A special milestone calls for a special celebration so this issue is shining with diamonds, glistening with gold and shimmering with stars.

Editor’s letter WELCOME to the 60th edition of the magazine, which also happens to coincide with our 10th year of publication. A special milestone calls for a special celebration so this issue is shining with diamonds, glistening with gold and shimmering with stars. We have also taken luxury to the extreme, opening the doors to several multi-million dollar homes; test driving not one, but six, super fast supercars; and showcasing 16 pages of high-end boating in the lead up to the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Rumour has it that British singer/songwriter Adele also made Sanctuary Cove her home during the Brisbane leg of her recent Australian tour so it seems fitting that she is the subject of our feature interview. I was lucky enough to see this awardwinning artist in concert and like many others I was not only in awe of her amazing voice, but also charmed by her down to earth personality. What a superstar. Speaking of stars, Jupiters Gold Coast has been part of the local landscape for over 30 years. Now, this cultural icon is not just undergoing a master-plan makeover, it is also getting a name change and will be known as The Star Gold Coast. You can read more in the Iconic Brand section.

Another cultural precinct that is being transformed is The Arts Centre Gold Coast. We speak to newly appointed CEO/Director, Criena Gehrke, about her role and the long term plan for the region’s arts and culture community in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games and beyond. We have also increased the luxe-level on our regular food, fashion and travel sections with Tony taste-testing the Michelin-starred flavours of Hong Kong, Madison heading to Canberra to check out the gold-plated Versailles: Treasures from the Palace exhibition and Laura styling an elegant Autumn fashion spread which was shot in The Marine Village Sanctuary Cove. Last, but definitely not least, our fabulous new competition pays homage to our Diamond Anniversary, offering you the chance to win a stunning pair of Hardy Brothers diamond earrings valued at an impressive $10,999. Time to celebrate … enjoy.

You’ve become the first artist in history to sweep the top three awards – record, song and album of the year twice? What does it mean to you to accomplish that? Well the Grammys mean a lot to me obviously, it’s kind of ‘the’ award show. Like I said in my speech, for me, my album of the year was ‘Lemonade’, so as a Beyoncé stan [super fan] a piece of me did die inside. I’m not going to lie because I was completely rooting for her. I voted for her. But I’m incredibly humbled, especially being from the UK. It is an amazing feat to have achieved. America has always been very, very kind to me and I don’t even know why to be honest. I don’t get it. But no, I feel amazing about it, of course, and it’s an amazing thing to show my son. I’m raising him to respect women and he knows I’m a powerful force, he feels it just at home, let alone when he comes to work with me and he comes everywhere.

specifically and I fell in love immediately with her. That was when I was 11 and I’m 28 now. And the way that I felt when I first heard ‘No No No’ was exactly the same as how I felt when I heard ‘Lemonade’ last year. The other people that make me feel like that, they’re all dead, so I am living off music that they made when they were alive. Whereas for her to be making such relevant music for that long of a period and still affect all of us, it’s not just me.

What you said to Beyoncé was so beautiful and such a tender moment. Can you talk a little bit about why you felt the need to say it and also did you guys get a chance to speak? We did speak yeah. I spoke to her before just to let her know how honoured and privileged I feel to be nominated alongside her. And we spoke afterwards as well and she was very gracious and humble as always, as you would expect from her. The reason I felt the need to say something was because she has been my icon for my whole life. I was 11 years old, I might get emotional actually, I was 11 years old and I was at school in year six, just before I moved up to our high school, and I was with some girlfriends and we were practising a song for an assembly with our friends and with all our family and stuff. Obviously it was probably my recommendation that we do a Spice Girls song and they were like, ‘Have you heard ‘No No No’?’ And I was like, ‘No, no, no I haven’t’. [laughs] And they played it to me. I literally remember so clearly how I felt hearing her voice, hearing all their voices, but hearing her

You paid tribute to George Michael tonight. What were some of your early memories of him? I’ve been working really hard on this tribute for a month, literally every day. I did it with Hans Zimmer and I was in his studio even when he couldn’t see me, just sitting there waiting for him to give me some time, which he did very graciously. My earliest memory of [George] was ‘Fast Love’. It was when the video came out for that and I was blown away by how hot he was. It’s actually quite exceptional how good looking he was. And I was young, I was about ten. I heard the vulnerability in that song, especially in the middle eight where it goes from being about one night stands and being a little bit sleazy to saying, ‘In the absence of security, I made my way into the night’ and ‘I lost my way’ basically. And I recognised that, I didn’t relate to it when I was ten because that would be weird, but that song, I was very, very adamant. I was devastated on Christmas Day [the day George Michael died], I had to go for a walk on my own and just breathe for a while. And on

There are friendships that I have that are completely defined by us being complete Beyoncé stans, you know, so I felt the need to do it and also I feel like it was her time to win. This album, I said it earlier, is another side to her we haven’t seen. Obviously the visual is very new and the Grammys are very traditional but I just thought this year would be the year that they would go with the tide. I am, of course, very, very grateful having won it but I felt like she was more than worthy and that’s pretty much it really.

Boxing Day, I said to Simon, my partner, I have to do that tribute. They didn’t want a tribute at first, his family and camp, but they came back and were very specific that it be me and I was like, ‘Great, I’ve got something in the pipeline, if you want me to do it, I’ll do it’. I’ve found him to be one of the truest icons because, a lot of time with people that are globally known and famous, there tends to be, not a fakeness in a bad way, but they put on this massive bravado, this alter ego to protect themselves, and rightly so. I completely understand and appreciate that. But, for him, it didn’t always seem to be solely based on a look or about an assumption. And also he was very British, no matter where his career or his love life took him, he always remained true to Britain. The British press really gave him a hard time and he still stayed loyal to the very end. And no matter how much I try and escape Britain sometimes, my roots are there so I relate to that.

Your records are not over-produced, they’re almost like demos that sound amazing … They’re all demos. Nothing ever beats a demo, for any artist, in my opinion. Whenever I’ve heard the originals of their songs, there’s a passion and an urgency in demos which can never seem to be re-enacted, especially in my case.

How involved do you get in the way those records sound? I am a control freak. There’s a whole other version of ‘21’, which I have spoken about before. I sit there like a backstreet driver. I don’t know how to work a computer … I do have an Apple, it hasn’t been on for about a year … but I sit behind and go, ‘What’s that bit? Let’s do this bit?’ And I reference other records and sounds that I’ve heard from the past, or current hits. I like to think of myself as very involved. I definitely wrote a lot less of the latest record than I did of ‘21’, but that was because I had a bad drinking habit on ‘21’ so I couldn’t quite get the inspiration this time around. [laughs] >>

JANLOGAN.COM

What does it mean that the song ‘Hello’ has become like a worldwide anthem? It was hard work writing this album. You know, it was daunting following ‘21’ up. I felt the pressure writing ‘25’ – very, very much. And for a very long time during that process I didn’t really find my voice and I don’t know if I did find it, even towards the end. ‘Hello’ actually started when I was writing it with the lyric ‘Hello misery’ – so I’m sure you can imagine the mood that I was in [laughs] when I was writing that. But it developed and Greg Kurstin, who I wrote with, was like, ‘Hmm I’m not sure about that line, I don’t know about ‘Hello misery’ that’s a bit weird’ so he changed it to ‘Hello, it’s me’. [laughs] Of course, I was gone for so long, I had my baby and I raised him through the toddler years and then I sort of slowly edged my way back into work. And I didn’t think anyone would care. I thought no-one would know it was me – but thank God they did otherwise that would have been a really expensive disaster. But, of course, I’m always, always appreciative of all of the love that I’m shown. ‘Hello’ became a standard almost immediately, which is so rare, can you talk a bit more about how it emerged … Sure. Yeah so Greg [Kurstin] was playing some moody chords, that’s all that anyone ever plays for me, whenever we get in the studio, because that’s the kind of mood I’m in. It started out, like I said, the original line ‘Hello misery’ came out, so he pulled me up on that immediately. For subscriptions please call +61 5577 9499 He was like, ‘Maybe you should go meditate or something’. So I went and tried to be a bit Zen and then I came back. We wrote the first two verses really quickly actually, which tends to be the case in, to date, my biggest songs. But we had three different choruses for ‘Hello’. There was one that was a very country vibe, because I’m hugely inspired by country music. And then I was a bit concerned about the chorus that you all know because it obviously goes quite high and I didn’t know if I could replicate that. The tour was actually booked before I got pregnant so I knew I would have to hit that note every night and obviously it would be an opener once the verse was written and stuff because it says, ‘Hello’. So yeah, we changed it a few times and then we settled on that chorus. And ‘the other side’, it’s the other side of being a grown up, it’s the other side of my relationship with all my friends and my ex-boyfriends, it’s from death, my Granpy, my Grandfather, he’s a huge part of my life even though he’s been gone for 18 years. So it’s kind of the other side of not knowing, which, you know, I don’t know if I lost touch with a lot of my friends because of how famous I got or because you grow up. All of my friends tell me they lost touch with a lot of people as well, with the way that life changes, whether it’s my circumstance or a different one. But yeah, I’m glad you feel like that about that song, that it might be a bit of a standard.

