‘March’ on, and here we are at the door to warm riding! Yippee! Now all the adventures you were thinking in the dead of winter of are ready to commence thanks in part to the easing of some COVID19 restrictions. And I am always personally happy to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on the 17th! On this month’s cover is 49th Annual Charlotte CBA Swap Meet & Bike Show March 27-28 at the Rowan County Fairgrounds This is always a landmark event and it supports biker’s rights in our state capitol and Washington, DC. We are members and support CBA and suggest you do, too. This event will kick start spring events and is always a great place to visit with folks you haven’t seen all winter. Not to mention all you scroungers looking for that elusive part, it’s waiting on a vendor table for you! Here at Carolinas’ Full Throttle, we can gauge the changing weather by the burgeoning Cruisin’ Calendar as businesses and promoters begin announcing dates and events. Soooo, we are among those announcing – our first bike night of the summer on Friday, June 11. Also mark your calendars for October 15-16, 2021 for The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Mayhem In Midway! We’re planning biker party with all the trimmings! Music, bike show, bike games, and vendors, etc. Check out the new ad in this issue. For all you ambitious biker types, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine is always looking for sales reps. Be the Full Throttle gal or guy in your neighborhood and earn some cash while you’re at it. Call for details, it’s not rocket science. While you’re out and about, check out the goods and services as well as the bars that advertise in this magazine. They are keeping all this good information coming out free to you, in print and online. Be sure and say thanks to them and tell them you saw them in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. While we’re all enjoying the spring riding and attending events, please be mindful of distracted drivers and ride defensively. I had a friend once that advised me to embrace the concept that one is ‘practicing’ every time you climb on your bike. So, concentrate and ‘practice’ and stay safe this spring.

Charlotte CBA Bike Show, Swap Meet & COVID Protest March 27 & 28th, 2021 Rowan County Fairgrounds, Salisbury NC

uring this past year, there hasn’t been much we

could do, other than ride. And no doubt, by now, we need to repair or replace something. A little retail therapy and a pint of relatability certainly seems in order. There’s only one place where any rider, of any bike can go to get anything: a motorcycle swap meet. But it can’t be just any swap meet, it’s got to be big, REALLY big! For 50 years, motorcyclists from the east coast, have looked forward to the bi-annual Charlotte CBA Bike Show & Swap Meet for exactly those reasons. It’s the oldest and largest swap meet and bike show on the east coast, whose title is earned by numerous acres;- magical fields, filled with every goodie a rider might imagine. And COVID has made the need for this event all that more essential. But there’s another reason that makes this event so special. The CBA ABATE of NC is a 501(c)(4) not-for-profit organization. Which means, no volunteer earns a salary and the organization uses every dollar

from fundraisers like this event, to help all motorcyclists. One way in particular is to fund programs such as, the Look Twice Campaign. That program was enacted into law (thanks to the efforts of the CBA) in 2011 and has taught over 400,000 driver’s education students how to watch out for motorcyclists! Typical of bikers, they’ve even been teaching through COVID. The CBA ABATE of NC has been fighting for fair legislation for motorcyclists for 50 years. Every legislative session they push for motorcycle friendly legislation. During the 2021 session for instance, their agenda consists of the GREEN ICE Bill which seeks roads free from grass clippings, the Motorcycle AntiProfiling Bill and the Equal Access Bill, sponsored by Senator Ted Alexander. The Equal Access Bill requires all parking decks built with tax-payer funds to be accessible to motorcyclists. The Charlotte CBA Bike Show & Swap Meet is a vital fundraiser for all 450,000+ motorcyclists in NC, because, with less than 2K

members, they act as the only voice for those 450K motorcyclists in our State Capitol and Washington, DC. At the Charlotte CBA Swap Meet, you’ll find everyone from the weekend rider, to the self-proclaimed motorcycle enthusiast. And you certainly can’t miss the gleam of those distinctive wide smiles they proudly wear as they are walking out carrying those treasured items high, (those slippery things that may have eluded their grasp for years). It is like watching people on a treasure hunt. The hope, the chase and the chance that you’ll find exactly what you’ve been looking for. The likelihood you’ll find it here, is very, very high. Acres and acres of outdoor swap meet vendors, piled high with vintage iron, parts, tools, frames, tires and the smell of grease will surely get you going. There will be a pin-striper on site. And inside, the smell of the acres of leather will inflame the senses and the body! Helmets, gear and anything motorcycle related….. you’ll find it here. You’ll even be able to satisfy your hunger for fries, burgers, beer, a funnel cake and even a pork chop sandwich (but not necessarily in that order). Bike shows are all about: The Bikes! And the Charlotte CBA Bike Show is not only the oldest, the largest, but also the cheapest Show to enter! It’s only $25 to enter your bike (which includes admittance for 1 person to the event for the whole weekend and an event T-Shirt for the first 25 entrants)! There is $1000 in prize money, including $500 for people’s choice. The show starts at 10am both days Admittance is $15 for the day, or $25 for the whole weekend. There will be live music all weekend. More vendor information is available at CharlotteCBA.org or call Rick at 704-577-1546. Bring everyone out to this family-friendly event, (the premises are wheelchair accessible). As all restrictions are still in place for North Carolina Covid Protocol (wink wink). Remember- March 24, 2021 every motorcyclist and everyone who loves a motorcyclist is invited to join the CBA ABATE of NC in Raleigh, as we lobby for our motorcycle friendly agenda. This is a FREE Event! Please see www. CBA-ABATENC.org for more information about this event.

Remembering Dale Walksler

By: Mark & Molly Infield

Dale (center) Presenting Mark & Molly With Lifetime Donorship Portrait

very once in a while, you are fortunate to meet

someone who is remarkable. When we first met Dale Walksler, there was just something about him…I think it is called charisma. He was promoting his museum, new to North Carolina, and from Illinois. He had moved his collection from Mt. Vernon Illinois to Maggie Valley North Carolina. Little did we know then what a treasure Dale and his museum would become to motorcycle enthusiasts in NC. Our first encounter with Dale was at Rockingham Dragway in 2002 when he was promoting the opening the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC. Amidst the booths of t-shirts and motorcycle parts, Dale set out an antique display case on which to place his literature for the upstart museum which has become the jewel of western North Carolina and a starting point for many local and national events of interest to motorcycle aficionados. Over the years, we have had many occasions to interact with Dale, son Matt, and the staff at Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum. Sometimes it was delivering magazines or on one of our many visits to Maggie Valley. In May of 2012, Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum hosted the 2nd Annual Kickstart Classic. I rode my ’51 H-D Panhead and Molly drove the truck pulling our trailer in the event that anyone broke down and needed a lift. We got to know Dale, Buzz Kanter, editor of American Iron, and Pete Hill, legendary drag racer, on that ride. We rode from Maggie, up on the Parkway

to CrossRoads Harley-Davidson in North Wilkesboro and then on to the AMCA National Swap Meet in Denton, NC. I didn’t break down, but Molly did help another rider get to North Wilkesboro. While the pan didn’t break down on the 300 mile shake down, Matt did come to my rescue several times when I couldn’t persuade her to refire after a stop. After our arrival in Denton, Dale narrated the “History In Motion” parade of antique motorcycles at the event. Dale had that kind of personality that made you want to join in at whatever he was doing. He loved motorcycles and his eyes would sparkle when telling one of his stories about a new acquisition for the museum. His excitement and enthusiasm in sharing the new exhibits or bikes was infectious. He was a storyteller extraordinaire. One time when we visited DWTT museum, we were standing just inside the entrance when I mentioned to Dale that I was looking for a dash backing plate for my 51 pan. Dale smiled and reached down into a cardboard box full of assorted items and pulled the part I needed out and handed it to me. The story was that the previous owner had passed on and would be glad for me to have it. If you haven’t visited Dale’s Wheels Through Time and were expecting a sterile, pristine display of famous motorbikes, you might be taken aback when you arrive. Dale is telling the history of motorcycles at the Wheels Through Time, complete with dirt floor bike shops, hill climber display, and rusted, dusty parts and paraphernalia. Take your time to

