If a picture paints a thousand words, then this special travel edition could almost be classed as a novel.

Editor’s letter IF A PICTURE paints a thousand words, then this special travel edition could almost be classed as a novel. It starts with our stunning cover image of Santorini which was taken by award-winning Brisbane photographer Alex Huang. The travel/photography bug bit Alex when he was quite young and he has spent decades perfecting his craft in the world’s most exotic locations. You can see more of his work on pages 98-99. At the other end of the spectrum, New Zealand’s Russ McLean was given his first camera for his 60th birthday. Since then he has enjoyed many hours behind the lens capturing the picturesque landscapes of his home country. Again you will find more of his amazing shots inside this issue. Sport photography is in a different realm, so sourcing action shots for our feature story on Andy Murray took us from the Rio Olympic Games to the courts of Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena. In this case the words are just as interesting as the images, with the recently knighted tennis champion opening up about his career, his charity endeavours and his new coach, Ivan Lendl. If you are more interested in music than sport, we have a preview of Opera Queensland’s entire 2017 season and we

also invite you to join us at the inaugural Opera Meets Swing Black Tie Dinner Dance in the Grand Ballroom at the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort. Proudly presented by the Alfieri family, with the support of Cove magazine, this promises to be an elegant evening featuring fine food and sensational sounds. Back to travel, and we have showcased some of our favourite luxury cruise lines and destinations. Silversea Expeditions is ready to meet the challenge of Antarctica and the Arctic circle, Regent Seven Seas Cruises will be sailing to Cuba for the first time in history and Spicers Peak Lodge offers the chance to relax and unwind in the scenic hinterland. Meanwhile, the style file pages are ‘as pretty as a picture’, the cuisine section tempts you with a delicious selection of ‘art on a plate’ and the event calendar brings you the latest ‘instagram-worthy’ entertainment. Finally, our new competition offers the opportunity to stay in one of the world’s most photogenic hotels, with a luxurious accommodation and dining package from Palazzo Versace … smile.

The top of his game British tennis player Andy Murray continues to excel, both on and off the court.

WORDS CEZAR GREIF/COOL HUNT INC./THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

2016 WAS A FANTASTIC YEAR for British tennis player Andy Murray, with a victory at Wimbledon, a gold medal at the Rio Olympics and a number one ATP ranking. And 2017 started even better when he received a knighthood in Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year’s Honors list. In this candid interview, Andy discusses his career, his hometown and his coach’s terrible jokes.

coach and ex professional tennis player, so tennis was an easy route for me to pursue. I actually played a lot of football up until I was about 13 or 14 years of age, however, I eventually had to make the decision on which one I was going to try seriously. I had trials for Glasgow Rangers, so if tennis hadn’t worked out, I would probably have tried hard to forge myself a career in professional football.

Dunblane is where I was brought up and it has a special place in my heart. Although I only get to visit two or three times a year, it’s somewhere that holds some of my best memories. I got married to my wife, Kim, there and my grandparents and father still live there. I recently bought and renovated an old hotel [Cromlix House] there as well. My brother got married at the hotel a few years back and plenty of friends and relatives use the Albert Roux Restaurant attached to the hotel, so that’s great. The support the town has given me over the years has been nothing short of incredible and I’ll always be grateful for that. >>

You decided to leave home at 15 to train in Spain. I’m wondering how you came to that decision? Leaving home is never an easy decision, but again it was another moment in my life where I knew that if I wanted to succeed and seriously chase a career in professional tennis, I needed to ensure I had the best possible set up around me. Sanchaz-Casal is somewhere that I had heard a lot about, and a lot of the best tennis players in the world were training on clay courts every day, something which the UK doesn’t have. After talking with my parents I decided that if I wanted to be the best I had to go and train with the best, so I left home for Barcelona. The decision turned out pretty good. People were surprised when it was announced that Ivan Lendl was going to be your coach. How familiar were you with him before making that decision? I think people were surprised because not many players at that time had ‘big name’ ex-players as coaches. People kept talking about our differences at the beginning but a lot of people forgot that Ivan lost three or four grand slam finals before he managed to find the breakthrough. At that time I had lost a few finals and I was looking for someone who could help me get over the line. Ivan was an incredibly hard worker as a player and he knew straight away how to get the best out of me. He had some incredible matches during his career, he is probably one of the greatest players from that era of tennis, so I definitely knew it was the right appointment.

the training a lot easier. He needs to work on some of his jokes though, most of which aren’t printable here. Compared to the era of Lendl, it does seem like players play much longer nowadays. How do you explain that? It’s very difficult to compare our eras of tennis because the differences between now and then are huge. There’s a lot more on offer to players now that can help them to play longer. Players use physiotherapists more than ever because they are recognising the importance of recovery and, also, that it takes a lot more than just training to keep your body in perfect condition. There’s a lot more emphasis now on being strong and flexible than there was back then, and obviously both of those are important to fitness and health later in your career. The technology on offer is also crucial. Back then players’ racquets were heavy, rarely customised and pretty basic, whereas now it’s totally different, some of the technology in tennis racquets is incredible. There have also been advances in nutrition. Lots of small improvements in these different areas add up.

you can, especially when you’re not on the court. To be able to compete at the highest level, you need to train harder than anyone else, and that’s something I think I do which really helps me when I’m playing in a long and difficult match. Do you have a specific routine to deal with the constant pressure, both on court and off court? I just try and keep everything the same. Myself and my team have a routine on match days that we rarely change. I’ll always do the same warm up, the same drills in practice and eat around the same times before each match. I know that if I do all these things I’ll be in the best possible position I can be to win matches. Ensuring that I have worked as hard as I can is all I need to go into a match confident. For a time you had the unique task of carrying the nation of Great Britain on your shoulders. How did you deal with this? Pressure is good, it makes you want to always better yourself. People always asked me about how I dealt with the pressure of the whole country wanting me to win Wimbledon and whether it affected me. If I’m honest, I enjoyed the pressure. In a way, it was nice to know that so many people wanted me to succeed and cared about the result.

NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE For subscriptions please call +61 5577 9499

Is there a side of him you experience while training that the public doesn’t know? Not really, Ivan is just Ivan. He’s not really like anyone you’ll ever meet. He knows how to work me incredibly hard, but he also knows when I just need someone to listen to my concerns, and he’s great at that. He’ll always ask me if there’s anything I want to work on (which he normally already knows about anyway). He’s a great guy and he’s a lot of fun to be around, which makes

22

“Right now though I’m pretty focused on being the best I can be as a player on the court and a father and husband off of it.” – Andy Murray What does it take to be able to compete at this extremely high level? I think it’s important to remember that every player is different. In my opinion it’s not always good to keep your feelings bottled up. If I’m frustrated after a point I sometimes let the emotion out but it’s vital that I am focused for the next point and don’t let anything affect that. You have to make sure you always believe in yourself and that comes from working as hard

It’s the same with nerves. I enjoy having nerves as it keeps me focused and on edge and ready to play my best. Do you think success, particularly your Grand Slam titles, has helped you be more relaxed than before? It’s important not to get too carried away, no matter how successful you have been. You have to focus on one match at a time, it can be easy to look ahead or look back at other results. The main thing is to just focus on your own game. As long as you’ve prepared yourself as best you can for every tournament and give your all, you can always walk off the court with your head held high, whatever the pressure or the outcome. >>

You’re maybe the first professional male tennis player to have been coached by a woman, Amelie Mauresmo. Did you notice any differences between being coached by men and by a woman? No, every coach has different attributes, but that’s down to their style of coaching, gender makes absolutely no difference to their ability. What do you think still needs to be done to break the gender barrier in the game? That’s a very difficult one to answer, because right now there aren’t many female coaches in the men’s game. People need to be more accepting and recognise that gender doesn’t make a difference to ability and professionalism. You finished 2016 at the top of the ATP rankings. When did becoming No. 1 start becoming a goal for you? Being number one in the world is something that every player dreams about. Aside from winning Grand Slams, it’s the pinnacle of the game. To be able to say that you’ve been the best at what you do in the whole world, isn’t something that many people can say. It’s always been a goal for me. I’ve just been unfortunate, that so many of the guys around me have been playing so well and so consistently. It’s always been at the back of my mind, but I’ve never tried to focus on it too much. I’ve just made sure that I keep focusing on the moment, making sure I prepare for every match and tournament as best I can, to give myself the best chance of winning, and then hopefully the ranking will take care of itself.

