rom the looks of the Cruisin’ Calendar, It looks like September will be another busy month. Check out the Cruisin’ Calendar in this issue for all the events happening in the Carolinas in September. Here are just a few that are noteworthy. The events actually begin on Labor Day weekend with the Bull City Rumble 15 Vintage Motorcycle Show in Durham. Then on September 1-2 Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson is having a Labor Day party. September 3 is uptown Lexington bike night. On September 6-7 Raging Bull Harley-Davidson in Durham is having their Weekend Showcase of new 2020 model motorcycles. Sep 6-8 is the date for Thunder In The Smokies Fall Rally in Maggie Valley. September 7 is the 4th Annual Camel City Bike Fest in downtown WinstonSalem and the Xtreme Wings N Things Pre-Boone Party also in WinstonSalem. September 11 is a date that we swore we would never forget. Remember those who are responsible and the 2,977 innocent people who lost their lives on that day and the first responders that so gallantly served on that day. On September 14 HOG and Thunder Tower Harley-Davidson Ride out of Thunder Tower Harley-Davidson, Columbia, SC. On September 14-15 Smokin’ Harley-Davidson will have their Fall Open House and 2020 Model Demo Day. Save September 19th for Deathwish Motor Culture Bike Night at The Wing Company in Cameron, NC. September 20-21 is the Annual Biker Blues & BBQ at Tilley Harley-Davidson in Salisbury. September 21 is customer appreciation day at Thunder Tower Harley-Davidson in Columbia, SC. September 28 is the swap meet D and Q Motorsports in Angier, NC. Also on the 28th is the 8th Annual Riding With The Angels Tim Diffin Memorial Run starting at the Doghouse in Fayetteville, NC and the 15th Annual Confederate Heritage Ride leaving from Low Country Harley- Davidson in N. Charleston, SC. Then we move right into Myrtle Beach Fall Rally events and there’s a bunch of them. Checkout the Cruisin’ Calendar in this issue for more details. There are many more events scattered throughout the Carolinas during the month of September and the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar is your source for all the information. Check it out and ride to the events that you would like to attend. If you missed The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine 21st birthday and bike night at our office in Jamestown, NC on Tuesday, August 20th, you missed a biggie. We had free canned beer, live music provided by “Double Down,” Best Bike On The Lot contest, giveaways, and 11 vendors, all to provide a free evening of fun just being bikers and doing some of the things we like to do. We ended the evening with a fireworks display that attracted the attention of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department. They were loud! Like they say; “You’re not having fun until someone calls 911”. L A Office Veterans Club By: Bill Gallaway he “L A Office”, previously known as The Pour House, located at 243 Hwy. 28 bypass in Anderson, SC is a private members club. The club, owned by three Marines, has gone through a transformation and is now known as a Veteran’s Club. To become a member, you must be a Veteran of the United States armed service or love a veteran of our armed services. Membership is open to all non-Veterans for $5.00 annually. All U.S. Veterans are welcome regardless of discharge, as this is a Veteran’s club for Veterans, owned by Veterans. Also welcomed are all Heroes in uniform, first responders, police, fire, EMS and active duty. The club is open daily Mon.-Sat. 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m., and Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m. Happy Hours are 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Come in for a drink special and enjoy free snacks all day, and if you are hungry, come in for the free lunch which is served daily.

When I interviewed Don Slater, one of the owners, I was made aware of the various ways in which he supports the surrounding community and children as well as the veterans. All proceeds from the club go to veteran’s charities and into a humanitarian fund which is used in emergencies. Think of it as a Kitty where all the owners must vote as to how and when the benefit fund is dispersed. The bottom line is to take care of those that take care of us while helping those less fortunate. There are many ways to enjoy your club. Come by to horse around in the private back yard by the Tiki hut and play horseshoes and corn hole, or come on inside and enjoy a cold beverage while you shoot pool, watch one or more of the 6 TVs or dance. Don’t forget, birthdays are also a big event at the club. Every month, the members that celebrate their birthdays during the month have a party with free food. And speaking of partying, the House Band might be able to get you up on the dance floor. If you haven’t been by, do stop in. I’m sure you will enjoy your time at The Office. One more thing, there is an enormous parking lot and plenty of room for bikes so it’s also a great stop for your next poker run or cruise in type event.

I’m glad to see Dan and Dewey are doing well with their shop in Mooresville, NC. A bunch of bikers from many miles around showed up to celebrate with D&D American Performance at their First Anniversary Party on Sunday July21. These guys have quickly established a great reputation in this area as a good place to take your American Motorcycles

for everything from routine service to Hot Rod Harley motor builds. I first met Dan Workman twenty some years ago at the drag strip. He was a crew member on the Nitro Shack Pro Dragster tuned by David Lytton and ridden by Mike Nicholson. I kept hearing about him and his reputation as a good wrench. Shop owners bragged about Dan when he worked at their shop. Dan finally has his own shop and is available to work for all y’all. Jason “Dewey” Wolf may not have decades of experience, but he makes up for that with skill and desire to build a good reputation and earn your business for years to come. Dewey is professionally trained to work on motorcycles and has years of H-D Dealership experience. Now Dan and Dewey run D&D American Performance and can do just about anything and everything you need for your American motorcycle, from tires, brakes and oil changes, to building you a bad ass hot rod Harley motor, they can take care of you. Star Chapter 352 Ride To Maggie Valley, NC

By: Bill Gallaway he Greenville, SC Star Chapter 352 riders coming from Greenville, Salem, and Central SC met at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday July 27, 2019 at the Stop-A-Minute in Pickens, SC After meeting, greeting, visiting and a prayer, it was KSU at 9:15. 7 bikers and 4 in 2 cages enjoyed the ride. The ride took us north through Rosman, NC for a quick stop at Headwater Outfitters. Then we then headed north up NC 215 to Waynesville, NC and after a short road construction detour, found our

way through Silva to Maggie Valley. Lunch was planned at Butts on the Creek BBQ. A quick word of advice; if you are on 2 wheels, avoid this place. Getting into the parking lot is a challenge with loose gravel on an incline. Getting out is more challenging. In the matter of 10 minutes, 2 bikes went down with substantial damage to limbs and bikes with crash bars and broken foot pegs and scratches. The trikes fared much better, but 2 wheels â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not so well. After lunch, we rumbled on to the destination of the day the

Wheels Through Time Museum. Some had seen it before and went again. Others rode to the leather shops in the area or rode the Blue Ridge Parkway and rejoined the group a couple hours later for the ride home. While at the museum, we were fascinated by all of the vintage Motorcycles collected by the Curator, Dale Walksler and presented in a historic environment. It’s called the Museum That Runs because 99% of the 300+ rare American motorcycles do run. A few of the bikes were started as we walked through and of course that got everyone inter-

The ride home took us to the Blue Ridge Parkway where we enjoyed the cool temperatures and stopped for a photo shoot at the Parkway’s highest roadway elevation of 6053 FT. Next month it is back to Waynesville, NC via the Blue Ridge Parkway and lunch.