FullThrottleMagazine.com

absorb all that the museum contains, the bikes, the motorcycle apparel, posters, toys displayed on antique cabinets, advertising signs, art, and mementoes. The real gritty tale of American motorcycles in all their glory – the war machines, the board track racers, the one of a kind machines – all have their place in the historic tale told by Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum. We believe Dale’s spirit will haunt, in a good way, the Wheels Through Time Museum for years to come as Matt and the crew of workers and volunteers carry on the vision of documenting the history of motorcycles. And, by the way, the museum isn’t called ‘the museum that runs’ for fun, their motto is: “If it doesn’t run, it’s probably out of gas.” One of our fondest memories of Dale is watching him jump start some old, rusted bike that looked like it hadn’t run in years and come roaring out from the back of the museum down the aisle and out the front doors to the amazement of the visitors! Check out WheelsThroughTime.com to view Dale’s restoration videos, information of the 2021 raffle bike, and opportunities for museum support like Dale’s Donorship program. In 2017, we became “Lifetime Donors” to help sustain long term growth of Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum and have a beautiful framed and numbered David Uhl portrait of Dale discovering a Crocker motor and a donorship certificate. His legacy will continue to “run” as Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum will reopen on April 1, 2021. We urge you to visit Maggie Valley and tour the best motorcycle -transportation museum in the country.

Smokin’ Harley-Davidson Kicks Off 2021 By Lincoln Infield

HarleyDavidson is wasting no time getting the new year started. They have the 2021 models in stock and have already hosted a few events. I made it over to their Polar Bear Cruise In Bike Show and the Polar Bear Open House. The Polar Bear Cruise In Bike show was on January 23rd and the event name matched the temps. Registration for the ride in bike show started at 10am, but with the awards being presented at 2pm, I decided to let the day warm up a little before heading out. I got over the Smokin’ H-D around noon just as the crowd was starting to roll in. I David “Wag” Wagner Won The Bike Show With His ‘97 Softail Heritage registered my Dyna for the bike show, I mean, why not! I got a few minutes to chat with David and he said he chances, but it wasn’t long before some good competition has the red and white Heritage Classic to match this one. I’m showed up. were a few vendors lined up under the canopy including Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group - The Firm That Rides, and Biker Trash Nation. I scarfed down a hot dog and then went in to see what they had going on. During the afternoon, Smokin hosted seminars in all the departments. If you were attending the seminar, you got put in a drawing for $100! I can handle that! I attended the MotorClothes® seminar and learned about some of the safety features of H-D helmets and attended the parts seminar as they covered the new 2021 Rockfort Fosgate speaker upgrades. While I didn’t win the $100 raffle on either one of these seminars, it was informative and cool to have the staff at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson interact with the attendees. Questions were asked and answers were given. It was a good day at the dealership! Keep your eye on the Smokin’ Harley-Davidson ad and the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar to make sure you don’t miss out on the events they are hosting. In the meanwhile, ride over to 3441 Myer Lee Drive in WinstonSalem, NC and check them out! You won’t be disappointed.

Custom Dynamics Seminar At Pandemonium Performance

Kary Blaylock & Shoprag By: Lincoln Infield

f you are looking to light up your ride,

Custom Dynamics has all the good stuff you are looking for, and if you are looking for Custom Dynamics, Pandemonium Performance is where you need to go. Just to make sure you get exactly what you need, Kary Blaylock of Pandemonium Performance hosted a Custom Dynamics Seminar on January 30th. Nothing that Kary does is half done, so he had the event catered with fresh made biscuits, bacon, hand pattied sausage and eggs. I snagged a hot cup of coffee as well and waited for the seminar to begin. Around 11am Custom Dynamics rep, “Shoprag,” took the floor and took us through all the latest Custom Dynamics products and detailed the upgrades all the old standard products. Twenty minutes into his presentation, I was amazed by all the cool stuff that Custom Dynamics is putting out there and had a shopping list ready for my bike. I’m not all that much into ground affects and stuff like that, but the headlight and turn signal options to help light up the road are spectacular. In particular the Adaptive headlight is a must have. The headlight senses your turn angle and the light shifts to shed light on the road where you need it. The seminar ended and “Shoprag” hung around to answer questions while a line formed at the parts department to schedule installations! If you are looking for a reputable shop to order or install your new Custom Dynamics lights, give the guys over at Pandemonium Performance at 1121 S Main Street in Lexington, NC a shout, 336- 490-0120. They can handle it for ya! Let ‘em know that Full Throttle Magazine sent ya.

EXPLORE ENDLESS HORIZONS: NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON® PAN AMERICA™ 1250 AND PAN AMERICA™ 1250 SPECIAL MOTORCYCLES DEBUT Built to Endure, Designed to Explore, and Engineered for Adventure.

MILWAUKEE (February 22, 2021) he Pan America™ motorcycle is Harley-Davidson’s explore-it-all machine for riders who see touring as detouring – on road and off. This rugged, powerful, technologically advanced multipurpose vehicle is designed from the ground up to inspire rider confidence and fuel the spirit of adventure, wherever the road may take you. Harley-Davidson has leveraged its cuttingedge design and engineering capabilities to create the Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special, all-new, adventure-touring motorcycles, each designed with premium features, outstanding performance and innovative technology. “From its inception more than a century ago, when many roads were little more than dirt trails, Harley-Davidson has stood for adventure. So I’m very proud to present Pan-America as the first adventure touring bike designed and built in America,” said Jochen Zeitz, chairman, president and CEO Harley-Davidson. “The Pan America models exude that go-anywhere spirit, shared today by riders in the US and around the globe who want to experience the world on a motorcycle.” That same adventurous spirit is deeply shared by actor and brand ambassador, Jason Momoa, who is joining creative forces with the Company to bring Pan America’s passion for adventure to the world. Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models are powered by the new 150hp Revolution® Max 1250 engine, a liquid-cooled 1,250cc-displacement V-Twin designed to offer a broad powerband that builds to a rush of high-RPM power. To minimize overall motorcycle weight (Pan America 1250 534lb. wet/Pan America 1250 Special 559lb. wet), the Revolution Max engine is integrated into the vehicle as the central member of the chassis. Pan America models are equipped with technologies designed to enhance the riding experience, including multiple electronically controlled ride modes plus Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements. This broad collection of technologies is designed to match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration and braking. The Pan America 1250 Special model is equipped with electronically adjustable semi-active front and rear suspension. As an industry-first innovation, Pan America is equipped with Adaptive Ride Height (ARH), a revolutionary new suspension