I know you’re involved with charities, can you tell me a bit more about that. It’s always been really important to me to give back where I can, and I’m really fortunate to be able to work with some amazing charities. I’m really passionate about animal welfare, so I’ve worked with the World Wildlife Fund and United for Wildlife for a number of years now. A lot of my work with them focuses around conservation and putting a stop to the illegal wildlife trade. We are incredibly lucky to live on a planet that has some of the most amazing species on it, and we should do everything we can to protect them and not exploit them. I’m also passionate about protecting the children of the world, particularly those that live in areas that are dangerous or caught up in war. UNICEF do some incredible work caring for and supporting child refugees that have been displaced through conflicts, and being able to help reunite children with their families and provide them with shelter and food is really important to me. The images of the past few years have shocked everyone, but it particularly hit home with me as a new father, so towards the end of last season, for every ace I served I made a donation to UNICEF’s efforts in the refugee crisis in Europe. Putting an end to Malaria is something that is also incredibly important to me. Over a million people die each year from it but it’s a preventable disease and one that we hope will be eradicated in my lifetime, so I also work with Malaria No More who do lots of work in this space. I don’t just work with charities in an Ambassadorial role, I recently participated in my own charity tennis exhibition match (Andy Murray Live) which was a great success. We raised a phenomenal amount of money for UNICEF and a local charity called Young Peoples Futures. It’s something that we hope to take around the world eventually and raise as much money as we can wherever we go.

I’ve read that you have a passion for boxing, is it true? I love boxing. Muhammad Ali is, in my opinion, the greatest sportsman that has ever lived, and his career has always fascinated me. He was an incredibly hard worker in and out of the ring, which is something I’ve tried to replicate in my career. If there’s ever boxing on I’ll always make sure I watch it, particularly with the British fighters. British boxing is incredibly strong right now, and we have world champions in a lot of divisions, which is great for the sport. I’m not sure I’d ever have the courage to get in the ring though, it’s a brutal sport. In terms of fashion, can you define your style and the brands you like to wear? As I’m always somewhere between the tennis courts, the gym or the comfort of a hotel room, it’ll probably come as no surprise that I love to wear comfortable clothes most of the time. It’s important that I wear functional gear during the day, thankfully Under Armour make some great clothing. They’ve recently released UA Sport. It debuted at New York Fashion Week, so it’s a bit more luxurious than traditional sportswear. When the time is right though, I do enjoy putting on a good suit. There are plenty of brilliant British tailors.

24

What do you see yourself doing in the future? I’m not really sure at the moment. I still have a good few years left to play in my career, so I haven’t thought too much about it. I still think my best tennis is ahead of me. I think in the first instance, I’ll definitely take some time away from the game, just so that I can enjoy some down time with my family. That’s the one thing about being a professional sportsmen that is tough, you spend long periods of time away from your family, so I think as soon as I stop playing tennis, I’ll spend as much time as I possibly can at home. Maybe after a break I could get into coaching as it’s something that interests me. I also have set up my own management agency, so working with young talent in other sports is also of interest. Right now though I’m pretty focused on being the best I can be as a player on the court and a father and husband off of it.

ICONIC BRANDS

TAG Heuer Pacific Fair Grand Opening

Perfect timing Like its timepieces, the TAG Heuer name perfectly melds tradition with modernity, incorporating the best of both.

WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT

LIKE SO MANY of the world’s iconic luxury brands, the story of TAG Heuer begins with a young visionary whose passion for style and perfection saw the emergence of something unique and enduring. Even in Switzerland, the undisputed Pied Piper of watch and clockmaking, Edouard Heuer stood out. Ever the innovator, the man at the heart of the now-exalted TAG Heuer empire invented the stem-winding system for timepieces only nine years after establishing his first workshop in St Imier, followed by the oscillating pinion in 1887. These developments not only simplified the mechanisms but allowed for increased production at lower cost, giving the burgeoning young company a marked commercial edge. Patented by TAG Heuer in 1911, the launch of the first dashboard chronograph ‘Time Trip’, was designed for aircraft and automobiles.

26

This marked the company’s initial step into its now intrinsic relationship with international sports, born of its reputation for unparalled excellence and constant innovation in the accuracy of timekeeping. This continued with the advent of the Mikrograph which, as the first mechanical stopwatch capable of measuring 1/100th of a second, revolutionised sports timekeeping. Not surprisingly, the official stopwatch used for the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp – and again at the Paris and Amsterdam Games – was a Heuer. Sequential enhancements to the design of Heuer timepieces saw a 100-fold improvement in their accuracy within a century – from being able to measure 1/100th of a second in 1916 to 1/10,000th of a second in 2002 – hence their longtime association with motor sports, which enjoyed a particularly golden period in the mid-20th century.

What had begun with the ‘Time of Trip’ and, later, the Autavia dashboard timer, continued with the release of the Carrera chronograph timepiece which celebrated the spectacular success of legendary Argentinian racer, Juan Manuel Fangio, in the Carrera Panamericana Mexico races. But it is the Monaco Calibre 11 model – famously sported by actor Steve McQueen in the film Le Mans and widely known ever since as ‘the McQueen Monaco’ – that remains the brand’s most recognisable, and coveted, wristwatch. The ‘TAG’ that now proudly complements Edouard’s surname came in 1985, when TAG Group Holdings (Techniques d’Avant Garde) bought the Heuer company and the brand took on the name we know so well today. The move to timekeeping for the Formula One – the world’s most prestigious motor racing event – was inevitable, and is an association TAG Heuer proudly continues today.

But the excellence the company has long been renowned for is matched by a distinct and unfussy style that, due to its continued presence in popular culture, makes TAG Heuer timepieces instantly recognisable. The luxury range now includes the first Connected Watch developed by a luxury Swiss watchmaker. Engineered with Intel Inside and powered by Android Wear, TAG Heuer really does continue to set the standard of watchmaking. Were he still here, Edouard would be justifiably proud of the path the small company he pioneered is taking today. And then he’d go back to his workshop, where he would be working on something that was about to change timekeeping forever … >>

The McQueen Monaco The TAG Heuer Monaco was first introduced in 1969 in honor of the Monaco Grand Prix. The Monaco is a highly sought-after timepiece which has become one of the most iconic models of all time. The Monaco Calibre 11 model was distinct on a number of fronts, being set apart by its large square casing, blue dial with red minute hand and the positioning of its crown on the left, which meant it didn’t need winding. And it was water resistant – a world first for a square watch. This was actor Steve McQueen’s timepiece of choice when playing racing driver Michael Delaney in the 1971 film Le Mans, as he felt it lent authenticity to the role. The enduring popularity of both McQueen and the film saw the model become a perennial range favourite. Long nicknamed ‘the McQueen Monaco’, the original model, which was discontinued in the 1970s, remains one of the most highly-prized timepieces in international vintage watch markets.

Fashion department Harrolds is globally renowned as Australia’s luxury department store.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM

BALENCIAGA … Stella McCartney … Balmain … Alexander McQueen … Victoria Beckham … other than the obvious, what do these luxurious fashion brands have in common? They can all be found in one stylish retail space. “Harrolds is Australia’s luxury department store and home to the finest fashion and accessories from around the world,” explains Mary Poulakis, whose husband John founded the company in 1985. “Our combination of luxurious service and carefully curated merchandise from over 70 of the world’s best designers provides one of the finest retail experiences in the world.” From a humble 90sqm boutique space on Collins Street in Melbourne, Harrolds has grown into a living fashion institution with stores in Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast.

34

Their flagship boutique in the newly refurbished Pacific Fair has filled a gap in the market for both locals and tourists. “There has been an outcry for luxury fashion in Queensland for many years and we saw a fantastic opportunity to make a home at Pacific Fair,” says Mary. Originally selling men’s corporate clothing, John expanded into women’s clothing in 2015, after realising only half the market was being serviced. This was quickly followed by a move into fashion labels for a younger demographic. “Three young men walked past my shop in Melbourne and one said, ‘That is a fantastic store, it’s where my father shops.’ “From that moment I decided I had to get into the fashion lines for young people,” John explains.

“Harrolds now offers a perfectly balanced collection of men’s and women’s tailoring, accessories and ready-to-wear from leading international labels including Tom Ford, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, ACNE STUDIOS and Kenzo,” adds Mary. “We have an expert team of buyers with a wealth of experience in selecting the finest pieces. Our buyers attend showrooms and runways in fashion capitals around the world to stay up to date with designers, trends and the changing fashion landscape.” In addition to the well known international labels, Harrolds also stock a select range of their own designs. “In a sense, Harrolds Private Label is a collection designed by our owners to suit the needs of our customers,” says Mary.

Lighting the way Cosmetic laser treatments can produce specific results while minimising unwanted side effects.

