M
ay 2015 is history. We had a big month and finished it off with a Memorial Day picnic and then attended the 28th Annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony in Thomasville, NC. It claims it is the largest in the Southeastern US. Lt. Governor Dan Forest was in attendance and gave the Keynote Address at Cushwa Stadium after the parade. Now we are on to June, and family vacations. The motorcycle scene seems to take a back seat to the family stuff in June. However, there are still lots of events to check out in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar. Angier Bike Fest on June 6th is one of the events that has been around for a while. I have not been able to attend Angier Bike Fest, but I have had many first-hand reports about what a good event it is. Flag Day is June 14th. Although Flag Day is a nationwide observance, it is not a public holiday in many parts of the country. It marks the day in 1777 that the Continental Congress replaced the British symbols of the Grand Union flag with a new design featuring 13 white stars in a circle on a field of blue and 13 red and white stripes – one for each state. However, Flag Day did not become official until August 1949, when President Harry Truman signed the legislation and proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day. Fly “Old Glory” with honor. Smoke Out 16 will be held at Rockingham Dragway on the weekend of June 19-20. If you have never been to this one, it is time you went. It features Rebel Son on Friday night, old school grudge drag racing, mini bike races, and a top-notch bike show on Saturday. Camping is available and I suggest that you do to experience all that the Smoke Out has to offer. Don’t bring your children to this one! Father’s Day is June 21st this year. My father was in the Seabees during WW II. I think of him and can’t believe how young he was when I look at pictures he had from the Solomon Islands. I am sure that many of you share experiences like this with me and some of you are fortunate enough to still have your fathers with you. Remember and honor them, not only on Father’s Day, but every day. Someday they, too, will pass and with them the opportunity for you to enjoy their life experiences and company. I saw an ad for a Father – Son Motorcycle Safety Course. That might be a good way to bond with Dad. Life is short. Do it right.

Thunder In The Smokies Spring 2015 By: WildThing Looking for a real nice, casual, general audience motorcycle rally? Look no further than Thunder in the Smokies presented by Handlebar Corral in Maggie Valley, NC. We’ve been attending twice a year since Chris and Lori started way back in 2004. They have worked hard and built it up to be a really nice event in May and September. There is always a nice selection of vendors, leather, clothing, t-shirts, jewelry, motorcycle accessories, and food vendors. They are set up around the perimeter of the Festival Grounds, leaving plenty of room for motorcycles to park in the center or over near the stage. This spring, the music concerts were sponsored by Smoky Mountain Steel Horses and featured three bands on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 5:30 and playing till 11pm. Smoky Mountain Steel Horses is the Indian and Victory dealer in Waynesville, just a short ride from Maggie Valley. The beer concession is operated by the local Vietnam Veterans Association and is a good fundraiser for them as they assist veterans and needy children in the area. They also do a 50/50 and when they pulled the winning ticket on Saturday, the split was $323 won by Ronnie Tesh from Winston-Salem who graciously donated it back to the organization. On Saturday morning there is an opportunity for folks to join a tour ride to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which has some beautiful mountain scenery. We usually use that time to visit one of our favorite spots, the Wheels Through Time Museum. Every motorcycle enthusiast should take the time to visit; it’s a jewel. And go often, as it changes and they add to the collection all the time. By noon, we headed over to the rally for the Peoples Choice

Bike Show. This is a free show to enter and everyone who comes through the gates that morning gets a ticket to vote for their favorite. There were about 25 bikes entered and each set their helmet on the ground by the front wheel, for the voters to drop their ticket in. Close to 1pm, Chris had some of his lovely assistants count the tickets. Joey McGuire, from Candler NC, was the Peoples Choice this spring, with his all decked out 2006 Road King. McGrath Motorcycle Law Firm, ‘The Firm That Rides’, sponsored the bike show and Joey won the $500 cash prize. Then everybody meandered over to the open area for the bike games. Several folks from the local CMA are always on hand to assist Chris with setting up the props for the slow race, weenie bite, the plunger and toilet paper competition, digging in the haystack for the beer can, and a real laugher: bouncing a huge purple ball down the course to tag your partner who has to bounce back. You’ll just have to check out the pictures at www.FullThrottleMagazine.com to see what I mean! William and Michelle from Toccoa, GA scored the $500 for winning the most games, sponsored by Grow Dinner Aquaponics. If you want to know what Grow Dinner Aquaponics is, ask Chris Anthony or check out growdinner.com. A lot of folks take off after the bike games, go freshen up and get a bite to eat, then mosey back to the Festival Grounds to enjoy the band lineup for the evening. Then Sunday morning, the vendors are still on hand, there is a free pancake breakfast, and a 10am church service that rounds out the weekend. Another Thunder in the Smokies is in the books now, but mark your calendar for September 11-13 for the fall version! See you there.

2nd Annual Aidan’s Ride North Carolina
By: Kathy Johnson Aidan’s posse in North Carolina has grown substantially from last year’s 1st annual ride. Last year’s ride was the first for NC and a great group of thirty riders supported the event. Well, for the 2nd Annual Aidan’s Ride 120 bikes filled the parking lot of Rommel H-D in Durham, NC. I can only imagine next year the parking will definitely be over flowing onto Muldee Street! I want to quickly tell you why I stress it is the North Carolina Ride. There is also Aidan’s Ride NY that will be held May 31st and Aidan’s Ride Through The Country Side in West Virginia on October 24th 2015. Bottom line every state needs to have an Aidan’s Ride. WHY, you ask? Because every state needs to have new born screening for Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). This brain disorder destroys myelin, the protective sheath that surrounds the brain’s neurons — the nerve cells that allow us to think and to control our muscles. ALD is an X-linked genetic disease; it most severely affects boys and men. The most devastating form of ALD appears in childhood, generally between the ages of four and ten years old. Ready to be shocked? Only one state has newborn screening for ALD and it isn’t North Carolina. It is New York. So, if you wish there was something you could do about it, there is. Elisa Seeger can break it down for you and hopefully you will sense the urgency. Currently, New York is still the ONLY state testing for ALD. Connecticut, New Jersey and California have ALD laws that will require testing once ALD is added to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP). She said they hope the committee will approve ALD in August and added to the RUSP by early 2016. Again, the RUSP is recommended so it does not mandate the states, except for the states with legislation in place, to test. It breaks my heart knowing simply testing could have saved so many children’s lives. Jason Jones puts the NC ride together every year. This year the ride was dedicated to Jacob Cory, who lives in Asheville, NC. His mom found Aidan’s page last year when a friend recommended it. Jacob was 6 years old, and all of a sudden regressing. They couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him. Jacob had work done at Duke University and they determined that he was to late for a transplant. While this story is being written, Jacob is in hospice. He will never get to experience being a teenager, a grown up, a father, or your friend. Bobby and Elisa Seeger’s son, Aidan, would have been 11 years old this July 21st. April 29th of this year marked the third anniversary of his passing. Their son’s passing put them on this mission, hoping you won’t ever go through what they have. They want you to know that early diagnosis is the only way to save the lives of boy’s with ALD. They are very transparent. They hide nothing. Reading some of their posts, I find myself crying and wondering how they keep going. With newborn screening, we can stop ALD. Once a mother
knows she is a carrier she can have normal children through preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). Boys can be saved if ALD is detected early enough to be monitored and treat them before it is to late, as it was for Aidan, Jacob, and so many others. Bobby and Elisa Seeger will not stop until every state has ALD newborn screening. Jason Jones said he just wanted you to know that the ride is supporting a great cause and he wants it to continue to grow each year with everyone’s support. Well, I hope you become one of Aidan’s Posse on next year’s ride on May 7th. I, myself, will never miss it. We are even thinking about going on the Aidan’s Ride Through The Country Side in WV in October. But as for this year’s 2nd Annual Aidan’s Ride, it was incredibly well organized. I have never seen a ride put so much food out. They were grilling hot dogs in the parking lot at Rommel H-D when we pulled up. When we arrived at Crazy Shots in Hillsborough, it was BBQ and all the trimming’s to go with it. Not to mention some over the top prizes and raffles. The prizes and winners were Indian Larry Gift Card - Ricky Bongos, Indian Larry Signed Poster - Yours Truly, Genuine Motor Works Gift Card – Lauren, Women’s Leather Jacket - Bill Brendle. A “Special Thanks” goes out to Rommel H-D of Durham, Thread Slingers, Widow Maker CDR, McKinney Defense, 8 Ball Cycles, Rabbit’s Performance, Infinity Communication, Indian Larry Motorcycles, Genuine Motorworks, and Freedom Biker Church for taking care of the food! Mark your calendar for May 7, 2016 especially those of you from this area. People came in from GA-KY-WV-NY. If they can, what’s your excuse? If you did miss it and you want to donate you can at AidansRideNC@yahoo.com. Visit www. AidanHasAPosse.org for more information. They are already accepting sponsors for next year. So, on that note, I hope to see you all on the ride next year!

