The Cultivated palette 3 Tips for Choosing Your Hues
Photography by Visions by Heather
Yay, color! At some point in your planning you are going to have to consider color. Just think of Shelby from Steel Magnolias who knew for certain that her wedding would be draped in her signature colors, “blush” and “bashful”. Whether you know your color scheme from the beginning or decide after more careful planning, color plays a very important role in your wedding day details. It is weaved throughout your day and encompasses more than just the color of your bridesmaids’ dresses. Heather Cheatham owns and operates Visions by Heather. You can easily find her and her husband at a field, courtside or poolside supporting their two boys at sporting events, but she also enjoys time traveling, decorating and volunteering.
Start with a main color. This may come from your favorite shade, or it could be related to the season, theme, venue or flowers. You may even consider honoring your mother or grandmother with a color from her wedding day. As you begin to decide on critical elements of your day (dresses, flowers, décor, etc.) your wedding will develop a color palette of its own. Don’t be shy to use what you like, even if it seems out of place. If you want mint green, go for it! After all, it’s a trending color for 2013. While your bridesmaids may frown upon minty green frocks, you can weave the color throughout your day with particular accents like linens, flowers and more. Look to the color wheel for compliments or look online. One color combined with the right accents (or used as an accent with the right primary color) can change the entire mood of your day. Imagine your favorite mint green combined with pale coral (vintage), yellow (retro), rust (autumn), or even red (bold). The right complimentary colors will complete the overall mood of your day. Your color palette should connect your choices to how you want your wedding day to feel.

Whether your preferred color is royal, plum, or emerald (the 2013 color of the year!), picking a cooler hue is both refreshing and calming.
Brighter palettes in yellows, reds and oranges evoke feelings of excitement and happiness and lend themselves to any time of year.
At times a neutral palate is preferable, and using monochromatic colors in these tones allows for textures to really shine through.

Birds and chevrons make this wedding an adorable feast for the eyes. Add hues of yellow and gray accented with aqua, and you have Andrew and Jessica’s sweet, rustic event.
“ I started with wanting to do grays and yellows because I liked the way it looked together and then gradually started adding to it to brighten it up and add more detail. We would go and find random fabric patterns that I loved and slowly added to it all. Andrew and I are not super fancy people, and I knew I liked “unique vintage with a twist.” No one would have anything exactly like our wedding and I liked that.” —Jessica Cake – family friend Catering – Caroline Street Catering Flowers – Pittman Florist Gown – Alfred Angelo Photography – S Carter Studios Venue – Clore Brothers Outfitters

Modern flower girls are cuter than ever with all of the dress and styling choices. Here we present our rendition of The Three Little Kittens showcasing hair, makeup and dress selections for today’s little girls. Based on the popular children’s poem, our three little kittens love to laugh and play together, which sometimes gathers them into trouble. From an elegant tea party complete with pie to playing with yarn, these kittens had a fun day, which ended with washing their mittens and masquerading in a photo booth made just for them.

Making your big day “yours” Your wedding is the day when you and your fiancé declare your love in front of friends, family, and loved ones - and it should reflect you, your personalities, and your relationship from start to finish. In the modern world of wedding planning, personalizing your big day has officially evolved from the traditional selection of wedding colors and china patterns into crafting a ceremony and celebration that have the hallmarks of your identity as a couple. This task can, admittedly, be overwhelming, so here are some fresh new suggestions to help you do just that! Turn the tables on you:

Get Prepared for (Bridal) Shows
Navigation is a term normally referred to on the high seas, but when a bride enters a show, it can seem like uncharted waters. Shows are a great way to sample catering and see floral arrangements, but they can make for a long day and information overload if you are not adequately prepared.
Preregister if the show offers that option. Shows may have entrance lines, and preregistering eliminates the need to fill out paperwork while a plethora of other brides are doing so. Create labels. Be sure to include your name, address, email, phone number, and wedding date. This will save you time and keep your hand from hurting from writing all day! Have a date and number of people in mind before you go. You will be asked this question, so having some idea or at least a range is helpful. Keep your purse light. Normally you will receive a bridal bag (if not, you may want to just bring an empty tote for collecting information). You will save your arm and shoulder by only worrying about carrying minimal things. Have a friend tag along (but not an entourage!) - Having key people come with you is a lifesaver. They can help you with ideas and gracefully guide your timetable with vendors. Be careful not to bring too many as trying to move through with a group of ten can be difficult.

Bring water. Most bridal shows are very heavy on the food, yet beverages are scarce. Bring water or at least scope out the water fountains so you can stay hydrated. Dress Comfortably. You definitely want to look nice, but you may want to forgo the heels and not have your outfit be a hindrance. Go hungry (but bring a snack!). Shows have caterers and cake artists who are waiting to tempt your tastebuds. Go with an appetite (although not starving so you are not ravaging the first caterer you stumble upon!). If there are less sampling stations than expected, a snack will offer sustenance. Don’t get sidetracked by non-food vendors offering food. Save the eating for the caterers and bakers ... unless the non-food vendor has partnered with a catering company or baker so that you can have a taste of their creations. Have an open mind. Services that may not top your list could make your life easier (or your wedding more fun!) in the end. Look for trends, color combinations, unique flowers, and other things you can view in person rather than in a magazine. You may leave with a few new ideas.

