Of Mitzvas, Miles & Money Reb Fiarstein held the coveted privilege of being Rabbi Moshe Feinstein’s z”l driver for over twenty five years. Each day, he would arrive in his 1967 Chevy and take Rabbi Moshe from his apartment to the Yeshivah. One day Reb Fiarstein’s car broke down due to engine failure. The car had already 100,000 miles and Reb Fiarstein was in a dilemma as to whether he should have the car repaired. Meanwhile, he quickly hailed a cab and went to pick up Rabbi Moshe. Sitting in the car, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein turned to him and asked, “Nu…what’s with your car?” Reb Fiarstein answered that his car broke down and he was thinking of buying a new car. Rabbi Moshe probed deeper and asked him why he thought he needed a new car.

Reb Fiarstein sensed that Rabbi Moshe was actually trying to ask him if he really and truly needs a new car or if a new car was just about his image. He answered that his car already had 100,000 miles and it did not seem worthwhile to invest in repairing it. Rabbi Moshe retorted, invest and you will get another 110,000 miles out of the car. Reb Fiarstein later recounted that he got another 100,000 miles out of that same 1967 Chevy. It expired at exactly 210,000 miles. Reb Fiarstein also adds that amazingly that during the entire period of time the car did not require any repairs at all besides for its usual maintenance. As heard from Rabbi Fischel Schaechter.

About one-third of free roaming house cats are capturing and killing wildlife. Kittycams were attached to 60 cats and recorded in all four seasons. The participating cats averaged about six hours outside every day. About 30 percent of the cats were successful in capturing and killing prey and averaged a kill every 17 hours resulting in about two killings per week. They only brought 23 percent of their kills back home, too, which was very surprising. It meant that the initial amount of killings thought to be done by cats was less than 75 percent of the truth and counters previous thoughts on the impact they have on wildlife. The cats killed a wide variety of animals, too, including lizards, snakes, voles, chipmunks, birds, and frogs. The information was startling to researchers and explained some things for them. Cats are actually responsible for about 500 million bird deaths each year.
