hile I hate to report that Thunder In The Smokies in Maggie Valley suffered through some rain at their rally on the weekend of May 3-5, it seems we got our wish and the rain every weekend cycle has been broken and replaced with summertime temperatures, giving people a different reason to complain(?)I don’t know about you, but I find motorcycle events to be more fun in the heat than the rain, aye? Can I get an “Amen”? While it was still in the cooler temperatures, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Bike night was dry and considered a success by any means. For a first-time event in the middle of Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Week, the attendance and the atmosphere were phenomenal look for the story in this issue for more details. At the 10th Annual AMCA Spring National Swap meet, we had already begun to experience the heat, but that didn’t deter the antique motorcycle crowd nor the parts scroungers from coming out in droves. Everyone remarked how nice it was not to have to deal with rain this year! And even though it was HOT, we endured it and, yes, we did enjoy it. This year, the celebration was in honor of the70th year of the Harley-Davidson HydraGlide. 1949 was the first year that the “Big Twin” models came standard with hydraulically damped telescopic front forks; Harley-Davidson’s marketing department promoted the new suspension systems by renaming the big twin models “Hydra Glide” for the 1950 model year. Now everyone that went, is back from Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Week, the “riding season” per say is in full swing in the Carolinas. Next on our list of events is The 20th Anniversary Smoke Out at Rockingham Dragway the weekend of June14-15. Despite being The 20th Anniversary Smoke Out, this event is ALWAYS epic. If you have never been to this event, my advice is to make sure it is on your list of events to attend this year. You can learn more at:SmokeOutRally.com, but nothing on the internet even comes close to BEING THERE ! There are LOTS of events in the Carolinas to participate in and enjoy this month. Check out The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar in print or online at: /FullThrottleMagazine.com/Cruisin-Calendar. Motorcycling presents many challenges that laws cannot mitigate. So, Ride smart because we want to see you again in July.

16th Annual NC Triangle Ride For Kids By: Neoma Disney he first Sunday in May always means the NC Triangle Ride For Kids. Hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts join together to raise funds for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, with the culmination of the efforts being a celebration of the Stars - the children who are living with or have survived a pediatric brain tumor. This 16th Annual NC Triangle Ride For Kids marked the first Ride For Kids event at the Chatham County Agriculture and Conference Center. What a terrific venue! The escorted ride route also was different this year. However, the highlight was still the circle around the courthouse in downtown Pittsboro. Everyone gets to waive at each other, and the townspeople come out to cheer the riders on. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, the Cary PD Motorcycle Unit along with Pittsboro Fire and Rescue again did a marvelous job escorting and blocking traffic. These officers and first responders show up every year and the event means a lot to them. Many of the motorcycle riders were wearing their 15 Year Ride For Kids patch that they were awarded last year for all of their years of participation. After the ride, everyone gets to enjoy lunch and hear from the children, like Dylan, Ridge, Jamilyn, Shango and Jessica, to find out what they have been up to in the past year.

Cleveland County CBA Autism Awareness Poker Run
By Wally Wersching n Saturday, May 4th, The Cleveland County CBA held their Autism Awareness Poker Run at VFW Post #4066 in Shelby, NC. They rode in a group to the following locations before coming back to the VFW hall for food and festivities. Metrolina Power Sports in Kings Mountain; the 238 Grill in Gastonia;– The CCIB Clubhouse in Shelby; 4th stop – the Windjammers Clubhouse in Shelby; and the final stop was back at the VFW hall. They had nice black Autism Awareness T-Shirts, a 50/50 drawing, and a silent auction. The weather on Saturday was uncertain with rain all around Shelby, so the turnout wasn’t as many as it would have been on a sunny clear day. I arrived at about 9:30AM with the 1st bike out at 10:00AM. I stopped in the VFW to say hello to everybody and saw all the stuff that was up for the silent auction. There was quite a lot of interesting stuff like oil changes, an air compressor, tools, a bird house, lottery tickets, etc. and a very unique coffee table with the US flag on the top. It was custom made by a very talented woodworker. If I had room in my house for it, I would have bid on it. It was beautiful! Bikers were continuously riding in and registering. The feeling was a very festive one. Everybody was looking forward to a very pleasant afternoon. For the registration fee of only $15 you couldn’t go wrong. You got to ride around the Carolina

countryside with friends making stops at friendly places, then come back to eat, and maybe even win with the best poker hand. Poker runs are always a lot of fun. Clint and Haley were there making sure that everything went according to plan. They really work hard to make the Cleveland County CBA/ABATE the best it can be. The bikes were lining up outside by the exit to the parking lot. A couple police cars were there to lead the way until the group got to Rte. 74 on their way to Metrolina Power Sports. As 10:00AM approached, the bikers went to their bikes and got ready to roll. First there was the prayer to ask God to watch over all the riders and then the road captain gave out some useful information. That’s the way it usually is for a group ride so that everybody knows what is going on along with what is expected of them. It makes for a safer ride. I watched them leave, and then went home. Later it rained, and I hope that they missed it. I’ll watch The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar and the Cleveland County CBA Facebook page for future events.

The Never Forget 9-11 Foundations “Back the K9” campaign focuses on our K9 Heroes. The foundation wants to protect our K9 Heroes who protect & serve our communities. Through fundraising and sponsorships they provide the K9 units with ballistic vests, Buddy Bags and the Hot-N-Pop k9 lifesaving alarm system. The Bull City H.O.G.’s (Chapter 4040), sponsored by Raging Bull H-D, planned and led the 50 plus mile ride around Falls Lake. At the halfway point, the ride stopped in Bahama for lunch. “We had awesome sponsors” said Chrysti. “Drye’s Gun Shop provided us with space and the lunch was contributed at cost by Fat Sally’s BBQ”. Chrysti picked up the cost of the lunch herself. In all 22 bikes and 25 riders raised enough money to buy 4 Baddy Bags for the Durham Police and Sheriff’s departments K9 units.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Bike Night
By: Mark Infield he Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine bike night was conceived as a no cause, no cost evening to simply get together and enjoy motorcycles and the people who ride them. We invited several vendors to share the evening of Tuesday, May 14th with us and our guests at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine HQ at 711 W. Main Street in Jamestown. Some were not able to attend due to the fact that they were at the Myrtle Beach Spring Rally, (maybe next time)? But Rebel Spirit (https://therebelspirit.bigcartel.com/) from Thomasville, North Carolina, had some custom motorcycle parts (handlebars, intakes and sissy bars)that they make on display Robert Causey from NC CBA/ABATE(www.cba-abatenc. org/)passed out bumper stickers, calendars and literature about the importance of being proactive about legislation that affect NC bikers, They signed up two new members who will help strengthen our voice in Raleigh.

