ComplimentS 9 July 2015 Dear Steve, Sean and Chrisse, On behalf of the Bucks Rugby Club and everyone who attended last night, please accept our sincere thanks for a very well organized and managed event. All of the feedback we had throughout the night and this morning was extremely positive, which is fantastic given the magnitude of hangovers that are in play today. I really appreciated the support you have given our club and Neil and I am sure we will have more events of this nature with the Rugby World Cup coming and the IRB Sevens next year. Chrisse, thanks for your effort and please thank the broader team for us. Best Regards Claude Ringuet Head of Consulting Asia
15 July 2015 Dear Sean, It was very good to see you and Chrisse at the Singapore Ireland Fund event. SEVEN CRUCIAL QUESTIONS EXPATS MUST ASK IN ORDER TO LAND THE RIGHT FINANCIAL ADVISOR DAVID PUGH OF THE FRY GROUP SINGAPORE PROVIDES A ‘CUT OUT AND KEEP’ LIST FOR READERS David Pugh has been living and working in South East Asia for four years and is responsible for The Fry Group’s activities in the region. David specialises in inheritance tax strategy, pension planning and portfolio management. He is a regular contributor of financial scenario articles for the Financial Times, an Associate of the Institute of Financial Planning and a Board Member of the British Chamber of Commerce, Singapore.
The financial advice industry is going through a tough time and much of that is the industry’s own fault. Unscrupulous financial advisors and high cost, low transparency products have cost British expats fortunes, and damaged confidence. Here are the SEVEN KEY QUESTIONS which I recommend potential investors to ask prospective advisors before embarking on a journey which can involve some of the biggest financial decisions of their lives. 1. WHAT IS YOUR TRACK RECORD? Both the company and the individual should be regulated and licensed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). For the expat planning a return to Britain, seeking advice from a global company with a UK-regulated and authorised parent is also advisable. A strong track record is vital. The Fry Group has been providing financial advice for 110 years. 2. HOW QUALIFIED ARE YOU TO LOOK AFTER MY LIFE SAVINGS? A basic qualification is required for individual financial advisors in Singapore. Additional qualifications, over and above the minimum required, such as the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) clearly differentiate one advisor from the next. 3. DO YOU EMPLOY A STRATEGY OF COLD CALLING? Beware of cold callers. A reputable expat advisor will not cold call you at your home or office. 4. WHAT IS YOUR COMPANY’S POLICY REGARDING CLIENT FEES? Your advisor should be upfront about fees from the outset. Transparency of fees, commission and charges is crucial. The basis of your advisor’s remuneration for their services, be it commission, fees or a combination of both, should be clearly explained in writing. 5. ARE YOU SELLING PRODUCTS WHICH ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED IN THE UK? As regulation has tightened in the UK, products and practices now deemed unacceptable at home are being exported to expats overseas. Approach long-term savings and wrap products with expensive lock-ins with caution. Many of these are no longer sold in the UK. Beware of agreeing to any contract requiring fixed payment time periods as there will be cheaper and better alternatives available. 6. CAN YOU EXPLAIN IN DETAIL YOUR OVERALL STRATEGY FOR MY SAVINGS, BASED ON MY INVESTMENT OBJECTIVES? Your financial advisor should not be selling you a checklist of financial products. They should be selling you a holistic financial plan based on a comprehensive review of your requirements and savings objectives. That means helping you prepare for major life events and responsibilities - such as planning for school and university fees, returning to the UK, tax advice, will and estate planning. 7. HOW MUCH ON-GOING SUPPORT WILL YOU PROVIDE AFTER WE LAUNCH OUR INITIAL PLANS? Aftercare should be a key pillar of the overall package. Ongoing advice will be central to your relationship and, if absent, should sound alarm bells. Your advisor should proactively contact you at least every six months to review your portfolio and changing needs.
The Fry Group has provided British expatriates with tax-led financial advice since 1898. Tel: +65 6225 0825 www.thefrygroupsg.com The information in this article aims to provide information. However, this is not intended to form professional advice nor should it be relied upon as such and before taking any particular action, specific and personal advice should be obtained. MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Member in the Spotlight The SG50 Membership drive had proven to be a great success with over 100 new Members joining the Club over the past few months. One of the new Member who joined the Club was Mr Kevin Ong. Kevin is the founder of the cream puff chain, Chewy Junior. The puffs were an accidental creation by Kevin who had experimented with a blend of recipes from two countries. It then took him two years to adjust the processes, bringing the puffs to perfection – the crispy yet chewy cream puff. With a leap of faith, Kevin left his promising career and started his first Chewy Junior outlet at Tanjong Pagar in 2007. Since then, the Chewy Cream Puffs had managed to capture the tastebuds of many. Today, Chewy Junior has grown to an enterprise with outlets in 7 countries outside Singapore. In this issue of Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to present Mr Kevin Ong as he shares with us a glimpse of his life and success story.
What inspired you to start Chewy Junior? Passion to make it in life and to bring a better life for my family. With your busy schedule, how do you balance work and family? Discipline. You have to manage your time with priority and what is important. Keep things simple, clear and focus. Learn to say no. Any advice you would give to young aspiring entrepreneurs? Start small, stay profitable, and keep improving every day. Work hard and keep busy so that you have no time to worry. Take every rejection as you are closer to an acceptance soon. Avoid negative people from destroying your dream. What brought you and your family to The British Club? I love the ambience, restaurant and the friendly service staff. What aspects / activities of the club do you and your family enjoy the most? Dining and friendly people. Lush greenery, quiet and unique ambience that is away from the bustling city.