PROFILE

Culture driven As CEO/Director of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, Criena Gehrke will oversee the development of the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct.

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY SARKA HILL

WITH A NAME to match her vibrant personality, Criena Gehrke is the newly appointed CEO/ Director of The Arts Centre Gold Coast. She is set to bring to life a vision of the Gold Coast’s cultural precinct, and our local arts culture couldn’t be in better hands. “What we currently have is a fantastic and much loved performing arts centre and gallery space in the hearts and minds of the community, but over the next 10 to 15 years, this centre will grow to become an artistic and cultural heartland of the Gold Coast,” Criena explains. “The whole vision for the Centre is around it being a civic and cultural precinct, and whilst there is no doubt that some of the programing and experiences that will come in the next few years will be built around the best local, national and international product, there is a deep commitment; not just from myself, but also the board, Mayor Tom Tate and the investment that’s happening from the Council to make it a place of community and very accessible for everyone.” Originally from Queensland, Criena made a move to Victoria several years ago when she was appointed Executive Director of Arts Access Victoria; one of Australia’s leading cultural development organisations. In 2008 she was the recipient of the prestigious Harvard Business Club Victoria Scholarship,

28

undertaking a week-long tour of North America to observe models of best practice in community cultural development and attending Harvard Business School to advance her skills and understanding of arts and cultural communities; especially underprivileged communities. “The fellowship was the most amazing week on campus at Harvard Business School with a range of American and International leaders of non-profit organisations, and part of that fellowship was to go and tour large institutions like the Met and the Guggenheim and work out what they were doing in the community engagement space,” she explains. “When you look at those institutions, they’re considered as substantial cultural establishments that hold amazing collections and have a certain reputation, but some of the work they do with communities, where they engage a whole range of people in art, is outstanding.” Criena stepped into her newly created role from her previous position as Executive Coordinator of Arts and Culture for the City of Gold Coast, where she was responsible for developing and implementing a ten-year vision for arts and culture development known as the Gold Coast Culture Strategy 2023. “The Mayor, the city and the elected representatives have committed to looking at

the Commonwealth Games opportunity as a moment of creating a legacy far beyond 2018. “Through my previous role with council we’ve worked on a lot of initiatives that support artists creating and developing work,” she says. That included taking five emerging organisations and backing some of their great artists and ideas, resulting in Shock Therapy Productions winning the Matilda awards in 2016, The Walls Art Space in Miami featuring in national and international publications, and The Farm; a professional dance company winning awards and touring internationally. She also supported individual artists with the help of The Arts Centre Gold Coast, to provide more opportunities within our cultural community. “There has been quite a strategic approach where organisations like the Bleach* Festival have been established as its own entity and have had an increase in investment, resulting in over 400 local artists being employed,” she says. For the past four years, Criena has passionately worked to help create and implement programs and initiatives for artists working and living in the region which focus on a four-key cultural strategy. “The first is based on who we are as a city, so not pretending to be anything that we are not but embracing what we already are,” Criena explains.

sher ee moko &

“Next it’s about the arts and cultural experiences that should be part of what we do every day and can be weaved into our daily lives, while the other pillar is around our cultural heritage and our city’s stories, specifically our indigenous arts, culture and community. “The final aspect is around creating opportunities and professional pathways for artists, making this city a place where artists can work, live and be proud to call home.” Her deep passion for the community and her love of artists, together with her diverse and articulate mindset and range of skills, are the reasons behind her new appointment. “I feel humbled and acutely aware of the opportunity and the responsibility that has been offered to me, and I feel extremely excited to follow my true passion and genuine belief in local artists and what the Gold Coast can be,” Criena says. “I believe that arts and culture is the thing that binds communities together, particularly in a contemporary society where we dream, we connect, we tell stories, we celebrate, we grieve and we explore interesting ideas. “Part of the DNA needs to be with our young so they grow up seeing arts, culture and story-telling and where they come together as a community, which is absolutely fundamental for our artistic and cultural future,” she says.

ICONIC BRANDS

Our rising Star The evolution continues as Jupiters Gold Coast transitions into The Star Gold Coast.

Concept image for illustration purposes only.

ONE OF THE CITY’S most iconic destinations continues to expand and evolve in front of our eyes, as The Star Gold Coast (formerly Jupiters Gold Coast) remains focused on investing in the creation of a world-class integrated resort.
Having cemented its place as a Gold Coast icon of more than 30 years, The Star welcomes over 10,000 people every day and has played a pivotal role in shaping the face of our City since the opening of the property in 1985.
Its initial transformation, currently underway, heralds a new era for the property and forms part of a crucial investment in the region ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Six new food and beverage offerings, 596 refurbished hotel rooms and a luxury poolside experience are among the newly-released features, with highly popular dining experiences Kiyomi, Cucina Vivo and Garden Kitchen & Bar already attracting a wealth of success. The Star Entertainment Group’s Managing Director Queensland Geoff Hogg credits the refurbishment of the existing facilities as a catalyst in providing the standards of product excellence, and guest services, that The Star brand represents.

“The Gold Coast’s reputation as a must-visit destination continues to strengthen with both leisure and business travellers, so we are working to create a broad offering that will help to support this well into the future,” he says. “As a group we’ve put significant investment into ensuring we provide a premium product which will in turn become a major driver in attracting vital economic benefits for the Gold Coast and Queensland tourism more generally.”
The Star’s revitalised dining experiences have served up a host of award-wins since the launch of the first of six new food and beverage offerings in late-2014. Opening under the guidance of Restaurant Executive Chef Chase Kojima, Kiyomi gained industry recognition just six months after opening, claiming its first Chef’s Hat at the 2016 Brisbane Times Good Food Guide Awards, a title it has proudly retained for two years in a row. The venue celebrates the experience of shared dining with an ‘Izakaya-style’ menu. Chase, who loves being creative and cooking with only the freshest produce, says the concept for Kiyomi was to have a restaurant locals and visitors would like to dine in, and come back to.

