une 18th is National Ride To Work Day and we at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine are doing our part. Not only on “Ride To Work Day” but all year long. WE RIDE! I am proud of every issue that we produce. We are #1 in the Carolinas. Undisputedly, we distribute more magazines in the Carolinas than all the other local magazines COMBINED! Some that claim to be competitors don’t even have anything to distribute! We have distributed over 3 MILLION printed copies! It reminds me of McDonald’s restaurants in the early days when they posted their sales numbers on their signs. Everyone loves The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and reads it cover to cover. It is very gratifying when our readers introduce themselves at events and tell us how much they enjoy the magazine. The vast majority of comments are positive and the most common question is, “How can I get my picture in the magazine?” Aside from asking where they can find The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine in their community, the most common complaint that I hear is that we are a North Carolina magazine. Yea, we are based in North Carolina, but we have been serving North AND South Carolina since 1998. Actually, we have been subsidizing South Carolina for a long, long time. While a majority of our advertisers may be based in North Carolina, the reason that the magazine looks the way that it does is because the advertisers in North Carolina understand that advertising in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine WORKS! On June 22-23 Rockingham Dragway will be taken over by deviant chopper lovers. This event is not for the faint of heart, but if you love motorcycles and the lifestyle, I dare you to miss it. It is the Lucky 13 for God’s sake. It has to be great! We have been attending this event for years, so it is not hearsay or second hand information when I say it is the wildest event in the Carolinas! Here is how it goes. This is a two-day event and I advise that you get there early and plan on camping to get the full effect. The admission is $35 for the weekend ($30 Saturday only). There is a charge for camping, but it is real reasonable and there are plenty of campsites. This is non stop fun with a chopper bike show, 50’s style (run what you brung) drag racing, mini bike racing (super hero costume mandatory), a painted lady contest, cool vendors, and MORE! Rebel Son, Artimus Pyle, and an AC/DC tribute band, Highway to Hell, will provide the music. All of these bands are well worth hearing, but if you have never experienced the rock-a-billy music and lyrics of Rebel Son, you are in for a treat. “The Smoke Out is about choppers,” said Edge, the event organizer. “It is about builders, from professional builders to those
bloody-knuckled guys and ladies burning the midnight oil in an unheated shed to build a chopper they can call their own. Chops of all makes are featured, American, British, Japanese, everything. The event is about riders, cross-town to cross-country in a rainstorm.” If I could only attend one event this year, it would be Smoke Out 13. Bring your energy drinks! By: Caroline I don’t know if I have ever said it out loud, but I certainly think it - that it seems incredible that it has been 14 years since Curly and Laura Williams first thought of and implemented the idea of the Memorial Wall and the service held on the first Sunday in May every year. It is somehow comforting to know that this tradition has been carried on for so long and has grown to be a meaningful event. As Mark Leonard stated in the opening introduction, this event is an opportunity to remember our friends and family that we so loved to ride with, the good times we had with them, and shared our love of riding with. Since 1998 the Winston-Salem HOG chapter has worked very hard to make each year’s Memorial Sunday a meaningful day. Presently, Smokin’ Harley-Davidson so graciously continues the tradition with a style that brings the loved ones and visitors out each year. For the early arrivals, breakfast is provided with gospel music and a worship service. The Memorial Ride begins at 11 am and riders are back to enjoy a barbecue lunch before the rededication ceremony begins at 1pm. Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines begins the service as he has for all 14 years to make the dedication and proclaim the first Sunday in May as Memorial Wall Sunday. Each year he reminds us that the memorial wall was the first of its kind in the United States. I always liked the part of the commemoration that Mayor Joines recites: “the brotherhood of motorcycle riders goes beyond life as life goes beyond death…” After the color guard from American Legion Post 55 present the colors, Brother Bill Dotson reads the names of each person on the Memorial Wall, adding the new names of those who have passed on since last year. Family or friends are invited to walk by the Memorial Wall to read their loved one’s name or simply to reflect. At the program conclusion, taps is played and folks are invited to release balloons in the air. The Freedom Memorial Wall, it is available for public viewing seven days a week at a beautiful park like setting. Thunder In The Smokies By: WildThing Music, motorcycles, and a super moon all contributed to a mystical evening in Maggie Valley. Handlebar Productions put on their spring Thunder In The Smokies Motorcycle Rally with the Saturday night headliner band - Confederate Railroad - and they rocked the house. The Maggie Valley Festival Grounds was packed with motorcycles for this ride-in concert. The evening began at 5 pm with Michele Leigh, and then at 7, Jason Sturgeon hit the stage. They both were very entertaining. In between sets, the latest addition to the repertoire of Thunder In The Smokies, the t-shirt gun perched atop a camouflage stand pelted the crowd with event shirts and hats were thrown out to the appreciative crowd. Everyone settled down and crowded in toward the stage when Confederate Railroad hit the stage, and the band held the folks mesmerized for their hour and a half set. They put on quite a show. Saturday started out dismally with a thunderstorm, just as rally goers were getting up and the early birds were already at the local restaurants for breakfast. We thought it might end up a typical wash out, but after we spent an hour at the Wheels Through Time Museum, it had cleared up and was sunny with blue skies. We headed over to the rally just in time for the start of the ride in bike show. There were 21 beautiful bikes entered for this peoples choice show. The new rule this year was that you could not enter your ride if you had won in the past three years, which is understandable when a $500 prize is handed out to the winner. The show bikes gathered in front of the stage and the owners were asked to turn their helmets upside down so the patrons of the rally could vote by placing the ticket they received at the gate in the helmet. After giving everyone ample time to vote, the tickets were counted and it was really no surprise that the Confederate theme bike owned by Tony and Cheryl Ferrell of T & A Cycles in Lebanon, TN garnered the most attention. The bike is a rode bike with 93,000 miles on it, but is was spit polished for this show! Next on the agenda were the bike games. Chris always has a lot of competitors for his games, partially because he has lots of help and they keep everyone moving, but mostly because the grand prize for the couple that earns the most points is $500, sponsored by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.). They did the slow race, the plunger game, hide the beer can in the haystack game, and a mild version of ‘honey, I’m home’. C’mon Chris, you gotta make these guys work a little harder on this one! These are all spectator-pleasing games and at the end, Shane and Shawn from Cliffside, NC won. They must practice in the off-season, because they have taken home the bacon on several occasions. The local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans always has a booth at Thunder in the Smokies and does a 50/50 to raise funds for pet projects, like gifts for needy children at Christmas. They also get the proceeds from the beer sales, so this rally is important to them. This year the split on the 50/50 was $274 and was won by Charlie from Lexington, NC. He did tip
the Vets out of his proceeds. Backing up to Friday night, we missed the early band, but did get to catch the performance of Michelle Leigh, an energetic young lady with a pretty good voice. Mustang Sally hit the stage at 9:30 and this band really wowed the crowd. They were a lot of fun. It was a jam-packed weekend and surely won’t be the last. Salute To Women In The Military - Past & Present
By: Paula DeVaughn Rolling Thunder SC3 held their second “Thunder at the Kampground” event at the KOA Campground in Myrtle Beach, SC on Saturday, April 21st. Several members camped out on Friday night. At 10am on Saturday RTSC3 raised the POW/MIA flag over the Campground. The “Salute to Women in the Military-Past and Present” ceremony took place at 11am. Honorary RTSC3 member, Frank Brincat, is an ex-POW from WWII. He spent 3 ½ years as a POW in Stalag 17-B. Frank brought it to the attention of RTSC3 that there were women who were POWs. It is his strong belief that the contributions of women veterans have long gone unrecognized. With a nudge from Frank, several members did extensive research into the history of women in the military. They complied three amazing books filled with details of contributions of women as far back as the Revolutionary War. Frank Brincat gave the opening speech. Then each of the six women veterans were escorted into the ceremony. They were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for their service, a red rose, and a pin. Two of the women veterans are still on active duty: Katherine Jenerette is a Captain in the US Army Reserves and Thao Barnes is a GM2 in the Coast Guard. The ceremony was followed by a BBQ lunch and music by the Mafia Band.

Mystery Party Kick Starts Riders’ Roost Season
Story and photo by Alan Dockery Party season at the Riders’ Roost got in gear the last weekend of April with the Mystery Party. This party is the same weekend as the Merle Fest and The Roost is a good place to camp for folks attending the music festival. It’s always great to ride in Friday afternoon and start seeing friends I’ve missed over the winter. A small, relaxed party had most of us sitting around eating, drinking and talking with old friends and making new ones. The creek was still too cold to swim, but some of us walked the bank feeding worms to the fish. I hope the fish are fat and hungry later this year. Friday and Saturday nights we gathered at the pavilion for pool and karaoke. None of us are going to make it on American Idol, but we sure had fun singing along to old favorites. Saturday afternoon Dave started the mystery part of the party. Every few minutes he would give us clues to find The Golden Egg. It was funny watching a bunch of bikers trying to figure out the clues as we searched the property. Bill Bowlin, from Asheville, NC, found The Golden Egg hidden in the tailpipe of Tony’s Star Trek Victory dresser. He won a free stay at The Roost and some t-shirts. Now that Roost party season is in gear, regular Roosters are looking forward to the Spring Fling June 15-16. This is usually a big party so y’all come join us – check out the new outdoor kitchen, sit in the creek, juke to the band, and get in the wet t-shirt and men’s chaps contests. Wooooo!

