MAX&CO. SS14 62 THINGS TO BUY KANDY DYLAN RYU NICE BEAUTY BUZZ BRIGHTON
EDITOR’S LETTER You may have noticed that last month, instead of bringing you another edition of The Cash Collective, we decided to extend the reach of the magazine’s pages and bring you a pop-up shop instead. Full of all of your favourite labels which have featured in TCC over the previous months, make sure you SHOP if you haven’t already at thecashcollective.com. Another announcement we have to make is that this month’s The Cash Collective sees an exclusive collaboration with Max&Co. We teamed up with the Italian fashion brand’s flagship Dubai store to showcase their latest SS14 collection (turn to page 18). However, the biggest announcement we have to make is that like you, we’re heading off for the holiday season to scout new horizons. So when we’re back in September we’ll have plenty of fresh and fabulous destinations, fashion and beauty secrets to bring you. So until then, enjoy the fifth issue of The Cash Collective!

HOTEL REVIEW: FAB GUEST
BOUTIQUE
CONTEMPORARY AND CHIC
WORDS AND IMAGES BY SHANNON WYLIE.
When it comes to seaside cities in Britain they don’t come much more beautiful than Brighton. Getting here The Cash Collective took the Heathrow Express train from London to Brighton, which only adds to the experience because you travel through tiny towns that border the tree-lined track. Once you arrive in Brighton the quant vibe and cobbled stoned streets give you a sense you’re somewhere special – and you are. Lovely little laneways are home to designer boutiques and cool cafes, the grandiose Royal Pavilion occupies the heart of the city and the rocky beach stretches on for miles under stunning

sunsets. But it is perhaps the Brighton Pier, which is the most stunning sight in the city. Complete with a Ferris wheel, theme park and aquarium it’s an adventure waiting to be had. What’s more is all of these sights to see are just a ten minute walk from the Fab Guest house – a five-story townhouse which has been converted into a contemporary boutique hotel. Complete with 14 rooms they all have an ensuite bathroom, TV, wi-fi and bed. The Cash Collective had a room with a view that overlooks the street and peers down to the ocean from a large bay window. It’s breathtaking. Downstairs is a shared lounge room where you can make tea or coffee, read a magazine and watch the world go by. But perhaps what gives Fab Guest its unique look and feel is the custom-made furniture and quirky design – it really is a chic stay. Another draw to staying here is the economic arrival system. The front door of the hotel and the door to your room are both equipped with the same keypad code (all rooms have a different number system) so you don’t have to worry about loosing keys or cards, just don’t forget your combination. While you’re staying at Fab Guest be sure to soak in the surrounding area too. There’s theatres and comedy nights, courses – we did the make your own knickers workshop with Sew Fabulous (sew-fabulous.org) – watersports and a trip to neighbouring Hove is a must too. Our favourite thing to do, however, during the two-day stay was wondering from the hotel down the
esplanade to a bustling beach bar before heading into town for dinner at one of the many mouthwatering restaurants (see our guide on page 9). Then it’s back on the train and London bound after a very refreshing short stay.

HOTEL REVIEW: ELLERTON
BUNGALOWS A JUNGLE SANCTUARY
There’s only one word to describe Ellerton: peaceful. Nestled in the hills of the Gampola jungle this tropical oasis witnesses bright and beautiful days, serene sunsets and balmy nights that are so dark the only lights you see are the stars in the sky. Everywhere you look there is 180 degrees of lush greenery and if you look closer you’ll see the monkeys in the trees, deer wandering the forest floor and exotic birds soaring high above. Located half an hour outside of Kandy and three hours drive from the Colombo international airport, this picturesque getaway is a haven for anyone looking to escape for a weekend or a week. When you arrive at Ellerton, the staff will be waiting to greet you and show you to your room. The boutique property has eight rooms which

are scattered across the main house, the valley house, and two garden rooms. The Cash Collective stayed in the garden room, an apartment-style one-bedroom with ensuite bathroom, lounge area and a private balcony with sweeping views of the valley through to Alagalla – one of Sri Lanka’s memorable mountains. There’s a plethora of novels on offer in the room and candles to set the scene too. The stay is all-inclusive of food and drink (yes, this does include vino at dinner) so you don’t need to exert any effort searching for somewhere to dine. Don’t expect a buffet either, Ellerton have chefs that prepare your meals individually and when you feel like it – just let them know your schedule and they work around you. While you’re at Ellerton explore the surrounding area on one of several walks to take, paths to bike and activities to do. Bikes are free to borrow at any time of the day. We opted to take the Orange Field Tea Factory tour. An hour tuk-tuk ride away enjoy the drive through tea plantations that line the winding roads. In this intimate tour you’ll be shown around the factory that makes 650,000kgs of tea every year. Sebastian, the owner, has an interesting story to tell as you watch the giant machines in action rolling the leaves. The aromas waft through the warm Sri Lankan air as the leaves continue to make their way down the production line. After the tour enjoy a cup of their tea before making your way back to Ellerton. Back at the bungalows take a dip in the sparkling blue swimming pool, which uses water from the local spring.