system which automatically transitions between a low stopped position and optimal ride height when the motorcycle is in motion. Harley-Davidson design and engineering teams collaborated throughout the process of creating and refining the Pan America™ 1250 and Pan America™ 1250 Special models with a vision guided by utility. Like a good multi-tool, function leads the form of these Harley-Davidson® models. From grab handles to integrated luggage mounts, to a horizontal headlamp configured to better illuminate an off-road trail, function defines style. Inspired by the spirit of rugged North American off-road versatility, the Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models stand out visually in the adventure touring landscape, with design that reflects the capability of the motorcycles. Harley-Davidson® dealers will offer a complete line of accessories for the Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models, including three durable luggage systems, and new technical riding gear for men and women developed in collaboration with respected European motorcycle apparel specialist, REV’IT!. The Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models will arrive at Harley-Davidson dealerships in Spring 2021. The riding experience is capable and intuitive, on a motorcycle that stays composed and confident wherever your adventure takes you. Optimized Chassis A focus on performance and minimizing weight drove both vehicle and engine architecture, material choices, and aggressive component design optimization, all with the goal of achieving a desirable power-to-weight ratio. The powertrain is a stressed member of the chassis, eliminating the traditional frame. Three distinct elements – the front frame, the mid frame and the tail section – bolt directly to the powertrain. This design reduces motorcycle weight and results in a stiff chassis that contributes to precise handling. The cast-aluminum swingarm minimizes unsprung weight. The chassis is designed with a 62.2inch wheelbase, ideal for touring capability (especially with a passenger and loaded luggage) and agile handling required for off-road maneuverability. Cast aluminum wheels (19-inch front and a 17-inch rear) are designed to be strong, yet light weight, intended for use on paved roads and un-paved surfaces, such as gravel roads and fire roads. Harley-Davidson and Michelin collaboratively designed a Scorcher Adventure tire for the Pan America models to meet the demands associated with adventure touring. Michelin Anakee Wild tires with an aggressive “knobby” tread pattern will be offered through Harley-Davidson® Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories for riders seeking maximum offroad traction and a bold style profile. Brembo® Braking Harley-Davidson and Brembo collaborated on an all-new braking system for the Pan America™ models that is designed to provide the rider with outstanding braking feel and performance. A new radial monoblock four-piston (30 mm) caliper takes full advantage of the material characteristics to increase stiffness while reducing overall weight. Dual front brake rotors are 320mm in diameter; single rear-brake rotor is 280mm diameter. A new lightweight front brake master cylinder offers adjustable lever response. Adjustable Suspension The Pan America 1250 model features premium passive front and rear suspension that is fully adjustable for pre-load and compression/rebound damping. Suspension travel front and rear is 7.48 inches (190mm). Front suspension is provided by a SHOWA® 1 by 1 47mm inverted cartridge fork. Rear suspension is a SHOWA® Piggyback reservoir shock with adjustable hydraulic preload. The rear suspension incorporates

a linkage system which provides a progressive feel through the stroke and maintains a comfortable, compliant ride on-road, while providing superior support for off-road conditions. Touchscreen Display All instrumentation and infotainment functions are displayed on a tilting 6.8-inch TFT touchscreen (thin-film-transistor, a type of liquid-crystal display noted for high image quality and contrast). Its non-reflective glass cover makes it easier to view in most lighting conditions. The touchscreen function is disabled when the motorcycle is in motion, but the rider can use hand controls to manage many functions of the screen display when the motorcycle is moving. The display supports infotainment generated by the rider’s Bluetooth-equipped mobile device, including music and calls. Navigation is supplied by the free Harley-Davidson® App for iOS or Android. (See Pan America 1250/Special Tech release for complete details) Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements The Pan America 1250 model is equipped with Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements, a collection of technologies designed enhance rider confidence during unexpected situations or poor road conditions. The systems are electronic and utilize the latest chassis control, electronic brake control and powertrain technology. Cornering enhanced technology utilizes an inertial measurement unit, IMU, for optimal intervention when the motorcycle is leaned compared to when the motorcycle is upright. Elements of Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements for the Pan America 1250 model include: Cornering Enhanced Electronically Linked Braking, Cornering Enhanced Antilock Continued On Page 24

Continued From Page 22 Braking System, Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System, Cornering “ Enhanced Drag-Torque Slip Control System, and Hill Hold Control. Ride Modes Selectable Ride Modes electronically control the performance characteristics of the motorcycle, and the level of technology intervention. Five modes are available on the base model (4 are pre-programmed and one can be customized). The Pan America™ 1250 Special model has two additional modes that can be customized by the owner. Pre-programed ride modes for the Pan America 1250 models include Road, Sport, Rain, Off-Road and Off-Road Plus. Each Ride Mode consists of a specific combination of power delivery, engine braking, Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS) and Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS) settings. The rider may use the MODE button on the right-hand controller to change the active ride mode while riding the motorcycle or when stopped, with some exceptions. Additional Pan America™ 1250 Model Features • The lightweight exhaust system is crafted from corrosionresistant 304-series stainless steel and designed to meet global emissions (including Euro V) and sound regulations without compromising durability or the performance experienced by the rider. The catalyst is located as close to the engine as possible to minimize its size and weight and also keep heat away from the rider. A pair of mufflers – one below the engine and the second on the right side of the motorcycle – adds volume to the exhaust system, which allows effective sound muffling with minimal back pressure, which improves performance. The exhaust system is designed to create clearance under the motorcycle to limit potential impact damage during off-road riding, and to not compromise lean angle. • The rider portion of the seat has a high and low position which allows the rider to achieve a better fit on the motorcycle. Seat height adjustment does not require tools. Unladen seat height is 34.2 inches in the low position and 35.2 inches in the high position. • A four-position windscreen can be adjusted with one hand, using a lever adjacent to the display screen, through a range of 1.8 inches to best match rider stature, preference or changing environmental conditions. • Cruise control is standard equipment. • A lightweight aluminum fuel tank holds 5.6 gallons for extended riding range. The fuel filler is located forward on the

top of the tank so it will not be covered by most tank bags, making it easier to fuel up with a bag in place. The fuel tank is shaped to optimize the capacity of the engine intake airbox, which is located below the tank. • The Pan America™ 1250 model features allLED lighting designed to deliver signature style and outstanding performance with and additional focus on rugged durability in the off-road environment. The Daymaker® Signature LED headlamp has been designed using new photometric analysis technology to produce outstanding “punch” down the road with a very homogenous spread of light; eliminating distracting “hot spots.” • The front turn signals are positioned to be protected by the brush guard during off-road riding. • Paint Color: Vivid Black, River Rock Gray with Medallion PAN AMERICA 1250 SPECIAL Model The Pan America 1250 Special model is a premium adventure touring motorcycle loaded with the following additional exclusive features: • Semi-Active Front and Rear Suspension with Vehicle Load Control The Pan America™ 1250 Special model is equipped with electronically adjustable semi-active front and rear suspension. Utilizing data provided by sensors on the motorcycle, this suspension system automatically controls damping to suit the prevailing conditions and riding activity. These suspension components are provided by SHOWA, while the control software was developed by Harley-Davidson. The Vehicle Loading Control system senses the weight of the rider, a passenger and luggage to select optimal suspension sag by automatically adjusting rear preload. Unladen seat height is 33.4 inches in the low position and 34.4 inches in the high position. • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) The TPMS displays current front and rear tire pressure on the on the color display screen and displays an indicator to alert the rider when tire pressure is low, and the pressure should be checked. Maintaining proper tire air pressure is important both for vehicle performance and tire life. • Center Stand The center stand supports the parked motorcycle in an upright position. With the center stand deployed the parked motorcycle takes up less space than it would leaning on its side stand, a benefit when garage space is tight. The stand also raises the rear wheel off the ground to facilitate maintenance Continued On Page 26

