Letter From The Editor #263 of the Carolinas ‘Full Throttle Magazine. In spite of all the cancelations and postponements, life goes on. This in no way means that we are diminishing the effect that this “pandemic” has had on some people and our country in general, but it does seem like we are beginning to realize the easing of some of the draconian “Executive Orders” that, arguably, have caused more damage than the virus itself. In North Carolina, Governor Cooper, has finally granted his permission to begin “Phase Two” of his recovery plan. I cannot go into all the details, but it has allowed more businesses to open, with restrictions, of course. That has provided some relief to certain businesses and that is good news for everyone. Many “bikers” have been out and about enjoying their expanded opportunities to socialize within the “guidelines.” In South Carolina, we understand that there has been more progress made toward returning to “normal” and we are getting reports of many people riding to Myrtle Beach for some recreational time. Good for all of you! I am trying not to make this a political statement nor belittlement of anyone. If you are not comfortable, please exercise your right to stay at home or to venture out to whatever degree you are comfortable. It may be different for everyone. That being said, please respect each other’s choices so as many as possible can feel comfortable in each setting. Moving on, we would like to invite everyone to come out on June16th when the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine will host our first bike night of 2020 at 711 West Main Street in Jamestown, NC. From 6-9pm, with free beer, music, vendors, best bike on the lot contest, and more. See the ad in this issue or visit FullThrottleMagazine.com for more information. We hope that you will join us on June 16th for a “freedom” party” Hopefully, we may even be in “Phase Three” by then and more “restrictions” will be lifted. At any rate, we hope to see you then and, as always, be careful out there. ou are reading issue

Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group The Firm That Rides®

Submitted by Shannon Rights

here were many attorneys advertising motorcy-

clist representation, but few lawyers if any actually rode bikes and no one was doing the work to protect the right to ride,” Tom McGrath recalls. “As a motorcyclist, I felt there needed to be someone who could not only represent riders when they are injured but tap into a personal passion of motorcycling to represent our community in front of lawmakers and regulators.” These were the words that molded the philosophy of the Motorcycle Law Group when founder Tom McGrath started his one-man practice in Virginia. Now over 30 years later, the Motorcycle Law Group continues to be on the forefront of representing riders both in the courtroom and out. We have offices in NC, VA, SC, and GA where we continue to live our motto of being “the Firm that Rides®”. To date 99% of our staff are avid riders who get out on the roads every chance they get. You can catch our attorneys and support staff at numerous motorcycle events each month. While enjoying the freedoms of the open road, we realize that we must also protect our right to ride. We are passionate about protecting motorcyclists’ rights and serve as members of our local State Motorcycle Rights Organizations and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. At Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group, we believe in giving back to our riding community. Tom McGrath and the Motorcycle Law Group were instrumental in opening Virginia’s HOV lanes to motorcyclists. In 2008, we challenged the City of Myrtle Beach, S.C.’s anti-motorcycle ordinances and had them overturned by the Supreme Court of South Carolina; all at no cost to our clients. Full Throttle Magazine’s own Mark and Molly Infield were represented by the Motorcycle Law group during that time. In NC, Tyler Stiles works with CBA/ABATE of NC as a registered Lobbyist fighting for motorcyclists’ rights, such as the 2019 Anti-Masking bill which changed the law so that riders may now legally cover their faces when riding in North Carolina. All our attorneys are avid riders who work in their communities and states. Partners Matt Danielson, Liz Sorrell and Chad Fuller along with attorneys Katie Fuller and Tyler Stiles continue to honor the legacy of founder Tom McGrath’s vision. When you call us, you will not be shipped off to a lawyer referral program. We live and work in our communities

providing you with the expertise you need to handle your case. As riders, we can convey to juries the issues that affect motorcyclists. We are available 7 days a week to help you with your case. Our areas of practice include Motorcycle Accidents, Car/ truck accidents, medical malpractice and helping the victims of drunk drivers. We also offer insurance policy review at no cost to ensure that you have the proper coverages to protect yourself. We offer educational seminars to riding clubs, groups and organizations. To schedule one of our attorneys to come out and speak with your group, please contact the Coordinator for that state. #DannerStrong

By: Pam Irvin et me introduce you

to a young man that I have met only through stories from his family and friends. Danner Cochran, road name Turbo, is an 11 year old Superhero from Andrews, NC. Danner, his parents Matthew and Ashley Cochran, and brother Liam are an inspiration and a solid example of the power of prayer, hope and determination. When Danner was only 18 months old, he was diagnosed with a form of cancer known as Rhabdomyosarcoma. He suffered years of surgeries, chemo and radiation treatments. After having a tumor removed from his spine, a kidney removed and a rib removed, he was finally cancer free. The tumor resulted in scoliosis which caused him to have to wear a brace for years. Now, at 11 years old, he has been diagnosed with another, more vicious cancer, Chondrosarcoma. Chondrosarcoma is a

rare type of bone cancer that develops in the soft tissue near the bones and is extremely hard to treat. For Danner, the cancer had developed rapidly and has formed in his hips and lungs. Local doctors had told Danner’s family that this cancer is untreatable in this case, but the family and community are not giving up hope. The Commander of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA) in Murphy, David “Scout” Nelson was contacted asking if he could get together several bikers to ride by Danner’s house to cheer him up because he loves motorcycles. Well, five days and several phone calls later, several chapters of the CVMA across North Carolina, and other clubs and associations from North Carolina and Georgia had rounded up so many that it turned into an event. They decided to surprise Danner with a parade of motorcycles. The groups met at the Hot Spot in Murphy, NC and rode a 20 mile police escorted route to Andrews, NC where Danner was with his family. When we arrived at the staging point in Andrews, Grandpa Charlie’s Country Cookin’ Restaurant, we were greeted by a

