PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, With the end of the year fast approaching, I do hope you have had a wonderful 2015 to date. On 30 September, we held an Appreciation Dinner for our sponsors as a “thank you” for their valued support of the Club and participation during the Best of British (BOB) 2015. Without them we would not have been able to organize events of such quality and variety. In addition to the activities and events arranged for the enjoyment of our members and their guests, the BOB provides a platform for valuable media exposure for the Club, an opportunity to raise additional money for charity and gives us the opportunity to work in partnership with well-known local and international companies - which in turn provides additional benefits for existing members and potential new membership opportunities. I look forward to BOB 2016 and if any member organisations are looking to be involved and collaborate next year, please contact the Marketing team at 6410 1111 or email marketing@britishclub.org.sg. This month’s magazine contains inserts for our Annual General Meeting to be held on Thursday, 26 November at the Club. All voting Members are encouraged to attend and be part of the decision making process as your feedback is vital to help move the Club forward. You will have the opportunity to elect the new Main Committee for 2015/2016 – please turn to page 5 for the Notice of Meeting of the 33rd AGM. Additionally, we have enclosed a copy of last year’s AGM meeting minutes for your reference. The Annual Report will be sent to Members electronically and uploaded on the website. An email notification will be sent out in due course. This month, we will be celebrating Mountbatten Room’s 10th anniversary with two Wine Dinners - Bodegas Altanza Estate Wine & Gourmet Dinner and The Big Five Italian Gala Dinner on the 6 and 27 November respectively. Diners will get to enjoy wines from Spain and Italy as our guest speakers share their wine knowledge. With Christmas just around the corner, you should have received your Festive Supplement by now. If you have not, please feel free to pick one up at the Reception or at any of our F&B outlets. This will help you and your family fill this festive season with scrumptious yuletide delicacies and exciting activities. Do take this chance to indulge and book now to enjoy the early bird promotions! Lastly (and it really is!), this is my final magazine message having come to the end of my third and final term as President of the Club. I would like to thank the Main Committee, the General Manager, and the team at the British Club for their tireless efforts and you, the Members, for your support. It really has been a fantastic three years as President of this wonderful Club. I have enjoyed every (well nearly every!) moment of it and I wish the next President the very best. Have a fantastic November and Happy Deepavali. STEVE SETTLE President

CLUB NEWS

Compliment Hello Sean, It was very nice to meet you last night at the Gourmet Dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and are very much looking forward to the next one. We are new to the Club and as we mentioned to you last night, the thing that has struck us most has been the attentiveness of your staff. The service is exceptional in both its friendliness and responsiveness across all of the restaurants and bars. The quality of food has been better than we expected, and the Indian food has been exceptional. Another area that we have noted, which is rarely mentioned but very important, is that your house keeping staff seem to maintain very high standards.

A Visit by HM King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece

We have one suggestion for the Gourmet Dinners which you may think appropriate. How about offering reservations for two people the opportunity to sit at a table with another couple or couples. You could potentially offer this to single reservations also. This could be entirely optional but would offer an opportunity to socialize. We have belonged to a dining club before where this worked very well, although I appreciate it is not everyone’s cup of tea. Wishing you a relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable holiday, Kind regards, Rhonda and David Prout

The British Club was honoured to have His Majesty, King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece at the Club on Thursday, 1 October for a wonderful evening at the Treetops Lounge.

Savers need to beware ‘liquidity trap’ in today’s volatile markets Warren Buffett famously said, “only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked.” That’s true in volatile markets like those experienced in the last three months which according to one report has seen $57 billion pulled out of emerging markets and the blue-chip Straits Times Index in Singapore down 16% in the last quarter. Warren Buffett’s adage is a reminder that timing is everything when it comes to investments. Unfortunately life doesn’t always co-operate with market cycles and that’s why liquidity is a much overlooked component of financial planning. In Singapore, there are many fixed term retirement products on the market, particularly for expats. They often include significant upfront fees, locked in monthly payments over long periods (25 or 30 years), high exit penalties and hidden fees. Too often we set and forget these things. But what about when the unexpected happens? One-size-fits-all products with low liquidity can leave you high and dry, just when you need your savings the most. That’s where liquidity planning becomes important as part of a holistic savings strategy. Unfortunately, liquidity comes at a cost. The most basic form is cash in the bank. It’s not going to yield much in return for your deposit; around 0.05% in an account at a Singapore bank on a deposit of less than $250,000. When accounting for inflation – that becomes a negative savings rate. You are paying for the privilege of depositing funds in the bank and accessing those funds at will.

