PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, I hope that by the time you read this The Windsor Arms will be open again following the rebuilding and re-equipping of the kitchen and the refurbishment of the front of house. I have observed the evolution of this project over a couple of years and I am excited about what I expect to be on offer but, at the time of writing, there remains plenty to complete. I hope it is not too soon to offer my thanks to the management team and the members of the Main Committee who have been directly involved over such a long period. It would be great to think that all members of the Club might take the opportunity to try the new venue, whether for a drink or a bite to eat. I am disappointed to report that, over the last three or four months, there have been a number of parking related incidents at the Club, where members have become frustrated with each other or where cars belonging to members have suffered minor accidental damage. Let’s try and be as courteous as we can and, where accidents happen, deal with them expeditiously and honestly. On a happier note, from the 7th to the 15th of October the Club will be offering, “A Taste of Singapore”. I am sure you will have seen details of all of the culinary and cultural events whether in this magazine, on the web or around the Club. If not, there is still time to take a look and make bookings but don’t take too long as I understand that tickets are going fast. We will be holding our 2016 Annual General Meeting on Thursday 17th November. We would like to invite all members with voting rights to attend and be part of the governance of the Club. Further, if you have served as a member of a sub-committee for at least one full year and you have the desire and capacity to stand for election to the Main Committee, please speak to your respective committee chairperson. In a similar vein, we are a members club and consistent quality input from our members is essential to ensuring the longevity of the organisation and a constant review and improvement of what is on offer. That is not to denigrate at all the excellent work of the Club’s General Manager and the management team who through their day to day endeavours ensure that we have a fantastic Club. We are very keen to see some new faces volunteering time and skills on the various committees and I would like to encourage anyone that has an interest to get in touch with any of the committee chairpersons, or with me, no matter how much they think they can help. Your Club needs you! I look forward to seeing you at the Club. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

CLUB NEWS
“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan
HALLOWEEN Celebrated on 31 October, this ancient Celtic festival originally commemorated two observances: solemn fire-rites for the deceased, and the annual harvest. Over time they merged, becoming Halloween (All Hallows Evening). Bonfires were lit in ancient Britain to deter evil spirits believed to be returning to earth that night. Nowadays, children dress as ghosts, witches, hobgoblins or other scary characters, to supposedly frighten any lurking evil spirits, while approaching adults with the familiar refrain, “Trick or treat?” ‘Trick’ refers to mischievous acts, blamed on evil spirits, while ‘treat’ indicates sweets willingly given costumed children this eerie night. Decorations are traditionally black and orange (black symbolises evil spirits, orange represents fire to scare the former away), including streamers, balloons, ghostly images and witch-like silhouettes. The most well-known Halloween items are undoubtedly pumpkin or turnip Jack-o’-lanterns with carved ghoulish faces, designed to drive away evil, named after night-watchmen who patrolled carrying lanterns (and Jack being a common English male name). With a lighted candle inside the hollowed-out vegetable, the effect is dramatic. Colourful harvest products appear as decorations or party food, like tomatoes, carrots, oranges, grapes and nuts. Other popular food for this spooky night might include blood-red tomato soup served from a hollowed pumpkin, squid-ink pasta, pizza appropriately dressed, mashed vegetables and different breads using grains, fruit and spices from the harvest, as well as roasted apples and cupcakes adorned with black icing, red glace-cherries and noodle strands, plus creative cocktails to keep adults happy. A SPECIAL TRAVEL FEATURE
Dear Members I am delighted in the October Edition of the Club magazine to feature a special travel showcase “Villa Cantik in the Jimbaran area in Bali”, Indonesia. I had the great privilege of staying at the Villa recently and I have to say the experience was truly amazing. It’s a beautiful property which is well maintained and comes complete with its full service staff. The Villa is owned by members, Terry and Janice O’Connor who have very kindly over the past 4 years donated the Villa as an auction prize for the Best of British and over the years, we have raised over $30,000 which has contributed to the overall much needed funds for our 2 charities, Riding for the Disabled Singapore and Gurkha Welfare Trust. Thank you Terry and Janice. Sean Boyle General Manager