fire truck full of children holding “Danner Strong” signs. Not long after that came the parade of motorcycles. From Grandpa Charlie’s, all the motorcycles, the fire truck, a SWAT Vehicle and several other police vehicles all paraded through town to Ronnie’s Pub where the event took place. The CVMA had a motorcycle vest made for Danner with several patches on it including his road name “Turbo”. The smile on his face when he was given the vest was priceless. I was told that he even sleeps in his vest. He was also gifted several other things during the event including an autographed MMA fight picture from a local MMA fighter. Besides Danner’s love for motorcycles, he also loves MMA. He is definitely a fighter! Everyone mostly stayed on or near their bikes due to the social distancing guidelines. At the end of the ceremony, Danner gave the signal for all bikes to start. What an amazing sight to see his face

light up when all of the bikes started in unison. Over 200 motorcycles were present for this event. It was an amazing show of what a community can do when everyone unites for a cause. It also proved to me what the motorcycle community can accomplish when called upon. Over $32,000.00 was raised for Danner and his family by the community. There is a Facebook page for all who want to follow along with Danner’s story and progress, #Dannerstrong.

Metrolina Motorsports By: David Burnette

ey y’all,

I hope everyone is keeping safe during this pandemic mess we’ve been having to deal with. I know it sucks being cooped up at home having to watch reruns on TV we’ve seen at least 20 times or all of the political BS going on. But I have a better idea. Why not take the bike to Mark Ward over at Metrolina Motorsports in Kings Mountain and get some upgrades done and then get out and social distance yourself out on the road? I know you got at least $1200 burning a hole in your pocket. Lol;) I stopped by and had a talk with Mark the other day and he was telling me all about what they had to offer in the way of upgrades. It sounds like they can handle anything that you’re looking for; tires, rims, exhaust, bags, air ride systems, radios, fairings, motor upgrades, or just basic service. They can build you a custom bagger, trike, whatever your looking for. They even build hot rods, motors; you name it they can probably help you find it. They have been in business now for 3 years and the business is doing good. I’ve some of the custom baggers they put out. They’re top notch. Maybe your just needing a good dependable used bike. Metrolina Motorsports has some in stock for about all price ranges and they can help with financing. So, get off the couch put some clothes on and get to riding. Go by and see Mark and the crew over at Metrolina Motorsports located at 714 N. Cleveland Avenue in Kings Mountain,

NC 28086 and get to riding. The phone number is 704-2596204. You can also find them on Facebook.com/MetrolinaMotorsports/ Or at:Metrolinamotorsports.com Y’all be safe out there and God Bless;)

PGR Mission For James Norman By: Wally Wersching

Patriot Guard Riders mission for James Norman on Friday May 1st at 2:30pm at the Lakeview Memory Gardens (1774 Filbert Hwy), in York, South Carolina. It was the first invitation to a PGR mission in a long time. James Robert Norman, 79, of Clover, SC, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2020. He was a Vietnam veteran who served over 20 years in the US Air Force, then retired as a Head of Maintenance at Heritage USA. Heritage USA was an Christian-themed water park, theme park, and residential complex in Fort Mill, South Carolina, built by televangelist Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, founders of PTL Club. Heritage USA opened in 1978, and by 1986 it attracted nearly 6 million visitors annually and employed around 2,500 people. In September 1989 Hurricane Hugo caused severe damage to many of the buildings. Heritage USA closed shortly after the storm. This was the first PGR Honor Mission in this area during the pandemic, and we followed all rules and regulations set by the CDC, and the South Carolina Veterans’ Affairs. Each attendee was required to bring a personnel face-covering. It did not have to be an actual mask; any sort of covering was sufficient. PGR members were required to maintain at least a six-foot distance between each other during the briefing and flag line. was invited to attend a

We were also instructed to be no closer than forty feet from the family funeral tent. Ride Captain, Harvey Mayhill, and his wife Lin officiated over the event. No other military group was there, so the PGR had to do everything. Friday came, and it was a very nice day with sunny skies and temps in the low 70’s. I wore my long sleeved white shirt with my black vest. I always want to look professional when I attend a PGR Honor Mission. My vest is unlike all the others at the event. I have no patches on it, and I can snap it without any

extensions. I took the long way by Rte. 74 to Rte. 161 in Kings Mountain then south to Rte. 321. The cemetery was on Rte. 321 just north of the intersection with of Rte. 161. I arrived at about 2:15, and parked “Miss Vickie” with the other bikes. Even with their masks on, I recognized a few friends from other PGR missions. I shared a copy of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazine with every one of the participants. I walked to the York County Veterans Memorial in the cemetery and took a few pictures. It was very interesting with the names of veterans on the wall from World War 1 up to the Operation Iraqi Freedom. There was a display of all the military flags next to the memorial. When I returned to the bikes, we were asked to move our bikes nearer the funeral tent to get ready for the service. After we parked, one of James’ sons and granddaughter came up to us and thanked each one of us for being there for James. When it was time to take the coffin with James to the funeral tent, some of the PGR were recruited to help as pallbearers. There were only a few family members at the service. Harvey gathered us around to give us our instructions. He and his wife Lin are very professional. He said that he and his wife would be folding the burial flag to give to the family because there were no other military people there. One of

the PGR members had a trumpet and would play taps. Then Lin gave out the flags for us to hold while in the flag line. The service started about 2:00pm. We had to stay forty feet away from the tent so it was difficult to hear what they were saying about James. When there was no traffic on Rte. 321, I could hear them saying how much he would be missed. I wish I could have heard more of the eulogy for him. After the service was over, we rolled up our flags, and placed them back into the truck for the next mission. Before I left, I made sure that every one of the sixteen PGR members in attendance had a copy The Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazine to take home. I rode home on Rte. 5 heading north to Shelby. I arrived home about 3:15. I felt proud that I could stand for James. It was a great way to spend a retirement day.