Hannah’s Heart Poker Run
By: Judy Bortz Sunday May 6th I rode the Hannah’s Heart Poker Run in Wilmington. The original event was planned for April, but was canceled due to weather. This was the rain date for the event. I didn’t expect to see a big turnout for a Sunday ride, but 167 people registered; the biggest group I have seen so far this season. Hannah’s father, a New Hanover County Sherriff got on his bike and participated in the ride, which touched all of us. Hannah is an extraordinary infant. She is the first child of David and Audrey Dombrowski. Hannah was born at 34 weeks on November 19, 2011 with a mass on her heart. Duke kept Hannah in PICU for 30 days, and released her when it appeared the mass was not growing. In February at a regular 3 week checkup Doctors said that the mass had crushed the right side of her heart, and was growing through the left side, they gave her two weeks at that point without a transplant. She was put on the donor registry, and she held on for 2 months when finally a heart was found. At just 5 months and 1 day old, little Hannah underwent a 12 hour and 15 minute transplant surgery on April 20th. Just 12 days later Hannah was released from Duke but had to stay in the Durham area. The Dombrowski’s should be bringing their daughter home with them May 10th. Hanna must continue with regular monitoring, but the prognosis is good, and it

David told me she will have to take rejection medicine throughout her lifetime, at a cost of $1200 to $3400 per month. “The costs and treatments and monitoring just do not compare in any tangible way to the joy of holding my baby girl in my arms. She is so strong, we are just so proud of her.” This very special baby that needed a heart has captured the hearts of so many! It was wonderful to be a small part of this fundraiser. The weather didn’t seem very promising as the morning registration went on, but fair skies prevailed and we saw more precipitation from the attendees’ faces than the clouds! This ride wasn’t long in miles, but all of the checkpoints were fun, and well organized by Sharon Williams and Denise Hinnant of Britt Motorsports. T-shirt, raffle, and 50/50 tickets were sold all day long, and participants were served a pork & chicken BBQ dinner with all the trimmings at the end. Live auctions were held for some great prizes and all of them went for very generous bids. One of the most poignant moments was when the winning hand was announced, a Royal Flush of HEARTS! The hand was presented to David Dombrowski, and it was a very emotional moment. The 50/50 was $1,180 and the winner donated every penny back to the cause. All told the event raised a staggering $10,100 for baby Hannah. In all the years (too many to mention) that I have been involved in charity events I have never seen a single small town event raise this kind of money! So let people say what they will about bikers, let them look down on us and judge us. I am here as witness that bikers are the most generous, caring, giving, big-hearted group of people anywhere, anytime. BAR NONE! Love the life, live the life, and keep the rubber side down brothers and sisters!

By: Gypsy Girl Nature couldn’t have planned a brighter or more beautiful day than May 12th for the NC Law Enforcement Torch Run For Special Olympics. The sun was bright and shiney with just a touch of a breeze to keep temperature right at 70º for the 200 + motorcycles that showed up for the police escorted ride from Shelton’s H-D in Smithfield, NC to the Goldsboro Shelton’s H-D. We were all waiting for the rainbow of motorcycles to ride by and pull in to our stop. Some of the Olympians were right up front smiling and laughing, having fun, and enjoying themselves watching the pretty motorcycles pulling into the drive. We were all waving and just in awe at how many people came out to show their support. NC Law Enforcement, Shelton’s H-D, and Goldsboro HOG were the gracious hosts of this event. All proceeds from today’s event went to the Special Olympics of NC. The County Sheriff’s Department helicopter was watching everything from overhead. That was so awesome to watch land and take off! Cool! The swat team, USO, Army, Red Cross Mobile Command Unit, disaster relief truck, police, NC State Troopers, Sheriff’s Department, EMS units, CMA, Bikers For Christ, Sudan mini rigs from the Shriners, as well as some pretty big red fire trucks were all out for us to see. It was great! Not to mention the food and ice cream. Oh, yeah! Well over 500 people came from all over NC to attend this event. It was such a pretty sight. Every one seemed to have a wonderful time. I think everyone that was involved did a great job. Whether you’re an Olympian, staff, or an attendee, thank you for sharing a wonderful time for a great cause and making today possible! Canine Angels Fund Raiser
By: Steve (Who Let the Dogs Out) Rowland On May 5th some of my biker friends from the Old Coots and Rolling Thunder rode over to Applebee’s in NMB for a pancake breakfast. Kathy Moupin was putting together another fundraiser for one of our local resident. Rick Kaplan, he is the trainer of some amazing dogs. They are the Canine Angels. He puts these rescue dogs through an evaluation to see if they are able to be service dogs. Once chosen, Rick trains them and gives them to our veterans. All the money raised goes to the Canine Angels. Rick Dressler, one of our Vietnam Vets, heard about Rick and the dogs at the Vet center. He got in touch with the Angels and now he has a companion service dog named Sundance. He has had her for 7 weeks and she already has helped him so much. Even today was part of what his dog does for him. Two month ago Mr. Dressler would have had a hard time with the crowd today. When our service men and women come home war, they have lots of baggage. He served in in Vietnam 196768 and has been looking for something like this for years. I also met Larry McMahan another Vietnam Vet. His service dog, Abby, helps him physically. Larry has some issues picking up things, his cane, the remote, phone, just about anything that he needs help with, Abby is his companion. His wife, Piper, says this dog is a miracle. She told me that tomorrow they were attending another fundraiser at a local watering hole, Patios. I rode over to check it out. Rick Kaplan had his six dogs out on the deck and the guests were handing the dogs money. They were taking the bills over and dropping it in the donation bucket. Everyone loved it and kept giving. I met another companion dog named Toby. Her master is Jim Miller. Jim said she was rescued from a pack of dogs that were running amuck. The pack ran off, and she stayed. She was given to Rick; she passed all the tests to be a Canine Angel and was passed forward to Jim, an Air Force Vet, who really needed her. Its incredible how things turn out. One day you’re running with the pack, and the next day you’re a companion dog, taking care of a United States Veteran. There is another division of the Angels that I didn’t know about. The dogs that don’t make it as a Service Dog turn into therapy dogs. These dogs go to adult day care centers, nursing homes, and schools. They perform magic for the mentally and physically challenged patient who spends their days there. The handlers hold the leashes; the dogs do all the work. Jeanne Maxon, (Therapy Dog Division Coordinator) said the second graders love to read to them. She said the dogs just hang around and listen to the stories. 2nd Annual SAFCAB Poker Run By: Sheila Hattaway On May 5th 2012, SAFCAB held their 2nd Annual Poker Run and All Day Event Fundraiser for Domestic Violence Awareness. We had two main goals with our annual event. First, we wanted to promote awareness about domestic violence and let people know they are never alone. We also had pamphlets and pocket cards to share with anyone that needs it to aid them in getting the help they need to escape a bad situation or relationship. Second, we wanted to raise money for our local shelters. The shelters give and do so much to help those in need. Their doors are always open. All proceeds from this event are going to Safe Space, a local shelter located in Louisburg, NC. They help people from all around our area. For more information on them, visit www.ncsafespace.org. A representative from Interact came to the event. Interact is located in Wake County and offers safety, support, and awareness to victims and survivors of domestic violence. Safe Space has something called the “Purple Shoe Display”. They use men’s, women’s, teenager’s and children’s shoes to represent victims that have died as a result of domestic violence. Seeing this display makes such an impact and gives you a visual representation of the reality that people sometimes don’t survive domestic violence. THAT is why we do this; to help people realize they can escape those bad situations and to support those shelters and organizations that offer a safe place to turn to when they’re ready to leave. Weather forecasts were threatening to make this a disappointing day, but the morning sunshine welcomed bikers to come out to support a great cause. Things started out a little slow, but closer to ride time, more and more bikes began to roll in. We ended up with over 100 bikes and riders on the poker run. For only $20, each biker received their poker hand, BBQ/chicken plate, raffle ticket, and event t-shirt. The event t-shirts would not have been possible without the generous donation of $1500 from TT&E Iron and Metal Recycling in Garner. The poker run was a 70+ mile ride through country roads with stops at Cleveland Draft House in Garner, Heidi’s Two Wheel Café in Smithfield and Pastimes Bar back in Garner. Just a few miles from the end of the ride at Locked and Loaded Grill in Garner, the rain began to pour. That didn’t matter at all though. Everyone rode on and revved their engines and made the best of the rain. Dripping wet, we rode into our final stop to draw our final cards and join in the fun there. It was a little soggy, but well worth it. People huddled under tents to draw their final card and wait for the rain to move on and very shortly, it did just that. At Locked and Loaded we had eight amazing bands donating their time and talent for an exciting day of music. Monika Jaymes and 9 Ball Tight started the music around Noon. Kickback, who traveled from the coast to perform, made the
transition inside because there was no way the rain would stop this day’s events. After they wow’d us, Piece of Time (an Iron Maiden tribute band) and Dime-A-Nation (Pantera tribute band) took the stage. They were followed by Smackdown, a Godsmack tribute band that traveled all the way from Charlotte to support this cause. The final bands were Blackwood Haze and finally Effigy to headline the night. And without the hard work of Tony Miller handling the sound system and PA for the bands, we never would have made it all work. Everyone was blown away by this amazing show. SAFCAB was overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the music community and their commitment to raising awareness for domestic violence by playing for free, but also making so many adjustments throughout the day due to the rainy, stormy weather. Nothing was keeping them down. Due to the rain and the need for bands to move inside to play, DJ and Karaoke Queen Wanda Thompson entertained the crowd outside. Through rain and shine, she kept everyone going, playing great music, singing, and we even had some dancing going on in the parking lot. While bikers and supporters dried out underneath the reappearing sun, everyone took advantage of other fun activities. Interactive Playgrounds donated a dunk tank for the day. Volunteers in the dunk tank “talked junk” to those trying their best to make them splash down. If that wasn’t enough, Stokes Bail Bonds brought out their “jail”, where you could make a donation to have someone “arrested”. They were put “in jail” and then had to raise their bail money to donate in order to get out. Everyone really had a great time with this. Also there were several vendors present to sell their wares. Atkins Auto and Collision Center, Bobbie’s Leather-N-Things, Cruzin’ Hydes, Open Aire Metal Market, Robin Porter’s Body by Vi and Ray Price Harley-Davidson. Ray Price also brought out their “Startup Program” trailer. This is stationary motorcycle on a trailer that people can ride in place to get a feel for riding to see if it’s for them. If all this was not enough, even more wonderful people