Windjammers’ Christmas In July Poker Run By: Wally Wersching n Saturday July 20th, the Windjammers MC held a “Christmas in July” Poker Run for the Children’s Homes of Cleveland County. The reasoning behind the poker run being held in July rather than later in the year was that the money raised from the run would help the children buy school supplies for the upcoming school year that starts in August. Another change from the norm was that it was held in the evening rather than during the day to avoid the 90+ degree afternoon temperatures that are common in late July. They tried to think of everything. For a $15 registration fee, the rider could enjoy an evening ride around the Carolinas with his friends knowing that he is helping the children of Cleveland County. The first bike out was at 7:pm. The best hand won $300 and the worst hand won $200. The stops to draw the cards were: 1) - Windjammers Clubhouse; 2) – CCIB Clubhouse; 3) – The Bear’s Den on Rt 161 in South Carolina; 4) – Skooterz Bar and Grill in Shelby; and the last stop was back at the Windjammers Clubhouse where there was

live music by the “Blacktop Burnouts”. The band has been playing blues and rock for over seven years and have played at many of the local venues. There was also wings and pizza while they lasted at the clubhouse. I arrived at the clubhouse about 6:15pm. I wanted to mingle with old friends before they took off on the run. When I walked into the clubhouse, I was greeted by some friends that wanted the latest issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle. Luckily, I was bringing a stack of magazines to the event. It was like “Old Home Week”. I talked with so many friends that I hadn’t seen for a while. It was great! After I gave my donation, I walked around catching up with all my friends, and what they have been doing since I saw them last. One such friend was “Grumpy”. I only see him at functions like this, so we sat at the bar and “chewed the fat” for quite a while. Then I saw another old friend. I have known many of the Windjammers for over 30 years. After a while, I had to get out of the building, and get some fresh air. I cannot handle the thick cigarette smoke any more. I used to smoke but quit over 40 years ago. I walked outside to visit with the people riding in to register. There was a continuous line of bikers riding in. I was interested in one who rode in on a 2001 Indian Scout. He told me that his wife bought the bike new for him 18 years ago, and he has enjoyed the bike and wife ever since. At about 7:00pm, the first riders headed out. Then a large group of bikers rode out together. There were still a lot of bikes in the lot. The bikers were probably waiting for the first group to clear before they left. I left at about 7:15 and headed home. I heard that the event was a complete success and raised $2000 for the Children’s Homes of Cleveland County. The children will be able to get their school supplies this year thanks to the Windjammers and their friends.

Speedway Harley-Davidson 6th Birthday Celebration

By: Lloyd and Rose ow! It seems like just yesterday that Amiee Thompson became Owner and Operator of Speedway Harley-Davidson. On the weekend of July 20th and 21st, Speedway Harley- Davidson threw their 6th Birthday Celebration party. I’m not sure who all was behind this event, but I do know Nichola Dow, Aimee, and The Speedway HOG chapter did a great job. They had everything. The Speedway HOG chapter provided free food each day from 11am – 3pm. The Bob Karney Law van was there, and Bob’s two beautiful ladies, Brandy and Alisha were giving out Karney freebies. Watchman Cigars was also there. Custom Modern Autobody gave Amiee a beautiful small hood with Speedway log on it. On Saturday, 3 different local breweries; Cabarrus Brewery, Armored Cow Brewery, and Pharr Mills Brewery were there

to offer their craft beers for attendees to enjoy. The Harley-Davidson Demo Truck was there with a fleet of 18 different 2019 motorcycles, from a Sportster to the CVO Limited and a Trike were on the truck. Test rides were taking off about every half hour. There was even a fenced in flatbed truck from The Flying Hatchet letting people try their skill at hatchet throwing games. There truly was something to entertain everyone. There was a stunt rider, Joe DiDonatto, performing great shows with High Live. You could enter your Harley in the horsepower contest and get a free dyno run. The Band “Slide” provided live music from 12- 3:00pm on Saturday and DJ C_Los was in charge of the music from 12-4:00pm on Sunday. As always, the

staff was working the crowd and inside Speedway Harley- Davidson, great sales were going on. Congratulations to Aimee Thompson who is truly doing a great job, making a lot of people happy realizing their dream of owning a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The Annual Arzie Rogers Toy Ride scheduled for November 23rd is the next big event. 15th Annual Antique Bikes On Main

By Wally Wersching he 15th Annual “Antique Bikes on Main” was held on July 26th, 27th, and 28th. The last weekend in July has usually been the hottest weekend of the summer, but this year it was comfortable on both Saturday and Sunday with plenty of sun, and temps in upper 80’s to low 90’s. The small southern town of Chesnee, SC was the place to be if you love old motorcycles. The festival started as a one-day event with the Sunday Antique Bike Show on Main Street . It has grown into a three-day event with the free swap meet on Friday evening, all day Saturday, and Sunday, and the bike show on Sunday. The Chesnee City Fest is held on all three days, too. There are many free concerts and shows throughout the weekend. Dennis Harris from Chesnee Classic Cycle and the city of Chesnee are responsible for the growth, and promotion of the event. The members of the local “Legends Chapter” of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America (AMCA) announced that Dale Walksler from Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC will be their 2019 “Legend of the Year” for his contributions to the World of Motorcycles. They made a plaque for him along with placing his name on the “Legends of the Year” trophy next to other “Legends of the Year”: Wall of Death rider Wahl E. Walker; Motor Maid: Betty Fauls (daughter of M.M. co-founder Dot Robinson) and drag racing legend: Pete Hill. I like to get to the event early on both Saturday and Sunday – before it gets too hot, and over-crowded. I don’t get to hear the bands or see the parade, but I see all I want and meet

friends with the same idea. On Saturday, I arrived at about 10:30am. I looked for Dennis. I couldn’t find him. He was out and about. I walked around the swap-meet field, and saw many interesting parts, and motorcycles. Everything was for sale. As I passed each tent, I could hear the owner and a customer talking about a specific part that the customer needed. It’s hard to sell at a swap meet. If you sell early, you might be selling too cheap but if you wait till the end, you might just have to bring the stuff home again. The same dilemma is with the buyers. Do you buy early or wait till the end? If it’s a rare part that you need to complete a project bike, how much will you spend? No matter what, it’s always fun.

Parked in the swap-meet field was an unusual Harley. One cylinder was outfitted with a Panhead and the one a Knucklehead. It was called the “1947-1950 Half Breed”. It looked like it was done well. The bottom ends for both engines are very similar, so it was a relatively easy swap. The next unusual bike I saw was a Goldwing trike with a diesel engine mounted in it. The frame was stretched to allow the four cylinder engine and trans to fit. It was done like a “Rat Rod” but it was obvious that the man who did it was very talented. The radiator must have been under the rear of the trike because the water hoses from the engine went under the frame to the rear. As I was walking back, I met Butch, a friend from Shelby. He had already bought a motorcycle, and a lot of old parts that he might need someday. Later, I walked to the field down the street to see the amusement rides. All rides were free! It was like a carnival. The food vendors were ready to serve their delicious treats, and the clothing vendors were also ready to sell anything and everything. The stage was set up to host the many live bands scheduled. I left a little after 11:00 and took Cindy out for lunch. On Sunday, I left home about 9:30am, and arrived in Chesnee at about 10am. I walked down Main Street to see the old bikes. I actually walked up and down Main Street a few times because there were bikes coming in a steady stream, and I didn’t want to miss any. In the show, there were many Harley’s: Flatheads, Knuckleheads, Panheads, and Shovelheads. It was like seeing old friends. There were many other makes in the show, too, like: Triumph, BSA, Norton, BMW, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, and Kawasaki. There were as many unusual bikes across the street as in the show. I was in “Motorcycle Heaven”. The first bike in the row was a beautifully restored Harley KHK – said by many to be the best all-around bike that Harley ever made. Some called it the “Flathead Sportster”. It’s a great bike to just cruise around on the back roads of America, but It’s not comfortable on the interstate. Later, I walked across the street to the Bike Show. That’s where I saw the Wards Riverside bike. I hadn’t seen one of those in years. They were sold by Montgomery Ward through a catalog in the 1960’s just like the Allstate was sold by Sears. The Antique Motorcycle Club of America Legends Chapter (AMCALegendsChapter.com) had a booth where Bud was explaining the benefits of joining the chapter to anyone passing by. It’s a great organization with a lot of benefits. The Motor Maids of South Carolina also had a booth. The Motor Maids have been around since 1940. For more info on them, go to: Motor Maids on Facebook. I couldn’t believe all the motorcycles. They were everywhere and more were rolling in every minute. Main Street (Rt 221)was not closed during the event so regular traffic, including semi-tractor trailers, were slowly driving past all the bikes and spectators. Rt 221 is a busy highway. I stopped to visit with Rick of Sandy Run Cycles. We talked for a while. He had some of his old British bikes on display