“Kiyomi centres around the delicious flavour ‘Umami’. We celebrate unique yet simple combinations which bring the natural flavours of the produce to life,” says Chase. “It needed to be cool and exciting, and have food to match the level of Sokyo at sister property The Star Sydney but with more of a relaxed feel.” The popular venue was joined shortly after by the property’s first indoor-outdoor dining venue, Cucina Vivo. Inspired by cliff-top restaurants along the Amalfi Coast, Cucina Vivo draws on traditional Italian food culture to celebrate good company, great food and beautiful surrounds. A stunning balcony overlooking the renovated pool creates a venue ideal for families and friends to enjoy the beautiful Gold Coast weather, while the centrepiece of the restaurant is a two-metre long wood-fired oven which complements the welcoming atmosphere. The vibrant menu features traditional favourites as well as inspired interpretations of the classics, proving a hit with Italian connoisseurs. Embracing the Gold Coast’s enviable climate and luxurious laidback lifestyle, Garden Kitchen & Bar followed in Cucina Vivo’s footsteps, opening

in early 2016 to reveal a quintessentially Queensland design that takes full advantage of the City’s enviable climate. Its striking design and stylish palette saw Garden Kitchen & Bar secure a place as one of seven Australian restaurants, and one of only two restaurants from Queensland, to be shortlisted for the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards’ Best Australian & Pacific Restaurant. The impressive modern fit-out features a generous dining space and lavish bar area bathed in natural light, an open kitchen equipped with Chef’s Rotisserie, a semi-private dining room for more intimate celebrations, and a sundrenched deck complete with its own outdoor bar that overlooks the property’s lush tropical gardens. The indoor-outdoor dining venue was also celebrated as Best Restaurant – Accommodation Hotels at the 2016 Queensland Hotels Association Awards for Excellence, having cemented its place as one of the Gold Coast’s most popular destinations. A mouth-watering array of seasonal dishes are expertly crafted by Garden Kitchen & Bar’s team of talented Chefs, utilising only the freshest produce and a selection of garnishes and herbs hand-picked from an onsite herb garden. >>

The opening of an additional two outlets, Mei Wei Dumplings and M&G Café and Bar, in December 2016, further strengthened the property’s gastronomic diversity through the offering of more relaxed dining alternatives. With a name that translates to ‘delicious’, Mei Wei Dumplings saw chefs introduce 120 new ingredients to the property, with a menu featuring more than 50 unique options. Next door, M&G Café and Bar features a classic café-style menu offering a range of light and more substantial options for an easy breakfast, lunch or dinner – perfect for a quick bite to eat, or a no fuss meal before a show. The newly unveiled venues were key to the property’s extensive atrium area upgrade, which also included a new-look Atrium Bar ahead of its transition to The Star Gold Coast in early 2017. Those planning to dine may want to consider an extended stay, with the refurbishment of the property’s almost 600 existing rooms delivering modern, contemporary accommodation which offer an unprecedented level of personalisation. From lavish suites boasting spacious outdoor terraces to the cool tones of the Superior Deluxe Rooms, each room exudes warmth and elegance from the moment you step in the door. Locally commissioned artwork provides a unique point of difference, while no expense was spared on electronics, affording guests the opportunity to customise lighting, drapery, temperature and service preferences through the use of fully integrated technology. Guests are also treated to a specially designed pillow menu, ‘The Cloud’ mattress topper – produced by the best specialist mills from around the world and exclusive to The Star properties – and an array of exclusive amenities by leading international brand L’OCCITANE.

“We have a proud history on the Gold Coast and wanted to create experiences that were reflective of our City’s personality,” Geoff says. “Through our redevelopment we have embraced our coastal lifestyle, opened up the existing property to celebrate our fantastic climate and created a breadth of experiences that cater to our guests’ needs. “Ongoing investment on the Gold Coast is an absolute necessity and we will continue to transform and evolve ahead of the opening of our luxury new six-star tower for the 2018 Commonwealth Games,” he continues. It is an approach that has laid the foundations for a bright future. At the front of the property, the Gold Coast’s first six-star hotel in more than a decade is also taking shape, and will form the centrepiece of the landmark transformation. Comprised of spacious suites and rooms while also showcasing signature bars and restaurants, private gaming rooms and butler service, the luxury development will focus on the creation of spaces that cater to the specific needs of individual travellers. It stands to change the face of tourism on the Gold Coast, and assist in driving broader domestic and international appeal ahead of its completion prior to the Games. Adding to the excitement of the current development is the announcement of an additional new 200-metre hotel and apartment tower on Broadbeach Island. The 4.5 star tower is the first of up to five within a future master plan for the property as part of a joint venture with Queen’s Wharf Brisbane partners Chow Tai Fook and Far East Consortium and takes the property’s total transformation to a combined investment worth up to $850 million.

Subject to successful apartment pre-sales, the new 700-key complex is expected to break ground over the coming 12 months and will include an exciting new restaurant and bar concept, and a luxurious day spa. An eighth floor recreation deck with ocean views will include a resort pool for hotel guests and quality residential facilities, while a range of flexible open spaces surrounded by tropical gardens will leverage the enviable Gold Coast climate and lifestyle. When complete, the new additions will increase the property’s overall accommodation to almost 1400 rooms, ensuring a range of price points for guests. The existing refurbished five-star facility will be joined by the six-star luxury hotel tower before the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and the additional 4.5 star hotel and apartment tower in 2020. The long term master plan concept for the property provides future development options potentially worth multiple billions of dollars featuring up to five new hotel and/or apartment towers, a world- class recreational deck, and new entertainment facilities.

AS THE INTENSE heat of summer fades to glowing ombre tones, new season coastal fashion has shifted towards an inspired look of effortless glamour, with soft, flowing layers and exquisite detail. Complemented by a pair of soft sunglasses and a clutch, flowing dresses are on-point for race day, the polo or a more formal function, while also being perfect for a luxe lunch out. Sheer layers and unexpected textures allow versatility to create a statement for special occasions, or dress down for breezy weekends. Shorts, particularly in white, remain a fresh anchor for a stylish ensemble this season.

Pair with a beautiful off-the-shoulder top for a striking look that suits all ages. Linen is another enduring classic for those seeking style with a unisex quality. For men, a hat and linen shirt combination is always elegant yet effortless. As always, thoughtful accessories bring an edge to any outfit. This season, classic silver drops or delicate pearl earrings enhance the femininity of soft fabrics and flowing layers. Clutches, in on-trend shades and interesting textures, lend a unique finish to each look. And while summer is behind us for another year, swimwear remains a focus for the residents

of the Gold Coast. Whether you are relaxing by the pool, strolling along the beach or heading out on a boat, the full piece can be the most flattering style of swimwear. Continuing your resort wardrobe, a statement kaftan is a glamorous, effortless look, as well as a sun smart option. Patterned kaftans are great paired with a nice sandal, creating an easy go-to option while enjoying a day on the water. Discover a fresh autumn look at The Marine Village Sanctuary Cove. Visit

Chef profile GRANT TURNER – EXECUTIVE PASTRY CHEF, WATERMARK HOTELS GRANT began as Executive Pastry Chef at Watermark Hotels in 2014, currently overseeing the pastry department of two hotels and four outlets. Classically trained, with a wide range of skills, his career has been heavily focused on hotels and restaurants, working within the Brisbane and Gold Coast area for many years. “I believe the most important part about being an Executive Chef is nurturing team members and developing skills in the kitchen,’’ he says. One of the highlights of his career was winning gold in the Dilmah High Tea Challenge in Sri Lanka, a competition spanning 710 contestants, 355 teams and 14 countries. While his creativity and flair allows him to produce desserts that excite his diners, Grant also loves cooking the classics. “You should never turn your back on a classic, however, there is always room to add a modern twist,’’ he insists. “External visual appeal is the first step in creating something exciting, but if you don’t follow that with quality and well thought out ingredients, you have lost the battle.’’ Grant believes that diners eat with their eyes then with their mouths, and that sustainability and local ingredients has a growing importance in dishes. His key tip for anyone pursuing a career in the kitchen, or even wanting to experiment at home: “you must love what you do – it translates into everything that you create.’’

Fresh from Hong Kong From street stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants, Hong Kong is a Mecca for food lovers. WORDS TONY HARPER

PARIS … TERRIFIC, NEW YORK, possibly more so. But Hong Kong, I reckon, leaves them both for dead, at least for food lovers. From Mong Kok stalls the size of a shoe-box grilling offal on skewers to three-star Michelin dining, it’s a city that exhales food with each breath and peddles it relentlessly from every nook and cranny. It’s a place of a thousand tall buildings, lights and sights: people massing like baitfish, the incessant roar of a thousand buses and 10,000 cars accompanied by buskers and hawkers, but more than anything it’s a place in which every block traversed rewards the walker with the scents of something cooking. You can eat happily for a couple of dollars or you can spend a small fortune, and part of me wonders where – beyond the fiscal – the distinction lies. Take this tussle for example – Cheung Hing Kee versus Ming Court. Cheung Hing Kee, in Lock Road Tsim Sha Tsui (the water end of Kowloon), grabs attention simply because of the lineup of people and general hubbub that surrounds it most mealtimes. It does very little – three sheng jiang bao (Shanghianese pan-fried dumplings like long-bao but fried and a little more sturdy) plus a couple of soups. I was simply wandering past wondering at the spill of people when my wife noticed the Michelin sign: two days later I’m back clutching a feeble amount of money and a cold beer.