WORDS CHRISTINE DOGGETT

IN OUR TECHNOLOGICAL world today, we hear the term ‘laser’ used in reference to so many different circumstances. It can become confusing until we understand what a laser is and what we require of it. In the world of cosmetic surgery and beauty treatments, lasers are calibrated very specifically, and expertly used by qualified practitioners to achieve a specific result, such as removing unwanted pigmentation. It is exciting that cosmetic laser treatments are constantly being advanced, leading to new applications in improving the appearance of the skin. In laser skin resurfacing, lasers are used to reduce wrinkles around the lips and eyes, even the entire face, softening fine lines and removing certain pigmentations and other coloured blemishes on the face. Skin resurfacing removes the epidermis (upper layer) and penetrates into the deeper papillary dermis, which responds by producing new collagen. Cosmetic lasers are also used in the removal of birthmarks, such as port-wine stain birthmarks, hyper-pigmentation and skin lesions. Abnormal blood vessels are reduced in size by the laser, which results in a lightening of the area. Scars, skin growths, varicose and ‘spiderveins’, warts and some tattoos also respond to laser treatment; some will respond to a single treatment while others will require more than one. With regards to tattoo removal, the specific wave-length targets and breaks up the pigments in the tattoo ink, and they are eliminated by the body’s waste system. A professional practitioner knows which equipment is essential for effective and safe treatment. The strength and calibration of laser delivery system for acne revision and skin rejuvenation will differ from that used for vein removal.

36

Of interest to both men and women are hair removal or reduction treatments where the energy from the laser is tuned to heat up and de-activate hair follicles, preventing them from further activity.

In general, the practitioner will use the minimum laser intensity possible to achieve the desired results. The lower intensity preserves healthy tissue and several treatments may be required.

A concentrated beam of light is aimed at the hair. The light is absorbed by the pigment, which damages the hair follicle enough to retard future growth. The trained practitioner can selectively target dark coarse hairs, while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. “Blonde and grey hairs cannot be treated with laser,” says Philip Morgenstern who, along with his wife Irena, has over 30 years of experience in laser treatments. “Laser hair removal is often purported to be 100 per cent complete and permanent, and in most cases it is not. Usually, however, long-term hair reduction is achievable.” Patients are usually advised to avoid sun exposure and limit plucking, waxing and electrolysis prior to laser treatment to allow the root to grow. The laser equipment will be adjusted according to the colour, thickness and location of your hair, as well as your skin colour. Unwanted hair can be removed from the face (for example, the upper lip), legs, arms, underarms, bikini line and other areas. Results may vary from person to person and several treatments may be required for larger areas, and ‘touch-up’ treatments may be necessary. And in complete contrast, lasers are often used to prepare the area where hair transplants will be placed. LASER is the acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. They work by generating a concentrated and penetrating stream of pulsed light that can be controlled and strategically directed over the skin. In laser surgery, these lasers, which produce high energy, focused beams of intense ‘single-

Often the procedures are performed as outpatient treatments in hospitals or the practitioners’ offices. Every person is different and will respond differently to a laser treatment. Factors to be considered include skin sensitivity, pain tolerance and even lifestyle habits such as smoking, excessive sun exposure or the use of certain drugs or skin care products. It is important to disclose these factors to your doctor when determining the course of treatment. Lasers are not a ‘one size fits all’ procedure. The equipment is highly specialised and calibrated for specific purposes. The wave-length and energy levels are adjusted for each specific purpose. Some lasers you may have heard of include the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Laser, used for resurfacing to treat wrinkles, acne scars, other scarring, warts, birthmarks, skin tags, skin cancer, corns on feet and saggy skin (encouraging collagen production for skin tightening). Expect one to two weeks for healing. The Erbium YAG Laser is less invasive than the CO2 Laser and is used to treat finer lines. The Fraxel Laser delivers thousands of microscopic pixelated heat injuries to the skin to stimulate collagen production. The surrounding skin is not affected and there is minimal downtime. Thermage is particularly effective for tightening lax collagen in somewhat sagging skin and offers minimal downtime with some pinkness and minor swelling which is gone in a couple of days. treatment for superficial brown spots, redness and broken capillaries, and repeated treatments will stimulate collagen production, with no downtime. There are two main types of lasers; one is non-ablative, meaning it targets specific depths or colours while leaving the top layer of skin

side effects. It is important to find a facial plastic surgeon or a certified professional, especially if treating the face and neck area. Lasers have specific applications, and your practitioner is the best source of information for your particular condition as they will be able to explain what can be accomplished and how.

able to accurately and specifically target a particular problem in the skin,” says Irena Morgenstern from Irena Morgenstern Skin Management, Brisbane. “It is this specificity for a particular target that allows laser to successfully treat problems such as a sunspot, capillary, or hair without affecting the surrounding normal skin.” “Other lasers are able to ablate (vapourise) a layer of skin and heat the skin to induce new collagen production and collagen reorganisation to reduce wrinkles, tighten skin, and improve skin texture. These lasers are classified as ablative lasers,” adds Phillip. Your practitioner will advise about downtime, which could be up to a couple of weeks, and will also will give you instructions for post-surgery care, such as using sunblock and avoiding exposure to the sun, and the use of anti-biotic ointments if appropriate during the healing process. You will probably experience a bronzing effect as with sunburn with some skin redness and swelling for several days. Redness and heat is sometimes the only sensation, as patient comfort levels are all individual and different. A laser skin resurfacing treatment will transform and improve the appearance of your skin. It only treats the top most fraction of your skin, and does not affect underlying muscles, fatty layers or bone structure, so the shape of your face or facial features are not changed. It is designed to cause heating and wound action by vaporising skin cells to induce the natural skin reaction of collagen and elastin formation to replace the damaged skin. Your skin will heal and become smoother and also more supple and even. The full impact may not be apparent for a month or so. Laser treatments are developed through sound scientific principles to produce specific results while minimising unwanted

un-harmed. Procedures include hair removal, skin rejuvenation, depigmentation and tattoo removal. There is minimal downtime, and the patient can return to work or their normal activities on the same day. Ablative or cutting lasers work by destroying the top layers of the skin such as mole removal, scar revision and laser resurfacing. “Some lasers are classified as non-ablative as these lasers are

Keep smiling What do you need to know about dental implant therapy? DENTAL IMPLANT THERAPY can provide a life-long solution to missing teeth. Done properly it is a safe and painless procedure. However, like any other invasive surgery, dental implants should only be placed by a properly qualified and experienced practitioner. Unfortunately, some advertisements for dental implant surgery can be very misleading. Often general dentists will promote themselves as ‘dental implant specialists’, however, there is no such thing as a specialist dental implantologist in Australia. Dr Neil Latcham has been a Periodontist (and registered dental specialist) on the Gold Coast for 26 years and has placed well over 12,000 dental implants. “I have seen many patients who have sought my assistance after undergoing unsuccessful dental implant therapy with a general dentist,” Neil says. “Recently, I consulted with a patient from regional Queensland who had retained a general dentist for implant therapy after having

seen a television advertisement suggesting that the practitioner was a dental implant specialist. Although the unsuspecting patient paid the dentist a significant fee, she endured a needlessly painful and uncomfortable procedure and the implant completely failed.” This sort of case demonstrates how important it is for patients considering dental implants to be careful in choosing their practitioner. Here are some useful points to assist in making this decision. Firstly, ask if the dentist is a registered specialist. As already pointed out, just because a dentist states that he or she as a specialist in dental implant surgery does not mean that they are, in fact, registered. In the majority of cases, the placement of a dental implant is not a simple, straightforward surgery. There are possible complications and, if not done properly, patients can suffer significant and permanent harm. A registered specialist will not only be more qualified than a general dentist,

they are more likely to have greater experience in this type of surgery. Keep in mind that you do not need a referral to see a registered dental specialist. You can consult with the practitioner directly without the need for a referring dentist. Once you have chosen the practitioner to perform your implant surgery, you should then ensure that he or she advises you of the risks involved in the procedure. “Unfortunately, I see several patients each year who have permanent numbness of their lip or are in constant pain following the inappropriate surgical placement of a dental implant,” says Neil. “You need to know the possible complications in your case and likelihood of these occurring.” You should also be aware of what you will look like following dental implant therapy. A poorly placed dental implant in the front of the mouth can look unsightly unless it is planned and placed properly by an experienced practitioner.

Another thing to consider is the need for treatment prior to the placement of the implant. The periodontal health of other teeth need to be assessed and any gum disease should be treated prior to dental implant therapy, as dental implants like teeth, can also suffer from gum disease. FinalIy, check if there is any warranty offered and what the practitioner’s recommendations are for follow up and post surgery. At Doctor Latham’s practice patients are given a 30-year warranty on all dental implants placed on the condition the patient does not smoke and they return to the clinic annually for a check up of the dental implant. Dental implant therapy done properly, and subsequently checked and maintained, should provide you with a permanent, attractive and comfortable solution to missing teeth.

Chef profile DANIEL TIBBETTS PIZZA CHEF, MECCA BAH, BRISBANE

FOR ALL YOUR

DANIEL has been working as a Pizza Chef at Fortitude Valley’s Mecca Bah for the past two years. Born and raised in Brisbane, Daniel was exposed to a wide range of different cuisines from an early age, visiting restaurants and listening to the hustle and bustle of the kitchen, and enjoying the amazing smells wafting out and the beautiful food served. “I really wanted to see what was happening on the other side of the walls and how they created those tantalising dishes,” he recalls. The proudest moment of his career was when he was approached by the owner of Mecca Bah and asked to start Pizza Classes so the public could experience what it is like being a chef while recreating his delicious flavours. As with most chefs, Daniel draws inspiration from many sources including Mecca Bah’s customers. “Whenever I receive a compliment about the food it inspires me to keep the standards high and continue searching for better and more exciting flavours,” he says. For others contemplating a career as a chef, Daniel has some simple advice. “Prepare yourself for a lot of hard work. In such a high intensity environment, you need to keep your wits about you as it can go from 0 to 100 really quickly.” As for 2017, Daniel believes that Middle Eastern food is on the rise, but the biggest trend will be locally sourced food with much more attention on fresh and simple flavours.