25th Anniversary Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America By: Ginny Talley Photos by Kevin Kane Photography his year, former NASCAR driver and NBC Sports racing analyst, Kyle Petty, celebrated the 25th Anniversary Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America by leading the longest route in the ride’s history. Traveling a true corner-to-corner route across the United States, the ride started in Seattle, Washington, on Friday, May 3, and ended in Key Largo, Florida, on Saturday, May 11. On this milestone anniversary route, Petty led 250 participants, including more than 30 new riders, through 11 states in just nine days. On its longest route ever, the ride traveled nearly 3,700 miles to raise funds and awareness for Victory Junction – a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. Riding from Washington to Florida, this year’s trek offered a variety of incredible scenic views. From the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the red rock terrain in Utah, to the Colorado hot springs and Rocky Mountains, to the North Central Plains of Texas and the Louisiana bayou, and then the Everglades and sunny Florida beaches, Petty believes the 25th Anniversary Ride was the ride of a lifetime. Each day of the ride had a different sponsor, including North Carolina’s own Tilley Harley-Davidson. The founder of Tilley
T
Harley-Davidson, the late Don Tilley, was also a founding member of the Ride and became known as “Rand McNally” due to the fact that he planned the Ride’s route for 20 years. After he passed, his daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Terry LeVan, have continued to represent the Tilley family on the Ride as well as continue Tilley Harley-Davidson’s support. This includes providing police motorcycles for the Ride’s motor marshals and shipping bikes to the Ride’s starting point each year. “Corner to corner … Wow what a ride,” Terry LeVan said. “We rode in pouring rain, high winds and barely missed torna-

does. It was at times challenging for sure, but it was nothing compared to what these kids face every day. ”That’s why we ride. We ride so these awesome kids can go to camp and enjoy some things they normally don’t get to experience. What a great ride, with great people, and all for a great cause! Tilley Harley-Davidson is so proud to be involved with this ride and will always continue our support.” Because of the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America, 8,185 children have attended Victory Junction at no cost to their families. Last year alone, the Ride raised $1.3 million and sent 100 children to Camp. Located in Randleman, North Carolina, Victory Junction has served as the Ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by Petty and his family in honor of his late son, Adam in 2004. “Because of our sponsors, fans and the people who participate in this Ride, whether they’re veteran participants or first-timers, so many deserving kids get to have the time of their life at Victory Junction each year,” said Petty. Aside from touring the country, the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America, hosted fan events at their pit stops along the way. At each stop, fans were encouraged to come out to see the sight of 150 motorcycles riding for the cause, meet celebrity riders, purchase merchandise and make donations. Among the celebrities who participated in this year’s Charity Ride Across America were NASCAR Hall of Famer and seventime champion Richard Petty; NASCAR legends Harry Gant, Hershel McGriff and Donnie Allison; current NASCAR driver David Ragan; former Formula 1, Champ Car and NASCAR driver Max Papis; former NFL great and Heisman Trophy winner (1982) Herschel Walker; Heisman Trophy winner (1980) and Super Bowl champion (XXII) George Rogers; and NBC Sports NASCAR personalities Krista Voda, Rutledge Wood, and Rick Allen. 5th Annual Gathering of the Tribes By David Burnette Well, the 5th annual Gathering of the Tribes was definitely one to remember. It was supposed to be a 3-day event starting Friday afternoon at the Spartanburg Harley-Davidson shop, but God and Mother Nature had other plans. Friday afternoon due to extremely heavy rains; I mean torrential rains, it got pushed off to Saturday instead. Saturday morning things started off with a Veterans Memorial Tribute presented by Bill “SQUID”. The stage was all set up and ready to rock but those plans quickly changed due to more heavy rains and everything had to be taken down and moved around front of the Harley shop under the canopy. Thank God the canopy was pretty wide and ran the whole length of the building, otherwise it would have been a disaster. I was talking to John Grice with Bikers Against Hunger, who is also the coordinator for the event, and he was telling me that some riders were there that rode through cold freezing rain all the way from New Jersey, Iowa, and Virginia just to be there! Needless to say, things were a little slow getting started but, Preacher Steve Ervin from His Laboring Few Motorcycle Ministry got up and started preaching. Everybody knew it was on then, Ev-
eryone just came and huddled under the awning to stay warm and dry and enjoyed the day. Some of the other speakers were preacher Cotton of Frontline Biker Church and Pastor Jim Rutledge of Church Builders just to mention a couple. There were several bands that came out and played some

awesome praise and worship. There was Michael and Dana Francis of Lion of Pride ministry, Scrape Wall, former National President of Patriot Guard MC from Michigan, Ekklesia, and others. Mike Grubb, National President of the Hell Fighters Motorcycle Ministry, was on hand to emcee the event. In spite of the cold rain, there was still a bike show with $1000 prize and trophy that went to the road captain for the Kingdom Riders Motorcycle Ministry, (sorry I can’t find the paper I wrote his name on) Ms. Pat with His Laboring Few Motorcycle Ministry won the trophy for second place. There was also a tattoo contest and tons of door prizes were given away. The free food and door prizes were donated by Bikers Against Hunger which is a feeding ministry that helps feed the poor all over the country. If you would like to help, I’m sure it would be appreciated. Mark Ward of Metrolina Motorsports was there selling raffle tickets on the Big Wheel Bagger they’re giving away in November of this year. Proceeds from the bike raffle go to benefit Purple Heart Homes(purplehearthomesusa.org) For tickets contact Mark @ 704-259-6204. Be on the lookout for upcoming Gatherings around the country like Decatur, Texas August. 24 & 25, Topeka, Kansas September. 21, Las Vegas, NV September 14, and Los Angeles, California October 19. Rolling Saints Hearts And Hope Poker Run By: Jeff Coffey Photo by Alan Dockery he morning of April 20 started a little cloudy and cool, but bikers rolled in for the start of the 1stAnnual Hearts and Hope Poker Run hosted by the Rolling Saints RC, from Granite Falls, NC. The ride was held in memory of Greyson Ray Chamberlain. The poker run went great. Even with rain, we ended up with 131 riders and others who stopped by to donate. I don’t remember who won the best and worst hands, but thank you for donating back to Hearts and Hope. We gave out around 80 door prizes ranging from gift cards to a guitar and lessons and a muzzle loader rifle. The Rolling Saints RC was introduced to Hearts and Hope by a member of our club after he contacted them to help two of our members who had just had a baby with heart problems. Richie and Sandra are original club members who had a very tough year with the birth and loss of baby Greyson. They helped them out with some very great donations and support. So as a club we wanted to get to know more about them and got together. We knew we wanted to be able to help Hearts and Hope because everything they do is just fantastic. They didn’t know we were going to do that when we called them to the stage for the presentation to Hearts and Hope. Thanks to everyone who helped and attended the ride, The Rolling Saints were able to present Hearts and Hope with $3,452. “There just don’t seem to be enough words to express our immense gratitude to the Rolling Saints for this right here,” stated Hearts and Hope. “Such compassion, generosity and so much love despite the cold and rainy day. D&Q Motorsports 15th Anniversary Party ell, hello brothers and sisters!
Johnny Reb coming at y’all with a break-down of my favorite event of the year. D&Q Motorsports is to me one of the last of the old skool bike shops. It’s no friggin boutique for motor clothes, or shiny bobbles for weekend warriors to be the shiniest on the subdivision block. No, my friends. This is the real damn deal. Jeff and his crew have turned out some of the most beautiful choppers to hit the roads of North Carolina. I love going to this shop and talking bikes or hot rods or whatever hits us. These guys are class. Alright, now that you know what kind of shop this is, let me tell you about their 15th Anniversary Party. Jeff told me a couple months ago that this was gonna be a blow out, and he did not lie. Everything thing was free as soon as you rolled in, on your scoot preferably. Anyway, me and Sassy hopped off our scoot and walked out front and was digging the band,
(who we will get back to shortly), when the smell of BBQ came drifting our way. Well, Jeff said Eggy, his brother, was going to be running the BBQ show that day. Brother, that was some great tasting BBQ! Me and Sassy went in the shop and got our plates, BBQ, taters, and some great tasting coleslaw. got our plates and sat down. We got to listen to one of the best bands I have heard in a looonnggg time! “Among the Machines” was the first of three bands slated to play that day. Do I need to remind y’all this was free? These four guys were strong, dig it? STRONG! You may not like their style of music, in all honesty, Sassy, she no likey. However, yours truly was really digging it. Strong vocals from Tom Scott, was really hitting hard. Scott Wagstaff was the driving force with some really great Bass that kept the beat and driving that unbelievable speed. With Cameron Scott keeping those drums running with the bass, and Drew Saunders on lead guitar, everything came together. Whether you like this style of hard driving rock or not, no problem. You have got to appreciate the talent that this band has. Sorry folks, but that music was kick ass, and I can’t say enough about a band that I dig.
Alright. Moving on, if you were one of the first 200 to arrive, you got a very cool D&Q Anniversary T-shirt. Jeff really pulled out all the stops and I think everyone really enjoyed themselves. Now Sassy and I had to leave. I know it sucked, but we had to ride to the Outer Banks to hook up with some brothers that day. I wished we could have hung out longer and watched the other bands that played. After Among the Machines was “Wishbone”, and “Death Cadence”. I hope to hear y’all in

