INTRODUCING THE APP JULIEN MACDONALD BEVERLY HILLS THE FASHION FESTIVAL HAVANA SEASONAL STYLE TORONTO
EDITOR’S LETTER I’m beyond excited to announce The Cash Collective app! In what may just be the most exciting news for the magazine this year, we are now available on the Apple App Store. The all new interactive platform, which has been months in the making and so worth the wait, now allows you to access The Cash Collective issue by issue by simply downloading the app. We’ve launched the app with issue 7 so enjoy the read and future issues will be available soon. What’s more is the app is of course free, just like the magazine. So simply pick up your mobile device, access the App Store, search ‘The Cash Collective’ and select ‘Get’ to install. Also this month, we are the official online media partner of The Fashion Festival, Dubai, by Muse (find out more on page 20). The chic pop-up event melds fashion and food in a new concept for the host venue, the Dubai Garden Centre. So to commemorate we ventured to the tropical location ahead of the event to shoot this month’s cover for The Cash Collective. Turn to page 28 now for breathtaking fashion on Muse model Brydie and statement makeup by the incredibly talented Haddie from Illamasqua. In this edition we also spoke to womenswear designer Julien Macdonald (page 40) and jewellery designer Ibtissam Saab (page 42) as well as the Australian design duo Deadly Companions (page 24) and sock sensation Charlotte Hobgood on the eve of her birth to baby number three (page 36). Then we head state side for a tour of north, central and south America. The lovely Shauna Logie shows us the star-studded sights of Beverly Hills starting at The Beverly Hills Hotel (page 8). As well, Carlia Ashton and Matt Seifert captured must-see scenes in Havana (page 12) and Toronto (page 16). Speaking of travel, we’re signing off until February as we’re en route to the Canary Islands, which you can read all about in the next issue. Likewise, we hope you have something equally as fabulous planned! So until February, enjoy The Cash Collective app, get those new year resolutions sounding and we’ll see you in 2015.

What’s more is the hotel is surrounded by 12 acres of lush tropical gardens with perfectly placed palm trees, which not only allude to a comforting, relaxing and resort-like feeling but one that encapsulates the hotel’s stunning disposition and their orientation towards attention to detail! If you are lucky enough to stay at this spectacular hotel, you’ll have the choice of one of their beautiful rooms, spacious suites or your very own private bungalow, which comes equipped with its very own fireplace, plunge pool and a private patio. It’s no wonder the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor were frequent guests back in the day! Speaking of celebrities, day or night, the Iconic Polo Lounge is where the heavy hitters of the industry are known to hang out. So take a seat either inside or on the patio. You won’t be disappointed with the spectacular food, notable wine list, romantic atmosphere and the piano accompaniment alternating with jazz, that creates a unique ambience. INTERVIEW: AUSTRALIA’S NEWEST EXPORT
DEADLY COMPANIONS Fashion designers, business partners and the creative talent behind Australia’s hottest new brand, Deadly Companions, Isabelle Guillemot and Lucina Mason speak to The Cash Collective about their forray into fashion... What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt setting up your own company? We have learnt that it takes a lot of hard work, time and patience! When you’re working to deadlines all the time you need to learn to think on your feet and adapt to various situations. Not everything will go the way you think it should and you have to go with the flow. You also have to have the right people around you that will encourage and support you. It helps to have a great business partner to go through it with and spread out the workload. Do you think you need a degree in design to be a fashion designer or just creative vision? So many people have great creative vision but design talent and business knowledge need to be balanced for a business to run successfully. That’s why working with a partner is a great opportunity to combine skill sets. In our opinion it definitely does help to study fashion design. By doing so we were able to gain skills like patternmaking and garment construction, which are invaluable when you need to get things done and can’t rely on others. In turn industry experience is equally as valuable and we are constantly learning and seeking to learn about industry practices by attending various seminars and workshops.

Isabelle, you were based in Dubai for a few years, what made you go back to Australia? Isabelle: Yes that’s correct. I moved back to Sydney after three years in Dubai to study fashion design at The Whitehouse Institute of Design, which is where I met Lucina. We then decided to go into business together based from Sydney but with the vision of having brand presence in Dubai, Australia and New Zealand.
Tell us your thoughts on the difference between Australian and Middle Eastern design? Isabelle: Dubai and Abu Dhabi in particular are melting pots of different cultures and tastes have evolved into hubs of creativity attracting many independent designers. In this way the Middle East and Australia are similar,in that fashion driven people are lo oking for something different. They want to stand out!