What’s for brunch A casual compromise between breakfast and lunch, brunch is enjoying a resurgence in popularity.

Hugo Cocktail WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE

A CALL TO BRUNCH involves a string of text messages fired off in rapid sequence – time, place, cuisine … until agreement is reached, often settling on the alternative with the least resistance. While some may consider brunch a timewaster, a nowhere land of indulgence between breakfast and lunch, in the relaxed world of cruising, brunch can be a tonic – a time to relax on a weekend morning following an early start; a time before the heat of the day claims us all as victims. Brunch was always meant to be an ‘in between’ meal. Englishman Guy Beringer in his 1895 essay ‘Brunch: A Plea’, published in Hunter’s Weekly, proposed brunch as a pseudo-meal to ease hangover sufferers into more substantial fare served at lunch. ‘’Brunch is cheerful, sociable and inciting,’’ Beringer says. ‘’It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.’’ By the 1920s, the concept had extended to America. Chicago, a mid-journey rail stopover city, saw actors like John Barrymore and Clark Gable stop to take brunch at the famed Pump Room at the Ambassador Hotel. Before long, a Bloody Mary and pancakes for brunch had become ‘de rigeur’ for the well-heeled set.

54

Recently, there’s been a resurgence in brunch trade in New York, LA and London. For many, brunch is the event of the weekend, with ‘brunch dressing’ just as important an element as ‘gymwear as daywear’ is to an Instagram-worthy weekend wardrobe. On the Gold Coast, brunch has become the new meet-up. It’s a win-win for both restaurants and diners – a casual cost-effective meal without the complication of drinks. Many restaurants are now beginning to offer more than standard breakfasts, with creative experimentation on both the sweet and savoury fronts. For boat owners, brunch is an ideal meal to share with friends or clients. It’s a chance to get out on the water, to leave the coast behind to create your own experience either in the shallows or on a tropical island. When planning your menu, think fresh. Just a little preparation will pay dividends. Source some great seafood from the trawlers or from your favourite outlet, (after all, no meal on the water is complete without prawns), create a baked dish which can be served cold and cut up a platter of fruit. Then add a selection of suitable drinks. With a local beer in hand or a Hugo cocktail (Europe’s latest on trend summer drink), you can ease gracefully into a day on the water.

Our menu suggestions: • Muesli pots with poached rhubarb, berries and Greek yoghurt. • Asparagus, zucchini and cream cheese loaf topped with spreadable cream cheese, smoked salmon, red onion/shallots and capers. • Lobster or king prawn ribbon sandwiches. • Seasonal fruit platter.

HUGO COCKTAIL I ngredients 100 ml prosecco or brut sparkling wine 150 ml soda water 1 - 2 tsp elderflower liqueur (such as St Germain) Mint leaves 2 lime wedges, juiced 1 lime, sliced for decoration Method 1. Crush 4 mint leaves and add to a large wine glass. 2. Add elderflower liqueur. 3 Add the lime juice, prosecco and soda water. Stir well. 4 Add more mint leaves and lime slices and a straw to serve.

WINE CELLAR

Tassie’s Tolpuddle The Tolpuddle story begins in Dorset, England, and weaves its way to a picturesque vineyard in Tasmania. WORDS TONY HARPER

TASMANIA IS AN ISLAND with an ofteninhumane past that can, in some instances, beggar belief and a present that, in so many ways, holds the keys to our future. A tiny part of that future and a slab of past lie in a small patch of vineyards, not quite 15 kilometres crow-flight from Hobart, known as Tolpuddle. Here’s the past … It’s 1834 in Dorset, England, and a bunch of workers have organised themselves to fight for better wages, forming the template for what would become trade unions. The six most vocal were shipped out to Australia as punishment, to shout their angst to kookaburras, tigers and devils. Their transportation sparked a nationwide protest that helped catalyse change: a petition of 800,000 signatories was raised and the original sentence of seven years transportation was culled to three. Well done dissidents … If you happen to live in Dorset the Tolpuddle story will be familiar – those six became known as the Tolpuddle Martyrs and are celebrated with an annual festival and a town with the Tolpuddle Martyrs as its central theme. George Loveless – the leader of the pack – ended up farming a piece of Tasmanian land that was planted to grapes, 150 years later, by a couple of young men that would forge divergent but equally powerful paths through Australia’s wine trade; Garry Crittenden and Tony Jordan.

62

Their intuition and horticultural savvy – no matter how far-fetched they might have seemed at the time – have proven uncanny. If you happen to know either of them, it would be no surprise. In 2011 the vineyard was purchased by Shaw and Smith – an Adelaide Hills wine company that I’m sure will be familiar to most readers. Until then Tolpuddle supplied fruit for plenty of icon wines and had built quite a serious reputation despite the fact that, until the Shaw and Smith purchase, its progeny was never bottled under its own name. Cousins Michael Hill-Smith and Martin Shaw – a pair of South Australian blue-bloods – are the minds behind Shaw and Smith. On an exploratory road trip, fuelled by the interest in Tasmania due to the growing fascination for pinot noir (particularly) and chardonnay and the unease about global warming, the pair stumbled upon the vineyard. It wasn’t for sale. But they bought it. Five years later the vineyard has been lavished with care and cunning, the trellising re-worked, some grafting, the removal of airflow-restrictions, beneficial crops between the rows … all the stuff of contemporary farming, which means leaching the best from age-old wisdom and applying it with insight. The 20 hectares are planted to pinot noir and chardonnay which follows the Burgundian model of carefully selected varieties, but also the model of every other wine-growing place that has existed

long enough to find its strengths – working only with grapes that can capture the essence of the site. And there is a tangible essence to the Tolpuddle vineyard. 2012 was the inaugural release under the Tolpuddle label and the Shaw and Smith team. Four years have seen a nice diversity of vintages and a learning curve for those in the saddle. Plus there has been the plucking of the very talented Adam Wadewitz (winemaker) from his more corporate headquarters at Seppelt and the appointment of Carlos Souris as the day-to-day manager of the vineyard. The inherent characters of the wines kind of work like this … Chardonnay is fine, crunchy, acid-driven and varyingly complex. When young it can look a little oaky, but everything settles into a happy mineral and citrus, nut and lemon curd kind of thing. Some vintages are richer, others leaner, but it is nipping at the heels of the best in the country. The Tolpuddle chardonnays are made to be cellared – five to ten years depending on vintage. Pinot noir isn’t nipping at the heels, it’s grappling Farr, Bindi, Curly Flat, Bass Phillip and Coldstream for the title and the winner here is only decided by personal preference. Stylistically it is fairly taut – driven by tannin and acid – but plush enough to still appear quite svelte.

BENOWA MANSIONS PERIODONTAL AND DENTAL IMPLANT PRACTICE

Qualified Dental Specialist or a general dentist? It is for you to decide …

Stems and whole bunch play varying roles across the vintages, but there is a sinew that comes with Tasmania – chewiness, sap, a flicker of bean amid the cherries – and it only adds complexity. These are powerful reds, despite their status of being – at best – medium bodied: the power is in the structure and line. If you think Burgundy is the hallowed ground for pinot noir, these wines are haunting its halls. And given the infancy, not of the vineyard but of the Tolpuddle exercise, that is remarkable. Burgundy has its story built emphatically on vineyards. The great plots of land are legendary – Romanee Conti, La Romanee, Musigny, Montrachet, Richebourg – and those in their wake are still expensive enough to be ogle-worthy and, given the finite nature of burgundy, legends in the making. Will Tolpuddle, given time to take its place in the hierarchy and another decade to sink into its geographical skin, be a Tasmanian version of the Burgundy greats? On face value it seems far-fetched. But if you taste enough burgundy and think through the puzzle of hallowed sites, there is every chance it will. Musigny and Richebourg enjoy the allure built on centuries of great wine. But time only affirms its status; it doesn’t – with a flick of the wand – improve the wine. The Shaw and Smith team are confident that Tolpuddle has the makings of an important vineyard for pinot noir and chardonnay, and they are clever chaps. I believe them.

WELL TRAVELLED

Desert courses Australia’s Northern Territory – a golf frontier like no other.

