2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE
Dear Members, With summer still seemingly just behind us, we are fast approaching the end of the year. Before long, the Christmas festivities will begin and the Club will be providing a string of events and activities for everyone. On 27 September, the Club held a dinner in appreciation of our Best of British 2017 sponsors. We would not have been able to deliver the many activities and events over the BoB period without their support. The events helped us raise $65,000 for our two adopted charities, Riding for the Disabled Singapore and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. We are delighted with the outcome and would like to thank everyone for their strong support.

The Best of British provides us with an opportunity to build our ties with the broader community beyond the boundaries of the Club. The event also allowed us to strengthen our engagement with the British community in Singapore and we continue to enjoy strong relationships with the British High Commission, the British Chamber of Commerce and the British Council. Best of British 2018 will be the 6th anniversary for the event and we hope to receive the same strong support from our sponsors, members and guests once again. This month also marks the anniversary of the completion of the renovation of the kitchen behind the Windsor Arms. The final touches to the front of house are just being completed with the arrival of new tables and some attractive and unique artwork; more on this over the coming months. I hope that Members and guests like the new environment and I hope that you will continue your support for the restaurant. We are receiving excellent feedback on the lunch time offerings so this is something you might like to try. With Christmas just around the corner, every member should be holding a copy of this year’s Festive Supplement. It contains key information on the various events and celebrations taking place at the Club. If you do not have one, don’t panic, you may visit www.britishclub.org.sg to view and book any of the festive promotions and events. Don’t take too long though as the events are always popular and the early bird offers are ending soon. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and the very best for 2018. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

SAINT ANDREW’S DAY
Saint Andrew’s Day, on 30th November, heralds the arrival of Christmas, at least for this writer; the Sunday closest to Saint Andrew’s Day is the first Sunday of Advent, leading to Christmas Day. Saint Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, was born in Galilee in the year sixBC, a fisherman, who was the first of the 12 Apostles of Jesus, and is believed to have been crucified on a diagonalcross in the year 60AD. The Scottish national flag, which flies proudly from buildings on Saint Andrew’s Day, depicts a white diagonal-shape cross on a blue background. The United Kingdom’s Union Jack flag, in red, white and blue colours, combines three crosses (England, Ireland and Scotland), the blue embodying Saint Andrew’s cross.
Social events take centre-stage on this day, with traditional Scottish dancing, singing, bagpipemusic, and feasting. Haggis, Scotland’s national dish, never fails to make an appearance. Minced offal from red-deer or sheep is mixed with oatmeal, onion, seasonings, stock and suet, before being sewn into a bag fashioned from the animal’s stomach, then boiled for several hours before being served minus the casing (stomach). Traditional accompaniments are tart-tasting sauces, gravy, mashed potatoes, mashed turnips and bread. Having tried haggis in Edinburgh, I feel it is an acquired taste. Saint Andrew’s buns are also customarily eaten, enjoyed for the slightly sweet taste of the soft oblong bread. The beverage of choice is, naturally, a dram of uplifting Scotch whisky! MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 9
MEMBER IN THE
SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are most pleased to feature Andy Goodwin and his wife Kathleen. Andy and Kathleen joined the Club in September 2016. He currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer (International) of Surbana Jurong Pte. 1) As a big name in urban development and infrastructure, can you share with us any secret to keeping relevant in today’s fast-paced industry? In my experience, the three best ways to keep up to date with what is happening in the urban and infrastructure space is through; • Networking with colleagues, clients and partners in the industry • Reading reports, journals and magazines • Keeping abreast of economic and political changes in the countries in which we operate 2) What was your main reason for joining The British Club? Myself and Kathleen have lived in many countries over the last 20 years, and The British Club offers us the opportunity to meet new people, to have a place we can relax and a place where we can enjoy a variety of social and sport events 3) Being a CEO of a large organisation like Surbana Jurong does come with its set of stressful situations. How do you cope with it? I am fortunate that I can easily switch from my work life to my personal life. I make sure I spend time with my family as a priority, and most important, I believe in some form of physical exercise which helps cleanse the mind. I am also extremely fortunate that I have a wife who understands the demands of my job, which really helps. 4) How do you balance work and family life in fast-paced Singapore? When I am not working or travelling, I make it a priority to spend quality time with Kathleen. Luckily we enjoy the same activities – both being keen golfers, so it is very easy to find that balance. 5) Lastly, if you could name one thing that you like about the Club, what would it be? The Club offers something for everyone, which makes it very vibrant and never boring.

