EDITOR’S LETTER From the wonders of Petra, Jordan, to the stunning shores of Da Nang, Vietnam, this issue of The Cash Collective brings you a veritable smorgasbord of sights to see. Turn to page 8 now to get inspired and start planning your next holiday. Even The Collective on page 6 has all of the essentials to pack for your next luxury week away. This month we also spoke to Dr. Michael Apa about teeth and how to get that perfect smile (page 28). Which you’ll need when you venture to the GQ Bar Dubai (page 32). Brimming with beautiful people this is the bar to see and be seen at. Speaking of beautiful bodies, our fashion shoot is a homage to Swan Lake with a very modern day muse twist. Layers of white and pink lace have been juxtaposed against stark neutral cottons. These light, layered looks are finished with the ballet shoe du jour, Repetto. Flip to page 20 now. As I write this I’m on a plane jetting to Sri Lanka, where white sandy beaches and sparkling surf await. Postcards are waiting for you via Instagram @thecashcollective.

TALKING POINT : THE PERFECT SMILE
Q&A
DR. MICHAEL APA He’s just opened his new Dubai dentistry with his own dental products to follow, but here the New York-based aesthetic expert Dr. Michael Apa talks to The Cash Collective about teeth, dentists and why it’s OK to eat chocolate...
What is it about a person’s smile that makes them unique? Everything! I like to think that the way somebody smiles and the actual anatomy of someone’s teeth, which makes up their smile, have personality. How do you choose a good dentist? It’s the hardest thing in the world. If you’re not happy with your current dentist then act quickly; don’t keep going back for abuse, change dentists.
Is it OK to buy dental products from the supermarket? Yes, definitely. I mean it’s archaic but yes. How are you supposed to brush teeth? I would say that about two per cent of the world’s population really knows how
And if you’re brushing manually? Small circles at a forty-five degree angle and along the gum line for two minutes. What about using charcoal? No, it’s ridiculous. It’s disgusting to use and it’s a definite ploy. Something that is good is hydroxyapatite. It’s the cell that teeth are made of and now a few select high end brands are using hydroxyapatite to replace fluoride. It’s pretty groundbreaking. What’s your opinion on teeth whitening? Whether you use kits or go to the dentist, they use the same ingredients; dentists just have a stronger solution. So what teeth whitening does is open the pore, place bleach in the tooth, which breaks up bigger molecules into smaller molecules, so instead of those molecules absorbing light, they reflect light, which makes your teeth look whiter. It’s not actually bleaching, like you would when you dunk a white shirt in bleach. It doesn’t cause any permanent sensitivity, it causes temporary sensitivity. It doesn’t do anything to the enamel either.
INTERVIEW BY SHANNON WYLIE, PHOTO SUPPLIED.
What are the best foods to eat to maintain healthy teeth? Ones without sugar in them. But let me ask you a different question, that will answer this question: ‘What’s the worst thing you can do for your teeth?’ Be healthy! Healthy people eat small meals all throughout the day, but it’s the worst thing for your teeth. Even if you’re eating fruit, it has sugar in it, so if you’re introducing small amounts of sugar to your teeth throughout the day, that’s what breaks your teeth down quickly. Even if you’re going to eat chocolate, it’s better to eat it all at once then to snack.
to brush their teeth. Of that two per cent I don’t know how many are actually brushing for two minutes. So use an electric toothbrush, they’re foolproof.

Stylish, sweet, sour and seriously delicious best describes the tempting cocktails and canapés at the enigmatic GQ Bar Dubai, which is precisely why you’d venture to this suave set up. Buzzing with the beautiful crowd, the GQ Bar is named after the highly successful international magazine of the same name and it’s fast become a draw card in the city. The Cash Collective visited on Ladies’ Night, yes that means complimentary beverages from 6-10pm and 50 per cent off the à la carte dinner menu. First we sampled the 9-1-9 (pictured). It’s a sweet mix of apricot, hibiscus, apricot, cherry and lemon as well as An Unusual Picnic: Hendrick’s, chamomile tea syrup, lemon, green apple, strawberry and mint. Next up was the utterly impressive Mezcal Aparente. Appearing in clouds of smoke, the Jose Tradicional, Ramazotti, agave syrup, plum and cherry bitters and smoked hickory mix is a must order. To round out the drinks order of the night we ordered the Stay Calm, a tasty mix of Cariel vanilla, green tea liqueur, kiwi, lemon and apple juice. For savoury snacks we noshed on the lamb kofta with raita sauce and the farm chicken skewers with harissa and lime dip. So if you find yourself in need of a hot spot to wine and dine at, the GQ Bar Dubai ticks all of the boxes.
