BC squash section.

We would like to extend this programme to the children of Club Members. Do you have a child between 10 and 16 who spends too much time on the iPhone, Xbox and PS4? Would you like to have them running around on a squash court for 90 minutes every Wednesday after school from January to April next year? Is this worth the estimated cost of $250 to $300 (depending on numbers)? If you have nodded your head ‘Yes’ three times, then please register your interest by emailing squash@britishclub.org.sg. A minimum number of 10 juniors is required.

CRICKET:

BRITISH CLUB CRICKET SECTION UPDATE By Gaurav Lakhanpal The British Club Cricket Section joined the first ever Sports Quiz this year at the Club. Table 1 was McNee’s Masterminds with the cream of intellectuals from the section while the other table was Bignell’s Brainiacs filled with the bottom of the barrel of the section. Both tables started well with Table 1 taking the early lead while the result at the end wasn’t as favourable to McNee’s Masterminds, who finished last at the quiz and received the wooden spoons... I would say better luck next time. :) Final between BC & Cargill Back to cricket news then. We played the last of the best of 3 games for the D’Souza Cup, with the scores level at 1-1. The third game was virtually the finals! Cargill batted first and put a massive total of 211 all out riding on the back of Will’s 51 off 36 balls and Ajay’s 43 off 31 balls. While down the order two young boys from Cargill, George and Kynan scored 34 and 32 respectively. BC’s bowling was off the mark with all bowlers going for runs except for Gary Smith who picked up 5 wickets for a measly economy rate of 2.8 in 5 overs. The moment of the game came when Gaurav Lakhanpal took a chance and caught and bowled a ball which bounced twice before reaching the batsman who returned an easy chance back; we had to check the rules of cricket to declare the ball legal as dead ball is when it bounces more than 2 times before reaching the batsman. The British Club’s batting started well with Richard Wall scoring 42 at the top of the order and Paul Allison 16. Ross Marsh and Simon Bignell both scored 31 each but BC missed the power hitting in the middle and came up 30 short of the total to lose the D’Souza Cup to Cargill this year. The Vets League has started and The British Club had played 2 games already with 1 loss and 1 walkover against Misfits, which helps with the points. First game of Vets League was against SCC, who batting first, scored a massive 233 for the loss of 5 wickets. Andy, Suresh and Nick Power retired and Sukanti was 28 but not out. Our bowling skills were tested in the game with the exception of Simon Bignell who bowled 3 overs picking up 3 for 17 runs. The British Club’s batting started well with Ross Marsh and Mark Prendiville giving a good start, with Ross scoring 33 and Mark scoring 50 out of 34. Shane Sampson and Simon Bignell batted well in the middle, scoring 26 and 36 respectively but again with no power hitting in the middle we only managed 180 in 30 overs, losing by 53 runs. Below are the current season stats. It’s getting very tight for the batting honours trophy. There are also some changes in the bowling honours list with Benno running away with a 5-wicket margin.

Batting Honours: Todd Buck – 331 Ross Marsh – 316 David Bennett – 261 Simon Bignell - 229 Shane Sampson – 226

Bowling Honors: David Bennett – 19 Rohit Bhatnagar - 14 Paul Twine – 14 Paul McNee – 13 Simon Bignell - 12

Bignell’s Braniacs finished 3rd :)

TENNIS:

STYLE TIPS By Mitali Das Our very own Junior Convenor Liza Rowan demonstrates how you don’t need to buy a whole tennis kit to look super stylish. You can coordinate your separates to make them pop like she has done here. Liza has masterfully colourblocked her look with primary colours to get a dramatic on-court effect. Colourblocking has been very en trend the last few years and is basically about wearing multiple solid colours. You can pair up to three solid colours together. However, either pair primary or pastel colours but not both. There are a few rules to colourblocking. First, think of colours on a wheel. This helps you understand how they match or perhaps more importantly don’t match. Think of the Mercedes-Benz three point star with the primary colours blue, red and yellow. Halfway between red and yellow will be orange, halfway between yellow and blue will be green, and halfway between blue and red will be purple. From there, you can fill in all the shades of the rainbow. From there you can decide if your ensemble will be complementary colours (shades from the opposite side of the wheel), monochromatic colours (the same colour in different shades), neutral colours (white, black, greys, and browns) or analogous colours (shades that neighbour each other on the colour wheel). As you can see there are a variety of possibilities and at the end of the day it’s all about having fun in tennis.

GOLF:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith NEWS FROM THE GREENS Bali Tour 2016. What a fantastic event for the lucky group who signed up for our first and certainly not last tour to Bali. Three nights in a gorgeous villa, four games including two matches, wonderful hospitality from the gents at Raffles Bali Golf and the benefit of a great tour guide in Rishi Kumar of Ruci Golf.

At New Kuta Golf Club; Bill Christie, John Hancock, Nic Merrow-Smith, Brain Hill and John Bussell

John and Bill enjoying the spectacular morning light of Villa Cantek

I’m sure the ‘footy’ boys will enjoy this one, Rujak at Bali National; not a beer in sight!

Rishi Kumar, John Hancock, John Bussell, Brian Hill, Bill Christie, Nic Merrow-Smith and Ravi Kumar all set to explore the stunning Bali National.

Bali National is a world class championship course; strategic bunkering, carries over water and fairways you literally want to roll all over.

Here’s what everyone had to say: Nic Merrow-Smith, “Returning to Nirwana Golf to play on their stunning course with friends who’s company I enjoy, was a dream come true for me, and that was just the start. Our hosts, Raffles Bali Golf and in particular Club Captain, Peter Manz, were fantastic and generous in every way.” Our tour coincided with the Ryder Cup in the USA, and our only chance of watching it at the villa was to find a live stream on the internet. This lead to a bandwidth crisis and calls to “stay off the Wi-Fi” from John Hancock as we desperately tried to catch some of the action. The venerable Bill Christie after 4 rounds in 4 days as we closed out our match win on Sunday, 4 & 3 with a Bintang: “Yes, I’ll have one of those now.” Bill summed up the weekend in a note the following day, “Thanks for a great weekend in Bali, Superb villa, great golf courses, abundant food and drink. Good company. Who could ask for anything more.” Brian Hill had set the tone early: “Thanks guys, I really enjoyed the weekend. I’m off to Bali National for some more punishment.” From John Bussell, who with his partner Hilary, provided the fantastic Villa Cantek for us to swoon over: “Thank you all for your company and support through the last three days and the golf. Very enjoyable, although somewhat fatigued.” And from Peter Manz of Raffles Bali Golf: “Hi Nicholas, it was a pleasure hosting you all here with us over the 2 days. Final results are: Day 1 Individual Matchplay: Raffles 15 points Singapore 3 points Day 2 Four Ball Better Ball Stableford: Singapore 6 points Raffles 3 points Overall Raffles 18 points to 9 points. A PI LOT ’S WATCH SH O U L D EN DU R E E VERY T H I N G T H E PI LOT DO E S . The Bremont MB range is built in collaboration with British firm Martin-Baker, the pioneers of the ejection seat. At their test centre, the watches are strapped to the wrist of a crash-test dummy and shot out of the cockpit. Enduring forces of between 12G and 30G in the process. But this doesn’t mean the MB is built for endurance at the expense of performance. It’s a beautifully-engineered mechanical chronometer certified 99.998% accurate by COSC.