along with t-shirts, and other British bike stuff. Across from Rick was the Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group trailer. They were raffling off a new 2019 Ducati. I had met the two people in the booth before at other events, so I didn’t sign up again to win. I figured that once was enough for a bike I wouldn’t keep. The young lady is very friendly, and we had a very pleasant conversation. There was another young lady I saw ride in on her Sportster. Everybody I was with commented about her riding in shorts. Later, after she removed her shirt to expose her bikini top, she was riding up and down Main Street. All the young men enjoyed seeing her. The older men, like me, enjoyed seeing her ,too, but we cringed at the fact that she’d be sunburned or worse, burn her legs on the Sportster’s pipes. At least she was wearing good biker shoes and not flip-flops. On my way out of town, I bumped into Woody and his brother. Woody is an old friend who I worked with for years before I retired. I knew that he always wanted a Harley and found out that after a long discussion with his wife, he finally bought a nice used one. Maybe I’ll see him at a local event. Now that I know to look for him. I headed home a little after noon. There was still a steady stream of bikes riding to the event. It’s easy to tell if the oncoming bike is a newer Harley or an antique bike. The newer bikes have bright headlights. The old bikes are hard to see during the day. It was a great event, and I’ll definitely go again next year.

Thunder Road Harley-Davidson Annual Bike Show

By: Scott Wicker A Lot of events are being held at Thunder Road Harley-Davidson this summer and on Saturday, July 27th, Thunder Road held their Annual Bike Show. Eight Classes of quality show bikes and daily riders filled the parking lot leaving customers and spectators scrambling to find a parking space. The big talk around the dealership was the upcoming arrival of the 2020 Model Year Harley-Davidson Motorcycles that are soon to hit the showroom floor. As always, Thunder road did it up right with free food, while it lasted, and live entertainment by Ted Dalton. The Motorclothes® department was jumping with folks looking for the new Fall Fashions and the parts department was assisting customers and answering questions on all the accessories available for current and past year’s Harleys. The Service Department was busy with folks getting their bikes ready for all the upcoming Rallies and events. Awards were presented promptly at 3pm and had everyone with bikes in the show anxiously awaiting the results. 1st and 2nd Place Awards were given out in each class, making judg-

Every weekend The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar is filled with charity motorcycle events. A lot of them are annual events and some have been going on for a good while. Behind these events are people that are the reason that Bob Karney of the Karney Law Firm says, “Bikers are all that is right with America”. You see, Bob knows that bikers are some of the most caring and giving folks around. Being a biker himself, Bob wanted to make sure that to give back to those who were making a difference in their community and came up with the Bulldog Hero Awards 8 years ago. Each year Bob invites bikers from across the Carolinas’ to nominate their motorcycle riding peers who are making a difference in their local community and awards 3 of them with large donations to the charity of their choice. This year there was over 20 nominees from all of the Carolinas and the online voting on KarneyLaw.com nearly broke the internet. That’s how much the motorcycle community admires these local heroes and the prestige of the Bulldog Hero Awards. Bob was offering $3000 to the Bulldog Hero of the Year, $2,000 to the Runner Up and $1,000 to the hero with the 3rd most votes. That’s a chunk of change that goes directly to the winners charity of choice. Tilley Harley-Davidson in Statesville hosted the BHA

presentation this year during their Annual Sunday Bash. There was a sizable crowd gathered around the parking lot when Bob started his presentation. Classy as usual, Bob awarded Robinette Tilley with this year’s Honorary Bulldog Hero Award. It’s always good to see Robinette at events and she accepted the award with the warm smile we know and love. After the applause died down it was time to get serious. took 3rd place, Mark Bowman of Rolling Saints RC was the runner up and Billy Dagenhart of the Twisted Covenant MSC took home the Bulldog Hero of the Year award. Billy had a ton of support there that day and after a few pictures on stage he was mobbed by his brothers and sisters, it was an awesome, emotional scene. After the event I asked how he felt about being the Bulldog Hero of the Year, Billy replied, “Totally shocked and overwhelmed with the honor of being the 2019 Bulldog Hero of the Year. Huge thanks to Bob Karney and staff for all they do to bring these nominees and contributors to the forefront, they are all heroes. I’ve even been asked by the club to change my Road Name to Bulldog. I think I can make that happen.” I also asked him if he had anyone he would like to thank and Billy responded, “Yes, one comes to mind almost immediately and it’s my brave sister

Gina who inspires me to take up the challenge of community service after seeing herself and my family grow up in an abusive home. The impact from this can last a lifetime. And secondly is my brothers and sisters in Twisted Covenant MSC for believing in me and following my mission and passion to make a difference.” Well said Billy, and congratulations! Bob Karney and the Karney Law Firm has done it again. Bob has handed out the biggest pat on the back to make sure that the bikers in the Carolinas’ know that their good deeds don’t go unnoticed. Suspension Technologies Products, The Best Upgrade Bang For The Buck By: Hank Thibodeau Widowmaker Custom Design & Repair Inc veryone wants to be the fastest. Hell, I want to be the fastest. The one thing that we often forget is that more than 70% of our riding is NOT strait line. Ask yourself, when you go out riding are you looking to carve up the road on all the straitaways? Or are you wanting to carve up the twisties? Myself, rip it through the corners. You want to be fast? Upgrade the rideability of your ride. In the Widowmaker Custom Design & Repair shop, we use Suspension Technologies products. We have had great success using their shocks and drop in cartridge kits for the front. Both of which are gas charged monoshock design and dyno tested and tuned before you ever get them. Ok, so this is not an infomercial. It is about your ride and ride quality. So, you have decided to put new shocks on your bike. Congrats. It is a simple process. First, secure your bike on a secure center stand. Raise the back of the bike just enough to take the weight off the back wheel of the bike. So, the wheel is just about touching. Now,

remove the lower shock bolts. Why lower bolts first? Because there is more controlled movement in the suspension when you only remove the bottom bolt. Next remove the upper bolt and shock unit. If you are reinstalling same length shocks, simply reverse process. If you are installing shorter shocks, install upper bolts and new shocks. Lower the bike until the lower bolts are lined up with mounting holes. Torque bolts to factory specifications. I would recommend using thread locker on all bolts. It is that simple. In my shop, if you buy a set of shocks from us, we offer free installation. The front cartridge kit is more involved and requires some more tooling. But it is still a “Do it yourself” job if you feel comfortable. Again, secure your bike in a vertical position. Remove the front wheel and fender. Remove the brake caliper(s). Gain access to your fork pinch bolts, located on the upper and lower triple trees. On ’13 and earlier bikes you will need to gain access to the upper fork cap and remove it before fork removal. On ’14 and later HD touring models, this is not so. But you will need to take note of the fork protrusion from the top of the upper triple tree. Once forks are removed, remove the lower fork leg retaining bolt at the very base of the fork assembly. Once it is removed, drain all of the fluid from your fork into a drain pan. Once fluid is drained, remove the fork seal retaining clip. Now you are ready to remove lower fork leg. Grip the fork tube in one hand and the lower fork leg in the other. Com-