INVESTMENT DECISIONS By David Pugh, Director, The Fry Group
Finance is not only about figures: Human behaviour and psychology are behind 80% of investments decisions According to many financial professionals, behaviour is the largest single reason for poor investment decisions. The instincts that keep us alive can also work against us in the world of finance. The basic human emotions of greed and fear have driven investor psychology for centuries. One example which gripped England in the 18th century, is The South Sea Bubble. It was one of the earliest recorded stock market crashes and gave rise to the term ‘stock market bubble’. In 1720, there was euphoria surrounding shares in the South Sea Trading Company, including one of the most influential scientists of all time, Sir Isaac Newton. Sensing the market was getting out of hand, he sold £7,000 of his shares netting a 100% profit. However, seeing the price continue to rise and his friends’ profits with it, he couldn’t help himself and reinvested at a higher price, eventually selling out and losing £20,000 (equivalent to £3m today). He famously quipped that he “could calculate the motions of the heavenly bodies, but not the madness of the people”. And for the rest of his life, he forbade anyone to say South Sea in his presence. There have been countless books written by investment gurus on the art to successful investing. We know we should buy low and sell high but most people do exactly the opposite because they become emotionally involved when it is their own money. Let’s face it, if a right-brained genius such as Sir Isaac Newton couldn’t control his emotions when investing his money, what hope remains for the rest of us mere mortals? So, if you do want to take the emotion out of investing take heed from the words of Warren Buffet: “We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy when others are fearful.” With this in mind, here’s some more pointers: • Avoid the latest ‘hot tip’, whether it is technology stock, gold or the London property market. By the time everyone is talking about it, the smart investors have made their money, are taking their profits and moving on. • Never be frightened to take profits. • Don’t be rushing to cash in when the price falls. Remember it is a ‘paper loss’ and by cashing in you will crystallise the loss. If you hang on in there, in many cases the price will pick up as markets enter the recovery phase. • However, it is important to recognise that sometimes a bad investment is a bad investment and you just have to cut your losses. • Think long term. Don’t try to time the markets, but understand that it is more to do with time ‘in’ the markets. And if you feel that making your own investment decisions is just not you, ask a professional adviser to recommend a diversified portfolio designed to match your risk profile and investment objectives.