Villa Cantik is a rustic, quiet getaway from the usual hectic pace of life in the city. Situated in a new gated clifftop complex named Gapura Vista in the greater Jimbaran Area, it is a quick half-hour drive from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. Nestled along pristine beaches, its neo-traditional Balinese décor coupled with first-rate facilities and wonderful staff make this one of the most desirable places to stay in all of Bali. For guests who wish to further explore the area around the island, the villa also enjoys close proximity with a vast selection of beautiful attractions and recreational activities. Bring your loved one down to Jimbaran beach and enthrall them with a candlelight dinner of sumptuous, freshly caught local seafood, or attend a traditional Balinese performance at Uluwatu Temple set against a stunning backdrop of the sunset. For the adventurous thrill-seeker, you may find paragliding to be more suited to your taste. Leap off a cliff right on your doorstep and appreciate Bali like you’ve never seen before. Whatever your inclination, our own driver and staff will be on hand to guide you and provide you with the best experience possible here at the Villa Cantik. THE BRITISH CLUB
SMART PLANNING FOR RETURNING TO THE UK By Martin Rimmer
It’s not unusual at this time of the year to be saying goodbye to people who are on the move out of Singapore and welcoming new arrivals. The number of expats returning home this year seems to be on the rise as companies in troubled sectors like Oil & Gas and Financial Services restructure teams and reduce or eliminate the substantial expatriate packages of the past. If you think you will probably move back to the UK at some point, it is worth getting a sense of the tax and financial issues involved. In the midst of packing, address changes, leaving parties and general arrangements, it is easy to overlook sensible financial planning and there is potentially a lot of tax to be saved. For example, you may be required to transition over a period of time into a new UK based role. If you are spending time in your UK office you may unknowingly qualify for UK residency before you actually move. In addition, moving partway through a tax year may impact tax payable on any investments you hold and plan to sell here. A good tax adviser will be invaluable to help you navigate some potentially tricky tax matters. However, here are some things you should know and consider before you seek advice and make choices. • • • • •
If possible, review your situation in the tax year prior to leaving and take some actions at that time. Make sure you are up to date with your filing obligations to HMRC. Review all your financial interests including property, accounts, life assurances, pensions and investments. Identify the tax characteristics of each asset with a view to determining which should be kept, and which should be sold for maximum tax efficiency. Recently the HMRC has become strict on its definition of what qualifies as resident and non-resident. The Statutory Residence Test lays out the qualifications. Be sure to check how that applies to you on the HMRC website and maintain a record of your “midnights” in the UK in the tax year prior and for ideally 5 years before that.
Getting the most favourable tax assessment on your total wealth may be a minefield. Sometimes the solutions are more complex but certainly worth a thought. • • •
Special care should be given to your property assets, as particular Capital Gains Tax complications can arise, for which specialist advice is usually needed. Particular tax efficiencies can arise through the choice of vehicle through which you invest. Offshore investment bonds, foreign pension trusts, certain UK vehicles and trusts can all play an important part in delivering a higher net return after tax. If your spouse is not British, there are particular tax planning considerations you can take into account through the use of offshore assets and holding structures.
Typically, a more diversified portfolio will give you greater tax breaks. ISAs, Income Tax allowances and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) allowances can all be used to minimise your annual tax bill. In the fast changing world today, you may be required to move swiftly. If you have planned well ahead of time or at a minimum in the tax year before your return, the tax implications of your move back can be managed and controlled.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
13
MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT This month’s Member in the Spotlight feature will take on a slightly different nature, as we feature a past President of The British Club, Mr Andrew Vine. Andrew Vine has been a member of the British Club since July 1993. He is married to Aneetha and have three children, Daniel, Adam and Natasha. He is also a long-standing Board Member of the British Chamber of Commerce.
When meeting someone new, the most common question seems to be “How long have you been in Singapore?” which LinkedIn helpfully reminds me is now 23 years! “So what’s your story?” I suppose the start of my Singapore story goes back to 1988: my boyhood dream of becoming an RAF pilot nosedived (quite literally!) mid-way through flying training. Armed with an economics degree, I reluctantly resigned Her Majesty’s commission and set off around the world -- bravely or foolishly -- with the utter conviction that it was the right thing to do. Technically, I’ve never returned from that adventure! After working in Australia to fuel my travel bug, I found myself working in Hong Kong. A serendipitous meeting in a tiny village near Guilin led to a new job at The Economist in Singapore. I arrived in Singapore full of energy and things quickly fell into place: I found love, we produced three babies (in three years!), and my job turned into a 13-year career. In 2006 I left to establish The Insight Bureau globally representing top level professional speakers, now celebrating its 10 year anniversary. I remember joining The British Club; I was 30 and single, and Club life exclusively revolved around squash. But things quickly changed, and my Club changed with me. For our young family, it became our second home; a safe, exciting adventure park for our kids. Progressively I got more involved in the Club: Squash Convenor, Main Committee, Membership Chairman & Honorary Secretary, and elected President in 2011. I discovered that my Club had changed again. After standing down from Club responsibilities, and as my children grew into young adults, the Club changed yet again, still very much a family venue, often for special occasions. At every turn, it has been an integral part of my life in Singapore. I joke it’s like I’ve had four memberships in this time! With huge appreciation, I can say that the Club has remained just as relevant and valuable along the way. And I am still playing squash!