press the fork, slide two pieces away from each other in a rapid motion. Do this repeatedly until lower fork leg is removed. Remove the lower cup washer at the bottom of rebound dampener rod protruding from fork. A lot of times it will stay in the lower fork leg. Simply remove and discard (for this kit it will not be reused). Remove the top fork cap. Different year model forks will require different tools. Use caution when removing as there is spring tension on fork cap. Once cap is removed, remove and discard spring and rebound dampening rod and top out spring. Clean all parts with a quality degreaser. It is very important to remove all of the old wear debris that will be built up in the base of the lower leg and inside of the fork tube. Assembly is simple. Install new cartridge into fork tube. Install lower fork slider onto fork tube. Install retaining bolt into base of lower fork leg. Be sure to use thread sealer and a new sealing washer. Install your new fork seal and retaining ring. You will need a fork seal driver to install seal. Pour in slowly the required amount of fork oil. Different year model kits require different amounts. 1994-2013- 6 oz. and 2014-2019 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 8oz. The oil is to lubricate seal and springs. It is no longer used as part of the actually working of the forks. Reverse assembly of bike. Be sure to refer to your service manual for all proper torque specs for your specific model bike. You are ready to ride. First impression will be that the bike is much more stable. You will have more control in corners and balance of the bike. You will also notice that you will no longer have hard dipping in the front end when applying front brakes. The bike will lay flat and give you a much more controlled stop. 2nd Annual Ride For Youth By: Maggie Mann On August 10, 2019, the Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central North CarolinaHalifax hosted their 2nd Annual Ride for Youth. There was a marvelous turn out this year. Riders came out in force to ride the scenic 60 miles around Lake Gaston and show their support for their community and children. The ride ended at Littleton Food and Spirits, where there was live music, food and raffles. All the proceeds generated by the event go directly to the Halifax Clubs. The Boys & Girls Clubs is incredibly thankful for everyone’s help - whether volunteering, donating, or being a rider. Forty percent of children living in Halifax County are living in poverty and 25% suffer from food insecurity. Our Clubs provide a safe and educational environment for them to grow. Meals and guidance on healthy eating habits are also part of the everyday programs. the Sunday Bash. For fifteen years, Tilley Harley-Davidson of Statesville, NC, has welcomed local bikers on the third Sunday of July for Ronnie’s Sunday Bash. Yeah, we know Ronnie Carver has retired, but Robinette Tilley told me it will always be Ronnie’s Bash. He was there smiling and shaking hands, too. The Bash started as just something for bikers to do on a Summer Sunday afternoon. For years, The Bash has drawn riders from across the Carolinas just to come hang out for a while. It was great seeing folks I’ve known since my first summer back in North Carolina and new friends I’ve met while out riding recently. Once you got parked and waved to friends, you could go inside for a little cool air and some great deals on motorcycles and gear, big sales, and discounts for The Bash. They had raffles giving away a Harley-Davidson cooler. The proceeds

from the Sunday Bash go to a fantastic cause: Victory Junction Gang Camp. Bikers could get some hot, tasty Lancaster’s BBQ and a cold beer or soda for lunch and sit in the shade of the big tent. Anna’s Sweet Treats was serving up goodies for when your tongue was tuned for that. Rockie Lynn played that afternoon, so a bunch of folks were there to hear his band. They play lots of patriotic songs, praising the military, police, fire fighters, and those who live and work to serve other Americans. Rockie is a co-founder of the Tribute To The Troops organization. As I sat under the tent eating BBQ and listening to Rockie sing about American heroes, I thought about his words. It was a good thing we had lots of napkins, cause folks were wiping away more than just sweat from their eyes. Bob Karney, Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer and some of the calendar ladies were at Tilley’s handing out goody bags and preparing for a big afternoon. Bob was holding his Bulldog Hero Award presentations that day. Once a year The Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer recognizes riders who give back to the community. and women who ride and do so much for others. Robinette Tilley stopped by to greet old friends and talk for a while. She was looking good. Folks love to see her out and smiling at the dealership once in a while, Robinette was presented with a special Bulldog Hero Award for her decades of contributions to the Statesville area. It was another teary moment as all of us there. We’re so proud of Robinette and the Tilley family. Patriot Rovers Ride For The Fallen

By Lincoln ’ve been riding on this event since it began and I’m proud to support the Patriot Rovers. We have ridden in the rain and heat, with big crowds and little crowds. The part that remains consistent is the dedication to our veterans that the Patriot Rovers crew shows. The Carolina Patriot Rovers, led by David and Pam Cantera, train service dogs for our veterans who have PTSD. The list of services these dogs can perform is simply amazing. The dogs are trained to meet the specific needs of each veteran. Once the pooches graduate from boot camp, they are given to our veterans free of charge. Now that’s a helluva service!

The Ride for the Fallen is a benefit ride that David and Pam put on every year to help with funding the Carolina Patriot Rovers. This year’s ride started out of Smokin’ Harley-Davidson in Winston-Salem, NC. When I rolled in, there was a line of bikes stretching around the lot and a lot of folks hanging out in the shade of the trees. It was definitely a hot day, but that’s what we want! There is always a handful of cute pups that are Patriot Rovers in-training hanging out and you can grab a PR shirt or patch to show your support. There was a LEO escort for the ride and once we got going the officers made sure we had a smooth ride. We went on a beautiful ride through the foothills of the piedmont up through Walnut Cove, Dodgetown, and at the halfway point we stopped at a little gas station in Madison, NC to stretch our legs and grab a drink. It was a hot day and it was good to grab something cold to drink! We were still taking the scenic route and crossed over the Dan River and headed up into Hanging Rock State Park to make a loop through the parking lot. It’s a beautiful area up there and we were digging the twisty roads. On the final leg of the ride we ran us through a rain shower. It was just enough to cool you down before we ended up back at Smokin’ Harley-Davidson. The rain clouds were rolling in and there was some lightning, so the weather ended the day’s event pretty quickly. A huge thanks to all who came out to support this great program. Confederate Gypsies MC Celebrates 25 Years Of Brotherhood Hardcore Since 1994

But it also makes me proud of my friends when I see how well they have done. Proud to see guys I’ve known for years sticking together as a club. The Confederate Gypsies MC recently celebrated 25 years together at their clubhouse near Mooresville, NC. Congratulations Y’all.

Charlie Poole brought the Confederate Gypsies MC to Denton, NC when he moved down here from Virginia in 1994. By 2001, the club branched out to Hickory and I met the guys at local events. I remember the clubhouse on Main Street in Newton next to one of those little odd churches. Once established and growing, chapters were added in Statesville, Spencer, Asheville, Morganton, Thomasville, Lexington, Mooresville and Love Valley. Recently a chapter has formed in South Carolina.

While the Confederate Gypsies MC has had ups and downs over the years, the club is back and stronger than ever with good solid brothers. “It was great to have brothers here from the club’s beginnings. They show these new guys the brotherhood we have enjoyed for the past 25 years,” said Kojak a member since 2001. “Here’s to at least another 25 years. Hardcore since 94.”

