MUA MUA DOLLS AW FASHION SINGAPORE BEAUTY BEATS LONDON CELEBRITY JEWELS GENEVA

EDITOR’S LETTER Welcome to issue 6 of The Cash Collective. Inside this edition Kaiser Karl Lagerfeld, not the man himself but his rather smaller and cuter look-a-like becomes the subject of adoration and rightly so. Discover the story behind the designer doll that has the fashion pack talking on page 26. As I write, I am in Singapore scouting out one of our three cities of culture this month. It’s inspiring to see a country, never mind a city, so small steeped in so much culture and in a perpetual state of growth lying beneath the canopy of its jungle-esque exterior. Turn to page 8 to discover the best (albeit the tip of the iceberg) this city has offer. Earlier this year we also nipped off to London (see page 10) to explore everything consumable – we’re talking fashion and food – to prep you for you next long weekend in the buzzing British city. Geneva was also on our hit list and contributing writer Kirsty Grainger gives us the inside goss on the Swiss city (page 12). Our September issue, which also happens to be our sixth, starts and ends as always with lashings of fashion. From ready-to-wear clothing and accessories for him and her to our 12-page fashion shoot which was shot on location at Level 43, Four Points by Sheraton, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, we hope you enjoy the read.

COVER FEATURE : A TOY STORY

dollnation THESE LITTLE (AND OH SO CUTE) MONSTERS ARE HER MUSE, BUT WHAT’S THE REAL STORY BEHIND LUDOVICA VIRGA’S MUA MUA DOLLS? AND WHY IS KARL LAGERFELD BUYING THEM UP IN THE BULK LOAD? THE CASH COLLECTIVE HAS THE WORD FROM INSIDE THE DESIGNER TOY BOX...

Back in May 2013, amidst the Chanel Cruise show, the ‘frow’ was adorned in mini Karl and Coco Chanel knitted dolls. A scene that had even the clackers talking! But step back a few years to 2009 – just a short flight from where the Singapore show took place – to the achingly chic island of Bali and you’ll discover the real story behind the ‘toy’ that is now burgeoning on ‘it’ status. Mua Mua dolls (pronounced “mwah mwah” – like an air kiss) are the brainchild of Ludovica Virga – or Luvi for short – and they’re just as much an advocate as they are aficionado. The ethos behind the house of dolls is one of charity and the subject, well, fashion’s elite. Think Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Wintour, Lady Gaga and even the Queen (pictured) have become the subject of stitching. Yet, as Luvi says: “Fashion is not to be taken seriously.” The many faces of Mua Mua are actually behind the chic exterior of the dolls. “After the Bali bombings of 2002 and 2005, tourism had shrunk and locals – especially women – had fallen on hard times.” After noticing the many Balinese wandering the beach touting their wares, Luvi decided to commission a doll from

one woman in particular who had been making “dated crochet bikinis” as she recalls. “The first satirical doll depicted a close friend,” says Luvi recalling the time from 2006. For the next three years dolls were made but only for local tourists and friends. Nonetheless it was a step to “support woman’s financial independence and education.” Then in 2009 the Mua Mua doll was born. Luvi was invited to attend the Chanel fashion show in Venice and as a gift for King Karl she prepared a doppelganger of the designer, aptly named Kaiser Karl. As the story goes Karl “loved” the creation and he commissioned Luvi to make 500 Karletto dolls for his Lagerfeld pop-up stores. A few months later Luvi created the Lady Gaga doll (pictured), which naturally was ordered by the who’s who of international buyers from the world’s leading department stores: Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Net-a-Porter. “Mua Mua was consecrated by the President of Barneys New York as the best seller of the year, we sold out in just one week.” The dolls aren’t just popular with the masses either. “Many celebrities love Mua ISSUE 6 I THE CASH COLLECTIVE . Mua and they race each other to post their pictures with their fashion dolls on social media,” explains Luvi. “Cara Delavigne (pictured), Mischa Burton and Natalia Kills, end up making these little creatures something extremely popular and cool to crave for.” Other celebrity dolls in the collection include Brangelina, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian (all pictured),

as well as Marc Jacobs, Madonna, Rihanna and even a mini Obama. Another milestone for the monsters was being inaugurated into the house of Vogue. “The super good news is that Italian Vogue just choose me to be one of the Vogue Talents and I am so happy,” exclaims Luvi. Now Mua Mua is spreading the world over. Much like her dolls, the Italian-born