Continued From Page 24 and tire changes, at home or in the backcountry. • Multi-Position Rear Brake Pedal Without using tools, the rear-brake foot pedal height can be changed between two positions to improve control and comfort when the rider is standing. Standing while riding through off-road terrain can improve control of the motorcycle and improve rider’s vision of the trail ahead. • Brush Guard Tubular steel brush guards are designed to protect the radiator and help support the motorcycle in a tip-over event. • Aluminum Skid Plate This rugged skid plate is designed to protect the engine crankcase from impacts. • Daymaker® Signature Adaptive Headlamp Advanced Daymaker® Adaptive Headlamp technology utilizes the ABS IMU to determine the lean angle of the motorcycle and automatically project additional light into corners to illuminate areas of the road that may be unlit by an LED headlamp without this technology. This may give the rider more confidence on dark roads. • The system includes three LED elements per side, located just above the main Daymaker headlamp. • The adaptive lamps illuminate in sequence based on motorcycle lean angle, at 8 degrees, 15 degrees and 23 degrees. • Rather than just switching on and off, the current to the adaptive elements ramps up gradually so the additional lighting is progressive and appears almost seamless to the rider. • The system functions when the headlight is in either highbeam or low-beam mode. • Heated Hand Grips and Hand Wind Deflectors Both provide added comfort when riding in cool weather. Heated grips have three temperature settings, selected with a button on the hand control. • Steering Damper A steering damper enhances dynamic performance during aggressive off-road riding. • Factory Installed Option: Adaptive Ride Height Harley-Davidson is the first to offer this technology in the motorcycle industry, and Adaptive Ride Height (ARH) is an option for the Pan America™ 1250 Special model only. Adaptive Ride Height unlocks confidence you can feel in different scenarios by enabling a lower seat height when the motorcycle is at rest, without compromising ground clearance in motion. This revolutionary suspension system automatically transitions the motorcycle between a low stopped position and

optimal ride height when the motorcycle is in motion. The system allows the rider to mount the Pan America 1250 Special model with ease, and facilitates placing feet down to the ground at a stop, by lowering the seat height 1 to 2 inches (depending on automatically selected rear pre-load, which determines ride height when the bike is moving). Unladen seat height is 32.7 inches in the low position and 33.7 inches in the high position. ARH retains all of the features of the semi-active front and rear suspension. • ARH does not compromise suspension travel – full travel is always maintained – and does not compromise lean angle, ground clearance or ride quality. • There are four selectable Adaptive Ride Height sub-modes: • Auto Mode: The system determines how quickly to lower the suspension based on how aggressive the braking action is, with the target of having the suspension fully lowered when the bike comes to a stop. • Short Delay and Long Delay Modes: In these modes the lowering function is delayed until the motorcycle comes to a stop, so that full ride height is maintained while the motorcycle is moving at low speeds, such as when negotiating a parking lot. • Locked Mode: The Adaptive Ride Height system will always maintain the normal ride height and does not lower at a stop. This mode might be selected by a tall rider who does not need Adaptive Ride Height to be flat footed at a stop, or for off-road riding when full ride height is desirable at low speeds. • Factory Installed Option: Tubeless Laced Wheels The stainless-steel spokes are inserted through the aluminum wheel rim outside of the tire bead. These wheels offer the rider several advantages over the cast wheels in off-road conditions. • This design allows the use of a tubeless tire, which eliminates the weight of an inner tube. • The spokes are repairable in the field without removing the wheel from the motorcycle or removing the tire from the wheel. • The laced wheels look both rugged and high-tech. • Paint Colors: Vivid Black; Gauntlet Gray Metallic; Deadwood Green (available in select international markets only); two-tone Baja Orange and Stone Washed White Pearl; all with Split Graphic Learn more about the Harley-Davidson® Pan America™ 1250 and Pan America™ 1250 Special models at www.harleydavidson.com.

it. Always remember that this whole thing started with a dream and a mouse.” Walt E. Disney This article is about a special girl named Kyra Lovell. She is the 11 year old daughter of Nikki and Nathan Lovell. Nikki and Nathan are members of the Blazing Skeleton Riding Club out of Sylva, NC. At Kyra’s birthday party on February 7th, she was presented with a vest and became a Jr. Skeleton. Kyra is the perfect example of a strong, tough, determined young lady. Her goal in life is to one day visit Paris. She also wants to be a missionary and spread her love for Jesus. Her mother stated that she also wants to be a Doctor herself one day so that she can help others. “She just wants to tell her story”, Nikki said. If there is one thing I know for sure, it’s that sharing her story with the biker community is one of the best places to share it. Being a fellow biker, hopefully one day we will see little Kyra riding her own motorcycle and further inspiring others.

Kyra Becoming A Jr. Skeleton

Kyra And Her Dad Nathan Lovell Ready For The Christmas Parade Despite many challenges Kyra is facing, she is an amazing little girl. Kyra has an autoimmune disorder. She had surgery on February 17th to remove a tumor from her ear drum. This is one of many surgeries she has had and is facing many more. Due to complications from this disorder, she has suffered conductive hearing loss and will require hearing aids soon. Her mother Nikki said that the Doctors are saying Kyra’s condition is a mystery. They are constantly monitoring her and doing testing. Nikki stated that Kyra does not like talking about her condition. She does not want others to look at her sympathetically. If you are ever at an event in WNC, and see the Blazing Skeleton RC, look for Jr. Skeleton, Kyra, the newest member of the biker community. There is no doubt you will be inspired by the courage and strength of this young lady. She is super excited to have her very own article and could not deserve it more. I look forward to seeing her at many forthcoming events.