He has help from many of the MSTA Club members. There are fantastic roads in every direction from the doorstep of the lodge. Doug Pippin has put together a selection of routes, both pavement and dirt, that are provided to the participants. They are some of the best roads to be ridden anywhere.

The directions are mainly for GPS, but for old timers like me, they have paper maps and directions available on the website for the event. I will ride a few of the routes in the future. I live only an hour from the lodge. On Friday night. Entertainment is scheduled. The “Almost Vintage” band, will play a set or two on the back porch. Many of the band members are riders who graciously donate their time to entertain everyone. I decided to take a ride up to Little Switzerland on Friday evening. So, I could catch the participants as they arrived. I left home about 3:30 heading north on Rt 226. I stayed on Rt 226 all the way to Rt226A. After a mile or so, I turned left to go to the Big Lynn Lodge. I parked in front of the lodge with a few other bikes. After walking around outside taking pictures of the lodge and the other bikes, I walked into the lodge. That’s when I heard “Brick” yell, “Hey Wally”. There were a few other Knobbies there, too – including Chris Jernigan, and his lady friend. Chris couldn’t ride because he pulled a tendon in one of his fingers while kayaking. After surgery, the doctor stopped him from riding until it was completely healed. I placed a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle” Magazines on a small table in the seating area for all to share. Many of the participants are from out of state, and may not have seen the magazine before, so I included a few past issues for them to enjoy, too. Then I went outside to talk with other bikers. They were all very friendly. As I was standing there, more

and more bikers were riding in. “Brick” was expecting a large group in for the rally. Participants came from all around. I saw license plates from Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Illinois, Virginia, and Alabama, along with North and South Carolina. After a man rode up on an unusual looking bike, I had to talk with him. He had ridden from Alabama on his Yamaha FJR, His bike has been modified for long highway runs. He mounted an extra five gallon gas tank where the passenger seat used to be. There were many extra high intensity lights mounted on the front of the bike so he could see the road after dark. He also had a couple extra rear view mirrors mounted to his windshield. They were wide-angle mirrors and high in his line of sight, so there were no blind spots. He was also a member of the Iron Butt Association, and had that fact displayed on his bike, too. The Iron Butt Association (IBA) is a US-based organization dedicated to endurance motorcycle riding with a claim of over 60,000 members worldwide who tout themselves as the “World’s Toughest Riders.” The minimum is the Saddle Sore 1000 – 1,000 miles in 24 hours or less. At about 6:00PM, I said good-by to my new friends, left to head home, and rode Rt 226 all the way home. When I arrived, I walked the dog, and had a delicious dinner.

13th Annual Barry “Ole Dog” Glenn Toys For Tots Kickoff By: Lloyd and Rose aturday, July 15th was the Marine Corps Toys for Tots, Christmas in July, which is the kickoff for the 13th Annual Barry “Ole Dog” Glenn Toys for Tots ride at Double D Burnout Saloon. The kickoff was a great success. Shoney Boys Chicken and BBQ, cooked pork shoulders were donated by Double D’s. There was Corn Hole, darts, and Vinyle Rapture provided our favorite Classic Rock tunes. A high thanks to Karen Martin, Lisa Kennedy, and Rebecca Luquer, who always help provide the side dishes, and a big shout out to Rose Kiby who helped oversee the food, and sale of the wrist bands. These events cannot achieve suc-

cess without donations of love from people like these. The vendors were William Nelson with a great assortment of products, Scentsy director, Savanna Boone, had a variety of products to make your home smell wonderful, and some great toys to bring comfort to your child. Nazareth Children’s Home Ride By: Darby Dillard n August 10th,when I began to get ready, for our event at Nazareth Children’s Home, I was a bit worried because I didn’t think very many would show up. “Ole Ye of little faith!” When you do things for the right reason, just relax because God will provide. Thank you to each one of our regulars and to the first time visitors. We were blessed to have you along. Everyone knows who shows most of the time and that is as good as it gets. But something else that is really nice is when someone that has come before, comes back and brings newcomers with them. That is what it takes. Plus, it was very nice to see some folks that haven’t been able to make it lately. Two ladies from 2 and 3 hours away showed up, and we appreciate each and every one, of you! We had a little bit of rain as we departed Speedway HarleyDavidson, but it felt pretty good on a very muggy day. We even had two riders that arrived at Speedway H-D as we were leaving, that I didn’t know were with us until we arrived at Nazareth Children’s Home. So that was fantastic as well. The AC wasn’t working in the gym, at Nazareth, but we had a very good Birthday Party anyway. Thank you for all of our supporters; Speedway H-D for the hamburgers, hotdogs, buns,

Dead Silence MC, Fayetteville NC Host Benefit For Kevin Greer By: Chi

Silence MC hosted a benefit for Kevin Greer on Friday, August 2, 2019. The benefit was held at Dead Silence’s clubhouse. All the proceeds from the evening went to help Kevin with his medical bills. Everyone had great things to say about Kevin and they all seemed quite thankful to do something to help him. The kind words about his character are some admirable remarks. It’s good to lift people up and validate the good things. It does seem unfortunate that those noble remarks are so often associated with someone who is facing some rough times. This is one of the reasons Dead Silence put the benefit together. They talked about what a great person Kevin is and the obstacles he is now facing. They know how costly it is to face medical bills and especially without insurance. Kevin, who has worked at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson, recently was hospitalized for a few weeks. This as a result of falling ill without insurance and without income. He started to feel the pressure from the bills that seem to just keep mounding up. Kevin was also diagnosed with Chron’s Disease. This illness by itself is enough to cause chronic pain and the medications that he must take causes so many unwanted side effects. It just becomes too much. ead

When Dead Silence MC in Fayetteville, NC found out all this news, they sprang into action to help Kevin. Within a week they set up an open house, a 50/50 drawing, and a helmet raffle. That Friday night, everyone came to support Kevin at the clubhouse. The crowds of people showed up with deep pockets to donate whatever they could to help a fellow man in need. Special Forces MC, Veterans MC, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association and independent bikers all pitched in and helped raise several hundred dollars that night alone. The donations from independent riders and people in the community are still coming in and Dead Silence MC is thankful for the support that was shown for Kevin. He was not able to attend the event himself, but he wrote a letter thanking everyone for their help. He stated that is was heartwarming. He spoke of people that did not know him or barely knew him; yet they were so willing to help someone in need. Dead Silence MC in Fayetteville, NC has dedicated themselves to serving the community and those in need. Although the club is just over a year old; they have already held several benefits and have more in the works. The club has stated that their mission is to continue to do good things for the community they call home. Kevin is an outgoing, fun-loving guy. He loves his friends and would die for his family. He is a Harley-Davidson enthusiast and has a passion for selling them. Unfortunately, his medical conditions have kept him from doing what he loves for the last few months. He has been plagued by excruciating pain for almost a year. His ongoing battle with symptoms and adverse effect is just one of the problems he has to face each and every day. Kevin is unable to work and will continue fighting each day. He presses on despite the seemingly endless doctor visits, procedures, pain and all the other trying things that accompany

these chronic condition and illness. Kevin not only fights, he is willed to win! His treatment will be ongoing; and all of which will be complicated by a lifelong battle with Chron’s disease. Kevin does have a go-fund me account that was set up for him. He is a man of pride and would never ask for a dime, as stated by his friend Josh Tabor. So, Josh took the lead and started the page for him. Josh wrote, between Kevin’s medical bills and being unable to work; Kevin needs our help! After they breathlessly finished, George gets a big thumbs-up approval from his biker buddies, the onlookers, and even the State Trooper. Then he says, “Wow! That was the best kiss I have ever had, Honey! That’s a real talent you’re wasting, Sugar Shorts. You could be famous if you rode with me. Why are you committing suicide?” “My parents don’t like me dressing like a girl.” At this point it’s still unclear whether she jumped or was pushed.