62

The three dumplings on offer are their standard pork-mince, a version with shrimp (prawn) and another with truffle. These are the things that you need to approach with caution because they are filled with hot fatty soup. It’s one of those lose-lose situations: you know its going to burn but you just can’t wait long enough to take that first bite … it hurts like hell, and tastes like heaven. The truffle version is stunning … the best of the rather indulgent pack, but all are terrific and the key to their quality lies in two places: the soup and the pastry. My belief is that the soup is defined as much by the makeup of the pork filling as it is by the base of gelatinised liquid that catalyses the whole shebang. As the dumplings cook, the soup draws flavour from the meat, and these versions are rich, sweet and complex. Sheng jiang bao demand stiffer, thicker pastry than long-bao to survive the gentle frying process. But there’s something better about the balance – especially in exemplary versions like these – between the chewy and the runny; plus you get the slightly crunchy fried pastry where the buns have been folded then cooked upside down. Four buns (dumplings) will set you back HK$28 which is close to $5.50 Australian … not bad at all for Michelin food. To bring things back down to earth I had a crack at the vermicelli soup: disappointing. Ming Court exists at the other end of the restaurant spectrum – luxurious, pampering,

sporting two Michelin stars and way more expensive. It lives in the Cordis Hotel in Mong Kok, a district of markets with the five-star Cordis and the attached Langham Place a striking part of the urban renewal of the area. Dining there leaves no doubt as to its intent – service is polished and as sharp as a needle, the stemware is great, the crockery the sort that you hide from the kids and the surrounds rather special. Its menu is the polar opposite of Cheung Hing Kee’s sparseness – it is a tome with seven choices for bird’s nest, ten ‘Award Winners’, abalone, ox-tongue, foie-gras, wagyu and lotus root, a whole section of barbecued meats and pages of seafood. The stuff on the plate is sublime, from the dim-sum through to an immaculate suckling pig … tiny, perfectly crunchy skin (like porcine fairyfloss), laid on the platter like a portrait. Dining here is an experience that warrants the rating and the price. But when I think about the truffled buns from Cheung Hing Kee I can’t help thinking that they don’t surpass, but they equal in their own way, the dumplings here. And that’s the allure of Hong Kong. If taste alone floats your boat you can eat like an emperor for pittance or – if you want a serious dining experience – you can opt for the numerous special dining rooms; some that live at the top of the skyline with views that must be among the best on the planet; others closer to terra firma, but just as special.

Then there are places like 65 Peel Street, across the harbour on Hong Kong Island. It sits in SoHo, an enclave of contemporary, often quite westernised bars, restaurants and night clubs. Just around the corner from 65 Peel Street is the much talked about Ho Lee Fook, but as far as I am concerned there is no contest. Ho Lee Fook is a restaurant basking in its own importance; 65 Peel Street basks in food, beer and wine. It’s not a plush, lavish fitout: it began life in a rather rough-hewn concrete shell and instead of hiding the skeletal stuff – pipes, wiring etc – it has made them part of its industrial charm. Craft beer is a big chunk of its psyche, so is a concise repertoire of food that bridges its Hong Kong/Chinese roots and more international – occasionally hinting at American – stuff, all of which is fabulous. There are things like Chinese donuts (a soft bun) filled with lobster and mayo; Pork belly with an Asian twang; prawns and sambal. It’s beer friendly food done with imagination and skill. I haven’t even scratched the surface here, Hong Kong has so many styles of restaurants, so many street vendors and a mind-boggling array of foodstuffs. There are fish-ball specialists, noodlejoints, dessert-only restaurants, duck peddlers, goose peddlers, offal stalls and so much more. And they are everywhere.

WINE CELLAR

Pride & passion A ‘vine-change’ saw Ruth and George Mihaley establish Paradigm Hill winery in the heart of the Mornington Peninsula. WORDS TONY HARPER

66

WITH A WINE ESTATE like Paradigm Hill it’s hard

to plant a vineyard, the Yarra Valley being the

Still the Paradigm Hill version is a marvel – taut,

to know where to start, but easy to know where to finish, and that’s with its pinots. It produces two – L’ami sage and Les cinq, both brilliant, ethereal wines with firm backbones and gentle complexity. They stand very easily among the best Australia produces. It’s a description that permeates all of the Paradigm Hill wines regardless of variety, but it’s the pinots that whisper the message most clearly. Paradigm Hill lies on the Mornington Peninsula – a sort of well-bent Winklepicker-shaped tract of land south of Melbourne and creating the eastern boundaries of Port Phillip Bay. It’s a very short walk from Paradigm Hill to the town of Merricks and an easy jog to the ocean. On the bent up shoe it lives a little above the heel facing south-east across to Phillip Island. Ruth and George Mihaley are the folk behind the Paradigm Hill brand. They followed distinctly different career paths – Ruth a chef, George a researcher in the field of developing new human medicines and biotechnology. I’d describe George as old school: erudite, mannered, generous and passionate about his vineyard and wines. They sought what George describes as a ‘vine-change’. “The dream to have our own vineyard had been ‘fermenting’ for several decades and the love of wine and in particular Pinot Noir, was the main trigger,” he explains. “Our decision to abandon the relative ‘security’ of a stable, comfortable city lifestyle (in Melbourne) was at a time when our children had completed schooling and at a time when we decided to take stock of what we wanted to do for the rest of our lives.” From Melbourne there are numerous options for folk like Ruth and George who are thinking

most obvious choice – well established, a great haven for Pinot Noir, and within an easy drive from Melbourne. But the move south to the Mornington Peninsula in retrospect, seems kind of pre-ordained … “We spent many years searching for what was ‘just right’. Other regions were evaluated (eg Yarra, Macedon) but the Mornington Peninsula had everything we were seeking. “On top of this, starting in the mid 1980's we were helping our very dear friends Nat and Rosalie White from Main Ridge Estate each vintage time. Theirs was the first commercial winery on the Mornington Peninsula and, eventually, Nat agreed to take on the role of mentor. “After many years of searching, we found the perfect site – a 50 acre property that had only been used for grazing. It had the ideal sloping northerly aspect, perfect soil composition and abundant water supply, nestled in a quiet valley. “We started the vineyard from scratch, planting 10.4 acres of vines – half of which are Pinot Noir and the rest Pinot Gris, Riesling and Shiraz – all suited to the cooler maritime influenced environment of the Mornington Peninsula.” If Ruth and George ever had any doubts about their choice of site they will have been put to rest years ago. The wines are sought-after and sublime. Riesling is a rare grape on the peninsula, but tasting the Paradigm Hill – year after year – it makes me wonder why there isn’t more. Perhaps most vineyard sites in the area (and the Mornington Peninsula is as varied in topography and soil as any wine region on earth) don’t quite suit the variety. More likely, most growers choose to dedicate their land to the more glamour grapes of pinot noir and chardonnay.

steely and long, like a fencing foil, but bright with lime and jasmine notes. The Pinot Gris is expensive in Australian terms (somewhere around $55) but it’s also a textural, exuberant, giving wine surrounded by myriad pale, innocuous kin that sell for less but also give very little. There’s a dry savoury rosé made from shiraz, as well as Col’s Block – a brilliant shiraz-based dry red. Shiraz (syrah) is no stranger to the Mornginton Peninsula, but it makes a very different wine to the robust versions of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, or even the more gently, savoury wines from places like the Grampians, the Hunter Valley and the Strathbogie Ranges. The spice seems to be more pronounced, and it leans more toward the exotic than simply pepper, and while there is still a core of dark fruits and earth it’s the savoury notes that hold the tune. Col’s Block (and I’m stealing a phrase here from Steve Flamsteed of Giant Steps) is shiraz made by a pinot producer: it shows. In the end, however, it is the two pinot noirs that head the Paradigm Hill pack. Les cinq is the rare wine, sourced from a small block that produces its own unique character. Most vintages it is a quieter, more reticent wine than L’ami sage (bigger production, less expensive) – occasionally that relationship gets turned on its head. But both wines have the familial traits of delicacy, beautiful bones, longevity and restraint. They are – with the exception of Noddy 2, one of the first ‘bug eye’ Austin Healy Sprite cars to have arrived in Australia in 1958 – the pride of Paradigm Hill.