TALKING POINT : CUSTOMISING VINTAGE HANDBAGS
Q&A
DYLAN RYU There aren’t many designers who would dare to change the world’s most expensive handbags bags but Dylan does. Discover Asia’s hottest new handbag customiser...
You started upcycling handbags after you spilled red wine on a Christian Dior bag. Do women often ask you to cover stains on bags or is it more about creating something new out of something old? I receive many requests from customers to recreate their vintage bags or new bags but I don’t work that way. We only customise some bags for VIP customers. We sell pre-customised bags from our shop or during events and exhibition. At a recent event we had 40 Kelly bags. You often find accessories for your bags at flea markets. What are your favourite flea markets around the world and why? My favorite flea market is Puces de Clignancourt Saint-Ouen in Paris. The prices at flea markets in Paris are higher than others but that’s because the items are vey delicate and beautiful.
Your top three items to travel with? A sewing set. I work wherever I get ideas like planes, parks, and wine bars. My old teddy bear Pinot, I feel at home if he’s with me. Also I always have my laptop. Who is your clientele? Cool people who can appreciate and
How would you describe your style? I mix old vintage Chanel jackets with striped t-shirts purchased at Monoprix for 20 euros. I respect and love the luxury and tradition but we always need items with reasonable prices. However, I hate cheap fake items that mimic luxury ones. What’s one thing people don’t know about you? I don’t have a driver’s license and I cannot ride a bicycle. What is the best way to accessorise? I think every accessory should match the occasion. At parties or weddings, small bags make outfits more beautiful. Even very expensive bags won’t impress if they don’t match the place. I once saw a woman with a crocodile briefcase at a gala dinner and it was really inharmonious. Your bags are hugely popular in the Asian market, are you looking to expand? I’m very interested in the Middle Eastern market including Dubai. I think there’s this mix of the mysterious, strict, and luxury. Dylan’s bags are sold at On Pedder at Joyce in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Jakarta, Club Designer in Taiwan, and 10 Corso Como in Korea. For more information visit dylanryu.com. TALKING POINT : FASHION THEN AND NOW
Q&A
ANGEL SCHLESSER This award-winning Madrid-based fashion designer has been a mainstay since the 1980s. Here The Cash Collective talks to the man behind the eponymous label.
When did you first become intrigued by fashion? In the 80s when I arrived in Madrid, my friends were in fashion. Many people were starting interesting projects in the fashion design field in Spain at the time and that’s how I discovered my interest in fashion. What do you remember most about your first runway show? It was Cibeles Fashion Week in Madrid and it was a really big success. My beat was different from the trends that were reigning in the late 80s. It was a big change, but luckily the public understood it and appreciated it. It was perceived as something fresh and new. How did it feel to open your first store? I was very excited. People came from other cities to buy, which was very gratifying.
Where do you draw inspiration from for your collections? In both cases, inspiration comes from everyday life, from my friends, from the world around me in general and from nothing in particular.
What do you do when you’re not designing? I relax like many people do. I go out with friends for dinner and I spend weekends at the beach. On Sundays I like to be at home reading. Top three tips on how to dress for 2014? A delicate white blouse, masculine wide trousers and a good wool coat. What’s your top selling piece of all time? A male pantsuit that had a very feminine edge to it. What brands do you like to wear? Prada, Maison Kitsuné, Hartford and Robert Friedman shirts. What type of designer are you? I am organised, that’s my way of being. What’s next for you? I’m expanding my clothing and accessories collections abroad through multi-brand shops and department stores. Which three essential items do you always travel with? A good book, confortable clothes and good company.

pedicure
A pedicure does more for your feet then it does for your look. Although the later is naturally an added benefit. At Sisters they know the importance of a good pedicure and treat each pair of feet to a scrub, soak and buff that will leave your toes worthy of any pair of designer shoes. You can also add a callus treatment to your booking, which we highly recommend to remove any dry and excess skin. Finish with an Essie or Ciaté polish – there’s an impressive choice of colours too.

DETOX
DELIGHT
REVIEW BY SHANNON WYLIE, IMAGES BY SHANNON WYLIE AND SUPPLIED.
BALANCE YOUR BODY THIS SEASON WITH A JUICE CLEANSE I’m a snacker. Fruit, homemade goji berry and nut trail mixes and glutenfree bars are staples you’ll always find on my desk. In between my three, for the most part, wholesome meals I snack. So the thought of doing a juice detox and not consuming food for three days was daunting to say the least. But as I’m inclined to admit, I’m a sucker for healthy food fads. Fads that become mainstays are all the more appealing especially when they talk to your waistline (word of warning, do not do a detox to loose weight, detox to balance your system and

refuel it with the essential vitamins and minerals it needs in one concentrated go). So I signed up to Detox Delight, a company that sprouted in Munich and is now an international phenomenon. To start with I needed to decide which program to do and for how long? I opted for the three-day Juice and Dinner package. They then send you a document that details how the program works, how to prepare for it and what
results to expect. A few days later a box of ice filled with four 500ml juices and three vegan meals was delivered to my door (you do have the option to collect your detox package to keep costs down). Every two hours I consumed a juice and finished the day with the pre-packed meal. The first juice was, to my surprise, delicious, as were they all. The combinations were apple, water, grapefruit followed by apple, carrot, orange, grapes and
rocket, then apple, carrot, beetroot, celery, lime and ginger and lastly a mix of pineapple, apple, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, celery, wheatgrass and spirulina. Dinners were a quinoa salad, dhal and a soup. Day one, so far so good. More than anything I was surprised by my lack of hunger. Don’t get me wrong, by dinner time I
was hungry but the meals sufficed. By the end of day three I was more energised, alert and to test the whole process I ate one square of organic dark chocolate and I felt horrendous. A month on and the benefits are still obvious: I snack less, I crave sugar less and the scales seem to reflect this, which is an added benefit.