Darwin

Alice Springs Golf Club WORDS PAUL PRENDERGAST PHOTOGRAPHY MARK WILSON

OVER 1.5 MILLION VISITORS are attracted annually to Australia's vast and diverse ‘Top End’, lured by destinations that include the world famous Kakadu National Park, the chance to explore and swim in mesmerising waterfalls and be awed by ancient Aboriginal rock art, and to admire the rich outback of the Red Centre with its stunning desert canyons, iconic landforms and vast skies. The capital, Darwin, is the thriving gateway to these attractions and is a cosmopolitan hub rich in history and progressive development in its own right. Well-appointed as it is to service tourism, entertainment and convention markets with world class hotels, a bustling cruise ship terminal and a diverse entertainment scene, the city is often underestimated for its capacity to provide those who visit an outlet to play golf. Packing the clubs, and combining much that the Territory has to offer by way of its diverse food scene, nightlife, wildlife, fishing, sailing and world heritage listed outback adventures into your itinerary, is a great option.

64

While the city itself, and the Territory in general, is not yet blessed with a vast array of golf courses and resorts by comparison to similar tropical locations, it is a golf destination that is absolutely unique in nature. The golf landscape in the Territory is likely to change quite rapidly too, judging by the aspirations many of the clubs in the city alone have for their future. Legendary Australian golfer Peter Thomson has left his stamp in the Top End as designer of the Darwin Golf Club and the highly regarded Alice Springs layout in the Red Centre, which is ranked in Australia’s top 100 golf courses and acclaimed as one of the most spectacular desert courses in the world. Darwin Golf Club is a mature layout not far from the city’s International Airport and the club is the midst of a strategic tree removal program, not unlike that untaken at the 2016 U.S. Open venue Oakmont, to help restore the layout to Thomson’s original design intentions. Palmerston Golf Club – host to the inaugural Northern Territory PGA Championship in

August 2016 – is another established, parkland style golf course with an appealing mix of holes that plans to capitalise on an expansion of local and international golf tourism, not to mention the influx of people moving to Darwin to work in an array of flourishing industries that include oil, gas, agriculture and mining. The successful staging of the Northern Territory PGA was testament to a number of key people who had a vision to bring first class golf to the Top End. The Championship was the first ever PGA Tour of Australasia event played in the NT and was remarkable on many fronts, not the least for the job done by a number of passionate Territorians to pull the event together in a short period of time. Amid emotional scenes, 24-year-old Jordan Zunic took out his second major Australian event at Palmerston to add to his dramatic breakthrough triumph at the NZ Open in 2015. Jordan was one of many in the field who were completely taken aback by their experience of their first visit to Darwin.

INVITATION Cove Travel invites you to a TAUCK presentation and information event.

Even before wrapping up the tournament with a fine 13-under par total, ironically ahead of Darwin-born PGA Tour China star Max McCardle, the New South Welshman was singing Darwin’s praises after spending time in the city, visiting the impressive waterfront precincts, even attending his first Australian Football match on the Saturday night before the final round. “I’ve had an absolute ball up here this week,” Jordan said, “It’s my first time to Darwin and it’s definitely going to hold a special place in my memory bank, that’s for sure.” Other players spoke of how much they had also enjoyed soaking up Darwin’s sights and sounds, including the historic WWII sites, the iconic Mindil Beach Markets and the great food and nightlife along Mitchell Street or at Skycity casino. Darwin’s sunsets over the water, transforming the skies to staggering shades of ochre and plum red, are world famous and, as expected, left an indelible impression. Those invited to the tournament dinner on Saturday night were fortunate to be exposed to another aspect of Darwin’s unique coastal setting and staggering beauty. >>

Crocosaurus Cove

The dinner was held aboard a barge, courtesy of one of the tournament sponsors – Barge Express – and the experience of cruising Darwin Harbour at sunset, with other vessels adding to the atmosphere on the water, was something the 150 guests will never forget. The sunset hues and the lights of the city provided a spectacular backdrop matched only by the company of a proud and excited

group of revellers from Darwin’s corporate and sporting community. Darwin product, now Singapore resident, Unho Park would have revelled in those sentiments as he enjoyed a rare opportunity to play an event back in his native Australia at the NT PGA. The Asian Tour veteran took advantage of the opportunity to come home to play in front of family and friends and, despite missing the cut,

his parting comments provided a window into some of the absorbing activities at your disposal when planning a pilgrimage to the extraordinary Northern Territory. "I plan to stick around after the tournament and kick back. Do some fishing, go crabbing, watch the drag racing and see some crocs," Unho said, "There are a number of things you can do in Darwin that you just can't do in Asia."

Spicers Peak Lodge Relaxation at the height of luxury. FROM THE MOMENT you emerge onto the winding driveway surrounded by the lush green grass that covers the plateau, it’s easy to tell there is something special about Spicers Peak Lodge. This is not just a room to stay in, but a destination to be experienced. Stunningly situated in a mountaintop clearing in Queensland’s Scenic Rim, Spicers Peak Lodge is as far from the pressure of everyday life as it’s possible to be. It’s a place where time slows down, where the vistas seem to go on forever, and the stresses of the everyday are forgotten the moment you step foot here. Being situated over 1100 metres above sea level means that the temperature at Spicers Peak Lodge rarely gets above the mid to high twenties, even in summer. Over winter the temperature can dip below freezing, making it perfect for cosy getaways by the fire. With elegant suites in the main lodge or secluded private lodges surrounded by bush, Spicers Peak Lodge offers guests a chance to truly relax and reconnect in a setting that is like no other. Chefs at the renowned onsite restaurant The Peak create menus inspired by fresh, local produce, matching them with both regional and international wines, ensuring this all-inclusive experience is one for the most discerning diner. For guests who desire to experience all the outdoors has to offer there is a host of invigorating activities. Guided and unguided bush walks offer the chance to encounter local wildlife from wallabies to glossy black cockatoos.

Mountain bike tours through the eucalypt forests, home to the resident brumbies, are available for more active guests, while a sunset four wheel drive tour complete with Champagne is the perfect way to end the day as you watch the spectacular sunsets over the Scenic Rim. With specially designed single and double treatment rooms, a plunge spa pool on the deck and relaxation lounge with open stone fireplace, Spa Anise Day Spa is the ideal way to unwind after exploring the natural beauty of the outdoors. Alternatively, you can take your time doing as little as possible by the pool, in the lounge, or your spacious suite. At Spicers Peak Lodge relaxation and revitalisation come naturally.

AT THE WHEEL

Looks good The new Lexus LC coupe combines stunning design and state-of-the-art technology.

WORDS CHRIS NIXON

CONGRATULATIONS, you have come to a point in your life when you have done well and it’s time to reward yourself with a nice car. There’s never been a better choice if you want something with a prestigious badge on the nose. But wise buying involves more than a famous name and notoriety. While money gets you style, comfort, performance, technology, exclusivity and a level of after-sales customer service most drivers could only imagine, value is another thing altogether. It’s now 27 years since Toyota launched a new sub-brand called Lexus and turned the prestige car world on its hubcaps with the big LS400 sedan. The LS400 set benchmarks in virtually every aspect of luxury motoring, from quality, comfort and refinement to value for money and, especially, customer service. As long as you didn’t mind the badge. A quarter of a century later, Lexus sales and the make’s reputation have never been stronger

78

yet they still have not turned the heads of German traditionalists. But this might be about to change with the Lexus LC, a striking-looking coupe that suggests future drivers are more likely to wear a helmet than a homburg. For sure, it’s a braverlooking car than anything in an Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz showroom. Lexus has been striving to change its conservative image of late, led by Akio Toyoda, a descendant of the Toyota founding family and whose influence has also included the creation of the hugely successful Toyota 86 sports car. A keen driver, Toyoda believes giving his company’s products a keener edge in dynamics and design will boost their popularity with younger owners. The LC was unveiled late last year in Europe and is expected in Australia toward the middle of 2017. Evidence Lexus is taking its new image seriously, the production LC closely follows the

design of a preview concept example displayed early in 2016. This is a rare thing; manufacturers don’t often have the courage to put their daring concept designs into production without toning them down. The LC’s design and technology are stunning. It’s a 2+2-seater hand-finished inside and outside by a team of craftsmen in a dedicated factory. And when you’re part of the biggest car company, you have access to the best technology, so the LC comes with the world’s first 10-gear, double-clutch, for ultimate efficiency. For engines, buyers can choose either hot or hybrid. Hot is a 5.0 litre, 351 kiloWatt V8, interestingly one of the last V8s in a high-end car that does not concede to environmental pressures by employing a turbocharger. It will accelerate like a tiger sprung from a trap – and sound like one. The 500h (hybrid) is a V6, but promises to give little away in performance to its V8 sibling. Lexus was a pioneer of electric+petrol hybrid engines

in luxury cars and unsurprisingly has earned a high level of trust among buyers. Only one model in the Lexus range, its biggest SUV, is not available with clean and economical hybrid power. Technology takes a step further in the LC, with nickel-metal hydride batteries being replaced by lighter and more efficient lithium-ion types for the auxiliary electric motor. Lithium-ion batteries – the same type now used in all portable power tools – can be shaped to better utilise confined spaces and improve weight distribution. Expect the finish quality of the Lexus LC 500 and 500h to be flawless, as it always has been in the make’s most expensive models. And, as a recent JD Power customer survey found, after-sales service is likely to be the best of any luxury brand. If you’re after a personal coupe with striking looks and stunning technology, this Lexus could be your first. (Or, if you want to stick with four doors, look out for a new LS flagship around the same time as the LC.) Est. 1995

Top 5 The seventh-generation BMW 5 Series continues to set the benchmark in luxury.