For The Love Of Motorcycles ith everyone’s talks

about what’s “normal” and the “new normal” I thought maybe I should look up normal. What is it to really be normal? The “normal” range infers percentages; depending on the criteria you may choose or prefer to be abnormal or in some cases just not as normal as others. We all try to stay upbeat and think about the good things. Of course, that’s easier for some people; they find no problems identifying what they’re thankful and blessed to have. However, we have family friends and neighbors that cannot see the world in an optimistic fashion somedays. A lot of us may take some solace and joy in our love of riding. Thankfully, we’ve been able to do that on some sunny days. I take it as an important time for me to just be with Harley, Harley Time! I live in the country, so it’s often a lone ride, but those are my favorite! I typically or “normally” have a destination that will put me in the company of some awesome bikers, but I must admit the ride to get there is so pleasant!

So, as practice makes perfect, I plan to continue my lone rides in hopes that we will be able to fellowship together soon! Lone rides are great, and are certainly time well spent, but I do miss all the amazing rides we used to go on together I suppose we all feel like we have a lot of weight on our shoulders. Questioning and thinking about the future implications of changes and how they will affect us all. Those are not easy points of debate with blurred lines of what is correct or incorrect, what is right or wrong; It’s just always nice to be able to ride it out! We have all had those rain or shine rides. The shines are welcomed, appreciated, valued and filled with good times; but those rain days, they show your character! Pull your bootstraps up, fasten your helmets, and stand ready to ride “For the love of motorcycles!” So, in the lull, try to check on your neighbors, send someone a card, tell someone you love them, And make as much motorcycle time for yourself as you can! Stay blessed, stay safe and keep riding!

Ride To Work Day Ride To Work is to advocate and support the use of motorcycles and scooters for daily transportation and to provide information about everyday utility riding to the general public. There are all kinds of stats and statistics available on the Ride To Work website and, for that matter, all over the internet, supporting the advantages of motorcycle riding over car driving for utility reasons. Traffic congestion and fuel consumption are probably the advantages most often touted. I like the parking space advantage being three to five motorcycles fit in the space for one automobile. At RideToWork.org it says: If every work day were a Ride To Work Day, 60,000 gallons of fuel would be saved X 250 work days = 15,000,000 less gallons used per year. The first annual Ride to Work Day event was proposed in Road Rider magazine (now titled Motorcycle Consumer News) in the May 1992 issue. This is an excerpt from that “Ride to Work” editorial: “You may remember several months ago when Bob Carpenter, commenting in his ‘Two Up’ column, mentioned how neat he thought it would be if there was one day a year when everyhe mission of

one who owned a motorcycle used it to ride to work. That comment was prompted by a T-shirt produced by Aerostich RiderWear that simply said, ‘Work To Ride, Ride To Work.’ Everyone seemed to think that a national ‘Ride To Work’ day was one heck of a good idea.” The first Ride to Work Day event date was July 22nd, 1992. For several years various motorcycle businesses informally promoted every third Wednesday in July as Ride To Work Day. These early advocates included Road Rider Magazine, Dunlop Tires, and Aerostich/Riderwearhouse. The event continued to grow as an informal grass roots demonstration every year until 2000. That year a non-profit organization, Ride to Work was formed to help organize and promote Ride to Work Day. The first Ride to Work Day event led by this group was the third Wednesday in July of 2001. This day was the annual day until 2008, when it was changed to the Third Monday In June. This change was made to climatically better accommodate riders world-wide, and to give more riders an opportunity to participate. Ride to Work is 501(c)(4) nonprofit, all-volunteer effort. Organizers include Andy Goldfine, Lynn Wisneski and Christine Holt. This year, the 29th Annual International Motorcycle & Scooter Ride To Work Day is being celebrated on Monday June 15th. Everyone that is able, please ride your motorcycle to work and show our numbers to the public and politicians and that we are from all walks of life, that Motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation, and riding motorcycles demonstrates a social good. Share your Ride To Work photos with The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine! Email to: RideToWork@FTCarolinas.com C’mon, let me see you and your ride! WildThing says Ride To Work Every Day.

Spring BRAKE Check Your Pads & Flush Fluid Story and photos by Alan Dockery

I hope y’all did more than just wash and detail your motorcycles. This was a good time for spring maintenance on all your vehicles. Oil changes for everything including the mowers, minibikes, go-carts. Please, take the oil to recycle. Brakes need at least a quick check. Those pads that were OK last time you looked could be close to squalling now. Y’all ride and drive the mountain roads. Half worn brake pads may be fine for puttin’ round town, but they will get hot and fade faster than new pads going down Hwy181. Long before you get to Dead Man’s Curves, you’ll smell hot brakes. One thing I do on all my vehicles in the spring is flush out old brake fluid. Harley-Davidson had a recall a couple years ago because folks weren’t flushing brake fluid and it was turning to jelly in the calipers. Well, think about it for a second. The fluid in the caliper gets repeated compression and heat exposure. Flush your brake fluid on vehicles at a minimum for annual uring the excessive shutdown

