WELCOME FRIENDS!
We’re off to a great start with the Center Presents partnership with Allied Solutions. It’s the biggest and most diverse concert schedule in the Center’s history, and November is certainly no exception.
After closing out October with Grammy-winning West African diva Angélique Kidjo, we start a run that includes two shows by Indiana’s own Jon McLaughlin, the return of acclaimed trumpeter Chris Botti, a free community performance by the U.S. Army Field Band & Soldiers’ Chorus, the Palladium debut of Puerto Rican salsa king Gilberto Santa Rosa, an evening of Franz Schubert trios, the launch of our National Geographic Live presentation series, a multigenerational celebration of New Orleans music, and much more.
Also making her Center debut in November is pianist and vocalist Eliane Elias, who has explored every corner of the jazz realm while staying true to her Brazilian roots. You can read about her rising success in our cover story on Page 6.
You’ll find more information in the pages that follow and at our website, TheCenterPresents.org, about our big-name performances as well as our educational and experiential programs, including concerts and camps for kids, book clubs for all ages, expert speakers on the arts, and casual music classes for beginners.
Our site is also the best one-stop source of information and tickets for the Resident Companies that bring so much additional energy to our campus: Actors Theatre of Indiana, Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Central Indiana Dance Ensemble, Civic Theatre, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre and Indiana Wind Symphony.
And when purchasing, please remember: To make sure you are getting legitimate tickets at the most reasonable prices, we encourage you to always buy directly from the Center via TheCenterPresents.org, the Palladium’s Firth Third Box Office or by phone at (317) 843-3800.

Pianist Eliane Elias follows her roots to the top of the jazz scene
6
Eliane Elias was born in the right place at the right time. The evidence is clear in her long and ongoing rise as a multi-Grammywinning jazz pianist, vocalist and composer.
As a child piano prodigy in 1960s São Paulo, Elias grew up listening to her mother’s American jazz records. Meanwhile, the local airwaves carried the sounds and sights of Brazilian musical traditions, especially an offshoot of samba that came to be known as bossa nova – a “new style” with a distinctive syncopated beat.
“When I was 5 years old, they had some TV programs where composers would be breaking their songs, interpreters were singing the bossa nova,” she recalls, on a day spent juggling phone interviews after her most recent Grammy nomination.
“So, it was a great time to grow up because of that mix of jazz happening at home, and the Brazilian music, the richness of that music that was being played, was everywhere, on TV and the radio.”
When those worlds intersected, they spawned a global music phenomenon that still stands as an instant signifier of tropical tranquility and sexy sophistication. Bossa nova broke worldwide with the 1964 album Getz/Gilberto by
American cool jazz saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto. It was the first jazz release to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and its three other Grammys included Record of the Year for the hit single “The Girl from Ipanema,” which has since become one of the most recorded songs of all time. “Ipanema” is one of many Latin jazz standards written by composer Antônio Carlos Jobim and lyricist Vinicius de Moraes, generally considered bossa nova’s premier songwriting team.
Both men, now deceased, were among Elias’ greatest mentors. She toured with Moraes in her teen years, and in the mid-’90s, Jobim asked her to fill in when he was too ill to play piano on a tribute album of his songs by jazz saxophonist Joe Henderson. “We did have a beautiful relationship,” Elias says of these elders. “For me, it was great, because it was like learning and sharing the bossa nova with the creators of this music.”
She pays tribute to this key influence with her brand-new, 31st album, Quietude, on which her sultry vocals – in Portuguese, of course – are accompanied more often by a gently plucked nylon-stringed guitar than by her virtuosic piano work.
“There’s something very special
7
about voice and guitar together,” she says. “I feel very strongly about what we did and the music we were able to capture and really represent the music of Brazil, the bossa nova, the intimacy of that. The affinity with the guitar and the syncopation that we got into, the arranging –I’m very happy with it, and I hope people feel as good as we’re feeling about it.”
So, what is it that makes the bossa nova vibe so iconic?
After pointing out the challenging nature of the question, Elias gives it a try. She notes that, for many listeners, the Portuguese language is a key component, being a naturally poetic tongue with “soft consonants and delicate vowels.”
But it’s also clear that the whole exceeds the sum of the parts.
“The music is romantic, the melodies are beautiful, the harmonies of the bossa nova were always very beautifully written, in a certain way, almost like some of the American jazz (standards),” she says. “The combination – the harmony, the melody, the rhythm, the sound of the language – I think was captivating to everyone, to Brazilians and people who had a chance to hear it anywhere in the world.”
Right now, Elias is in the spotlight for her 2021 album Mirror Mirror,
a collection of piano duets with two of her heroes: Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés and American jazz legend Chick Corea. Earlier this year, the record claimed the Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album, and in September it was nominated as Best Jazz Album in the Latin Grammy Awards.
The project was a long-awaited dream for Elias, and the critical response is gratifying.
“It’s such a very special album, and very rare that someone wins a Grammy and then the Latin Grammy nomination,” she says. “Everything happened so wonderfully. … the recording and what we captured musically together.”
Sadly, the session was one of Corea’s last. He was diagnosed with cancer and died just months later in February 2021.
“He didn’t seem ill at all – that’s what’s so incredible,” Elias says. “In fact, we recorded in the afternoon, and when we finished, he walked from 54th Street to Third Street, where the Blue Note nightclub is in New York, to go play two shows. He was taking great care of himself. He was a vegetarian and he lost a lot of weight.
“I was so immersed in what we were doing (completing the album), when the news came, I
8
was very shocked. I had no idea.”
Both of Elias’ latest albums reflect her Latin jazz roots, but her vast catalog covers a broad spectrum of styles that can fit under the jazz umbrella. She tries to cover the full range in her current performances, which feature plenty of on-the-spot interplay with her rhythm section: acclaimed Brazilian drummer Rafael Barata and veteran
jazz bassist Marc Johnson, her husband and longtime musical collaborator.
“It’s a feel-good concert,” she says. “Our show is going to have some of the great Brazilian standards, some music from Quietude, but also things that I’ve done throughout my career.
“People seem to leave feeling really happy.”