donated their time to fix up some of the best BBQ and chicken plates you could imagine. These plates were included with the poker run, but many others came out just to buy plates because they knew they were prepared by some of the best cooks around from Pastimes Bar. Without donations from Pastimes, Phoenix Tattoo, White Swan and Cleveland Draft House, this would not have been possible. And we can’t possibly forget the awesome raffle items. So many local businesses came through with donations and so many volunteers were out beating the streets to get them. There were over 75 very nice raffle items to choose from (all listed on the SAFCAB website with links to all those that made the donations). And you really did get to choose your prize because when you bought raffle tickets, you could drop your tickets in the prize bag you really wanted to win. Yet another rainstorm was headed our way, but we got all the raffle tickets drawn just as the drops began to fall. Talk about perfect timing! All in all, even with the rain, it was a perfect day. The event was a huge success and it was so touching to see the support from the community, even in the rain. We were overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity. As of the writing of this article, the total raised is $4391 so far. Raffle prizes that were not claimed the day of the event are being auctioned and other donations have been promised and are being mailed in. Our goal is to hit at least $5000, but whatever we raise and donate will help women, children, and men (yes, men are victims, too) that need help starting their lives over free from abuse and full of happiness! By: Lori Canoy Weatherman Maria Luisa Canoy was born in Beeville, Texas on June 27,1957. Her Italian mother called her “Marisa” combining both names. Marisa loved her family, her friends, and was always the one taking time to help someone, or visit someone in the hospital, or just a phone call to make sure everything was OK. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. She had so many friends that she called her extended family. Marisa began her motorcycle training classes at Cox’s Harley-Davidson in Asheboro, NC. She was so excited, but didn’t want anyone to know just in case she did not pass. But she did pass. She developed stage one breast cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy and radiation, but she kept a positive attitude and became the president of the “Fight Club” formed when she had cancer. She was now a breast cancer survivor. She had lost her hair, and she was ready to join the sisterhood of survivors. During the two years after getting her motorcycle endorsement, she became involved in the Biker For Boobs Run. She rode in 2010 with her brother Larry Canoy. Then in 2011, she rode with her brother-in law, Brice Auten. It was another fun time on the Bikers For Boobs Run. She then realized that she was ready to start looking for a bike. She found a black 1998 Sportster Hugger. Her dream had come true! She began with short rides, alone. Then she rode with our brother in law. On April 14th, they rode almost 100 miles and made it home safely. On Sunday, April 15th, Marisa went to church at Hope Baptist Church. She came home and went over to mom’s and spoke to her little sister in the driveway. She was just a smiling big. She and Brice went riding. On their way back on Fuller Mill Road something happened. Brice checked his mirror frequently all day, but when he looked back this time, she was not there. He turned around and found her down an embankment. He called 911, and Marisa was flown to Baptist Medical Center where there she was pronounced dead. On April 15th we lost a sister, but we gained an Angel. Fly Free Sweet Marisa. Your time here on earth is done.

By: Buzz On April 29th Harley-Davidson of Greensboro hosted Live Music In The Park. Harley-Davidson of Greensboro’s Motorcycle Park is located right beside the dealership. It’s a nice sized open field with big Pin Oak trees on the border of the park supplying plenty of shade. At the back end of the park is big, permanent, professional stage able to accommodate open mic performances and national recording artists alike. The front of the motorcycle park is home of Chunk’s Hawg Haven, a biker owned biker bar with roll up garage doors that face the
stage that make taking in a live act and shooting the breeze with your buddies go hand in hand. Big Bump & The Stun Guns were on stage grooving out bluesy rock tunes and making it look easy. If you have never seen Big Bump & The Stun Guns you are missing out on a band that really knows their music and puts on a great show. While the band played, the bartenders at Chunk’s Hawg Haven were slinging drinks and the heaters were providing some warmth for the bikers who had filled the parking lot on this cool spring day. It was great to duck in the bar and grab a drink and warm up a little while still taking in the show! The Triad H.O.G. Chapter was hosting a cash giveaway that afternoon at 2pm. H.O.G members were selling last minute tickets and tickets to a 50/50 raffle prior to the ticket pull. The clock struck 2pm and everyone crowded around the stage hoping their number would be called for the $500, $200, and $100 prizes. Unfortunately none of the winners were in attendance. It was even more of a bummer that I didn’t win! Go ahead and mark your calendars for the Summer Bash on June 9th at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro’s Motorcycle Park. There will be live music, vendors, food, DJ, and a Hot Chaps Contest! See Ya There!

On hand for the ceremony were new owner, Fred Vosshardt, General Manager, Bob Fitzpatrick, Graham, NC Mayor, Jerry Peterman, Hal Bates of Glen Raven Mills, Alamance County Commissioner, Tom Manning, and several of Down Home Harley-Davidson’s employees. Owner Fred Vosshardt purchased the dealership from Randy Davis in December of 2011. Vosshardt is also owner of Caliente HarleyDavidson in San Antonio, Texas. The name of the dealership has changed but its pursuit of customer satisfaction will always be it’s top priority. Many improvements to the dealership have already taken place. On the 3rd Friday of each month throughout the summer, Tilley’s will hold a cruise in for cars and bikes from 5-8pm. Get your hotrods out or shine that scoot, for a ride to the best dealership in the good old USA. For the first cruise in of the year there was a great crowd. Fast Freddie (DJ) played until “Mid-Night Gypsy” took over the entertainment. There were Adult Beverages and A to Z catering was on hand selling some really fine burgers, dogs and wings along with all the trimmings. By: Caroline This year’s ride was in honor and to memorialize 2 special men - Randy Wood and Keith Miller. Mr. Miller was an avid motorcyclist who put more than 400,000 miles on his classic Harley-Davidson. He was also, a World War II Navy Veteran who served during Pearl Harbor. Mr. Miller was highly respected member of the Bethel Baptist Riders and was certainly missed. Randy Wood was also a missed rider who had passed away just a month prior. Those who are familiar with this group, knows of Randy’s artistic talent and his motorcycle drawings were very much a prize that everyone wanted at previous year’s rides. In fact, this year his widow donated his paintings that 8 lucky folks won. Pastor Jesse Miles, led the riders through the beautiful Yadkin Valley, MoN & WeD Iredell and Wilkes County again this Pool Tournament 8pm year. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Department escorted this special ride that was both bittersweet and enjoyable. As World Tavern Poker Tournament she did the past 5 years, Joy Moose has done an outstanding job of pulling the whole thing together. Also, the members of the church who do not ride wholeKaraoke W/ Ron & Lynda heartedly support their bikers who raise funds for their missions and other important ministries. By: Gary Steelman May 5th was a beautiful day for a ride in the hills of Wilkes County and a stop in at Crossfire UMC’s Jesus Rocks Rally made it even better. The Crossfire House band, the Sound of Faith and others were playing music all day. These guys and gals rocked the country hillsides! They played music that ranged from original songs by CJ Ballard to ACDC all day. The bike games were awesome, balloon toss, slow races, and all round fun. Dunk and Catfish got wet. Ha-ha! Sport bikes, Harleys, Suzukis, and Yamahas took their places behind Sue’s Ridley in the bike show. Congrats to all the participants. Everyone that made a showing had a great time. Food was plentiful from free barbeque chicken to hamburgers. Next time let’s have some ice cream to top off the hot afternoon. Door prizes were handed out all day for hats and tees, gift cards to local businesses, and an auction was held to raise funds for Crossfire United Methodist Church’s needs. Raffle tickets were sold on beautiful handmade quilt. The high point of the day was getting to see the community and bikers come together for a day of fun and games. Children of all ages played well together at the Let’s Make a Deal booth, or at the bike games area and even standing in line waiting to get a tattoo. Older couples and the younger crowd seemingly took turns dancing to their generations’ music of choice in front of the bandstand. From the music to the food and vendors, something for everyone was to be found at Crossfire’s Jesus Rocks Rally that Saturday. Laughs and a shared love for people seemed to weave its way through the crowd when bikers and Crossfire folk meet to party. I hope to see you there next time! RIP Gloria Jean Ballard
By: Gloria and Roy Creasman Gloria Jean Ballard passed away on May 9th, but her passing didn’t go unnoticed in our local community. Although Lil Gloria, as her friends called her, was petite she packed a lot of living into her short frame. Professionally Gloria owned and operated her own real estate agency and for most who didn’t really know her, was presumed to be the least likely to be seen riding a motorcycle. Her first foray into the motorcycle world began with dirt bikes and later morphed into riding her beloved Harley-Davidson Sportster. Starting first as a passenger, she quickly realized that there was more to be enjoyed by riding her own motorcycle and at the age of 57 she took and completed the Beginner’s Riding Course. Just days after completing the course she purchased her black 1997 1200 Sportster and became a full member of the Smoky Mountain Harley Owners Group. All this took place during a time when women riders where not as prominent as they are today. Her travels included distance rides to the Florida Keys; Sturgis, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (for the 95th Anniversary of Harley-Davidson) and shorter rides to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Richmond, Virginia (Virginia State HOG Rally), Atlanta, Georgia (Harley-Davidson’s100th Anniversary, “The Open Road Tour”) and Daytona Beach, Florida for at least 10 years. Perhaps her most challenging rides took place when she rode the “Oh My God” road in Colorado and the road to Pike’s Peak. Lil Gloria’s diminutive size failed to capture the passion with which she lived her life. Her love of motorcycling was displayed within her work in the Smoky Mountain HOG Chapter and the many philanthropic projects the chapter undertook. For many years Lil Gloria was the Chapter’s official photographer and quietly managed to capture and publish the activities the chapter’s many activities through her photo albums. Her efforts on behalf of the HOG chapter were rewarded when she was named Smoky Mountain HOG Chapter Member of the Year in 2001. Words cannot fully describe the impact that Lil Gloria had on so many lives. As fellow motorcyclist all we can do is to aspire to be the kind of caring person that Lil Gloria would want us to be. Her loss has left a void but her legacy lives on through each of us.