DAVID PUGH

Or you can try trading your way through volatile markets. The difficulty here is in timing the markets. “Good luck with that,” as Terry Smith, the renowned fund manager at Fundsmith would say. Timing markets is something even the best investors consistently fail to achieve.

OF THE FRY GROUP SINGAPORE PROVIDES A ‘CUT OUT AND KEEP’ LIST FOR READERS

There are several ways that investors can avoid the ‘liquidity trap’.

David Pugh has been living and working in South East Asia for four years and is responsible for The Fry Group’s activities in the region. David specialises in inheritance tax strategy, pension planning and portfolio management. He is a regular contributor of financial scenario articles for the Financial Times, an Associate of the Institute of Financial Planning and a Board Member of the British Chamber of Commerce, Singapore.

1. Keep a portion of your funds in cash, or near cash. Emergencies happen when you least expect. Three to six months of your salary can help relieve your anxiety when they do. 2. Put most of your investments in liquid investments. That could be a portfolio of shares, bonds, mutual funds and/or alternative funds. It is important that they provide at least monthly liquidity (meaning you can take out funds at relatively short notice) and that enough volume is traded to allow you to liquidate your holdings. 3. Have enough liquid investments to cover the unexpected, then consider less liquid investments. Make sure you are well compensated in long-term investments, for locking up your capital. Recent years have shown us that lack of liquidity is a wealth destroyer. We all know the financial crisis was a major liquidity crisis. Recently in June we saw more than 1,300 Chinese listed entities suspend their shares from trading during that market’s extreme volatility – leaving investors unable to liquidate their holdings. So while investors should always have a view on the long-term, in today’s volatile markets they are well advised to factor liquidity into their retirement planning.

The Fry Group has provided British expatriates with tax-led financial advice since 1898.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Member in the Spotlight For this issue of Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to present Mr Sherif Rifaat. Mr Sherif Rifaat is the British Club’s first Egytian Member. He is also a Diplomat-Counsellor in the Embassy of Arab Republic of Egypt. In this issue, he will share with us a glimpse of his life. Describe your typical work day as a diplomat My typical day starts very early in the morning at around 6.30am. I wake up and drive my son to school before going back home to have breakfast, check the news and then head to work. Once I reach office, I check all the mail/faxes, the local news and all news relating to Egypt. I will check my schedule if I have any meetings at the Embassy or outside, then report to my Ambassador. I will frequently meet the public (foreign or Egyptians) if they have any problems or any consular questions. I finish about 5.30pm on normal days but sometimes stay late till 11.00pm if we have a busy week or important visits. What brings you to Singapore? I was assigned by my Government to the Egyptian Embassy in Singapore to work as a Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission. What do you like about Singapore? I like the coziness of Singapore, the greenery and most of all – its people. It is my first posting to Asia, I have been posted before to Serbia, Montenegro and the United Kingdom. I believe that Singapore is a unique experience for myself and my family. I also think that my country Egypt can learn a lot from Singapore’s incredible journey and transformation. What are some of the interesting things you have experienced in Singapore? Some interesting things that I have experienced here in Singapore is the rule banning Chewing Gum (this is on the funny side). But I think the most interesting thing that I have experience here is the Racial Harmony. There is no difference between Singaporeans in terms of race, religion or language. They are all equal under the law, and all have same rights, which I truly find really fascinating. Why did you joined the Club? I visited the Club two times with friends who are Members. My wife and I really liked it here. It reminded us of London and the four years we have lived there when I was posted to our Embassy in London. The club is a safe place for our son to play and enjoy the different activities provided by the Club and it is very close to his school (the German European School Singapore). Name your favourite activity or food at the Club? Favourite food at the Club is the Indian Food and our favourite activities are Swimming, Tennis and the Gym.

SPORTS & FITNESS SWIMMING:

Section Report By Helen Tynan

The 4th Merlion meet of the year for the Barracudas was on the 30 August at The Tanglin Club. Another successful event was had by all as the British Club Barracudas brought home 9 Gold, 14 Silver and 12 Bronze individual medals and 9 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze relay medals. Unfortunately due to the recent Haze conditions, the 5th Merlion event at the American Club had to be postponed until December. This year, the British Club Swimming Gala was held on the 6 September, a little earlier in the swim calendar than normal. With over 100 contestants competing in over 80 events, the Gala was a big success for the swimming section. It allows all three areas of the swimming section (Masters, Barracudas & Learn to Swim) to come together as one for an enjoyable morning of friendly competitive racing. Free T-shirts were given to all competitors and lots of medals were presented. The parent and child races at the end of the Gala allowed everyone to have some fun with their family members. In October, the Barracudas went to the FINA World Championship heats at the OCBC Aquatics Stadium as a team building event as well as a chance to see some top performing swimmers compete in this world series.