Forgotten Sons MC Poker Run To Benefit Purple Heart Homes By: Meredith W. The Forgotten Sons MC Poker Run To Benefit Purple Heart Homes began at Baggerz Saloon in Winston-Salem which is where the FSMC Clemmons, NC Chapter held their last event for veterans causes “Wreaths Across America.” The weather forecast was rainy, but it turned out to be 82º and sunny! This day was all about Purple Heart Homes, a nonprofit founded by veterans for veterans. Purple Heart Homes, together with the community, is committed to ensuring quality of life housing solutions for disabled American Veterans of all eras. We all registered for the poker run and picked out our first card hoping to get best hand and I started off pretty good with a jack of clubs. Before rolling out everyone gathered round for a prayer offered by the VP of the FSMC Clemmons Chapter and to listen to the safety brief. It was a nice long ride over to The Ole Watering Hole where we all drew our second card for the poker hand and conversed. I drew another jack and I was feeling pretty good about it! Then it was off to Double D’s Burnout Saloon, a good ways down the road, which added even more to the ride because we all had time to cruise and enjoy time riding between each stop. At Double D’s, I drew a 2 from the deck and overheard someone saying they had just drawn their third queen. I was out of luck with the cards but still having fun in the sun meeting new people, enjoying old friends, and taking pictures. We were there just the right amount of time and then were rolling back down the road to Willie’s Honky Tonk in Winston-Salem. After we wrapped up our Honky Tonk time we headed to the FSMC Clemmons Clubhouse for food and fun. The pack pulled up to the clubhouse around 5 o’clock and if you know me you know I was off the bike and straight in the line for food faster than you could put your kickstand down! As I reached the entry I purchased a few raffle prize tickets and a few 50/50 tickets and then couldn’t take it anymore and pushed passed everyone in line to the BBQ…(kidding). I waited my turn in line, mingled and checked out the badass décor at the FSMC clubhouse including a demilitarized AT-4 and a pretty sweet bar set up. Finally, I made myself a heaping pile of BBQ with coleslaw and went to town on it. After it seemed everyone had gotten their fill of food and had a drink in hand, a very comical member of the FSMC began calling out raffle ticket numbers and giving away prizes with tons of enthusiasm and witty jokes. Not only were the attendees winning free stuff, but they were cracking up in the process and it made for a great environment. Prizes given away included a $50 gift card to Kevin Powell Motorsports, $75 tattoo gift certificate to Timeless Ink, $100 gift certificate to Utopia Spa, and a table of everything from t shirts
and koozies to hats and license plates. I won nothing but I did walk out with one beautiful item from the silent auction. I had to have it, so after consulting my future husband we decided to write ourselves down. Well wouldn’t you know in the time it took me to get to the ATM and get back someone actually bid against me! The bidding war began and, as I said, I just HAD to have it. Must have been the woman in me! So, don’t you know we won it! The thing is Scott and I had agreed on a max amount of money and you ought to have seen his face when he saw the amount I wrote, but it was for Purple Heart Homes and that was well worth the cost to have a Stokes County tobacco stick American flag for our home! Plus I love to support local and this piece of artwork was made by local Shannon Dillon. The event pretty much wrapped up and friends of the FSMC, members and their families stayed to enjoy the clubhouse and all its beer. I mean glory. All in all it was an awesome poker run with plenty of distance between stops which to me is always more enjoyable and it turned out to be an awesome benefit with these guys raising over $2,225 for Purple Heart Homes on April 18th and another $2,500 in raffle sales on their own. Including donations from the FSMC Clemmons, NC members themselves the total raised is right at $5,000! They are veterans helping veterans and they always will be. As long as they can they will be putting on events like this one to raise awareness and help support veterans causes. Special thanks from the FSMC Clemmons, NC goes out to Dave & Missy Thompson, David and Karen Holland, Spencer and Jennifer Stanley, Greg Hardy, Harold Cheek, Brian Casey, and every single person who came out to support the cause. For information on upcoming events from the Forgotten Sons MC Clemmons, NC Chapter and to show support visit Facebook and search Support your local Forgotten Sons MC Clemmons NC. Members of the International Red Knights Motorcycle Club By: Fran Little The Town of Catawba’s 2nd Annual Veterans Garden of Honor Poker Run sponsored by the Red Knights Chapter 13 International Firefighters Motorcycle Club drew 70 riders. They came to support the Veterans Garden of Honor and enjoy a beautiful and safe ride throughout the Piedmont on May 9th. This year we rode for the 60 Catawba County Veterans who were KIA, MIA, or POWs. Their names were also listed on the back of the commemorative T-shirt. Registration was at Blue Ridge Harley – Davidson in Hickory and stops included Hickory Tavern, Zaxby’s Morganton, Iron Station Thunder – Lincolnton, and Catawba Volunteer Fire Department was the final stop and location of meal and announcement of winners. Together we raised $1,468 for the building fund for the Garden of Honor. This tribute is to be built in honor and remembrance of the sacrifices that our men and women of the military have, and continue to make for our freedoms. It will contain the names of more than 800 veterans dating back to the American Civil War. It will be dedicated on November 7, 2015. The winning hand, a 10 high straight, was held by Lakeisha Dawson netting her the $250 prize money. We thank our donors and supporters, including Cindy’s Starlite Cafe, Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet, Flowers Bakery, Blue Ridge Harley Davidson, Hickory Tavern, Zaxby’s Morganton, Iron Station Thunder of Lincolnton and the International Red Knights Motorcycle Club for sponsoring this year’s event.

Warlock’s April Bash
By: Shadow Ominous skies and random downpours didn’t dampen any ones’ spirits at the Warlock’s Annual April Bash held on Saturday, April 18th, at the Warlocks MC Columbia Crew’s social club in West Columbia, South Carolina. I spoke with Doc who is a member of the Warlocks. He said, “This event is open to all invited MCs in the area. It is a time for brotherhood and to officially open riding season. Any money donated during this event will be used towards maintenance and up keep of our building.” The Warlocks have been known to attend many events and benefit runs to help others, but this day was theirs. The Warlocks and their guests donated plenty of food. Everything from hot dogs and burgers to sides and deserts was provided, and of course the bar was available with whatever one chose to indulge in. I was fortunate to speak with many of the MCs that attended and all spoke of looking forward to this event. Some in attendance were, Wrecking Crew MC Midlands, Wrecking Crew MC Cherokee, Army Of The Lord, Warrior Brotherhood MC, Brothers Forever MC, Red Stone Ministry MM, and the Wind Sisters RC. Also in attendance were the good folks of

4th Annual Pop The Clutch Ride
HigH ground military surplus Hunting * camping prepers foods * mre’s We buy surplus!
By: Brandy S. Chapman On May 2, 2015, Bikers And Friends With Helping Hands held our 4th Annual Pop The Clutch Ride. This event was started four years ago in honor of one of our fallen brothers to help raise money for whatever his family may have needed it for whether it be funeral or just everyday living expenses. Since then we have selected anywhere from 2-3 families who have lost a loved one within the past year and continue to donate to the Cameron Boys Club in honor of our first recipient. We started this year’s event off with a Memorial Run, which was over 60 miles. This ride started at Dave’s Place in Aberdeen, NC and continued to the West End Memorial Cemetery to pay tribute to several of our fallen brothers who are laid to rest there. It was a beautiful sight to see over 80 motorcycles circling around the cemetery and watching as they came down the road till we all came to a stop. Once leaving the cemetery, we made a ride through some beautiful winding back country roads and made a pit stop at Sandhill HarleyDavidson, then
proceeded to the Bikers And Friends Clubhouse located at 1054 Quewhiffle Road in Aberdeen, NC where the biker’s arrival was anxiously awaited by many vendors, music, and some good ol’ BBQ. The vendors ranged anywhere from Low boil shrimp and Cajun corn to jewelry and clothing and even an oil changer. There were several bands that rocked the house, which included Tony Barnes, Dilemma, DL Token, J.B. Beverley and the Wayward Drifters, and Mama Molasses. There was a corn hole tournament that started around 6 that evening along with the burnout pit that got heated up and smoked the yard up for hours. We even had fun for the little and big at heart kids with a huge bouncy house and some face painting. We had around 200 people that came out to visit and support our cause that day. We hope that this event will continue to grow as the years go so by that we may be able help more people in the future.

