EDITOR’S LETTER Aah, Spring, what promise you bring. The sartorial season blossoms as the SS15 collections start trickling into stores, new horizons beckon and the spring clean begins. Out with the old and in with the new, it’s a colloquial we all know too well but one that rings true. Which is why we’ve raided the work wardrobe to bring you this season’s must-have key pieces in Who, What, Wear on page 20. But no outfit is complete without the perfect bag so we’ve taken care of that for you too. Turn to page 6 now. As promised we bring you our guide to Las Palmas, the picturesque city in the Canary Islands (page 8). While our travel correspondent Shauna Logie relives her luxe stay at the Hotel Bel-Air in California (page 12). Then it’s on to Nagoya in Japan for sushi and sightseeing (page 16). Also in this issue we talk to the husband and wife duo behind the achingly majestic perfume, M.Micallef on page 28. Speaking of fragrances we also delve behind the beauty counter to bring you fresh finds (page 30) and fabulous facials (page 32). What’s more is, for those reading this issue of The Cash Collective online, don’t forget to download the app now, which is available on the Apple App store, because this issue along with issues 7, 8 and 9 are now live. To those reading us on the app, bravo, and thank you for the download.

BEL AIR CITY GUIDE
WE’RE ON NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH IN THIS PICTURESQUE US CITY
Tucked away on 12 acres of beautifully lush landscaped gardens in the heart of Bel Air, is where you’ll find this hidden gem of a hotel. Newly-refurbished, Hotel Bel-Air is known as one of the most beautiful and romantic hotels in the world, complete with its very own swan lake (pictured). Luring the rich and famous to this Hollywood hideaway for years, it was originally built in 1922, and thankfully this magical hotel with a Spanish-Mediterranean twist still carries some of that old Hollywood glamour. A class all it’s own, from the minute you check in you’ll feel as though you’ve arrived at a retreat, and you’ll never want to leave. Once inside your room or suite, which are cosy yet very elegant, discover the state of the art appliances, television in the bath and a private enclosed lush garden patio, indoor and outdoor fireplaces and large jacuzzis. We told you you’d never want to leave! Hungry? The food is to die for and makes a visit to the hotel well worth it just to eat. After all the outlets are managed by world-renowned chef, Wolfgang Puck, who is known for his exceptional culinary cuisine. Oh and did we mention the dog walking services, pool side refreshments including ice cream sundaes and frozen grape skewers, a sunglasses cleaning service, special children’s amenities, in-room salon services, babysitting services and personal fitness training? Uh huh, this place really is the ultimate in luxury. Situated on Stone Canyon Road, just minutes from Beverly Hills, it’s so close to all of the fame and fun, yet it feels as if you’re far away in some magical fairy land. We’ll definitely be back.

TALKING POINT : M.MICALLEF
Q&A
MARTINE MICALLEF & GEOFFREY NEJAMN The co-founders behind the perfume house M.Micallef talk oud, art and how to really smell a scent.
What is it about perfume that appeals to you? Geoffrey: Perfume has to remain a little bit mysterious. Our new scent has a secret ingredient, it’s very special, unusual, a spicy note with lots of facets. What type of ingredients do you use? Martine: We use a lot of natural ingredients. This makes a difference because they mix with your pH to create your own personal scent. What’s the best way to really smell a scent? Geoffrey: Spray perfume into a crystal jar. Crystal is a good conveyor of smell.
Do you use oud alot in your perfumes? Geoffrey: We were the first ones twelve years ago to mix oud with French perfume. We were very intrigued by the oil so we took it back to our lab in France. My senior nose looked at how it could be mixed with French formulations and it was a big success the way we married two cultures – French and
When you started experimenting with Oud, how long did it take to perfect? It took some time. It’s a very powerful ingredient and you have to balance it the right way. It had to be finetuned and the whole exercise took about six months. Then it sold like hot cakes. How did you fall into the fragrance industry? Geoffrey: We were not perfumers. Martine had a beauty salon in France and I came from the banking world. My first experiences in perfume were as a financial consultant, when I was asked to look at the finances on a lab in Grasse – it’s the capital of perfume. I spent most of my time sneaking out of the office and into the lab. This was a turning point in my career. That was back in 1996. Why did you settle on a namesake? Martine: I was an artist and that was the name I used then. At the beginning I really wanted to make art and perfume. Your bottles are beautiful pieces of art. What inspires you to create them? Martine: I like to paint. I enjoy painting flowers, butterflies and falcons. For information on M.Micallef visit mmicallef.com. ISSUE 10 I THE CASH COLLECTIVE . COM
INTERVIEW BY SHANNON WYLIE, PHOTO SUPPLIED.
What are your favourite scents? Martine: I like flowers, rose in particular. Geoffrey: I fancy woody notes, I like to work with patchouli, sandalwood and oud is very intriguing. You will also find a touch of vanilla in our mix.
Middle Eastern – it was a message in a bottle. But now the market is full of oud.

HIS AND HERS
FACIALS
TRIED AND TESTED, TWO TREATMENTS, TWO NOTEWORTHY RESULTS When the subject of facials is raised, people generally respond in one of two ways, a haphazard, “oh, I’ve never had one”, or, “ouch, doesn’t it hurt?” As someone who religiously seeks out facials, I for one preach their benefits. Consistantly clear skin, deep hydrating boosts of moisture and a glowing complexion, once the redness has reduced. See, there are positives and pits when it comes to a good beauty treatment. However, as far as facials go, besides extractions, non-surgical treatments are quite simply painless. So The Cash Collective headed to Biolite, Dubai, to try out two different facials, one for him and one for her. MICRODERMABRASION This non-invasive treatment starts with a cleanse of the skin. This is essential to remove any particles that may be lying on the top layer of the epidermis. Then a machine is activated that works in tiny motions over your entire face sucking at your skin in a vacuum-like manner. This process also involves a simultaneous jet of fine crystals being brushed across the skin to remove any dead and dry layers, which are then removed by the vacuum. Once the skin has been treated, the therapist applies a soothing moisturiser to combat the freshly cleaned skin.

As far as expert exfoliations go they don’t get much better or more luxurious then this, so it’s ideal for women who need that extra sparkle. It’s also recommended for men too. DERMASWEEP This treatment works best as a series but for men who are being introduced to facials for the first time, it’s a great starting point. Plus you won’t need to lie there for hours as it’s a quick 30-minutes so you can pop in during lunchtime. So what is dermasweep? Another form of exfoliation, this specialised device works to remove the top layer of skin along with any signs of visible sun damage and uneven skin tone. After the treatment a moisturiser is applied as your skin can feel quite tight. It’s important to continue to moisturise during the days just after the treatment too to ensure the skin’s condition is maintained. The results? Skin that is visibly cleaner, cleansed and rehydrated.