ALCOHOL TASTING DINGLE GIN AND VODKA TASTING Friday, 17 November • 6.30pm to 10.30pm
Dingle Distillery is located on the Wild Altantic Way – a 2,500km journey winding its way around the west coast of Ireland.
Dingle Original Gin @ $118 (U.P. $238+)
Dingle Original Gin is the product of a considerable amount of research, both technical and historical, and experimentation. Their aim was to create a totally unique gin, one which worked within the great tradition of gin distilling but which also came with a degree of innovation. The spirit is collected at 70% abv and then cut to 42.5% abv using the purest of water which they draw from their own well, 240 feet below the distillery.
Dingle Pot Still Distillery Vodka @ $118 (U.P. $228)
The still is charged with 500 litres of the finest, purest, grain alcohol and is then distilled for a fifth and final time. Dingle Distillery Vodka is most unusual in being quintuple distilled. The fifth distillation makes a huge difference. You can taste it in the incredible purity that is as pure as the environment where they make it. There’s just a touch of sweetness and creamy texture that takes a lot of people by surprise.
THE DALMORE WHISKY TASTING Friday, 8 December • 6.30pm to 10.30pm
In 1839, Alexander Matheson searched for the perfect distillery location, but his criteria were not the same as others. Some had already chosen to build their distilleries in the Speyside valley, due to its established transport links and more hospitable climate. But Matheson was not swayed by creature comforts. His only concern was where he could find the best natural resources to make the finest whisky. So he settled on an isolated area on the banks of Cromarty Firth, laid bare to the harsh winds of the North Sea. On this wild land, Matheson started from scratch, building everything from warehouses to railways. Matheson forged his own path and by doing so, ensured The Dalmore would always have its own unique character and taste. This December, we will be doing a tasting at the Windsor Arms. In celebration of its 12th year anniversary, the Mountbatten Room is pleased to bring two exceptional Wine Dinners this November.
With Guest Chef Forlino Osvaldo
Wine Gala Dinner Friday, 24 November
$118+ Wine Connoisseur & Gourmet Club Member $128+ per Member • $138.00+ per Guest What better way to enjoy Italian Wine with authentic Italian food prepared by an Italian Chef? Originating from the Piedmont region in north-west Italy, Chef Osvaldo Forlino remembered fondly his first lesson in cooking began on the lap of his loving mother, Mama Forlino, as a little boy. Growing up in a closely knitted family on the family farm in his hometown Piedmonte, Italy, chef Osvaldo is influenced with using only the freshest, best ingredients in his cooking and serving food with plenty of love, just as his mother would cook for him. Chef Osvaldo’s father opened the first humble family restaurant, “Forlino”, in Alessandria, Italy in 1948. From 1988 to 1995, before taking over and manage the family restaurant, Osvaldo and his wife, Patrizia earned the Michelin Star working in Da Guido Restaurant in Costigliole d’Asti, Piedmont, and during the stint, they cooked lunch for former French President Jacques Chiraq in Turin, Italy. When they took over the “Forlino” restaurant, the satellite channel Gambero Rosso came in Montacuto to make a show with the French 3 Michelin-starred chef Paul Bocuse tasting their dishes for a week. Later, together with Italian celebrity chef Gianfranco Vissani, they collaborate a Christmas Cooking TV Show on the national television. Determined to spread the flavours of his hometown, Piedmonte, Chef Osvaldo travelled to Singapore in September 2005 to work as Italian Chef de Cuisine at Grand Hyatt, Singapore. SPORTS & FITNESS 57 SQUASH:
THAT WINNING FEELING By The Boaster The Cosmo League is now well under way, with the BC claiming four wins out of five to start the season, leaving us second in the table. The first three victories were all 3-2 meaning some exciting finishes and heroic wins, notably from James Bauley against a very tough opponent from the Dutch Club and Matt Gyde, Paul Nikkel and Nick Fell, who dug us out of a 0-2 hole against Serangoon. Most recently we crushed the Cricket Club, with exceptional wins for Craig Telmer against a very good player, and Matt again. As well as the weekly Cosmo matches, it’s the time of year for our inter-club mega fixtures. First was squash’s version of the War of the Roses. We may not have the Grand Old Duke of York and his ten thousand men, but fourteen BC squashers marched down the hill to take the battle to The Tanglin Club on their home courts. As the afternoon unfolded, the red roses of the British Club had the early edge over the all-white roses of Tanglin, but Tanglin fought back with wins over both of the BC’s co-captains, Craig Telmer and Andrew Vine, and other results began to go their way. As the 26 other players began their post-match rehydration it was down to Wing to save the day. Happily he ran his opponent into the ground and at 2-2 the Tanglin man raised the white flag and retired injured. The fixture ended in an honourable draw at 14-14, meaning the British Club retains the trophy and will defend it at home in 2018. As ever, Tanglin provided magnificent hospitality and rivalry soon turned to revelry.

MERLION LEAGUE 3 HELD AT TANGLIN CLUB by Rebecca Turley
On Saturday 9th September, the Barracudas fielded a very strong team to participate in The Merlion League 3. Out of 63 events contested, our swimmers won a total of 20 Gold, 27 Silver and 25 Bronze medals. Team spirit within the Barracudas is very strong and throughout the meet it was fantastic to see the team congratulating and supporting each other. For many of our younger swimmers, it was their first time representing The Barracudas; well done to all of you. Please check out the BC Facebook page as we will now be posting photos of the Barracudas in action at our Competitive meets.

62 SPORTS & FITNESS TENNIS:
TENNIS SECTION REPORT
By Liza Rowan
We kicked off the season with our usual Welcome Back Social, and as you can see from the smiles below, a lot of fun was had along with some great tennis play! Watch out for more social play over the coming months – especially our very popular Red Hat Social before Christmas – Santa may surprise us with a different theme this year! Everyone is welcome to join these events, regardless of game experience – so do join in the fun. Our ladies WITS teams across various divisions are well into their second season of the year – we’ll know shortly whether any are winners of their division and progress to the next level. Unfortunately it also works the other way, but we’re confident that all our teams will do well! The kids Lacoste league is also drawing to a close for the year, but that means another awards night which is the social highlight of the season. This will be combined with another coaches exhibition as they battle it out to see who is King of the Court. The excitement is second only to Wimbledon when Murray or Konta are playing, so do head down to Scores for guaranteed court side thrills. As always, we welcome all club members to try their hand at tennis, be that match play, our internal box or ladder competitions, seasonal socials, or simply a hit with friends on court. All ways smashing good fun!