Vintage Voyager
Mr. Bernie By: Carol Harrell Bernard Shankman, AKA Mr. Bernie, was born June 7, 1923 in Washington, DC. His family emigrated from Poland in the late 1800’s thru Ellis Island. Mr. Bernie was 16 when he got his first taste of riding a motorcycle. His cousin taught him how to ride on a 4 cylinder
Indian. He then went to work for a Ford dealership driving a Harley with a flatbed sidecar called a side hack. He would pickup and deliver cars for service. The first motorcycle he owned was a 1940 Indian Bonneville Scout racing machine, which he rode every weekend on a TT racing track. He raced in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Mr. Bernie graduated from high school in February 1943 and was drafted the same month into the US Army. During WW II, Mr. Bernie was stationed state side at Camp Hood, Texas. His job was being a motorcycle scout in the motor field artillery. He then was accepted into the air force and went to officer training school and became a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1946 he was released from active duty and went to into the reserves. Then in 1950, the US Army recalled him back to active duty. Mr. Bernie was sent to Korea. He was in K Company 3rd Battalion 7th Calvary under the leadership of General Custard. In 1951, he was wounded by motor shrapnel. When he returned to full duties he was assigned to be the liaison between 1st Calvary Division and the British Commonwealth Division in Japan. He was finally released from active duty in 1953 and came back state side. Mr. Bernie has received many awards including the Purple Heart and Korean Service Medal. His life
lesson that he takes from the military is to respect others and to always be positive. When he was asked the difference between his first bike and the bike he has today he said, “It has all changed going from kick start to electric start, 1 brake to 2, from a chain drive to a belt drive, from a 3 speed transmission to a 6 speed. Things have defiantly changed.” Mr. Bernie has been to over 14 state rallies. He has one favorite, the 1992 River Run in Lofton, Nevada. This one rally holds several components that made it very exciting and memorable for him. He quotes, “It had everything; scenery, rides, and even 1%ers causing trouble.” He snickers about the last one. Mr. Bernie is still very active and still involved with several groups. He is a life member of the American Motorcycle Association, and a member of a couple of HOG chapters, to name a few. His favorite rides are the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Tail Of The Dragon. When asked how it feels to be riding after 76 years he responded with the following, “It’s still a wonderful feeling. I still enjoy the freedom of riding. The next
best thing is flying!” Mr. Bernie has had several different bikes, ranging from an Indian to a BMW to a Norton. His favorite bike is, of course, a Harley-Davidson. Today he rides a 2015 Tri Glide Ultra with his lovely wife, Josie. She rides with him every time he goes out. Someone has to keep an eye on him! This amazing man and his lovely wife are the most beautiful couple you will ever meet having the best time riding after all the years. I wish everyone could live their life to the fullest the way they have. Ride on my dear friends. Ride on!

Wayne Wilkins Dice Run By: Mike Allen The Wayne Wilkins Dice Run Against Cancer on April 11th was the season’s first run for many of the 65 bikes that formed a slinky like double column through the sunny North Carolina countryside. Dice runs can have as few as two or as many as eight stops. At each stop, you roll five dice; add up the total score, and the person with the high score wins. On a dice run, you don’t have to have five stops like on a poker run. The organizers don’t have to carry cards to each stop and they don’t have to fill out forms at each stop as most poker runs do. The ride started and ended under the watchful eye of “Bruce” the shark that’s perched on top of Van’s Bar in Bahama, NC. You never know what the sights will be anytime you roll through Bahama. We left Van’s at 11:30AM and took the long way to Munchin’ Marvin’s in Oxford, NC for another roll of the dice. Some of the riders had ordered food ahead of time to enjoy on the nice side patio and the picnic tables out front. Moe’s Tavern in Rougemount was the next stop, where we were able to admire one of the new Indian Scouts in the parking lot and overheard a few riders making plans to attend Horse Backstreet Chopper’s Smokeout 16 in June. After a beer at Moe’s, we headed towards the Local Watering Hole in Durham. The Local Watering Hole has been up and running strong for a few years now, and has the best beer selection of any country bar I’ve ever stopped in. One more beer, another game of corn hole, and we headed back to Van’s to finish the day with some tasty burgers and all the fixin’s. Included in the day’s events was a bike show where plaques were awarded. First Place went to Steve Clayton, Maurice
Cash, earned 2nd Place, Mike Thompson took home 3rd Place, and a huge trophy for the best overall bike went to Wayne Rutledge. Chris Ellis won the dice roll. Brad Oakley won the 50/50 and showed some class by donating his winnings. “Selfie” from Iron Order won the auction for the neon beer sign. Van and Sandy always make everybody feel welcome at Van’s Bar, so nobody was in any hurry to leave. A good number of us stayed past sunset; playing the jukebox, planning more rides for the summer, and catching up with folks we haven’t seen for a while. If Mayberry had a bar, it would have surely felt like Van’s. A big thanks to all of Wayne’s friends and supporters, and a special thanks to Elaine Baldwin for her all her efforts to make the day a great success.

Uncle Bucks All American Pub & Grub Bike Night By: Grant All spring we have been dodging spring showers, but on May 5th we got in one of the biggest and best bike nights of the spring for Uncle Bucks All American Pub And Grub in Salisbury, NC. Located at 127 South Main Street, Uncle Bucks is a biker/live music play ground with cold suds and wonderful burgers and other kicking, or as they call it, “Bucking good food”. Every Tuesday through the summer UB’s holds bike night with Fast Freddie playing tunes on the sidewalk right out front. With plenty of parking right on Main in front of the spot there are always bikes and folks who don’t own bikes enjoying the food and a cold one. On May 5th, Dustin, from Tilley HD of Salisbury was on hand with the new Street 750 like the one used in the new Avengers movie and some great door prizes related to the movie to give away. It is a very cool bike, not only for beginner riders, but also for the rider that wants a sport bike feel while still owning a Harley-Davidson. The flat black paint really makes the bike look sporty, too.

Uncle Buck’s has a great menu to choose from salads to very thick burgers and wraps. If you don’t see it, ask. They can make anything you want. My favorite is the big burger on rye bread with the trimmings. And the beer specials always make me feel like I need a nap when I leave. UB’s is now trying the Sunday afternoon opening to see if riders will make them a Sunday afternoon after ride stop for a snack and cold one. Uncle Buck’s will open for lunch to early evening. Make plans to stop by Uncle Buck’s at 127 S Main Street in Salisbury, NC after your ride and catch the race on TV with a cold one and a good dog or burger. I can’t for get to tell you about the Bottle Caps. They are fried jalapeños that are kick ass good. Check out there live band schedule on their face book page and look for their ad in Carolinas Full Throttle Magazine. Make it a bike night tradition and enjoy the ride. Judy and Scott will keep an eye out for you. Ask Scott to explain.

Greensboro Harley-Davidson Ushers In Spring By: WildThing Spring Fling happened at Greensboro Harley-Davidson on April 18th. The day started out overcast and breezy as the vendors were setting up and Chunk’s Hawg Haven was stocking their coolers. The soundman was checking connections and the H.O.G. Chapter and Triad Bad Lasses were tantalizing everyone with the aroma of fresh BBQ. All was prepared for the first party of the 2015 season in the Motorcycle Park at Greensboro Harley-Davidson. The bikers began to roll in right about 11 as the David Reavis Band began pounding out some tunes. Sharee, marketing manager at GSO HD, was asked to engage a variety of bands for the day and she sure did! These guys were on the heavy metal side of the music spectrum and sure woke everyone up! The rest of the day proceeded with predictability. The bikers rolled in, parked, bellied up to the bar for a cold beverage, found some friends, and hung out. They visited the vendors and wished for more. The weather stayed breezy and nice, with clouds filtering the sun most of the day, but was not threatening any precipitation. People that wandered over to the dealership were greeted with friendly smiles of the staff that were on hand to meet every motorcycle need as well as to show off the 2015 models in stock! In the Motorcycle Park, the music went on. The Deluge was the second band on stage, then Where’s Eddie, and finally, Bad Habit. All the bands were quite entertaining with
their different styles of performance and all provided a nifty background for the spring gathering of riders to kick off the riding season. Food, fun, music, and brews – what more could you ask for? More is coming in the shape of the Summer Bash scheduled for July 18 in the Motorcycle Park. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is sponsoring a ride-in bike show with the Best of Show getting a photo spread in the magazine. Mark you calendars and plan to come out for a day of fun in the sun – and under the huge oaks trees!

5th Annual Kids Path Of Alamance-Caswell County Hospice Bike Show By: Scott Wicker On Saturday, April 11th, Down Home Harley-Davidson in Burlington, NC hosted the 5th Annual Kids Path Of Alamance-Caswell County Hospice Bike Show. The show was blessed by beautiful weather that brought out a lot of show bikes and spectators as well. All departments in the store were jumping. Motorclothes® had all their new accessories for the spring riding season and the Motorparts® counter guys stayed busy answering questions and helping customers with new accessories. Motorcycle sales are up and with the new 2015 model Harley’s available, sales can only get better. Outside, folks were being entertained by Dixie Revival and some great food was being served up by the Grillin’ and Chillin’ folks of the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter. As usual, it was also great to see Miss Down Home Harley-Davidson, Britteny Pierce, there helping with the day’s events and entertaining the folks in attendance. The main attraction of the day was the fact that the 5th Annual Kid’s Path of Alamance/Caswell Counties Hospice Bike Show was taking place at the dealership. Sixty-six motorcycles registered and every bike that registered received a custom made trophy. Thanks to Michael Covington for designing these one of a kind trophies. 50/50 tickets were sold with
over $400 going to the winner. Brandon Morris had the winning ticket and was kind enough to donate it back to the kids. Door prizes were too many to mention and great items were donated for the benefit. Home made baked goods were available as well. In all, over $20,000 and counting was raised for Kids Path of Hospice. After the show, a custom motorcycle was raffled at Lucky’s during the after party. All went well and none other than Wayne Bruner won the motorcycle. Heard he had bought the very last ticket before the raffle began. Thanks goes out to all the bike show participants and those who attended the show. Thanks also to those who donated their time and donated to this worthy cause. Trax In Thomasville
By: Rick Gammons What was old is new again. Trax, a downtown Thomasville establishment, has been there for a while. The main difference is that now Rusty and Jana own it. With a total renovation and a biker friendly attitude, it looks like Trax is going to be a major biker hangout. Now, the patrons of Trax are quite an eclectic group. While young people DO hang there, it is generally an older crowd. Friday night, May 1, started a new chapter for Trax. It was their grand opening, and what a time it was! To understand that, you need to understand the size of the bar. It is long and thin, about 18 foot wide and 40 to 50 feet long, with a kick ass deck in the alley out back. This Friday there must have been 50 to 60 people in there - all night till they closed. They have been busy every time Peggy and I have been there, but this night was insane! You could not help getting to know everybody there because everyone was in close. We met so many friendly people that their names started to run together. Everyone had an “out of the park” experience. Their disc jock was a favorite also. I remarked that I had not heard anything newer than 1975, when about that time Kid Rock hit it. I guess some newer stuff sneaked in. It’s all good! Folks, you need to get over there. They have a well stocked
bar with beer, wine and liquor. Prices are good and Jana and Hanna are witty bartenders and are easy on the eye. You need to get over to 46 E. Main Street in downtown Thomasville, NC ASAP. Look for their ad in this issue and be sure to tell them that you read about Trax in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine.