14th Annual Kerri D. Efird Memorial Scholarship Ride
By: Charles Holcombe I can’t believe it’s been fourteen years that people have been riding for the Kerri D. Efird Memorial Scholarship and the crowd stays strong. There were only twenty bikes fewer than last year, but hey, the weather forecast lately has been less than correct. It was about 56º when we left for the ride this morning with forecasts of rain and doom, not to get much warmer than about 65º. We arrived at West Stanly High School in Oakboro, NC early so we could get some great photos of the riders as they came in. About 50 riders were already there. I spoke to Mayor Efird (Scott) and eventually found Tracy Efird. They were busy getting ready for today’s event. Tracy begins working on the ride way early in the year. If you’ve ever put together a ride this big, you would understand why it’s important to do so. The registration lines are steadily moving now and bikes just keep rolling in. You get a cool commemorative t-shirt and a plasmug at registration. This is collector stuff for bragging rights because for a long time, this has been the largest ride in all of Stanly County! Just around the corner, the Uwharrie Chapter CBA/ABATE has set up an information booth about motorcycle safety, education, and awareness. There are so many people here that I could stand around yakking all day, but I have committed myself to getting some photos of some really cool bikes and some really great looking gals! Not to mention that we’re going to get some really great BB-Q and raffle prizes when we return from the ride. Yes, we get to ride! Lane Furr will be head of the group again this year with his wife Phyllis riding along. Escorting ahead of Lane will be Deputy Cagle from the Stanly County Sheriff’s Department. With that being stated, it’s time to ride! It’s coat and gloves for the start of this ride. It’s funny, how we’ve had fair weather since spring of 2011, and now it gets chilly? It takes a while for all the bikes to leave the parking lot of West Stanly High, and heading east on Hwy 24/27, there seems to be a revving spirit hovering over this crowd of dedicated souls participating in this most worthy ride. The line of bikes is so long, one cannot see the front of the pack from the rear. It’s just motorcycles as far as you can see. The only time I saw the police escort was when they left the parking lot, and then when it was turned over to Sergeant Branch of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department down by the bridge over Badin Lake. Sergeant Branch escorted us the rest of the way to Cox’s Harley-Davidson in Asheboro, where there was food and refreshments for the crowd. This is the only rest stop on this ride, and it’s a good one. After stopping for a while, it’s now time to make the journey back to West Stanly, through the wooded country roads that led us here. The entire Uwharrie Region is known for its
majestic beauty and biker-loving roads. You could just get lost and ride all day and not have a care in the world here. All the bikes are now started up and rumbling, ready to travel Hwy 134 through Troy, NC and on back to the high school. This ride just seemed to flow rather easy. The temperature is much fairer and the wind is not so bad. Most all of the opposing traffic on the two-lanes pulled over while we passed, showing much respect and courtesy for this Memorial Ride. Kerri D. Efird Passed away on February 21st, 1999 from Cystic Fibrosis. Scott and Tracy keep her memory alive through this SCHOLARSHIP RIDE, benefiting West Stanly students. They have raised much needed and deserved funds for the students through the years. Everyone involved is strictly volunteer. It’s an honor for them to participate. At the end of the ride, there were some awesome BBQ and raffle prizes! Afterward, the crowd slowly dissipated, as if not wanting to leave. By: Raven Well, being as April 28th was my birthday it seemed like the perfect day to do some shopping, so we headed out to Sandhill H-D in Pinehurst, NC. I went to see the new spring collection while my better half looked around at all the bikes in stock. He may have just bought a new one, but he’s still dreaming of another. Jimmy Melton with family, friends, staff and the H.O.G. members put on a nice relaxing enjoyable event. I have traveled a few miles around the country and seen many dealerships but this one seems to value every single person who walks through the door as family. We were greeted with a smile the minute we walked in. As we enjoyed a cook out on the bright sunny day, the parking lot had constant movement and flow of people coming out for the spring Open House. The Secret is Out: OBX Bike Week Is On The Map!
By: WildThing If you have been paying attention, the allure of the Outer Banks has been beckoning motorcycle riders for years to come experience their lush landscape and intriguing history. Add to that the Outer Banks Harley-Davidson dealership has been hosting a motorcycle rally for ten years now, and it has grown exponentially. The reason I know this rally is really taking off is because I was at the first one, so I can compare! This April, despite cool temps and a little rain, there were hoards of motorcycles touring the beach roads, the favorite sight seeing attractions, and partying at the hot spots in the evenings. Maurice Slaughter, Kevin Johnson and the staff at Nags Head Harley-Davidson and Outer Banks Harley-Davidson have worked hard, built relationships with the local hotels and restaurants, and the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, to make this rally grow over the past ten years. It has all the components now: week long tour rides and contests, H-D Demo rides, a bike show, welcome parties at some great beach watering holes, vendor sites, and the official OBX Bike Week bikini contest. Since I haven’t attended in a few years, I was very pleased to experience the level of involvement of the local businesses that has changed the face of the rally from just at the dealerships to include several vendor locations, live entertainment, and parties at various restaurants and pubs, and you could enjoy a nice ride from place to place. Everyone was pleasant and acted like they really appreciated the bikers coming to town in the early spring. On Friday afternoon, Nags Head Harley-Davidson hosted a ride-in bike show. The Harley-Davidson Demo Truck was on hand and there was a full complement of demo riders leaving the lot every few minutes. Those guys were busy! The store and outside booth were crammed with shoppers taking advantage of the special prices on genuine H-D collectible t-shirts and other products while waiting for the judges to make up their minds. Finally it was time to award the trophies. The winners are: Touring Class: 1st Place - Bob Dinkler, 2nd Place - Tony Miller. Cruiser Class: 1st Place - Brent Harding, 2nd Place - Randy Frey. Sport: 1st Place - Lynn Miller, 2nd Place - Jimmy Gray. Custom: 1st Place - George Evans, 2nd Place - M.B. Medley. Antique: 1st Place - Michael St. Jean, 2nd Place - Robb Hoffman. Trike: 1st Place - Sue Dinkler, 2nd Place - Chip Davis. Best Of Show went to Ice. Congratulations to all. Nags Head Harley-Davidson also gave out a plaque for
Largest Group riding to OBX Bike Week - a group of 12 bikes from Shenandoah, VA, and the plaque for the one who rode the farthest was awarded to Jimmy and his son, Josh from Cape Coral, Florida. On Saturday, as we rode into the lot at Outer Banks HarleyDavidson, we had a tough time finding parking spaces. It was packed out and the store and vendors were kept busy. We saw bikes from Vermont, Kentucky, Maryland, Georgia, Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Tennessee and probably some others that we missed! Everyone was gathering, after a week of riding and partying, for the jewel of bike week - the Miss OBX Bike Week 2012 bikini contest. Nine lovely ladies braved the cool temps and overcast skies to show off their assets on the outside band stage for honor of wearing the Miss OBX Bike Week sash. The panel of judges were seated in the front row and armed with tally sheets to properly assess the contestants. Rain was threatening, so they quickly narrowed the field to four. Amid much picture taking, the winners were announced. 3rd Place - Sarah from Tampa, Florida. She received a prize of $200. 2nd Place - Ashley from the Outer Banks took home a $300 prize, and 1st Place - Brittany from Kitty Hawk received $500 and the Miss OBX Bike Week 2012 sash was placed on her. Ironically Brittany was also chosen Miss OBX Bike Week in 2011. Yes, she is the pretty brunette you saw in the ads in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine! The H.O.G. Chapter awarded the poker run winners their prizes. The poker run started at Nags Head H-D, stopped at the OBX Visitor’s Center, the Bodie Island Lighthouse, Awful Arthur’s, and ended at Outer Banks H-D. $80 and a plaque for best hand went to Rick from Severna Park, MD, for his full house, nines over threes. Scott from VA Beach won $40 and a

