• PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE •
Dear Members,
We are now in the final stretch of 2019 and I hope that it has been a good year for you thus far. We are always keen to hear feedback and new ideas from members on all aspects of the club’s operations. There are many channels for communication, whether directly to the team or via comment cards etc. Alternatively, if you would like to send me an email (president@britishclub.org.sg), please do. On a related matter, the club’s Annual General Meeting will be held in the Elizabeth Suite on Thursday, 28 November. We would like to invite all members with voting rights to come and be part of the governance of the club. In addition to attending the AGM, if any member has served on a sub-committee for at least one full year and has the inclination and passion to stand for election to the Main Committee we would be delighted to hear from you.
his expedition and book, “One Man’s Climb”, and the Club will run its Best of British quiz special, Superbrains. There is, as usual, a lot going on and I hope that everyone can find something in which to participate. Finally, I encourage you to share your enthusiasm for the club by encouraging others to join our community. Existing members are always the best ambassadors for the club and, given the transient nature of residency in Singapore, we are always keen to engage with prospective members. Our Member Get Member promotion is a small incentive or recognition for members who introduce others.

Dear Members, Our move to go paperless has been going well, with effect from September, most statements have gone out electronically. We now have a Member’s Portal on The Club’s website where members can view their statements, past and current; as well as book the sports facilities like the tennis and squash courts. Your support in our aim to go green has been important and is much appreciated. We hope to keep both our environment and our members healthy; a Sports desk will be stationed outside The Hangout on Saturdays from 11am to 1pm. Do drop by to find out how you can keep fit using our excellent amenities as we have a wide variety of engaging fitness programs. As usual, there are many events to look forward to this October. Come on down for some laughs with Steve Hughes on Comedy Night and join in our special spooky Halloween and Guy Fawkes activities on 2 November. Does investing with a moral purpose lead to reasonable investment returns?
INVESTING FOR THE FUTURE By Huw Wedlock, Director
ESG-driven investing is becoming more important to many investors, but what is it and will it affect investment performance? Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) refers to three central factors in measuring the sustainability and ethical impact of an investment in a company or business. It is a term that is interchangeable with Sustainable, or Socially Responsible Investing (SRI). It relates to identifying and engaging with companies that have the ability and willingness to improve ESG-related business practices when making investment decisions. ESG investing originated in the 1960s when investors began avoiding companies because of their links with tobacco production or the South African apartheid regime. Today, the practice is rapidly evolving and it is clear that many investors now have ESG concerns about investing. Growing global concerns about the state of the planet were seen at the climate rallies in London earlier this year. Today’s investors are asking more varied questions of
Historically, ethical investing often did not lead to returns which outperformed other, more traditional, investment methods. For example, in the equity space ESG, used to mean investing in only small and mid-cap companies because most large companies ‘did at least something bad’. Today companies are well advised to consider ESG concerns as part of their operations regardless of their size. Recent studies suggest that companies with robust ESG practices display a lower cost of capital, lower volatility, and fewer instances of bribery, corruption and fraud. A Barclays 2016 report “Sustainable investing and bond returns” found that “a positive ESG tilt resulted in a small but steady performance advantage”. The Wall Street Journal reported in its article of February 2016 “Does Socially responsible investing make financial sense?”, that “companies with high eco-efficiency - that generate the least waste relative to the value of their products and services - outperformed.” Food for thought Global challenges such as climate change, rising sea levels, privacy, data security and regulatory pressures are creating new investment risk factors. With companies needing to consider these impacts and their own corporate social responsibility, investors are beginning to re-evaluate how they make a decision on their investments. Ultimately, ESG investing can add a fresh value metric to your portfolio. It is important to remember that the value generated is not just about returns; the ‘reach’ goes much further. Today you can address ESG factors within your portfolio in a way that can potentially reduce risk while ensuring that your investments are used as a force for environmental and social good.
the investments that they make. At The Fry Group we have certainly seen an increase in clients questioning the sustainable and ethical credentials of their investments. • MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT •
For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature 2) Tell us more about yourself and your profession. From communications to headhunting? Why the switch?
Back in the early days of my career, I worked in content marketing, specifically digital. After seven years at the same company I decided to look for a new role and realized barely any recruiters understood what digital marketing was, so I put my entrepreneurial cap on and set up a firm that found those working in the digital and creative sectors, new jobs. I haven’t looked back and today we have seven offices across the globe. I moved to Singapore to oversee our Asia expansion where we have lots of exciting things planned.
My wife, Helen McGuire and I also co-founded a career platform called hopscotch.work. This is a rapidly growing global community of approx. 100,000 women looking for that perfect work/life balance. We champion, support and connect women who help businesses achieve greatness. We’re fundraising to grow the platform and Singapore is a great place to meet VC’s.
3) Do you have any advice for employers or employees who are looking for the best people for their teams?
Justin McGuire and family. Justin joined the Club in 2018 and is the CEO of the MCG& Group. Read on to find out more about Justin and his profession. 1) What made you join the Club and how is your experience so far?