Federal Legislation Would Ensure That Three-Wheeled Automobiles Are Not Classified As Motorcycles On March 10, 2015 Senator David Vitter (R-LA) introduced legislation (www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/senatebill/685/text) that would create a new class of vehicle, reports the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. S. 685 – Autocycle Safety Act would create a new class of vehicles known as autocycles, to accommodate a growing trend in vehicle design. An emerging vehicle style, three-wheeled enclosed vehicles equipped with a steering wheel are growing in popularity. These types of vehicles have been lumped in with motorcycles and therefore tagged and registered as motorcycles. Clearly these vehicles are not motorcycles and they do need their own category. It is easy to see why the efficient, affordable, transportation would catch on so quickly. U.S. Senate file 685 would require the new class to meet both motorcycle safety standards as well as passenger vehicle standards in vehicles weighing less than 10,000 pounds. These standards include seating systems, belted occupant protection, child restraints, roof crush resistance, and flammability protections. There are many new three-wheeled vehicles coming into the marketplace. Some examples are the Polaris Slingshot and Toyota i-Road (built by Elio Motors). Elio is based out of Senator Vitter’s home state of Louisiana. Senator Vitter is the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure. It remains to be seen whether this is the answer to this growing vehicle class, but with numbers climbing something is going to have to happen with government vehicle classes. According to the Elio webpage, over 40,000 of the enclosed three-wheeled vehicles have been reserved. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation will keep you updated on this issue. Days Of Thunder IX
By: Kickstart & Donut Thunder Tower HarleyDavidson celebrated its 9th Anniversary this year by throwing its annual Days Of Thunder Celebration during the weekend of April 24th – 26th. Extensive planning was done in order to create an event that Thunder Tower customers have not yet experienced during one of the dealership’s events. This event offered a “Music Series Experience” in addition to the SC BBQ Cook-off, Ms. Thunder Tower competition, car and bike show, and more vendors than previous years. This year, VIP badges and packets were offered for the Saturday “Music Series” experience. They were first offered to potential vendors as a way to give them priority vendor space, parking, banners on stage as well as VIP badges to disperse throughout their company and/or guests. The VIP badges were then for sale to the public. These individual badges would be valid during Saturday’s events; allow access to the HOG private bathrooms, a VIP table in the roped off area under a tent during Saturdays music series, access to the VIP lounge with food, personal VIP beer tub, and access to the main stage at 4:30. Friday was primarily a “final set up” day. From 9am until 4pm, The BBQ Competition teams were welcomed and assigned their cooking spaces. The BBQ teams had a meeting at 5pm and were given pork butts to be cooked throughout the night. The original plan included a meticulous schedule of backto-back bands throughout the day and various activities. Unfortunately, a rainstorm moved in Saturday morning and
did not let up until late afternoon. This storm was quite severe at times, which not only affected the activities of the day, but the attendance as well. The SC BBQ Association and judges felt that it was in the best interest of the organization to cancel the tastings to the public, however, the judging still took place. The silver lining here was that whole butts could be purchased for $20, and a BBQ plate could be purchased in the canteen for $5. At 4pm, Generation Axe from Greenville, SC rocked it. The dealership closed at 6pm. At 6:30pm Carnival of Crue, a Motley Crue tribute band, began playing followed by Appetite for Destruction, the ultimate GNR tribute band. Sunday was a gorgeous day. Gates opened at 10am, and Thunder Tower birthday cake was being served and beer was being sold. Kickstands were up at 11am for the Annual Birthday Ride, led by led by TTH-D with assistance from Warhorse. Brent Lundy, scheduled for Saturday, took the stage and played until 12:30. DJ Brazzell, also booked for Saturday, played music until the Miss Thunder Tower pageant began at 1:30. By 2:15 the judges announced Brittany Orr of Columbia, SC as the Ms. Thunder Tower IX pageant winner. DB Bryant and Pinetop Lightning took the stage after the Ms. Thunder Tower Pageant and continued until shortly after 5pm. There was a large crowd and the beer trailer sold out of beer! Sunday’s weather definitely saved the event. Well, The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine showed their support all weekend despite the bad weather. We got to meet a lot of bikers from near and far, take lots of pictures, and made our name stand for what we are, THE Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. The 2015 South Carolina State H.O.G. Rally By:WildThing Seventeen months ago at the closing ceremony of the last SC State H.O.G. Rally in North Myrtle Beach, we wondered what Anderson, SC had to offer as a rally site. Now we know. The “Electric City” is a jewel in upstate SC with lots of friendly people, plenty of amenities for travelers, a cool downtown historic district, and most importantly to ‘Hoggers’, a great Harley-Davidson dealer! In fact, Timms Harley-Davidson is the oldest dealership in South Carolina and the site for many of the rally activities. Holiday Inn of Anderson, the host hotel, welcomed us with open arms! When we checked in there was a lot of people doing the same, but they had extra staff on hand and were very cordial and friendly. Kim Ellison of the Holiday Inn staff did a great job! The lobby and meeting rooms were set up to accommodate registration and communications between rally goers and the coordinators. Dennis Chapman did a great job as Rally Coordinator. Along with his entire committee and a host of volunteers, they put on a very enjoyable rally. The opening ceremony was held at Timms H-D on Thursday evening. The Pompous Pig BBQ folks were on hand serving up delicious plates of BBQ and filled the air with aroma that made my mouth water. The ceremony began with Dennis calling for all to recognize members of the military in attendance along with law enforcement and first responders. Then the Honor Guard from Shaw Air force Base presented the colors and Dave Hittinger led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Kristi LeFever stepped up to the mic and sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. Dennis welcomed the attendees and proceeded to introduce Cindy Johnson, H.O.G. Senior Regional Coordinator and Kipp Podlewski, Indirect Procurement Director from the HarleyDavidson Motor Company, and Rocky Timms, the sponsoring dealer. He then acknowledged the other rally sponsors and presented them with plaques with the rally graphic on it, their name and year. The graphic, by the way was original art by
Terri Collier from Thunder Riders H.O.G. Chapter. The committee skillfully utilized a text messaging system that would alert you to any changes in scheduling and locations. This came in handy as outdoor events and rides had to be switched with indoor activities and venue changes on Friday and Saturday due to weather. Then what everybody was waiting for - the drawings and 50/50! They drew for 3 H-D Dealer gift cards worth $250 each and there were 3 50/50 drawings worth over $300 each. On Friday morning, a large group gathered at Timms H-D and headed out on a ride to the Nantahala National Forest. It was a beautiful 60-mile or so ride out through the countryside led by Tim Jones of Electric City H.O.G on a sunny morning. When we arrived at the Nantahala National Forest, and parked, there was a ½ mile trek to an overlook to view the Whitewater Falls. The falls were just beautiful! In preparing to ride back, one had a choice of riding to a lake front tavern, Tiki Hut, for lunch, riding over to Greenville Harley-Davidson for a H.O.G. Rally Lunch & Party, or ride back to the host hotel to participate in the bike games. When weather threatened and the bike games moved from Saturday at Wendell’s to Friday at Holiday Inn, they accommodated it and even brought out a cart with iced down beverages! There was the usual array of bike games, the slow race, road kill (scooping up stuffed toys in a fish net), placing a tennis ball on top of a cone, dropping straws in bottles, and the ever-favorite: plunger and toilet paper roll contest. You all know what I mean – does anyone know official names for these silly games? Me either, but everyone had fun with their motorcycles! Next on the agenda, we all rode back over to Timms H-D for a Night Light Bike Show. Had to wait for it to get dark to really appreciate the lights. They were all cool, but only one gets to win. In this case, Stan Shannon’s trike took top honors and the trophy was a lighted version of the official SC State

