ALANOUD: LADY FOZAZA TV THE LONGCHAMP LIFE ISTANBUL TOP 10 EMERGING DESIGNERS COLOMBO VOGUE DUBAI IN PICTURES DOHA

EDITOR’S LETTER Quite frankly this issue is nothing short of star-studded. We’re talking celebrities of the supermodel and designer kind who ascended on Dubai for the Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience. I caught up with the Victoria’s Secret Angel Karolina Kurkova, who by the way really is super tall. Then it was straight into a snap and chat with MSGM’s Massimo Giorgetti at Bloomingdale’s and a quick catch up with Shourouk and Zayan at S*uce. All of this, as well as the runway show and talks by some of the industry’s greatest – think Roberto Cavalli, Alberta Ferretti and Peter Dundas – have been documented in one stunning showcase of pictures starting on page 34, so flip over there now. In this issue we also chat candidly to over cover star Alanoud, on starring in her first ever Lady Fozaza-inspired YouTube reality television show. Turn to page 28 to read more. Speaking of stars, we took inspiration from the night sky for our fashion shoot. To make it possible our photographer Cameron Clegg used the utterly ingenious Petzval by Lomography Art Lense. This is one shoot you won’t want to miss, so take a peek on page 20. Then it’s on to profiling the emerging stars of tomorrow. Over the past year we’ve been watching and observing the international fashion hubs in hope that we might find some new and truly creative talents arise. We’re happy to say that we have indeed come across ten top new designers who we think are, product by product, taking their local scene by storm. Finally, I just want to thank everyone who has helped make The Cash Collective a success over the past year. This time last year we published our first issue and the celebrations are only just beginning. We did it!

NAMES YOU NEED TO KNOW NOW

Tavi Noir, socks

If we were to profile Charlotte Hobgood (pictured) we would say she’s the wife of professional surfer Damien Hobgood and mother of three to Savanna, 8, Colt, 5, and Cheyenne who is due on December 23. But it’s her entrepreneurial skills that have 14

taken this Californian girl from the barre to the bar, in some very stylish socks. Let us explain! As the founder and creator of the hottest new sock label, Tavi Noir, Charlotte developed her brand out of a need for grippy socks. “I’ve been a barre instructor for almost seven years and during class you have to wear grippy socks so that you can hold positions and don’t slide. Yet, the only socks out there were ankle high and not very cute,” said Charlotte. “But finding a unique name was much harder to do. So a friend said: ‘You like Pino Noir wine, so why not Noir?’ Then at the time, my husband was

surfing in Tavarua and the nickname for Tavarua is Tavi. The funny thing was, is that once I looked up what ‘Tavi Noir’ meant, it said ‘good drama’ in Aramaic. I laughed because that is what this journey has been for me – good drama.” The Tavi Noir collection currently inlcudes four styles in two colour ways and in mid-November they’re launching three more styles, making this brand one to watch. Also in the yet-to-be-launched issue of The Cash Collective we speak to Charlotte about how she juggles being a mum, business woman and wife. So stay tuned! tavinoir.com

This Australian-based brand is the brainchild of Isabelle Guillemot and Lucina Mason. The creative talents and business partners met while studying at The Whitehouse Institute of Design, Sydney. “We decided to go into business together but with the vision of initially having brand presence in Dubai, Australia and New Zealand as we have roots in these countries,” said Isabelle, who spent three years in Dubai prior to moving back to Australia. Now the duo have just launched their ready to wear collection in Dubai’s O Concept store. “O Concept has always been supportive of up and coming designers and our aesthetics are aligned – a love of the industrial chic and minimalism teamed with a quirky edge,” continued Isabelle. The mens and womenswear label is a fun yet stylish mix of dresses, denim, shorts, shirts and skirts which work back seamlessly into any wardrobe. deadlycompanions.com

TOP TEN: EMERGING DESIGNERS

Jasper Eales Originals, design solutions

This South African surfer has transferred his passion for chasing waves into a passion for creating clean-cut nature-inspired designs for the home. His board racks, flower vases (pictured) and quirky ornaments are just some of the pieces that are turning Jasper into a household name. “I believe in functional spaces that encourage a desired flow and usability,” he said. “So in terms of decorating I make use of pieces that complement the space and its surroundings.” Surroundings (and the surf) are something that Jasper is very aware of, most of the time. “While surfing a perfectly shaped sand-bottom point, in a notoriously sharky river mouth up the East Coast of South Africa, my mates and I caught multiple perfect waves over a few hours. Our arms struggled to paddle us back to shore but once we did a fellow bystander came over and said a Great White shark double the length of my board had just swum underneath me.” Close call, Jasper! jasperealesoriginal.com

Pichulik, jewellery

Not only was this bespoke South African-based jewellery brand nominated as the most beautiful local object in 2013, but Pichulik already has an impressive celebrity following including Solange Knowles and Hannah New. The bright and bold brand “which essentially emerged in India,” said Pichulik’s Katherine-Mary, is also all about the relationship women have with jewellery. “It should feel as though it is a part of you. Highlight your colouring, your eyes and the nape of your neck.” “Jewellery is not a necessity and there is something quite beautiful about that. It’s about the way it makes you feel. On my second trip to India I re-adapted a camel bell into a neckpiece. It rings when I move and reminds me of Pushkar and the incredible synergy there.” pichulik.com

