• PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • challenges to those of us that have been involved in the governance of the club for some time. I am pleased to report that good progress has been made and that the focus has moved from a need to get everyone up to a certain level of knowledge whilst maintaining operational standards, to a more forward-looking stance.

With summer disappearing in the rear-view mirror we are fast approaching the end of the year. Before long the Christmas festivities will dazzle in the headlights and, as usual, the Club will provide a string of appropriate events and activities for everyone. I hope you can afford some time out of the fast lane to enjoy a break with family and friends over Christmas.

Our GM has settled in well and built very good relationships with staff, the committees and, I believe, members alike. In some of the modest changes in the Mountbatten and The Verandah, in the creation of The Hangout and in delivering our new Work Hub, Andrew has demonstrated to the Main Committee an ability to create positive impactful changes on a tight budget. Further, in his first ten months he has led his team to deliver good cost control initiatives without compromising staff or member satisfaction. I am particularly encouraged by the passion he has shown and, now one year in, his desire to set new goals for our club.

Over the past year, there have been changes in a variety of areas. Of significance has been the process of bedding in our new General Manager, a number of new senior staff and four new members of the Main Committee. All of these changes occurring in a short period inevitably leads to some uncertainty and instability and poses a different set of

Our Best of British celebrations have attracted members throughout the year. It all started with An Evening with the Last Captain of The Royal Yacht Britannia. Shortly thereafter, Faulty Towers and The Royal Wedding Street Party proved to be two of our most popular events this year, garnering massive turnouts and excellent feedback. In June, celebrity chef Lesley

Dear Members,

Waters brought us two mouth-watering dining events and these have been followed by the Prize Bingo Night, Superbrains and the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at The Singapore Turf Club. This month, we will wrap up the celebrations with The Great British Ball on Fri, 30 Nov. In partnership with The British Chamber of Commerce Singapore, the Club is aiming to bring you the very best of all things British and, being the last day in November and no doubt therefore continuing into the early morning of the first day in December, get the Christmas spirit rolling. Every member should be holding a copy of this year’s Festive Supplement. It contains key information on the various events and celebrations taking place at the Club. If you do not have one, don’t panic, you may visit www.britishclub.org.sg to view and book any of the festive promotions and events. Don’t take too long though as the events are always popular and the early bird offers are ending soon. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and the very best for 2019. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

NATALIE TAN & TAN KING MING

Top 5 Tax Advantaged Trusts By Huw Wedlock, The Fry Group

Top 5 Tax Advantaged Trusts Trusts have been a useful tax structure for sensible tax planning since the Crusades: Crusaders were exempt from paying tax, but placed their property under a trustee’s care in their absence and had the King’s protection in case the trustee didn’t want to return the property later. Today, whether you’re among the super wealthy who have employed Trusts for some time, or indeed a Crusader, trusts may be useful for you. Let’s look at the top five tax advantages trusts offer.

1. Discretionary trust

4. Excluded property trust

A settlor (you) gifts into trust assets for the benefit of named beneficiaries. If the gift is valued at less than £331,000 and you have not used the nil rate band and annual allowances, the gift will be inheritance tax (IHT) free at that stage. Beneficiaries can offset their annual personal allowance of £11,850 against income and receive a refund of tax paid by the trust. After seven years the settlor can initiate this process again.

If you and/or or your spouse are not UK-domiciled, you can establish this trust, usually with foreign property – but certain UK gilts, unit trusts, and foreign currency accounts will also be IHT free. This applies if the non-UK domiciled settlor goes on to live in the UK and becomes deemed domiciled there after 15 years.

2. Loan trust

Split trusts or retained benefit trusts are part gift for the beneficiary and part capital return for you, the settlor. They share many features with the loan and discounted gift trusts and are often made through an insurance company bond investment – again producing, a double tax advantage for you – The settlor of the trust.