the future and give you a shout out in one of my next articles. We were looking at a 400 mile ride to the Outer Banks, and as y’all know, Ol’ Johnny Reb ain’t as young as he used to be! We had to boogie after a couple of hours, so I just want to apologize to you all, and Jeff and the staff of D&Q Motorsports. I wish I could have stayed longer. So I’m gonna close this out with this, if you haven’t realized by now, I hold Jeff and his crew in very high regard. Check out their website, or look them up on Facebook. Just find them for quality work on your scoot, or go all out and talk to the guys about that dream chop, or build you have been dreaming about. Whatever you decide you will not be disappointed. I put my name on that brother. You can learn more about D&Q Motorsports by visiting dandqmotorsports.com. Or better yet, when you are out and about, visit D&Q Motorsports at 34 Ray Hart Lane, in Angier, NC 27501or call (919) 639-5511 And tell them that you read about their 15th Anniversary party in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Johnny Reb Out

Deathwish Motor Culture 3rd Annual Bike & Stunt Show By: Buzz
T
here are priorities in this world, and when there
is a Deathwish event, the priority is: Get there, and get ready to have a good time. Deathwish Motor Culture based out of Cameron, NC carries a nationwide following of its killer apparel line and stunt shows but consists of a whole lot more than you see on the surface. On May 11th they held their 3rd annual bike and stunt show, and after hanging with them on a few other occasions, I knew this was an event that I didn’t want to miss. We knew they would put on a hell of a party no matter what, because last year they carried a big crowd in the rain. This year, there were multiple storms running around the state, but at the Wing Co, it was sunny, dry and there was a string of bikes parked out the side of the building by the patio. Did I mention it was hot? No worries, Beth and Britney were slinging drinks and keeping the dust down. The Wing Co. carries an awesome menu, full ABC permits and good selection of beers on tap. The party on the patio was getting at it and the DJ was keeping our ears full. While Joie, Bambi, Drew and a couple others
held down the DW merch tent and sold 50/50 tickets by the stretch! It wasn’t long before Jeremy, Cody, Dustin and Joe of the Deathwish Stunt Crew cleared the lanes to rip some wheelies and have a little fun. Wheelie after wheelie came rolling down the way while the crowd shot pics and cheered them on. Once the burnouts started the whole area was smoked out, and they finished off lined up on the curb with all four bikes burning down. Fun side note, these guys once had the fire department called on them during a burnout contest cause a cager riding by saw so much smoke that they thought the building was on fire! The Crew parked their bikes and the lane filled back up with bikes for the Bike Show. Sweet plaques, made by the talented Colley Woodworks were handed out for Best Bobber, Best Metric, Best Softail, Best Dyna/FXR, Best Bagger and Best In Show! The Best in Show was determined by people’s choice voting and Kristen from The Rebel Spirit took home the honors along with a $75 gift certificate from Hot Rod Tattoos in Sanford, $45 cash and a bike feature in the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Make sure to check the upcoming issues for a good look at her awesome ’96 Honda Shadow Custom Bobber. Joie and her team had been selling stretches of tickets all day long and there was a pile of goodies from Deathwish Motor Culture, Lowbrow Customs, The Rebel Spirit, Cooley Woodworks, Cody Roundtree Custom Paint, Hotrod Tattoo and more. They pulled tickets for at least 30 minutes giving away door prizes. After a while the door prizes wound down, but the party did not. We did eventually get a rain shower, but it didn’t take anything away from the day. I wanna personally thank Jeremy, Joie and the rest of the Deathwish Crew and friends and the Wing Co., for another great time. This is a good group of folks who know how to put it down and take care of their community at the same time. This year’s event

Harley-Davidson LiveWire™ The Future Is Now
I can keep up, and the old standards are becoming just that;old. Naturally, I prefer the old standard, I like the smell of exhaust and the combustion engine is all I have ever known. Now in all corners of the world and industry, the push for progress has lead us to electric lawn equipment, cars and even our beloved motorcycles. Harley-Davidson is also looking to the future and has leaked their plans for a whole line of new products, including electric bicycles and their first electric motorcycle; the Livewire. the Livewire is Certainly not the first production electric motorcycle, but it will be The Motor Company’s first real swing at the market. They have been testing the waters for years and took “Project LiveWire” to dealerships across the country in 2014 to get feedback on the then Livewire prototype bike. I am, like I said, in the “old school” camp and my natural first reaction was that of opposition. A few years have passed and while I’m still in love with my Twin Cam 88 and other gas powered motorcycles, the idea that there will be electric motorcycles has become a reality. I have heard both enthusiasm and apathy in respect to the oncoming technology. Mostly the negative reactions reach my desk, because, well; bad news he world is changing faster than

travels faster. The main negativity that I hear is about price, riding range and styling of the Harley-Davidson Livewire. I’m not writing this article to try to sway anyone’s opinion, but answers to these opinions have been brought to my attention through conversation, and other research. Harley-Davidson is reaching out to the urban commuter with the LiveWire. Those of us who like to go out and ride 300+ miles a day, don’t sell your bike for the LiveWire just yet. It would be a good fit though as additional bike for your daily commute or for shorter journeys. The LiveWire™ motorcycle features a high-voltage battery (or RESS; Rechargeable Energy Storage System) composed of lithium-ion cells surrounded by a finned, cast-aluminum housing. The highvoltage battery provides 140 miles of city range or 88 miles of combined stop-and-go and highway range.* Naturally the riding range depends on a riding habits, weather and equipment conditions. If you are drag racing from light to light and jamming on the throttle, you may experience a shorter mileage range. Speaking of speed, the LiveWire can go 0-60 in 3 seconds with instantaneous power! No clutch to release, no gears to run through, just grab and go! If you do find yourself pushing the range limits you have some options to recharge the livewire. A simple google search turned up multiple websites and apps that will help you find charging stations. North and South Carolina are peppered with charging stations, honestly, I was amazed at how many there were in the Carolinas. You may need to make sure to plan your time or mileage since charging stations aren’t on every corner...yet. The Livewire gives you two easy ways to charge: Use the onboard Level 1 charger and power cord to connect to any standard household outlet and get a full charge overnight. For a faster charge, visit any public Level 3 DC Fast Charge station for 80% charge in 40 minutes or 100% charge in an