Safe Riding In 2021

By: WildThing pring is upon us here in the

Carolinas and our thoughts naturally turn to hitting the open road for 2021’s adventures to enjoy. Daytona Bike Week, (March 5-14), is the starting gun for motorcycle snow birds to hit the beaches of sunny Florida to savor the wind in your hair and the sun on you back again. The sober minded motorcycle enthusiast, while relishing the warm months of riding, also has safety in mind. He/she checks gear, tends to the motorcycle’s maintenance needs as preparation for the first rides of spring. But what about the newbie’s? I don’t mean that term meanly, but as much as I enjoy motorcycling, there must be a whole new batch of excited potential riders out there wanting to get started. My advice has always been – take a motorcycle safety course, it will show you how to stay alive.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation is the place to start. Their adage is, “Safe riding depends as much on the mental skills of awareness and judgment as it does on the physical

skill of maneuvering the machine. These skills are perishable and need renewal and lifelong commitment”. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation® is the internationally recognized developer of the comprehensive, research-based, Rider Education and Training System (RETS). RETS curricula promotes lifelong-learning for motorcyclists and continuous professional development for certified Rider Coaches(SM) and other trainers. MSF also actively participates in government relations, safety research, public awareness campaigns and the provision of technical assistance to state training and licensing programs. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation is a national, not-for-profit organization sponsored by BMW, BRP, HarleyDavidson, Honda, Indian Motorcycle, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha. ing of all the types of rider training classes available, as well as instructor courses. They even have a dirt bike course, a scooter course, and one specifically for military. Also, you can find out course providers near you. What a great resource to avail yourself of on some snowy night and plan your future motorcycle adventure. For the already licensed rider, there are several levels of experienced rider’s refreshers. As a prerequisite to the Basic Rider Course, there is a Basic e-course to prepare you for the class. The cost for the e-course is $20, but Triumph Motorcycles has partnered with MSF to assist prospective riders. Triumph has launched the website TriumphRider.com, where prospective riders may complete a form to be emailed a unique promo code, which can be applied when they register on the MSF website to redeem the free Basic e-course, compliments of Triumph. What a way to extend a welcoming hand to those new to riding! Be Safe in 2021!

How Do You Want To Be Remembered? Do You Want To Be Remembered? 1. Way you look? 2. Way you talk? 3. Way you act? 4. What kind of bike you have or how many bikes you owned? 5. Or what you do for God? What have you done this week or even today that was pleasing to God? Have you told anyone that you love them or better yet, that Jesus does? I like to sit around at the swap meets or any biker events and just watch how people dress and act. Every place you go, there are different people. Have you ever thought to yourself, “I hope I don’t look or act like that when I am out in the world?” I don’t think some women have mirrors in their room or they wouldn’t come out the door looking like they do, (or did they just not care?). When you set up at a swap meet or any kind of bike event, you have your Bibles and tracts out and are talking to each other; do you ever take that step and ask someone if they need prayer or someone to talk to? Do you tell them what Jesus has done for you? Just look around at all the faces; some are smiling, and some are sad. There are a lot of hurting people out there, just needow

ing someone to talk to. Just remember when you go somewhere to minister, remember why you are there. If God tells you to go somewhere or to speak to someone, you best do it. God will give us choices and it’s up to us what we do with them. I want God to remember me as being obedient to Him. You can be quiet and listen to Him or you can listen to your mouth; see which one works. We have free will. God doesn’t want puppets. He wants children who love Him so much that they want to follow Him. Hebrews 5:8 “Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things He suffered. Isaiah 1:19. “If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land;”

7th Annual Eli-Celebration of Life

I met a man who I had seen before at other events. He is a Combat Vets Supporter and rides a Victory bagger painted gray with purple accents. It’s hard to forget that bike! We had a very pleasant conversation – mostly about Victory motorcycles. I learned that he mounted a car tire on the back of his bike. He said that it was a little different in the turns but not dangerous. I went to a narrower, more rounded tire in the back of “Miss Vickie” to help in cornering. I think that I will continue with the bike tires. I walked over to the rest of the group to get some pictures when I saw another Victory roll in. The rider is a real character who wore a “Joker’s Cap”. Everybody knew him and liked him. I learned that he was a veteran amputee who really loves his Victory. At a little after noon, all were called to the outside dining area for a group picture, and a talk. A man spoke for a while about Eli, and all the good the Eli Celebration of Life has done over the years. Then there was a short prayer. At about 12:30, the bikes started to roar again as everybody was getting ready to leave on their way to the Greenville Shrine Club and Event Center where there would be food, a live auction featuring Pal and Charlie, and live music by The James Radford Band along with the gun raffle and door prizes. They didn’t try to get out onto Woodruff Road because of all the traffic. It’s a very busy road. The group left by going through a couple adjacent parking lots to get out onto a less congested road. I’ll watch for next year’s Eli Celebration of Life. I’ll definitely go again. The biker community never stops amazing me. They will always come out to support a family in need.

Baby Addy

By: Wally Wersching li-Celebration of Life was created to promote an annual benefit each year in loving memory of Eli. A tragic accident took his life on August 4, 2011. He was exactly 2 years, 6 months, and 1 day old. He lost his life by a fallen tree. Each year on or near his birthday, his life is celebrated by coming together as friends, as bikers, and even strangers to raise money for a local child in need – a different one each year. This year, it’s for Addison (Addy) Carr, a 9 month old baby girl who has HIE. HIE is Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy: Hypoxic (lack of oxygen); Ischemic (restricting blood flow); Encephalopathy (affecting the brain). Birth asphyxia often causes HIE, a form of neonatal brain damage that can lead to cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and other disabilities. This year it was held on Saturday, February 6th starting at The House-Divided Bar and Grill in Greenville, SC at 1659 Woodruff Rd with Kick Stands Up at 12:30PM. I watched the weather predictions all week. When I awoke on Saturday morning, I was surprised to see the sun shining in a bright blue sky. It was frigid though with temps in the high 20’s. I was considering riding “Miss Vickie” to the event. After watching the weather on TV, I decided that I would drive rather than ride. I left Shelby at about 9:30am heading south on I-85. I noticed that the DOT had already spread brine on the roadway in preparation for the winter storm approaching. I exited at Rte. 14 south until I turned right onto Woodruff Road. The HouseDivided Bar and Grille was a few miles on the right. After I parked, I walked in, and placed a stack of the Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines on the registration table. Then I gave a donation for Addy. I was told that Addy was there at a table with her parents. I walked over to talk with them. I learned that she is doing much better after they took her for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in New Orleans. HBOT is a medical treatment that enhances the body’s natural healing processes. I was glad to hear that there’s hope for the little one. I also learned that their insurance company will not pay for the treatments. It’s a “quality of life” situation, not life threatening. The inside of the bar was crowded with people dedicated to the memory of little Eli. I walked outside to talk with the bikers who rode. There were more and more rumbling in every minute. Some had their sound system so loud that we couldn’t hear their loud exhaust.

Benefit And Memorial Ride For Wayne Hill Wayne Hll Doing A Burnout At Double D Burnout Saloon In 2018

By: Lloyd and Rose, and Kady Hill he Biker Family lost a brother on Dec. 29, 2020. Wayne Hill left behind his children, family, many friends and biker nation to go be with his wife Diane, his father, and his dog Jake at their eternal home. He had a contagious smile with an infectious spirit and a heart for helping others, as he spent many of his days cooking warm meals for the South Side Mission in High Point, NC which is an organization that helps the homeless. Wayne has helped many people from all walks of life, he never judged them for who they were, he just knew they were in need. Wayne had a passion for riding and had seen many miles of this earth while doing so. He loved to ride, whether it was horses or motorcycles for pleasure, his big-rig for work, his farming tractor around the house, or rides for charity events. For over 20 years Wayne welcomed hundreds of friends and strangers, some locally and some out of state to join him at his home to celebrate his annual Archdale-Trinity Oyster Roast for a night of music and food. This was his way of uniting the community, as he never met a stranger. Wayne loved life, Budweiser, and some good shine but he especially loved his children, momma, family, friends, and everyone in between. A special story the family would like to share is a few weeks prior to Wayne’s passing, he was able to watch his daughter be proposed to and he was told he was going to have his first grandbaby from his son. Wayne had been patiently waiting for both and could not have been more excited. He truly passed a happy man. Wayne’s family who loves and miss him dearly would like to say on his behalf to live every day like it’s your last, help others who are in need and “ride on” biker nation. On February 6th, bikers got together at JR’s Corner Tav-

So many were involved, from the cook to the ones serving and cleaning, and all the donations. There was a food collection, and all left over food was given to South Side Mission. There is no way to thank everyone individually, just know in your heart, Wayne saw it all and we will ride together again.