An individual (you) loans assets to a bespoke trust with a beneficiary trust running alongside. You can call this loan at any time but will usually receive up to 5% a year income from the trust. The loan tapers down over 20 years but any investment appreciation accrues over the years in the trust, IHT free. After 20 years the settlor’s loan in the trust will have reduced to nil and, with good investment advice, the beneficiary trust will have increased IHT-free.

3. Discounted gift trust

5. Split trust

There are numerous tax advantaged trusts for particular situations: asset protection, personal injury payments, disabled persons, bereaved minors, persons aged 18-25, and second marriages. If you are looking for a bespoke trust, get in touch with your financial adviser. Unlike the Crusaders, you won’t have to go on a crusade to get the tax benefits.

This trust can only receive cash, or an assignment of an existing life policy (valued at point its assigned into the trust), but offers an immediate IHT advantage and drawdown of capital for the settlor (you). When you gift a lump sum to the trust, the insurance company calculates actuarially how long you might live and values that at £X. This is your discount which is IHT-free even if you die immediately after setting it up – providing the balance is less than your unutilised nil rate band (which is also exempt from IHT). Your beneficiary(s) receive IHT-free capital on your death, but until then you receive up to a 5% annual income from the trust.

THE BRITISH CLUB

• COMMITTEE IN THE SPOTLIGHT •

INTERVIEW with

n a i m a D lls i H

What is your role on the Main Committee, and how did it all start? It all started one Monday evening around ten years ago when I was asked if I would “look after” the finances of the tennis section. Within a year, having not realised the potential consequences, I was Tennis Convenor and a member of the Sports Committee. The then members of the Main Committee invited me to stand and, having been elected, over the last six years I have been Treasurer, Vice President and now President of the Club.

How long have you been a Member at The British Club? Rhiannon and I joined the Club in 2007 having just moved to Singapore from Hong Kong where we were members of The Football Club and The Yacht Club. I still use The Football Club when I am in Hong Kong and it brings back great memories.

Tell us more about the past three years, as President of the Club. Where do I start?

Describe the Club in one word. Engaging

Which is your favourite dish at the Club? It’s impossible to answer that without offending someone! The front of house team in each of our outlets know, without prompting, what Rhiannon and I like to drink and eat and that is so important in differentiating a club from a hotel or restaurant.

What do you do when you are not at the Club? Assuming that the family are all happy, I work, do more work and occasionally play golf, tennis and practice pilates. We like to travel as a family and seek to mix cultural destinations and experiences with an annual ski trip.

Where do you dine outside of the Club? We rarely dine outside of the Club, although I have a weakness for good Italian food.

The last three years have seen major changes in the management team, in the make-up of the Main Committee and in the physical facilities operated by the Club.

What is your favourite movie of all time?

We have made significant investments in the Gym and the Windsor Arms (and its associated kitchen). There has been a full replacement of all of the enterprise systems and software (being fully implemented now) and modest investment in The Mountbatten, The Verandah, The Hangout and the Work Hub.

Tell us your favourite band or singer.

Over the last nine months the Main Committee and management team have spent time developing a mid-term strategy for club that encompasses a variety of areas including membership and member engagement, communications and social media, sports, sponsorship and governance. Attracting new members is particularly important at a time when club membership is less prevalent and there is an outflow of long term overseas residents based in Singapore. All of these developments have been addressed whilst maintaining operational stability and with an eye on driving continual improvement in the finances of the Club.

Probably Pulp Fiction.

Another difficult one as I have always been interested in music and my tastes change but I would say Bowie and Prince would be favourite solo performers and Japan and Roxy Music would be my favourite bands.

What is your favourite sport? Tennis and golf to play and football to watch.

What inspires you? Seeing people achieve something no matter how great or small.

Tell us something about yourself that nobody knows. At one time I was a military pilot.

There is always much to do but it is an exciting path to follow.