On Friday afternoon … A sly old biker walks into a jewelry store with this hot young blonde. He says to the jeweler, I want to see your finest piece. The jeweler brings out this $1,000 bracelet. The guy says, “I don’t think you understand, I want to see your finest piece of jewelry.” the jeweler says okay, and brings back this beautiful $5,000 necklace. The man irritated at this point, repeats his request. “I want to see the finest piece of jewelry you have in this damn place!” The jeweler goes back to the safe, brings out this exquisite $10,000 diamond ring. The man writes the jeweler a check and says, “Now, I know that you’re going to think, that the check is bad”.” That’s why I’m going to leave the check, and the ring with you. Come Monday morning when the check clears, I’ll be in to get the ring.” The jeweler is ecstatic and says absolutely and thanks the man for his business. Come Monday, the jeweler calls the man and says furiously, “What the hell?” The check didn’t clear, you didn’t have any money for that ring!” The man replies, “I know, but I had one helluva weekend!” A crowded United Airlines flight was canceled. A single agent was re-booking a long line of inconvenienced travelers. Suddenly, an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket on the counter and said, “I HAVE to be on this flight and it has to be FIRST CLASS.” The agent replied, “I’m sorry, sir. I’ll be happy to try to help you, but I’ve got to help these folks first; and then I’m sure we’ll be able to work something out.” The passenger was unimpressed. A CNN reporter walks into a neighborhood tavern and is about to order a drink when he sees a guy at the end of the bar wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat. It didn’t take an Einstein to know the guy was a Donald Trump supporter. The CNN guy shouts over to the bartender, loudly enough that everyone in the bar could hear, “drinks for everyone in here, bartender, ....except for that Trump supporter.” After the drinks were handed out the Trump guy gives the CNN guy a big smile, waves at him and says, in an equally loud voice, “Thank you!” This infuriates the CNN reporter. So he once again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the guy wearing the Trump hat. As before, this doesn’t seem to bother the Trump guy. He just continues to smile and again yells, “Thank you!” So the CNN guy again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the Trump guy. And again the Trump guy just smiles and yells back, “Thank you!” At that point the aggravated CNN reporter asks the bartender, “what is the matter with that Trump supporter? I’ve ordered three rounds of drinks for everyone in the bar but him and all the silly guy does is smile and thank me. Is he nuts?” “Nope, “ replied the bartender, “He owns the place!”

After their 11th child, a Kentucky couple decided that was enough, as they could not afford a larger bed. So, the husband went to his veterinarian and told him that he and his cousin didn’t want to have any more children. The doctor told him that there was a procedure called a vasectomy that could fix the problem but that it was expensive. “A less costly alternative,” said the doctor, “is to go home, get a cherry bomb, (fireworks are legal in Kentucky) light it, put it in a beer can, then hold the can up to your ear and count to 10.” The Kentuckian said to the doctor, “I may not be the smartest tool in the shed, but I don’t see how putting a cherry bomb in a beer can next to my ear is going to help me.” ‘’Trust me,” said the doctor. MMIA Follow The Flag Event By: Ben “Reaper” Rain n July 28th, MMIA (Military Missions In Action) held its annual “Follow The Flag” event. The event had a great turnout, but it was not without a few bumps in the road. You see, MMIA was set to unveil 3 motorcycles specially painted to represent 3 branches of the military (Marine Corps, Army, and Coast Guard) with two more (Air Force and Navy) to follow. But on Saturday night, Mike Dorman (MMIA CEO) was riding the Marine Corps bike when he was involved in an accident, destroying the bike. But instead of taking it easy and letting someone else take the reins, Mike marched forward and unveiled the Coast Guard and Army bikes. Mike was in no condition to ride, so he led the pack of thundering motorcycles with his trusty Chevy truck. The event started at Locked & Loaded Bar and Grill in Garner NC, then headed to D & Q Motorsports in Angier as the halfway point, where everyone was treated to great food and a live band. The ride headed back to Locked & Loaded for another live band. The party continued on with several attractions including bikini bike wash and axe throwing, just to name a few. Over 100 bikes participated, all the money donated went a local veteran’s charity.

Hand Built, American Made, Custom Parts The Rebel Spirit By: Lincoln

2018, I had a need for a local welder to help me with an idea that I had for a mobile burnout pit. No sooner than the rough idea for the pit came into my head, I had a chance encounter with Kristin Shipwash, the MFCEO of The Rebel Spirit at an event in Salisbury. We had met briefly before and I had been told that her husband was a welder. I pitched her a thumbnail of what I was wanting to do, and she introduced me to her husband, Zach. I gave him a sketchy description of what I was looking for and he gave me a nod and said we could probably work something out. Within days, Zach came up with a plan for the burn out pit and the rest is history. After coming back from getting triple coated in beautiful chrome, Zach installed it on my bike, and it is my new favorite thing in the world-unless my wife is reading this, then she is still my favorite. 1st Annual White Plains Shrine Club Ride For The Kids By: Wally Wersching n July 20th, the American Legion Post 155, and the White Plains Shrine Club got together to hold a poker run where all the proceeds of $25per hand went to Shriners Hospital for Children. Registration for was from 9-11am at American Legion Post 155 in Kings Mountain, NC. “Kick Stands Up” (KSU) at 10:30am heading to the first stop: Blue Ridge Harley-Davidson in Hickory, then across the parking lot to Iron Thunder Saloon and Grill. The third stop was Hooters of Gastonia, and the fourth stop was Winners Circle of Gastonia. The last stop was back to the American Legion Post 155 in Kings Mountain for a total of 103 miles. The best hand would win $500, and the worst hand $100. The first live band started playing outside at 2:00pm. At 6:00pm a BBQ chicken dinner was available, along with a 50/50 raffle, and door prizes. The featured band SKYNDEEP would play inside at 7:00pm. It was a full day of enjoyment and excitement. I had decided to ride “Miss Vickie” to the event. I had never been to Post 155 before, and am not that familiar with Kings Mountain, so I looked up the location on-line, and realized that it was very easy to find. I left home at about 8:30am. It was a cool and comfortable ride, but was supposed to get into the mid to high 90’s by the afternoon. When I arrived in Kings

