National data indicates that as many one in five1 employees are likely to be experiencing a mental health condition, with the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s construction industry experiencing an increase in mental health claims over the past two years. Despite the construction industry experiencing the lowest number of mental health claims compared to other industry sectors. The industry has still experienced an 80 per cent increase in mental health claims over the past two years. In 2017, there were 133 mental health claims made by employees working in the construction industry in New South Wales, with the average claimant requiring 136 days off and costing approximately $67,000.

concrete columns, structural steel roof spanning 50m, crane beams and exterior canopies. They also undertook the civil design that included bulk earthworks, site grading, stormwater drainage and associated compensating basins, concrete hardstands, fire service including fire compartments and the sewer pump station. An impressive feature of this build is the large 8m tall precast concrete columns supporting the roof and forming two large 25 metre wide parallel runways which support two 25 tonne overhead cranes and two 10 tonne cranes at 8m above floor level. The cranes were designed to operate in tandem, adding significant loads to the structure. Enabling the structure to support concurrent loads from the four cranes without compromising the allowable deflection limits required the type of innovative thinking DWA pride themselves on. The superstructure was initially designed using steel, with the crane support columns specified as 310 Universal Columns (UCs). During construction it was found that there was a long manufacturing lead time for the specified structural steel support columns. Delays in the availability of materials which would usually result in construction delays were no problem for the engineering expertise of DWA. Their knowledgeable engineers quickly designed an alternative approach using 8m tall, 2.5m wide by 0.3m thick precast concrete panel columns with cast-in steel baseplates that fitted the existing holding down bolts that had been already cast in the foundations for the previously designed 310 UCs. This lateral thinking quickly resolved the problem in a timely and cost-effective manner. This innovative solution demonstrates that DWA are able to adapt during the project lifecycle, offering a wide array of services which is invaluable to so many clients in this current economic market. DWA are currently also working on other unique and innovative projects in the building industry. They are working with Fastbrick Robotics (FBR) to provide structural support for the design of cement block walls which are laid by a large truck mounted robot that uses adhesive to fix the blocks together. This partnership demonstrates that DWA are quick to embrace new technology and all the incredible benefits it has to offer. DWA have been operating in Western Australia for 20 years and are ingrained into the work fabric of Western Australia. It is such a dynamic industry with a variety of roles and projects that constantly challenge and motivate you to continue.” Having been with Contexx since their inaugural year, Adam has been working with Probuild since the two companies merged 12 years ago. He worked through the graduate program, initially as an undergraduate while at university, then moved into a coordination role. This enabled him to work on structure, services, shellworks, finishes and contract administration for a wide variety of projects during that time. He has been a project manager and, more recently, a construction manager on large-scale projects. Adam’s current role as Managing Director encompasses a wide variety of activities. While this still involves going out visiting project sites to engage with staff, his role now also includes engaging with clients and consultants on upcoming and new work, as well as liaising with the wider subcontract group. “I am focused on ensuring Probuild WA is a consistent business, which provides the same level of service to clients no matter what the project. Telethon usually runs around 26 hours non-stop, from 6.30pm on a Saturday night in October, broadcasting live across Western Australia on TVW7 throughout the metropolitan area of Perth and the Golden West Network (GWN7) across the rest of Western Australia. Since 2004 it has been held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Each year there are a number of worthy beneficiaries working on improving the lives of sick kids in WA. The design also needed to take advantage of the natural surroundings The Hales estate has to offer. The view of the treetops in the park opposite the home was a main focal point of the master suite design.

Design Manager Brad McDonald said the foothills location required a softening of some of the stronger geometric forms of the home, which allowed material selections with a high level of textural warmth. “We wanted to present a home that you otherwise couldn’t buy on the market. With the help of our suppliers and partners we were able to produce a unique home filled with new products to the market.”

Originally opened in early 1980, the Midland Gate Shopping Centre has undergone several major developments in its 40-year history, the first being in 1995 when the centre amalgamated with the adjacent Swan City Shopping Centre.

For example, trees removed were repurposed in furniture pods, while excavated clay was dried and recycled into bricks that were used during construction. Other unique aspects of the project were the blending of existing structure into new structure and ensuring that the envelope is weathertight post completion, and the fact that the centre continued to trade through construction. Hames Sharley considers this project to be very significant, as not only have they designed the new extension, they also designed the new foodcourt refurbishment. The opening was an important milestone in the life of Midland Gate with other potential future extensions still possible in the future. MOVING EXHIBITS A CHALLENGE The main challenges of the project came from the size and shape of the objects to be housed in the museum and their movement from their original locations to the construction site. With some items weighting as much as 20 tonnes, cranes were employed to put them on low loaders for transport to their new homes where they were again lifted by cranes and put into place before the main structure was assembled around them. The clay soils also presented some difficulties in that water came through the soil making compaction very difficult to achieve. This was overcome by dewatering and removing large amounts of soil, then replacing it with clean, compactable sand.