Cheque Presentation to Nominated Charities
During the Best of British Celebrations held from 3 to 11 June this year, The British Club managed to raise $80,000 for its two nominated charities – Riding for the Disabled Singapore and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. The Riding for the Disabled Association of Singapore (RDA) provides free, therapeutic horseriding lessons to children and adults all over Singapore. These sessions can benefit virtually all disabilities in children and adults alike. The Gurkha Welfare Trust helps Gurkha ex-servicemen who served the British Crown, and their dependants, who are in poverty or distress. Today, some 7,475 veterans and widows rely on a welfare pension from the Trust of around £50 each month. Each nominated charity was presented with a cheque of $40,000 by The British Club’s Main Committee on Thursday, 1 September at the Club’s monthly Members Connect Night held at the Treetops Lounge. Without a doubt, this donation will surely aid the charities to continue with their good work.

Dry Aged Beef - Because Great Things Are Worth The Wait It is the process of allowing portions of fresh meat to rest under carefully controlled conditions for a period of time. (2 degrees Celsius throughout the aging process) Under these conditions, we allow the enzymes to do their work. They will begin to break down the proteins, fats and glycogen – a type of carbohydrate – inside the meat into amino acids, fatty acids and sugar. This produces the complex flavour of dry aged beef.
Taste Attributes of Dry Aged Beef Overall, the intense flavour of aged beef can be defined as savoury, sweet, tender and with some bitterness. There is no other cooking method that can replicate the depth in flavour of dry aged meat.
Cooking Method Our beef is cooked with the precision of sous vide, a modern cooking technique that enables the entire steak to reach the ideal temperature to achieve the perfect doneness one desires.