AARON LEWIS: FRAYED AT BOTH ENDS, THE ACOUSTIC TOUR
Friday, October 28 at 8pm | The Palladium
Aaron Lewis grew up in Springfield, Vermont, listening to his grandparents’ country 8-tracks. Those roots inspired the founder of multi-platinum rock band Staind to return to his origins, with successes including the Billboard No. 1 Top Country Albums Town Line and Sinner and the No. 1 Hot Country Song “Am I the Only One.” Having recorded with George Jones, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels, Alison Krauss and Vince Gill, Lewis has put a traditionalist brand on his outlier country. Frayed at Both Ends, released in January, shows the workingman’s country star at his most personal and unplugged – an intimate record reflected in this acoustic tour.

Back by popular demand! Join us for a fast-paced, entertaining cabaret of handcrafted marionettes. Children and adults will delight in the hilarious antics of the characters and the skill of the puppeteers. Everyone will want to sing along with the holiday classics and favorites.
Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam:
"Animals of the North Pole" with Silly Safaris
January 7 | 10:30AM ET | The Palladium
Meet Jingle John, a reindeer herder from the Scandinavian Sami culture, as he introduces us to amazing animals of the Arctic Circle, one of the coldest, harshest environments on the planet. Technically, it is a giant frozen desert, and the animals that live there have specific adaptations for survival. He’ll bring mammals, reptiles, a bird and, of course, bugs to demonstrate life at the pole -- including a real live reindeer!

ABOUT THE CENTER
The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to engage and inspire the Indiana community through enriching arts experiences.
The Center for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater create a welcoming place for the community to engage with all forms of the performing arts. The campus also provides a home for the affiliated Great American Songbook Foundation and hosts six Resident Companies, along with other organizations that utilize the facilities for their events. Since opening in 2011, the Center’s venues have hosted over 2,900 performances and over 1.2 million patrons representing all 92 counties in Indiana, all 50 states and 30 plus nations. The campus also draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for other public events.
Each year the Center provides access to the arts for thousands of people of all ages – building community, enriching lives and inspiring minds young and old. Education and outreach initiatives include performing arts classes for children and adults and special programs for upcoming generations, such as the interactive Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam concert series for preschoolers, the Palladium PALS reading club, educational videoconferences for students around the state, and the Student Discount Ticket program, through which students can attend select performances for just $15.

ABOUT THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK FOUNDATION
The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook.
The beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics created by the musical masterminds of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century represent the golden age of American popular music.
Based at the Palladium, the Great American Songbook Foundation is permanently affiliated with the Center for the Performing Arts and is one of a handful of worldwide Cultural Affiliates of the Los Angeles-based GRAMMY Museum®. The Foundation carries out its unique mission to preserve America’s rich musical legacy in numerous ways:
• The Songbook Library & Archives The Songbook Library & Archives houses documents, images and historic artifacts of songwriters Meredith Willson ( The Music Man) and Harold Arlen ( The Wizard of Oz) and artists like Natalie Cole, Andy Williams, and Sammy Davis, Jr.
• The Songbook Exhibit Gallery presents rotating interactive exhibits that share the music, history, and culture of the Songbook.
• The Songbook Academy ® is a national summer music intensive for high school vocalists dedicated to the music of classic Broadway, jazz and the American Songbook.
• Perfect Harmony, a group music program for older adults, offers a unique opportunity for social and musical engagement, and promotes holistic wellbeing through music.
• The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Great American Songbook, with a new class inducted each year. A permanent exhibit and virtual programming are generously sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Charles M Simons.
Exhibit Gallery Hours: Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm
The Gallery is also open one hour prior to select Center Presents performances at the Palladium.