brake maintenance. On Facey Space folks ask “dumb mechanical questions” every day. Real basic stuff. I don’t bust on them; they are trying to fix something and don’t know how. Things us old guys learned decades ago can help them. Yes, I know there are a dozen ways to bleed brakes. I was first taught the old method by Daddy and Papa. One guy under the car and turning a little wrench this way and back at the right times. pump - pump – hold - open valve - close valve - pump - pump – hold. keep doing that until the pedal feels good. And there are all kinds of gizmos for “One person brake bleeders.” I don’t remember when, but a long time ago, I started putting aquarium tubing over the bleeder valve and ran it to the ground just to keep the fluid from squirting all over the place. Brake fluid is nasty stuff and will ruin paint plus it’s not cool to get on you. I used to be into street rods, and we kept front suspension parts painted, clean and pretty. Then I began running the tubing into a jar to keep the fluid for proper disposal. Well tell John Boy I said, “Duh Huh!” We have made a one man brake bleeding tool. I’m sure someone sells a kit to do this, but I have used the pickle jar and aquarium tubing one man bleeder for a long time. Some folks just use a long piece of tubing. You can see the bubbles and know

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

for sure you have all the air out. Duh Huh. Also, there are two kinds of brake fluid, glycol based, and silicone based. They do not mix at all and will turn into jelly. DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are glycol based. The only silicone based brake fluid is DOT 5. Never mix brake fluids, not even 5.1. DOT 5 ain’t for anti-lock braking systems. Not an issue for us old bike guys. I prefer DOT 5 in motorcycles for a few reasons. DOT 5 will not harm your paint. DOT 3 might remove paint to bare metal before you notice a drop on the fender. Motorcycles operate in the rain and get parked in the yard for days and generally abused. DOT 5 brake fluid is hydrophobic and will not attract nor mix with water. DOT 3 will suck up water from the air. When I take apart old motorcycle brake master cylinders and especially the slave cylinders, I often find DOT 3 brake fluid that has turned into crystals and corroded aluminum parts beyond saving and using. I convert all my motorcycles to DOT 5 when I rebuild brakes. If you buy an old motorcycle and the DOT 3 on the cap has been ground off, then I likely did the brakes on it. So, how do you figure out if that old bike you just bought has DOT 3 or DOT 5 brake fluid? Real simple test. Yes, DOT 5 is purple when fresh and new, so it should be easy. Nope. DOT 5 ages to a clear yellow. Aged DOT 5 looks like fresh DOT 3. Anywho, remember DOT 5 is not water soluble. Suck some fluid from the master cylinder and put in a Pimento Jar with water, then shake, let sit. If obviously the brake fluid separates and does not mix with water, then it’s DOT 5. Motorcycle Safety Funds In Danger Legislative Update Motorcycle Riders Foundation, Washington DC he Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) was alerted by our contacts in the U.S. Senate regarding a proposed change to the dedicated 405 Motorcycle Safety funds in the National Priority Safety Programs that is authorized through the Highway Bill. The proposed change to this program would add another criteria for states to qualify for motorcycle safety funds. In order to qualify, states have to meet two of the six current criteria. In addition to the current criteria, the additional qualifying area would add a category for states that have a mandatory helmet law for anyone under the age of 18. While meeting the under 18 helmet law is not mandatory to receive these funds, we at the MRF oppose any such change. We cannot allow any amount of erosion of our rights on this issue. The MRF is adamantly opposed to

any federal law that would require the use of a helmet, apparel or conspicuity standard. We are actively monitoring this situation to make sure that this staff discussion does not find its way into any draft highway bill legislation. The back-door attempt to include language that leverages a state without a helmet law for those under 18 as one of the minimum criteria may encourage some states to change their current laws to make it easier to qualify for these federal funds. In 1975, Congress enacted a law forcing all states to enact a mandatory helmet in order to receive any federal transportation funds. The MRF and state motorcycle rights organizations around this country fought tirelessly during this time for the law to be overturned. Congress flip-flopped on the helmet law by striking down the 1975 law,

www.

then reinstating it in 1991. The MRF and the motorcycle rights organizations were finally successful in 1995 by overturning the federal mandatory helmet law. We at the MRF have already communicated with our contact that we would be adamantly opposed to any changes to the language. This potential change could be viewed as an attempt to blackmail states into changing their current laws as a way to additionally qualify for these funds. While there is not any official draft in circulation for the next highway bill reauthorization, we will continue to remain on guard against attempts to add or implement such changes. The motorcycle safety funds were first authorized in 2005 through the highway reauthorization known as SAFETEALU. The federal government began a dedicated state grants program in an attempt to reduce the number of single and multi-vehicle crashes involving motorcyclists. The program has continued to be authorized in the federal highway bill legislation and is currently still active in the current iteration known as the FAST ACT of 2015 which is set to expire in September 2020. Last week, we reported that NHTSA had released the fiscal year 2020 state grant totals for each of the National Priority Safety Programs. The $4.2 million motorcycle safety grant program was divided between forty-three states and Puerto Rico. In fact, the motorcycle safety grant program only makes up 1.5% of the appropriation for this program. With over 8.5 million registered motorcycles on our nation’s roadways, the federal government only spends on

31

average $0.49 per motorcycle. We will keep you posted on this and other topics as lawmakers continue the process of drafting a new transportation and infrastructure package in 2020.

