EDITOR’S LETTER It’s an exciting time of year! Now that we’re over the initial fright that another digit has been docked on the calendar, March brings a sense of structure, stamina and a serious outlook on the next nine months. In order to stay focused and win the wager, we’ve dedicated this issue to staying fit, fabulous and fierce. Kicking off on the cover is our sport-inspired shoot, of the very chic cycle kind. We teamed up with The Movement, who create beautiful bicycles, for one aspirational approach to getting outdoors. Turn to page 18 to see the cycle set and be inspired. Then we sat down to lunch at Almaz by Momo with Nathalie Trad to talk all things health, handbags and her Harvey Nichols’ SS15 launch (page 28) – a must-have clutch collection. Speaking of nosh, we also experienced one enigmatic dinner show at The Act. With a new theme, mouthwatering menu and mesmerising performers, this is one night out to splurge. Everyone needs a night off, on a night out (page 32). Fashion and fitness are having a major moment, from Puma’s new collaboration with Alexander McQueen (page 4) to our top designer digs to take to the gym (page 6). Beauty too hit the base notes, which are ideal for peak performance (page 30). Last but not least our city guides this month take us to three cities – Seychelles, Banff and Bangkok – where it’s all about snorkelling, skiing and sightseeing – the ultimate adventure holidays, however you choose to experience them. Until next month enjoy The Cash Collective online and on app, kick some goals and go get ‘em.

TALKING POINT : CLUTCH CONFIDENTIAL

Q&A

NATHALIE TRAD The Cash Collective sat down to lunch at Harvey Nichols, Dubai, the first store in the world to launch the SS15 collection by the Beirut-born designer...

What inspired your SS15 collection? The overarching theme in all of my collections is geometric – it runs through my veins. And it’s always been about art deco. This one more specifically was Navajo art infused with pop art and optical illusion art. This allows you to feel a movement in the bag while it’s still. You primarily use shell in your creations. How did you discover this technique? When I moved back to Dubai from New York in 2012 I had sketches but I had no idea where I was taking it in terms of material. I’d try different things but they were never really what I wanted. My mother has a flower shop in Dubai and she has beautiful vases and elements that are made of shell, so I decided to call the manufacturer. He guided me to a factory in the Philippines. How long did the whole process take? One week later I was in the Philippines with my designs trying to make the pieces. Then about four moths later I had the prototypes in hand. It took time for people to warm up to the collection at first but it was a domino effect. A lot of things happened in the first two years, good and bad. It’s quite surreal. What’s next for you? It’s important to show people that I’m consistent. Everyone wants to see that I can keep going with what I’ve started 28

THE CASH COLLECTIVE . COM I ISSUE 11

– stay consistant, stay true to myself, stay true to the brand’s DNA. Hopefully I’ll expand in the future, perhaps homewares, but not anytime soon. How does your design process flow? When I’m designing it’s important for me to forget that I’m designing a clutch because there’s so many constraints when you think about a bag. We’re designing a piece first and foremost and then function follows. I like to stay curious and stay creative. What’s your advice for selecting a bag? The most important thing for me is that people recongise themselves in a bag. It’s not about a name, it’s not about a trend. For me the bags that I create, without sounding pretencious, are heirlooms. I want it to be something that you can keep for a very long time, that you can pass on. I want the piece to be an extension of who you are. I want you to really feel some sort of chemistry. Did your mum hand down a bag to you? It wasn’t a bag but it was the bangles that I wear (pictured). She bought them when she was about my age, in a Souq and now I never take them off. So yeah, there are a few special pieces that I enjoy wearing because there’s something more than just the material in it, it’s the meaning behind it.

What are three things you always travel with? A clutch for sure. Oxfords, because they’re the perfect pair to wear without being in heels. And always a piece of home, maybe a piece of jewellery my husband’s given me or something that just warms my heart when I’m away. What does your husband think of all of your handbags? I don’t have any handbags! I just pick them from our sample collection. But he’s been extremely supportive and helps a lot on a day to day basis. He has a consultant background, so it can be very handy.

What does your typical day look like? No two days look a like. Right now we’re in the lead up to Paris Fashion Week so it’s quite hectic: working until 4am, photoshoots, colour corrections, getting everything on point, then I work from home once I’m out of the office. How do you stay energised? I never used to drink coffee, so now I have an espresso in the morning and that keeps me awake. The most important thing for me, I know it’s cheesy, but hugs. I need my hugs, I really do! For information on Nathalie Trad visit nathalietrad.com.

What’s your fitness routine? I never have a routine, it’s so up and down. I try and go to the gym at night because I’m not a morning person. I try and go three times a week but I’m not always very successful.

INTERVIEW BY SHANNON WYLIE, PHOTO SUPPLIED.

And your food routine? I don’t have much time to cook, but when I do I try and keep it simple: steamed vegetables, quinoa, protein that I like to grill and infuse with a bit of flavor to keep it a bit more exciting.

Choosing a good powder can be tricky. It needs to be the perfect colour, consistancy and photograph well, naturally. Gucci have, of course, created a luxe finishing powder that does just the trick. Thanks to its ability to absorb oil, apply it pre or post workout, just remember to cleanse and rehydrate your skin at the end of the day.

Dreaming of far away lands while you get fit and fabulous? Let Roberto Cavalli’s Paradiso transport you somewhere tropical. Say, the Mediterranean? It’s where the jasmine blossoms and the fresh sea air penetrates every breath.

REVIEW

PRESENTING

THE ACT

LIGHTS, CURATIN, ACTION...

Welcome to The Act! A concept that has existed for centuries has been brought to life in an animatic array of acrobatics, singing, dancing and dinner. Nestled on the 42nd floor of the ShangriLa Hotel you’ll be whisked up in a private elevator where you’ll step out into a dimly lit den of decadence. A complete 360 degree view of The Act shows a lovely room from the bar to the stage. Above the bar is a sign, a pulse point of note. Above the schmoozing crowd, who are engrossed in vino and varieties of starters, are an array of breathtaking chandeliers adding to the charm of the theatre. There isn’t a bad seat in the house! As the curtain lifts the chandeliers dim and the show begins. A play about a girl band on the rise, this is one very entertaining and interactive show – yes, with the audience in tow. Be brave, be bold if you attempt to tell a joke. The service? The wait staff are on their game. They know the menu intimately and when asked a couple of tricky questions there was no hesitation on the answer. Not to mention everybody is dressed to the theme of The Act – edgy and fun. And the food... While The Cash Collective was able to sample a good variety of the menu (pictured) from starters, mains and desserts, we would happily recommend them all. The variety was fantastic; the flavors and paring of different ingredients outstanding; the presentation not to be forgotten and the attention to detail, suberb. 32

We musn’t forget the drinks, either. Again the wait staff are excellent at pairing a variety of beverages to go with each meal. From the wine to the cocktails there’s a drop to suite every tast. Before too long the curtain drops calling an end to the night. But thankfuly every few months a new theme awaits. We’ll be back next time.