We moved to Singapore just over a year ago having previously lived in Dubai and London. We moved to Bukit Timah and at the time of moving had two children, Clementine Violet (3) and Arlo Lucas (2). A year later, a new baby girl was added to the squad, Iris Aurelia was born in Singapore last January. We use the club daily, my wife Helen and I regularly keep fit and use the gym, our kids love the pool and attend swimming, football and ballet classes. We’ve met some lovely people and made good friends being members of the club.
THE BRITISH CLUB
Futureproof your career and always learn new skills. Singapore is at the forefront of innovation, and the digital and design sectors booming. We offer people many opportunities in this space, however an issue we find is that there are more jobs available than qualified talent on the ground, hence the fierce battle.
4) Which outlet do you enjoy dining at and what are your favourite dishes at The British Club?
Breakfast Omelettes at Scores after a workout and curry on the terrace at the Verandah Café. Our kids love the buffet, and this is a weekend routine!
5) How do you spend your free time and what interests do you have?
We love to keep fit and we take time to travel (outside of work). We’ve already started taking advantage of the amazing places easily accessible from Singapore. We love music and my wife, Helen is a fantastic DJ who for many years produced shows working at BBC Radio 1. We’re parents to three kids under 5, a massive English Bulldog called Percy, and we both run our own companies, so not much time to do anything else!

Eating disorders:
What is the difference between Orthorexia and Anorexia? Q. How common are eating disorders? In the UK, approximately 1.25 million people have an eating disorder, about 25% being male. Q. Is Orthorexia a new eating disorder? Orthorexia is a newly proposed eating disorder that involves obsession with a “clean” or “pure” diet. Currently, orthorexia is not listed as an official eating disorder, but many clinicians are seeing it in their offices.

ADVENTURES OF AN ACCIDENTAL AUCTIONEER In the last issue, I briefly mentioned the auction of the entire contents of a shophouse in Everton Road, including exquisite art and interior items. Well, we had the sale and it was incredible! But why should you consider selling your items through a home contents sale? Maybe you are moving (overseas or locally), or you need to organise an estate sale, or you want to sell an entire collection you no longer have space for. Talk to us and we can manage the process for you. Five reasons to consider a ‘Home Contents’ sale: 1. No need to photograph, write descriptions or research the price of your items – we do it all for you. 2. We’ll deal with any questions people have so you don’t need to. 3. In an auction, prices go up and not down like in a marketplace, if you are forced to negotiate. 4. You won’t have people turning up at your door at all hours to collect items or requests to meet at an MRT station to make exchanges. 5. We promote, host and manage the open home times. We have found you’ll get better sale results if buyers can see your items in situ in your home. Selling your unwanted items in a home contents sale doesn’t mean you have to sell EVERYTHING in the house. We can work with you to help curate the pieces for sale.
Highlights from the Everton Road Auction During this amazing home contents sale auction, we sold 85% of the catalogue with some great results for the sellers: A Mahjong Game, In A Red Lacquer Box Reserve $200 - Sold for $1,200 A Baluster Shaped Peranakan Porcelain Vase Reserve $100 - Sold for $1,300 I Praphan - Two Monks Taking Offerings Reserve $800 - Sold for $3,200 A Vintage Bakelite Telephone Reserve $120 - Sold for $260 A Peranakan Porcelain Kamcheng Reserve $100 - Sold for $1,600