A Sunday Ride To Meet New Friends By: Wally Wersching n Sunday April 26th, I had to go for a ride. It was too beautiful out with temps in the low 70’s’ under sunny blue skies. I had no special place in mind when I left. I headed west on Rte. 74. When I turned right onto Washburn Switch Road, I thought that I might stop in at the CCIB clubhouse if anybody was there. After a couple miles, I rode under the new Rte. 74 bypass for the bypass. Years ago, they built a bypass for the road that went through Shelby. Since then, it has been built up so that the bypass has more congestion on it than the original Rte. 74. Now they are building a bypass for the bypass that will go far enough outside of Shelby that there should be no congestion. We’ll see how that works. There was nobody at the CCIB Clubhouse, so I continued until I turned right onto Hollis Road heading north. I was really enjoying the back roads of the county. People were out and about working in their yards or playing with their kids. It was very relaxing. When I got to Stagecoach Road, I turned right and followed

it into Polkville. I saw a motorcycle parked at the gas station, and pulled in. Since there are no events to attend, I haven’t been able to give away many of the Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines that I get each month. Now I look for bikes parked and stop to give magazines away. There was a young lady standing next to the Harley in the

station. We talked for a few minutes until her uncle came out. I introduced myself and gave him a Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazine. We spoke for a few minutes until another bike rolled in. I walked over to it with a magazine in hand. They were a couple out for a Sunday afternoon ride. We spoke for a few minutes until they walked into the convenience store to buy a drink. Then I left heading south on Rte. 226. As I got close to the new bypass exit, I decided to try it out and turned left. Once on the bypass, the speed limit was 65 mph, and the road was super smooth. It should be – it was new! I saw different sights as I rode. I even saw my granddaughter’s daycare as I passed. There were no other cars on the bypass. Only a small portion of it is open – from Rte. 74 to Rte. 226. I exited heading east on Rte. 74 to go back home. When I got to Beaver Dam Church Road, I noticed motorcycles parked in a gas station on the left. I turned and was parked among the bikes in a minute. I counted the bikes and took enough magazines out of my pack to give every biker a copy. They were all very friendly. Most were members of the Lincolnton chapter of the Sentinels of Hope. They were out for a Sunday ride to Lake Lure. The SOH was founded in 2012 to be the voice and support to all children in need. They work to prevent abuse through education of the public and react to abuse by empowering victims. They assist acute or terminally ill children and their

33

families in their time of need. They also serve as advocates to provide strength and stability to families in crisis. There was also a couple from Gastonia who just stopped for something to drink. They were invited to ride to Lake Lure with the group. It was nice to see bikers greeting and making new friends. I was invited, too, but I had to get home because my son and his family were coming over for Sunday dinner. I said my good-bye’s as I left. Maybe I’ll see them again at one of the upcoming biker events when this pandemic is behind us. I hope so. They are a good group.

Unlock Your Bike’s Maximum Potential By: Mike Humbles ould you agree that the longer we

ride we acquire the ‘feel’ of our bikes and can sense when something isn’t exactly right? In my past, I’ve built and raced cars, Jeeps and motorcycles. They all had what I call a “sweet spot” where they performed their best. If you’ve played sports like golf, tennis, or baseball you can relate to what I’m saying. When you hit the ball in the sweet spot, All the energy is going into the ball to create the outcome you want. At the moment of impact, you know the result is going to be good. The impact of the ball even feels different, and it seems like less effort is needed to get optimal results. Of course, there are those times when you don’t hit the sweet spot and the result is unpredictable. I’ve also had my share of those. I apologize for the broken windows to all who have homes on the golf course fairways where I played. I am 100% convinced that ALL motorized vehicles have unique sweet spots. It’s when the installed components, the tune, the fuel, etc. all work together in complete unison. In my racing days, the suggested timing from TDC (Top Dead Center) was only a starting point. The optimal tuning always happened on the track (and sometimes the back roads).

I’ve been riding motorcycles for about 50 years and I’m a fan of Harley- Davidson’s Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead, Evolution, and Twin Cam engines. Now there’s a new one: Milwaukee-Eight. I was excited to try it out. The torque/ power and fuel efficiency are advertised to be the best yet. I must admit that I was impressed the first time I rode a bike with the M8 engine. However, after buying one and riding it for a while, I felt there was something missing. It felt like it was being held back and not performing at its optimal best. Don’t get me wrong; it was quick with lots of torque. But I remember riding at highway speeds and thinking I needed another gear to shift up to. The RPM seemed fine based on the MPH, but it just felt like something was holding the bike back. It didn’t feel right to me. If you’re like me, you’re tired of feeling shortchanged on performance output due to all of the restrictions programmed (yes, programed) into our bikes. In an effort to tap into the hidden performance of my M8, I added a Stage 1 (intake/exhaust systems) upgrade. The upgrade did improve the sound and stopped me from being able to sneak up on a church mouse. My bike was re-tuned using an available plug-n-play type map that was designed for bikes with similar components. I remember the instructions on my tuner stating to “contact tech support directly via email or a phone call for help choosing the closest combination of exhaust and air cleaner map for your motorcycle.” Closest? I drove it with the Stage 1 upgrade for several months and enjoyed it. My wife and I took long trips, and many local rides. However, there were still some performance parameters that weren’t being utilized. It still felt like the bike was being held back. It’s hard to put into words. Through The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, I found out about Widow Maker Custom Design & Repair. I met Hank Thibodeau (owner of Widow Maker), and he explained what goes into the design and build of today’s bikes. Walk-