By: Buzz World Class Powersports was hosting Demo Days at their Victory/Polaris dealership in High Point, NC on April 19-20. My interest is always peeked when there is a chance of demo rides on new motorcycles! In a time where the baggers are making a strong push, I decided to go the other way and test ride Victory’s “old school” bobber, the 2012 High-Ball. Lets face it, I was attracted to the bike cause I though it looked cool. I could see myself cruisin’ the Carolinas on this sweet ride! White wall tires, apes, flat black “Suede” paint, blacked out pipes and engine are just some of the features that attracted me to this bike. Pair that with a screaming 106 cu in Freedom V-Twin, 6-speed transmission, and forward controls and you have a complete package! Now it’s time to take a ride. Shane and the rest of the crew at World Class Powersports got the High-Ball gassed up and went over the controls in a “pre-flight” briefing before we hit the black top. I flipped the key and hit the start button and the fuel injected High-Ball rumbled to life. World Class Powersports is located at the top of North Main Street in High Point, NC with close access to Hwy 311. A few traffic lights later we hit the highway, a perfect place to see what the 106 cu in Freedom V-Twin was made of. Going up through a seamless 6-speed transmission I got up to cruisin’ speed on the highway. The transmission was so smooth I had to check the speedometer that has a handy gear indicator on it to make sure what gear I was in. I cruised for a minute or two taking in the comfort of the ride, and then I twisted the wick to see what she had. HANG ON! The High-Ball had no problem in the get up and go department! Taking the exit ramp, I geared down and allowed the transmission to work as a brake, only needing the brakes for the final stop. The High-Ball’s low 25 inch seat height gives the bike balance and makes it easy to maneuver on the city streets as well. Stop light to stop light, I enjoyed riding this bike. I could have kept riding the HighBall all day and I hated putting the kickstand back down. The good news is that this awesome bike starts at $13,499! The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Run By: Steve (just happened to be there) Rowland At about 5:30 on my way home from a poker run April 15th, I stopped at a traffic light. The light turns green, but the truck in front of me just stayed there. Then I noticed a guy standing there stopping traffic. He was holding an American Flag. Upon closer inspection, I noticed it was Jay Mozeley from Jay’s at Little River. All of a sudden about 100 bikes came through the intersection. These bikes just rumbled. They were all dressed out with American Legion colors and I couldn’t resist following them. I pulled out between the truck and car and turned left right after the last guy went by. We rode about 1/8 mile to the American Legion Post 186 in Little River, SC. I pulled in the parking lot riding tail gunner. People were clapping and cheering all around us and the local news was there. It was nice, but I really didn’t know what was going on. After I parked, I started talking to a few of the riders. Some had ridden 600 miles to attend The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Run. That’s what was happening! I had not heard of this before, so I had to do a little research for info on them. The American Legion Legacy Scholarship provides scholarships to children who have had a parent killed on active-duty military service since Sept. 11, 2001. Inside the American Legion was chock full of folks, enjoying stories of the ride, and the friendship. I met Post 186 Com-

Post 186 donated all the food for tonight event. Joe DiPasque, American Legion Rider Post 186 President, told me their group was over 50 bikers strong that rode up to Columbia SC for the beginning of the ride, The run departed early morning on April 14 from American Legion Post 6 in Columbia, and went approximately 300 miles to Rock Hill, Greenville, with an overnight stop in North Augusta. The following morning, the riders rode to Goose Creek, Hemingway, and then Little River. This was SC American Legion Riders first state ride. The 612-mile run involved ALR chapters and American Legion posts throughout the state, and raised more than $10,000 for the Legacy Fund through pledges and direct donations. The money from South Carolina’s state run will be contributed to the 2012 national Legacy Run, which will take place August 21-25, running from Niagara Falls, N.Y., to Indianapolis. “This event is a great ride and for a great cause,” said Walt Richardson, the state director of South Carolina’s American Legion Riders. All of the money raised in South Carolina will go toward the Legacy Fund. “There are no administrative costs associated with this event,” said Grady Richardson, director of ALR Chapter 84 in Hemingway, S.C. AHDRA Spring Nitro Nationals Story and photo by Alan Dockery Ah, how I love the smell of nitromethane and tire smoke on a spring afternoon. For many of us the sensations of drag racing season started at the All Harley Drag Racing Association’s Screamin’ Eagle Spring Nitro Nationals at Rockingham Dragway, NC, the first weekend of May. The weather was beautiful all weekend with only a couple clouds threatening to sprinkle. Rockingham is a camping and party race too with lots of folks camped in the shade near the pits. Saturday night PeacePipe rocked the place until midnight. The AHDRA races twice a year at Rockingham, so Carolina Harley drag racing fans can get more nitro fumes. The Rock is known as a fast track with lots of records set there. Tommy Grimes, Pfafftown, NC, qualified the Ray Price H-D machine number one in the Screamin’ Eagle Top Fuel field. Grimes lost to Douglas Horne in an amazing final round race. Both men ran identical elapsed times of 6.306 seconds at more than 219 mph. But Tommy lost at the tree with a reaction time of .028 to Doug’s .016. Wow what a race! Mark Cox, Fleetwood, NC, qualified number one and then went on to win the Hawaya/Vreelands Pro Dragster class on his cool black and yellow Bojangles machine. Jay Beasley, Winston-Salem, NC, rode the Bobby Hoover Racing machine in qualifying. Keith Browne, Semora, NC, won Rush Pro Gas. Mike Motto, Jacksonville, NC, qualified in Rightquick Street Pro. Dickie Johnson, Aynor, SC, ran in Hot Street. Keith Richner, Moore, SC, made it a couple rounds in the 9.70 index Bison Racing Super Gas class. The Wood Pile is back. Scott’s son Chris now wears the famous grey and blue 911 leathers. Those folks always have a good time at the strip and I like seeing them bring fans that cheer from the stands. Chris Wood, Princeton, NC, qualified at the top of the 10.90 index Rush Super Eliminator field. Jimmy Winters, Apex, NC, and Lane Boger, Sr., Greensboro, NC, also competed in the class. Garret Owens, Welcome, NC, made it to the SE semi-final round. Lots of Carolina racers made the 22-bike Screamin’ Eagle Performance class running on an 11.50 index. Erik Harley, Gastonia, NC; Don Meeler, Woodboro, NC; Travis Ellis, Summerville, SC; Greg Best, Raleigh, NC; Lane Boger, Jr., Concord, NC; Calloway Ledford, Jr., Sylva, NC; Tim Scamardo. Gastonia, NC; Jeffery Ellis, Summerville, SC; Garrett Owens and Jimmy Winters competed in SEP. Kelly OvercashBraswell, Sanford, NC, crashed early in the weekend, but she is OK and was cheering on her team Sunday. Donald Hebert, East Providence, RI, took the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine bonus check for qualifying number one in Syn 3 ET with a .004 reaction time. Jarrod Danka Ride
By: Ann Jones We have all seen bubbly kids that are just full of life and rambunctious. Some of these kids even like motorcycles. Jarrod Danka, a local 11-year-old boy, is one of these kids. Jarrod would love to ride more but Jarrod is suffering from 2 types of kidney diseases and in critical need of a kidney transplant. South Carolina have proclaimed Friday, April 27, “Jarrod Danka Day” A lot of local businesses came together to sponsor this event being spear headed by Tom Lorenz, marketing Director with SkyWheel USA. Many local businesses pledged 10% of business proceeds from the day to Jarrod Danka’s kidney transplant fund as well. Later in the evening several bands played in Jarrod’s honor while Councilman Randal Wallace presented Jarrod with a proclamation from the city of Myrtle Beach, SC. Several motorcycle groups where there to support Jarrod and his family during the evening. Rolling Thunder SC 3, Horry County Abate, Roughnecks, Old Coots were there to offer their support and participate in the fun. On April 28 the Jarrod Danka Ride was held at the Little Beaver Bar in Murrells Inlet, SC. Over 60 motorcycles rode with stops at Butters Pub, Texas Roadhouse (MB), Jamin Leather, and Big Beaver Bar. It was a Beautiful day and an awesome ride. Just watching Jarrod and his twin sister Devon riding was awesome sight. Only a couple days earlier Jarrod was in the hospital at UNC-Chapel Hill dealing with an infection that threatened to make him miss “Jarrod Danka Day”. Rolling Thunder SC 3 members President Bruce Hutchison and Larry Jones had the honor of riding Jarrod and his sister, Devon, on their motorcycles during the run. Big Beaver Bar at the county line was the party place for some awesome BBQ, Baked Beans and home-style coleslaw. Silent auction, 50/50, awards for best and worst hands made for an exciting end to a great run with Jarrod and his family. A lot of money and awareness was raised and presented to the family by the officers of Horry County ABATE. Jarrod and Devon also received their own leather vests with ABATE patches from the Horry County ABATE Officers Emmitt Jones of Rolling Thunder SC 3 and Horry County ABATE held a bell toll for past bikers with assistance from Rich Ryan of Horry County ABATE. A great after party and a big thank you to the staff at the Beaver Bar At The County Line, Tom Lorenz and the band, Power Born Rebellion aka PBR that rocked the pavilion. We all learned a lot from Jarrod and his family during the ride and I am blessed to know such a fine young man and through him I know the future generations of bikers will be great people. However, I can attest to the fact that there is indeed a lot of folks here who ride and have done so for as long as I can remember. Fortunately, for us, James Deal decided to open up a shop here in town a few years back. He also likes to share the fun with his customers and has opened up his parking lot for 2 Saturdays this year for anyone who wants to sell trade or just browse around. On April 21st, Just Hawgs was the site for the second swap meet and it was a success! By: Pam’s friend Saturday, April 21, 2012 was a wonderful day in more than just one. It was a day that Pam Thrower had been waiting on since she got the awful news just a few weeks earlier of her cancer. When she received that news, her husband, Tony Thrower, organized a poker run with just a short time to get it done as the doctor told Pam she only had four to six weeks to live. (I can’t imagine receiving that kind of news.) The poker run started and ended at Big Al’s on Albemarle Rd. in Charlotte. There was a good turn out of family, friends, and some that just wanted to help. Pam was set up on Skype so people could send her well wishes and see her at the same time. That was very moving and emotional. She had originally planed on riding in with Tony to kick things off, but she was just too weak. The very next day I received a call from Tony. It was the news we knew was probably coming, but we all were praying for a miracle that was not to be this time. Tony told me Pam had just passed away within the last hour around midday on Sunday - the very next day after the run. Tony seemed to think she was holding on for the poker run, as she was very happy to see all of the people that turned out to support her. Her spirits were high and she had a great day. I would like to ask you all to pray for Pam’s family and friends, especially her daughters, Krissy Knight and Dawn Thrower, her husband, Tony Thrower, and her mother, Mary Sutton. God bless! And keep the faith!