Kimberley Coast Winter 2018 is the ideal time to experience the Kimberley Coast with Silversea Expeditions.

A KIMBERLEY EXPEDITION with Silversea is unlike any other form of travel – thrilling, aweinspiring and humbling all at the same time. Feel the magnetism of this remote region as you explore Aboriginal rock art, deserted beaches and a plethora of wildlife on Australia’s final frontier or experience the splendour of watching the sun rise over the Kimberley coast and the Bungle Bungle mountain range. Silversea’s sleek, 120-guest Silver Discoverer cruise ship is the perfect platform for viewing these untamed landscapes, with all ocean-view suites and plenty of deck space so that a breaching whale or a pod of dolphins is always within sight. Her shallow draft allows Silver Discoverer to navigate closer to shore, and with a fleet of 12 Zodiacs, guests can land on isolated shores and explore wetlands and submerged ecosystems, up-close and in-depth.

68

A complimentary programme of unique, smallgroup shore experiences, led by a team of expert guides and lecturers, allows you to fully experience the lands you’ll visit. Commencing in 2018, Silversea Expeditions' Kimberley season will start in July and run through to early August. This is the most popular time of year to travel to the Kimberley, with the ‘dry season’ weather characterised by clear blue skies and balmy days, which makes for a welcome escape from the southern states’ winter chill. Depending on the amount of rain during the wet season, there might be some water still flowing over the big falls as late as August. Take an aerial tour of the panoramic Bungle Bungle Range. View ancient Aboriginal images at Raft Point while listening to Dreamtime stories associated with the Wandjina spirit.

Your cruise fare includes: • Highly qualified expedition team with experts in their field (marine biologists, ornithologists, historians and more). • E xcursions and activities, including explorations by Zodiac®. • Complimentary expedition gear: backpack and water bottle on every voyage. • Personalised service with a butler for all suites and the highest crew to guest ratio in the industry. • Fine dining even in the most remote places of the planet . • Comfortable amenities with the largest expedition suites at sea. WELL TRAVELLED

Canberra calling It’s not just politics in the Nation’s capital, as Madison Hebbard discovered.

MARBLE SCULPTURES, golden statues, magnificent paintings, hand made tapestries. Welcome to Canberra. We are at the National Gallery of Australia, affectionately known as the NGA, and we are about to be seduced into a world of power, passion and luxury in the great golden Palace of Versailles. The last time I was in Canberra. I was a teenager in high school travelling to our National Capital to experience Politics 101. That was illuminating, not. Now nudging towards 400,000 people, Canberra celebrated 100 years as the Nation’s capital in 2013, and is Australia’s largest inland city known for being one of the cleanest, most secure, and hospitable capital cities of the world. It has become a major tourist destination, boasting record international visitor figures, which exceeded 200,000 for the first time in the year to June 2016.

70

The city is designed around Lake Burley Griffin which holds its own magnetism, serenely quiet with kilometres of parkland, groves of trees and bushes and paths surrounding its edges. When the Australian Government held an international competition to design Canberra in 1911, Walter Burley Griffin’s design was so futuristic that in 2018 Canberra will have its own tram network built with little if no land resumption or disruption to the roads compared to other cities in Australia. Canberra is so much more than a clean well-designed city loaded with politicians, it is filled with world class cultural precincts, museums, galleries, libraries, outstanding landscaping, gourmet restaurants and cafés and vast bushlands, which have earned it the ‘Bush Capital’ label, delivering an enviable tourism experience. This is also a city that provides the full kaleidoscope of all four seasons, each delivering its own distinctive beauty.

We are in Canberra at the request of my mum, who wanted to see the Versailles: Treasures from the Palace exhibition at the NGA. Celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary in late March, my parents thought it would be a great idea to be whisked away to the France of the 1700’s, especially as it was just an hour and half flight from the Gold Coast. In 1667, the 28-year-old King of France, Louis XIV, built the greatest palace in the world. Now, for the first time ever, over 130 treasures from the Palace of Versailles, including royal paintings and luxurious gilded furniture pieces, have travelled to Australia from France for an exhibit which closes on 17 April 2017. At the entry of Versailles: Treasures from the Palace your breath is taken away by the sheer enormity of a floor to ceiling print of The Hall of Mirrors. This is most famous room in the Palace, constructed in 1684 and adorned with dozens of shining golden chandeliers and 357 mirrors.

Many of the attributes of the Hall were melted down at the order of Louis XIV in 1689 to finance the war. Today, following a $16 million makeover in 2007, all the statues in the Hall of Mirrors are replicas as the original ones were stolen or melted before and during the French revolution. You can only imagine the immense cascading dresses with dozens and dozens of metres of the highest quality laces and silks swirling around the dance floor in the arms of the French and European aristocracy. As you float across the floor in this exhibit you are transported to the gardens – the manicured grass, the hundreds of intricate and carefully sculpted statues, the structured hedges and the mass planting of trees on acres and acres of land in a mesmerising pattern in perfect symmetry. You can enjoy the Jardin du chateau de Versailles cleverly recreated with video screen walls and the centre piece of the original fountain of Latona and her children. With more than 150 bronze, marble and lead works of art in the gardens and 55 fountains one asks the question, what powered the fountains before electricity? This exhibition gives insight into the engineering brilliance that was way before its time. >>

Even when the Versailles treasures are gone, you can spend hours at the NGA as the exhibits are some of the best in Australia including an international art gallery boasting pieces by Monet and Matisse. Another feature of Canberra my mum and dad were keen to see was the National Zoo and Aquarium which is a part of the highly acclaimed Jamala Wildlife Lodge. So France and Africa in one trip. When you’re not a keen air traveller this short trip to Canberra is the answer. If you have ever wanted to go to Africa but just didn’t get there, this is as close to the real thing as you will find. With up close encounters with lions, rhinos and meerkats, all while staying in five-star African-styled accommodation with delicious food and wine on offer, this is an absolute must to be added to your Canberra itinerary.

72

On our way to the Zoo we were fortunate to be able to see the Arboretum. A living collection of rare and threatened species of forests from around the world on 250 hectares of land only six kilometres from the city. This concept was born from the devastating fires that swept through Canberra in 2003. The main building alone is a piece of architectural excellence with raw timber girders across the ceiling giving it a cathedral like appearance. The national Bonsai and Penjing (miniature landscape) Collection is also housed here. Between the National Museum, the National Archives, The Royal Australian mint, the Telstra Tower, and Mount Ainslie Lookout, Canberra has so much more to offer than just politics. A visit would not be complete without seeing the Australian War Memorial, the place that commemorates the sacrifice our men, women and animals made at war. Don’t miss the last post ceremony held at 4.40pm every day.

For those of you who enjoy a good market make your way to the Old Bus Depot Markets where you will find a large collection of antiques at incredibly affordable prices, fresh fruit, flowers, entertainment and gourmet treats all under the cover of the old sheds. I think the best thing about Canberra is everything is so close by, you don’t really need to plan much other than accommodation which books out quite often because of the regular cultural events held there … and because the place is full of visiting politicians. I am looking forward to returning to our Nation’s Capital again, in all seasons, Spring for Floriade, Summer for Lake Burley Griffin, Autumn for the colour change of the gardens and parks and Winter for the fireplaces and 30 plus wineries a short drive from the city, and, of course, those shimmering poplar trees that shake in the breeze, waving farewell from Canberra.