cost of the “Tune License” (which is a forever license) and the cost of the actual tune process is only $375 at Widow Maker Custom Design & Repair. In my opinion, that is the best investment you can make on your bike. Unlocking additional performance will bring the bike’s riding experience to an all-new level. Visit Widow Maker Custom Design & Repair’s Facebook and Instagram pages to see more examples of their award winning work. Bottom line; if you are looking to unlock your bike’s maximum potential, do yourself a favor, and give Widow Maker Custom Design & Repair a call at 336-364-8535. Make sure you tell ‘em Mike Humbles from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine sent ya! In the meantime, hold this magazine, I’m going for a ride! ing around in his shop you feel like you’re in a TV episode of American Chopper. The trophies and awards for the custom, hand built masterpiece builds he has done were spectacular! Then I saw several copies of The Carolina’s Full Throttle Magazine on the walls that displayed Hank on the front cover. I knew this guy was for real. Hank explained what he could do for my bike to tap into its hidden performance. I immediately made arrangements with him and took it in. He reworked the head pipes first, and then set the bike up for re-programing. He showed me the factory fuel maps with all the cells and explained what they meant. He also explained why the bike isn’t operating at its “optimal performance level.” Bingo!!! That is exactly what I needed to hear! I didn’t realize that it needed a customized tune, but that explained everything I had been experiencing. I learned that the plug-n-play maps available are normally close enough to allow our bikes to function so that we can ride them. I also learned the plug-n-play maps can only be adjusted +/- 5%. After re-configuring the head pipes and setting my bike up with his version of a map, Hank took it off the lift to get it ready for some data collecting rides. I admit that I was pleasantly surprised when I heard my bike start for the first time after Hank’s modifications to the exhaust system. When Hank took off down the road, I was blown away with what I saw! Was that the same bike I rode in here on??? It’s alive!!! (I got goose bumps writing this…lol) Hank reworked the map a few times to even out some of the spikes (he showed me in 3D) and re-programed my bike with his version of the final customized map. On my ride home I couldn’t stop smiling. Honestly, it felt like a different bike. The throttle response, power and even the sound were greatly improved. I decided to go onto I-85 and test it at highway speeds. OMG! Let me say that I’m no longer looking for a higher gear. The bike now feels like it isn’t holding anything back and is ready to go when I am. The engine runs cooler and performs with much less effort. Finally, it’s in its “sweet spot.” Thank you, Hank! Completely bone stock bikes with factory air intakes/exhaust, etc., can still benefit from a custom tune. The combined

Permits? We Don’t Need No Stinking Permits! Myrtle Beach Spring Rally 2020 By: Lincoln Infield ou may be aware of a

little virus called Covid-19 that swept away all the events from mid-March til present and even some of the future summer events. Well, caught up in the drama was one of the most popular events in the Carolinas, Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Week. This rally, if you have been under a rock your whole life, is always in mid-May and concludes with the 3rd weekend in May. In early March, the future of the world was up in the air and decisions were made by the rally “organizers” to cancel the 81st Annual Spring Bike Rally. The fun part about that is, in general, bikers make their own rules. On April 30th, news outlets broke that Myrtle Beach was to reopen hotels, short term rental on May 1st. South Carolina also opened up some dining accommodations and bars. This naturally opened the doors for bikers who habitually ride to Myrtle Beach for the bi-annual rallies, the most popular being the spring bike week. Hell, most rally goers have long standing reservations or renew their reservations for the upcoming year upon leaving the current rally and most likely would have ridden down any way. Having a good time is our way of life and bikers bring the party where-ever we go, permits and vendors or not. The last weekend of bike week is always the climax of the

rally and when most folks plan to attend. The weather was unbelievable. Sunny skies and upper 70’s made for perfect riding weather and, for some, it was the first bit of spring riding they had gotten to enjoy. It certainly wasn’t the biggest rally Myrtle Beach has ever seen, but there was still a hell of a party going on at SBB, Captain Archie’s, Pops Place and other spots in the area. It was great see a lot full of bikers, hear live music and the smell of roasting tires in the air. Vendors were absent at Barefoot Landing and other popular spots, but that’s ok, If you’re like me you have a plenty of Bike Week shirts in the closet anyway.

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

If you missed out on the party this spring, the bar owners and other local businesses have banned together and Horry County Council voted in a virtual meeting to allow vender permits for a Summer Rally in July. As always dates vary depending on what business you talk to. Beach House Harley-Davidson in Shallotte, NC is having their Summer Rally July 23-26 with Demo rides, sales, food, beer and more. Horry county approved dates for July 13-19 and Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson said they would not participate in the rescheduled “Spring Rally”. As I mentioned before, we don’t need permits and vendors to have a good time and bike week is whenever we show up ready to party. If you are heading down for the summer rally, have a great time. If you aren’t, no worries, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine’s Cruisin’ Calendar is packed with great events EVERY weekend. Or you can always make your own good time. Personally all I need is a couple good friends, full tanks of gas and the open road. Remember, the road goes on forever and the party never ends, even if there are no permits.