Why did you pick O Concept as your first Northernhemisphere outlet? O Concept has always been supportive of up and coming designers and they were keen to help us get our products into the Dubai marketplace. Our aesthetics are aligned because we share a love of the industrial chic and minimalism teamed with a quirky edge. Where do you manufacture your clothes? We manufacture the bulk of our clothing in China and our other signature pieces we make here in Australia. We pride ourselves on the ethical nature of our business and only use reputable manufacturers.
There are no sweatshops, child labor or animal hides used at Deadly Companions. What advice do you have for other young fashion designers starting out? The one piece of advice we would give is don’t give up! Things can get tough but it will also get better, and when it does it’s all worth it. Having a balance between design and business acumen is vital for a successful fashion label. It’s not all about the clothes unfortunately! What three things do you always travel with? Lucina: Lip balm, music and a camera.
Isabelle: Definitely a camera as well. You can find inspiration anywhere so it’s great to be able to capture it. I have thousands of images on my phone! Also sunglasses and perfume. Where will we find you when you’re not working? If we aren’t working you can find us in our favorite café in Surry Hills, Sydney or going to the beach, markets or hanging out with friends around Surry Hills or Bondi. What’s one thing people don’t know about you? Lucina: Every year on my birthday I escape to another country. Isabelle: I would like to one day have a pet pig…
What’s next for Deadly Companions? At the moment our Autumn/Winter 15 collection is being produced so we are excited to receive our first samples. We want to continue to grow and evolve Deadly Companions and excite people with our clothing. deadlycompanions.com O Concept 2, Beach Hotel Apartment, Al Hudaiba Road, Jumeirah, Dubai +04 345 5557 oconcept.ae ISSUE 9 I THE CASH COLLECTIVE.. Not to mention, Charlotte is the epitome of an entreprenuer having recently launched her sock label, Tavi Noir. Hailing from Huntington Beach, California, this all-American barre instructor, set her sights on socks that would take her from the barre to the beach and back again. “It took almost nine months from the initial idea to actually having the first socks produced and I knew nothing about making socks, let alone selling them,” said Charlotte. “My husband was so supportive and my daughter was my biggest cheerleader. Damien says: ‘Never be afraid to fail’, and this saying was never more profound then last March when I launched the line. I jumped all in feet first and I do not regret a second.” “To say it has been easy would be a lie, but I think I would have been more disappointed in myself if I didn’t try.” Clearly this mum turned business woman has landed on her feet. “I still get little butterflys when I see pople wearing the socks.”
Tavi Noir now has four styles in two colour ways and in mid-November three more styles were launched. But family still comes first for Charlotte. “I try to have lunch with my daughter once a week – I can’t do it with my son yet. I also try to be at their school functions. I know there will be a day when they don’t want me to come so I eat up any oppurutnity I can to be with them.” The busy Charlotte splits her time between her barre classes, children and cooking up a storm of ideas. “I tend to get the bulk of my business work done once the kids are in bed or before they get up. It may not be ideal and I might be slightly crazy – my husband would say so – but being a mum is so important to me. We even have this thing we do at dinner called ‘highs’ and ‘lows’, where we tell each other what the high part of our day was and the low. With the day, and most of the night, being so rushed I love this time to sit down with my family and hear about their day. So what about date nights with the hubby? (Laughs) “Date nights?! I wish that we were that organised. This year has been a huge transitional year for us. My husband fell off the WCT (the professional surfing circuit) last year after being on it for 14 years, I started a business, then fell pregnant, and we decieded to re-model our house.”

“Damien and I are ‘re-learning’ each other this year too. For the most part of our relationship – we have been together for 14 years and married for 10 – he has been traveling; sometimes with us and sometimes without us. This year he was home much more, so we are figuring out the kinks again.” “Marriage is a marathon and there are hills and valleys that come with it, I am just glad that I get to run the race with him.“ It seems that race has already began in the lead up to 2015. “The path that is laid out before me now still awes me so I am going to try to be ready for everything and nothing all at once. One thing I know for sure is that I will have three crazy mini humans who will both drive me mad and who I could not live without and a husband who will do the same. Anything else will be a bonus.” tavinoir.com