Unmistakably Maserati Maserati Levante: the SUV for wealthy adventurers. WORDS CHRIS NIXON

EVERYBODY wants a Sports Utility Vehicle these days. In February, for the first time in Australia, SUVs collectively out-sold traditional sedans, hatchbacks, wagons and coupes. There’s little point in denying an inevitable trend and of course car makers are forced to agree. Why else would some of the world’s most famous makes compromise their priceless identities? We never imagined Porsche, Jaguar, Maserati and Bentley would build off-road wagons, but now they’re here and selling well. Stand by for Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini over the next couple of years. The Maserati Levante is the latest SUV and it’s set to lead increased visibility here for the historic Italian sports car make. The company has initially ordered 500 Levantes and is targeting 1,000 sales of all Maseratis over the coming year. It’s part of the phenomenon of an extraordinary increase in sales of high-end models in the past decade. Before then, a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls-Royce or Lotus on our roads was a rare and exciting sight. Now all are ready to buy in a showroom near you. I’ve just had a preview drive of the Levante and will report on a full road test in a future issue. Three models are available initially. All are powered by a V6 turbo-diesel engine producing 202 kiloWatts and linked to eight-speed transmission with ‘intelligent’ all-wheel drive (meaning power distribution is rear-biased but directed as needed to each of the wheels). Other engine choices are expected to follow in the coming year. The range starts at $139,990 plus on-road costs. Call it an expensive SUV or an inexpensive Maserati. Only the $138,990 Ghibli sedan – with the same engine – is cheaper in the Maserati Australia catalogue. Two better-equipped and individually-focused variants called Sport and Luxury, are each priced at $159,990. Think that’s it? Read the options list with your wallet tightly-guarded. Depending on the model selected, option prices are substantial.

76

On the base variant, a Sports Pack costs $20,000 and a Driver Assist package $7,900. On its own, ‘full natural leather’ costs $9,085, by which time a buyer will be asking exactly what comes standard in a Maserati. And then there are the customising options for which Maserati is renowned. I’d start with the unique silk upholstery by fashion brand Ermenegildo Zegna. Needless to say, the Levante does have plenty. Such as a sumptuous leather interior, 12-way adjustable driver’s seat, eight-speaker audio, dual-zone air-con and powered tailgate. The tech inventory includes Maserati’s ‘Skyhook’ continuously-adjustable shock absorbers, bi-xenon headlights, five selectable suspension heights from off-road to sports and parking and four selectable drive modes, each invoking specific settings for the throttle, gearbox, 4WD engagement and stability/traction system. On a drive from Sydney to the Central Coast and a few laps of a private track, the Levante showed its sporting heritage, plus some off-road ability. It steers, corners and stops beautifully. Weight distribution is a perfect 50:50 for ideal cornering balance and in the highway modes, the centre of gravity is low. Ignore the anomaly of a diesel-engined Maserati and you’ll find the performance satisfactory – 0-100 kmh in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 230 kmh, the second figure in big part thanks to bodywork that is the most streamlined in the SUV world despite its bulk. The Levante was tested on a short, extremely steep gravel descent and handled it easily with all the assist electronics engaged. With 600 Newtonmetres of engine torque, off-road drive mode and the high suspension setting, there’s no doubt this Maserati would be as capable as most SUVs in many situations. And finally, looks should be the clincher for many potential buyers. Stylists have done a great job to make the Levante look elegant, distinctive and fast. If you want imposing, buy a Bentley Bentayga; if you want sexy, buy three Levantes. The Maserati is unmistakable. You’ll know one when you see one.

Create Your Vision Horizon’s New E75 Custom Design Options. BOATING ENTHUSIASTS will tell you they love a boat show for the energy and inspiration that comes with seeing the industry’s latest trends, new technologies and creative designs firsthand. Channeling the ideas and inspiration gathered at a show into a stylish and well-planned build, however, can be daunting. So, when the Horizon E75 made her debut on the 2016 boat show circuit from Australia to the U.S., attendees took notice. What was the buzz about? Designed in collaboration with detailed feedback from experienced Horizon yacht owners, the E75 offers the option of multiple layout configurations and numerous innovative amenities. With the E75, owners can channel their inspiration and creativity into a well-planned layout, which makes this stylish, efficient and flexible yacht a thrilling option for both experienced owners and novice yachtsmen. Offered in either a skylounge or open bridge configuration, the E75 is designed with various cruising lifestyles in mind and expansive exterior areas are maximised for entertainment. The boat deck features a bar with refrigerator and barbecue grill as well as the option of a

84

Jacuzzi. The forward deck is fitted with sunpads and a dinette for eight guests while the main deck aft features a dinette and a large teak table for eight. A hydraulic hi-lo swim platform with dive gear stowage to either side of the transom door allows for swimming, fishing and diving with ease. Debuting at the Sydney International Boat Show, the E75 model showcases the various degrees of customisation available to Horizon owners. Hull One, a skylounge version, incorporates a three-stateroom layout and is designed with al fresco entertaining in mind. A Jacuzzi and bar on the boat deck invite lounging and conversation amid a panoramic view. One level below, the aft deck is fitted with a freezer for storing the day’s catch that can easily be prepared and cooked in the galley, which in this configuration is located in the main salon aft. Equipped with ABT bow and stern thrusters, zero-speed stabilisers, and standard twin Caterpillar C-18 engines of 1150hp each, this model will achieve a 22-knot top speed. Hull Two, designed with American style in mind, was built in an enclosed skylounge version and features a three en suite stateroom layout –

with a full-beam Master, forward VIP, and twin guest stateroom that can be converted to a double bed – with crew quarters aft of the engines. The main-deck configuration places the spacious salon aft, with an aft dayhead, and flows into the fully-equipped galley and country kitchen forward in a layout that accentuates the openness and depth of the space. Equipped with the upgraded C-32 engine package, ABT bow and stern thrusters, zerospeed stabilisers, and custom Garmin NAV, this version has a 6,800L fuel capacity and reaches a top speed of 27-knots. With the new E75, Horizon owners can select a custom layout based upon their cruising lifestyle. This flexibility, offered on a top proven hull design with state-of-the-art construction methods, makes Horizon’s new E75 a stylish yacht in which any boat enthusiast can channel his inspiration. Italian style and class Cranchi motor yachts offer unparalleled marine technology.

CRANCHI started building boats in 1870. Since cars had not been invented yet, you could say they were a little ahead of the game. Now they make yachts that are highly valued around the world, their name synonymous with advanced Italian boatbuilding and unparalleled marine technology. Everything they have achieved is thanks to the time they spend under the water – observing, analysing, testing – understanding how to make the most efficient, reliable, high-performance hulls that assure your safety. When you think about Italy, the first impression is design and quality, Cranchi represents this feeling when you board one of their yachts. The range starts from 24 ft and ends with the flagship yacht class 60 Fly. Cranchi’s 145 years of experience makes them the experts of motor yachts.

88

The state-of-the-art factory is located at the fabulous Lake Como in Piantedo and the test centre is in San Giorgio di Nogaro where you can go on a sea trial 365 days a year. During the 2017 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, Cranchi will introduce the stylish M44 HT, a very convenient sports cruiser for the family. The soft-top sunroof allows you to enjoy the breeze during cruising and to watch the sky full of stars at night when moored in a bay. Prepare your meal on the barbecue located on the deck while entertaining the guests al fresco after a great day out on the water. The hull – designed by Aldo Cranchi – is very stable and allows the boat to produce unbelievable performance. The Cranchi jumps to 30 knots within 20 seconds, which is quite amazing. Push the levers down and the 300+

horsepower twin Volvo Pentas come alive. The amount of power, and the sound cutting through the waves is quite impressive. Cruising speed around 22 knots will sail you with the comfort you need on a motor yacht. Vessels are available in any colour which gives a unique and outstanding presence to every yacht. Maritimo – Oceans Apart Introducing the ‘Beamy’ M59 cruising motor yacht.

LEADING AUSTRALIAN manufacturer, Maritimo, is set to release the M59 cruising motor yacht at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May. The new model had its world premier at the recent Miami International Boat Show. Maritimo International Sales and Marketing Manager, Greg Haines, who went to Miami for the show, said the AUD$2.15M, M59 is a three cabin, two bathroom vessel with a wide beam and large back opening lazerette similar to that on the company’s larger motor yacht the M64. “The back of the boat opens up to a large storage space which is perfect for a tender and all the water toys you could want,” he said. “The cockpit is accessed from both sides with openings to the hydraulic swim platform (optional) and because of the boat’s large beam the space is substantial. The 5.36 metre beam on the M59 is wider than the Maritimo M62.