AMA Motorcycle Hall Of Famer Joe Bolger Passes Racer, designer, engineer and editor was 90 American Motorcyclist Association <jholter@ama-cycle.org> ICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Joe Bolger, a 2004 inductee into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, died Tuesday, April 21, from complications resulting from a fall at his Barre, Mass., home, his family said. He was 90 years old and had been in failing health the past few months. “He was always happiest when he was in his shop,” his

son, Brent Bolger, said. “He could handle all sorts of problems with engines, and people came here to get their engines fixed. He loved helping people.” Mr. Bolger was a five-time New England Scrambles Champion in the mid-1960s and the 1970s. He also was a self-taught designer and engineer who worked in metal and wood in a small shop behind his home. In 1974, Mr. Bolger created a linked, rising-rate, long-travel suspension that was put into production as the OSSA BLT, meaning “Bolger Long Travel.” He also designed an “equalizer” that reduced or eliminated chain flex, which was often the downfall of the early motocross machines with long-travel suspension. Also among the many patents he held was one for a bead breaker for those troublesome big tires on small ATV wheels. Mr. Bolger was born in Charlottestown, Prince Edward Island, Canada in January 1930. Although still a Canadian citizen, Bolger served in the U.S. Army from 1951 through 1953 and was stationed in Germany and France. Mr. Bolger started racing in 1956 aboard a 500cc AJS. He was a proficient racer and won the New England scrambles championship in both 1964 and 1965. As an organizer, he was instrumental in establishing popular Northeast vs. Canada offroad racing events in the 1960s. With his specialty-part design and manufacturing business growing, in 1972 Mr. Bolger sold his interest in the retail shop to devote himself fulltime to engineering and design. He designed special tools made to work on particular parts of motorcycles, several of which were picked up by Honda and made available to dealerships. During his storied career in motorcycling, Mr. Bolger also was a contributing editor for Cycle World and Cycle Sport magazines. Xtreme Wings -N- Things Reopening Party

By: Lincoln Infield

e’ve all been out riding on these beautiful

days without our normal watering holes as stops. It made for some plan changes and hopefully new roads and scenic destinations were found. Much to our pleasure Xtreme Wings -N- Things along with some other NC business were allowed to reopen their doors May 22nd at 5pm. Opening wasn’t easy with the smothering

restrictions that are in place, rules and warnings, which don’t sit well with bikers, were posted and shared as to what you could expect, like lower occupancy numbers and smaller menus. But the Xtreme team worked it out to make the best reopening that could be had. The sun was out on Saturday, May 23rd so I figured that Xtreme would be a good destination for the afternoon. When I turned onto Myer Lee Dr. I could see the line of bikes parked in the street 100 yards away. A beautiful, gleaming row of chrome on either side of the street in front of the business was a great sight. I pulled down into Smokin’ Harley-Davidson’s parking lot who shares the building with Xtreme Wings- N- Things and walked up the walkway to join the party. Guitar Dave was set up on the side of the building playing his ass off like usual. Dave is a hell of a showman and keeps the crowd going. He took a break in the song to announce that the “Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine was in the house”, thanks, as always, Dave! Xtreme had roped off their parking lot to extend their patio and allow for more patrons to safely gather. Biker Gear and More was set up under their huge tent and were hocking all kinds of biker needs. I’m always on the hunt for cool pins and patches, so I gave them a look. To further accommodate the crowd there was an outside beer tub with ice cold beer that can only

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

be served by hot women! Missy and Kobee filled the part perfectly and posed for as many pictures as the beers they served! The parking lot was full of people milling around enjoying the first time since March that they could stand around and have a beer at Xtreme! Inside, Brandee was keeping those bellied up to the bar satisfied with their favorite libations. As I mentioned, Xtreme was offering a shortened menu, but that didn’t mean that they were serving up their awesome fresh wings! If you ever stop by, they have a bunch of options, but I always go for the Mango Habanero sauce on the wings. Makes my mouth water just typing that out! They were also serving up Boone Potatoes, named after their friends at the Boone Bike Rally, and Kanawha peppers, named after their friends at the Thunder In Kanawha Bike Rally. The wait staff was working hard to keep up with the orders and did a heck of a job! I hung out for a few hours then hit the road. I’m so glad to see Xtreme back open, apparently, so were a lot of other bikers! Check out Xtreme’s ad every month to keep up with what they have going on. Bike Night at Xtreme is every Thursday. Weekends are filled with good times, cold beer and great food. You may even catch some of the areas hottest bands playing on either inside or outside stages. I know they have some killer parties coming up in July so dust off your drinking clothes and let’s have a great time. Check out the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar, starting on page four to see what all is going on.

Bro’s and Bro-ettes,

Broken Promises

ave you ever thought about your life and all the

stuff you face day in and day out? Just look in the mirror and think about all the stuff you have gone through yourself. You have had family members and friends that have passed away and what is the famous last words out of people’s mouths? Call if you need me, I’m here if you need me. Well, people mean well, but you never know what they’re going through. Some are there for you and some are not. When they’re not, that makes us mad and our feelings are hurt, and yes, we talk about them. People mean well with their promises and I believe they intend to be there. Then there are those who could care less. I found that out when Tank passed away. Everyone is human and has their own problems and stuff going on. Even people in church get hurt every Sunday, someone will say something you don’t like, or they don’t speak to you and you blow up and get mad. Some people will use anything to stop going to church. “I’m not going back! There ain’t nothing but a bunch of hypocrites there!” Just remember that everyone that goes to church is not a Christian. You could look at it this way; you go to the grocery store and Walmart with them, so what’s the difference? No matter how bad we have been hurt by people or think we have, God gives us enough love to cover all the hurt. God’s

people have to show their love to win people to the Kingdom. God made the best promise of all: eternal life and kept that promise by going to the Cross for us. Remember this! Matthew 5:38-39 Ye have heard that it has been said an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. 39: But I tell you to resist an evil person, But whosoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other to him also. Have you ever thought about how many times Jesus was hurt? But he still loved us enough to go to the Cross for us. Jeremiah 32:17 Oh Lord God, behold you have made the heavens and earth by your great powers and outstretched arms, there is nothing too hard for you. 2 Chronicles 7: 14 If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. If you didn’t get anything out of this, remember this: The only promise we’re offered is eternal life if we chose to go with Jesus. That promise won’t be broken. In His Wind, Ms. Pat