PENGWINE ESTATE WINE & GOURMET DINNER Friday, 21 October 2016
$98.00+ per Member • $108.00+ per Guest Chile enjoys a blessed climate that is perfect for grape growing and wine producing. Its long history in winemaking is dated to the 16th century. Chile has a near ideal terroir that’s envied by wine making countries all over the world. Expansive and varied Maipo Valley is nestled between the Andes and the Coastal Mountains, with Chile’s capital, Santiago sits in the middle. It is where the Chilean fine wine industry first began in earnest and has for a long time been the beating heart of Chilean wine. PengWine’s estate vineyard spreads across slightly sloping hills in the Maipo Vally, a region made famous by its Cabernet Sauvignon. Many of PengWine’s collection are based on this grape or its even nobler parent, Cabernet Franc, with each blend having its own distinctive character. Founded by two wine enthusiasts, Chris Milliken and Max Eyzaguirre, their wines deploy traditional sourcing, harvesting and manufacturing techniques, setting a unique and unrivalled benchmark within the industry. All their wines are handcrafted in small lots with limited production and pre-cellar for 2 to 5 years before releasing them to the public. We are happy to have Mr Chris Milliken, CEO and Founder of PengWine with us this October to share with us his wines. Apart from being an entrepreneur, Sommelier and author, Chris also has the invaluable advantage of being a renowned Chef. With decades of experience in the food and beverage industry, Chris is a master of wine pairing and is fully equipped with the ability to comprehend the subtle variances that factor into the partnering of blends with the correct food. Mountbatten Room’s 11th Anniversary
Domaines Barons de Rothschild WINE & GOURMET DINNER Friday, 4 November 2016
$98.00+ per Member • $108.00+ per Guest Experience a wine journey with Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) this November at the Mountbatten Room. Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) has made excellence in the vineyard and wine-making practices the basis of its growth. Château Lafite Rothschild was the start of the DBR (Lafite) Group. It was the first Château acquired by the Rothschild family in 1868 and inspires and guides the winegrowing practices at the various vineyards: the expertise and the tradition upheld for five generations by the Rothschild family are applied to all of the properties with the objective of producing high quality wines full of finesse and elegance in the “Lafite Spirit”. “The Lafite Spirit” is based on a rich past and a tradition rooted in the Bordeaux soil, on the handing down of knowledge from generation to generation and on the excellence and refinement of the wines that they help to produce. “The Lafite Spirit” is also the pioneering spirit which has led the Group to open up to the world, establishing vineyards in new regions and producing new, high quality wines. We are happy to have Mr Fabrice Papin this November to share with us his wines. Fabrice was born and raised in France in a family of winemakers, owners of vineyards in Bordeaux and Cognac. He is currently based in Hong Kong and acts as Asia Manager for Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). Studying at the wine school of Montagne SaintEmilions Fabrice, he also holds a Master Degree in International Business Wines & Spirits and has spent years over 10 years in the Middle East and Asia sharing his passion about wine. Named in honour of the late Lord Louis Mountbatten, November marks the Mountbatten Room’s 11th Anniversary since its redesign and relocation to the second floor of the Main Clubhouse. Taking pride of place in the restaurant today is a specially framed letter from the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the Honourable Patricia Mountbatten, Lord Mountbatten’s eldest daughter, expressing her delight and thanks to the Club for choosing to name the restaurant after her father. In celebration of its 11th year anniversary, the Mountbatten Room is pleased to bring two exceptional Wine Dinners this November.
The BIg Five Italian Gala Dinner
$138.00+ per Member $148.00+ per Guest
Friday, 18 November 2016 People have enjoyed drinking wine for thousands of years since its ancient origins in Mesopotamia, near presentday Iran. Italian and French wines are amongst the best and Italy is the largest producer of wine in the world. This makes sense because the Romans made the most contributions to the ancient art of viniculture. The Greeks, who settled in southern Italy and Sicily, exported the art of wine-growing to Italy. They were so impressed with the mild Italian climate, which was perfect for producing wines, that they called Italy. Oenotria, or the land of trained vines. The Etruscans, who settled in central Italy, also produced wines. The Romans improved the techniques that the Greeks and Etruscans used. Today, Italian wines are considered by critics to be amongst the best in the world. As there are twenty different regions to choose from, each with different varieties, it is never difficult to find a fine Italian wine! We have Mr Luca Maida with us this month to showcase his fine wines. Luca was born in Rome and graduated in Italy in Social Science. However, with a strong passion for wines, he decided to join the wine business. Before coming to Singapore, Luca has been in the food and beverage management for over 10 years in both Dubai and Hong Kong. Luca is also a certified Sommelier with a WSET Level 3.

A PI LOT ’S WATCH SH O U L D EN DU R E E VERY T H I N G T H E PI LOT DO E S . The Bremont MB range is built in collaboration with British firm Martin-Baker, the pioneers of the ejection seat. At their test centre, the watches are strapped to the wrist of a crash-test dummy and shot out of the cockpit. Enduring forces of between 12G and 30G in the process. But this doesn’t mean the MB is built for endurance at the expense of performance. It’s a beautifully-engineered mechanical chronometer certified 99.998% accurate by COSC.

SQUASH:
RISING SUN, SINKING BEERS By The Boaster In late August the Squash Section were happy to welcome to the Club a Japanese touring side who first visited last year and were back for more of the famous BC hospitality. This year’s touring squad numbered around twenty, which meant a LOT of squash for The British Club players there. The Japanese players ranged in age from 15 to 60 and in talent from top 15 nationally to those who might not have made the top 3 in their immediate family. Through straightforward wins and tough matches, though, the spirit and camaraderie were excellent, and that extended from the squash courts to Scores. A highlight was when the tourists forced their youngest members to give a speech in English and the lowlight was probably when The Boaster attempted to respond in Japanese. We look forward to another visit next year and perhaps, one day, a trip to Japan. Kampai. Next up for the Section is the annual Ashes fixture against the Singapore Cricket Club and the start of the inter-club COSMO competition that will run till November 2016.

