Forever My Child I could see that she was extraordinarily beautiful the moment she was born and placed in my arms. She was so tiny; her birth weight had been quite low, considering that she was a full-term baby. Bringing her into the world had been a harrowing, complicated ordeal, but I had no idea that things should have been different. She was my first, she was gorgeous and she was mine, and that was all that mattered. The doctors thought so too, at least at first. But then came the tests, and the examinations, and the referrals to specialists, “just to make sure that everything’s alright.” But six weeks later, nothing was alright any longer. The pediatric neurologist gave us the final verdict. “Your child has suffered serious damage to important areas of her brain. It’s impossible to predict precisely how she will develop over the years, but it is clear that there will be significant physical and mental delays.” I had always thought the shattering of one’s world took just a moment, like the splaying of shards as a crystal vase hits the floor. But for us, my husband and I, it was more like an ominous thundercloud, rolling over us in slow motion until we thought we could no longer breathe. Over the following weeks, we left our beautiful Miri in the hospital as we went home to absorb the impact of the diagnosis. And to make a decision. We were young, so very young. I had been the first in my class to get married, and my nineteenth birthday was just

approaching when Miri was born. The bliss of shana rishona, though not yet even officially over, faded before the enormity of what lay before us. We spoke to Rabbanim, to our Rebbe, to my parents, to my husband’s parents, and in rare moments of bravery, between ourselves. And then, on the advice of the great people we consulted, and our own understanding of the situation, we gave her away. One Rav, one of the wisest men I’d ever met, told me, “Sometimes, a child is meant to be brought into the world by one set of parents, and raised by another. Hashem wants you to accept His will wholeheartedly.” But I didn’t accept. For months, and even years, I railed against Hashem. Why had He done this to me? I had expected my life to be perfect. I didn’t deserve this. I knew I wanted Miri, but only a perfect Miri who would grow and develop in perfect sync with her peers. I clung to the dream that one day, the doctors would discover that they had all been wrong, that Miri was really just fine, and then I could take her home. The warm and kindly chassidishe family that had taken in Miri treated her like a princess. I knew, because whenever I could summon the courage, I went to visit her. Alone. My husband dealt with it in his own way, and chose to remain home. The family treated me with sincere respect, and would give me my privacy with my child. I would hold her for

Homemade Pizza 3 cups flour ½ cup apple juice ½ cup lukewarm water 1` T oil 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt 1 pkg. dry yeast or 1 oz. fresh yeast

Topping: 1 8oz. can tomato sauce ½ tsp. garlic powder ¼ tsp. black pepper 1 T oregano 2 T oil 12 oz. grated Muenster cheese • Combine all dough ingredients, kneading well. • Let rise for ½ an hour. • Roll out into two large rounds, approximately 8-10 inches. • Combine tomato sauce with spices and spread on evenly on rounds. • Sprinkle shredded cheese over sauce. • Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