chelin Scorcher® tires designed exclusively to enhance the ride and handling performance of the LiveWire. The multiple charging capabilities that come as a standard feature, listed earlier in this article, also give an advantage to the LiveWire in comparison to other EV bikes. In comparison to other electric motorcycles, the LiveWire is priced higher, but for these reasons (and more) is not over priced. Naturally, I am just scraping the surface of this new technology and I strongly urge you to go check the livewire out in person. Harley-Davidson is not only joining the race in the EV market, they kicked the door in! They are scheduled to hit the market in August 2019 but only select dealers will receive them. In NC, Riding High HarleyDavidson in High Point and Ft. Bragg Harley-Davidson in Fayetteville are scheduled to receive the LiveWire. Wether you are a fan or not, I think the Harley-Davidson LiveWire is a bike to take notice of. Stop by one of these dealerships (in August 2019) and take a look for yourself. *https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/en/motorcycles/ future-vehicles/livewire.html CAR HAULERS

hour.* Honestly, I find it easy to blow 40 minutes to an hour in the local dealership, restaurant, or park that you may find yourself at when you need of a recharge. Again, a little planning will go a long way if you are planning to stretch your riding radius on the LiveWire. Even at the 88 mile combined stop-and-go highway range offered up on the liveWire, you can easily ride to work, hit a couple errands ,and get home and recharge over night on a household outlet. The Livewire comes with a $29,799 starting price, which I have heard a lot about. While the LiveWire is more expensive than other electric motorcycles, there are reasons behind the price. The Harley-Davidson Motor Company has put a ton of R&D into the Livewire and it has a lot of cool features that other EV bikes don’t have. The LiveWire is equipped with Electronic Chassis Control System that manages cornering-enhanced Anti-Lock brakes, a Traction Control System and Drag-Torque Slip that work together to give the rider more control in less than ideal conditions and situations. Some of these features are also found on some other high end motorcycles. Yes, a lot of this stuff goes on behind the scenes and you don’t even notice that it’s going on, but it’s all geared towards making your ride better. The LiveWire’s information center has a few bells and whistles as well. Not only for the speedometer and navigation that has been a part of the H-D line up eccentuated in the Rushmore Project a few years ago, the Motor Company takes another step forward. The LiveWire features a 4.3” full color, liquidcrystal, touch screen display that is customizable with to add music, navigation, alert information and more. The LiveWire is the world’s most connected motorcycle experience. With cellular telematics connectivity powered by Panasonic®, you can connect remotely through your smart phone using the latest version of the Harley Davidson™ App. Check bike vitals like battery charge status, see its location on a map, and get security alerts if it’s been bumped, tampered with, or moved. *That’s some pretty cool stuff there. The overall fit and finish of the LiveWire is incredible. It is a tight, streamlined package and all though it steps away from the traditional styling of the Harley-Davidson legacy, it is geared toward the future and different types of riding, than the touring and long distance that we are all familiar with. Having that in mind, the LiveWire features a fully adjustable front and rear suspension in a extremely rigid lightweight frame made out of cast aluminum. The LiveWire features a permanent magnet electric motor that produces 100% of it’s rated torque instantly. They located the H-D Revelation™ Powertrain below the battery to lower the center of gravity for easier handling. LiveWire also comes equipped with 180mm rear and 120mm premium H-D/Mi-

11th Annual CVMA 15-5 Benefit Ride Story and photo by Evan Parton he first Saturday in May started out with some fog as the Ride Of Pride trucks rolled into town being escorted from the plant in Cleveland, NC, by Donny Bradley and myself. As the sun began to burn off the fog, the sounds of motorcycles arriving at Crossroads HarleyDavidson, in Wilkesboro, NC for the 11th Annual Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 15-5 Ride filled the air. Registration began to heat up as everyone was getting ready to ride to Mooresville, NC. The band got cranking and even had a guest vocalist., A special display was also set up for Ronald “Smiley” Wilson as this ride was dedicated to him. The announcement was made for all to gather around for the National Anthem, a ride briefing, and we were soon saddled up and ready to ride. The group ride was escorted through the back of roads of North Carolina by state and local law enforcement. We were welcomed to our destination: Shoals Grill. As

always, Michael Lipford, and Micha Dunlevy from Crossroads Harley-Davidson went all out again this year, to provide us with a great place to end this ride. One by one the bikes, welcomed by a huge American Flag for all to see rolled in. Lunch was served as the band began to rock it out. We were blessed with an accident free ride to accomplish what we set out to do. Eventually, rain arrived, and the bikes began to leave. The CVMA Annual Ride’s purpose is veterans helping veterans in need. In the past, they have donated to the Fisher House of NC, Purple Heart Homes, Veteran Restoration Quarters, Project Healing Waters, Project Patriot Hunt, Welcome Home Vets, and many others. If you are inclined to support any of these organizations, donations are welcome. To participate in future rides and events contact combatvets155@gmail.com.

Legislative Report As Of 5/7/19 By: Charlie Boone Cba Legislative Director t this point, there have been 4 bills introduced that we support. HB 144, The Hands Free NC Act, was introduced on 2/25/19 and has been passed by the House Transportation Comm. It passed Judiciary on Friday, 5/3/19. It passed Rules on 5/6/19, it passed on the House floor on 5/7/19. The vote was 89-26 in favor. It will now be sent to the Senate. This bill is a work in progress, and I suspect that changes will be made to it in Senate committees. There are still many steps to follow to have this bill passed, and some in the legislature feel that it takes away individual liberties. CBA has voted to support this bill. HB267 was introduced on 3/6/19 to allow Freedom of Choice concerning the mandatory use of helmets while riding a motorcycle. The bill, if passed, would allow anyone over the age of 21 to go helmetless as long as they have held a motorcycle endorsement for at least 12 months or have completed the approved motorcycle safety class. This bill passed the Transportation Comm. on 4/25. It did not pass the Health committee on 5/2/19. This bill is now dead and the issue cannot be considered again until the 2021 session. HB104/SB81 were introduced at our request on 2/20/19. These are companion bills that were to redefine the definition of litter to include yard waste. The term “yard waste” includes grass clippings, leaves, shrubbery trimmings, and any other plant material resulting from lawn maintenance and other horticultural gardening and landscaping activities. House bill was passed by the Com on State and Local Government and by Transportation. It is currently in Rules. The bill has now changed in that it does not change the definition of litter, but it makes it an offense to leave grass clippings on the paved area of a public street or highway. The Senate bill remains in the Rules Comm. and will probably stay there until they see what the House does with it. We hope that this bill will pass so that riders can take action when people blow grass into the road when mowing. The crossover date that this bill must meet is Thursday, 5/9/19. I was told this morning (5/7) that the House caucus has decided not to advance the bill. It seems that money has won out over lives. We will discuss our options and probably try again in 2021. Did you know that it is illegal to wear a mask that conceals your identity while on any highway in NC? Well, it is and HB257/S321 has been introduced that would exempt persons riding a motorcycle. The law originally was passed to address terroristic actions, but there have recently been tickets written to motorcyclists wearing face coverings to stay warm. This bill has passed the House on 3/27/19. The Senate bill has been heard in the Senate Judiciary committee. They accepted a Proposed Committee Substitute (PCS) which is almost the same language as the House bill, but not exactly. The Senate voted on this bill on 5/2/19 and passed it. Since there are very slight differences in the language in the two bills that passed,