If you are interested to know more or to join the subcommittee, please email enquiries@britishclub.org.sg SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT |

• MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT •

Share with us more about yourself and your line of work. Cello has been part of my life since the age of seven. I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to pursue a professional music education in Japan, Singapore, Denmark and UK. After my graduation, I performed actively in Europe and Asia. Some of the events in which I took part were the 2005 Royal Variety Performance in UK and the 2009 National Day Parade in Singapore. Offstage, I teach young cellists from the School of Young Talents at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Besides preparing them for examinations, I try to impart an understanding of nuance in tone and technique and seek out opportunities for students to perform in concerts and competitions.

For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature

u i L a h s a t Na

Natasha joined the Club in May this year. She is a professional cellist, music educator and a Director of Singapore Raffles International Music Festival. Read on as we will find out more about Natasha and her profession. As a relatively new Member, tell us why you decided to join the Club, and your experience so far. The British Club’s seclusion with its lush greenery and resort style surroundings attracted me instantly on my first visit; other clubs just do not have the same ambience. I love coming here for lunches after my golfing sessions or to catch up with friends. Windsor Arms’ wide selection of greens at the salad bar and the Indian cuisine at the Verandah are definitely my favourites. The warmth of the staff makes me feel at home, and my guests feel likewise too. It is truly a relaxing place for me to recharge.

Together with a group of other passionate music educators, I have contributed in setting up a platform under the ‘Singapore Raffles Music Festival’ banner to nurture young musicians. It is an international stage for young, talented musicians to showcase their abilities and foster friendships. Thousands of participants have been involved in the Festival’s competitions, concerts and masterclasses in Singapore and Vienna since its inception five years ago. Besides music, I have come to enjoy golf, both the game and the being ensconced in nature. Photography is important to me as a means of capturing moments, emotions, places and creating indelible memories. I am quite intrepid when it comes to food - exploring a great variety of cuisines and trying to recreate my favourites in my own kitchen.

What values do you derive from being a music educator and what motivates you? It has always been my aspiration to pass on my love for music to the young. Getting them to enjoy the journey of appreciating fine music and embarking them on a borderless music education is my biggest motivation. I believe that once the seed for the love of music is planted, it cannot but grow. Playing a small part in someone achieving or even surpassing their dreams is my ultimate satisfaction.

What advice do you have for the younger generation who are interested in music? Music is a universal language. With music you can communicate across cultural and linguistic boundaries. I’ve made new friends all over the world through music. Be your own artist, and always be confident in what you’re doing. The true beauty of music is that it connects people. It carries a message and the musicians are the messengers.

May’s journey started out one fine day on 1 October 1986, the same year when the Club held its soft opening. Having seen a job posting in the papers, May and her cousin decided to make their way to the Club to apply for jobs. Being unfamiliar with the roads, they ended up by the main road, stranded and asking for directions. Fortunately, they met a friendly man, who was driving and knew the way, and even offered them a ride up. May went through 2 weeks of probation, after which was then confirmed as a permanent staff. By then, she was part of the team required to keep the Club clean and pristine. Some might think that their job ends there, but boy, there’s indeed much more to do. From carpets and windows, to linen and décor, the team did it all themselves in-house. Along the way, May emphasised that the Club gave her a lot of freedom, thus allowing her to innovate and suggest new equipment worth purchasing. These were all needed to improve the Club, and to uphold its pristine condition. Throughout the years, May ended up being promoted to being a leader, and then supervisor, and now a Housekeeping Executive. Fast forward 32 years, May is now our longest serving employee at the Club. She has received the Club’s employee of the month three times, and was the employee of the year in 2011! As quoted by May – “I’ve seen the Club grown so much, and so many improvements have been made over the years”. The housekeeping team is a big part of the Club, and is vital as they are like groomers for the Club. May has been there, and done that. Let’s find out more about May, and her amazing journey thus far.

THE BRITISH CLUB

• STAFF IN THE SPOTLIGHT •

1)

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

7) I love rock climbing, and anything to do with climbing!

2)

How much have you seen the Club change over the years?