Bring a manilla envelope. Placing information from vendors you are serious about in a separate envelope will ensure that the florist that impressed you isn’t forgotten about in the shuffle of papers you take home. Or snap a photo with your phone of the business card of the vendors that are “must haves so their information is readily available. Interview the vendor. Sometimes you will not only be impressed by the talent of the wedding professional, but you could really click, which will make the wedding planning process that much more enjoyable. Be honest with vendors. Shows are tiring! They have to plan their booths, get materials ready, set up, be at their best for hours (in heels, maybe!) and then tear down and put things away. If you are truly not interested, let them know politely. This allows them to expend their energy on brides that are considering booking them. Take information, and regroup at home. Take information from each booth (unless you are truly not interested in or have already booked their type of service). Once home, you can spread out the information and have a thorough look at it. Be prepared for emails and follow ups. Expect for key vendors to do a follow up with you after the show via email or even a phone call if you expressed that you were interested or in need of their services. Jennifer Prince is the face behind Bliss (www.hillcitybride.com/bliss), which are upscale wedding events for local brides. You can find her (in her heels most likely!) at bridal shows around town.

contrast. When choosing cheese, try to include the following: a sharp cheese (any type of sharp cheddar), a tangy, flavorful cheese (such as a blue cheese variety), a mild cheese, and a smooth, creamy cheese, typically a goat cheese variety. Then, choose items to accompany or “fill” the cheese plate. Try to include both sweet and salty elements: fresh or dried fruit, prosciutto, nuts, jams, grainy mustard, and even honey. The goal is to compliment the flavors of the cheese without overpowering it. Serve with crackers or toasted baguette rounds available at local grocery stores.

A thorough premarital preparation package should include these basic elements: Relationship assessment questionnaire. These instruments are excellent for identifying a couple’s relationship strengths as well as those areas where they may need to talk more or work through issues they haven’t thoroughly dealt with.
Discussion about finances. This is an area that many couples don’t delve into very deeply while dating, but it can cause considerable friction in marriage. It should include the actual building of a budget, along with discussion of how finances will be managed and how assets and liabilities will be dealt with.
Communication and conflict resolution skills training. Because this is such an important part of a healthy marriage, it is critical that you get good training – and practice – in these skills. It involves learning how to really listen to your partner and reflect back what you hear, without getting defensive or avoiding the subject.

Stripes were found on bouquets, socks and straws at Shea and Jessica’s celebration. Fun touches like oversized balloons and a candy bar all proclaimed that love, indeed, is sweet.
“ We tried to include a lot of Southern touches in the wedding, including monograms. The theme of our wedding was southern, fun, and timeless. Shea and I both decided that we would do a “first look”… this ended up being one of my favorite parts of the whole day. It Doesn’t Have to be Pinterest Perfect Congratulations! That moment that at some point felt so far off and implausible is here--you’re engaged! And to a great guy. So now what? If you’re like I was less than a year ago, you might be a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of decisions that you need to make in the next 6-12 months. Planning a wedding can feel like a lot of pressure. But it is also amazingly fun! I loved the idea of throwing a fantastic party for all of my friends and family to witness our wedding vows. There are a few things that I learned along the way that I didn’t find in any wedding magazines or blogs ahead of time, so here you go--my top five list. 1. Release yourself from the Pinterest standard. Maybe you are already a genius with a glue gun, are all about crossstitching favors for each of your 150 guests, or are dying to decoupage the vases on every table, but if you’re not it’s ok. I had to come to grips with the fact that while I consider myself to have good taste, my wedding was never going to be one of those Pinterest-genius weddings, and I am ok with that! It’s just not me. While other people find joy in a DIY-tastic event, I just find it tedious. I decided

3. Prioritize what you value. This principal both applies to all of life and to your wedding budget. Don’t really like cake that much? Don’t spend $1000 on it. Always throw invitations away? Don’t spend $5 on each letter-pressed invitation you send out. This is not rocket science. If there is an aspect of your wedding that you’ve always dreamed about, make sure it is included in

to be to “At Last.” You don’t have to have a bouquet toss. You definitely don’t have to have a unity candle. If there is any aspect of the typical wedding that doesn’t ring true for you, make up your own rules! This, for real, is your day, so conjure up your dream ceremony and reception and make it happen. This is about the beautiful commitment that you and your spouse are making on this momentous day and the support of your incredible network of loved ones. There’s so much to celebrate. So just celebrate it how you want to celebrate it. Planning your wedding can be so fun and so stressful. The most important thing is to enjoy it! You only do it once. So soak up every moment and plan a wedding that is an authentic reflection of you and your husband. Best wishes!

Hardened airline gate agents and front desk receptionists can do wonderful things for you. No promises here, but it never hurts to let them know. Avoid the peak season. Yes, May and June are the most popular months for weddings and honeymoons, but they are also the most expensive. If you are flexible with the season, you can save huge amounts on everything from the reception location to the honeymoon. Take time to enjoy wedding planning, but don’t forget about the honeymoon. Your local travel agent is ready and waiting (with their experience in tow) to help you have a wonderful trip. Happy honeymooning!