PGR Mission For Charles (Chuck) Augur By: Wally Wersching

PGR Mission for Charles (Chuck) Augur on February 10th. There were two stages of the mission. The first was to meet at 11:30am at the Wood Mortuary in Greer, SC, and escort Chuck and the family to the Graceland East Memorial Park, at 2206 Woodruff Rd., in Simpsonville, SC. The other was at the cemetery at 1:00pm – to stand a flag line for the cryptside service. I decided to go directly to the cemetery. After I saw Chuck’s picture in his obituary, I recognized him as a man I talked with at another PGR Mission last year. He was a long time member of the South Carolina Patriot Guard Riders. Chuck was born in 1952, and probably missed the draft because when he turned 18, the Vietnam War was almost over. Even though he didn’t serve in the military, he was definitely a patriot because he belonged to many patriotic organizations like the Sons of The American Revolution/Daniel Morgan Chapter; and The Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War/ Gibbon Burke NC Camp #2. He was also a religious man who belonged to the Christian Motorcycle Association/Greenville Gospel Riders along with being a member of the Upstate Gospel Pickers. He attended weekly services at the Covenant United Methodist Church in Greer under Reverend Darren Hook. I checked the weather before I left home. It was in the lower 50’s and sunny. It wasn’t supposed to rain until the evening. I decided to bundle up, and ride “Miss Vickie”. I wore a long sleeved white shirt and my black leather vest under my jacket. The vest is getting tight due to my “pandemic paunch”. I’ll have to work on that! I rode south until I got onto I-85 heading to Greenville, SC. I-85 is a mess. There’s a lot of construction, and lane shifting. The road surface is really treacherous because of the ruts that was invited to a

Chuck Augur cross the lanes on an angle. I exited at Rte. 14, and headed south. I stopped for gas, and on my way out of the building, I met Jeff on his Harley. He was getting gas, too. We talked for a few minutes. He wanted to know about the PGR because he wanted to do something to help, and show reverence to the military even though he hadn’t served himself. I gave him a couple magazines and my card if he had any trouble joining the PGR. I continued heading south on Rte. 14, and after crossing Woodruff Road, I turned left into the Graceland East Memorial, and parked around the back of the main building. I started to walk to the front, and heard the rumble of motorcycles. The group was coming in. I stopped to take a few pictures as they arrived. Many were flying large flags on their bikes. They all parked in front of the building. I was quickly given a flag to be part of the flag line, and stood next to the building near the door. We all saluted as members of the South Carolina PGR lifted Chuck out of the hearse onto the dolly, and then wheeled him into the building. The casket had no flag draped over it, but had a beautiful large bouquet of dark red roses. After the casket was moved to the head of the room, we all walked in, and stood in a flag line against the walls, and waited for the service to begin. Reverend Hook started the service at exactly 1:00pm. Reverend Hook had only known Chuck for the past four years, but he told stories about how much Chuck was liked. Then the Upstate Gospel Pickers played a couple hymns. After Reverend Hook was through, the PGR Ride Captain, India Rackley, presented Rosemary (Chuck’s wife of over 40 years) a folded American flag. During the presentation, they

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

were both crying. I couldn’t hear what was said but I could see the emotion. At about 1:30pm, the service was over, and everybody was escorted out of the building. I walked to my bike to get some of Carolinas’ Full magazines. In my stack of current Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines, I also brought a couple from October 2020 because it had the article, I wrote about the last PGR Mission where I had seen Chuck. I gave one to India because she was Ride Captain then, too and the other to a young lady with her dog who was also on that PGR Mission. I left at about 1:45 heading north on Rte. 14. The ride on Rte. 14 was very pleasant. It’s mostly two lane and winding. When I got to I-85, there wasn’t much traffic at first, but the wind had picked up. Even though “Miss Vickie” weighs over 600 lbs., the wind can move her around. The closer I got to the construction around Spartanburg the heavier the traffic got. The eighteen wheelers and the crosswinds made the ride home challenging. I got home about 3:00pm – in time to walk the dog.

Quinton’s Ride By: Gary Steelman

Keith Bills and a few of our friends at Tilley HD in Statesville, NC on Saturday, 1-23-2021 for a ride. There were over 85 bikes sitting around the parking lot, waiting. The escorts arrived and instructions were given along with a reminder of why we were riding today. Quinton Turpin (2/16/2013 - 1/15/2021) was a seven year old little boy. He loved hanging with his dad and the Harley, going to school, and being a seven year old. Quinton had a battle with cancer going on all the while, and finally lost his life to the sickness. RIP Quinton. The ride through the countryside to Walmart in Conover was chilly and bright, sunshine belied the temps. There were well over 200 more bikes awaiting us at Walmart. The group rolled into Taylorsville overtaking the city square and streets. What a sight! It seemed like there were a thousand bikes surrounding the little town. Quinton would have been so excited at the sight and sound of all these bikes. The funeral procession was a somewhat more somber affair, until the signal was given for a sound off. Bikers twisted the et up with

Riders Signing the Ride Banner

Event Organizers Lisa and Kieith Bills throttle on hundreds of bikes at once, filling the air with good vibes and a fond farewell to the little man. The small graveyard was filled with well-wishers, there to support the family and friends. The ride ended with smiles and a few tears, smiles at the support and tears mourning the loss of Quinton, thoughts and prayers to the family. Till we all meet again.

Down & Dirty Drag Racing – Gettin’ It Done Dirty

L-R: Martin Blaylock, Kary Blaylock, Little Dave Herndon, Josh, Elisa, Just Joe ing Team was ready with fresh blood, fresh oil, and a fresh perspective - ready to rock and roll down the quarter mile of chaos and speed.

Dirty Drag Racing Team and Pandemonium Performance would love to, first thing, show some love to all our special advocates, backers, and promoters out there. Your support means a great deal to all of us involved. own and

Little Dave Herndon: Every team needs a heartbeat to keep the energy circulating, and Down and Dirty has a strong one in main pilot, David Herndon. Little Dave raced with Down and Dirty Drag Racing out of Easy Eddie’s Motorcycle Shop in Huntersville, NC. Growth and good times were going down at the strip, and we all know how this life can go - sometimes, just the moment the plan-once-dreamed starts to finally take shape in the present, an instant in time and choices of others create a different journey than what was planned, and even though the heartbeat skips for a minute, it is just gathering strength for round two, a new path. Little Dave was involved in a horrific accident caused by a texting driver; this tragedy left him in pretty bad shape for quite a while but most certainly not devoid of heart nor spirit. After a three-year recuperation, the heartbeat was back to thumpin’ strong, and the two-wheeled shenanigans once again commenced. Agreeing to return to the strip, Down and Dirty Drag Racing partnered with Pandemonium Performance Custom Cycles. Tired of all the speeding-tickets-as-trophies, the newly revamped drag team took a good dose of pure pandemonium from the street to the strip. It was not long and, your Down and Dirty Drag Rac-

