A Pound of Candles In his youth, The Maggid of Zlotchov, Rabbi Yechiel Michel lived in little town where he would sit and learn Torah all day. There was a simple Yid in the town who earned his livelihood by transporting people and goods. One day, the man arrived to the Rav extremely distressed and related that he was Mechallel Shabbos and wanted to know how he could atone. He explained that he had lost his way in the forest and by the time he arrived in the town, the sun had set and he failed to realize that Shabbos had arrived until it was too late. The Rav comforted the Yid and said that he should donate a pound of candles to the Shul as atonement. Rabbi Michel overheard their conversation and thought that the Rav was treating the matter too lightly. On Friday, the Yid brought the candles to Shul but before the Shammash could light them in honour of Shabbos, a stray dog arrived and ate them. The Yid was distraught however the Rav instructed him to do the same the following RivkyWeber Bus Car4_RL.ai 1 7/14/10 4:51 PM Shabbos. That Friday, the candles somehow melted down before Shabbos. Shabbos, a wind blew out the candles. The Rav realized that something was amiss and told the Yid to go to the Baal Shem Tov who upon hearing the story said that a certain young scholar in the town finds fault with this atonement. He instructed the Yid to donate another pound of candles the following week and to tell Rabbi Michel to come and visit him. Rabbi Michel set out on the journey to the Baal Shem Tov, yet, upon commencement all sorts of troubles began and finally they were forced to walk the rest of the way on foot as the sun was about to set. Rabbi Michel arrived at the Baal Shem Tov’s door an hour into Shabbos, traumatized by his near-violation of Shabbos. The Baal Shem Tov greeted him warmly and said, “You, Reb Michel, have never tasted sin, so you did not comprehend the remorse a Yid feels at having transgressed. I trust that you now understand something of the agony that our friend experienced. His remorse alone more than atoned for his unwitting transgression...”

Get a handle on high blood pressure
High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects about 30 percent of U.S. adults and is expected to increase even further in the next decade or two. Early-stage hypertension often does not cause any physical symptoms, but left untreated it can lead to heart disease, stroke, dementia and kidney failure. Fortunately, many prescription medications are now available to treat high blood pressure, and medications will lower the risk of potential complications of this disease. Unfortunately, blood pressure medications also tend to be very expensive and often cause side effects. The good news is that there are many changes you can make to your lifestyle to reduce your risk of developing hypertension, or to reduce your need for medication if you already have been diagnosed. Vitamin C seems to promote relaxation of blood vessels, and this is probably the mechanism by which it helped to lower blood pressure in these studies. The intake of olive oil & olive leaf extract lowers both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Magnesium and potassium lower blood pressure and enhance the effects of blood pressure medications. Caution: Ask your doctor about taking magnesium and potassium if you have kidney disease.
adequate. Co-enzyme Q-10, 100-200 mg taken twice daily with food, may enhance blood pressure lowering in people who are on meds for hypertension. A study at UC Davis found that 150-300 mg of grape seed extract per day lowered systolic blood pressure by about 8 points in 4 weeks. Bottom line: if you have high blood pressure or you are at risk for high blood pressure, start with a healthy low carb diet with lots of vegetables & protein, throw some olive oil in every day for good measure, exercise regularly and breathe deeply. If your blood pressure still needs tweaking, then consider adding some of the above therapies. And of course, monitor your blood pressure at home, and be sure to follow up with your doctor.

Volvo invented the three point seatbelt and it gave free license to all other auto manufacturers to use it. The life-saving V-shaped three-point seat belt was invented by Volvo Engineer Nils Bohlin in 1959, and Volvo’s visionary open patent which granted free use of the design to all other car manufacturers. The design is as obvious as it is intelligent. Easily fastened with one hand, it secures the seat’s occupant in place with a belt across the chest and another across the hips - a vast improvement on the previous twopoint waist restraint. It is estimated that more than a million people owe their lives to the seat belt, and it has saved many times that number of people from serious injury. “The decision to release the three point seat belt patent was visionary and in line with Volvo’s guiding principle of safety,” says Alan Desselss, managing director of Volvo Car Australia. “It’s why we like to say there’s a little bit of Volvo in every car.” Research indicates that vehicle occupants have a 50 per cent better chance of surviving a crash, if they are wearing a seat belt, reducing the risk of fatalities and serious injuries from collisions.