Motorcycle Awareness Celebration With Bikers And Needy Children Foundation By: Chi
W
Jeanie Hood Carter The Bikers and Needy Children foundation (BANC), hosted this annual celebration for motorcycle awareness that took place at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson on Saturday, May 11, 2019. There were so many bikes out to support motorcycle awareness, it was certainly a wonderful day in May. The motorcycles were coming in and out of the parking lot all day. As always, the celebration was a hit. The BANC members and volunteers were in place and tending to their stations and they stayed busy with tickets and auction items. The ticket sales and raffle ticket tent was a busy place! There were plenty of winners! There was also a petition about the distracted driver laws to sign in the tent. The Bikers and Needy Children Foundation wants to stand up for the rights of motorcyclists. Bikers and Needy Children Foundation and their members are also dedicated to the cause of biker safety! They have done so much great work towards motorcycle awareness. The motorcycle awareness signs were displayed at the tent as well. BANC was able to secure the first of these ith contributions from
signs a year or so back. In fact, the first motorcycle awareness signs in Fayetteville were right down the street, just a few hundred feet from our location at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson. make it happen somewhere near you. Bikers and Needy Children Foundation (BANC) is a certified non-profit organization; that, in itself, says a lot about their dedication and determination. BANC foundation is especially thankful to so many. It certainly takes a lot of hands to continue their efforts each and every year. I have seen many great and honorable causes over the years. So, when I hear of something, I always try to make sure I can at least attend and celebrate with them. It always feels like a family reunion when everyone gets together in one location. The BANC foundation wanted to give a special “Thanks” Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson for cohosting and for providing the grill and food.as well. A special thank you to Bullet Underwood (for working even with a hurt back), Barry, JR, Darian, Shawna, and Stacy, and the wonderful BANC volunteers for working the event. Also, a huge thank you to James Laru, “Jimmy”, and Kim for making and donating our very special Motorcycle Awareness Ribbon Trophies. They are fabulous! Thank you to Ashley and the group from Biker Lives Matter/Rabbit, the NC Motorcycle Safety Group, and The Blue Knights for setting up, and as always, Chi Force Photography.

The First Annual Bull City Motorcycle Rally By: Ed Cleary
T
Bull City Motorcycle Rally, sponsored by Raging Bull Harley-Davidson, took place in downtown Durham over the weekend of April 13th and 14th. Despite Mother Nature’s best efforts to rain it out, and the tragic gas leak explosion just days prior, the event was a resounding success. Like all rally’s there were many merchandise vendors selling everything from patches and accessories to food and drink. Many of the local businesses in the area also got into the spirit and offered sales and specials. One of the highlights of the rally was the Bull City H.O.G.’s annual bike show. Hank Thilbodeau, owner of Widowmaker Custom Design & Repair in Rougemont, took the Best in Show award for his stunning “Hazy Thoughts” creation. Hank graciously donated his winnings back to the event charities. The H.O.G. bike show was sponsored by Bob Karney and the Karney Law Firm. Unbeknownst to the casual attendee is the months of work, planning and money that is required to make an event like this happen. In addition to all the city permitting fees, local business owners who might be affected by the street closures also had to sign off on the event. Little things that we take for he first annual
granted also had to be addressed. Volunteers from the dealership and the Bull City H.O.G. chapter had to be crowd control certified. Barricades, portable rest room facilities, EMS and other first responders had to be arranged. Then there was the entertainment. Two days of live music required the rental of a portable stage, generators, PA system, and the skilled worker to attend to them. And despite the best planning there are the unforeseen circumstances that must be dealt with. On April 10th, 2019, a gas explosion occurred less than a block away from the rally site at the 115 block of North Duke Street in the Brightleaf District. The blast destroyed several buildings and damaged dozens of others, killing two persons and injuring 25 others, including 9 firefighters. City officials have cited a gas leak to be the cause of the blast. Rally organizers quickly shifted the focus of the event from charity fund raiser to “day of healing” for the city. Moneys raised during the weekend were divided between the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and the charitable entities connected to the Durham gas explosion recovery efforts. Ed Compton, the General Manager of Raging Bull summarized the weekend with the following statement; “The various vendors made the rally a family-friendly event. The bands were amazing. The area business teams were friendly, vibrant and offered great service. The positive feedback we have received from everyone afterward motivates us to organize and host the Bull City Bike Rally again next year. Vendors, attendees, local businesses, and City of Durham Team Members graciously offered some great takeaway ideas to help make it an even bigger and better event next year.” Ed also expressed special kudos to the key sponsors and/ or contributors: City of Durham, Brightleaf Square, Discover Durham, The Cloud Brewery, Mavericks BBQ, Devine’s Sports Bar, James Joyce Irish Pub, Federal, Other End of the Leash, Solis Apartments, Social Games and Brews, Skewers, Shooters Bar, Bob Karney – The Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer, the Bull City HOG Chapter, the many vendors from various parts of the country, and the Raging Bull Harley-Davidson Team.

Southern Gentlemen MC Celebrates 50 Years Story and photo by Alan Dockery Fifty years is a long time for any group to survive. The Southern Gentlemen MC, of Gaston County, NC, recently celebrated that goal and is stronger than ever. Despite off and on rain, lots of folks showed up at the very cool clubhouse for the 50th Anniversary Party. Several founding members were there. Some long-time members brought old photos of rides from the 1970’s. Oh Man the stories of biker adventures and BS from years ago were flowing around the tables. Lots of great food and drink started the party off. Soon the band was crankin’ it up in the outside bar. I met some Southern Gentlemen the first summer I was back to North Carolina camping in the mountains on the creek. They were always ready to tell stories of military service and riding motorcycles. And had a friendly hug and cold beer. For 50 years they have been some good guys to hang out with at the Harley drags or twice a year at the Creekside Bike
Rally which the Southern Gentlemen host and open to the public. I wish them fifty more years of riding and brotherhood. As the brothers say, “We’ve always played by our own rules and we are still doing it today.”

Road Guards Service For Rides Story by Alan Dockery Summer means lots of poker runs and rides and rallies across the Carolinas. Sometimes we do something that seems smart to us but ain’t always legal. I’m talking about stopping traffic to let a line of motorcycles go through an intersection. Yes, we know that is the safest way to handle the situation. Donny Bradley, owner of DOC Bail Bonding in Statesville, NC, is working to improve this. Donny has started a Professional Road Guard service. Trained groups of riders, recognized by law enforcement and available to assist any group with traffic control on their rides, are forming. “Eventually, we want to pass laws making it a trainable certificate for NC Road Guards and have it clearly defined what motorcyclists can do to protect a group on the road,” Donny said. “Our goal is to have teams working with all the law enforcement organizations across the state to assist in the safe movement of motorcycle processions for groups to raise money and for fallen soldiers last rights.” I’ve seen them in action. Their road guards can assist a Sheriff’s Deputy at a major intersection to ensure traffic in all directions avoids crashes with the motorcyclists. “We are working with Tribute to the Troops for support in helping other riding groups and law enforcement organizations across the state,” Donny said. “We hope to have the program statewide in five years. We offer training for everyone who wants to join our group. Potential road guards need a minimum of five years of riding experience. Passengers need to have years of experience and will go through all training with the rider. We are reaching out to experienced riders to get team leaders across the state to help in our vision. ” “Our goal is to help other groups to ensure they have a safe ride while on their charity events. Let them focus on the ride and we’ll focus on getting them to their destination safely. We welcome all riders who want to learn about being professional road guards and helping other riders.” “We will not escort rides when alcohol is involved, and all road guards will be required to have no alcohol eight hours before they twist the throttle. Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Awareness Month Of May By: Chi One thing is certain, there is always something planned at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson! May was a great month in review. There were numerous events focusing on Motorcycle Awareness Month. Every weekend was packed with events, charities and celebrations. The beginning of the month was celebrated as the kick off to motorcycle awareness month as well as the winner of this year’s 2019 Harley-Davidson 883 Iron. The reverse drawing was certainly one of the big days and the house was packed. Everyone was eagerly waiting for the winner to be announced. Congratulations! Christopher Harris! Mr. Harris was, of course, very happy with the outcome and many people were there to congratulate him on his big win! In addition to all these bikers celebrating the month of May, there were also a variety of sales focused on Mother’s Day.
The store had promotions that awarded special designated items for mothers of all ages. Everyone was able to get their Mother’s Day shopping in and completed. Whether you were buying a gift for yourself or your mother, an associate was there to assist you! I was also able to witness the sales associates and their surprise Mother’s Day gifts. They were all happy to be recognized. These ladies also took an extra few minutes to pose for a few Mommies’ Day photos…. Beautiful!
If you were not able to attend these festivities and see some of these great celebrations, don’t be discouraged; there will be plenty for you to take part in this June. I will look forward to seeing you all!