Pandemonium Performance: Steeped in speed, Kary Blaylock and his crew at Pandemonium Performance churn out powerhouse machines on a weekly basis for clients who like to get to the good times quick and in a hurry like. With more than fifteen years’ experience behind the wrenches and specialty tools, Kary brings a certain wise spice to the cycle lift. His hand-selected and personallytrained crew has been educated and cultured within the strictest Harley-Davidson-specific standards and nothing less will fly. With the combined thrust of wisdom through experience, cutting-edge technology, and tried-and-true secrets wielded to crank out larger than life power, the collective knowledge at Pandemonium Performance brings the fuel straight to the fire. Collaborating with Kary Blaylock and the Pandemonium Performance crew, this reincarnation of the Down and Dirty Drag team, much like drag racing itself, was born on America’s local backroads; there is big world power with the hometown feel, and Little Dave and company pack that trailer with love for home and family every trip to the strip – their spirits grateful for life, each other, and the sweetness of speed. After much abstracting, the team formulated and fabricated three top-notch performers; three absolute, shoot-em-up, cowboy outlaws have been built to give the competition a little something to contend with:

The Magic Purple Rain: 1998 1200 S Sportster dripping with speed, rolling with Harley thunder and H.P. just a hair above a feather Up in Smoke: 2009 Fat Bob oozing rip-roaring power boasting H.P. Out of this world The Beast: 2006 Ultra Classic exudes excellence and Ungodly H.P First Season Blues Thanks to the archnemesis (He-Who-Must-Not-BeNamed…yeah right…), COVID19, and the pitfalls of 2020, the season of the AMRA sanction was cut abruptly short. The Down and Dirty Drag Team finished out nicely on race one, Daytona, which was, unfortunately, the only race. Rider, Little Dave Herndon finished second place over-all in the Bagger Class - an extraordinarily strong start to a much-too-short season. The team has used this one-run preview as a glimpse into the possibilities, and the future looks blinding-speed bright. The gears of the mind and the wrenches of the shop are probably turning as you read these words. Speed is in the veins, and it never sleeps. Support: The privilege of creating and running the team to victory could not be possible without the backing of some local businesses around these parts. Big shout out to Koyote Ugly bar and music venue of Salisbury, North Carolina for the stellar promotions as well as Lexington Tire and Automotive and the major support shown from the guys and gals over at the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Special thanks to the guys out at CNS Swingarms, too. With the roots deep and still producing with gusto, we would love to see the local tracks, and drag racing in general, rock and roll itself back to the way it was when it all began in the 50’s; a huge draw and regular beat for good ole boys and gals to have a rip-roarin’ time on a Friday night, right in the middle of the fastest lane - where chaos meets the strip. Nam Knights Of America MC Moonshine Chapter Bike Raffle By: Lincoln Infield he Nam Knights of America MC Moonshine Chapter raffled off a 2012 HarleyDavidson 1200 Custom Sportster on December 18, 2020. The bike was donated to the chapter and they used it to raise funds to give back to the community. They wanted to raffle the bike off before Christmas and in just 4 months the members were able to sell 210 of the 250 $50 tickets. Falling just 40 tickets short of their goal. “If we had another month we could have done it”, Moonshine Chapter President, “Outkast” said in regard to selling all 250 tickets. The local sheriff’s department drew the winning ticket for the Nam Knights on a Facebook Live feed. Phillip Caperton of Columbia, TN had been traveling through Columbia, SC and stopped by an event where the Moonshine Chapter were selling tickets at and bought the winning ticket. They delivered the 1200 custom to Phillip

It was a good road trip with the brothers, ya know, just hanging out. We trailered the bike over to Tennessee, just a turn and burn kind of thing” Outkast said. All proceeds went to local Columbia, SC area veteran and law enforcement programs. On top of this raffle, the Nam Knights Moonshine Chapter is donating an average of $1300 back to the community per month. Not bad for a chapter that is just over 1 year old. Congratulations to Philip. I’m sure you are enjoying your $50 Harley-Davidson! A huge thanks also goes out to “Outkast” and the members of the Moonshine Chapter of the Nam Knights of America for looking out for their community.

Indian Motorcycle: 120 Years of America’s First Motorcycle Company 2nd Edition Officially Licensed Anniversary Edition

his officially licensed

120th anniversary edition of Indian Motorcycle tells the complete story of Indian Motorcycle, America’s first massproduced motorcycle maker, from its start as a bicycle manufacturer to the purchase of the brand by Polaris Industries in 2011 and the subsequent new Indian motorcycles—updated to include new photography, the story of the latest models, including the FTR1200, Chieftain, Challenger, and Roadmaster, and Indian Motorcycle’s return to racing. In the early years of the 20th century, Indian Motorcycle dominated the world’s racetracks and showrooms, earning the brand a worldwide reputation for quality, performance, reliability, and technical innovation with such classic machines as the Chief, Scout and

Four. But the once-mighty company fell on hard times and in 1953 was forced to file bankruptcy. The Indian Motorcycle brand never quite died, however, thanks in large part to fanatically devoted enthusiasts, who tried to resurrect it for over half a century. Finally, Polaris, maker of the highly regarded Victory brand of motorcycles, purchased the brand and released the Chief and Scout, models that once again restored Indian Motorcycle to its rightful place in the motorcycle pantheon. Indian Motorcycle is the most complete and up-to-date history of this classic American motorcycle. The author, Darwin Holmstrom has written, co-written, or contributed to more than thirty books on subjects ranging from motorcycles and muscle cars to Gibson Les Paul guitars. He is a former senior editor at Motorbooks and former midwestern editor for Motorcyclist magazine.

Resurrecting A Fake

XR-1000

By: LDH

H-D has a rich legacy of flat-track victories all across this country. As a youth of 12, I was fascinated to watch the sweet controlled sliding and was even more impressed to learn that many of the bikes did not even have brakes (compression on a real flat-tracker will slow it down perfectly well). So, I set out to build a street-tracker in the manner of old vintage XR-750s that brought about so many victories for H-D. The donor bike was a sad affair indeed. It was a Craigslist special, and it came with the promise that “it ran fine when I drove it last.” To call this 1982 Ironhead Sportster a “basket-case” would have been stretching the truth, but it was a starting point. After gathering the proper pieces from Phil Little Racing (fiberglass body parts, bull-horn bars, etc.), the first road test was carried out. Alas, it was smoking like a BBQ Continued On Page 58

Continued From Page 56 grill and spewing oil from the flywheel timing port that blew out. A wine cork was shoved into that opening just to get it home. Upon disassembly, one wristpin retainer clip had been omitted by whomever molested the engine last; the wristpin had migrated laterally and gouged a nice canal into the side of one bore whereby the jug literally had to be cut and chiseled away. Consequently, a full engine rebuild was performed by Dan Whitfield (Greensboro), a former test driver and instructor at Harley in PA. Jim Blair in High Point did the crank balancing, and Rob Faria in Thomasville was the wheelwright for 19-inch rims front and back. This is all known as ‘mission-creep’ or ‘budget-busting’ as many of us know. The bike is not and never will be a flat-tracker. That kind of set-up is a whole lot different than this rig, having the original steering geometry. And it’s not really an XR either. It’s a barely legal street-tracker with tiny turn signals that can get you killed quickly. But it looks mighty fetchin,’ sounds wonderful, and does well at shows. My favorite part is the occasional adventure in the dirt. At 65 years of age now, my bravery has waned, and I’m now terribly allergic to pain. Nonetheless, I will still throw it sideways; all it takes is a dare. “Hold my beer and watch this” !