• SPORTS & FITNESS • TENNIS:
GETTING STRONGER & FITTER FOR TENNIS By Sabriman Salbri & Liza Rowan
In the past - you had to play sports to be fit Now - you have to be fit to play sports. There are many activities we can incorporate while aiming to be fit, but what’s more important is the approach we take. Some people spend an equal amount of time (if not more) in the gym trying to be strong for their sport, than actually playing their sport. However, this approach will backfire sooner than later, as we are likely to wear down our body, which negatively impacts our game. We also risk getting injured by overtraining; which is counter-productive to what training is supposed to do – minimise injuries. Looking specifically at tennis, it's not so much an endurance sport like running nonstop for hours. So outside of playing tennis, clocking a lot of mileage with constant speed doesn't really help our game. What will help is interval training, for example using an x-trainer, bicycle or the traditional treadmill. However (this is the good news) limit your time – no need to spend any more than 30-40 minutes, and (maybe the not-so-good news) focus on the intensity. You might have heard of HIIT training (high intensity interval traning) – apply this to your cardio routine. This will ensure you don't over train or compromise recovery after playing tennis. In building strengh for your overall wellness and your sport, resistance training is recommended. This is where traditional exercises like bench press, squatting or pull-ups come in. These are the foundation for physical strength, which in turn support functional training. Functional training is sport specific, bringing the power you need to optimise your game. Here are the exercises that are most beneficial to tennis players*. 1)
Split Jump – in a split, low lunge position, explode, pushing up from your front leg as high as you can, to bring your back leg forward – repeat in a smooth flow by transfering your weight, without any sudden stops.
This exercise helps with sudden explosive movements as we run to our next shot.
2)
Wood Chop – using a cable machine (as pictured) or free weights (such as a medicine ball), in a small split stance, rotate and pull from low (waist level) to high (above your sholders) – moving your weight to your forward foot. When rotating left to right (like a back hand stroke for most of us) use your left hand to pull the weight, and vice versa for your right to left pull (like a forehand stroke).
This exercise teaches us to put our entire body into a shot, by rotating and bring the weight to the forward foot – and not to swing just with our arms & racket

• SPORTS & FITNESS • 3) High Pull - this is similar to an upright row exercise, but with added power training for your game. Holding a bar wider than shoulder width, lean forward so that bar is at knee level. From this position, use the legs to explode up on to your toes, while elbows come up and out as high as they can. Lower the weight in the reverse fashion.
This exercise helps with jumping up for those high smashes!
4) Lunge & Thrust – Starting in a standup position holding a dumbell weight (5-10kgs) in one hand, resting on your right shoulder. Lunge your right leg back as you thrust the weight up high – then come back to the starting position. After a set, repeat on the other side.
This exercise helps us lunge up into our serve with power, and also helps strenthen our arms and sholders.
* Your personal trainer will advise the number of reps, sets and weight that best suit you. As a general rule, start with lighter weight, doing 10-15 reps of each exercise, for up to 3 sets. How often should you train in the gym doing these exercises? Contrary to what you might think, if the frequency of matches played is high, then the strength training should be reduced, and vice verse. This is to ensure there is enough time for the body to recover & recuperate after matches. Off season, when you’re not on the court so much, you can do running and general strength training for fitness, with less focus on the specific functional exercises outlined here.