CREATIVE SOLUTION SOUGHT The pole home client was looking for a creative solution to build a unique home on their sloping block. Given the location and gradient of the block, a traditional retain-and-build method

The Champion Centre and Seville Grove Library are back in business following the successful completion of a major redevelopment. The renovation has created a vibrant cultural, social and multicultural hub within the City of Armadale, which is located 25 kilometres away from Perth. In 2017 the City of Armadale undertook a feasibility study to engage with the community to hear what they envisioned for a new centre. It was identified that the community wanted a new kitchen area to be the heart of the Champion Centre along with functional indoor and outdoor spaces. A range of hot desk areas, meeting places and outdoor spaces were designed to enhance these experiences, providing more open community access and encouraging greater collaborative use at the Champion Centre. The upgraded facility features the artwork â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Ocean Swellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; by local Aboriginal artist Rohin Kickett, as well as a large mural depicting local Aboriginal children and the Canning River by Australian renowned artist Matt Adnate and local Aboriginal artists Rohin Kickett and Bradley Kickett. The collaborative artwork combines contemporary and traditional together, bringing the centre to life. The Seville Grove Library also received a makeover and the modern facility boasts state-of- the-art-technology and offers a traditional library service. It also has updated meeting spaces and additional computer facilities. This will increase training opportunities, improving literacy and job readiness in the community. This is going to be an important space where people come together to share their love of books, socialise and network. The City of Armadale secured a $4 million Lotterywest grant which was fundamental in ensuring this project came to fruition and can now be utilised by the 91,700 residents living in the area. It took 18 months for the work to be completed and it was worth

APARTMENTS CAPTURE THE VIEWS All apartments were designed to have waterfront views, and all were designed with the living space to the south to best capture these views. The ground floor apartment takes up the width of the lot and opens out to a courtyard overlooking the expansive marina. The upper floor apartments equally divide the width of the first floor and have a bonus loft space that can be utilised as a guest room or study, with its own balcony that looks out to the ocean to the north of the site. While the living areas are to the south, the open loft has been designed to capture the winter sun with the roof raking to the north and allowing the light to filter down to the living area below. DESIGNED TO BE COOL With the shape of the roof and location of openings, the cool afternoon breeze is drawn into the apartments via the southern balcony, pushing up to the northern balcony and out the rear of the apartments, thereby flushing out heat build-up from the day in just minutes. Its design concept takes advantage of the fact that studios are considered a great alternative to regular hotel rooms. They feature a comfortable king bed and kitchenette; while the one and twobedroom apartments are equipped with a full kitchen and laundry facilities, providing a home-away-from-home experience that is ideal for families, professionals and larger groups. The development is accessed off the street-front into a large entry lobby, including a central lift accessing all six levels, with commercial tenancies on the ground level (and the opportunity for a café/restaurant). The ground floor also includes a conference room, guest laundry and gym, plus on-site parking. According to M/Construction Director Michael Read, the main challenges during construction included coping with busy traffic in Joondalup city’s main street. “This involved well-planned

The fire is believed to have been initially triggered by a lightning strike, and by the time it had been extinguished some 17 days later it had destroyed almost 70,000 hectares of some of Western Australia’s best agricultural land. As a result of a workshop held by the Shire of Harvey and the local community to discuss plans for the renewal of the town, it was decided that one of the priorities would be the restoration of the town hall, which was originally built in 1938, and the construction of a new community centre. In a recent build by Azure Luxury Homes in Buntine Road, Wembley Downs, the block had been subdivided which subsequently left an area of only 460m2, so the only way to take advantage of the view was to go up. The brief for the project was to utilise the natural sloping gradient of the corner block in order to maximise the view. The resulting design by NDP Design was a three-storey residence of 520m2. The lower floor of the house features a four-car undercroft with a small workshop. Moving up there is a theatre room, family living/ dining, laundry scullery and a fourth bedroom with semi-ensuite for guests. Upstairs again is a family retreat, study, ensuite bathroom and the master bedroom plus two other bedrooms.

Musicians are invariably passionate about their music and their instruments. The musical owners of a recently built residence in Dalkeith, however, have raised their enthusiasm to another level by installing a pool in the shape of a violin. And not just any violin, a Stradivarius no less. Inspired by a similar pool in New York - thought to be the only other violin shaped pool in the world – the local version is stunningly designed and executed and is a credit to the skills and dedication of the Western Australian companies involved in its construction. At the design stage of the three-storey residence, the client’s brief to the architect and builder, JAV Developments, was not to include a swimming pool as they preferred to have more rear garden space.

Fortunately at the time the dividing/retaining boundary wall between the two buildings hadn’t been built, thus allowing the use of machinery to dig the hole for the pool. With the steep gradient and a soft sandy surface, a Bobcat with positrack had to be used to cart the sand out of the hole and into a truck waiting on the main street. MATERIALS MANHANDLED TO SITE Once the pool shell had been constructed, the boundary walls, the concrete paving and the external steps had to be built. Consequently, the finishing materials for plastering, tiling of the pool and pool equipment had to be manhandled to the pool site. Because the pool had not been part of the initial design, most