Miss Milne, fashion

Based out of Bali, Indonesia, since 2005, British Helen Milne’s eponymous label is the perfect blend of colour teamed with creative cuts and impeccable finishings. “Bali is an inspirational design hub and the fashion scene is quite diverse,” said Helen. “When you delve a little deeper into the lives of the people working and producing out of Bali there is a plethora of very unique, quite distinct and incredibly talented designers.” “Yet, the initial scent on the street is a laid back bohemian elegance, loose fitted girly shapes paired with a shot of rock and roll,” of which Miss Milne certainly fits the frock talk. Yet, as a point of difference, the brand offers: “something polished with a punch.” Touche! missmilne.co.uk ISSUE 8 I THE CASH COLLECTIVE . COM

The Hot Box, activewear

Hannah Swales (pictured) is taking activewear to a whole new level of fit and fabulous in Dubai. “The Dubai fitness scene is growing fast,” confirmed Hannah who in parallel to the expansion is making it her aim to dress the “rebelles” that take to the gym, courts, barre and yoga mats. “A rebelle is a beautiful soul forging her own path in the world, by channeling her feminine strength.” Whether you’re looking for leggings and a tee or an action-back top and harem pants, The Hot Box has an eye-popping range of styles in electric prints and patterns. Your gym kit will thank you. thehotboxkit.com

Roula Dfouni, jewellery Organic and earthy best describe the pieces that make up the Roula Dfouni collection. The business woman turned jewellery designer is all about making sure her pieces, while rough and rare, amount to something special and unique. “While the materials I use are conventional, accessible, one could even say simple, the results are anything but,” said Roula. “Geometric forms are a constant thread throughout my work and I combine these with the earthy, unfinished feel of rough gemstones.”

18

Roula then uses silver to finish her pieces (pictured right) – a techinque she refined through a series of intensive courses at the fashion and design school, ESMOD Beirut. Roula currently has an exhibition, Construct -Deconstruct, in New York at the DRAFT Space Delicious Objects event in The Highline Loft from Thursday, November 13 to Sunday, November 16, 2014. The Roula Dfouni collection can also be found in stores across Europe, the Middle East and online. rouladfouni.com

Caroline Seikaly, fashion

As far as status goes, Caroline has “made it” in the world of fashion. She launched her eponymous label five years ago and celebrities including Madonna, Mila Kunis and Nancy Ajram have worn her clothing. However, it was her years working under two elite designers, in particular, that add to her story. “My years at Lacroix and Lagerfeld were the most enriching of my career,” she said. “It has shaped the way I design and work with my team,” she continued. “Christian Lacroix taught me how to use vibrant colours and draping with the fabrics like a painter or sculptor would. Karl Lagerfeld taught me how to construct a garment for a perfect fit – it’s a more architectural way of designing.” These skills are clearly evident in how Caroline designs today. Take note! carolineseikaly.com

Alanoud’s dual-language – she interchanges between English and Arabic flawlessly – subscription-based channel FozazaTV is a reality-style show which goes behind the scenes with the budding actress as she goes about her day in the studio and inside her home. “My show is essentially the first online ‘reality fashion’ channel of its kind here in the region,” said Alanoud. The channel which went live on September 23, currently attracts just shy of one million viewers per episode. So how long does it take to film? “Because it’s unscripted and it’s so natural it sometimes depends on the situation, the mini drama or the dilemma of the day.” Inside her home, Alanoud’s candid chats leave nothing to the imagination and

she says: “It’s strange having the camera around at first but it helps to know them.” Splitting her time between Saudi Arabia and Dubai Alanoud explains the importance of living across borders. “I’m half Saudi, half Lebanese so I often travel to Saudi to visit family, but Dubai is my home, it’s where my business is and the fashion hub of the Middle East so it’s important for me to have a presence here.” And while she’s pro profiling Dubai as a fashion hub, there’s a consensus in the region that the focus needs to shift. “I love that other countries are taking inspiration from what we are creating here in the Middle East but it’s also time we bring more to them, than they bring out to us. However overall I dislike how underestimated we are in this region and feel the designers here deserve a bigger platform to present their collection to the world, and again not only in this region.” Yet, the Lady Fozaza jackets are already gaining international cred with celebrities alike including Kim Kardashian, Lebanese pop singer Nancy Ajram and recently Lady Gaga who have all been spotted sporting them. “I’m so flattered and honored when I see celebrities wearing my blazers, it’s so great to know that I have this support and they like my designs. Gaga was spotted in the KONG blazer in Stockholm, it was amazing (pictured). I chose it for her as I think it really suits her edgy and eclectic taste and she looked incredible in it,” confirmed Alanoud, who is now busy planning a new range. “I’m really excited about my new blazer collection coming out in November, which is the festive collection! Also I’m launching my upcoming jewellery line with L’Azurde. There’s a lot more to come on FozazaTV too.” There’s no news as to whether the online show will develop into a primetime position but for now she says: “As for TV? Who knows, maybe one day.” youtube.com/FozazaTV

Alanoud On… Her personality: Designer, dreamer, survivor Entreprenuerial advice: My advice is that if you are passionate, committed and prepared to work hard I truly believe you can achieve your dreams. It’s not easy and there are always challenges along the way, but the people who believe in you and support you make it all worthwhile. Creating compelling content: To me, compelling content is something that’s real and personal, my show is unscripted and natural. Travel essentials: Sanitizer, Guerlain bronzer and mints. One thing people don’t know about you: In reality I’m very shy and terrified of public speaking!