Dates and Events for the diary: 1 November - Neptune Leg 4, The Hollandaise club 22 November – Neptune Leg 5, The Swiss Club 6 December – Merlion Leg 5, The American Club 9 December – Barracudas End of Year Party Any questions or feedback please get in touch at swimming@britishclub.org.sg. SQuash:

INTER-CLUB, INTER-NATIONAL, INTER-STELLAR By The Boaster

The Boaster can hardly remember a time when he has had so much happy news to write about. The BC Squashers recently hosted a touring team from Japan and had a great evening of good squash, cold beers and deep bows. A few days after that we had our annual fixture against SCC – “The Ashes”. While I won’t divulge the winner for those who recorded it to watch later (clue: it’s an anagram of CCS), match highlights included our President Steve Settle racing like Lewis Hamilton from the British Club and round the Pandang . . . only to find that the match was at the British Club. By the time he got back to his home courts, he was sufficiently dazed and confused to have no chance of winning. Andrew Vine played someone who could have passed for a founder member to the Cricket Club but despite his vintage was a very good player and won that match. With two former convenors down, up stepped Craig who took on Tim, SCC’s Canuck heavyweight. Despite concerns that our court was not built to support 300kg of grain-fed Canadian beef on the hoof, it was a great match and Craig pulled one back for the British Club. As for the inter-stellar, it’s COSMO time again. OK, OK – it’s really the Cosmopolitan league but our performance so far this year has been out of this world and into the Cosmos. After five rounds of this inter-club tournament, the British Club has 3 big wins and 2 tight losses and sit TOP of the league. Under the inspirational captaincy of Jamie Salamon, this looks like our best chance to win the league for the first time since the very first time it was played twenty years ago. Go team!

SPORTS & FITNESS Golf:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Club News September began with the Ryder Cup at Raffles Country Club. The match play format proved popular with our players. With some astute captaincy, we secured 2 halves and 1 win to the 1 loss, halving the match to retain the trophy. Say a prayer for British Club Member, Daniel Germain, who missed a short putt on the 18th for the Americans, thus handing the trophy to the British Club. Nothing like divided loyalties to mess with your head whilst putting for the match!

Next was the 3rd and final leg of the 2015 Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament at NSRCC Kranji. With a group out in each of the three divisions, we had our successes. James Morris picked up a nearest the pin prize, a weekend in Ria Bintan, whilst Nina Um won the trophy for Best Gross with a round of 91, putting BC ladies golf on the map. We swept the floor with the ice-breakers too, with James and Angus Maxwell rising to the challenge. Singapore Recreation Club were declared overall champions with Serangoon Garden Country Club taking 2nd place, the Eurasian Society 3rd.

ISCGT Novelty game participants, James & Angus

Thank you all for supporting inter-club matches in 2015 which has been a great year. Look out for the matches in 2016 particularly as we host the Colonial Cup, Ryder Cup and the 1st Leg of the ISCGT in March.

Cup Presentation from Daniel Germain (AC) to non-playing captain, Nic Merrow-Smith

The final activity of September was the Medal at Seletar Country Club. Charles Pierron played steady to secure his first win of the season, followed by Andrew Stearns and Nic Merrow-Smith in the joint runner-up spot. Steve Settle won the longest drive and nearest the pin awards eluded us with only Colin Allcard finding the green on either of the two par 3’s. He was pipped to the prize by guest, Bani Quim.

Golf Tour to Phuket

Year End Golf: Ria Bintan

Avoid the haze and follow us to Phuket for our autumn tour to Thailand. Nothing more to say having just spent the weekend in a sunny Khao Lak as Singapore haze levels reach nearly 300PSI.

Everyone loves Ria Bintan, the location of our final outing of the year. After the game, we will be returning to the British Club for food, drinks and prize giving. We welcome other Sports Sections to support the event and make a day of it. Look out for the finalized date in your mailbox.