Honestly, I don’t know where to start. The Club has seen so much positive changes in terms of infrastructure, logistics and operations. I’m positive this will carry on for a long time.

3)

Tell us a food item that you’ll never get close to.

I do not eat beef because of my religion, and lamb as well but that is just because I do not like the taste.

4)

What is your favourite local dish?

Pork Rib Rice!

5)

What movies do you like?

Mostly martial arts movies, and it’s a bonus if Jackie Chan is acting in it.

6) What is your greatest strength or weakness? My job requires me to be meticulous as I deal with a lot of linen. As such, having an eye for detail is essential.

Nicest thing a Member has said or done for you?

Generally, Members have been very nice to me. Time to time, small gestures and feedback from Members show that they see and appreciate my hard work, and that is enough for me.

8)

What do you do in your free time?

I love to quilt in my free time. Does singing count too?

9)

How did you get to know the Club?

I saw the job posting in a Newspaper article, and the rest is history.

10) Describe your journey at the Club.

A mixture of everything, as the Chinese saying goes 酸甜苦辣. As with any job, there will be hardship and negatives, but also, praise and recognition.

11) What is the secret to looking young? Happiness.

12) What inspires you to be better?

The trust the Club has given me allowed me to improve over the years. I believe that one should always strive to improve and be better, and to never be stagnant in life.

...feedback from Members show that they see and appreciate my hard work, and that is enough for me.

An afternoon with

Marco Pierre White,

the Godfather of Modern Cooking. How did you get from being a chef to a restaurateur to an hotelier? Going into the hospitality industry is a natural progression from a restauranteur; and I have a passion for real estate. Singapore is an extraordinary site; I spend 3 months a year in Singapore. Why did you choose Singapore for The English House? I like the people; people make the place special. A place becomes a favourite because of the people. Singapore is one of the gastronomic capitals of the world. I like the fact that it’s green, I like the fact that it’s clean. I like the fact that I can head to Purvis Street and have my chicken rice with broth and barley water. I like the fact that I can head to Asia Grand and have my braised tendons (he’s obsessed with tendons, by the way). I dine mostly in local restaurants not western ones while I’m in Singapore.

My family and I have lived in Chelsea for 35 years. Two of my kids support Chelsea and the other two support Arsenal. And because the white rose is the symbol of Yorkshire, I told my daughters that they can only ever accept white roses from a man. You have got to be loyal to the house. You say that food is an extension of yourself; which dish, would you say best represents you? Everything! It’s all about the eating. Cooking is all about one thing, the eating; not the ego. The presentation should be generous; food should be served hot, not cold. I don’t need 16 courses, small portions can’t retain heat. Chefs have turned food into canapes. It’s not substantial, you cannot indulge. Eating is all about indulgence at every level. Tell us what a regular day for you looks like, in terms of food.

Where did you get all the furnishings in the restaurant?

No breakfast. I only have dinner. Or lunch and dinner. Men get larger I have taken a lot of the items from my hotel in Bath and brought them as they get older. The beauty of Singapore’s climate is that keeps everyone staying young; because of the humidity, it’s like moisturizer. here to The English House. The entire building was derelict for about The heat is enormous, forces you to burn calories to stay cool. That’s a decade before I took over and rebuilt it. I kept the original structure and conserved the heritage. Even the tiles were replicated to resemble why everyone is so slim, so young looking and so beautiful. It’s like the the original tiles. There is a lot more coming. I don’t believe less is more, best climate in the world! If you want to stay young and be thin, move to Singapore. I believe more is more. Tell us about the inspiration for the hotel.