House of Representatives Fails to Pass Profiling Resolution Motorcycle Riders Foundation, MRF.org n January 3rd the 117th Congress was sworn in and all bills and resolutions not agreed to from 20192020 must be reintroduced. The MRF is disappointed that, despite over 130 bipartisan cosponsors, House leadership failed to bring this the motorcyclist profiling resolution, H. Res. 255, to the floor for a vote. The issue of motorcyclist profiling continues to gain traction on Capitol Hill and the growth in cosponsors over the last 5-years is a testament to the work of individual MRF members and state motorcycle rights organizations. The first version of the resolution introduced during the 114th Congress had only 18 cosponsors. Two years later the version before the 115th Congress had 37 cosponsors while this version had 139 cosponsors. Additionally, the Highway Reauthorization bill that passed the House in July of 2020 included language that focused on motorcyclists profiling. Despite this setback our champions on Capitol Hill remain in the fight. The leadership of the House Motorcycle Caucus has already reached out to the MRF about plans to reintroduce the profiling resolution in early 2021. The MRF remains committed to seeing the House of Representatives do what the

AMA National and Regional News ASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced a Notice of Public Rulemaking regarding labels on E15 fuel dispensers. In the notice, the EPA proposed two changes to the current E15 fuel pump labels. The first is modification of the current label, and the second is removal of the label altogether. However, there would still be a label on the pumps, as required by the Federal Trade Commission. The EPA’s modified label proposal contains these possible changes: • Removing the “Attention” stripe along the upper right corner of the label. • Removing the phrase “E15” from the label, while including the language “contains up to 15% percent ethanol.” • Revising the language “Use only in” to “Safe for use in.” • Revising the language “Don’t use in” to “Avoid use in.”

63

• Revising the format of the word “prohibited” so it is not in bold and italicized type. The AMA believes either option holds potential harm for riders, whose motorcycles and ATVs are not EPA-certified to use fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol by volume (E10).

From The MRF Biker Bulletin: he Motorcycle Riders Foundation, (MRF.org) announced last month, Sherman “Sherm” Packard was elected Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Sherm has been a state legislator in New Hampshire since 1990 and a long-time champion for motorcyclists. In recognition of his longtime work on behalf of the New Hampshire Motorcyclist Rights Organization and all riders across the country Sherm was inducted into the MRF Hall of Fame in 2018. MRF President Kirk “Hardtail” Willard, said “As one of the original motorcyclist rights activists in our movement and a MRF Hall of Famer, Lifetime Achievement honoree and John “Farmer” Eggers award recipient I cannot think of a better individual to represent New Hampshire and all motorcyclists than Sherm.” Sherm isn’t heading just any legislative body either, he’s heading one with a massive number of members. The New Hampshire House of Representatives is the largest lower chamber in any statehouse with 400 elected members. It’s also the 4th largest legislative body in the English-speaking world! It falls behind only the House of Commons in the United Kingdom (650 members), the Lok Shabha of India (543 members) and the United States House of Representatives (435 members).

church members who hadn’t been to service lately. He went to the first lady’s house and knocked on the door. When she answered the door, she said, “Conway Twitty!” “No ma’am,” he replied. “I’m your new pastor, and I came to have prayer with you.” So she said come right on in. He visited several more homes, and everyone thought he was Conway Twitty. Then he came to a young widow woman’s house on the end of the street. She was taking a shower at the time, so she just wrapped a towel around her and opened the door. When she saw her caller, she threw up her hands, which allowed the towel to fall to the floor. “Oh my God!” she exclaimed. “It’s Conway Twitty!” And the preacher said. “Hello, Darlin’!”

After they get to his house, he falls down another four times getting him to the door. Father Murphy walks into a pub in Donegal, and asks the first man he meets, “Do you want to go to heaven?” The man said, “I do, Father.” The priest said, “Then stand over there against the wall.” Then the priest asked the second man, “Do you want to go to heaven?” “Certainly, Father,” the man replied. “Then stand over there against the wall,” said the priest. Then Father Murphy walked up to O’Toole and asked, “Do you want to go to heaven?” O’Toole said, “No, I don’t Father.” The priest said, “I don’t believe this. You mean to tell me that when you die you don’t want to go to heaven?” O’Toole said, “Oh when I die, yes. I thought you were getting a group together to go right now.”

One evening, after the honeymoon, he was welding some stuff in the garage just for fun. His new wife was standing there at the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally spoke, “Honey, I’ve just been thinking, now that we are married maybe it’s time you quit spending all your time out here in the shop. You probably should just consider selling all your welders along with your gun collection, golf clubs, and that stupid vintage Harley.” Tom got a horrified look on his face. “She said, “Darling, what’s wrong?” He replied, “There for a minute you were starting to sound like my ex-wife.” “Ex-wife!” she screamed, “you never told me you were married before!” Tom replied: “I wasn’t.” Slaney phoned the maternity ward at the hospital. “Quick!” he said, “Send an ambulance, my wife is goin’ to have a baby!” “Tell me, is this her first baby?” the intern asked. “No, this is her husband, Kevin, speakin’.”

When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, “What’s the matter, haven’t you ever seen a little boy before?” Gallagher opened the morning newspaper and was dumbfounded to read in the obituary column that he had died. He quickly phoned his best friend, Finney. “Did you see the paper?” asked Gallagher. “They say I died!!” “Yes, I saw it!” replied Finney. “Where are ye callin’ from?”

An elderly couple were on a cruise and it was really stormy. They were standing on the back of the boat watching the storm, when a wave came up and washed the old man overboard. They searched for days and couldn’t find him, so the captain sent the old woman back to shore with the promise that he would notify her as soon as they found something. Three weeks went by and finally the old woman got a fax from the boat. It read: ‘Ma’am, sorry to inform you, we found your husband dead at the bottom of the ocean. We hauled him up to the deck and attached to his butt was an oyster and in it was a pearl worth $50,000. Please advise.’ The old woman faxed back: ‘Send me the pearl and re-bait the trap.’

A biker decides to write a letter to ‘Bikers Advice Column’: “I’ve suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs...phone rings, but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently, although when I ask their names she always says, “Just some friends from work, you don’t know them.” I sometimes stay awake to look out for her cab coming home, but she always comes walking up the drive as I hear the sound of a car leaving, around the corner, as if she has gotten out and walked the rest of the way. Why? Maybe she wasn’t in a taxi at all? I once picked up her cell phone, just to see what time it was. This caused her to go completely berserk. She quickly snatched the phone out of my hand and cursed me hysterically, screaming that I should never touch her personal property, then accused me of trying to spy on her. Anyway, I have never broached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn’t want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her. I decided I was going to park my Harley-Davidson Lowrider next to the garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the street around the corner when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my motorcycle that I noticed a small amount of motor oil leaking through the gasket between the rear head and rocker arm cover. So...is this something I can easily repair myself or do you think I should take it back to the dealer?”