Have you ever looked back at where you were to help you appreciate where you are now? Sometimes we need to look at things from the past to have a comparison point for today. Kinda like a road trip on the bike; seeing where you started and where you arrived, and all that happened in-between. Many rode down to Myrtle Beach last month (so glad its back); some got wet then dry then wet again but still made it to their destination. Many will head to Sturgis again this year and are already making plans and anticipating an exciting trip. But to appreciate the trip you have to know where you started from and all that you overcame to make it to your destination. Sometimes it’s the perfect ride with no problems at all and we are thankful for those trips, but those are not the ones we remember or talk about the most! What about the times it rains the whole trip, or is extremely cold, or the dreaded breakdown occurs? What about the times it’s so hot you can barely breathe, or the traffic is terrible, or a near miss of an irresponsible cage driver? Or what about the 1000 bathroom stops on a 200-mile trip!? These are the rides we remember the most; the ones we had to overcome obstacles to reach our destination. But, Praise the Lord, we made it and then we realize it was all worth it. What about the trip you are on now called life? Do you have comparison points; where you started and where you are now? Yeah, I know it’s not all been the easiest ride and life has its problems; but it also has its rewards for those that overcome them.

This is a wild trip we are on and it’s not over yet, it only gets better if you are born again through Jesus Christ! By: Joel Roberson I showed up at New River Harley-Davidson for the Armed Services YMCA Poker Run on May 5th. It was already 78º at 9:30am and there was a lot going on. The ASYMCA was out to raise money to allow the children of the YMCA to participate in many different events and learning activities at little or no cost to the families. The Navy was also there running a bike/car wash to raise money for the Eastern Carolina Navy Ball. Then I looked behind me and there was a 2010 Custom chopper built by Orange County Choppers that was donated to the Tuckahoe m/c and Armed Forces Of America m/c. They are raffling off tickets to benefit a wounded warrior that became a quadriplegic. Nope, not done yet! Golden Corral was there cooking up food provided by New River H-D to raise money for Camp Corral. A lot of great people attended this event supporting a lot of great causes.

By: Scott Wicker The beautiful weather on Saturday, April 21st could not have been more perfect for this event that benefitted Kids Path of Hospice of Alamance/Caswell. Over 50 bikes were registered in 10 categories for this very special event at Down Home Harley-Davidson in Burlington, NC. Each bike was judged but they also had milk jug containers attached to them and anyone could make a contribution by putting money in the jug of their favorite motorcycle. The top money raisers also received trophies for their efforts. Pegram Prevatte Insurance provided great food. There were many items raffled and event T-shirt sales along with a 50/50 drawing helped to raise funds for the event. After all was said and done, over $6200 was raised by this one-day event. By: Gypsygirl What a nice evening to learn about motorcycles! Boot Camp was here at Shelton’s H-D in Goldsboro on April 26th. Boot Camp was a great time for the folks who attended. The staff was ready and able to answer any/all questions to do with motorcycles and proper gear. Jimmy did a wonderful presentation of motorcycles, the families of motorcycles, and all the differences between them as well as how to properly customize your motorcycle to fit both the rider, their style as well as safety. Jimmy, with the assistance of Shawn, showed how to properly pick up a dropped motorcycle so you don’t hurt yourself in cases where there’s no help in sight. Stephanie explained all about MotorClothes and apparel. She explained the importance of proper clothes, gloves, helmets, eyewear, and jackets. She showed us all the new stuff on the market from jackets with body armor to helmets with eyewear built in. I tell ya they come out with some great stuff all the time. How cool is that? The staff also went over the importance of the Riders Edge class. The class is offered to any and all who are interested in feeling the wind in your hair, the sun on your face, and the freedom of two wheels. Everyone had a good time. Thank you for coming out! Riding The Spectrum For Autism
By: Judy Bortz This event hosted by Britt Motorsports in Wilmington, NC on Saturday, April 28th was truly an EVENT! There was something going on all day for the entire family including, face painting, a bouncy house, motorcycle stunt show, food, and raffles. I really loved the raffles. There were around 40 great prizes each with its own ticket drop, so you could play only the ones you wanted to win! The ride was over 50 miles all told, with 42 bikers registered to play. Large groups are a fun dynamic when added to the beautiful countryside and river vistas, great weather, and NO RAIN! I rode along with Heather and Nicholas Long, who have 4 children, two of which are autistic. Founder/Director Judy Clark was absolutely overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support she received from participants, “The local bike community here in Wilmington is so great, and you have the biggest hearts, and are so generous! Thanks to all of you we were able to raise $3,500 for this program!” Participants were not all local though, one rider was from Austin TX, and another, working in Goldsboro from out of state, said he keeps up with local events and rides by subscribing to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine weekly email notification! Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others in many varying degrees. Currently 1 in 110 children are diagnosed with ASD. Locally there is a nonprofit organization that helps families in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties. Judy Clark founded A.S.A.P in 1994 in an effort to get her oldest autistic son out of the institution he was forced to live in for 8 years, and back into the home. Now they run two group homes (and a day program), one of which was a stop on the run, where we got a chance to meet some of the residents. They loved the bikes! Their well-trained staff provides services including
home and community support, personal care, respite, crisis services, and individualized caregiver training. Visit them at ASAPCARES.ORG for more information. Cape Fear Harley-Davidson Open House
By: Jeanie Hood-Carter On Saturday May 5th Cape Fear Harley-Davidson in Fayetteville, NC had their annual Open House. I have to admit; I wasn’t looking forward to getting up early on Saturday after a long hard week. With a personal invitation we took off early and arrived about 8am. The entire area was covered with vendors setting up and people getting ready for the day. By 9am people were rolling in and Cape Fear had opened its doors. By 11:00 am people were literally pouring in with a traffic jam on the 2 streets coming into the entrance and the food line was about ½ way around the building. Shortly after noon I got in the line and found the HOG chapter was serving hot dogs with all the trimmings, chips, and ice-cold soft drinks! The dogs were great and the ladies told me they had served over 1000 hot dogs already! You had to wait in line for some time but it was worth it. They had the infamous Wall of Death, The Rogue Rollergirls, 2 helicopters, NASCAR simulator, and live entertainment by Ferinheight Band, as well as a large group of vendors selling things like t-shirts, bottle cap jewelry, sauces, mini massages, health foods, funnel cakes, and ice cream. Rolling Thunder NC Chapter 1 was there, and of course The Bikers For Bikers Foundation. The entire grounds were filled! I made several trips in doors to check out the crowds and the merchandise for the riding season and each time the building was packed. I think every parent there had bought their kids a Harley t-shirt. This was a family event and families were there in full force from great grandparents to babies in strollers! By 3pm there had been several thousand attend and everyone was in the best of spirits as a good time was being had by all. Around 4:00 the winners of the Bike Show, Dyno Shoot Out, cash raffles, and bike raffle were announced. The Cape Fear Harley Owners Group was raffling off a new 2012 Ember Red H-D Switchback and a HOG quilt. Rod Gabric bought one $10 ticket and won it! He was not present, but got excited when they called him on the phone and he came to Cape Fear H-D to claim his new Harley. I did not get the name of the winner of the quilt. The bike show winners are as follows: Sportster: A. Diaz, Dyna: F. Butler, Softail: D. Wolfgang, V-Rod: McLaurin, Antique: K. Hall, Custom: Webster, and Best of Show went to McLaurin. The cash raffle winners were: 1st Place for $1000 - Olen Persons, 2nd Place for $500 – Kenneth Boston, 3rd Place for $250 – Dennis Smillie. Dyno Shoot out King Of The Hill went to Lewis with 102.24 hp from a 103 cu in motor! One thing about Cape Fear H-D is everybody from all around comes to their events, not just people who ride. There were several thousand attendees. The hundreds of bikes that rode in and out throughout the day were just icing on the cake. As always, Cape Fear H-D had a great event and I am so glad I got to go. Shortly afterward, it poured down with a
vicious rainstorm. Guess the Big Man liked the event too, because he spared everyone from the rain until the event was over. It is too bad if you missed this Open House. It was a great day! 4th Annual Miles For Mutts Benefit Ride
By: Scott Wicker When you combine bikers with a beautiful day and a great cause, they show up to support and boy did they ever come out on Saturday, April 14th for the 4th Annual Miles For Mutts Benefit Ride. Over 130 bikes signed up and many more were picked up along the way. A grand total of $8410 was raised. Wow! Way to go everyone. The Humane Society of Alamance County and The Biscuit Foundation were on hand to answer any questions and to welcome and thank everyone for coming out. The Biscuit Foundation received lots of donations of food, collars, leashes, toys, etc. to help support the effort. Gary Poole, Motorcycle Accident Attorney, and Christine were there passing out some really cool towels and magnets and offering legal advise for anyone that needed it. Thanks Gary and Christine, we really appreciate all of your support. Down Home Harley-Davidson was gracious enough to provide a great place for registration plus everyone got to see all of the new Harleys and meet the staff. Everyone received a really nice Dog Tag with the 4th Annual Miles For Mutts logo on it provided by Perry Maffeo of PM Tool and Die when they registered. Tinker led the ride and provided a great route for the poker run. Many commented and said it was the best ride they had ever been on. Thanks, Tinker for making sure everyone had a great experience and a safe ride. Thanks to Pitt Pass Lounge, Mark’s Place, and the Old Ski Lodge for having the beer cold ready when we arrived. As the ride came to the final destination, Cuz’s Tavern in Hopedale, Dale and all of his staff were ready to go. Texas Road House of Burlington was there and stepped up to feed all of the hungry bikers with a GREAT Meal consisting of BBQ ribs, chicken, green beans, corn, salad, and rolls. Thanks to Pete for working himself to a frenzy and setting up the stage and helping with putting together raffle items and a ton of other things to get ready for this event. The bartenders were ready and Graymatter was on stage to play some great music for the crowd while they ate. A big thank you to Dale Bridges and all the folks at Cuz’s Tavern for making this year’s event such a success. When we say there were lots of raffle items, we really mean there were lots. It took a couple of hours just to give it all away! The winner of the poker hand gave it back for the cause along with the winner of the 50/50. Now that’s what it’s all about! There were giveaways being thrown out to the crowd and I don’t think anyone went away empty handed. I think that Jeff and Claire Walker were the lucky winners of the day. They really racked up on some great raffle items. That’s what happens when you buy those raffle tickets folks. A big thanks to everyone that donated all the great items for the raffle.
Kenny Money was our emcee and did a great job of keeping the crowd going and keeping Terri and Kay sane. The day was filled anticipation and excitement as everyone was waiting to see who was going to win the John Deere Z655 zero turn mower. When Randy Davis of Graham was announced the winner, he had left 10 minutes earlier and was not there when his ticket was drawn or to hear his friends boo him because he had won. Randy was thrilled and told us later that he had never won anything before. Congratulations Randy. Will you come and mow all of our yards for free? There was a photo booth at the event for anyone that wanted to have pictures made to commemorate the day and there were a lot of great photos taken. Some we can’t say what they were. When putting together an event like this, Kay and Terri have told me time and time again that it takes a lot of help and support to pull off such a successful event. They try to make sure everyone is recognized and told how much they appreciate their help. So with that said here we go. Thank you to all from the bottom of our hearts that helped with registration, selling T-Shirts, selling 50/50 and raffle tickets, the food, the stage, the venues, and selling the tickets for the mower. Thanks to Tim Freshwater for making our new hopper for all those tickets that were sold for the raffle. This could not have been possible without you. We know that you not only help with this event but many others throughout the summer and beyond. The first Miles For Mutts event was held on his birthday and Dick never told anyone. That is because he was telling everyone that it was his birthday every weekend in April so we never really knew what day it was. 3rd Annual Chuck Shearer Memorial Bike Ride
By: Steve (Leukemia Sucks) Rowland The number of bike rides that go on here in the Carolinas is unbelievable. Today (4.21.12) there were about 21 biker events going on and that’s just the ones that are listed in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Crusin’ Calendar. It’s this fundraiser, or veterans ride, or animal rights or some sort of charity. They all kinda run together, but today it turned out a little different for me. I had been walking around taking pictures and talking to riders all day long. As I was wandering around, an elderly couple asked me over to talk. Nancy and Bud asked me a few questions about The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and how I chose the rides that I want to do. They wanted to thank me for keeping their story out there; Chuck was their son who died of leukemia in 2009. After his death in 2010, they created The Chuck Shearer Leukemia Foundation. Earlier this month they raised $1500 on a Facebook fundraiser. All the money went to Jay’s at Little River, who, in turn, adds it to the money they raise for Camp Kemo. Nancy and Bud talked so proudly of Chuck, said he was the “Go To Guy” in the family. His family wants to keep his memory alive with the foundation. “Paying it forward one day at a time”, that’s their motto. Chuck and his wife, Dayna, moved here in 2006. Their dream was to open a motorcycle shop with their son Brandon. Unfortunately, in 2008 Chuck was diagnosed with leukemia.