Vets League Update By Paul McNee Club News

Todd Buck

The team carried the good form into the next game against Cuscaden Miguels and were looking good at the tea break having cleaned them up for 196 (off 30). Again, Twine 2/34 and Hosking 2/32 were amongst the wickets. However, an unfortunate drop caught the bowling off McNee, had proved costly as the next 4 balls went for 4,6,4,4. The BC were confident of running down the runs with ease, despite having to play a player short due to a late non-arrival. Being over-confident, some poor shots against the Cruscaden’s spin attack and some poor luck saw BC fall short in the run chase. Mr Cricket Hosking 33 (off 39) and the ever reliable Mark Stafford 21 (off 18) got the BC off to a flying start. Unfortunately, the middle order let the team down despite a late innings fight back from Simon Bignell 20 (off 31) and “Captain Reliable” Todd Buck 26 (off 24) resulting in the BC falling short.

Despite the recent hazy conditions being experienced in The next game was against the powerful ANZA team. The task Singapore, the British Club (BC) cricket vets had been actively was not made any easier with BC losing the toss and having participating in the over 40’s Singapore Vets league. to start with 8 players. Things were looking better when McNee caught ANZA’s ever reliable Captain Clive Tilbrook plumbed in The series got off to a promising start against Spirits CC with BC front LBW in the 1st over with a lovely off cutter. Captain Buck lead by David “Mr Cricket” Hosking’s 3/16 off 4 overs and Paul swung the bowling changes with his usual astute precision Twine’s 3/18 off 5 keeping Spirits to 8/171 off their 30 overs. BC and brought on Rob “Mrs Cricket” Lerpiniere. Pins managed then chased down the runs with ease with the top 4 batsmen to clean bowl an unfortunate ANZA player in his first over all retiring. Mr Cricket Hosking contributed 36 (off 21). Ross and would have been on a hatrick if the team’s best fielder “blocker” Marsh 33 (off 37) almost managing to score at a run. Stafford had taken a sharp catch at square leg next ball! This A ball and the two Marks, Stafford 33 (off 23) and Prendiville 32 proved to be the highlight as BC’s bowlers were subsequently (off 15) including 3 sixes brought the BC home. plastered all over the ground as ANZA took the score to 9/319! Captain Buck (17*off 25) managed to restore some pride as we limped to 190 all out. Clearly, there is a bit of work to do in the next few weeks. The team is looking forward to an improved performance in the coming games against SC and Misfits Athletic.

Paul Twine

McNee 2/42, Lerpiniere 2/45 and Prendiville 3/51 got amongst the wickets. A lack of bowling depth had Skipper Buck even contemplating bowling himself at one stage! Luckily, he decided against it and our keeper Ross Marsh 0/53 (off 3) had to bowl instead. Marshy wasn’t helped towards the end by some inept fielding including yours truly managing to let one ball through the legs for 4. BC then got down to the task of chasing down ANZA’s mammoth score. It was a solid start with Marsh (10 off 20), Hosking (53*), Stafford 27(off 38) and Prendiville 22 (off 14) taking the score to 1/79 before Prendiville was clean bowled trying to repeat the previous shot he had hit for a glorious six by ANZA’s Klaus Anton. Anton then completely bamboozled BC’s middle order with his clever mixture of long hops’, full tosses and slower slow balls taking 5 wickets in the space of 3 overs for the cost of 12 runs. The next 4 BC Batsmen Maughan, Carter, White and Lerpiniere all failed to trouble the scorers. The game was good as over. Simon Bignell 34(20) and

RECIPROCAL CLUB SPOTLIGHT

THE ROYAL BOMBAY YACHT CLUB

The Royal Bombay Yacht Club is situated in the city of Mumbai (originally Bombay). The Club was the oldest and most majestic Yacht Club in Asia. It was founded in 1846 as the Bombay Yacht Club when the British community took to sailing as a sport. Over the span of years, the Club witnessed the changing scenario - from the early Lateen sail to the more recent class of boats. They had assumed the title “Royal” and seen the historical change in the country from a British Dominion to an independent India today. The Club now stands in testimony of its grandeur past to its current status as the premier sailing club in the country. Besides extensive sailing facilities, the heritage residential rooms of the Chambers offers a magnificent view of the famous Gateway of India overlooking Bombay harbour and the numerous yachts anchored at the waterfront. There is a treasure trove of invaluable yachting memorabilia and a storied celebration under every awning of the Club’s premises. The Club has an elite membership registry with, inter alia, captains of industry, legal luminaries, medical specialists, professors of education, defence personnel and experts in the fields of accountancy, art, culture and heritage.