Mountain, I turned left onto Gold Street and the American Legion Post was on the left. I pulled into the large lot to the side of the building, and parked with the rest of the bikes. I dropped off a stack of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines at the registration table when I made my donation. I showed the American Legion Riders that they were in the article on page 68 that I wrote about the Kings Mountain Memorial Day event in the July issue of The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Most of them had not seen the magazine, and were surprised to see themselves in it. It’s always rewarding to share magazines with the people that I write about. I walked around taking pictures, and talking with the people who were there. I wandered inside the building to see how organized they really were. The building is in pristine condition with a banquet hall and a lounge. Outside there’s a very nice little patio. After talking with a few of the legionnaires, I realized how much they are committed to the American Legion. Outside, there were a few tents, with vendors selling stuff. There were event T-shirts, a man that made key fobs, and The Tom McGrath Motorcycle Law Group, who were giving away a Ducati motorcycle in a raffle. I had already signed up for one but had a very interesting conversation with the two people manning the tent. One was a young lady who had done an Iron Butt event. She told me that one day she and some friends rode from Charlotte to Daytona Beach for lunch. I asked her how good the lunch was. She said that she didn’t eat, but took the time to take a nap before heading back. She mentioned that it was a little boring riding all day. I walked back to “Miss Vickie” to see a young couple ride in and park. The young man was wearing shorts, and burnt his calf right over a tattoo on his bike’s hot exhaust pipe. Another

legion rider had a first aid kit with some burn cream. I don’t like getting burned, so I always wear long pants and boots when I ride. As it was getting close to 10:30am, the bikers were standing near their bikes anxious for the ride to start. The road captain explained the route, and that even though it was not a group ride, they could ride together. Then the chaplain said the biker’s prayer asking God to watch over the riders and keep them safe. At a little after 10:30, a large group left. Some stayed behind intending to leave later, and others were still riding in to register. As I was walking back to “Miss Vickie” for the ride home, I met Scott Neisler, the mayor of Kings Mountain. All the legion riders just know him just as Scott, not Mr. Mayor. I met him a couple years ago when he was directing traffic at Murphey’s Toy Run – which is also in Kings Mountain. As we walked back to the table with the stack Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazines on it, I told him about the article about the Memorial Day event. He was excited to see it, and said that he would share it with many of his co-workers at City Hall. I said good-byes and headed back home. I was glad that I went. I met a lot of very friendly and dedicated people many of which, I can now call friends.

Xtreme Wings N Things Summer Party / Chad’s Birthday Party

This particular Summer Bash was in honor of Xtreme Wings N Things Owner, Chad Torok and you know when it’s the boss’s party it’s gonna be full tilt! I rolled in and had to make 2 laps to find a parking spot. The street was parked full way down past the bar and the parking lot was teaming with activity as well. I ended up squeezing into the parking lot close to vendor row. During the day the lot was full of vendors with all your biker necessities. Leathers, helmets, patches, jewelry and more were on display from one end of the parking lot to the other. They even had some lovely bikini clad ladies sudsing up motorcycles and making em shine for “tips”. Xtreme Wings is always a “who’s who” of the local biker scene and it only took me a couple steps from my bike to be in conversation with friend. I made it inside and headed straight for the bar. Brandee is a great bartender and makes sure to keep the patron’s whistles wet. Sometimes I don’t know how she pulls it off with as many thirsty folks are belly up to the bar! Beside the bar, the pool balls were crackin and the tables were full of folks eatin, drinkin, and enjoyin the day.

Chad and Brandee know how to keep the crowd going and there is always some live music going on from one of three different ‘stages’ at Xtreme Wings. When the band on the inside stage ends a set, the outside stage or the patio stage takes up the torch and keeps the music rolling. This makes for a never ending multi-band all day party! The Xtreme summer party featured Jukebox Revolver, Jordan Pickett, Steve Pegg and the Burn and as always Crazy Guitar Dave filling in between sets! That’s a heck of a lineup for a party, but that’s not even the end! Local NC recording artist Tim Elliot was the headliner of the day. Tim has brought the house down a few times at Xtreme Wings and the mention of him being on the bill that day brought some music fans out. Xtreme Wings N Things has a party going on all the time. Evan Parton Giving Patriot & Biker Ride In Peace

“giving 100%”, but Evan Parton personified that ultimate number. He brought a fierce brand of single-minded determination and devotion to everything he did, in every moment of his vibrant life; which sadly ended July 23, 2019 at age 62. Son of a Navy man, he never served in the Armed Forces, but dedicated much of his life to veterans’ causes, notably as Vice President of the North Carolina chapter of Tribute To The Troops. “He spent his whole life giving,” Tribute President and Founder, Rockie Lynne, remembers, “To give of yourself, of your life, as he did, is so unusual.” Rockie thinks that 9-11 changed Evan’s perception of the world. “He realized how his life was predicated on the freedoms that were provided by these men and women that he didn’t even know,” Rockie says. “For a while, Evan served as ride captain for Patriot Guard Riders, a group of motorcycle enthusiasts which protects military families at veteran funerals.” The two met at a Rolling Thunder concert, where Rockie’s band was a headliner, and Evan was taking photographs, another of his passions. “Evan was everywhere,” Rockie recalls. e often speak blithely about

“He would lay down in front, and shoot up at the performers. He was crawling around the stage to get shots of the bass player, and the drummer. It was just pure joy. It looked like giving a little kid an ice cream cone. He just went nuts.” After that grand impression, Rockie asked Evan to be a regular photographer for his Tribute organization, which holds motorcycle events and concerts around the country to honor Gold Star families. Evan especially loved Rockie’s patriotic ballad, “Home”, so Rockie gave him a music track for it. Evan regularly sang it for veterans at hospitals and VFW posts, sometimes playing the tambourine. At one memorable Rolling Thunder event in Washington, DC, Rockie invited Evan on stage to play and sing with his group. “He just freaked out,” Rockie remembers, “He started playing the tambourine as hard as he could. He played it so hard that he cut his arm, and he was bleeding. Then he fell off the stage, and had to go over to the EMT booth. He came out and his arm was all wrapped up. Blood was streaming from the side of his head, and he just said, ‘This is the greatest thing that ever happened to me! Thank you!’” When Rockie asked Evan to be Vice President of Tribute, he jumped at the opportunity. His wife of 37 years, Cindy, said that it gave Evan’s life real purpose. “He embraced it with all of his heart,” Rockie says. “I would much rather have someone you have to pull back on occasion, than someone you can’t get to do anything. He would always just be 100% on.” Rockie recalls Evan asking his opinion about getting a new tire for his Harley, as he needed to replace the back one in preparation for a Tribute ride in Minnesota. Never a man of large means, Evan had bought a cheap car tire. Rockie warned him that it wasn’t safe to use such a tire on a motorcycle, but Evan took off anyway. Somewhere around the Wisconsin bor-

der, it began to rain, and Evan skidded off the road. “He called me and said, you’re right, those tires aren’t worth a darn in the rain,” Rockie says, but Evan used the opportunity to hand out flyers and Tribute plaques at the accident scene. “He couldn’t afford a motorcycle tire, but he wasn’t going to miss the Minnesota ride,” Rockie says admiringly. “He just lived his life that way. Everything he did was full-on, even if it was half-cocked. Even if the idea wasn’t completely formed, or it wasn’t the best idea, he was all in.” Part of Evan’s contribution to the organization was the plaques he made and distributed, with stars he cut from retired U.S. flags, with the names of lost veterans printed on them. He crafted these for all five Tribute chapters. Rockie said, “He would say to people, ‘This is a star from a flag that can no longer fly, to remind you of your freedom,’”. Rockie finds it hard to conceive of Tribute To The Troops without Evan’s energy, love and dedication. “He was really and truly one of a kind. I can’t think of another person that’s like Evan,” he says. “It’s so daunting to think about the troop events coming up, because he was our most active and aggressive volunteer. No one’s ever going to fill Evan’s shoes. There will always be a little hole where Evan Parton was. I miss that guy. I miss him a lot.” Tribute members are stepping up now, making more of Evan’s star plaques. But on these new ones, Evan’s name appears alongside each veteran’s name. “To keep Evan Parton’s memory alive,” Rockie says. “Because that’s what Tribute is