H.O.G. Rally graphic. It was real nice. Then Dennis took over the mic from the band and gave away 6 Harley-Davidson gift cards worth $250 each to lucky ticket-holders, pulled a ticket for a Volunteer to receive $100, and the 50/50’s, 3 worth over $300 each! Everybody loves Dennis, “The Money Man”! It was a full day, to say the least. The dreaded forecasted rainstorm hit in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Dennis’ call to move the bike games back to Friday was a good one. The morning guided ride was in jeopardy and the breakfast bar at the Holiday Inn was packed with motorcyclists with long faces. Outside under the front portico, the rally committee was giving away more money. All you had to do was pop a balloon mounted on a board with a dart and written on a little piece of paper inside the balloon was the amount you won. I saw people walk away with hundred dollar bills, fifties, and several got twenties! It stopped raining in time for folks to ride over to Fuddruckers for the Michelin Tire Tech Talk. The engineers from Michelin were on hand to explain the technology behind their wonderful line of motorcycle tires. And they had goodies to hand out like t-shirts, flashlights, key chains, some really cool metal logo signs, and a set of Michelin motorcycle tires. Then in the early afternoon, folks trouped back into the meeting room at Fuddruckers to play Biker Bingo. It was an overflow crowd that took over part of the dining room as players vied for the prizes. The closing ceremony was under the shelter at Timms Harley-Davidson. Dennis presented bronze eagles to the committee and plaques to the assistants and thanked them for hard work. The Rally Committee had organized a Passport Tour where participants would visit the sponsors’ businesses and get a ‘passport’ stamp and win cash for the most stamps: $500 for first, $250 for second, and $100 for third. They had an ABC’s Tour for those who wanted to visit the sponsoring SC HD Dealers and win $550 worth of Harley gear. They pulled winning tickets for a NASCAR Experience, two travel vouchers
valued at $599 each, a Harley-Davidson football autographed by Dabo Swinney, and four $500 Visa Debit Cards. The big giveaway was a trip for two to Hawaii and a bike rental to attend the H.O.G. Rally in Hawaii. The Harley reps, Cindy and Kipp took the stage and thanked everyone for their participation and then pulled the winning ticket for the traditional one-of-a-kind engraved knife. This incredible evening ended with the announcement that the 2016 SC State H.O.G. Rally would again be in Anderson under the direction of Ken Higginbotham. I have to say this was a wonderful weekend with so many activities you couldn’t get to them all, lots of scenic places to ride, fun parties, and competitions, and capped off with cash and goodies to take home, along with great memories. 10th Annual Hogs & Rags Rally
By Wendy Rogers Hogs & Rags held their 10th Annual Rally Ride that went from Fayetteville, NC to Myrtle Beach, SC’s Magaritaville Restaurant at Broadway At The Beach on April 25th. It was totally escorted all the way! Even though it rained pretty much all the way there, it was still a successful and safe ride there. The weather was not cooperating with us, but the mission was still completed. This event was part of the Dogwood Festival of Fayetteville and has been growing every year to become the biggest motorcycle day rally in the Carolinas. The HOGS & RAGS RALLY! - The premier community charity event that combines convertibles and motorcycles, great food, good causes, and a good time. All makes and models of bikes, trikes, street rods, muscle cars, and any vehicle are welcome. Let me be clear about this: Even though the name of the event is Hogs and Rags and hogs usually represent Harley-Davidsons and rags usually means convertible cars (that is how the event started) we invite all motorcycles and cars to participate. There was door prizes and raffle tickets for a chance to win $2500 cash and raffle tickets for some guns. This is a wonderful event, which supports wonderful causes and we want everyone to know they are a great part in helping this charity succeed. We had about 70 bikes and 27 cars, which is not bad for a rainy day! It was so amazing this year, the GOLDEN KNIGHTS jumped in at the Rocking A Ranch after breakfast. They were doing flips in the air and performing various stunts. We would like to thank them for doing this for us this year and maybe can get them again in the future. Go to Golden Knight Hogs and Rags on You Tube and watch this amazing video that was captured by Kenneth Wasley. We did a raffle for 3 guns and a knife. You did not have to be present to win these items. We would like to congratulate the following winners of our guns and knife raffle: Ticket # 3228 won the shotgun donated by National Pawn. Ticket # 2952 won the Del-Ton AR15. Ticket # 0500 won the knife. Ticket # 2841 won the Springfield M1A1 SOCOM rifle donated by
Guns Plus. We also raffled off $2500 cold cash, in which the five people that were drawn decided to split with each other so they ALL walked away with $500 cold cash instantly!! Again Fayetteville Mayor Nat Robertson and his wife Kim, who are also motorcycle enthusiasts, led this year’s event. They were leading us along with Sheriff Deputy escort, all the way to Myrtle Beach, SC. Knowing that the ride will benefit others just makes the day that much better. Proceeds will benefit the Green Beret Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation. Even though there is a Sheriff escort for the entire ride from Fayetteville to Myrtle Beach, SC, the Hogs & Rags organizers know that keeping hundreds of riders safe is a huge undertaking. Before the ride we give them a safety briefing and it covers the route, hand and arm signals and things to do in a ride and how to ride safely as a group. And it is nice to have the cops in front of you instead of behind you! While everyone loves a good time, raising money for a charity is a big part of the Hogs & Rags mission. For anyone who rides or chooses to donate, this is where your money will go: American Cancer Society. The goal of the American Cancer Society (ACS) is to prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from cancer. They are committed to fighting cancer through balanced programs of research, education, patient service, advocacy and rehabilitation. Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation. Kidsville News Literacy and Education Foundation’s mission is to improve literacy, education, and character development among America’s youth by providing support for various early literacy and learning-based initiatives nationwide. Founded in 2011 this charity provides literacy, education, and character development resources FREE to children K-6th grade. The foundation approves grants to qualified projects and institutions that endeavor to instill strong reading and education skills and solid character-development traits in America’s youth. 2015 ABATE Rally Awareness Ride
By: Kickstart & Donut May 3rd was a fantastic day for the gathering of bikers all around. We started the day at 10:30am with a meet and greet at Carolina Honda Powerhouse (a proud sponsor of many events) on Buckner Road. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff made their rounds to introduce themselves and take pictures of the crowd. At 1:00 pm we had a police escort to the State House steps. The ride was short but sweet, it was an unforgettable slow, awesome ride. People came out of their homes and businesses just to stand by the road to watch and wave as we rolled down the road. Once we got to the State House ABATE members and supporters covered the steps with smiling faces from South Carolina and beyond. Our first speaker was Reverend David Dooley. He started off with a moment of silence for the 87 bikers that lost their lives in 2014, which was lower than the previous year’s total of 126 in 2013. Next we had Ed Hamond to present the flag in front of the crowd. Russ Marchese played the National Anthem on his trumpet. Another guest speaker, Kevin Schwedo of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, spoke on the importance of getting special endorsements on driver licenses and rider training. Next we had the ringing of the Bubba Bell for those that lost a family member or friend on a motorcycle.
Each person who wanted to was ask to come and say the name of their fallen rider and ring the Bubba Bell. Phil Stone, President of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association spoke on their organization and the safety of the mission. Purple Pan Cindy spoke about accident scene management and why that training is important. Joe Dawes spoke about our state rider education program and what the program is doing this year. Chad Fuller with The Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group® spoke about accident issues including having the correct amount of insurance. Finally, Kevin Schwedo of the SCDMV presented the award for Motorcycle Community Leader to Jim Wertman of Carolina Honda Powerhouse in Columbia and Gene Royer of All American Heating and Air. Thank you to everyone who participated for helping make South Carolina a better state to ride motorcycles in.

They recently did surgery to put in his peritoneal dialysis tube into his stomach, and also connected his vain to an artery in his upper arm and raised it to the surface. Because of this infection they have to remove the tube that would have provided him treatment for his dialysis. His diabetes doesn’t allow him to heal quickly, and my father is a fighter, and this new struggle has become harder every day. We need help to pay the medical bills that are slowly but surely growing. All he wants is to be here for his 5 grandchildren, his 2 daughters, his son, and his loving and devoted wife of 20 years. He has so much life left, and so much fight. A moment with him is never dull, and he is known for his bold and amazingly characteristic personality and his never-ending humor, even when times are tough. This has put him out of work and insurance only covers so much, please support my father in this fight. His grandchildren and family still have so much to learn from him, and so many more laughs to share. Also included is an excerpt from Lynn Burris: “I would like to thank everyone who came to Gunner’s benefit this weekend and the chili cook off weekend. RIP Tommy Toe
Story and photo by Alan Dockery Another old riding buddy is gone. Cancer took my friend, Thomas Bittner, recently. I got to know Tommy hanging out at Riders’ Roost. Over the years we rode the North Carolina mountains, camped, partied, told old stories and jokes many times. He was the guy who would call to tell folks not to bring food, he was cooking and what’s on the menu for the weekend. Tommy was originally from the Boston area, but we quickly found the things we had in common. He loved motorcycles and sailboats. In his last year, we spent several days on his pontoon boat. I’ll miss talking about the cool old motorcycles we grew up with and sailing adventures. Both of us served in the U.S. Air Force. Tommy was an aircraft mechanic working on B-52 bombers and KC-135 tankers from 1969 to 1972. He was stationed in Guam and Okinawa supporting the War in Vietnam. Tommy asked that folks donate to the following organizations in his memory. Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675 Liberty Lane Hospice/W. G. 2015 SC Midlands Ride For Kids By: Kickstart & Donut The 2015 SC Midlands Ride For Kids was held on Sunday, April 19th. It began at Lexington High School on Augusta Highway in Lexington, SC. It was a cloudy day, but the real bikers showed their best support for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and kids with brain tumors. Several PBT survivors were there. More than 50 bikes participated and as of ride time donations totaled over $21,000. Ride For Kids fundraisers earn incentives and awards. The individual, motorcycle club/ chapter and motorcycle business who raised the most were; Ed Apelian ($4,280), Gold Wing Road Riders Association SC-P ($4,253), and Carolina Honda Powerhouse ($4,971). The top non-motorcycle group was Team Caitlin ($645). All participants received free beverages, breakfast and pastries, and a light lunch. When we came back from the ride, Jeff Flanders of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department emceed the event. Some gave speeches and told their heart felt stories and the kids introduced themselves to everyone. A special shout out to Conor, who is growing his hair out to donate to as he battles his illness. Blowie, the Columbia Blowfish baseball team mascot, entertained participants and baseballs were given out to the kids. Dalton Shull Jr. won the drawing for a new Honda Rebel 250, and Reggie Levesque won a Scorpion helmet. A Cardo