can come with me to my house and I’ll feed you,” the lawyer said. “But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree.” “Bring them along,” the lawyer replied. Turning to the other poor man he stated, “You may come with us, also.” The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, “But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me and I live on a mountain!” “Bring them all as well,” the lawyer answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was. Once under way, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, “Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.” The lawyer replied, “Glad to do it. You’ll really love my place. The grass is almost a foot high.”
a measurement, announced, “Twenty-one feet, six inches,” and walked away. One engineer shook his head and laughed, “A lot of good that does us. We ask for the height and she gives us the length!” Two Mexicans are riding a bicycle on a road about 15 miles outside of Lafayette, LA. One of the bike’s tires goes flat and they start hitching a lift back into town. A friendly trucker stops to see if he can help and the Mexicans ask him for a ride. He tells them they can ride in the trailer if they could fit in with 20,000 bowling balls he is hauling. They manage to squeeze themselves and their bike into the back and the driver shuts the doors and gets on his way. Wanting to make up time the trucker speeds up. Sure enough a blonde cop pulls him over for speeding. The officer asks the driver what he is carrying, to which the driver jokingly replies “Mexican eggs.” The blond lady cop obviously doesn’t believe this so she takes a look in the trailer. She opens the back door and shocked, quickly shuts it and locks it. She calls for immediate backup from headquarters, the Border Patrol and the Swat Team. The dispatcher asks what emergency she has that requires so many officers. “I stopped a tractor-trailer with 20,000 Mexican eggs in it. Two have hatched and they’ve already stolen a bicycle.”

Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 93, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. “You have been to France before, monsieur?” the customs officer asked sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously. “Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.” The American said, “The last time I was here, I didn’t have to show it.” “Impossible. Americans always have to show their passports on arrival in France!” The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then, he quietly explained, ‘’Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn’t find a single Frenchman to show a passport to.” You could have heard a pin drop. A biker joined the priesthood. He was nervous about hearing confessions, so he asks the older priest to sit in on his confessions. The new priest hears a couple of confessions, and then the old priest asks him to step out of the confessional for a few suggestions. The old priest suggests, “Cross your arms over your chest, and rub your chin with one hand and try saying things like ‘yes, go on’ and ‘ I understand.’” The new priest crosses his arms, rubs his chin with one hand and repeats all the suggested remarks to the old priest. The old priest says, “Now, don’t you think that’s a little better than slapping your knee and saying ‘No s**t, what happened next’?”
One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the road-side eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. He asked one man, “Why are you eating grass?” “We don’t have any money for food,” the poor man replied. “We have to eat grass.” “Well, then, you
A woman from Los Angeles, who was a tree hugger, a liberal Democrat, and an antihunter, purchased a piece of timberland near Colville, WA. There was a large tree on one of the highest points in the tract. She wanted a good view of the natural splendor of her land so she started to climb the big tree. As she neared the top she encountered a spotted owl that attacked her. In her haste to escape, the woman slid down the tree to the ground and got many splinters in her crotch. In considerable pain, she hurried to a local ER to see a doctor. She told him she was an environmentalist, a democrat, and an anti-hunter and how she came to get all the splinters. The doctor listened to her story with great patience and then told her to go wait in the examining room and he would see if he could help her. She sat and waited three hours before the doctor reappeared. The angry woman demanded, “What took you so long?” He smiled and then told her, “Well, I had to get permits from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management before I could remove old-growth timber from a “recreational area” so close to a waste treatment facility. I’m sorry, but due to Obama-Care...they turned you down.” Two engineers were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking at its top. A woman walked by and asked what they were doing. “We’re supposed to find the height of this flagpole,” said Sven, “but we don’t have a ladder.” The woman took a wrench from her purse, loosened a couple of bolts, and laid the pole down on the ground. Then she took a tape measure from her pocketbook, took
Two nuns were shopping at a 7-Eleven store. As they passed by the beer cooler, one nun said to the other, “Wouldn’t a nice cold beer or two taste wonderful on a hot summer evening?” The second nun answered, “Indeed it would, sister, but I would not feel comfortable buying beer, since I am certain it would cause a scene at the checkout counter.” “I can handle that without a problem,” the other nun replied, and she picked up a six-pack and headed for the checkout. The cashier had a surprised look on his face when the two nuns arrived with a six-pack of beer. “We use beer for washing our hair,” the nun said. “Back at the convent, we call it ‘Catholic shampoo.’ ” Without blinking an eye, the cashier reached under the counter, pulled out a package of pretzel sticks, and placed them in the bag with the beer. He then looked the nun straight in the eye, smiled, and said: “The curlers are on the house.”

The Congregation Vintage Chopper And Hot Rod Show By Buzz
J
ust in sight of the downtown skyscrapers of
Charlotte, North Carolina lies one of the treasures of the south eastern motorcycle culture; “The Congregation”. This gathering of old school choppers, vintage cars and the people who love them, is put on by the fine folks at Prism Supply Co. and Dice Magazine and is not to be missed. They hold this epic history lesson at Camp North End in a century old building that used to be a Model T Ford plant. The building itself throws a lot of atti-
tude on the show with its old wooden factory floor and near floor to ceiling windows that really works with all the vintage machinery. April 13th was a real crappy day with storms all across the state, but I still saw a lot of brave souls ride in. Once inside the building, the first thing I noticed was that the size of the show nearly tripled from the previous year, meaning there was a ton more bikes for all of us to drool over. The second thing I noticed was this awesome Shovel Head
chopper with a springer front end and an awesome king and queen seat and multi light sissy bar and the rest of the afternoon was a blur. We went from bike to bike with our jaws nearly dragging on the ground. There were Pans, Knuckles, Flatty’s and Shovels,
to the right and left. Most were choppers and hand builds but there were a few survivors mixed in, too. The warehouse was lined with vendors and even some tattoo booths near the center of the floor. I ran into a couple old friends and, when I stepped outside for a breather, the rain had stopped and the lot outside was almost as interesting as the bike show itself. We went back inside and made a few more rounds to make sure we didn’t miss anything before we left. “The Congregation” had proven again this year to be one of the best bike shows we had been to in a long time. I feel really fortunate to have such a great show right in our back yard and can’t wait to get back to “The Congregation” next year.