WORDS CHRIS NIXON

FOR BMW – and many of its customers – there is perhaps no model more central to its personality than the 5 Series. It’s the quintessential executive sedan and has been in continuous production since 1972, longer than any other BMW model. The mid-size 5 Series has helped set the benchmarks on what to expect in performance, roadholding, safety, comfort and advanced technology in a mid-size luxury car. And from those benchmarks follows what eventually goes into virtually every other BMW except the ultra-tech, ultra-luxury 7 Series flagship. So the seventh-generation 5 Series, officially launched overseas in January and due to land in Australian showrooms in March, will be a headline-grabbing car at the leading edge of automotive design. Semi-autonomous driving will be on the feature menu as will be gesture controls – a step beyond

80

mere touch-control – for phone and infotainment systems and remotely-controlled self-parking. Radar cruise control will take over stop-go driving in traffic jams and there will be ‘active lane-keeping’ assistance. The importer has already announced the initial Australian range – 520d, $93,900 (2.0 litre diesel, 140 kW) 530i, $108,900 (2.0 lite petol, 185 kW) 530d, $119,900 (3.0 litre diesel, 195 kW) 540i, $136,900 (3.0 petrol, 250 kW) Luxury Line and M Sport option packages will be available across the range. Given the extent of the current 5 Series range, it’s certain plenty more variants will follow though 2017 and into next year. Among the first should be the 530e iPer formance, a petrol-electric hybrid that promises a typically rewarding BMW driving experience.

Could ‘Rent-Investing’ be a strategy for you? PROPERTY MARKET UPDATE WRITTEN BY ANGELA TRZ’AN CEO Master Wealth Coach

WITH HOUSING PRICES on the rise, an increasing number of first home buyers have come to the realisation that they may not be able to afford to buy in their desired location. But should this stop them from purchasing a home altogether? Rent-investing has become an ever increasing strategy to get into the property market sooner, with many buyers purchasing an investment property while continuing to rent where they prefer to live or while still living at home. So how does it work? Let’s assume your mortgage broker calculated your borrowing capacity at $350,000. However, you can’t seem to find anything suitable within

your preferred location under $450,000 and you will also need a larger deposit. Does that mean you should wait until you can borrow more while property prices continue to increase? Not necessarily. In recent times, a client of ours decided to purchase her first home as an investment property within North Brisbane for $306,000. The property now rents for $350 per week which covers most of the expenses. With the rental income covering her loan repayments, she is able to travel and build wealth while still living at home. Purchasing an investment property first could potentially give you access to a wider range of options since you won’t be limited to buying within your ideal area. You’re buying solely for the affordability and value of the investment property which will grow in value.

Better yet, you will also be able to take advantage of great tax benefits as a property investor. While tenants pay for your investment loan, you can continue to save. Many who are considering a rent-invest strategy have also asked us if they can receive the first home owners grant when purchasing an investment property. In order to receive the first home owners grant, buyers do need to live in the home for a period of time first. However, you can then rent the property out to tenants after the required period if you choose to do so. Rent-investing is something many are considering, however, it may not suit everyone. The best thing to do is to educate yourself and consider the options available to you with the help of an expert.

Awarded by the Australian Institute of Architects Best Residential Architecture both nationally and for Queensland, as well as the Robin Dodds Award for Best Residential Architecture for Queensland and House of the Year, ‘Solis’ was completed in 2010. The award-winning design exquisitely intertwines the home with the surrounding Coral Sea, with a series of reflection ponds and swimming pools that combine to create a sense of flowing tranquility and sensuous tactility to the property. On a practical level, the home provides casual, elegant indoor/outdoor living that is in perfect harmony with the natural beauty and serenity of the surrounds. Artistically crafted from concrete, stone and glass, ‘Solis’ is a spacious, freeflowing home that is a brilliant and contemporary interpretation of idyllic coastal living.

84

With access to three swimming pools, ponds, courtyards and terraces available from every living space of the home, ‘Solis’ provides a sense of connectivity to its stunning natural surroundings. “It feels like ‘Solis’ is floating,” says listing agent, Carol Carter from Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty. “The way this home flows is extraordinary, the interiors feel like a natural extension of the home’s surroundings. “The main pool encompasses almost the entire ground level, evoking a sense that the home itself extends across to the Coral Sea. “The second pool is separate to the home itself, forming part of the outdoor barbeque and entertaining area looking over the sea from the lower level. This area creates a separate idyllic garden setting to relax in, or host impressive entertaining from. “The third is a stunning indoor/outdoor plunge pool again boasting views across the sea from the home’s lower level, a place to relax and enjoy the one in a million view of this remarkable home,” said Carol. The open-plan living spaces of ‘Solis’ are all designed to effortlessly extend out to the terraces, with every level and vantage point providing enormous surprise and delight. The home features a light-filled, full Boffi Kitchen, and the rest of the house includes high quality European fittings and fixtures throughout.

With three generously sized bedroom suites, each with dramatic ocean views, the design of the accommodation would work equally for an extended family, or as impressive guest quarters. The functional living spaces, including the sleek, contemporary bathrooms, have been designed to eliminate any superfluous detail, imbuing the living spaces with a sense of uncluttered elegance. According to the architect, Renato D’Ettorre, ’Solis’ on Hamilton Island draws inspiration from its magnificent location, with the design seeking to balance the human spirit with nature. “Remaining connected to these surroundings was one of the key elements driving the design of the house,” he says. “This is done by reconnecting with nature through the simple act of observing the wonders of its ever-changing scenery and by harnessing its benefits including the off-shore cool sea breezes, the warm evenings, spectacular sunsets and the lush vegetation and beauty of tropical rainfalls.”

Waterfront luxury Paradise Waters – the Gold Coast’s premium address.

THIS SPECTACULAR contemporary home in Paradise Waters is perfectly positioned on the point of prestigious Midshipman Court. The property commands superb sweeping deep water views of the main river, across to the playing fields of The Southport School. Paradise Waters has long been acknowledged as one of the most coveted addresses on the Gold Coast. This riverfront property is the best of the best, with its perfect Northerly aspect and a serviced pontoon for deep-water boat mooring, fishing and, of course, swimming. Centrally located within this contemporary home is a dramatic three-storey void that bathes the interior in an abundance of natural light, while creating a sense of spacious elegance. The stunning entrance with its tall pivot door allows access to the foyer and executive study, with views out to the courtyard garden. Adjacent to this space is a large home cinema with tiered seating, an integrated wine fridge and an impressive sound system. The kitchen and casual living are embraced by wide travertine terraces that meander around the house, overlooking the crystal clear water as it washes onto the private, sandy beach. All of the four bedrooms on the second level enjoy water and city skyline views plus each has an adjoining bathroom. The master suite located on the upper level has been designed as a private luxury retreat with a glamorous dressing room and vogue ensuite

86

complete with marble finishes and a stylish French bath. The master suite opens out to a spacious balcony with panoramic views stretching across the broadwaters and The Southport School to the mountains in the west. For ease of movement throughout the home there is a central elevator running between all floors. According to Sotheby’s Queensland agent Kim Sharpe, this is one of the most desirable properties on the Gold Coast market. “With its position, views and quality design, it really does tick all the boxes for those looking for a quality, high-end home with room to move as the family grows,” says Kim. “The second level provides space for all the kids with bedrooms, bathrooms, storage and reading areas,” she adds. “Plus, there’s a top floor with its design providing an ideal haven for parents, with all the entertainment and living space a family could possibly wish for located on the ground floor.” Owners Anthony and Linda Maunder enjoy an idyllic family lifestyle from their Midshipman home, pointing out that while they can see the river from virtually every room in the house, there is little to no noise from the wash or from the boats sailing past. “As our pool faces north-west, the kids, including our neighbours’ children, would all be in our pool till late,” says Anthony. “We have a white sandy beach where they also love to swim

as the water here is crystal clear. Then, once they are dried off, they’re into the cinema with popcorn to watch a movie. “We can easily fish from our back deck, there’s no need to even walk to the jetty. In the summer months we spend most of our time in the openplan living area, as it is close to the pool and we can open all the doors to get the cross breezes and sit right next to the water.” And it’s not just the summer months that this exclusive Paradise Waters property is wonderfully livable. “In the winter months we like to use the back lounge room as it captures the winter sun all afternoon and is lovely and warm,” Anthony adds. “We also change our dining rooms around to the other side as it is next to the fireplace.” This property is just a few minutes to the famous Gold Coast beaches, plus all the local cafés, restaurants and shopping precints. “It really is an ideal location,” explains Anthony. “We are on the waterfront with amazing views, but it’s incredibly quiet and peaceful, and still so close to everything.”