Riders Remembered Angels Of Support Family Day
By: Kickstart and Donut Riders Remembered Angels Of Support Family Day was held at Harley Haven in Irmo, SC on April 11th. This year the proceeds from the event went to Kyle Gause, who lost half of his left leg on August 1, 2014 after a Ford Ranger struck him and fled the scene. He later saw the truck on the road and reported the vehicle to the police who arrested the suspect. Kyle, who is a single father, has gone through surgery and rehab and is coming along good. Many people showed up at Harley Haven on April 11th to raise funds to help with his medical bills. The weather was perfect. Food and sponsors were all around.
The band Chalkline played for free to help sponsor this event with Skunk. Family day was also involved with all kinds of activities. It was a great day in SC.

providing chicken wings. Before long, folks start making their way to the grassy area in front of the Memorial Wall as the service starts. Brandon from Smokin’ delivered a fitting sermon on friendship. When it comes down to it, that is the main reason we were all there that day - because of friends that had passed on and because of our friends that are still with us. When Winston-Salem Mayor, Allen Joines, read the Proclamation declaring the first Sunday in May as Freedom Memorial Wall Sunday, he reminded us to cherish the time we have with loved ones now as well as remembering the good times with those who passed. This year, the Naval Reserve Color Guard presented our nation’s flag as the National Anthem was played. One thing that struck me this year as friends and family placed flowers on the wall was that folks lined up several times for more than one name that was read. At the end of the program family and friends are invited to take part in releasing balloons into the air. The Freedom Memorial Wall Sunday is a special annual event. If you would like to know more about how to submit a name to be placed on the Freedom Memorial Wall, stop by Smokin’ Harley-Davidson at 3441 Myer Lee Drive in Winston-Salem or online at www.SmokinHarley.com.
MADE DAILY!
By: Caroline In some ways it seems like the first Freedom Memorial wall established in 1996 was just a short time ago. As one looks at the many names added each year to the marble tablets, you realize that time is moving way too fast. Each year, the first thing I look for are the new names added then look for the familiar names of friends as I go through my own ritual of remembrance in my mind. Curly and Laura Williams started this special day that has brought comfort to so many, and Smokin’ Harley-Davidson has committed to carry on the tradition. The day starts with Mark Leonard from the Winston Salem HOG Chapter announcing the day’s schedule. Mark also announced the many groups who had come to show their support and help to make this event special each year: Winston Salem HOG Chapter, Winston Wings, as well as HOG and Wing Chapters from all over the state. Riders are lined up and ready to leave by 11 am for a leisurely cruise through the open countryside of Forsyth County. By time we returned to Smokin’ the Winston-Salem HOG Chapter has a barbeque meal ready with the Winston Wings club

Denver Defense Bike Night Story and photo by Alan Dockery Have you ever been to bike night at a shooting range? Me neither. So, I had to go. I ain’t into celebrating Cinco de Mayo. But when Denver Defense in Denver, NC, had Bike Night on May 5th, I rode on down Highway 16 to join them. Looked like it was a hit as bikers kept riding in and the range was full while I was there. Bud Cesena served 37 years in law enforcement and joined Denver Defense as a consultant. “I wanted to do some new things. No range that I’m aware of does a bike night. Because I ride a lot I thought it would be a good idea,” said Bud who rides a 2014 BMW R 1200 RT. Denver Defense opened about eight months ago with twelve 25 yard lanes and six 50 yard lanes. Their facility was purpose built, brand new, from the beginning to be a shooting range. The owners included state of the art ventilation, targets, and all the things that make a great range. They spent a lot of money making sure that everything is safe and modern. “We have the only 50 yard indoor range in North Carolina,”

Bud said. “You can shoot anything at our range. We have a 50 caliber Barrett that you can rent. We can qualify police departments here with their shotguns and rifles. We are going to get involved in that.” There’s more than just a range at Denver Defense. You can buy all kinds of guns and accessories. They offer concealed carry classes and have a martial arts instructor who teaches women’s self-defense classes. “We teach an AR class and teach proper cleaning. Denver Defense can help you with anything that has to do with handguns and rifles. We have guys who specialize in building guns for you. We are a class 3 dealer so we can sell short barrel rifles and silencers. Our staff can walk you through the whole process of completing the ATF forms,” Bud said Bike night at Denver Defense was more than just ride in, hang out, and shoot. Riders were greeted by members of the West Lincoln High School JROTC handing out kick stand pucks. Tyler Hatley and Little Mountain Band was playing. Traditions BBQ was serving up tasty plates of food. The staff plans more bike nights and possibly a bike show and vintage bike gathering. Denver Defense is a convenient and full service range for the folks in the area and those who come to visit. “We will stay involved with the folks here in Lincoln County. We really want to be a community range,” Bud said. “We are going to support the high school’s pellet rifle league and hopefully someday get them involved in some DCM Matches and things like that. We are the friendly place to come shoot. It’s not intimidating. We have ladies on the staff in sales and instruction for ladies who come here.” Checkout www.DenverDefenseUSA.com for more information such as the list of weapons you can rent to shoot before you buy.

ALR Post 55 Bike Night If you happen to be in the neighborhood on the second Friday of the month, stop by Post 55 on Miller Street. It is not for everyone, though. If you don’t like hanging out with friendly folks that like bikes, nice weather, relaxing, and a good game of corn hole, then you might not feel comfortable here! One of the best reasons to come by is to help this group to continue to their support of Veterans and their families. Stay tuned for more information in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar and American Legion Riders Post 55 on Facebook.
By: Caroline The American Legion Riders at Post 55 in Winston-Salem, NC kicked off this year’s bike night on May 8th. These great folks open this event every year to everyone, and from the looks of things a good crowd came by. I enjoyed hanging out on their spacious patio and listening to Joey Whitaker who entertained us all with some great music. And, you just can’t beat hotdogs and hamburgers cooked on the grill.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!
The older we get the wiser we become. We have disconnected our home alarm system and quit our neighborhood watch. We brought two Pakistani flags on e-Bay and raised them in the front yard, one at each corner, plus a black flag of “ISIS” in the center. Now, the local police, sheriff, FBI, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security and other agencies are all watching the house 24/7. We have never felt safer and we’re saving $ 49.95 a month.
which the driver jokingly replies “Mexican eggs.” The blond lady cop obviously doesn’t believe this so she takes a look in the trailer. She opens the back door and shocked, quickly shuts it and locks it. She calls for immediate backup from headquarters, the Border Patrol and the Swat Team. The dispatcher asks what emergency she has that requires so many officers. “I stopped a tractor-trailer with 20,000 Mexican eggs in it. Two have hatched and they’ve already stolen a bicycle.”
A man staggered into a hospital with a concussion, multiple bruises, two black eyes, and a five iron wrapped tightly around his throat. Naturally, the Doctor asked him, “What happened to you?” “Well, I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife, when at a difficult hole, we both sliced our golf balls into a field of cattle. We went to look for them and while I was looking around I noticed one of the cows had something white at its rear end.” “I walked over, lifted its tail, and sure enough, there was a golf ball with my wife’s monogram on it - stuck right in the middle of the cow’s arse. Still holding the cow’s tail up, I yelled to my wife, “Hey, this looks like yours!’” “I don’t remember much after that!”
A man returns home a day early from a business trip. It’s after midnight. While en route home he asks the cabby if he would be a witness. The man suspects his wife is having an affair and he wants to catch her in the act. For $100, the cabby agrees. Quietly arriving home, the husband and cabby tip toe into the bedroom. The husband switches on the lights, yanks the blanket back and there is his wife in bed with another man! The husband puts a gun to the naked man’s head. The wife shouts, “Don’t do it! I lied when I told you I inherited money. He paid for the Porsche I gave you. He paid for our new cabin cruiser. He paid for your football season tickets. He paid for our house at the lake. He paid for your Hawaiian golf vacation. He paid for our country club membership, and he even pays the monthly dues!” Shaking his head from side-to-side, the husband lowers the gun. He looks over at the cabby and says, “What would you do?” The cabby replies, “Me? I’d cover his a$$ with that blanket before he catches a cold!!”
It chatters constantly at high speeds. 3. Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much. 4. The intake is placed way to close to the exhaust and finally, 5. The maintenance costs are outrageous. “Hmmmm, you may have some good points there and it may be true that my invention is flawed... “ God said to Arthur. “But the last time that I checked, more men are riding my invention than yours.”