Who Wants Changes? Bros and Bro-ettes Here we are at the beginning of summer. We have a tendency to sit back and watch things change before our eyes, and wonder where has the time gone? Some people don’t like or think about the way things change. One thing that hasn’t changed no matter what happens or how fast time goes by and that’s Jesus Christ. He’s the same today, tomorrow, just like last year. He still died on the Cross for my sins and yours and took it all away. He’s the same One that created the world yesterday. If you’re in doubt about it, read the Bible. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Sometimes we want to change ourselves when we see people doing things we can’t. That’s the same when we hear people singing and praying, even speaking, we’ll say wish I could do like them. However, We need to be happy for the way the Lord made us, He made us all different. Hebrews 13:5reads, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Just remember we Christians are being watched more than sinners are. None of us are perfect we all
sin daily. Jesus is coming back. Are you ready? Just remember, times are changing fast and we all need to be ready. All you have to do is ask Him into your heart and live for Him. Revelation 1:8 I- I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, says the Lord. Who is and will come again. In His Wind Ms. Pat

The Gathering 81 Team Fayetteville By: Chi
H
Angels MC Fayetteville, NC hosted the “Gathering” on Saturday, April 27, 2019. This ride was to benefit the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and to promote motorcycle awareness and unity. The day was a great success and so many clubs were present. This event happens each year and a charitable organization such as the Shriner’s are selected to do great things with the proceeds of the ride. This “Gathering” brought many motorcycles that were represented by numerous clubs. The Hells Angels MC, Fayetteville NC were very pleased with the partnership with Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. The Shriners’ took such an active part and actually led the ride. This partnership seems to be a perfect match with a hopeful outlook towards continued success and grand gains for the future. The “Gathering” took place at the Last Call Sports Bar and the entire area was filled with motorcyclists. and motorcycles. With the date marking the upcoming Motorcycle Awareness Month of May, everyone focused on safety and awareness for all clubs in and around the Fayetteville area. We were all in place and ready to kick off the riding season in the most perfect and pleasing way; riding! The bike show began at noon, the ride took off at 1:00 p.m. and the clubs returned to the Last Call Sports Bar around 3:00 p.m. Everyone ate and socialized there at the bar. There was a safe and friendly atmosphere to promote all clubs present and what we all enjoy doing; riding our motorcycles! The ride around the Fayetteville area was amazing. Once while the “Gathering” was rumbling down Owen Hill Road, as far as the eye could see, there was a roaring river of motorcycles! All you could hear was engines and all you could see was chrome and colors. It was an overwhelming feeling to be a part of such a noble cause. Sometimes, you think back and say, “Wow, I had a great ride and I helped people just by doing something that I like to do.” It often seems unreal, but that’s what bikers do almost every weekend. We often get overlooked and our efforts are in some cases minimized, but there was definitely no overlooking the number of motorcycles and clubs present and taking part on this day! Motorcycle awareness and the love of riding brings motorcyclist together each year. The joy of the “Gathering”, which supports all clubs, aims to acknowledge and support that we are all riders with a passion for motorcycles, freedom, the open road, our spirit of community and last, but certainly not least, Unity! We were all riding together for the greater good! ells
By the end of the evening everyone was already talking about next years’ ride! There was also lots of talk about Hells Angels MC of Fayetteville’s Christmas celebration. This year it is scheduled to take place December 22nd, the Sunday before Christmas. This community effort provides food, clothing, and gifts to the local hometown area. It is a well-regarded event the club holds in high esteem.

2nd Annual Spring Fever Bash By: Buzz n April 27th Charlotte’s second biggest party of all time happened at the World Famous Tank Town Tavern. The only reason it was the 2nd biggest party is because the first annual Spring Fever Bash turnout can never be beat. This year’s party was another epic event that rocked from the moment we started till late that night. You know it’s gonna be an awesome day when you wake up and there are no clouds in the sky. For a while there, we had rain just about every weekend, so I was stoked when Bash Day dawned with clear skies. Tank Town Tavern was already hoppin’ when I got there to set up the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine booth and the lot was filling with other vendors, too. We had a ton of vendors set up that day including The Karney Law Firm, The Rebel Spirit, Charlotte FD, Cigar Box Guitars, Phat Whipz, A CBD Booth, Freedom Biker Church, OBAC Biker Apparel, Kim Oats Jewelry, Lucky 13 Custom Jewelry and Purple Heart Homes. Angelo & Brandy (Brangelo) of Tank Town Tavern really know how to take care of their patrons and are the king and queen of event hosting. They had
O
2 beer tubs set up in the parking lot to compliment the patio bar and the roll up window that gives thirsty patrons access to the main bar from outside. There was no problem getting a beer even with this huge crowd coming in! Once everyone was set up and ready to go, SHRAPNYL had tuned up and got some help from Rick Thomas, “the Human

Jukebox”. They call Rick “The Human Jukebox” because the man can play and sing just about any song you throw at him. He’s a regular at TTT so when you see his name on their ad, make sure you go check him out! Rick and SHRAPNYL had never played together but they jammed together like seasoned vets. As the bikes poured in, Lisa, “The Pit Boss”, was running parking and getting everyone lined up for the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Bike Show. This year we were lucky enough to have Bob Karney & Sean Clayton of the Karney Law Firm as our Celebrity Bike Show Judges. Bob upped the ante this year and threw $500 cash into the bike show, ($350 for the Judged class and $150 for the peoples’ choice winner). We had some really awesome laser etched bike show plaques from Bacher Metal Works for the winners, and as always, the Judged class winner gets their bike featured in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. I’m glad I didn’t have to pick the winner out of the string of bikes being judged! The day seemed to zip by as it usually does when you are having a killer time. SHRAPNYL was killing it on stage. If you have never had the good fortune of hearing these guys, stop what you are doing, look at Tank Town Tavern’s schedule
and go see them play. These guys rock the house bouncing from Metallica to Beastie Boys and even they even threw some Michael Jackson in there with a metal spin to it. No joke y’all, these guys get it done! It was a good thing that there were some food trucks on location because I was getting famished! Crafty Burger and The Hog N Dog food trucks were dishing out their best. There were some good looking plates coming out! The middle of the day attraction was a Burn Out Contest that Joker Powersports out of Blacksburg, SC was sponsor-

ing. John from Joker Powersports was on hand and was ready to give a new tire to the winner of the burnout contest. While we were rounding up contestants Zach and Kristen from The Rebel Spirit added an extra $50 to the grand prize. Just about the time we were getting the competition started a new entry took to the burnout stall, hooked up his bike and started burning that thing down. Let me tell you, it had to be a 5 minute burnout that ended with a blow out! The rider then whipped out a bottle of lighter fluid, sprayed down the bike, threw a match on it and walked away. As no one was willing to top that performance he was awarded top honors, but I’m not sure what he’s gonna do with the new tire. SHRAPNYL took the stage again and went straight back to shredding until it was time to do the bike show results. The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Charlotte area reps “Stretch” and Alice helped count the votes for the “People’s Choice” award as Sean and Bob walked the bike show to make

Sean Clayton took the mic to announce the winner of the “Judged Class” bike and called Wolf up to the stage. Wolf had entered his 1978 H-D Shovel Head and it was beautiful. Wolf had owned and worked on this “daily rider” himself for the past 40 years! It was a great moment. He was awarded $350 from the Karney Law Firm, a laser etched plaque made by Bacher Metal Works and will be featured in an upcoming issue of the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Congrats to both Artie and Wolf. My part of the day was over and it was time to relax and party, which is easy to do at Tank Town Tavern. I cannot say enough about what a great team Angelo and Brandy have at the Tank. They are a great destination and a true biker bar that makes you feel welcome and will give you some sh!# just to make you feel loved. If you
have never been to the Tank, now’s the time. Tank Town Tavern has “Ride in Sundays” sponsored by Karney Law Firm and live music over the weekend. They are always down for a good time and The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine highly recommends Tank Town Tavern. In fact, we are already looking at the 3rd Annual Spring Fever Bash and you should be, too. It will be the 3rd biggest biker party that Charlotte has ever seen, only surpassed by the previous two Spring Fever Bashes!