designer is just as jet set. At the time of this interview Luvi says: “I’m in amazing Istanbul for a holiday and to check the production of the Net-a-Porter order – it’s my biggest one this season. But I’ll have a small pit stop in Milan tomorrow, before Ibiza,” she says, as my questions and her answers fly back and forth. In the end she signs off with “super mega love from Ibiza!” Ready to focus on her next adventure the ever humble Luvi says, “Mua Mua are not famous yet at all, so thank you so much for spreading the love.” Mua Mua, now a collection of dolls, clothing and accessories, is available at the flagship store in Seminyak, Bali, as well as other outlets around the world. The dolls will continue to champion the charity that supports local education and women’s emancipation in Bali, Indonesia.

TALKING POINT : CELEBRITY JEWELLERY DESIGNER

Q&A

EMILIE DUCHENE Bespoke jewellery brand Thea has adorned the industries biggest celebrities including Nicole Scherzinger, Lily Aldridge, Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba and Karlie Kloss. The Cash Collective finds out more...

Tell us about Thea... It all started back in December 2011 when my daughter Thea was born. I wanted her birth to be forever associated with a moment of creativity and I wanted a jewel for myself to symbolise it. Yet I couldn’t find one that was pretty and delicate enough, so I decided to make my own. Before I knew it, everyone was asking for a personalised piece. You design bespoke pieces with words, names and symbol. What sets Thea apart from other similar brands? I created the signature ‘Thea’ font based on my handwriting. This makes it unique.

When did you realise Thea was famous? When I got a message from Victoria’s Secret. They wanted to partner up for their famous catalogue featuring all the supermodels! They discovered Thea on my Pinterest account and had a crush on it. That was quite an amazing day! How did you learn to make jewellery? I studied fashion and through my

What three items can’t you travel without? My iPhone, my finger sizer and my hand cream. What’s one thing people don’t know about you? My sensibility. I try to look like a tough girl but it is quite easy to make me cry! Describe your personality… Generous, creative and organised. Who’s your fashion icon and why? I must admit, I am kind of jealous of Olivia Palermo! She’s got that genuine elegance and her style is always right. She’s the perfect trendsetter. Which fashion show will we find you at? My husband is Greek, so I’m a big fan of Mary Katrantzou. I can’t get enough of her prints and modern cuts. What’s next for Thea? More new designs, of course. I’m also expanding the brand into Russia and the Middle East. For more information on Thea visit thea-jewelry.com ISSUE 6 I THE CASH COLLECTIVE . COM

Sunscreen should be your number one go-to product everyday. What we like about this SPF 30 suncream is that it’s packed with coconut, aloe vera and jojoba so it protects and nourishes at the same time.

According to Kheil’s this is the ultimate body scrub soap for men and who are we to disagree. Made from all things natural like oat bran, oatmeal and pumice, it effectively exfoliates skin while cleansing it.

SOLE STORY

GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS WITH BASTIEN GONZALEZ’S DRY PEDICURE

the treatment

My feet were buffed, cleaned and moisturised with an array of devices. Here at the spa they believe that nail and foot care is so important for a healthy foundation. Steve explains that your feet are the base to your body and that many people neglect them. The idea is that “if the foundation is strong the rest of the body will follow”. This attention to the body is an ethos carried throughout the spa, treatments and in the spa’s tranquility which only exemplifies the St. Regis standard.

man’s opinion

After taking a long flight there was no better way to unwind. The treatment was very tranquil and the experience leaves you feeling very relaxed and ready to tackle the day like a tourist and walk the miles along the busy shopping district of Orchard Road. Cost: Waterless Pedicure, 60 minutes, $195++. View the online menu for other services. WORDS BY CAMERON CLEGG. PHOTO SUPPLIED

Arriving at the Remede Spa I met Steve Desobeau podiatrist and manager of the PEDI:MANI:CURE Studio by Bastien Gonzalez. It’s a spa within a spa, a very exclusive spa, but you get the idea. I was booked in for a waterless pedicure: the spa uses a technique called a dry pedicure as opposed to a wet one, which uses water to soften your feet first. The theory behind this is that water changes the state of your nails and skin making it harder and less accurate to identify potential or current problems you may have.