Two engineering students were biking across a university campus when one said, “Where did you get such a great bike?” The second engineer replied, “Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, “Take what you want.” The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, “Good choice: The clothes probably wouldn’t have fit you anyway.”
Two Mexicans are riding a bicycle on a road about 15 miles outside of Lafayette, LA. One of the bike’s tires goes flat and they start hitching a lift back into town. A friendly trucker stops to see if he can help and the Mexicans ask him for a ride. He tells them they can ride in the trailer if they could fit in with 20,000 bowling balls he is hauling. They manage to squeeze themselves and their bike into the back and the driver shuts the doors and gets on his way. Wanting to make up time the trucker speeds up. Sure enough a blonde cop pulls him over for speeding. The officer asks the driver what he is carrying, to
The inventor Arthur Davidson, of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Corporation, died and went to heaven. At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur, “Since you’ve been such a good man and your Motorcycles have changed the world, your reward is, you can hang out with anyone you want in Heaven.” Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, “I want to hang out with God.” St. Peter took Arthur to the Throne Room, and introduced him to God. Arthur then asked God, “Hey, aren’t you the inventor of women? “God said, “Ah, yes. “ “Well, “ said Arthur, “professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your invention.” God was somewhat taken back, and when He asked what the flaws might be; Arthur Davidson produced a list for Him to read. 1. There’s too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusions 2.
I was walking through the mall, and saw that there was a “Muslim Book Store.” I was wondering what exactly was in a “Muslim book store” so I went on in. I was wandering around taking a look and the clerk stopped me asked if he could help me, I imagine I didn’t look like his normal clientele. So I asked for a copy of the U.S. Immigration Policy Book regarding Muslims. The Clerk said, “F*** OFF, GET OUT & STAY OUT!” I said, “Yes, that’s the one. Do you have that in paperback?” As a woman sat down at her seat on the 50yard line for the Super Bowl, a man came along and asked her if anyone is sitting in the seat next to her. “No,” she said, “the seat is empty.” “This is incredible,” said the man. “Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Super Bowl, the biggest sporting event in the world, and not use it?” Somberly, the woman says, “Well... the seat belongs to my husband he and I were to come here together, but he passed away. This is the first Super Bowl we have not been to together since we got married in ‘57.” “Oh I’m sorry to hear that, that’s terrible. But couldn’t you find someone else - a friend or relative or even a neighbor to take the seat?” The woman shakes her head, “No, they’re all at the funeral.” Two guys get pulled over while drinking and driving. The driver tells his friend, “Peel the labels off these beer bottles, and we’ll each stick one on our forehead. Now, shove all of the bottles under the front seat. Just let me do all the talking.” The cop walks up and shines his flashlight into the car. “Have you been drinking?” he asks. “No, sir,” the drunk answers. “We haven’t had a thing to drink tonight.” “Then what on earth are those beer labels doing on your foreheads?” “We’re both alcoholics,” says the drunk. “We’re on the patch.”

Out Of Control
Have you ever had that gut feeling you just lost control of your bike? Maybe too fast in a curve and you feel the weight of your scoot pushing you off the road, or trying to get stopped in a hurry and a wheel locks up. I remember taking a left at a busy intersection, kinda in a hurry, probably going too fast, but with my front brake applied ever so slightly rolled up on a flattened can. My front wheel stopped instantly and I began going straight rather than turning, leaning over way too far. When I realized control was lost I released the brake rolled off the can and lived to ride another day. Thank you Jesus! Controlling our mind can be hard at times. Like when you wake up in the middle of the night, not able to sleep, and start thinking about shame, regret, guilt, money, relationships, etc. We can quickly loose control of our thoughts. Our minds begin to race in and out of control. But Jesus said he would send us a comforter to help us in these times of being out of control. John 14:16 says, “And I will pray to the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that He might abide with you forever.” This is a promise from Jesus, so that the Holy Spirit may remind us we are losing control of our thoughts, and can start thinking Godly things. We as bikers are always taking part in fundraisers for needy causes. So when your mind begins to race, focus you thoughts on helping others. The word of God tells us not to be weary in well doing. If
you feel out of control, please ask Jesus into your heart. He is waiting to help you, through His Spirit, to regain control according to His will. Ride safe, and remember try Jesus. In “HIS” wind, Popkorn

Bikers Restoring Faith
By: Robin S. Melton On March the 16th, I received a phone call that no one should ever have to get. It was a normal Monday afternoon. I had just finished my lunch and was settling back behind my desk when I got the devastating news. My husband was gone. The whole next week was a total blur. The outpouring of love through phone calls, text messages, and people just stopping by to visit was unreal. But the calls that I remember the most were from our biker family. The men and women who called or came by that just cried with me as we tried to comfort each other and try to make sense of what had happened was amazing. If you have never cried with “big scary biker” or had a close to 7-foot tall man cry on your 5’5” head, I don’t suggest it. But they were a great comfort to his family as well as to me. Anyone that knew my husband, Greg Melton, knew that he loved to ride. He was a field supervisor and traveled a lot with his job, but when he was in town he always made time for the two things that were most important in his life, his family and his motorcycles. He would strike out on his own with no real destination, but would always find a friend or two somewhere along the way to ride with. From these chance encounters we made so many friends in the biker community that became more than friends. They became our family. In his passing, it became apparent how much this family loved and cared for us. Bikers in general, sometimes, get a bad name, but our biker family continuously proves that stereotype wrong. When his mother and I sat down with the funeral director, she asked me if I thought the bikers would come and ride for his funeral. I don’t remember my exact words to her, but it was something to the affect of, “It’s not “if”. It’s do you want them there?” So, that evening I started making phone calls and spreading the word. On Saturday, March 21st, our biker family took one last ride with Greg. They showed up, 80+ bikes strong. Most were riding double. In the receiving line as they came through these men and women cried with Greg’s family and hugged them like they had been friends all their lives, even though for many of them this was the first time they had ever met. It was truly an amazing sight to see. The following week, Greg’s grandmother asked me to come to lunch at her house. I was the first one there, so I had a few moments with her, just the two of us. At her kitchen table she shared something that rocked me to my core, but also gave me great peace like I hadn’t had since that horrible day. She said that her faith was shaken by Greg’s passing. In the 5 years that I have been a part of this wonderful family, she has lost
2 daughters, her husband, and now her first grandson. Her faith would probably rival the Pope himself and she had just confessed to me that her faith was shaken. But in that same moment she said something that I will never forget, “When I saw all those motorcycles there to ride for Greg, I knew that God and Greg were both there with us.” She felt them there and I have to tell you, I did to. We tried to thank all the bikers who were there that day and all the days since, but they keep telling us, we had to be there and that it was an honor for them to be asked to be there. It was truly a blessing to have so many come to pay tribute to him and support to those of us who remain. I know that the biker community is asked to ride in funerals all the time. Families ask them to escort the family and they are more than willing to come out and do it. Being asked to ride should not be taken lightly. It doesn’t matter if you’re there as a sense of duty or to show honor for one of your own, please hold your head up high and know that you are doing a great service. This service is not only to the memory of those who have passed, but also to their loved ones. I can tell you from experience, I saw a miracle on that Saturday and I saw the faith of an almost broken woman restored. Our loss was great, but those riders helped more than they will ever know. So, please remember my story the next time you’re asked to take that last ride with someone. It is to honor them, but also to help the family, who may need their faith restored and need someone to lean on more than you will ever realize. Ride safe my friends.

By: Kris Weiss Formally known as the Open House, the Ray Price Season Opener didn’t disappoint. The weather was perfect for the biggest bike event of the season. The streets filled up with all types of motorcycles. The parking lot and grass were filled with vendors of every kind including Wild Bill the Pinstriper, Raleigh Hydro Graphics, Season Opener sponsor Terry Nobles Nationwide Insurance Agency, Gary Poole Attorney, and various food vendors and charities. Registration for the Bike Show, sponsored by Misfit Industries, started at 9am. Bike show entries from around the area including builders Crazy Beaver Customs, Epic Choppers, and Widowmaker Custom Design And Repair were looking forward to grabbing one of the top prizes. The band, Krystal Blade, provided live music. Their smooth-rock sound had everybody dancing and enjoying their favorite songs. The event featured the Grand Opening of The Garage at Ray Price, a custom accessory shop next door to the dealership.