SPORTS & FITNESS RUGBY:
RUGBY SECTION UPDATES By Duncan McGilligan
Every Saturday over the summer, between 8 and 28 players have regularly rocked up in rain, shine, haze or shoe-melting heat to learn some new ball handling skills and play variations of touch rugby that enhances support play and quick hands. Rugby Ambassador Neil Best has delighted the players by introducing skills variations and the “Fijian Touch” from his professional playing days which, coupled with progressive fitness training, has encouraged more families to come down to train and play. You really can’t beat jumping in the pool after a tough session while the bar staff prepare your cold drink. We have regular 7 to 13 year old boys AND girls learning and visibly growing in confidence as they play alongside their mums and dads and develop their skills. Sessions are also split with coaches for both the kids and the adults as we build towards full contact preparations for playing in the adult Singapore Muddy Penny Cup with the season running from October through to April. Building on this early momentum, the Rugby Section now has 2 exciting events to look forward to: 1. Clifford Chance Touch Tournament on Friday 23 September 2. Bali 10’s on 7 & 9 October. (Limited places are still available for both competitive and social matches, so please contact Lay Chi as soon as possible) You’ll soon see our new Rugby Kit being ‘modelled’ around the club thanks to some terrific sponsorship by The Fry Group - please feel free to approach any of our ‘models’ with any questions or if you’re interested in joining in (or even better, reply to Lay Chi who will be delighted to assist!) Rugby training runs every Saturday between 2.00pm and 4.00pm depending on the International Rugby match being televised in the afternoon/evening.

CRICKET:
CRICKET SECTION REPORT - 2016 By Gaurav Lakhanpal The second-half of The British Club cricket season is under way and we have a packed second half of the year ahead. We played a fun game with our Football Section Members and I must say it was a very competitive game where the Cricket Section batting first posted 238 for 7 in over 30 overs. Bill Morgan took the bowling honours for the Football Section, he bowled a very tight line and troubled the top order and returned with figures of 5 over 22 runs, while the Cricket Section batting honours went to Richard Wall, Simon Bignell, Chris Harris, Nick Powers and Rohan Pernaud all retiring scoring above 30. The Football Section didn’t have a good start to the batting as Paul Twine and Brett Davis bowled a tight line. Batting was a bit rusty as you can imagine and a late order charge by Bryan Weir and James Morris saw them scoring 136 in 27.1 overs. It was a fun yet competitive game played with a lot of camaraderie and banter which ended with a few beers.
Cricket vs Football
Next, The British Club played the Singapore Cricket Club which is always a tough game for us. SCC batted first and our bowlers bowled mean spells, especially David Bennett and Gary Smith, giving away just 23 in 11 over together and picked up 3 wickets between them. We restricted SCC down to 142 all out. We chased down the total in 28.5 overs with 5 wickets to spare with the help of Simon Bignell, Mark Allison and Rohan Pernaud. This was a good win for The British Club. We played the best of 3 games with Cargill for the D’Souza cup with a win each for both teams. This was the decider match. Cargill batted first and put up a challenging total of 211 in a crunch game with 4 of their players retiring - Ajay, Will, George and Kynan. For BC Paul and Benno bowled tight spells but that wasn’t enough to stop Cargill. Our innings started well with Richard Wall, Ross Marsh and Simon Bignell retiring but that was not enough to chase down the total and we ended up 30 short. We didn’t push hard in the middle overs and that cost us the game and ultimately the trophy. We have some tough games ahead of us, especially the Veterans’ League. Having not won any games in the inaugural season, The British Club is now competing in the games to the point where last year we took the batting honours with David Hosking. Please stay tuned for more to come. To sign up for the Cricket Section please reach out to Todd Buck at singaporebritishclubcricket@gmail.com

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith NEWS FROM THE GREENS Congratulations Chris Taylor, celebrating his first hole-in-one and our second in the club this year. What a moment. Unfortunately for Chris, he chose the wrong hole for his amazing feat, missing out on a new Mercedes. Nevertheless, the event organisers, Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) were able to conjure up a 5-night’s stay in Changi Village for him.
Chris ‘The Pro’ Taylor, makes a one in a million swing at the ball on Seletar’s short but tricky 13th Hole.