After a long two-year battle, it finally took his life. It was a pleasure meeting his parents and family. It brought the whole ride into a new light. There was mom, dad, son, wife, brothers, sister, and extended family all there. Actually seeing where the charity goes is amazing. A lot of the riders have been supporting the fundraiser from the start. For some this was the first time participating. I’m sure not the last. We have to get rid of this stupid cancer. It was a great turnout, lots of people that I have met before, plus a lot of new faces. There were three stops before ending at Jay’s in Little River. On the way to last stop, I was peppered with a little cloud pee pee. So I sezz to myself, “Self, your ass might get wet”. So I headed home and just drove my truck. There were a couple bikes in Jay’s designated bike parking area. The cloud started getting darker and darker as the last riders were heading in. I think the last four bikes came rolling up as it started to come down. Tiger, one of the passengers, said they just beat it, that it just started to rain. We looked over and see her man and couple other guys standing in the rain BS’ing! Maybe they were working on a good ol rain story. We all have them. I think there were 15 bikes out front out of 40. Many people took their bike home, and came back in cages. After Jay Moseley (owner) said a little prayer, he offered up a nice dinner consisting of good old BBQ chicken and all the sides that go with it. They had plenty of door prizes today, and, yes, I won a couple. Some of our advertisers were very supportive of this foundation. Screamin’ Pig, Dirty Dick’s Seafood, and Steel City Service, all handed out a few items. I donated a 2004 Rolling Thunder Poster. One of the riders paid $20 bucks for it, not bad. A gorgeous mirror was auction off for $75. At the beginning of the day $0, at the end of the day $3000. 53 riders on 40 bikes had a great ride, Good Times, good food, and some “have I got my ass wet” stories. Cabana Day June 3RD By: Mark Infield The Ray Price Sprng Open House was held on Saturday, April 21st. This is always a big event and one you should make plans to attend. When I arrived, I had to make two passes up South Saunders Street to find a parking place and bikes were streaming in. It was a sight to see. Vendors lined the street and people were lined up to eat fish on one side and BBQ on the other. There were also vendors in the parking lot and they barely had room for the bike show. The Wells Band was providing the music and there was ice cream and hot dogs and LOH baked goods among the temptations. Inside, the runway for the fashion show was set up on the dragstrip in the center of the dealership with seating on either side. The fashion show went off at noon with an encore performance at 2pm. This was the one year anniversary of the tornado that ripped through Raleigh narrowly missing Ray Price Harley-Davidson on April 18, 2011. We were there and let me tell you it was a real scary experience. Many of the people from the neighborhood were there to remember the event. Eric Bohn from Logic Limo and Jim and Tana Malerba from Coats Body Shop were present. The Caraleigh Community Watch members Mildred Flynn (Chairperson), Connie Crumpler (Vice Chair), Margaret Rose Deans (Secretary), and John G. Reaves Jr. (Treasurer) were present and were commended for their efforts to restore the neighborhood after the storm. Nationwide Insurance was represented by Ray Pennington, Director of Claims for NC, Dave Gainer, Associate Director of claims (David was 1st on site after the tornado and stayed with Mrs. Price until the building could be secured), Bill Stimac, Commercial Property Adjuster, (Bill handled our claim), Jeff Miller, Director Claims, Jay Rabon, Director of NC Sales

I was impressed! American Idol season 11 finalist, Adam Lee Decker sang the National Anthem and did a superb job. Afterwards Kris Weiss, the emcee for the event, announced that Ray Price Harley-Davidson was awarded Silver Bar & Shield Award and that Ray Price Triumph was #1 in the USA for the first quarter of 2012. The fashion show was awesome and everyone involved appeared to be having a blast. The crowd loved it, too! The winners of the Rides of March contest were announced and the bike show winners were also announced and presented trophies. The big event of the day was the HOG Chapter Raffle Bike Giveaway. The lucky ticket belonged to who was not present, but one phone call gave him the news and he was excited! While we were inside a brief shower passed over, but it was nothing compared to the year before! It was over and the sun was shining again as we exited the building. I think that everyone had a good time and appreciated the effort that Ray Price Harley-Davidson put into this event. By: Rose And Lloyd Saturday, May 5th, the 3rd Annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life Charity Ride sponsored by Team Beastmasters was held. Teams from all areas work together to raise money with different events throughout the year. Team Beastmaster, Brent and Michelle Hill of Snow Camp, NC, chose a benefit ride as their charity event. Approximately 20 bikes started out from “Shred It” in Burlington, with escorts by the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department and the Graham Police Department. The ride ended at Off The Vine in Liberty for some great music by CT Music Factory, DJ Tripp Turner. Jack Hill won the 50/50 and donated is winnings back to The American Cancer Society. There were also great raffle prizes from Hooters in Burlington, Advance Auto, O’Reiley’s Auto Parts, Auto Bell Car Wash, Red Lobster and various vendors from Off The Vine. United Riders Riding Club also donated a check for the cause. It was a great day with family and friends for a great cause and to end the day Michelle and Brent had homemade ice cream treat at their home afterwards for everyone. Many thanks to all who were involved and gave of their time and supported this cause. All proceeds go to The American Cancer Society, with a warm heart from the biker community.