Harley-Davidson Rolls Out Free Riding Academy Training To All U.S. Military MILWAUKEE, May 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- From the flight deck of the USS Yorktown, Harley-Davidson today announces it is offering all current and former U.S. military free Riding Academy motorcycle training. The new “Learn to Ride” program, open to active-duty, retired, reservists and veterans, begins on Armed Forces Day, May 16 and runs through Sept. 13. Harley-Davidson teamed up with U.S. Army veteran and two-time Paralympian, Heath Calhoun, and six riders who are also in the military, to make today’s announcement by demonstrating fundamental motorcycle riding exercises aboard the USS Yorktown in Charleston, S.C. “As a veteran, and a rider, I have found that nothing is more therapeutic than getting on my bike and taking a ride,” said Calhoun, Wounded Warrior Project® Alumnus and owner of a 2014 Harley-Davidson Tri-Glide. “I am honored to help Harley-Davidson empower all of us who have served to find comfort on the open road.” All stateside military can take advantage of this offer by visiting a Harley-Davidson dealer or going to h-d.com/ militarylearntoride. If Riding Academy is not available in a particular area, Harley-Davidson will issue a Harley-Davidson gift card for the cost of the certified motorcycle safety program. Those currently deployed outside the U.S. can also submit the “Learn to Ride” form by September 13 and will receive a voucher for free motorcycle safety training that is good through 2016. “For us at Harley-Davidson this is our way to thank the millions of people who have courageously defended our country and everyone’s personal freedom to ride,” said Christian Walters, managing director of U.S. Sales and Marketing at Harley-Davidson, and U.S. Army veteran. OPERATION PERSONAL FREEDOM™ Last November, Harley-Davidson announced a new alliance with Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) that focuses on improving the lives of service men and women who are living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This new program, dubbed Operation Personal Freedom, includes a new Harley-Davidson MotorClothes® collection with 10 percent of the sales supporting WWP’s efforts as well as various dealer events across the country focused on welcoming and celebrating our military heroes. By: Kris Weiss Team Powersports, Ray Price Harley-Davidson and Ray Price Triumph have teamed up to sponsor Capital City Bike Nights. The latest bike night, which takes place at Aversboro Restaurant and Sports Bar in Garner, NC, featured the Erik Smallwood Duo. Erik is a multiple Carolina Music Award nominee. Erik’s brand of music gets people involved and provides the perfect atmosphere for a fun bike night where people can just hang out and chill with their riding buddies. Also featured that night was a local bike builder, Crazy Beaver Customs. CBC brought some of their coolest motorcycles to show off to the crowd of about 200 people. From 6-9pm riders from all over the area enjoyed food and drink specials and talked motorcycle stuff. As a special feature of the night, the USO of NC was on hand to bring awareness to the need of the active military. They provided a bagpiper, color guard and Danielle Scolak, a fellow rider and member of the North Carolina Army National Guard, sang the National Anthem. Whether you want to be inside watching numerous televisions and huddled around the bar, outside underneath the open-air awnings, or out in the parking lot sitting on your bike, the atmosphere is just right for catching up with friends or sharing your motorcycle tales. Upcoming bands will include Day 2, Johnny Orr, and more! The Capital City Bike Night is the place to be every first and third Tuesday through October.

7th Annual Miles For Mutts Benefit
By: Terri Wall After a week of rain, it was a beautiful sight to see the sun shining on Saturday, April 18th, for the 7th Annual Miles For Mutts Benefit Ride. The bikes started rolling in and the parking lot was full and it filled our hearts with joy to see everyone coming out to support this event. We had sausage balls and biscuits along with a ton of fresh baked cookies, donuts, and sweet breads donated by T Distefano’s Bakery in Mebane, NC ready for them. Let’s just say, if you didn’t grab something from one of those boxes of goodies, you really missed out. Kickstands were up at noon and 175 bikes rolled out of Lucky’s Saloon as Tinker led us on a beautiful ride through Southern Alamance County to the first stop, the Ice Chest Bar and Grill, in Mebane. From there Tinker took us through the Northern part of Alamance County over to Crossroads Bar in Gibsonville, NC. Texas Roadhouse of Burlington was ready with delicious BBQ, chicken, corn, green beans, salad, and of course those yummy yeast rolls and cinnamon butter! Folks, Texas Roadhouse donated all the food for this event so when you are thinking about somewhere to eat, please go by and support Texas Roadhouse in Burlington and tell them “Thank You” for all they do for Alamance County and how much you enjoyed the food at the Miles For Mutts event. The Mason Lovette Band was there to crank out some tunes and to rock us through the evening. We sure hope all of you enjoyed them as much as we did. We held a special raffle for all the kids that were there before Mason Lovette went on stage. Billy Parrish donated a bicycle along with some other items again this year and we had a Monopoly pinball machine donated along with a lot of other items. The kids really enjoyed it and I think each of them walked away with something. The young man that won the bicycle also won the scooter but he turned around and gave it to little Landon. I did not write the young man’s name down, I apologize for that, but it really melted all our hearts to see him do this on his own. Landon has special needs and he was just thrilled. Everyone must have been in a giving mood because the 50/50 and the best and worst poker hands were all donated back! The 50/50 money was $450! That is what it is all about folks! We would like to say thank you to Barry Hicks and Chuck Gates for all you do at Lucky’s Saloon to support this event and for having the best bar in Alamance County! Thank You to all your staff and bartenders for making sure everyone was taken care of. You guys do a great job, not only at these events, but everyday. We have a great group of volunteers that deserve a big “Thank You”! We have been blessed over the last 7 years with people that are there to help and encourage us
with this event. We appreciate all of you for taking time out of your day to make sure that everything runs smoothly. We just can’t thank you enough. Thank you to all our sponsors! Lucky’s Saloon, Sunshine Realty & Property Management, Texas Roadhouse, Dragon Vaporz, American Self Storage, Adams Towing & Recovery, Down Home Harley-Davidson, Champs Counseling Center, GSR Exteriors, Aluminum Company of the Carolinas, Best Foot Forward, K & M Machine Repair, Blue Ribbon Diner, The Village Grill, Quality Collision Solutions, Alamance County YMCA, Mike Bullard at State Farm Insurance, and Paradise Printers. We are so grateful to have you believe in this great event. We want to thank Lauren at Crossroads and Carl at the Ice Chest and all the bartenders for handling the crowd when we arrived, Tinker, for planning a great ride again this year and for getting everyone back to Lucky’s Saloon safe and sound. We would also like to say a tremendous “Thank You” to The Misfitz and to all of those that helped block intersections on the ride! We were told by many what a great job you all did. Our focus is on everyone’s safety and we were so grateful to you all. Thank you Chuck, Tiffany, Cody, and all the Texas Roadhouse staff for the wonderful meal when we got back from our ride. There are just too many businesses that donated raffle items to list. We thank them all and appreciate everyone that went out and hit the streets collecting all these donations. The Compassionate Bikers of Alamance County, The Humane Society of Alamance County, and The Biscuit Foundation would like to say “Thank You” from the bottom of our hearts to all who supported this event. But most of all, “Thank You” from all the unwanted animals here in our county. You have helped give them a chance in so many ways to finding a forever home. This event would not be the success it is without all of you coming out and spending your hard earned money to support us. We hope everyone had a great time and don’t forget to spay and neuter your pets and please don’t shop for your next pet, ADOPT! Ride Safe! Ride Free!

International Female Ride Day At H-D Of Greensboro
By: Ghost Saturday, May 2nd, was International Female Ride Day, the only worldwide - synchronized motorcycle event of its kind. Vicki Gray (motoress.com), IFRD founder said, “For nine years now, women get out there and just ride, and that’s all I ever asked. Of course, I hope someday it will have a permanent place in women’s lives. Like Mother’s Day, for example.” International Female Ride Day At H-D of Greensboro was a day of firsts. 83-year-old Frances Lane rode on a motorcycle for the first time. It was the first time Sharon Drake had ridden a passenger. The mother - daughter duo was the highlight of the first celebration of International Female Ride Day in the Triad area. From 83-year-old Frances Lane to 21-year-old Megan Jarrett, women saddled up for an all-female, police-escorted scenic ride through Guilford and Alamance Counties. Greensboro HarleyDavidson sponsored the ride and following Garage party. “I love the camaraderie of women riders,” said Felicia Meekins. When “Fefe” began riding, there weren’t many women riders. “Riding was such a male-dominated thing for so many years. It’s great to see women come together in large numbers to acknowledge we are women who ride our own motorcycles and we’re good at it!” After the 60-mile ride, women returned to the dealership for lunch and a party. One of the most popular demonstrations was learning to pick up your motorcycle if you drop it. Greensboro H-D has been a leader in supporting women riders. The dealership owner, Mark Wheelihan, began the first H-D sponsored women-riders group, The Triad Bad Lasses, in 2012. The TBL are beginning their third year of the pilot program operating under the Harley Owners Group (HOG) organization. So will Frances Lane ride again? Yet bet. Will she climb
on behind her daughter? Of course. Will she wait another year for the women’s day ride? Not a chance! “She had a blast”, said her daughter, Sharon Drake. “She had the best time.”