90

“The M59 attracted a great deal of interest in Miami and we expect the same to occur at the Sanctuary Cove show.” Maritimo have been displaying its vessels at each Sanctuary Cove show since the company was founded and this year will have six vessels on display including the new S70 and M59 along with M64, M54, M51 and the X5. Greg said Maritimo was confident of a strong performance at Sanctuary Cove. “From all reports we are getting from show organisers there is a lot of interest from exhibitors and there’s a renewed level of confidence in the market overall,” he said. This year they will also have the recently opened Maritimo Sanctuary Cove headquarters overlooking the marina as an additional presence. “Our on water display will be extensive as usual, but the addition of the new marketing

headquarters at the entrance to the marina will give us an even bigger footprint.” Maritimo is Australia’s world-renowned builder of bespoke luxury motor yachts perfectly blending superior engineering and performance with luxurious finishes and smart interior design. Hand built by the finest craftsman they offer each owner timeless elegance and unparalleled abilities in the water.

Innovation guides Integrity New 490 Grand Sedan SINCE they were introduced to the Australian market eight years ago, Integrity Motor Yachts have offered clients the benefits of semi-custom layouts, strong build and the style and comfort to cruise Australia’s coastline and waterways with ease. The new 490 Grand Sedan is the pinnacle of the brand’s achievements as a cruiser that offers owners a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle complete with two large and welcoming bedrooms – staterooms in boating parlance – and two bathrooms. The latest 490 GS to arrive in Australia was delivered to her owners in Sanctuary Cove just before Christmas last year and she shines with special features and quality appointments. The wide, beautifully appointed aft cockpit includes a shining dining table with L-shape seating for four people. There’s also a small lounge to one side, perhaps for reading or sipping a cool drink and simply admiring the view. Moving from cockpit to saloon is seamless. Two large awning windows open up and clip to the headliner while a half-height sliding door does the rest to open the interior. The galley provides a servery to guests in the cockpit and the stone benchtop is incredibly long – enough for two to work efficiently side-by-side. All the equipment – twin stainless steel sinks, the two-burner cooktop, convection microwave oven and a space for garbage or storage – are hidden under the benchtop giving the area a clean clutter-free look.

92

The cabinetry timberwork is coated in an elegant semi-glass varnish and there is also plenty of storage throughout. The indoor dinette is a triangular dining table opposite the galley with L-shape leather seating. For entertainment, the Integrity 490 Grand Sedan is equipped with a pop-up 37-inch LCD TV on a swivel so that it can be viewed in the cockpit or the saloon. There is also a Fusion sound system for music aficionados. So much of the Integrity 490 Grand Sedan is designed for outdoor living. And it also provides luxury for times when the family stays on board. Four steps down from the saloon, Integrity designers have employed their greatest inspiration for change in the accommodation suite. As semi-custom builders, Integrity Managing Director Brett Flanagan and his team not only listen closely to their owners and take in ideas, they also innovate with every model and every new boat. In the latest 490 GS, the innovation has been extraordinarily successful. “Since we built the first 490 GS, we have moved the engine-room bulkhead aft and taken a little space out of the guest stateroom forward to create a more spacious, airy master amidships with its own en-suite bathroom. Previous boats included a single bathroom on the port side, opposite the master stateroom.” The two bathrooms share the pleasure of separate shower stalls, stone benchtops and plenty of light.

For all that a few centimetres have been taken from the guest stateroom forward, it remains a comfortable, spacious cabin with a double bed. Brett says Integrity also provides an option for two wide bunk beds. To drive this beauty, the helm station is designed for comfort, utility and to provide all the technical information a skipper requires. Twin Garmin screens provide electronic charts, water depth detail, while a pair of luxurious leather helm seats provide relaxing comfort. The Integrity 490 GS is designed as much for long-distance cruising as for weekends around local waterways. To help you get there, the boat is powered by a John Deere 480-horsepower turbo-diesel engine. A Cummins version is also available. A bow thruster is standard to assist with close manoeuvring in a marina,. The boat carries up to 2,000 litres of diesel fuel and 700 litres of water. Brett says this boat will reach a top speed of 15 knots and can cruise comfortably all day at 10 knots. For those planning a cruise to distant harbours and islands, a tank of fuel will take you 600 nautical miles at a very comfortable eight or nine knots. Bon voyage.

With an abundance of standard features and options available the 288 Commander is a boat of two different halves. Building & construction industry optimistic BUSINESS CONFIDENCE in the Queensland economy and building industry strengthened during the December 2016 quarter, continuing to rise into positive territory. The latest Master Builders Survey of Industry Conditions shows 45 per cent of respondents now regard the outlook as stronger, despite 90 per cent of all home construction being in the southeast corner. Master Builders deputy CEO Paul Bidwell said the shift in mood was coming from both the residential and commercial sectors, and was obvious in the resource regions of central Queensland, Mackay & Whitsunday and north Queensland. “This is despite the recent concentration of work in Brisbane and surrounding coastal cities,” he said. The report also found: Business activity increased, with respondents reporting stronger levels of work in progress.

Businesses are also confident in the future, with 89 per cent expecting the situation to improve or at least stabilise in the coming three months. Correspondingly, average contract prices also strengthened, with 25 per cent reporting stronger prices, and 61 per cent saying prices held steady. Employment levels also strengthened, returning to positive territory. This is expected to continue into the coming quarter. Low levels of demand continued as the most significant constraint on business growth. This is in line with the concentrated nature of demand that has failed to reach many regions and sectors of the industry. Regional summary: While confidence improved across all regions, the Gold Coast remains the stand out performer. The Darling Downs and South West Queensland also had a strong quarter off the back of strong demand for non-residential construction.

For Greater Brisbane, as the demand for new inner-city units cools, it is shifting in favour of smaller unit projects, townhouses and detached houses in the suburbs. The resource regions of Central Queensland, Mackay & Whitsunday and North Queensland have finally enjoyed large improvements during the December quarter, despite starting at a low base. While some moderation is expected, it is clear the worst is now behind them. The Sunshine Coast and Far North Queensland also recorded improvements, although these were more modest than their neighbours. Wide Bay Burnett continues to quietly tick along, mostly avoiding the swings experienced in other regions. For more information go to

Levels of luxury Exclusive Rivage Royale penthouse for sale.

RIVAGE ROYALE is considered one of the Gold Coast property market’s most prominent and prestigious landmarks. This all-residential building encapsulates the best of the region with its incomparable views and luxurious appointments, finishes and amenities. Unsurprisingly, apartments at this exclusive address are highly sought-after and infrequently come to market, while penthouses are rarely, if ever, available. Until now, the last time a Rivage Royale penthouse became available was more than a decade ago. This iconic penthouse is set over three luxurious levels, the 27th, 28th & 29th floors of Rivage Royale. Occupying 825m2, the four-bedroom property is extraordinarily well-appointed and boasts expansive vistas that span from Marina Mirage to the hinterland, taking in the sparkling sundrenched beaches and the Gold Coast’s famous cityscape. With arguably the Gold Coast’s most dramatic views, this stunning penthouse is owned by brother and sister, Peter Kyriakou and Athena Jordan, and has been in the family for 16 years. “After years of holidaying on the Gold Coast, my father purchased this penthouse in 2001,” explains co-owner, Peter Kyriakou. “A deciding factor was the penthouse’s exclusive rooftop area for entertaining family and friends – it was, and

100

remains, the most impressive on the Gold Coast. “Rivage Royale also has the most fantastic amenities,” adds Peter. “Set in beautiful gardens, there’s a huge outdoor pool, an indoor pool, a putting green, two tennis courts, a billiard area and the gym is fitted out with the latest equipment. Every aspect of luxurious living is catered for at Rivage Royale. “The penthouse also has an exclusive-use 27m marina berth, and the 24-hour security and maintenance is first rate, everything you could possibly wish for is here.” Location is also a selling point says Athena. “Everything is at your doorstep. Rivage Royale is a few minutes walk from the beach, plus there are great shops very close by, including the high-end Marina Mirage shopping precinct, the new Woolworths at Sundale and essential amenities such as pharmacies,” she says. “As well, there are some great cafés and fabulous new restaurants in the immediate area and the exclusive TSS and St Hilda’s schools are both very close to Rivage Royale.” With grand proportions, a graciously ascending staircase and classical architectural details, the penthouse has been meticulously upgraded in the understated elegant Hamptons and Ralph Lauren style of interiors.