TALKING POINT : EPONYMOUS EXCLUSIVE
Q&A
JULIEN MACDONALD He’s dressed the who’s who of Hollywood, led the house of Givenchy and even worked under Karl Lagerfeld but there’s much more to this Welsh designer and The Cash Collective has the story.
As a womenswear designer, what do you love most about creating clothes? I was brought up to love women; from the catwalk to the high street all I’ve ever wanted to do is make women feel fabulous! Where will we find you when you’re not in work mode? Day to day I like to relax by going for a run around Hyde Park with my dog Jake, or going for lunch with friends. I love nothing more than travelling, which is my favourite way to switch off and unwind. Whether it be Miami or Madagascar, I love exploring other countries and cultures – next on my wish list is Japan.
Do you have a muse? When I’m designing my STAR by Julien Macdonald collection I always think about my mum and my sisters because they love shopping at Debenhams. They are the type of customer I need to appeal to. They’ve always inspired me from a young age, especially as my mum taught me to knit.
What’s one memory you look back on that makes you laugh? I once hired a Michael Jackson lookalike to sit in the front row for my London Fashion Week show. It was crazy – there were paparazzi everywhere and helicopters overhead. We were cracking up backstage, it was hilarious!
INTERVIEW BY SHANNON WYLIE, PHOTO SUPPLIED.
What three things do you always travel with? My Elemis Daily Moisture Boost and Deep Moisturising Cleanse Facial Wash, a necessity for long days in the sun. Another essential is a great pair of sunglasses.
What’s your opinion on high-end designers collaborating with massmarket brands? I think it’s great. I’ve been working with Debenhams since 2003 and I love creating my STAR by Julien Macdonald collection. My main line dresses are very expensive and worn by the most beautiful, famous women in the world, so with Designers at Debenhams I can take my philosophy and look and produce a more affordable range. As my collection has grown, I’ve added kidswear and homeware, so it’s become a stylish lifestyle brand all under one roof.
You’ve won awards, led television shows and taken the helm of Givenchy, but what’s been your proudest moment? It’s always hard to pick one moment because every step in my journey has been amazing, but receiving an OBE from the Queen of England stands out as it was such an honour. What’s your favourite piece of jewellery that you own? I don’t have one particular piece, however my first design was a pink sapphire ring set with black and white diamonds that I still have and cherish. It is a representation of my personality. Visit lacollection-privee.net
INTERVIEW BY SHANNON WYLIE, PHOTO SUPPLIED.
What’s your one piece of advice for those wanting to purchase that special piece of jewellery? Buy a piece of jewellery that reflects your personality. It is all about how that piece is then made unique through your own poise and personality.
I’m sure you have a lot of favourable memories but what’s one that stands out from the past ten years? I recently opened a boutique in Dubai at City Walk and that was a wonderful opportunity to showcase my works to everyone.

FROM FEET TO FREEZING, DISCOVER TWO NEW BODY BEAUTIFUL TREATMENTS FOR MEN AND WOMEN... CRYOTHERAPY Unless you’re a seasoned athlete who is used to ice baths, or you’ve grown up in a snowy hinterland, there’s not much that can prepare you for this minus 140 degree deep freeze treatment. In saying that, it’s one of the most exciting and energising experiences we’ve come across. So this is how it works... You’ll be asked if you have any metal plates in your body. No? Great! Next, you de-cloth, robe-up and then de-robe before entering the CRYO circle of ice. Inside, well, it’s simply below freezing. Your mits and feet warmers (pictured) keep your tips and toes from freezer burn, thankfully. Then as quickly as it started, it’ll all be over. Word of warning: Don’t. Stand. Still. Wriggle your body as much as possible, without touching the walls of the circle, tricky we know but very possible. It’s not essential but it whiles away the 3-minute routine, which weirdly enough can draw out when it’s that cold. The cold therapy treatment is designed to aid in muscle recovery and performance pre- and post-workout. So if you’re looking to loose that little bit of extra weight, 500800 calories per session to be precise, then book in for a CRYOtherapy session and experience the deep freeze yourself. 46

WORDS BY SHANNON WYLIE. PHOTOS SUPPLIED.
BASTIEN’S PEDICURE Bastien Gonzalez and his team have an irrefutable reputation as one of the world’s leading podiatry spas. Using a series of signature methods there’s no set of hands or feet that can’t be brought back to life. So after a few weeks of wearing open toed shoes, inappropriately high heels and flip flops our feet were booked in for Bastien’s Pedicure. Using a set of four different drills our highly trained podiatrist took to the nail to remove the first layer of dead cells. Then it was on to the cuticle. Note to self: Don’t push or cut the cuticle, ever! They act as a water proof barrier. Simply remove any excess that grows on top of the nail bed.
Second, was a thin drill that worked to remove any dryness around the nail followed by a quick buff. Then the third drill smoothes out the edges on the skin. This process was finished with a leather buffer that makes the nail so shiny you’d be excused for thinking a lick of clear polish had just been applied. Speaking of polish, when it comes to regular pedicures, we’ve been advised to use polish as make-up. Apply it for an occasion whether it be work, a party, an event or even just for fun, but only leave it on for one to two days. That way your nails can still breath and their state of health will be maintained. Speaking of which, the best natural shape for a nail to be cut is by following the natural pink and keeping the sides long. Then, out comes the skin scraper which removes the dry areas of your feet. Another note to self: Unless you know your pedicure practitioner is professionally trained, do not let them try this. The treatment is finished with a massage, which is designed to aid in four different ways – increase the flexibility of joints, relax the muscles, moisturise and replump the fatty pillars. Overall a podiatrist’s pedicure is one of the best ways to keep your soles healthy!