Thunder Road Harley-Davidson Open House By: Scott Wicker
T
Thunderroad Harley-Davidson in Danville, Va. On Saturday, April 20th , they held an Open House for all their loyal customers and friends. There were several workshops that were very informative including a LED lighting show and a path to performance workshop. Anthony from the parts department held a very “enlightening” course on LED lighting featuring some of the latest additions to headlamps, marker lamps, and turn signals. He gave us some very interesting information on the different types of headlamps and told us of some very inexpensive ways to make upgrades. There was also a very informative session on stages of performance upgrades from intake, exhaust, and tuning upgrades to cam shafts, big bore kits, and throttle bodies. The show room was full of 2019 Harleys in all models and colors for everyone to choose from. There was live entertainment by Dirt Road Scholars that had many people lined up in lawn chairs to listen to the favorite tunes. There were free tacos and drinks while they lasted, and they also had a drawing for a free leather jacket or a motorcycle riders’ course. We would like to Thank Everyone at Thunderroad Harley-Davidson for their hospitality. Be sure and go by and see them soon! Remember! Ride Safe! here have been a lot of exciting things happening at

Thunder In The Smokies Spring Rally 2019 By: Lori, Christian, & WildThing (who wasn’t there) hate it that I could not attend the Thunder In The Smokies Spring Rally 2019 the first weekend in May this year. It is always a great motorcycle rally set in Maggie Valley in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina. Maggie Valley is such a jewel, just chillin’ there is comforting. Mark & I were at the very first Thunder In the Smokies Rally and attended twice a year for many years. It had its growing pains and the rains came sometimes, but overall, the music was great, the bike games fun, and the bike show attracted some really beautiful motorcycles. The regulars that showed up year after year made the rally seem like a family gathering. And the stories we would share, “you know, remember the year that we ……”. Yes, I hope it never ends… Our western Carolina Representative, Christian Pruitt, WAS there this
I
spring and he said: Of course, when you get to go to one of the coolest rallies and our Western North Carolina mountains it’s going to rain!!! The morning started out great and then of course we got greeted by this beautiful storm rolling through the valley, but the bike games still existed!!! The participants had to get through a series of tasks to find the winners. The first was the slow race, that is a rider rides his bike the slowest without touching the ground!! Second, was the toilet and plunger between the couples. You must see the pictures for that explanation, lol. The games were sponsored by Cartel Bagger of Maggie Valley and Iron Horse Motorcycle Lawyers. Got to see a lot of great people and meet some new ones that tried to brave out the rain. But even though the rain hit us hard, there was still a great time for all!! Lori, who along with Chis are the promoters of this rally and she gave us the list of winners: Bike Show Winners: $1,000 was divided between these three:1st place Gary Abernathy $500, 2nd place was awarded to David Troyler $ 300 and 3rd place went to Johnny Anderson $200.
The bike games had to be halted due to weather & lack of participation, but some still took home some jack. Bike Games Winners were: 1st place Josh Rhodes $300, 2nd place Roger Smith $200, and 3rd place Mike Shramek $100. Well, there you have it, a short run down of the spring rally. But wait…
there’s more. Make plans to ride on up the mountains to the summer version of Thunder In The Smokies June 28 – 30 or the fall edition September 6 – 8, 2019. Hope to see ya there.

Maddaddy’s 30th Anniversary Party By:Johnny Reb n 17 May 2019 I was invited to attend Paul “Maddaddy” Conway’s 30th Anniversary Party. This was a party to celebrate his 30 years as a Ghost Rider. Now, 30 consecutive years in any organization is quite the accomplishment, but in an MC it’s a lot harder to find. “Maddaddy” joined the US Navy in 62’ and was discharged in 65’. Not long after, he joined the US Air Force and ended up in Vietnam. 1967-1968 he was in Country, which meant he went thru the TET offensive. He made a career of the US Air Force retiring in 1983. In 1988 “Maddaddy” started prospecting for the Wayne County Ghost Riders at the tender age of 44. Now I believe he was at Wayne County for 10 years or so; served as President and then switched to the Wilson County Chapter. “Maddaddy” is one of the most well-loved members in the whole Ghost Rider Nation. There are still active members with some more time under their belts, but you will be hard pressed to find anyone who gets more respect. I, personally, have known “Maddaddy” for 3 years now. He and I hit it off from the start, because we had a lot in common; him being a proud Vietnam Veteran and myself being a Marine. So, it didn’t take long for him and me to become friends. The party was a real blast, it was by invitation only. Maddaddy bought all the adult beverages and also the food. On top of that, he was playing the tunes. If you have ever attended
O
a party where Maddaddy was playing DJ, you heard a real eclectic mix of music. Ya just never knew what you were going to get. Well, my brother, I hope I did you justice for your 30th Anniversary Party. I know that I speak for a lot of bros, that just want you to know how much you mean to this Nation. When I say ML&R, it’s from the heart, brother. I hope you have as much fun in the next 30 as you have had in your first30. Johnny Reb Out

22nd Annual Freedom Memorial Wall Dedication
By: Caroline he Freedom Memorial Wall Dedication has become an event at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson that draws the motorcycle community together every year. While its purpose is to remember our riding friends and family who have passed away, it is also to celebrate their lives and love of riding. The day began at 10 am with gospel music and inspirational speaker: this year’s speaker was Preacher Bob. Then, the memorial ride went on from 11 a.m. until noon and the riders came back to Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in time for a delicious lunch and fellowship. The Memorial Wall dedication ran from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. Before the dedication, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson’s General Manager, Ray Perry, read the Proclamation issued by Winston-Salem Mayor, Allen Joines, stating that the first Sunday in May has been proclaimed as “Freedom Memorial Wall Sunday”. The day was quite rainy, but that did not stop family and friends coming out to pay their respects and listen as each name on the wall was read. A balloon release completed this beautiful ceremony. Next year, the 23rd Annual Freedom Memorial Wall Dedication will be held on the first Sunday in May, which is the 3rd. Mark your calendar and watch for the ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Anyone who wishes to have a person added to the Memorial
T
Wall can obtain an application at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson. Although many riding groups, such as the Winston-Salem HOG Chapter #2619 and the Winston Wings dedicate their time and resources to maintain the Freedom Memorial Wall, donations are very much needed and appreciated. If you would like to help out, you can contact David Nicoletta at 336-9785542. You can also go by Smokin’ Harley-Davidson at 3441 Myer Lee Drive in Winston-Salem, NC. or call them at 336790-6094.

A
few years back,
Bikers For Diapers
“Boston” Bob” and Piper Ellis had a dream of giving back to their community. Well, on April 27, 2019, that dream became a reality. Bob and Piper led 84 bikes that thundered 103 miles, from Boneyard Harley- Davidson in Winterville to Black Cat HarleyDavidson in Rocky Mount. Then “Reaper” from the Veteran Enforcers Motorcycle Association led the pack to Shelton’s Harley-Davidson in Goldsboro. As the riders pulled into Shelton’s Harley-Davidson, they were greeted by a live band and representatives from all four pregnancy centers who were serving food and drinks. All this was done to benefit the pregnancy centers of Pitt, Wilson, Nash and Wayne counties. The past few months, boxes were being filled at all the Harley-Davidson dealerships. Bob and Piper finished out the afternoon by calling off tons of raffle tickets and personally thanking everyone who came out today to help raise over $800 to support their cause. As the Thunderbirds from a local airshow flew over, all the bikers started to head off into the sunset but not before helping this great cause. As for myself, I know, I was blessed to be a part of it and I can’t wait for next year.