“The penthouse’s impressive rooftop area, complete with its own private pool and sauna, makes for glorious entertaining,” says Athena. “The views are considered the best on the Gold Coast and guests are always amazed when they see the region from up here.” According to Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty’s Jarrad Ireland, Rivage Royale is without doubt one of the Gold Coast’s most coveted and prestigious residential landmarks. “This penthouse residence is designed for a lifestyle that is rich in scale, privacy and luxury,” Jarrad says. “It is a rare marriage of the ultimate in elegance and modern sophistication, plus it has the most spectacular views on the Gold Coast. “To list the penthouse is very exciting. Rivage Royale apartments are highly sought-after and the penthouse is a such rare offering, so naturally it is going to attract the interest of discerning buyers both here and abroad looking to acquire the ultimate Gold Coast trophy property.”

Hamptons-style home Australia’s ultimate beach house featuring original Sydney Harbour Bridge lighting.

BEWITCHED BY ITS VAST and expansive ocean views and its immediate location to the white sands of Kingscliff Beach, the current owners purchased this prized waterfront site at Salt Village six years ago. With a vision to build the ultimate Hamptons-style beach house, the owners commissioned famed architect, Paul Uhlmann, to design this stunning, four-bedroom beachfront house. Now a bonafide international style of architecture, Hamptons-style homes are ideal for our coastal living, with this recently built home regarded as one of the best examples in Australia. As with traditionally designed Hamptons beachside residences, this home features an elegant, contemporary, open-plan design and an abundance of natural light. Tailored to celebrate its stunning waterfront location, the design features of the four-bedroom family home include plenty of louvre windows for capturing fresh sea breezes and almost every room is blessed with breathtaking ocean views. A mere 40 steps to the white sands of Kingscliff beach, the highest quality finishes are evident

at every turn. The owners employed some of the best tradesmen in Australia to create the beautiful bespoke woodwork throughout, with these hand-finished details enriching the warm and welcoming ambiance of the home. A design standout is the master bedroom’s huge ensuite. Tiled in marble and featuring a large marble bath and built-in LCD television, this is the ultimate luxurious bathroom. Complementing the waterfront position, the white-washed rustic timber finishes, typical of Hamptons-style homes, add to the feel of stylish, beachside living. Another bespoke feature is the stunning light that hangs over the dining room. This architecturally important piece of history is one of the few remaining original lights from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and adds to the nautical design style. The home is centred around a sparkling pool which has a stylish, tropical-style Cabana. This creates ambient alfresco living areas that are perfect for relaxing or entertaining.

Built over two levels, the upper level has three large bedrooms each with stunning ocean views. Also located on the upper level is an idyllically positioned living room that overlooks the beach and also has unobstructed water views, perfect for relaxing while enjoying the fresh sea breezes in the summer months or whale watching in winter. “The owners were inspired to create a home that allowed you to feel relaxed as soon as you entered it,” says Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty agent, Geraldine Keogh. “Paul Uhlmann’s design has achieved this by creating an ambience of a never-ending beachside holiday.” This ultimate Hamptons-style beach house is located between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay on the prestigious and sought after North Point Avenue in Salt Village, Kingscliff, and is only 15 minutes from Coolangatta Airport. TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

The full moon on April 11th will be particularly enlightening, as you'll gain a deeper understanding of someone at home, in your environment or family. You may go over old ground in the last two weeks of April and a surprise will help you to see someone in a new light. Work on building stability in relationships and you'll enjoy a breath of fresh air in May.

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

With your sign's ruler, Mercury, retrograde for much of April, this will represent your chance to 'catch up' with yourself, after a busy start to the year. But it won't be a slow two months: Mars will prove motivational, keeping your projects on track. And the new moon on May 26th will kickstart a refreshing phase in your personal life, so get set for change!

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

The Sun will enter Taurus on April 20th, so prepare to shine! However, a background theme (that will last at least until mid-May), will revolve around reviewing your past, returning to an old haunt or re-considering past decisions. This aside, this could be a breakthrough two months for you. Avoid impulsiveness early in May, but get set to turn a major corner mid-May.

A lovely set of circumstances is beginning to form and you'll get a better idea towards mid-May how these will affect you. For some, developments will be to do with work; for others, your broader interests and finances. It's a good time to consider how to devote more of your energy to pursuits you enjoy, and to relish the sense of accomplishment in achieving a cherished goal.

The attention you focus on shared commitments in coming months will include considering your relationships and finances in a new light. Current circumstances suggest you wish to break free of restrictions and will enjoy trying something new. Avoid impulsiveness and consider circumstances that seem limiting as testing grounds for your patience and learning ability.

Get ready to act on plans you've laid in the past. And, if you're a rare Virgo that hasn't already laid meticulous plans, the following two months will be ideal for moving forward with inspired ideas that can provide your home life, family or work with more stability, especially if you work from home or with property. A difficult relationship will show potential for improvement.

A fresh approach to a partner, business or personal, will encourage you to see them from a fresh perspective. You may begin to see your relationship as more stable but may sense that stubbornness – either yours or theirs – can be an issue. Luckily, the full moon on April 11th should bring balance back into the equation, and a financial or work boost in May will be welcome.

The next two months will be ideal for building stability and the kind of life you truly want. When you work on reviewing past ideas, you'll come up with a great strategy or solution to issues where this is needed the most. The alignment of Saturn and Uranus on May 19th will provide insight into what must be done as a course-correction or to initiate a progressive plan.

With Saturn your ruler retrograde until August, it's vital you take things step by step in coming months to avoid repeating past mistakes and mix-ups. However, this phase will also be ideal for setting up fresh approaches especially to family, your home life, work, groups and people you like to socialise with, as you'll get the chance to improve dynamics in these areas.

A refreshing but also settling phase will begin to infuse your home life, property or family. If unsettled events or a surprise occurs earlier in April though, rest assured that sanity and stability will resume. And where negotiations or financial matters require tact, you'll find that your innovative ideas combined with your understanding of practicalities, will ensure sense prevails.

A proactive approach to attaining your goals and experiencing a sense of achievement will be rewarding. You'll enjoy the sense that you can steam ahead with projects that seemed unlikely or impractical earlier in the year, especially during the last two weeks in May. Beforehand, enjoy the opportunity to create more stability in your networks, both at home and at work.

The next two months were made for you! It's an excellent time to consolidate and review developments that have already occurred this year, allowing for opportunities that open up early in April to point the way forward. The full moon on April 11th suggests a new chapter in a partnership or an agreement will begin, clearing the way for exciting plans to go full-steam ahead.

COVER STORY

Cloud cover Cloudland Bar and Restaurant provides the backdrop for the cover of this special 60th edition of the magazine.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM

CAPTURING THE ELEGANCE, luxury and style synonymous with Cove magazine, the cover of this issue was taken at Brisbane’s iconic Cloudland by Gold Coast photographer, Jashan Prasad. "Having shot a number of weddings at Cloudland, it was obvious that a couple of hours was not enough time to really make use of the amazing opportunities there,” Jashan explains. “I decided to organise a styled shoot at the venue alongside some other amazing vendors. With our first model groom pulling out two days before the shoot, I called in my younger brother, Shammi, who took on the role alongside the beautiful Natalie Ryan who modelled as our bride. “Both were fantastic to work with and I couldn't be happier with how the photos turned out.”

The series of images captures the essence of the unique Fortitude Valley property which boasts a restaurant, two bars and a number of boutique booths as well as function and event spaces. “Those who have been to Cloudland would know the effort that has gone into setting up the place, and even though we spent a full day shooting around the different areas/rooms of the venue, we could have kept going for many more hours," Jashan says.
