TALKING POINT : EDEN PARK

Q&A

FRANK MESNEL The Cash Collective chats to rugby’s most fashionable player of all time, Frank Mesnel (pictured far left) about his brand, Eden Park...

Eden Park was named after the New Zealand football pitch. Why? Because I had the chance to leave part of my honour when France lost the final of the first Rugby World Cup in 1987. It’s the most precious memory that I have from New Zealand and Auckland. You played for the French team but now you’re associated with the England Rugby team. How did that come about? I take great pride in dressing my hereditary enemy. It is fantastic proof of mutual respect, a very strong symbol that revitalises the competition and the nonsense that is always said about the crunch. I thank England very much and her Majesty the Queen to have granted me this privilege. What’s one thing people don’t know about you… That I have been an architect. It helped build myself up! Also that I fly airplanes and helicopters for the pure passion of flying and precision, not to show-off. Why is the pink bow tie the signature for “eccentricity and hard work”? Because wearing a pink bow tie on the occasion of two finals of the French Championship is like putting an anvil on each of your shoulders – pressure and a small dose of impertinence that imposes on you a very strong degree

of particularity: the fear of ridicule that forces you to be effective. Tell us about the Bermuda shorts… They are always a very delicate product to work with especially because they are linked to the naked and visible parts of the legs. It is a product that can quickly ridicule someone. What is the best way for men to dress for... A party: Something very simple and elegant with a violent twist. A wedding: It is a nightmare! It’s very tempting to wear a light suit in beautiful weather but I refuse to yield and I take refuge in darker colours. The impact of a “crazy” pocket handkerchief, tie and shoes ought to be sufficient to honour the bride and groom. On an airplane: A jersey suit or blazer. It is not because you must feel comfortable that you have to fly in a tracksuit; or it should be cut like a super 120 (wool thread count). At work: In my job, I allow myself deviations that do not always suit my rugby hooker physique. But I must draw attention without risking indignation!! For our clients, I consider it to be on the contrary and it is my job to enhance their look be it Cary Grant or Danny DeVito. REVIEW

DUBAI DINNER

TOKO DUBAI’S NEWEST DINING HOTSPOT If you’ve been fortunate to experience Toko Sydney then you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the continued caliber at the restaurants newest location, Toko Dubai. For those experiencing Toko Dubai for the first time then you’re in for a gastronomic taste sensation. If the interior was anything to go by we knew that the food would speak for itself. And it did,

making this downtown hotspot a place a see and be seen. The interior has a wonderful oriental feel that isn’t overwhelming. Think oriental umbrellas hung on the terrace and a beautiful water feature wall making for a tranquil outdoor ambience. The restaurant’s interior is bustling in and out of the kitchen and the open-view kitchen makes for a great show. While the culinary skills of chefs are clear so too

is the experience of the staff, which are well versed in the menu which makes the service well rounded. From the hostesses to the waiters they are all impeccably presented. But really this is all about the food. And three words just about sum up the Toko experience: oriental, fresh and flavoursome. Tasty with an emphasis on the idea of sharing the portions are just right too. REVIEW BY SHANNON WYLIE AND CAMERON CLEGG, IMAGES SUPPLIED

The Cash Collective started with Edamame and a signature cockatil before moving on to starters of kingfish, scallop and tomato heirloom salad. Also if you feel like experiencing traditional Japanese flavours then be sure to accompany your meal with Sake, a rice wine. Next was the chef’s selection of Toko nigiri. The

unusual combinations of their sushi are a highlight on the menu. Then we sampled the cuttlefish, king crab legs which were a personal favourite before finishing with mains of short ribs, the much-talkedabout avocado and duck breast. The bento box for desert is a must-try. For a Dubai dinner we give Toko a 5-star rating.