Great estate Contemporary comfort meets historic style in Byron Bay. IDEALLY LOCATED, Carvan Estate is perfectly situated on Coolomon Scenic Drive, one of the most enviable addresses in the Byron Shire. Less than five minutes from the charming hinterland village of Bangalow and ten minutes to the beaches of Byron Bay, the magnificent 50-acre estate is idyllic in position, ambience and attributes. The long drive into Carvan Estate creates a sense of arrival and an ambience of both peace and privacy as the award-winning home is set at the far end of the drive, to the rear of the property. With views to Cape Byron Lighthouse and the Pacific Ocean, the magnificent seven-year-old home combines the highest quality build with a host of contemporary comforts, while its essence and design captures the grandeur and charm of a bygone era. Owners Chris and Yasmin Gavaghan are both medicos, and both share a deep love of history and the land. An emergency doctor who works locally, Chris spends much of his spare time regenerating the land at Carvan Estate. “We removed all the rocks and have planted a variety of 2,000 native trees,” says Chris. “As a result we have brought this beautiful parcel of land back to its natural state, plus we have built a home worthy of this property.”

88

Yasmin also loves this rich countryside and has a deep appreciation and knowledge for the grandeur and quality of beautifully built, Australian historical country homes. “We chose award-winning master-builder John Henderson to build the home six years ago,” explains Yasmin. “We wanted a family home with all the amenities of the 21st Century, yet infused with all the charms of a 19th century grand country residence. “People always comment on the quality of the build,” adds Yasmin. “The details such as the height of the ceilings, the depth of the skirting boards and the wide, wrap-around verandahs, stand out as you rarely see those high quality features in homes now. “It was important for us to re-create that sense of grandeur and easy country living with this home. It has the charms of a historical country home, yet it has all the contemporary comforts that we expect today.” With five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a media room and cellar and internal double garage, plus a magnificent, upper level space with expansive district views across to the ocean, this home perfectly combines the charms of a bygone era with today’s conveniences.

Agent, Janis Perkins from Real Estate of Distinction describes Carvan Estate as simply perfect. “One of the first impressions as you enter this property is one of peace, privacy and country living on an impressive scale,” she says. “The home, with high, vaulted ceilings and generous proportions for all the living rooms is grand both in proportions and the superior quality of the build. “It also has an idyllic location. There are 50 acres of lush, regenerated land and plenty of natural water, plus an extraordinary home with ocean views. This property really does have everything.” To complete the idyllic country estate, there is an artificial lake created from the natural springs that is ideal for swimming and fishing, or as a picturesque picnic spot.

SPORT REPORT

And they’re racing … The start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race is one of the most watched media events in the world. However, the hype and excitement is even better when you witness it first hand.

WORDS MATTHEW MORGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BETH MORLEY

IT IS 26 DECEMBER 2016. A fleet of boats assemble to compete in the 71st Sydney to Hobart yacht race. The official Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race website lists a range of 88 boats to start. Unexpected things tend to happen in this open ocean event which regularly develops into a test of human will and engineering. The race's popularity, as a rite of passage for young men and women, beckons the brave and unsuspecting. Those who become regular crew in subsequent years, admit it is the exhilaration, adrenalin and fraternity that makes ‘The Hobart’ an unforgettable experience. The race is also a testament to an irrepressible desire for yachties to compete against their equals; to rate themselves and their boat while pushing their own limits.

90

The 630 nautical mile (1170 km) course takes them up Sydney Harbour, down the eastern seaboard, across Bass Strait, past Storm Bay and up the Derwent River to Constitution Dock in Hobart, Tasmania. Strong southerlies often make the journey gruelling, dangerous and newsworthy. The changeable weather patterns can be a meteorological maze for the strategists on board. Some years are unforgettable for the ocean's malevolence, delivering only fatigue and discomfort, or frustrating for lack of wind. This year the forecast is looking good. The super maxis (~100ft), maxis (75 - 82ft) and so called Volvo Open 70s dominate the skyline today. The Volvo Open 70s are a (former) class of racing yacht designed for around the world

races and include Giacomo, Maserati, CQS and Black Jack. The ‘super maxis’ and ‘maxis’ feature well known names … Wild Oats XI, Perpetual Loyal, Scallywag, Beau Geste. In all, there are around 500 crew dispersed among the fleet. Intense group rivalries underlie the competition where comparable boats face off, creating races within the race. The various classes of boats will have eyes on each other as they tack their way up the harbour, looking for tactical advantages in order to capture the psychological prize of being 'first through the heads' or if winds are favourable 'first to hoist the chute'. Start day for the Sydney to Hobart yacht race is one of the most intensely covered media events in the world.

The sponsors: watch makers, insurance companies, communications services, luxury cars, fine wine, media networks, Queensland resorts and gambling empires, all have their livery festooned on sails and fluttering pennants. Coverage of the start day rivals the Melbourne Cup. Unlike the horses, this race is not over in three and a half minutes. For logistical and commercial reasons, on most networks, only the first 60 minutes is covered thoroughly. It tends to be the most exciting, accident-prone and photogenic leg of the entire race. For those not competing, the day seems festive as crowds mill and weave their way along the narrow jetties admiring the fleet. For yachties this occasion is a fusion of design, tradition, innovation and material science; finer details not necessarily noticed by the visitors who see a marvellous array of majestic craft. >>

We are the home of Gold Coast’s Zodiac Boats

The race begins at 1.00pm, but it’s a much earlier start for the sailors and support crew. Preparation and planning are meticulous and there are a myriad of things to do before the docking lines are cast off at Rushcutters Bay. Much depends on Mother Nature so this includes the formulation of strategies based on the final morning’s weather briefing from the Bureau of Meteorology ... ‘strengthening northerly winds before a southerly change moves through Bass Strait and up the coast tonight’. It is not the preferred wind but it will do. Everyone’s happy.

As the teams prepare, last minute advice is given and goodbyes exchanged. Without ceremony, the Rolex flags adorning the forestays of the gently swaying boats are taken down. There is an air of excitement as the boats motor out to the exclusion zone where the sails are hoisted and billow gently with a steady nor'easter. Within the crews, it’s a very different mood. For them to succeed they need to place their festivities on hold until they reach Constitution Dock. While the sailboats warm up with diagonal tacks across the harbour, charter and media boats

form a gauntlet for the competitors. Private craft gather outside the exclusion zone and loll under the weight of boisterous passengers and ice filled eskies. Tinnies bob and roll with the increasing intensity of the harbour waves. At 1.00pm the gun sounds and the close quartered jousting and weaving switches immediately to racing mode as the fleet begins its manoeuvres around the course buoys as they head towards the Tasman Sea. Wild Oats XI gets a bad start and its arch rival Perpetual Loyal, takes the lead.

In predictable fashion, the super maxis lead the field as they round Sydney Heads. The Volvo 70s are next, followed by the rest of the fleet, already arranged in order of speed with the smaller boats plowing courageously into the unsheltered waters of the Tasman Sea. The media boats follow the fleet out into the choppy waves beyond the heads but after about 80 minutes finally farewell the last boat as the graceful sails of the super maxis are already tilting silhouettes on the horizon.

The first 24 hours turned out to be a dream run for super maxis and Volvo 70s. Sadly Wild Oats XI retired due to equipment failure, but the strong southerly winds ensured that the fastest three boats to finish all broke the previous record; Perpetual Loyal in a record time of 37 hours and 31 minutes, Giacomo two hours later and then Scallywag, two minutes after that. Amazingly on the morning of the third day, the race came to a stand still as winds around Tasmania dropped away to gentle zephyrs and

then to nothing on the Derwent River as a slight drizzle enveloped the fleet. The last boat to reach Constitution Dock arrived after 99 hours of sailing. It was, once again, a race to remember packed with surprises. Fortunately, for the crews and their families, everyone arrived safely ‌ ready to do it all again in 2017.

ART DEPARTMENT

Lenscapes Russ McLean has a passion for both the landscapes he photographs and the craft itself.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM

HIS IMAGES are breathtaking, his subject matter equally so, but for Russ McLean photography is about much more than just creating a picture on a page. “Capturing and communicating the beauty around me has developed as my ‘later in life’ obsession,” Russ explains. “My family gifted me a camera for my 60th birthday, ostensibly to keep me occupied after an interesting and involved business life. Now I make images of the landscape simply to honour a talent I was totally unaware of for the first six decades of my life.”