Iredell County Missions Food Drive By: Gary Steelman

2nd was a beautiful day for a ride. Sunshine and light traffic always seems to make a great day for riding. STE Powersports(STEpowersports.com) in Statesville, NC and the RedKnightsInternational Firefighter MC (redknightsmc.com) held a food drive to assist Iredell Christian Ministries stock up their pantry. The riders gathered at STE Powersports Saturday morning and were greeted with doughnuts and hot coffee. The Statesville City Police even showed up to escort the ride and the social distancing issue was never brought up, as this was just an impromptu ride. There were just a few friends gathered to help out the community in these times of “woe and want”. There are many families across the state in need of assistance as businesses are shuttered due to this current pandemic. These few friends on 100+ bikes half-filled a 48’ refrigerated trailer and raised over $1400 dollars for Iredell Christian Ministries. The effort to organize this food drive began just a week ago. In 5 days, word got around that there was a need and the biker community met ay

the challenge. The ride to escort the food delivery to North Iredell Rescue Station was a glorious sight. From the rear of the pack, on the straightaways, the first bikes in line could be seen nearly a mile and a half up the road topping hills and rounding the turns through North Iredell to the station. The bikes rolled into the station under Old Glory, flying from the Harmony Fire station’s ladder truck. Bikes surrounded the station and individuals unloaded donations of canned goods and drinks from their cars and pickup trucks. The feedbag was laid out everyone was welcomed to hotdogs, chicken wings and pastas. What a way to start off May. Thanks go to the RedKnightsInternational Firefighter MC, STE Powersports and the many club riders that helped to support this run. Ride safe, keep the shiny side up. We want to see you all out there this summer.

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

tied the bags, and proving they contained nothing but sand, reloaded the bags, put them on his shoulders and continued across the border. Two weeks later, the same thing happened. Again the guard demanded to see the two bags, which again contained nothing but sand. This went on every week for six months, until one day the biker with the sandbags failed to appear. A few days later, the guard happened to meet the biker downtown. “Say friend, you sure had us crazy”, said the guard. “We knew you were smuggling something across the border. I won’t say a word, but what is it you were smuggling?” “Motorcycles, the biker replied!”

over, lifted its tail, and sure enough, there was a golf ball with my wife’s monogram on it - stuck right in the middle of the cow’s arse. Still holding the cow’s tail up, I yelled to my wife, ‘Hey, this looks like yours!’ I don’t remember much after that!” I never wanted to believe that my dad was stealing from his job as a road worker. But when I got home, all the signs were there.

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the e-mail.
Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her e-mail expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read: To: My Loving Wife, Subject: I’ve Arrived, Date: July 19, 2019. I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I’ve seen that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was. PS: Sure is freaking hot down here! Two rednecks are sitting on the front porch. One says, “Did you know that elks have sex 10 to 15 times a night?” “Aw crap..,” says his friend. “and I just joined the VFW!” While crossing the US-Mexican border on his motorcycle, the man was stopped by a guard who pointed to two sacks the man had on his shoulders. “What’s in the bags?” asked the guard. “Sand,” said the biker. “Get them off - we’ll take a look,” said the guard. The biker did as he was told, emp-

A biker gets pulled over by a cop. The cop asks, “You’re speeding! Didn’t you see the speed limit sign?” The biker replied, “Yeah I saw the speed limit sign, but I didn’t see you.”

As a brain wave technologist, I often ask post-operative patients to smile to make sure their facial nerves are intact. It always struck me as odd to be asking this question right after brain surgery, so a colleague suggested I ask patients to show me their teeth. Armed with this new phrase, I said to my next patient, “Mr. Smith, show me your teeth.” He shook his head. “The nurse has them.” Two engineering students were biking across a university campus when one said, “Where did you get such a great bike?” The second engineer replied, “Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, “Take what you want.” The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, “Good choice: The clothes probably wouldn’t have fit you anyway.”

My wife is so negative. I remembered the car seat, the stroller, AND the diaper bag. Yet all she can talk about is how I forgot the baby. A man staggered into a hospital with a concussion, multiple bruises, two black eyes, and a five iron wrapped tightly around his throat. Naturally, the doctor asked him, “What happened to you?” “Well, I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife, when at a difficult hole, we both sliced our golf balls into a field of cattle. We went to look for them and while I was looking around, I noticed one of the cows had something white at its rear end. I walked

An Uber is cruising down a boulevard when it runs a red light. “Hey!” the passenger shouts. “Be careful!” “Don’t worry,” says the driver. “My brother does it all the time.” He barrels through the next red light, and the passenger screams, “Stop doing that!” “I’m telling you, my brother does this all the time.” They approach the next light. Just when it turns green, the driver slams on the brakes. The confused passenger asks, “You just ran two red lights; why’d you stop at a green?” “I had to,” says the driver. “My brother might have been coming.” On the first day of school, the teacher asked a student, “What are your parents’ names?” The student replied, “My father’s name is Laughing and my mother’s name is Smiling.” The teacher said, “Are you kidding?” The student said, “No, Kidding is my brother. I am Joking.” There was a blonde who just got sick and tired of all the blonde jokes. One evening, she went home and memorized all the state capitals. Back in the office the next day, some guy started telling a dumb blonde joke. She interrupted him with a shrill announcement, “I’ve had it up to here with these blonde jokes. I want you to know that this blonde went home last night and did something probably none of you could do. I memorized all the state capitals.” One of the guys, of course, said, “I don’t believe you. What is the capital of Nevada?” “N,” she answered.