TALKING POINT : THE LONGCHAMP LIFE

Q&A

SOPHIE DELAFONTAINE Longchamp’s Creative Director chats about her family business and how they reinterpreted the iconic Le Pliage bag in celebration of the line’s 20th anniversary.

What does Longchamp mean to you? I was immersed in the world of Longchamp from my earliest years. With my parents and two brothers, we lived above the tobacco store on boulevard Poissonnière where, in 1948, my grandfather founded Longchamp, selling leather-covered pipes to Allied soldiers after the liberation of Paris.

companion that they feel pretty and comfortable with. Men should look not only for the perfect shape or colour but also for great quality.

What was the first handbag that left you with treasured memories and why? One day, I suggested that we make a transparent Pliage. My father and brother were dubious. So they challenged me to a dare: “If you agree to put your personal affairs in a transparent bag and show everybody what you have inside for eight days, we will add it to the collection.” Of course, I took them up on it. So we produced a transparent version of Le Pliage, with an advertisement featuring a photo of a bag filled with water, transformed into a goldfish bowl. It was a very poetic photo. I think it made a profound impression on the public.

What is the key to picking the right handbag for an outfit or occasion? A bag is a representation of a woman and a very personal intimate object as it contains all her secrets. For several years now, the bag has become a true fashion accessory and, gradually, it has probably become the most important element to any look. A bag can really reflect the mood you are in: a clutch for a sophisticated look or a hobo bag for a casual look.

When investing in a handbag, what should men and women look for? Women should look for a true

Longchamp has just teamed up with American artist Sarah Morris. What was it about Sarah that you enjoyed most about working with her? Her precision, use of colour and attention to detail. We gave her a “carte blanche” and I have been liaising with our workshops to make sure that the collection reaches Sarah Morris’ expectation as well as Longchamp’s craftmanshift standards.

What three items do you always travel with? My iPhone, my cashmere top and “L’Eau d’Hadrien” d’Annick Goutal.

What’s one thing people don’t know about you? When I’m stressed I get a manicure and pedicure if my timetable allows it.

As well, if Dean and Dan’s previous scents are anything to go by then this will fast become a favourite. We think the bottle is pretty cool too. The only downside is it’s not in stores until late November.

REVIEW

MAKE ME

MOBILE

TRIED AND TESTED WE LEAD YOU DOWN THE TECH WORMHOLE! Over the space of one month The Cash Collective team traded in personal mobile phones and touch pads in exchange for three different devices. Here’s our review... ACER ICONIA ONE 7 Similar in size to the Apple iPad mini but semingly more affordable, the Acer Iconia One 7, is a device we’d happily add to our repertoire of work tools. The system itself works on the android platform so if you, like us, are used to Apple then it does take a bit of getting used to, but it’s well worth it. So what are the feature benefits? To start with the device comes with 16GB of flash memory and a dual camera, which means that it gets the selfie tick from us. Oh, and just incase you do run out of space there’s a micro SD memory card for extended storage. Bonus! Overall the practical on-the-go stayconnected device is a winner and we’ve officially added it to our christmas wish list. acer.ae

REVIEW

ASUS ZENPHONE 5 The lovely large screen allows for premium viewing, so you can inspect every last inch of your images before posting them to social media. The built in camera also snaps away at 8MP per image with up to 400 per cent more brightness, so images when you’re out and about at night are pretty impressive. Oh, and when you accidently drop your phone we can’t promise it won’t break but the Asus Zenphone 5 is made with a new damage and scratch resistant glass. Operating on the Android system as well, the device comes equipped with 3G, WLAN and bluetooth. The most impressive part of the phone however, might just be the ZenUI technology that Asus have developed to help you keep your life more organised. We’re talking app integration, a seemless user face and the ‘open cloud’ so you can store all of your files in one place too. asus.com ISSUE 8 I THE CASH COLLECTIVE . COM

WIKO HIGHWAY SMARTPHONE Already attracting the label of ‘Europe’s fastest growing smartphone brand’, Wiko is an andriod device with more on offer than most phones, including a dual sim card option. This is perhaps one of our favourite features on the device as it allowed us to separate our personal lives from our work. Other noteworthy attractions are the camera, which comes with a whopping 16MP resolution and full HD. The operating platform itself is really easy to menouver around and it’s difficult to overload the device, which is a plus for when you have multiple programs open including social media and of course, thecashcollective.com. Physically the Wiko Highway smartphone has a great screen resolution and although it may be larger than most regular touch phones it is a welcomed sight. wikomobile.com