94

Born in Dunedin, Russ’s commercial interests in business equipment and IT marketing saw him live in many of New Zealand’s provincial areas at various times. He now resides near Queenstown with his wife, spending much of his time behind a lens. “My journey in photography started in 2007 and since then I have peeled away the layers to find the real me, not the person others have expected me to be,” Russ admits. “I identify with the words – ‘the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything – it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t you.’ (Anon).”

While much of Russ’s work is landscape based, his intention is to capture a moment rather than simply document his physical surroundings. “I do not attempt to produce visual records – i.e. ‘I was there and saw this’. Rather, I attempt to communicate ‘I was in this place and saw it like this’,” he says. “This approach is more ‘impressionistic’ than ‘representational’ as it asks viewers to look at everyday subjects in a way that they possibly have never done before. “Hopefully, it will also evoke an emotional response, as for an image to really succeed it

needs to evoke something – awe, wonder or any one of a thousand different responses.” According to Russ, he has learnt many valuable lessons since taking up his craft. “Landscape photography has taught me to be patient, to reflect, to ‘listen’ to the environment, to become conscious of what compels my camera,” he says. “I’ve learned to strip the unnecessary and the irrelevant out of the frame and to simplify. I’ve learned that the really special moments can be fleeting and to be prepared for them. I’ve learned that emotion is desirable, not something to be ashamed of. >>

So what is the secret to getting the one shot that captures the viewer both visually and emotionally? “Arguably, there is little that is truly new in photography – every location has been shot before, sometimes to the point of ‘digital poisoning’. But when done from the heart, photography can evoke emotions and record memories. “I shoot only that which inspires me and in so doing I create something new – it’s new simply because it’s ME. Indifference is my enemy – but I’ve learned to live with that as well.”

Taking up photography later in life has also opened up a world of new opportunities. “I have met wonderful people and visited special places. I have shared thoughts and experiences with people I respect. “I am very grateful for all that has come my way. Now I welcome the opportunity to share with you that which is essentially me.”

COVER STORY

WORDS KATHRYN EDMONDS PHOTOGRAPHY ALEX HUANG

AS SOON as he could walk, Alex Huang felt the compulsion to voyage, explore and discover as much of this planet as he could. While many of us enjoy the once-a-year holiday, Alex has taken in the sights, smells and sounds of over 20 countries – and that is in just the past three years. What fuels this travel photographer’s untiring wanderlust? It’s having the texture of earth he’s never felt before underfoot. It’s the unknowing subject in a foreign land, captured in one forgotten moment that forever changes Alex’s view of humanity.

98

It’s the simple thrill of hitting the road – destination unknown but camera in hand. This adventure-hungry heart housed inside a person with a voracious creative appetite has resulted in a portfolio that seamlessly connects storytelling with photography and emotions with experiences. “Travelling is a big part of my life and it is so important to me as it has developed my ability to view the world in all its vast and contrasting beauty,” Alex says. “It has taught me how to capture moments that can often unfold quickly and it’s allowed me to develop a spontaneous and authentic approach to my work.

Over the years, Alex has built a renowned and well respected name for himself within the travel photography industry and has a slew of accredited awards under his belt. Most recently he has received a Gold Award from the 2016 and 2015 APPA/AIPP (Australian Professional Photography Awards), QLD Travel Photographer of the Year, and he was placed as a finalist at the 2016 AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photographers) Australian Travel Photographer of the Year. The shot on the cover of this edition was taken in Santorini, Greece and epitomises Alex’s duel passion for his work and his travels.

The iconic Opera at Jimbour returns on 22 July as part of Queensland Music Festival, and is expected to draw thousands of loyal audience members, armed with picnics, to enjoy beautiful music al fresco in the magnificent Darling Downs. This year, a new semi-staged version of Franz Lehár’s operetta The Merry Widow will star David Hobson as Count Danilo and Emily Burke as Hannah Glawari. Audience members will be able to participate in a pre-show rehearsal and then join in the ‘Vilia’ chorus for the concert. From 5 to 12 August, OperaQ joins forces with Expressions Dance Company (EDC) in QPAC’s Cremorne Theatre for Mozart Airborne. Celebrating the beauty and complexity of the composer’s most sublime arias and ensembles, the premiere production will feature OperaQ artists and virtuosic pianist Alex Raineri onstage with EDC dancers performing new works by some of Australia’s most exciting contemporary choreographers, all under the guidance of EDC’s Natalie Weir and OperaQ’s Lindy Hume. OperaQ has just retired its hugely successful school hit FIZZ!, based on The Elixir of Love, which was seen by more than 23,000 children over a three-year run.

Not resting on its laurels, the company is again partnering with shake & stir theatre co to produce a brand new production of Hansel & Gretel, based on the opera by Engelbert Humperdinck. This classic story celebrates the resourcefulness of the siblings Hansel and Gretel when they find themselves lost in the forest. It is showing for a school holiday season from 27 to 30 September at the OperaQ studio during a 10-week tour to primary schools across the state. The mighty Opera Queensland chorus will raise the roof in the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, OperaQ and QPAC presentation of Carmen in Concert. Taking place in QPAC’s Concert Hall on 25 November, the production will feature Australian debuts from internationally acclaimed stars Vesselina Kasarova and Andrea Caré. Due to increased demand for tickets, OperaQ’s annual Gala will move to the larger spaces of the Sofitel Brisbane in 2017. Themed Opera Exotica this year, the popular event will be held on 28 October. OperaQ will also continue to reach out to the community via its successful Open Stage program, with multiple workshops for adults, teenagers and school groups on offer. This unique program gives people of all ages and interests the chance to learn performance skills and build confidence in their abilities by engaging with OperaQ’s teams of artists. The innovative Sing Story is a free program where primary school students deconstruct well-known operas before writing and performing their own work. PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

Developments could be ideal, especially if you're realistic and build your plans on strong foundations. You'll build character and it's a great time to consolidate ventures and finances in preparation for your next step. The solar eclipse on February 27 will kick-start a fresh phase in your personal life or at work. Singles could meet someone new, so aim for a fresh start.

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

The lunar eclipse on February 11 suggests a development in your personal life is on the way and, for mid-August Leos, a change at work or in your daily routine. February could be empowering, especially if you're willing to make necessary changes concerning relationships or work. The new moon on March 28 will promote a new approach to sharing duties and collaborations.

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

Even while you forge ahead in February, you may need to go over old ground to clear the way for travel, a life decision or for a collaboration, business or personal. The solar eclipse on February 27 will spotlight an inspiring venture or a new work schedule. The Aries new moon end of March will be excellent for kick-starting new projects and for romance.

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

February’s eclipses will highlight developments at home, in your career and status and you may reconsider how to move forward by trying out new ideas. You’ll feel re-energised from March 10 onwards and you’ll experience a deeper sense of stability or belonging as the month progresses. Rely on your resourcefulness while presenting a spontaneous and inspired profile.

A new approach to travel, relationships and communications will ignite your willingness to dream a little while putting careful plans in place. Venus and Mars will promote a strong work ethic, and you’ll feel stimulated by your improved circumstances. The new moon on March 28 may also point to new work opportunities and the chance to boost your status.

crossword No. 2515

112

February’s eclipses will stimulate developments in areas of your life you share, such as shared duties, finances and commitments. New ways to distribute wealth, make investments or share responsibilities will appeal. An opportunity to spread your wings could arise in March, and fresh projects have every chance of success if you combine ingenuity with a solid plan.

Events in February will help stimulate a fresh phase in your personal or work life that may include a return to an old haunt, a reunion or the chance to finally move on from the past. You’ll then turn a corner at the end of February and early March. Allow yourself to dream a little and follow your instincts. Singles could meet someone new; keep an eye out!

A slightly retrospective aspect may feel frustrating as projects or plans may be put on hold, or will seem to slow down or lose momentum. View this phase as a period of consolidation rather than as boring or annoying. Work demands and a change of routine will produce a new schedule, which will take some adjustment, and should keep you busy and upbeat in your daily life.

sudoku Hard

Developments in February with family, your home life and interests will ask that you’re methodical in your planning, and also inspired and philosophical – quite a mix! The lunar eclipse on February 11 could usher in a change in your career or status that will affect your home life. A fresh approach to your long-term goals will keep you feeling stimulated and engaged.

The following two months could represent a breakthrough, including a key change at home or with a long-term or big-picture plan. For some, February and March will be all about fulfilling a goal. Whether this will involve kick-starting your career, or taking the plunge and travelling or studying, you will feel by April that you’ve covered a lot of ground.

It’s time to try something new and for you, this is most likely to occur through travel, a financial option or shared endeavours. Circumstances may also involve a development at home or regarding property. You may be ready for a move, a new project, study or to re-think travel plans by March, as the full moon on the 13th will spotlight how you truly feel about these key areas.

February and March are ideal for letting go of aspects of your life that no longer resonate with you, and for embracing an exciting option that agrees with your values and beliefs. The lunar eclipse on February 11 foreshadows the chance to reinvent your relationships, both business and personal, and for mid-February Aquarians, to improve your daily schedule or work options.