all about, it’s about not forgetting the people that have gone on before us, that meant so much to our lives.” It is not uncommon for non-veterans to pay tribute to veterans. Many wear tee shirts and patches that state: “I wasn’t there, but I still care.” But Evan’s funeral was a kind of reverse sentiment. Veterans flew in from all over the country to honor him. Rockie sang Evan’s beloved song “Home,” usually reserved for memorializing fallen soldiers. It was proper commemoration for a man who dedicated so much energy and precious time to veteran causes, especially Tribute to the Troops. “Every time we would go visit a family, Evan would stand right in the very front,” Rockie says. “And he would listen to every word of every story that was told about that young man or woman. Every time, he would come up to me afterward and say, ‘I feel like now I know that person. And I met his mom, or I met his dad, or his wife, or his kids. I wish I could have met that hero, because I felt like I knew him.’ And I hope that if there’s justice in the world, he finally did get to meet him. Maybe they’re all standing there waiting on him, saying ‘Hey man, hey Evan. 2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things have become new. What are YOU called for? I know when Tank passed away, I said I was through going to church and was through with any kind of ministry work. Let me tell you, you don’t tell God what you’re going to do. Several months later, I was asked to travel and give mine and Tank’s testimony. I would tell people I wasn’t worthy, and no one wanted to hear what I had to say. We’re only worthy through Jesus Christ. Don’t ever say that nobody wants to hear what you have to say. Several times after I spoke some women came up and said, “Thank you, I needed to hear that.” We all just need to step out in faith and let the Lord do the rest. We need to put self in our pocket and take it out when the Lord is through using us. Another thing that gets me is people asking for money on Facebook to go out and do the Lord’s work. If God wants you to be at a certain place, He will supply your need. He may even lay it on someone’s heart to give you the money. He doesn’t want us to beg, He wants us to have faith and believe for what we need. Before the Lord can really use us, we need to have forgiveness (I know this is a hard one). If we’re holding something

against someone, we need to go to them and ask for forgiveness, that sets us free and them also. Mark 11:25: And wherever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in Heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. Just remember before you speak, (another hard one) Hebrews 4:12: For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, joints and marrow; and intents of the heart. The Hide–A–Way Tavern A New Name With Biker Roots By: Lincoln

Hwy 220 in Rockingham, NC is a sweet little biker bar called The Hide-A-Way Tavern. The bar was called Buddy Roe’s for a number of years and has a reputation as a great biker hang out. The new owners, Chris and Felicia, picked up the bar and renamed it, but continue the tradition. Chris says, “We are an everything bar, young folks, old folks and bikers all congregate at The Hide-A-Way.” The bar sits in a “Y” In the road between Billy Covington Road and Northam Road. and has plenty of real estate to get comfortable on. This is a really cool membership beer bar that features brown bag availability, 3 pool tables, a screened-in back porch and a huge fenced in private back yard. The back yard has a few picnic tables, a band stand, fire pits, a burn out pit and room to play games like horseshoes, jumbo beer pong, corn hole, or just hang out and take in a live band on the outside stage. Jessi Combs, 36, Dies In Car Crash Attempting New Land-Speed Record

She was the “fastest woman on four wheels.” BY JENNIFER NIED Woman’s Health mag.com AUG 28, 2019 essi Combs, 36, died in a car crash on Tuesday, August 27. She was attempting to break her own land-speed record in the Alvord Desert in southeast Oregon, according to Road & Track. Jessi held the title of “fastest woman on four wheels” and appeared on TV regularly as a builder and fabricator. When she crashed, Jessi was driving the same North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger in which she set the land-speed record back in 2013 at 398 mph (with a topspeed run of 440 mph), according to her website. The vehicle is a reconfigured F-104 jet with 52,000-horsepower and measures 56 feet long. She

and her team were aiming to top 512 mph, the current Women’s Landspeed World record set in 1976 by Kitty O’Neil, to become the Fastest Woman on Earth. Terry Madden, who is a member of Jessi’s team and was on the scene when she crashed, confirmed the news of her passing. He shared a video and heartfelt post on Instagram. In the caption, Terry shared, “She was truly my unicorn and I enjoyed every single minute that I had with her. She was the most amazing spirit that I have ever or will ever know. Unfortunately we lost her yesterday in a horrific accident, I was the first one there and trust me we did everything humanly possible to save her!!”

Star Days Honor Ride By: Bill Gallaway n Sunday July 15th, a group of Star riders from Greenville, SC left on a ride that would take them to Roanoke, VA for the 21st Annual Star days event/rally. Star days is an annual event where Star Chapters from all over North America converge on the designated city for their annual rally. During the event there are many activities planned and just as many unplanned. There were 12 Self-Guided Ride routes for participants to enjoy ranging from 11 miles to 154 miles. Many of the rides took advantage of the area’s majestic mountain sites, mountain lakes, dams and the Blue Ridge Parkway. One ride even went to the Mountain lake lodge where the movie Dirty Dancing was filmed. The weeklong event is packed with rides, bike shows, charity auctions, business meetings, demo rides, trivia rides, scavenger hunts, games, and food. Speaking of food there is also a ride to the FTC Food Drop. This event had 85 riders going to the Semi-Trailer full of food where our Charity- “Feed the Children” gave boxes of food to the needy as determined by local churches and other organizations. Approximately 400 families were fed that day. On Tuesday July 16th from the Star Days in Roanoke VA, 83 bikes and 120 riders rode to Bedford, VA to the 9 acre National D-day Memorial site. Since it was the 75th anniversary for D-Day Memorial and the final salute. This ride was approximately 1 hour long and was police led the entire way controlling the traffic for the safety of everyone involved. There were 12 motorcycle law enforcement officers riding ahead and behind blocking entrances to the highway on our journey. Upon arrival we were taken aback by the amount of realism created at the site. One can easily spend a couple of hours walking the property. The D-Day Memorial was established in Bedford because it sacrificed the greatest percentage per capita nationally of Bedford boys during the campaign, thus inspiring the U.S.

Bragg Harley-Davidson supported the back to school during the month of August. There were several weeks that focused on promoting back to school efforts with several motorcycle clubs. Students were all lined up to receive their packed book bags. The faces of all the students were energetic and excited looking forward to a brand new school year. The Chrome Knights MC were wearing their orange and blue and hosted raffles, prizes, suport

plies and food. Kickstands were up and they had an awesome ride with so many bikes there to rubble and rally the support for students and their families. While the Steele Angels were set up inside for their back to school poker run. Riders were entering in hopes of scoring a winning hand. The month was full of biker fun in the celebration of back to school. They rounded out the end of August with the Summer Bash, Bike Night and the New Model Release Party. 2nd Annual Memorial Ride For Larry Kistler

By: Susan Fish n Saturday August 3rd the New Korner Pub hosted the 2nd Annual Memorial Ride For Larry Kistler. The cost was $25 for a single and $30 for two up which included BBQ plates. The stops included Iron Thunder in Mooresville, Twin Oaks in Denver and In The Wind in Huntersville. The New Korner Pub in Mooresville was the first and last stop. The Mojo Band donated their time for the event. There was also a 50/50. Larry was a long time regular at the New Korner Pub who passed away from esophageal cancer, so we donated the all the proceeds to The American Cancer Society. Larry was a great guy, a life-long rider and friend to many in the biker community. He also rode in many charity events before his death. His last bike was a beautiful Road Glide. Larry passed away way too young. We hope this will be an annual event for a long time. Larry Kistler is greatly missed. We would like to thank everyone that made this possible.