BRITISH CLUB CHOIR by Joanne Jeyes Continuing on from last month’s article about the British Club (BC) Choir we interviewed Dominic Monteiro. Some say Dom is the don of the BC Choir. Others say he’s just the only bloke that regularly comes. Either way, Dom has been a stalwart in the choir since it started and a great advocate. What’s your background with music Dom? “Not much singing! I lived in Shanghai previously where I took a few solo jazz performance classes - but nothing too full on. I played the piano as a youngster and play infrequently now (but never in public!)” What do you enjoy about the choir? “I love that it is very informal and open to a range of standards and experience. Playing a small part in creating a sound that, when arranged well and all comes together, is a pretty good feeling. That’s what makes singing in a choir so enjoyable.” What do you hope the choir will achieve next season? “I hope that we get some more members. We especially need some more male voices. Apart from that I look forward to working with Elaine again - she is big news in Singapore and we’re lucky to have her available. She does amazing stuff with the cross section of talent that we have.” What would you say to those thinking of joining? “Give it a go. It’s pretty laid back and we are a friendly bunch. We’re still finding our feet (or lungs?) and some new blood is just what we need to move forward.”
Elaine Wan Chan - BC Choir Director Elaine is an award winning music composer and director in Singapore. She started her first composition at the tender age of eight and wrote a full length musical score ten years later! Since then she has covered many areas including teaching music at Anglo-Chinese School and composing her very own musical! Elaine has written and directed music for the National Day Parade, written for productions such as Aladdin and Cinderella and is currently working on the ever popular Dim Sum Dollies.

PERSONAL TRAINING WITH AARON Members who frequent our Gym will be familiar with our resident trainer, Aaron Tay. In August, Aaron took part and won 3rd places in the Singapore Fitness Model Search 2015 and Asia Fitness Model Search 2015. The British Club would like to offer our heartiest congratulations to Aaron for his achievements. ‘Fighting fit, strength & toughness in mind and body’ is the core of Aaron’s training programs. Aaron treats each client differently, recognizing that what works for one person may not work for another. As a trainer/coach for more than 7 years, he believes in intense quality (rather than quantity) training programs that are rich in variety, challenging the muscles and cardiovascular system while focusing on the mind/body connection. Aaron’s specialities are Posture, Weight Management, Sport-Specific Training, Body Toning, Strength Training and Muay Thai KickBoxing
Drop Aaron a line at aarontay@britishclub.org.sg or call him at 64101151 for more information on personal training.

SPORTS & FITNESS Golf:
GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Club News Our golf section had a little break from the hot sweaty golf of Asia for July and August, returning in September to challenge for the Ryder Cup at Raffles Country Club; result to be posted next month. We are more than halfway through our Order of Merit as we move into the critical period of the year. So please sign up and get your games in. There is a grand prize to be won and it’s not over ’till it’s over! Five games throughout the year will place you in a position to challenge for honours.
Quiz Nights The section is sponsoring a Quiz Team at The Windsor Arms Quiz Nights. If you a section member and are free on a Wednesday evening, join our fledging team for a beer/wine and dinner; a nominal charge will be made to your account. In our first outing we did well enough to secure at least one bottle of wine so come along and hang loose. Look out for the dates in the emails & Club News and just roll up.
Golf Tour to Phuket 6 to 8 November
Our autumn tour to Thailand is in the advance state of planning with three great courses identified and a match arranged. We now need the commitment from our golfing brethren. The Tour kicks off at the recently remodelled Laguna Phuket Golf Club, (formerly the Bayan Tree Golf Club). Investments in new greens, remodelled fairways, additional hazards and mature trees have turned the course from a resort course to one of the premier courses in Thailand. Day 2 brings us to the majestic Blue Canyon Country Club where we will be tackling the Canyon Championship Course which has hosted the Johnny Walker Classic 3 times. Renowned for it’s fast and true greens, doglegs and challenging Par 3’s, Golf Digest ranks the course amongst Thailand’s top 10. We will finish our tour on the sea front with a relaxing game on the Jack Nicklaus designed course at Mission Hills Golf Resort and Spa. Famed for it’s breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea, this will be a very pleasant way to close out our golf trip and experience the wonders of Nicklaus’s risk-reward design strategy. Accommodation for Friday and Saturday night is at the Dusit Thani Laguna Hotel which provides plenty of options for the non-golfer to relax and enjoy the weekend. All are most welcome to join us. The cost per golfer (excluding airfare) is a reasonable $1095 per room on twin share basis, $1608 for a single room.
Day 1 – Laguna Phuket Golf Club
Day 2 - Blue Canyon Country Club

SPORTS & FITNESS Tennis:
A Whole Load of Balls
By Louise Wood
Well Kitted Out
BC Teams raring to go in their new tennis kit.
A new look for the ladies WITS teams and the STA teams this season who will all be sporting British Club team kits in club colours. Sponsored by Stamford American International School, the kits are the result of hard work by Ladies Convenor, Sally Morris and members of the Sports Committee.
Tip from the Pro Footwork can be complex but one simple idea is to understand when to play off the ‘front’ foot and when to play off the ‘back’ foot. As a right-handed player, when I get a shorter forehand ball with less momentum, I would step forward into the ball leading with my left foot, taking care not to step across my body so as to allow my right hip to follow through after contact. To return a wide or deep forehand, which has more momentum, I would shift my weight to my back foot, which as a right-hander is my right foot, giving myself a bit of extra time to adjust and find a good contact point. Have a practise next time you are on court and see if you can feel the difference. David Waggett, BC Coach

Court Make-Over
Players at the Welcome Back Tennis Social making good use of the newly resurfaced courts.
All four BC courts were successfully re-surfaced over the summer. They’d been feeling a bit blue – quite literally, you may have noticed the blue-colour run-off after heavy rain. All went according to schedule and most of the work was completed over the section’s quiet period in July. The new surfaces should be good for at least another 3 years.