By: Raven John Randall (Piney) Dunn, 71, of Rockingham, NC died Saturday, May 5, 2012 in Morrison Manor Hospice Care in Laurinburg. A lifelong resident of Richmond County, Randall was born on June 15, 1940. Prior to becoming disabled he worked for Sumter Builders erecting electrical lines. He was an avid motorcyclist and belonged to Ghost Riders M/C when he passed on. The club wishes to express their sadness in this time with the loss of their Brother in the wind. His Godson, David said, “He was the devil one minute and love you the in the next 15 minutes. He was my best friend in my whole life. I will miss him dearly till we meet again.” His nephew Jim would love to thank everyone who came to show respect to a wonderful man. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorinda Ann Dunn in 2010, which broke his heart. He is survived by a daughter, Donna Altman, and three grandchildren, Blake, Randy, and Hannah Altman and a greatgranddaughter, Arlee Rose.

A Tribute To A Lady Rider

By: Crazy Lady What do you say about a lady who had a smile as big as the world and a heart that was even bigger? Although I had only known her for three years I learned a lot about Vickie. I know that Terry McKinney meet her 16 years ago at Napa Auto and that she had just started ridding and the next 16 years would be a whirl wind of riding and meeting new friends. Vickie and Terry started riding with a group who were simply called The Family
and that group consisted of many throughout those years. There were friends like LH, Shelia & Wayne, Bob & Melinda, Rhonda & Rocky, Will & Crissy just to name a few. There were many more and too many to name them all, but they know who they are and how Vickie touched each and everyone. On Saturday, April 21 a memorial ride was done by about 16 of us that, at some point in time, had ridden with Vickie and Terry. The kickstands went up at 11am from the home of LH, where we rode to Will & Crissy’s house and picked up some
purple bandanas to tie on our bikes in her honor. From there we traveled to Shadow Hawk, a western town that Vickie loved to go to. After spending some time there we then rode to Heidi’s Two Wheel Café where we enjoyed lunch as a family. In 2011 Vickie was diagnosed with Lung Cancer, she received treatment and went into remission. In January 2012 she went back to be checked and make sure she was still in remission. The news she received that day was not good and would devastate her loved ones. The Cancer had returned but it was in her neck, spleen and adrenal glands, she was given at most a year to live. From that time Vickie continued to fight because that was what she was --- a fighter, full of strength, who could conquer anything. Just prior to her passing she became very sick and went to the doctor were they found out she had pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital, where on April 11 2012 she went to be with our Lord and Savior. Vickie loved a lot of things in life, she loved Terry, her kids, and Harley the dog, but she loved being on her pink motorcycle on the open road. She enjoyed attending bike events, the mountains, the beach, and going to ghost towns. She was a great lady who will be missed by loved ones, friends, and co-workers. Vickie you are loved by all and you will be deeply missed by all who know you. Vickie Lynn Puluso is survived by her companion, Terry McKinney, dog Harley, her brother David Clark, her daughter Crystal Saad, her son David Puluso, her biker family, and many friends.

Mark Cox Repeats Victory At Rockingham Dragway
Number One Qualifier, Won Race for Perfect Weekend Mark Cox returned to “The Rock” to collect top honors in the Hawaya Racing/Vreeland Harley-Davidson Pro Drag class at the All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA) Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Carolina Spring Nitro Nationals Presented by The Carolina Harley-Dealers Association on May 5-6 at Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, North Carolina. Cox, a former AHDRA Pro Dragster National Champion, unloaded his PD41 bike off the truck to turn a 7.31 ET qualifying time at 162.55 mph. He stood on his time, which was good for the #1 qualifier position of the weekend in the 11 bike Pro Drag class. In first round eliminations, Cox defeated Peter Stimeling with a 7.298 ET at 172.92 mph. In round two eliminations, Mark faced female rider Carrie Seirfert Tate, a recent graduate of the Hawaya Racing Nitro Bike School. Mark’s 7.167 ET at 168.96 edged Carrie’s strong run of 7.290 at 168.45. Final eliminations slotted Cox against Rich Vreeland. Cox clocked a 7.238 ET at a quick 173.70 mph to win the round and the top Pro Drag honors. “We couldn’t have scripted a better plan for the weekend,” said Mark Cox, a North Carolina native. “This was an extremely competitive race weekend. We had to stay consistent because we had some tough competition. We also dealt with some really hot conditions at the track during qualifying. It was no cakewalk! Rich (Vreeland) did an awesome job at the tree, but my plan to keep a consistent reaction was enough to reel him in for the win!” “It was also a very special win, as I had Recil Cox here supporting me from Cox Harley-Davidson from nearby Asheboro, NC,” added Cox. “I used to ride XR 750’s for Cox H-D in my Pro Dirt Track days. They have always been a very special family.” Cox was riding a Bill Purvis Motorsports Pro Drag HarleyDavidson, tuned and prepared as usual, by Johnny Vickers of Hawaya Racing. “I always enjoy working with Johnny,” said Cox, one of the few members of the elite ‘over 200 mph in under seven seconds’ club of Harley racers. “We just have a certain confidence level in each other that’s a winning combination. ‘We have a new look this year but with our same awesome sponsor, Bojangles’ Restaurant,” added Cox. “The Mark Cox Racing crew did a fantastic job with everything. I also want to thank Bill Purvis for the opportunity to ride his bike. Johnny had a lot of new school graduates riding his bikes that I have ridden in the past. The opportunity came through with Bill Purvis and it proved to be a great bike that brought us another victory at our home track at Rockingham. Al Cloyd Benefit Poker Run
Steve (Colon Cancer Sucks) Rowland April 15th was one of those days that didn’t turn out as I expected. I had headed out to meet with Jay from Jay’s at Little River regarding our May issue. When I arrived, I happened upon a poker run. It was small, about 10 bikes rolled up. They said that a friend had put together a poker ride for Al Cloyd. He was diagnosed with stage 3-colon cancer. Al is only 39 and has been in business locally since 1992. Daniella Ciminillo told me that a few of his friends wanted to help out. We all know the battle of cancer is extremely tough to fight both emotionally and financially. They wanted to show Al how much they appreciate and support him and his wife in this time of need. They only had 10 bikes, but in conjunction with this run there was also a golf cart poker run because Al was in the golf business. The Swing Bridge Saloon was one of the stops, I got there about 15 min before the riders rolled in, I was talking to a retired fire fighter from PA. Ray asked me what was all this about as he had no idea why a bunch of bikers were pulling cards from a pile on a pool table. I showed him all the rides in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Crusin’ Calendar and told him that bikers were out there every week helping someone or some Hospital or trying to raise money to help cure all sorts of diseases. He had no idea that there was this much going on in the biker world. He was so impressed that he donated $20 to the ride. Swing Bridge Saloon is one of those places that, when asked, gives. If it’s not a beginning stop, or a final stop, Jeff (owner) and his crew are available for stops in between. The ride collected a nice chunk of change for Al and his expenses. I didn’t get the information from Daniella, as of this writing, but I did see a bunch of poker hands, that were $20 a hand. Any time I see a bunch of bikers out there raising money for someone else, I like letting you know. By: Caroline On April 21st, Baggerz Saloon celebrated their first year in business with a big party that had all the elements that bikers like. There were vendors selling biker accessories, food, drink specials, bikini bike wash, and a beautiful sunny afternoon to have it on. By time I got there around 3pm, the place was packed, and everyone really was having a great time. Around 5pm, the first ever Miss Baggerz was crowned in a bikini contest. All the girls were just great but local gal, Miranda Grimes was the clear favorite. Cold Heart and Blues Junkiez provided live music and were just awesome. We really have some good musical talent in this area! I know most of you local bikers know where Baggerz Saloon is located but for all you folks new to the area and looking for a great place to party - this is where you want to be. Baggerz Saloon is located at 4212 Ebert Road in WinstonSalem, NC. You can find them on Facebook, and check them out, or keep watching their ad in Full Throttle for more great events.

By: Wendy Rogers On April 28th, the Hogs & Rags Charity Rally had their 7th Annual Ride. This event is part of the Fayetteville, NC Dogwood Festival and seems to get bigger and better every year. This ride supports and donates proceeds to The American Cancer Society, The Shriner’s Hospital for Children, and the Kidsville News Magazine. Don’t let the name fool you; this ride is for any type of motorcycle or car. It doesn’t have to be a Harley or a convertible; you just have to have a compassionate heart, a desire to help those in need, and to get together and socialize with other generous people who all have some of the same interests. Because of the success of this event, it was necessary to coordinate with Sheriffs Departments all the way into South Carolina. The ride started at the Fayetteville Airborne & Special Ops Museum and went to Rocking A Ranch for a country buffet style breakfast. It left there and stopped in Chadbourn for a water break and then proceeded on to Landry’s at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This is where we had lunch and the reverse raffle was drawn. The reverse raffle drew down to the last 5 people and they all were winners, because they choose to split the money. They each received $500 cash. The bike show was just added to the event this year. It was held at Myrtle Beach. We will continue to have a bike show every year and maybe even start a car show, too. A portion of the proceeds from this event went to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, which provides the highest quality of care to children with neuromusculoskeletal disease, burns, and other special needs regardless of their race, color, creed, sex, disability, or ability to pay. They also provide education and research to improve their facilities for the future. For more information go to www.ShrinersHospitalForChildren.org. Marion “Tom” Ballew Jr., who played the part of Santa Claus for 27 years during the annual Smoky Mountain Toy Run was found dead April 28th in his home in Black Mountain. He died of congestive heart failure. Ballew, who would’ve been 58 later this month, was affectionately called “Santa Tom” for his longtime involvement in the toy run. Family and friends gathered Tuesday evening May 1st at Calvary Baptist Church in Swannanoa, NC for a memorial service in his honor. Santa Tom will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.