I hear you love nature and being outdoors. Have you experienced any of Singapore’s great outdoors? Like Bukit Timah and the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

The hotel concept is an English Town house and there will be a beautiful garden at the back. It’s all about emotional impact. When No. I just come to work. My way of life, because of what I do, has you first arrive, you meet the brothers from Raffles. (The 2 doormen from Raffles Hotel now work at The English House.) I love the garden at become a job. Raffles. Sitting in the garden one day, suffering from jetlag is where I What are your thoughts on Michelin? got my inspiration. Michelin has changed. I understand your son is a chef here in The English House, how The fact is they have done more for the food industry than anyone else. many of your children have followed in your footsteps? They have done more for dining out and inspired the industry more than My son works in the kitchen and my eldest daughter arrived last week to work as the restaurant manager. By allowing my children to work for any individual or institution. They inspired the young to achieve. What me highlights how personal the English House is to me and how I have they were years ago and what they represent today is entirely different. You never knew who the inspectors were back then, they never told you to protect it. what they thought of the food. Today they want to befriend the chefs, they have award ceremonies. I heard from one of your interviews that you are an Arsenal supporter, is that right? Michelin sells tyres, not food. Michelin know more about tyres than I But being from Leeds; isn’t it natural to support the Leeds team? do; they make fantastic tyres. They make money by selling tyres, not I was a Leeds supporter till I was 10. On my tenth birthday, I received the Michelin Guides. The guide is purely to build a brand. I admire Michelin, they have done more for the world of gastronomy that any institution, game, Subbuteo. My brother chose Leeds, so I supported the next best team which was Arsenal at the time, as advised by my dad. But I do have globally. affection for Leeds. Personally, you have follow your home town. He teams up with some other familiar characters in the same predicament and together, they endeavour to bring a fabulous show to all. *Registration will open at 5pm with the show starting promptly at 5:30pm

• SPORTS & FITNESS • SQUASH:

MONDAY BLUES By The Boaster With the SSRA Veterans’ league out of the way, the BC squashers are now deep into the inter-club Cosmo league. This is a more social affair, with the après-squash often lasting longer than the on-court action, and handicapped games to stop too many mis-matches. That social side was never more important than during the first two fixtures when we were run over by The Tanglin Club, with Ben Kiggell scoring our only match win in a 1-4 loss, and then getting beaten by the Dutch Club, with James Pickles and Gary Seston picking up wins as we went down 2-3. Happily, week three saw us move from searching for silver linings into the gold medal spot with a 3-2 victory over Serangoon Gardens. New players, Omair Azam and Emma Pike were winners, along with co-captain Jamie Salamon, leading from the front with a tough 5-set triumph. The Cosmo season runs til late November so there is a long way to go and every chance the British Club can string some wins together and challenge for the title - it’s been 20 years since our last one so we are due! Cosmo matches are on Monday nights and so run in parallel with our social nights, and there’s a great buzz around the courts when we have a home match. Any club members who play squash but are not (yet) part of the squash section are invited to come along one evening and see for themselves.

We were delighted to welcome back former convener Jan du Preez as a guest at a couple of our September social nights. He is pictured here with his predecessor Steve and successor Craig

• SPORTS & FITNESS • TENNIS:

TENNIS SECTION REPORT by Matt Rawbone After all the excitement of the British Club open tournament followed by the equally competitive US Open in NY, the British Club Men’s teams are back in action with the STA Doubles Round Robin competition kicking off. The British Club has entered two teams and you may catch a glimpse of them on Saturday afternoons or Sunday mornings wearing their new British Club kit on courts one and two. For the results - The first team struggling with injuries have started with an impressive two wins and one loss record. Credit has to be given to two stalwarts, Peter Weidner and Charlie Thomas, who prove the fact that as you get older, you can still be ultra-competitive and injury free, by turning in strong results for all matches to date. The seconds, as we went to press, are leading 1-0 in their first match, thanks to the impressive Kuvesh Pather/Mario Tombazzi, not just beating their opponents but also the downpour that left PK Basu and Craig Walker locked in a battle at one set all before being washed off court. The Men’s Ladder is still going strongly and it would be great to see some new entrants climbing to the top. We are always on the recruitment drive looking for new players to join us, so if you are interested in turning out for any of the teams or entering the club ladder competition please email Matt at matthewrawbone@hotmail.com.
